    The hydrological signature of a seismogenic source: coseismic hydrological changes in response to the 1915 Fucino (Central Italy) earthquake (2015)

    Description: The M ∼ 7 1915 Fucino (Central Italy) earthquake represents one of the most destructive seismic events ever occurred in the Italian Peninsula. Several seismogenic faults have been proposed in the past decades as the source of the earthquake by means of different approaches and techniques that lead to a variety of speculations about the source mechanism and the fault location, often contrasting with one another. The 1915 earthquake produced a remarkable data set of 73 coseismic hydrological changes in the near and intermediate field that consist in variation of the flow of streams and springs, liquefaction, rise of water temperature and turbidity. In this paper, we study the coseismic water level changes induced by the 1915 earthquake in the near field to provide convincing clues on the geometry of the earthquake causative fault. We model the coseismic strain field induced by seventeen individual faults proposed through different approaches, and compare its pattern with the distribution of streamflow changes. We find: (i) clues on the most probable geometry of the earthquake causative fault. Best fits between modelled deformation and observed data are displayed by sources (derived by geological or seismological data) that share several distinctive features, as they are ∼135◦-striking, SW-dipping, 25–30-km-long normal faults located along the eastern side of the Fucino basin. These data point to the Serrone Fault and the Parasano Fault as the most likely causative structures and support the hypothesis that the coseismic ruptures observed in the field represented primary surface faulting. On the contrary, our calculations show that the Pescina Fault and the Ventrino Fault are secondary faults from the perspective of the hydrological response. Finally, one of the best scoring potential sources (from geological data) is a multifaulting system that considers the presence, in the central-western part of the basin, of fault splays synthetic and antithetic to the main seismogenic structures; therefore, we infer for these splays a possible active involvement in a 1915-like seismogenic process; (ii) evidence against a number of seismogenic structures that were previously associated with the earthquake. In particular, the plots of coseismic strain induced by sources uniquely derived by macroseismic or geodetic data prove to be inconsistent with the polarities of the hydrological signatures. Also, sources mainly characterized by reverse faulting and/or by right-lateral strike-slip component are discarded and (iii) as a final remark, we maintain that the study of the hydrological signatures of earthquake strain can offer an alternative tool in the investigation of the historical seismicity, to estimate the focal mechanism of major earthquakes capable of giving rise to a consistent data set of hydrological data.

    Up-dip directivity in near-source during the 2009 L'Aquila main shock (2015)

    Description: In this study we have investigated the forward directivity associated with the initial up-dip rupture propagation during the April 6th 2009 (MW 6.1) L’Aquila normal-faulting earthquake. The objective is the understanding of how the peculiar initial behavior of rupture history during the main shock has affected the near-source recorded ground motions in the L’Aquila town and surrounding areas. We have modeled the observed ground velocities at the closest near-source recording sites by computing synthetic seismograms using a discrete wavenumbers and finite difference approach in the low frequency bandwidth (0.02-0.4 Hz) to avoid site effects contaminations. We use both the rupture model retrieved by inverting ground motion waveforms and continuous high sampling-rate GPS time series as well as uniform-slip constant-rupture speed models. Our results demonstrate that the initial up-dip rupture propagation, characterizing the first three seconds of the rupture history during the L’Aquila main shock and releasing only ∼25% of total seismic moment, controls the observed ground motions in the near-source. This initial stage of the rupture is characterized by the generation of clear ground velocity pulses, which we interpret as a forward directivity effect. Our modeling results confirm a heterogeneous distribution of rupture velocity during the initial up-dip rupture propagation, since uniform rupture speed models overestimate up-dip directivity effects in the footwall of the causative fault. The up-dip directivity observed in the near field during the 2009 L’Aquila main shock is that predicted for a normal faulting earthquake by Somerville’s directivity model, but it differs from that inferred from far-field observations that conversely provide evidence of along-strike directivity. This calls for a careful analysis as well as for the realistic inclusion of rupture directivity to predict ground motions in the near source.

