Notes: Abstract 2,4-Dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA), a hydroxamic acid (Hx) occurring in wheat, was shown to deter feeding by the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), and to reduce BYDV transmission to the plant. Dual choice tests with wheat leaves showed the preferential settlement of aphids on leaves with lower levels of DIMBOA. Electric monitoring of aphid feeding behaviour showed that in seedlings with higher DIMBOA levels fewer aphids reached the phloem and they needed longer times to contact a phloem vessel than in those with lower levels. When aphids carrying BYDV were allowed to feed on wheat cultivars with different DIMBOA levels, fewer plants were infected with BYDV in the higher DIMBOA cultivars than in the lower ones. Preliminary field experiments showed a tendency for wheat cultivars with higher Hx levels to be more tolerant to infection by BYDV than lower Hx level ones.

Notes: Abstract The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) is an important animal model of human essential hypertension. During the first month of life, increased retention of sodium is present in the SHR which appears to be mediated by the renin-angiotensin system. The present review will discuss the role that increased activity of the renin-angiotensin system plays in sodium/body fluid regulation during early development. It is hypothesized that disordered regulation of sodium/body fluid homeostasis during this stage leads to pathological cardiovascular regulation in adulthood. Through an understanding of the relationship between sodium/body fluid balance in the young and cardiovascular function in the adult insights may be gained into both the pathological state of hypertension and the critical role played by early development in shaping homeostatic mechanisms in adulthood.

Notes: Abstract The inorganic contents of bone, brain, erythrocyte, heart, kidney cortex, kidney medulla, liver, lung, muscle and plasma from spontaneously hypertensive rats were compared with those of the same tissues from healthy Sprague-Dawley rats. A general inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry method developed for multi-element determinations of most of the elements present in biological tissues was used. Variations were found not only for major elements, as expected, but also for many trace elements in several tissues.

Notes: Abstract The vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAMF) Glomus clarum (Nicol. and Schenck) isolate NT4, G. mosseae (Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe isolate NT6 and G. versiforme (Karst.) Berch isolate NT7 coexist in wheat field soils in Saskatchewan. This study assessed the response of lentil (Lens esculenta L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to monospecific and mixed cultures of these VAMF isolates. Seedlings were inoculated with 100 spores of a VAMF isolate, or an equal mixture of spores of two isolates, and grown in a sterile soil mix in a growth chamber. Both crops responded differently to these different VAMF isolates. In the case of lentil, G. clarum NT4 was more effective than G. mosseae NT6 and G. versiforme NT7, and significantly increased (P〈0.05) the shoot dry weight (43%) and grain yield (57%) compared with the uninoculated control. There was a significant positive correlation between the percentage of VAMF colonized roots and shoot dry weight (r=0.672***) and shoot phosphorus concentration (r=0.608***) of lentil. In the case of wheat, G. clarum NT4 had no effect on shoot dry weight, but produced significant (P〈0.08) increases in grain yield (12%) and the phosphorus concentration of the shoot and grain. Although G. clarum NT4 and G. mosseae NT6 both produced similar levels of VAM colonization in wheat, the only response of wheat to isolate NT6 was an increase in plant height at harvest. The efficacy of G. clarum NT4 on both crops appeared to be related to its ability to produce more arbuscular colonization than G. mosseae NT6. Dual inoculation of seedlings with G. clarum NT4 and G. mosseae NT6 resulted in competition between these two isolates. This was evident from a comparison of plant shoot dry weight and grain yield, and VAMF spore production on the two crops inoculated either with isolate NT4 alone or in combination with NT6. G. mosseae NT6 reduced the efficacy of G. clarum NT4 by 16% when dual inoculated on lentil, but had no effect when the host was wheat. Based on spore production, it was found that G. clarum NT4 was more competitive than G. mosseae NT6 when dual inoculated on lentil or wheat. Isolate NT4 produced ca. 2000 and 500 spores/100 g substrate, respectively, in the lentil and wheat pots, which was approximately 2–3 times more spores than those produced by isolate NT6 with either crop. When the plants were dual inoculated, there was a 15–19% reduction in spore production by G. clarum NT4 and a 50–70% decrease in spore production by G. mosseae NT6. Our results show that G. clarum NT4 was more competitive and effective in its ability to colonize and increase the growth and yield of lentil and wheat than G. mosseae NT6 or G. versiforme NT7. The relative performance of isolate NT4 with different host plants suggests that this VAMF isolate exhibits a host preference for lentil.

