    Description: Abstract
Description: The 'Earthquake Network’ (EQN) is an app which detects earthquakes by creating an ad-hoc network of smartphones' accelerometer sensors and provides early warnings for earthquakes via the same smartphone app. Detections are not due to individual smartphone measurements but due to near-simultaneous trigger signals from clusters of smartphones running the app. Therefore detections are normally located in the closest populated regions to an earthquake's epicentre. These datasets compare sets of detections with the earthquake parameters published by seismic institutes in order to analyse the performance of the EQN network. One dataset contains 550 detections made by EQN between 2017-12-15 and 2020-01-31 in Chile, USA and Italy. Wherever possible, each detection was associated with an earthquake from the parameter catalogue of each country's seismic institute (CSN for Chile, USGS for USA and INGV for Italy). Associations were carried out automatically but also checked manually. The other dataset contains 134 detections from around the world that could be associated to earthquakes with magnitude ≥ M5 or magnitude ≥ M4.5 in Italy and the USA. There are 68 detections that are common to the first dataset. All detections were associated to parameters from the the USGS earthquake parameter catalogue for consistency.
    Description: Methods
Description: Earthquake parameters were retrieved from the seismic institutes via the FDSN protocol. The two datasets are encoded in csv files using ',' delimiters and with headers on the first row. Additional material is included to explain the contents of each column.

In order to investigate the mechanisms of EQN's earthquake detection system, we searched for seismic accelerometer stations with publically available data that were close to the EQN detection locations (rather than close to the epicentre). This confirmed that EQN's detections followed strong shaking motions but that detections could follow both P-phase or S-phase rather than consistantly being sensitive to only one particular phase. It also showed that detections generally occurred between 0 - 5 seconds after the peak ground acceleration measured by the seismic station. Analysis was conducted on 550 detections made by the EQN system between 2017-12-15 and 2020-01-31 in Chile, Italy and the USA. Strong motion accelerometer data was collected from seismic stations via the FDSN protocol. The data was calibrated, detrended and a small time shift was applied to correct for differences in distances from the epicentre between the EQN detection and the strong motion seismic station. Calibrated waveform data was obtained for 410 EQN detections. Plots were made for each event and an analysis was carried out on the dataset to compare EQN detection times with the peak ground acceleration measured by the nearest seismic station. The dataset consists of a zip-file containing a table of results and some summary graphs derived from it as well as a set of 410 graphs of strong motion files that are presented as image files (png-files). The graphs show the waveform data for a seismic station within 20 km of each EQN detection.
    Description: Methods
Description: Ground motion data was retrieved from seismic networks via the FDSN protocol via the IRIS and ORFEUS institutes. This data was calibrated using station inventory files also downloaded via FDSN and filtered between 0.5 - 12 Hz. A small time shift was applied to correct for differences in distances from the epicentre between the EQN detection and the strong motion seismic station. This time shift assumed a seismc phase velocity of 8.04km/s.

    Description: Abstract
Description: We perform a teleseismic P-wave travel-time tomography to examine the geometry and structure of subducted lithosphere in the upper mantle beneath the Alpine orogen. The tomography is based on waveforms recorded at over 600 temporary and permanent broadband stations of the dense AlpArray Seismic Network deployed by 24 different European institutions in the greater Alpine region, reaching from the Massif Central to the Pannonian Basin and from the Po plain to the river Main. Teleseismic travel times and travel-time residuals of direct teleseismic P-waves from 331 teleseismic events of magnitude 5.5 and higher recorded between 2015 and 2019 by the AlpArray Seismic Network are extracted from the recorded waveforms using a combination of automatic picking, beamforming and cross-correlation. The resulting database contains over 162.000 highly accurate absolute P-wave travel times and travel-time residuals. For tomographic inversion, we define a model domain encompassing the entire Alpine region down to a depth of 600 km. Predictions of travel times are computed in a hybrid way applying a fast Tau-P method outside the model domain and continuing the wavefronts into the model domain using a fast marching method. We iteratively invert demeaned travel-time residuals for P-wave velocities in the model domain using a regular discretization with an average lateral spacing of about 25 km and a vertical spacing of 15 km. The inversion is regularized towards an initial model constructed from a 3D a priori model of the crust and uppermost mantle and a 1D standard earth model beneath. The resulting model provides a detailed image of slab configuration beneath the Alpine and Apenninic orogens. Major features are a partly overturned Adriatic slab beneath the Apennines reaching down to 400 km depth still attached in its northern part to the crust but exhibiting detachment towards the southeast. A fast anomaly beneath the western Alps indicates a short western Alpine slab whose easternmost end is located at about 100 km depth beneath the Penninic front. Further to the east and following the arcuate shape of the western Periadriatic Fault System, a deep-reaching coherent fast anomaly with complex internal stucture generally dipping to the SE down to about 400 km suggests a slab of European origin limited to the east by the Giudicarie fault in the upper 200 km but extending beyond this fault at greater depths. In its eastern part it is detached from overlying lithosphere. Further to the east, well-separated in the upper 200 km from the slab beneath central Alps but merging with it below, another deep-reaching, nearly vertically dipping high-velocity anomaly suggests the existence of a slab beneath the Eastern Alps of presumably the same origin which is completely detached from the orogenic root. The data are fully described in Paffrath et al. (2021). The model is provided as tabular data with six columns (1) Longitude (deg), (2) Latitude (deg), (3) Depth (km), (4) vp (km/s), (5) dVp (%), (6) Resolution.