    Seismic structure beneath the Gulf of California: a contribution from group velocity measurements (2015)

    Description: Rayleigh wave group velocity dispersion measurements from local and regional earthquakes are used to interpret the lithospheric structure in the Gulf of California region. We compute group velocity maps for Rayleigh waves from 10 to 150 s using earthquakes recorded by broadband stations of the Network of Autonomously Recording Seismographs in Baja California and Mexico mainland, UNM in Mexico, BOR, DPP and GOR in southern California and TUC in Arizona. The study area is gridded in 120 longitude cells by 180 latitude cells, with an equal spacing of 10 × 10 km. Assuming that each gridpoint is laterally homogeneous, for each period the tomographic maps are inverted to produce a 3-D lithospheric shear wave velocity model for the region. Near the Gulf of California rift axis, we found three prominent low shear wave velocity regions, which are associated with mantle upwelling near the Cerro Prieto volcanic field, the Ballenas Transform Fault and the East Pacific Rise. Upwelling of the mantle at lithospheric and asthenospheric depths characterizes most of the Gulf. This more detailed finding is new when compared to previous surface wave studies in the region. A low-velocity zone in northcentral Baja at ∼28oN which extends east–south–eastwards is interpreted as an asthenospheric window. In addition, we also identify a well-defined high-velocity zone in the upper mantle beneath central-western Baja California, which correlates with the previously interpreted location of the stalled Guadalupe and Magdalena microplates. We interpret locations of the fossil slab and slab window in light of the distribution of unique post-subduction volcanic rocks in the Gulf of California and Baja California.We also observe a high-velocity anomaly at 50-km depth extending down to ∼130 km near the southwestern Baja coastline and beneath Baja, which may represent another remnant of the Farallon slab.

    Modelling the ocean site effect on seismic noise body waves (2015)

    Description: Secondary microseismic noise is generated by non-linear interactions between ocean waves at the ocean surface. We present here the theory for computing the site effect of the ocean layer upon body waves generated by noise sources distributed along the ocean surface. By defining the wavefield as the superposition of plane waves, we show that the ocean site effect can be described as the constructive interference of multiply reflected P waves in the ocean that are then converted to either P or SV waves at the ocean–crust interface. We observe that the site effect varies strongly with period and ocean depth, although in a different way for body waves than for Rayleigh waves. We also show that the ocean site effect is stronger for P waves than for S waves. We validate our computation by comparing the theoretical noise body wave sources with the sources inferred from beamforming analysis of the three seismogram components recorded by the Southern California Seismic Network. We use rotated traces for the beamforming analysis, and we show that we clearly detect P waves generated by ocean gravity wave interactions along the track of typhoon Ioke (2006 September). We do not detect the corresponding SV waves, and we demonstrate that this is because their amplitude is too weak.

    Description: Seismological modelling of the upper mantle of the Africa-Eurasia collision region has given images of its structure which can be used to supplement surface (geologic) information in the attempt to understand past and active tectonic processes. A foremost feature of the region is given by the sinuous Alpine-Mediterranean thrust belt, under which subducted lithosphere is imaged by seismic tomography as seismically fast material (colder than ambient rock). Several arcuate structures are present, combining an external thrust front with an internal extensional basin, originated by slab rollback: the Hellenic arc with the Aegean basin, the Calabrian arc with the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Betic-Rif with the Alboran Sea, and the Carpathians with the Pannonian basin. These systems are at different stages of their life, and all but the Hellenic-Aegean appear close to their terminal phase. Shape and extent of subducted slabs provide constraints on their evolution. Tomographic results, in all but the Hellenic-Aegean system, show a general lack of overall continuity of the subducted bodies, and in many cases support the idea that other processes, such as slab detachment or mantle delamination, contributed to shape the present day tectonics. Although tomographic results have steadily improved image resolution with time, differences between studies may lead to different interpretations. Better understanding of processes active at the late phases of subduction needs a close interplay between tomography, geology, and mantle dynamics calculations.

    Description: We investigate conceptually, analytically, and numerically the biases in the estimation of the b-value of the Gutenberg-Richter Law and of its uncertainty made through the least squares technique. The biases are introduced by the cumulation operation for the cumulative form of the Gutenberg-Richter Law, by the logarithmic transformation, and by the measurement errors on the magnitude. We find that the least squares technique, applied to the cumulative and binned form of the Gutenberg-Richter Law, produces strong bias in the b-value and its uncertainty, whose amplitudes depend on the size of the sample. Furthermore, the logarithmic transformation produces two different endemic bends in the Log(N) versus M curve. This means that this plot might produce fake significant departures from the Gutenberg-Richter Law. The effect of the measurement errors is negligible compared to those of cumulation operation and logarithmic transformation. The results obtained show that the least squares technique should never be used to determine the slope of the Gutenberg-Richter Law and its uncertainty.