Notes: Abstract The velocity distribution of evaporated Zr atoms has been measured by means of laser-induced fluorescence using a cw dye laser by scanning the laser line across the Doppler-broadened absorption line profile of the atoms. It is shown that the experimental data can be explained on the basis of an excitation theory for a three-level system developed from basic principles. It was calculated that the probability for an atom to be in the excited state mainly depends on the radiation-power density of the laser and on the residence time of the atom in the exciting laser light. It was found that the laser frequency must be well stabilized in order to meet the assumptions in the excitation calculation. Otherwise deviations to the theoretical predictions appear in the experimental results due to the jitter of the dye laser.

Notes: Abstract Spatial separation of wavelengths in a CO2-laser resonator helps to avoid competitions. We have achieved this by means of a nearly concentric resonator with a grating or prism in its center. Thus, we demonstrated independent multiline emission with a variety of output spectra. The temporal sequence of the lines was conveniently controlled by varying their losses.

Notes: Abstract We have found a simple analytical expression which describes the relation between amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and small-signal gain in short-pulse amplifiers. It is also shown that the contrast of the short pulse to the ASE is weakly dependent on the saturation of the ASE, and influenced mainly by the saturation of the short pulse. The theoretical considerations were verified by measurements.

Notes: Abstract Amplified spontaneous emission of a dye cell is parametrically amplified in barium betaborate (BBO) crystals. Pumping the system by the third harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser a tuning range from 3500 to 25080 cm−1 is accessible with energy conversion efficiencies of several percent. Properties of ultrashort light pulses in the visible and UV spectral range are presented. A spectral width of 10 cm−1 and a pulse duration of approximately 20 ps are measured.

Notes: Abstract Continuous scanning of a 1 GHz pulsed laser line using only one 5-cm grating as an intracavity selective element is obtained from a pulsed dye laser pumped by a Nd: YAG (8 ns-532 nm) laser. Such a single-grating dye laser operates in the same way as a real double-grating grazing incidence laser and provides an appreciable improvement of the resolution (enhancement factor ≈2), compared with previous grazing incidence ones. The superiority of this laser cavity has been proved for single-longitudinal-mode operation.

Notes: Abstract An analysis of cw synchronously pumped dye lasers is presented. Under the assumption that the cavity (tuning element) bandwidth is much wider than the bandwidth of the transform limited pulses generated, the pulse forming dynamics is rigorously treated. It is shown that for a finite mismatch between the lengths of the dye and the pump lasers, a steady-state pulse develops in the dye laser cavity with a conserved pulseshape. The characteristics (energy, shape, peak power, duration) of these pulses of ultimate width are quantitatively determined as a function of cavity mismatch. An analytical solution for the pulse envelope is determined, which yieldsI(t)∝Sech2(t/t p ) to a good approximation.

Notes: Abstract A new method for determining trace amounts of elements in a substance has been developed. It is based on thermal evaporation and atomization of a substance in vacuum and detection of the released trace atoms by the laser stepwise photoionization technique. A rather effective way of detecting atoms is their multistep excitation to Rydberg states by the radiation of tunable dye lasers with their subsequent ionization by electric field pulses. The analytical laser spectrometer consisting of several tunable, pulsed dye lasers, a vacuum chamber with an atomizer and a recording system is described. The microimpurities of elements have been detected in pure materials: the contents of Na impurities in CdS crystals (2×10−6%) and Al impurities in germanium (2×10−7%). The detection limit of about 10−9% was determined. A technique for direct determination of the content of elements in natural water and human blood is described. A high sensitivity, universality and other merits of the method enable it to be used in determining traces of many important elements at a level of 10−8 to 10−11% almost in any matrix.

Notes: Abstract We have shown that distributed feedback dye lasers are capable of generating single transform-limited pulses of 1.6–3.5 ps duration when pumped by a mode-locked Nd: YAG laser. A short-pulse amplifier has been constructed in which the level of amplified spontaneous emission could be kept below 10−3 by properly taking into account the polarization anisotropy of the gain and by precise timing of the pump pulses. A sensitive autocorrelator is described which allows to measure pulse duration in a single shot.

Notes: Abstract Absorption recovery kinetics data on the picosecond time-scale of a high signalto-noise ratio can be obtained by using continuously operating synchronously modelocked dye lasers. We show that such data make it possible to determine multiple exponential decays with small differences in rate constants. We also show that an absolute prerequisite to accomplish this is that the measurements are performed at a number of different wavelengths, and that the decays are monitored in a time interval corresponding to several lifetimes. These considerations are demonstrated by measurements on two carbocyanine dyes, DQOCI and pinacyanol, respectively.

Notes: Abstract A cw uv copper hollow cathode laser is described, which could be operated for a longer time duration with an output power of 7 mW in the 260 nm region. A double-cathode configuration with a protection for the mirrors from metal-vapour deposition is presented. Characteristics of the laser output power, the spontaneous emission, and the ion densities in the negative glow were measured as depending on the discharge current, the neon gas pressure, and the size of the cathode slit. The observed saturation of the laser output power at high discharge current (1 A/cm2) and the optimum slot size are discussed.

Notes: Abstract For the first time stable cw output of a FIR-CO2 hybrid laser has been achieved at wavelengths shorter than 300 μm. Due to the saturable absorber characteristic of the FIR laser gas, cw or pulsed emission is observed on both, the CO2 and the FIR laser output, depending on the operating conditions. Results are reported on different resonant lines in CH3OH and the 67 μm Raman line in NH3. The good efficiency of this laser is also demonstrated by the excitation of two new emission lines in CH3OH, namely 49 and 56 μm, pumped by 9R(22) and 9R(24), respectively.

Notes: Abstract We describe a study, performed using heterodyne techniques, of the frequency fluctuations of two completely independent ring dye lasers locked to independent reference cavities. Single laser linewidths of less than 750 Hz were achieved, the principal limitation being residual vibrations from the noisy laboratory environment. With future design and environmental improvements, ultranarrow linewidths are expected thus providing a useful tool for a great variety of high precision experiments.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical description of a three-pulse transient grating technique is given where the pump pulses form orientational gratings. Including energy relaxation and angular reorientation the temporal behavior of the diffraction efficiency and energy transmission is discussed with respect to the dependence on the corresponding rate constants and the results are compared with experimental data for Rh6G and RhB. The polarization plane of the pulse diffracted by the grating is found to be rotated in dependence on its initial polarization.

Notes: Abstract Ablation of polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a high temperature thermoplastic, by XeCl laser radiation occurs at fluences in excess of 0.07±0.01 J cm−2. The volatile products of ablation are CO and C2H2 with smaller quantities of CH4, C4H2, C6H6 and other C3 and C4 hydrocarbons. At fluences close to the threshold ablation produces involatile material of relatively high molecular weight but at high fluences extensive disruption of the PEEK structure occurs with conversion of all of the oxygen in the polymer to carbon monoxide.

Notes: Abstract As a rule, phase gratings yield no power transfer in two-beam excite-probe experiments. We show that an exception to this rule is that of ultrashort-pulse excite-probe experiments involving slow phase effects, such as thermal gratings, occurring in a moving sample medium under high-repetition-rate excitation. A symmetric coherent artifact results, and depending on the direction of the sample motion, its amplitude can be positive, negative, or zero. This artifact occurs only in multiple-pulse experiments, involving accumulated gratings, while, on the other hand, the antisymmetric artifact (described by Palfrey and Heinz) results only from single-pulse effects. We discuss these two complementary effects and present both theory and experiments.

It is found that many kinds of mechanisms, including energy pooling, harmonic generation, quadrupole radiation, excitation transfer, and multiwave mixing etc., are involved in producing these lines. Notes: Abstract A comprehensive control system has been developed for the stabilization of internalmirror He-Ne lasers to their power envelopes. It is designed particularly for use with lasers emitting at 552, 505, or 490 THz (543, 594, 612 nm). The aim has been to combine convenience in routine operation with good day-to-day resettability and minimal frequency drift during a day. The lasers are observed to emit in up to four modes simultaneously and their tuning behaviour is highly alignment-sensitive. They also tend to flip between modes having orthogonal linear planes of polarization. Reliable control of polarization and mode frequency are possible using permanent magnets and active length control through thermal expansion. The stabilized single-frequency outputs have frequency drifts of about 2×10−8 per year, and powers of between 150 μW and 850 μW.

Notes: Abstract Improvements in output pulse energy and efficiency of a conventional capacitor-transfer-type discharge excimer laser with automatic preionization have been achieved by extending the discharge volume and resulting moderate pumping of the active medium. The discharge laser produces a pulse energy of more than 1 J for XeCl, KrF, and ArF lasers in square beams of about 2×2 cm2, and the maximum overall efficiency observed is 2.9% for XeCl, 3.2% for KrF and 1.8% for ArF. The laser device has been involved in a picosecond (∼ 32 ps) XeCl laser amplification system, and was operated as an amplifier at a repetitive frequency of 10 Hz. Saturation fluence for XeCl laser was measured to be 1.4 mJ/cm2, and the picosecond pulse energy of ∼40 mJ was extracted from the amplifier.