    Description: Dr. Benouar presents a full and integrated study of the recent seismicity of Algeria and adjacent regions during the twentieth century. He has amassed an impressive amount of macroseismic information pertaining to individual earthquakes, which he combines with instrumental information to reassess the origin parameters of each event. In any compilation of earthquakes it is the additional information beyond the bare accumulation of figures and facts that adds interest and social understanding to the scientific appreciation of the earthquakes themselves. For this it is necessary to know the local conditions, and Dr. Benouar brings out for us very vivid1y the differences between reporting procedures at different times this century, and the ensuing difficulties. It would be most difficult for an outsider to gather the information he presents, and he makes good use of his knowledge of his native land, as well as his professional training as an engineer. We thus learn of the reluctance of the colonial powers to report on damage or casualties outside those inflicted on the expatriate community, and the general difficulties of finding information about earthquakes that occurred during the wars of independence, at a time when effects of even major earthquakes were sometimes minor compared to those of the war itself. He also does not spare us details of political difficulties that arose during periods of reconstruction following recent earthquakes. This work is not restricted, however, to description. He examines the underlying tectonics of the area and deduces estimates of hazard and risk in various parts of the country. He then proceeds to examine the engineering consequences and discuss future needs for building codes and civil protection. Dr. Benouar has produced a work which could well form a model for those wishing to undertake comprelzensive studies of seismicity of other areas, and the measures needed to reduce the effects of catastrophic earthquakes.

    Notes: Einige reine Ester und Äther des Vitamins A wurden nach dem von uns früher beschriebenen Aufbauprinzip dargestellt. Die Schmelzpunkte der synthetischen Krystallisate stimmen mit den bekannten Schmelzpunkten der entsprechenden Vitamin-A-Präparate aus Leberölen überein. Die Wirksamkeit der Ester (Standard-β-Carotin) berechnet auf 1 g Vitamin-A-Alkohol betrug 3,3±0,6 Millionen i. E. Der Methyläther besitzt annähernd die gleiche und der Butyläther deutlich geringere Wirksamkeit. Der Phenyläther vom Smp. 90-91° ist wenig wirksam. Die molare Extinktion bei 325-328 mm̈ aller Präparate betrug ca. 50 000 und die molare Extinktion der Carr-Price-Messung gab ebenfalls gleiche Werte. Die molare Exaltation des Systems der konjugierten Doppelbindungen wurde übereinstimmend mit 16,5±0,6 bestimmt. Die Messung der Sauerstoffempfindlichkeit im Warburg-Apparat zeigt, dass die Ester beständiger sind als der Methyläther und der Vitamin-A-Alkohol. Die alkalische Hydrolyse der Ester verläuft erwartungsgemäss als Reaktion 2. Ordnung.

Für den Mechanismus der reversiblen Lysergsäure-Isolysergsäure-Umlagerung wird eine Erklärung gegeben.

Der Umschlag erfolgt: bei Typ I, wenn das Reduktionsmittel total verbraucht ist (Totalreduktion); bei Typ II, wenn die Geschwindigkeit der Reaktionen (2) und (3) einander gleich werden (partielle Reduktion); bei Typ III, wenn [J'] die Empfindlichkeitsgrenze der Jodstärke-Reaktion erreicht, während Jod schon teilweise ausgeschieden ist (Jod-Vorlauf).

    Notes: 1. Wir haben die Synthese des Citrullins aus Ornithin durch die Mitochondrienfraktion der Leber (Ratte) bei Gegenwart von Glutamin untersucht. Bei Glutaminkonzentrationen von 20-30 μ Mol/cm3 ist das Amid mit oder ohne Zusatz von Ammoniumsalzen der Glutaminsäure plus Ammoniumsalz stark überlegen. Bei kleinen Konzentrationen, unter 3 μ Mol/cm3 liefert aber die Glutaminsäure unter allen Umständen mehr Citrullin als das Glutamin. Es ist also wenig wahrscheinlich, dass das Glutamin eine direkte Zwischenstufe der Synthese ist. Die Wirksamkeit des Amids lässt sich andererseits aber nicht einfach durch die Hydrolyse der Säureamidgruppe erklären. Dieselbe scheint eine spezifische Funktion zu haben. Das Glutamin steht offenbar zu einem Zwischenglied der Citrullinsynthese in enger Beziehung.