Notes: Abstract Intense multi and single line laser operation is reported from TEA semiconductively preionised HF/DF lasers employing various discrete components or flat plate excitation circuits. The performance, the spectral and the beam characteristics of these lasers are given and are compared to the characteristics of previously described HF/DF lasers. Their improved performance parameters are explained in terms of the preionizing action of the semiconductors, the low inductance of the circuits employed and the good matching of the voltage and current waveforms of the excitation circuitry to their excitation. Finally, their potential in specific applications, like infrared vitreous surgery (HF) or atmospheric laser beam propagation (DF), is stressed.

Notes: Abstract Direct observation of the magnetic structure of transitions in molecular iodine is first reported. Using the method of saturated absorption spectroscopy in an external cell with I2 vapour located in a longitudinal magnetic field we resolved the magnetic structure of the components of the hyperfine structure of the transition $${}^1\sum _g^ + (v^ = 0,{\text{j}}^ = 13,15) \to {}^3\prod _{ou}^ + (v^\prime = 43,{\text{j}}^\prime = 12,16).$$ The gyromagnetic constants of the upper and lower levels of the transition have been found. An estimation of the frequency shift of saturation resonances in the magnetic field has been made.

Notes: Abstract We represent an ultrafast beam-deflection method as a simple and powerful tool for the time-resolved measurement of induced changes of the refractive index in the order of Δn=10−5. The method is applied for measuring the changes of components of the refractive index parallel and perpendicular to the pump-pulse polarization on a femtosecond time scale. Fused silica and CS2 are used as samples for demonstrating our method.

Notes: Abstract A method of increasing the injection-locking efficiency by external narrow-band radiation relying on a space-frequency separation in a nonlinear absorber (spectral contraster) placed into the high-power dye-laser cavity is proposed. It is shown that this method permits an increase of the energy conversion efficiency into a narrow-band line (∼ 10−3 nm) up to 90% with a laser output energy of about 1 J and a pulse duration of more than 1 µs.

Notes: Abstract Laser diodes, optically narrowed using the technique of resonant optical feedback, have been frequency stabilised to hyperfine transitions of the two Rb D lines at 780 nm and 795 nm. The best frequency stability of the beat between two similar lasers was 1.5 kHz (4 parts in 1012 of the optical frequency) observed for an averaging time of 10 s. A frequency reproducibility of 44 kHz (one standard deviation) was observed on strong isolated hyperfine components, and possible causes of frequency shift were investigated. Values for the Rb hyperfine intervals were obtained, leading to an improved determination of the excited state hyperfine constants of 85Rb and 87Rb, and the isotope shift. The absolute frequencies of the hyperfine transitions of the two D lines were determined interferometrically by comparison with an 127I2-stabilised He-Ne laser at 633 nm. Measurements were made on component c′ at 795 nm and the d/f level crossing at 780 nm. The frequencies were found to be 377106271.6 MHz and 384227981.9 MHz respectively under the chosen conditions, with an uncertainty of ±0.4 MHz, limited by knowledge of the reference frequency. These results represent the most accurate and complete characterisation to date of laser diodes stabilised to Doppler-free Rb spectra.

Notes: Abstract This paper deals with a theoretical and experimental study of the picosecond synchronization of a streak camera used in conjunction with a cw actively mode-locked laser system. The temporal resolution of two synchronization set-ups, a passive device (sweep obtained directly from the mode-locker oscillator) and an active arrangement (deflection derived from the recurrent laser pulses through a photodiode and a tunnel diode) has been examined. On the basis of the stochastic analysis it has been possible to interpret the experimental results for both configurations: in particular, it has been demonstrated that even in the presence of phase noise in the laser signal, perfect synchronization can be achieved.

Notes: Abstract We present investigations on the influence of mode matching on the efficiency of longitudinally pumped solid state lasers. In a theoretical part we enhance an existing model for four level lasers from idealized cylindrical modes to arbitary pump and laser modes in a random relative position thereby neglecting beam deformation due to thermal effects. The theoretical predictions were confirmed experimentally with an end-pumped Nd:YAG rod operated at 1064 nm. To investigate the effect of misalignment on the efficiency we used a Ti-Sapphire pump laser which was displaced relative to the laser beam. To establish the influence of arbitary pump modes on laser performance a diode laser equipped with coupling optics served as pump source for the same resonator. The resulting decrease in slope efficiency compared to the Ti-Sapphire pumped system could be explained in terms of limited mode overlap due to the characteristic pump field distribution produced by the diode coupling optics.

Notes: Abstract The pyrolytic laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) of tungsten microstructures in the form of spots has been investigated. Fused quartz substrates and a mixture of WF6 and H2 have been employed in the experiments. Different shapes of spots related to different partial pressures of WF6 and H2 have been revealed. The results can qualitatively be described by a combination of surface reactions and gas-phase reactions resulting in tungsten deposition and surface etching.

Notes: Abstract Calculations of the effects of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in laser amplifiers designed to amplify sub-picosecond pulses are presented. A one-dimensional code is used with some simple approximations to account for aspect ratio variation in cases of cylindrical symmetry. Gain depletion due to ASE is compared for various multi-pass geometries. Optimisation for short pulse amplification of a telescopic, beam-expanding, 4-pass amplifier is considered.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we describe the experimental investigation of the post-breakdown development of a helium plasma generated by a hybrid 10 μm CO2 laser pulse. As a result we found that a long tail and a high energy of the CO2 laser pulse cause multiple successive breakdown in the gas. We have measured the time to the first breakdown and the time between first and second breakdown as functions of gas pressure and laser pulse peak intensity as well as the spatial intensity distribution of the transmitted laser pulse. Among the relevant mechanisms self-focusing is not observed before the second breakdown.

Notes: Abstract An optical parametric oscillator (OPO), as a novel kind of broadband Stokes source, is employed for coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). Compared to the conventional dye laser configuration OPO-CARS offers practical advantages. The tunable OPO allows a fast and comfortable frequency tuning. The excitation bandwidth of about 35 cm−1 (FWHM) limits the spectral range of effective and stable single pulse CARS generation but can be used to enhance selected spectral structures.

Laser pulse width value modifications, different laser wavelengths generated in the 2+ system and voltage pulse period modifications are analysed in order to show that isobutane, in very reduced quantities, generates a preionizing effect that can be higher than that produced by a conventional wire preionization system.

Notes: Abstract Lasing and fluorescence properties of ten dyes covering the spectral range from 400 nm to 800 nm were studied in a silica matrix prepared by the sol-gel technique. The dye-doped sol-gel silica samples fluoresced strongly under laser excitation. Many of the samples were also induced to superradiate. In comparison to dyes in alcohol solvents, significant red-shifting was observed in the sol-gel silica fluorescence spectra. Plausible causes of the red-shift are discussed.

The criterion for the efficient amplitude modulation of the laser light by a mechanical chopper is formulated.

Notes: Abstract This review covers the field of vapor-phase dye lasers (VPDL) with special emphasis on prospects of gas lasers with optical pumping. Some peculiarities of the gaseous active medium and a possibility to control its density near the critical point are discussed. High specific laser energies (∼0.3J/cm−3), low thresholds, and high efficiencies (20–40%) made it possible to construct a powerful tunable VPDL.

Notes: Abstract A long-path absorption procedure for the determination of tropospheric OH concentrations is described in detail. Initial measurements using this method were carried out in Frankfurt a. M. By including in the evaluation the visible radiation of a frequencydoubled dye laser used in the measurements, it was possible to mathematically reduce the signal fluctuations caused by the scattering and density fluctuations of tropospheric air. The resulting detection limit was 3×106 OH per cm3. SO2 concentrations which had to be simultaneously determined in order to eliminate an interference effect, could be detected in the range of 1–40 ppb on the absorption path.

Notes: Abstract This report describes an experimental examination of the output characteristics of the continuous-wave (cw) carbon monoxide flame chemical laser (FCL) of the CS2/O2/N2O type in case of small CS2/O2 reactants ratios (tipically CS2/O2≦1/10). A linear burner which gives a homogeneous and stable flame was used during the experimental study. The measurements of temperature distribution in CS2/O2 as well as CS2/O2/N2O flames show maximum temperatures of 1040 and 890 K, respectively. The addition of nitrous oxide (N2O) leads to dramatically enhanced output laser power caused primarily by V−V transfer processes. A chemical efficiency, based on the reaction O+CS→CO*+S, of 3% was achieved. The spectral composition of the CO FCL of the CS2/O2/N2O type shows lasing in the region from 5.130 to 5.586 μm. Experimental results were obtained with a nondispersive optical cavity.

Notes: Abstract A continuously operating jet stream dye laser was pumped by a multiwavelength-multimode argon-ion-laser with a pump power up to 200 W. Rhodamine 6G-chloride was dissolved in a water-polyvinylalcohol-ammonyx solution. The dye laser was prism-tunable between 560 and 650 nm with maximum output power at 600 nm. The maximum output power of the cw dye laser was 43 W without tuning element and 33 W with a prism placed inside the cavity. Operation of a jet stream dye laser with a pump power higher than 200 W and an efficiency of about 30% seems to be possible.