    Notes: Zusammenfassend ergibt unsere Untersuchung über im Kindesalter gebildete Harnsteine: 1Im Gegensatz zu den später entstehenden Harnkonkrementen, welche weit bevorzugt Harnsäuresteine darstellen, fehlen Harnsäurebildungen unter den im Kindesalter auftretenden Harnsteinen.2Weit vorherrschend sind vielmehr Struvitsteine wobei diese im Nierenbecken und in den Harnleitern multipel auftreten. In einem Fall hatte sich - offenbar zur Ausnahme ein solitärer Struvitstein in der Harnblase um einen Fremdkörper (Nadel) gebildet. Struvitkonkremente finden sich häufig bei alkalischem Urim mit Cysto-Pyelitis, Oxalat- und Harnsäuresteine dagegen zumeist bei saurem Urin. Struvitsteine können leicht rezidivieren.3Alle Nichtstruvitsteine, nämlich solche aus Csytin, Calciumoxalat-Monohydrat und -Dihydrat, waren Solitärsteine, ersterer in der Harnblase, letztere dagegen im Nierenbecken.

    Notes: L'expérience a montré que, seules jusqu'à présent les techniques d'ozonolyse comportant la réduction de l'ozonide préparé en milieu sec conduisent, pour quelques produits possédant le groupement 〉 C = CH2 générateur d'aldéhyde formique, à des résultats analytiques à peu près satisfaisants. La technique de Doeuvre appartient à cette catégorie. Elle présente divers défauts opératoires et le présent travail a conduit à une micro-méthode exempte de plusieurs de ces défauts. Dans les conditions élaborées, les déterminations de la néo-γ-irone, de plusieurs de ses dérivés, et de l'acide dextro-pimarique, sont satisfaisantes.

    Notes: Reduktion von 20α, 21-Oxydo-17-iso-allopregnan-diol-(3β, 17 β)-monobenzoat-(3) mit Li[AlH4] gab das bekannte 17-Iso-allopregnan-triol-(3β, 17 β, 20α). Durch Hydrierung von 20β, 21-Oxydo-17-iso-allopregnan-diol-(3β, 17β)-monoacetat-(3) mit Li[AlH4] wurde das unbekannte 17-Iso-allopregnan-triol-(3β, 17β, 20β) hergestellt; dieses wurde durch sein Diacetat charakterisiert und seine Konstitution wurde durch Abbau zu Androstanol-(3β)-on-(17) bewiesen. Der bisher als dieses Triol bezeichnete Stoff erwies sich als Gemisch von zwei bekannten Verbindungen. Die früher festgelegte Konfiguration der 17-Iso-allopregnan-tetrole-(3β, 17β, 20,21) wurde durch diese Reaktionen erneut bestätigt.

    Notes: Das Alkaloid Corynathein wurde durch Abbau mit Selen in eine Base C19H22N2, das Corynanthyrin, übergeführt. Durch Abbau letzterer Verbindung mit Ozon entstand ein Ozonid C19H22O3N2, das bei der Hydrolyse in ein Keton C19H22O2N2 überging. Letzteres liess sich hydrolytisch zu o-Aminopropiophenon und 3,4-Diäthylpyridin-6-carbonsäure aufspalten. Aus diesen Spaltstücken ergab sich die Konstitutionsformel des Corynanthyrins, die mit jener des Tetrabyrins nahe verwandt ist.

Ausgehend von diesem Tetrol sowie dem bereits beschriebenen 3-Monoacetat wird eine Reihe von Pregnanderivaten bereitet, unter anderem Progesteron, Desoxycorticosteron-acetat, 14-Oxy-14-iso-11-desoxy-corticosteron-acetat. Der letztgenannte Stoff wurde in kleiner Ausbeute bereits früher aus Digitoxigenin bereitet. Er ist mit Corticosteron isomer, erwies sich aber im Everse-de-Fremery-Test als unwirksam.

Bei der oben genannten Oxydation entsteht ein krystallisiertes neutrales Nebenprodukt, dem die Konstitution des 3β,11α-Diacetoxy-14-oxy-14-iso-20-keto-pregnan-21-säure-Lactons-(21→14) zukommt.

Durch Entfernen der Hydroxylgruppe und der hydrierbaren Doppelbindung von II wurde ein bisher unbekannter, tetracyclischer Kohlenwasserstoff C30H52 (IX) gewonnen. Der Alkohol II ist mit dem von I. Heilbron, E. R. H. Jones und P. A. Robins unlängst beschriebenen Butyrospermol identisch.