Notes: Abstract A simple model of the energy transfer between a booster dye and the active dye in a flashlamp pumped planar waveguide dye laser is described. Analytical results are compared with experiments for several dyes in the 600–650 nm region. A twofold increase of laser output was found at a wavelength (630 nm) which is of particular interest for several applications.

Notes: Abstract The output of a CO2 laser, operating on theP I(18) transition of13C16O2 at 26941 GHz (11.128 μm) was phase-locked to a 5 MHz signal from a primary Cs frequency standard by means of a frequency chain having only CO2 lasers as infrared sources. Simultaneously, four other CO2 lasers in the chain were phase-locked to the 26941 GHz output. This provided CO2 laser frequencies at 26 450 305, 26 940 815, 28 694 625, 29 442 480, and 33 185 715 MHz having zero long-term-average frequency error relative to the Cs standard, and the ±10−13 (≃3 Hz) long-term absolute uncertainty of the standard.

Notes: Abstract It is shown by numerical analysis based on Lamb's equations of motion, that standing-wave lasers with purely homogeneously broadened emission lines exhibit regular multimode oscillations. Specifically, modes lying far from the line centre are quenched due to mode competition, and the amplitudes of the oscillating modes approach steady-state values. The stabilization of the amplitudes is normally accompanied, or followed, by an evolution of the phases towards a phase-locked regime, where the relative phasesψ n = 2φ n −φ n + 1 −φ n − 1 [φ n phase in then th mode, defined by (6)] attain either the value 0 or ± π. The build-up times for the relative phases are found to vary over a wide range.

Notes: Abstract We describe the generation of excimer-laser pulses of 〈10 ps pulse width and up to 40 mJ pulse energy at 248.5 nm and their use in the measurement of ps gain dynamics in a KrF amplifier. Small-signal gain of 〉2×104, saturation energy density of 2.0 mJ/cm2, and gain recovery time of 4 ns were measured. In contrast to XeCl* no short-gain rcovery time was found in KrF* and the stored inversion could be fully depleted bya single ps pulse.

Notes: Abstract Near-infrared laser action of nitrogen atoms was obtained in a hollow cathode discharge. Four laser lines at wavelengths of 1358.2, 939.3, 938.7, and 862.9 nm were observed in the cw mode. In addition, the laser line at 904.6 nm was observed in quasi-cw operation in the afterglow for the first time. It is supposed that resonant charge exchange between He+ and N2 followed by predissociation of N 2 + is an important way of populating the upper laser levels.

Notes: Abstract The circulation of a synchronously mode locked dye laser pulse in a linear cavity configuration containing a dye cell as an active medium and a bandwidth-limiting element is treated. The condition that the pulse shape reproduces after each cavity round-trip provides a nonlinear integro-differential equation for the steady-state pulse shape. For the solution of this equation an approximate method, not limited to small pulse energies, is given and the pulse duration, intensity, energy, asymmetry of the pulse shape, stable regions and other interesting parameters are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A sync-pumped cw dye laser system has been used to produce subpicosecond pulses. Pulses as short as 0.7 ps, assuming a single-sided exponential pulse shape, were observed. A set of experiments was performed to investigate the origin and effects of noise in the sync-pumped system. A digital and an analog feedback loop have been designed to optimize the pulse width. The noise has been lowered by 10 dB for frequencies up to 10 kHz; long-term drift is also controlled by this method. A four-stage dye laser amplifier, pumped by a Nd:YAG laser which operates at a 10-Hz repetition rate, is synchronized electronically to the dye-laser picosecond pulses. A gain of 3×106 has been achieved.

Notes: Abstract C, N, O, F, Cl, and Br red and infrared laser emission was investigated using hollow cathode discharges in gas mixtures of helium and molecules containing the corresponding atoms. A total of 33 laser lines with wavelengths from 0.7 to 2.0μm was observed. Three laser lines of atomic C, five laser lines of atomic N, two laser lines of atomic Cl and five laser lines of atomic Br were observed for the first time. Dissociation charge transfer and dissociative excitation transfer are suggested as being responsible for populating the upper laser levels.

Notes: Abstract The initial stage of thermochemical instability induced by an absorbing inclusion within a transparent matrix, which irradiated by a laser beam, is studied. The instability results in a low threshold (formally non-threshold) optical breakdown of the matrix. It is brought about by the additional absorption of the laser light by the products of the chemical reactions in the matrix. The instability is characterized by a certain induction time when the rate of the chemical reactions is almost steady. When the induction is over, their rate rapidly increases. Theoretical estimate of the induction time are offered. The experimental study of the induction time dependence on the laser-beam intensity confirmed the theoretical estimation.