    Notes: 1. Bei der Umsetzung von Kupferoxyd bzw. Kupfer und Sauerstoff mit den Lösungen der Chloride von Nickel, Kobalt, Magnesium, Zink und Cadmium entstehen basische Doppelchloride der ungefähren stöchiometrischen Zusammensetzung 3 Cu(OH)2, MeCl2. Sie sind isomorph mit dem Kupferhydroxychlorid IIγ. Daraus folgt, dass sie nicht singulären Verbindungen entsprechen, sondern Glieder einer kontinuierlichen Mischkrystallreihe sind, d. h. dass im Kupferhydroxychlorid die Kupfer- durch andere Metallionen ersetzt werden können. Die einfach stöchiometrische Zusammensetzung ist auf die besonderen, bei der Herstellung herrschenden Verhältnisse zurückzuführen.

    Notes: La conversion du méthyl-3-linalol en méthyl-3-citrals au moyen du réactif chromique peut être effectuée de plusieurs manières, également satisfaisantes à l'échelle du laboratoire, celle des nérolidols en farnésals également. On obtient principalement, à partir du nérolidol extrait de l'essence de cabreuva, et après purification par l'intermédiaire de la combinaison hydrogénosulfitique, un des farnésals isomères, défini par plusieurs dérivés cristallisés et par dégradation en la géranylacétone dont la semicarbazone F. 96-96,5° et la dinitro-2,4-phénylhydrazone F. 72-73°.

    Notes: Aus dem durch Reduktion von Strychnin mittels LiAlH4 erhaltenen Strychnidin wurden das Chlormethylat, Chloräthylat, Chlor-n-propylat, Chlor-n-butylat und Chlorbenzylat dargestellt und auf ihre Curare-Wirkung geprüft. Mehrere dieser Verbindungen erwiesen sich als sehr stark Curare-wirksam. Vergleichsweise wurde auch die Curare-Wirkung von Dihydrostrychnidin-A-chlormethylat, Dihydrostrychnidin-A-chlor-benzylat, Strychnin-chlormethylat und Strychninchlor-benzylat untersucht.

    Notes: Im Hinblick auf die Tatsache, dass eine Kohlenoxydflamme in trockener Luft erlischt, wurde die Verbrennung von Kohlensuboxyd in trockener und feuchter Luft untersucht: 1Kohlensuboxyd brennt im Gegensatz zu Kohlenoxyd in trockener Luft weiter, wobei die Flamme jedoch ihre Struktur von Grund aus ändert. Während Kohlensuboxyd in feuchter Luft trübgelb mit einem dünnen blauen Saum brennt und stark zum Russen neigt, auch Russ an der Brennermüdung abscheidet, bildet sich in trockener Luft eine nicht russende, von der Mündung einige Millimeter abgehobene Flamme mit kleinem, weissglühendem Kegel an der Basis und grossem blauem Mantel.2Durch Luftzusatz entleuchtete Kohlensuboxydflammen erlöschen sofort in trockener Luft. Kohlenoxydflammen brauchen zum Weiterbrennen einen um so stärkeren Zusatz von Kohlensuboxyd je trockener die Verbrennungsluft ist.3In der trockenen Kohlensuboxydflamme stellt sich weitgehend das Boudouard'sche Gleichgewicht ein, durch das Kohlenoxyd gebildet wird. Dieses entweicht aus dem weissglühenden Kegel und verbrennt im äusseren Mantel der Flamme. Durch verschiedene Versuche wird die schon früher von Smithells behauptete Tatsache erhärtet, dass vorerhitztes Kohlenoxydgas in trockener Luft nicht erlischt, sondern weiterbrennt.

    Notes: Δ5-3-Chlor-androsten-17 β-ol und Oestradiol wurden in 17-Stellung mit 4-Nitro-2-sulfo-benzoesäure verestert. In beiden Fällen konnten die durch Reduktion der Nitrogruppe erhältlichen 4-Amino-2-sulfobenzoesäureester nicht analysenrein erhalten werden.

    Notes: L'hydrogénation de la β-ionone, en solution alcoolique, au contact du nickel de Raney, à 20° et à la pression atmosphérique donne, lorsqu'on limite l'absorption d'hydrogène à une molécule, un mélange de dihydro-β-ionone et de cis-dihydro-ionone. Celle-ci est le stéréoisomère de la dihydro-ionone préparée par Prelog et Frick par la condensation du trans-dihydro-cyclo-citral et de l'acétone. Lorsqu'on poursuit l'hydrogénation, on obtient aisément un mélange de dihydro-β-ionone et de cis-tétrahydro-ionone. L'étude de l'hydrogénation de la β-irone donne des résultats analogues, qui feront l'objet d'une prochaine communication.