Notes: Abstract Isotope separation of tritium by CO2 laser-induced multiphoton dissociation (MPD) of C2TF5 is reported for the first time. The MPD spectrum obtained for C2TF5 comprised a broad peak at about 940 cm−1 where C2HF5 was nearly transparent. The unimolecular dissociation of C2TF5 was induced with much lower laser fluence than that for CTF3, another working molecule we proposed for laser isotope separation of tritium. The mechanisms and kinetics of the dissociation of C2TF5 and C2HF5 were investigated under various experimental conditions: laser frequency, pulse energy, pulse duration, tritium concentration, sample pressure, buffer gas pressure and irradiation geometry. Single-step separation factors exceeding 500 were achieved with the most efficientP(20) line in 00o–10o0 transition at 944.2 cm−1.

Notes: Abstract A time standard based on the use of an optical oscillation period of a frequencystable He−Ne laser as a time scale is first described. We obtained highly frequency-stable oscillations in the SHF range that were locked to the oscillations of a He−Ne laser stabilized to an absorption resonance in methane at 3.39 μm. A direct comparison of frequency stabilities of a rubidium standard and He−Ne/CH4 laser has been made. The absolute measurement of the frequency of the He−Ne/CH4 laser we performed gave a new value of frequency.

Notes: Abstract A comparison of the operating characteristics of the high-voltage regime of the discharge in a hollow-cathode tube, the hollow-canthode discharge (HCD) and the discharge to a plane cathode are presented. The disappearnce of the hollow-cathode effect and the transition to a high-voltage discharge after inserting several anode rods into the cathode cylinder is exhibited. The similarity between the operating characteristics of such a high-voltage discharge and of a plane cathode discharge is shown. The loss of ions at the anode rods, as well at insulators or floating conductors is believed to be the reason behind the increase of the operating voltage and the disappearance of HCD characteristics. Practical means of increasing the operating voltage are mentioned.

Notes: Abstract The time-dependent intensity profile of pulsed KrF excimer laser radiation reflected from polyimide is determined over a range of laser fluences, from well below to above the ablation threshold. The reflected laser beam is truncated once the incident laser radiation exceeds a threshold fluence, i.e., truncation depends on the energy per unit area and not on the intensity, analogous to results for the ablation threshold and the etch depth per pulse. The threshold fluence for pulse truncation corresponds to the onset of ablation. The results indicate that the truncation is not due to laser plasma interactions at these fluences. A general mechanism is discussed involving a time dependent index of refraction.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the laser performance of an X-ray preionized ten-liter volume, electron-avalanche discharge XeCl system, operated at dc charging voltages of up to 70 kV both with and without X-ray preionization. An output energy of more than 11J uniformly distributed over a (7×10) cm2 spot size was achieved using a multichannel spark-gap as the main discharge switch. The discharge was also successfully operated in the switchless mode, yielding a 4.8 J output energy and a 0.9% efficiency. The time-resolved gain measurements provided information on the laser discharge evolution.

Notes: Abstract The effect of resonant laser-light upon a charge-exchange source of eV-range sodium atoms is to decrease the Na kinetic energy by about 2 eV. The mechanism probably involves a reduction of the space charge in the low-energy ion precursors. The reduction is caused by electrons created in collisional ionization of laser-excited atoms. This is related to the well-known optogalvanic effect. A knowledge of the existence of this effect can be important for the design of experiments involving laser driven chemistry.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the optogalvanic effect (OGE) in the external cavity OG cell as a function of CO2 gas pressure, discharge current and chopping frequency. Usefulness of these investigations with regards to optogalvanic frequency stabilization of CO2 lasers has been discussed. In particular, we find that operation of the OG cell at low pressure (∼2.5 Torr) in conjunction with high (∼800 Hz) modulation offers the best condition for stabilization.

Notes: Abstract A photoacoustic intracavity configuration is presented; a resonant photoacoustic cell excited in its first longitudinal mode is placed inside the cavity of a CO2 waveguide laser. Due to the high laser power and the sharp intracavity focus, saturation effects occur in the excitation and relaxation process of absorbing C2H4 molecules. A more optimal configuration is applied to measure the C2H4 emission of several Rumex species. A detection sensitivity of 6 ppt (parts per trillion) C2H4 is reached, equivalent to a minimal detectable absorption of 1.8×10−10 cm−1.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes detailed experimental studies of the width, shape and shifts of saturated absorption resonances at the X(v″=0, j″=13)→B(v′=43, j′=12) transition of molecular iodine. Use of the geometry of oppositely travelling and unidirectional waves in the experiment and study of the luminescence decay under pulsed excitation allowed estimation of the cross-sections of elastic and inelastic scattering of I2 molecules on the upper and lower levels of transition. The observed nonlinear dependence of width and shift of the saturation resonance on iodine pressure is explained by the influence of elastic collisions with no phase mismatch.

Notes: Abstract We report on two-wavelength operation of a CPM ring dye laser employing Rhodamine 6G as gain medium and a new styryl dye as saturable absorber. Two trains of femtosecond pulses at different wavelengths are simultaneously generated under proper alignment of the laser. The secondary pulse train is attributed to the laser action of the absorber dye. Auto- and cross-correlation measurements are performed to determine the temporal characteristics of the laser in the double mode-locking regime.

Notes: Abstract A two-stage Raman-conversion system pumped with a Q-switched alexandrite laser is proposed for the generation of broadly tunable infrared radiation. The first stage is a high-pressure Raman cell which accepts a pump beam in long-focusing or parallel-beam geometry, while the successive second one is made of a multi-pass Raman cell with repeated focusing. Using a selected combination of vibrational or rotational Raman shifting by H2, a spectrum ranging from 0.75 μm to 15 μm can be covered by this system.

Notes: Abstract A novel geometry is presented for transversally pumped, short-pulse dye and discharge-pumped excimer amplifiers. Significant increase of the homogeneity and of the cross-section of the active medium seen by the short pulses is accomplished by proper choice of the incident angle of the beam to be amplified. The proposed scheme makes it possible to substitute the sophisticated wide aperture, homogeneously pumped amplifiers by standard devices.

Notes: Abstract The process of laser mode-locking with spatial dispersion of the radiation in the gain medium is analyzed. It is shown by a simple model in the frequency description that simultaneous phase matching of the axial modes in both space and time may be accomplished. The reduction of the mode competition due to the spatial dispersion favors the mode-locking process and leads to broadening of the locked spectrum compared with the case of no dispersion. After space-to-time transformation this effect allows one to obtain shorter pulses than those produced by standard techniques.

Notes: Abstract This work reports the role some additives have in pre-ionizing a N2 TE UV laser (337.1 nm). The modifications in both stimulated radiation characteristics and excitation-pulse period prove the different ionizing power of each element. The laser operating without a pre-ionizing wire device and with N2 plus different additives was able to generate pulses with a temporal width of the same order than those obtained when it was operating with N2 and a pre-ionizing wire device. Also, a relation between ionization efficiency and interelectrode distance has been established allowing the prediction of conditions for optimum laser-pulse width generation.

Notes: Abstract Bi-directional and folded laser amplifiers are analysed in the constant intensity approximation. Simple analytical expressions are developed for gain, output intensity and extraction efficiency. The analysis is applied to electron-beam pumped KrF lasers and expressions for saturation intensity, small-signal gain coefficient and intrinsic efficiency in terms of gas composition and pump power per unit volume are given. The problem of fluorine burn-up in KrF lasers is discussed. Under certain conditions the analysis is shown to be equally applicable to oscillators and comparison is made with previous experimental results and computer code predictions.

Notes: Abstract Some new experimental data on the time development of ultrashort superfluorescence (SF) in the dye solution are presented. The correlation between temporal behaviour change and the change of the spectral and spatial intensity distribution gives direct evidence of the important role of the selffocusing phenomenon in the formation of the ultrashort SF pulse synchronized with the pumping one. The oriental relaxation of solvent molecules in the dye solution not only influences the duration of the dye SF via the selffocusing mechanism but also causes a temporal change of spontaneous emission spectrum. At least two different relaxation times were found in the fluorescence spectrum of the dye in several polar solutions.

Notes: Abstract A highly efficient frequency doubler is developed for femtosecond pulses. Design aspects of the device are discussed. Doubling bandwidth calculations have shown, that with one millimeter long crystals pulses as short as 10 fs can be frequency doubled. Experimental results testing the doubler with 300 fs, 496 nm pulses are presented showing no spectral narrowing.

Notes: Abstract The feasibility of using the electrically excited XeF(C»A) excimer medium as an efficient wideband amplifier in the blue-green region of the spectrum has been investigated. Calculations show that for an intense blue-green optical flux input the amplification characteristics of XeF(C»A) improve, as a result of both bleaching of the pump induced absorbers and by additional production of XeF(C) level population. The removal of one of the major absorbing species, Xe** in the XeF (C»A) laser mixture by means of a pulsed ruby laser probe beam has been demonstrated.