    Description: Abstract
Description: Near Reykjavik/Iceland, a "soft stimulation” geothermal experiment was performed in the frame of the DESTRESS project in 2019. The installed seismic stations consist of short period, and borehole stations in and around Geldinganes, NE of Reykjavik. The task of this network is the monitoring of the seismic events in the area around the stimulation site. The installation started in late 2018 with 6 short period stations (Reykjavik Energy). Since July 2019 additional seismic stations were integrated as a small scale array on the island Geldinganes and additional short period stations. A borehole geophone chain was installed with 17 short period 3-component geophones with a vertical spacing of 10 meter in the depth interval 1040m to 1200 m. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code YG, and are embargoed until November 2025.

Description: This dataset contains subaquatic passive seismic recordings taken in September 2021 at 88 locations off Tuktoyaktuk Island as well as in a small lake (“Lake 3”) between the villages of Tuktoyaktuk and Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada. The measurements were part of the “Mackenzie Delta Permafrost Field Campaign” (mCan2021) within the “Modular Observation solutions for Earth Systems” (MOSES) program. Data is from a seismic intermediate-bandwidth seismic sensor lowered for few minutes to the bottom of the sea and lake, respectively, and from underwater short-period sensors deployed for a few days. The aim of the study was to determine the depth of the subaquatic permafrost (local lake and oceanic locations). Raw data is provided in proprietary “Cube” format and standard mseed format.

Description: Our understanding of the effects of ice on channel morphodynamics and bedload transport in northern rivers, frozen for several months, are hindered by the difficulties of ‘seeing’ through the ice. We use continuous seismic records of a small network at the Sävar River in northern Sweden to interpret processes and quantify water and sediment fluxes. We apply a seismic inversion approach to determine seasonal differences in hydraulics and bedload sediment transport under ice-covered vs. open-channel flow conditions and provide a first-order estimation of sediment flux in that Fennoscandian river. Analysis of seismic signals of ice-cracking support our visual interpretation of ice break-up timing and the main ice break-up mechanism as thermal rather than mechanical. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 8E, and are available under CC-BY 4.0 license.

    Description: Abstract
Description: We carried out a passive seismic experiment formed by 50 broadband and short-period stations with an interstation distance of 3-4 km. These stations were in operation for 22 months, from 06/2013 to 05/2015. The seismic array (TRANSCORBE) was deployed in a linear configuration of 170 km length in a NW-SE direction. The southern edge of the prolife is located near the Mediterranean coast in Mazarrón (Murcia) crossing the Alhama de Murcia fault and the Cazorla Mountain range in the north. The main goal of this project is to study the crustal and upper mantle structures under the Eastern Betics mountain ranges and their variations along the different geological domains. It probes, from southeast to northwest, the Alboran domain (metamorphic rocks), the External zones (sedimentary rocks) and the Variscan terrains of the Iberian Massif. The proposed scientific work includes the analysis of the data using mainly P and S receiver functions, and velocity and attenuation tomographic techniques. The study area has undergone a complex tectonic evolution where slow WNW-ESE oblique convergence of Iberian and African plates coexists with a rapid westward rollback of a subducting slab. The inter-station distance allows us obtaining high-resolution images of the crustal structure essential to understand the tectonic evolution of the area and how the deformation produced by these processes is distributed among the involved geologic domains. This experiment was the results of a joint effort between the Instituto Andaluz de Geofísica (IAG), Granada University, and GFZ Potsdam. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 9H and are embargoed until Jan 2021.

Description: The META-WT project was designed to perform a 4-weeks seismic experiment in Germany with a dense seismic array of ~400 three-component geophones that covered (1) a 2.5km x 2.5km wind farm area in Brandenburg, Germany, with almost 200 wind turbines (WTs) and a well-studied subsurface structure and (2) a 20-km long radial line from the center of the wind farm with one geophone every half-kilometer. The objective was to capture the spatio-temporal seismic wave-field signature of the wind farm from continuous recordings of ambient noise. Due to the dense interstation distance and proposed geometry the experiment allowed for analyzing both small-scale wave field characteristics at an unprecedented spatial resolution and the longer distance radiation pattern of the wind farm. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code XF, and is embargoed until Jan 2025.

Description: Sodankylä geophysical observatory (SGO) has operated in Sodankylä in northern Finland since 1913. SGO was originally founded by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. Now it takes care of national and international duties studying the space and geoenvironment as an independent research organisation in the University of Oulu. SGO performs long-term measurements, builds instruments, innovates and maintains domestic and international measurements, and performs research from these measurements. The seismic observations at SGO started in Sodankylä 1956. In 2005-2006 SGO seismic stations were updated to broadband instrumentation and connected to GEOFON data center. Today, the number of seismic stations has increased to 9. The stations have Streckeisen STS-2 or Nanometrics Trillium PA/PH broadband sensors. 3 of the stations are so called Posthole stations located in borehole 7-20 m below surface. The rest of the stations are located on the surface or in a more traditional type of vault. Data acquisition systems are either Earth Data PS6-24 digitisers and PC with Seiscomp or Nanometrics Centaurs. The continuous wave form data is collected at 100 Hz sampling frequency. The VH, LH and BH channel data is available from GEOFON data center and the 100Hz HH data from SGO by request. Further information about instrumentation can be found at the Institute’s web site (https://www.sgo.fi/). Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code FN, and arefully open.

Description: This data set contains measurements of an underground hydraulic fracture experiment at Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory in May and June 2015. The experiment tested various injection schemes for rock fracture stimulation and monitored the resulting seismicity. The primary purpose of the experiment is to identify injection schemes that provide rock fracturing while reducing seismicity or at least mitigate larger seismic events. In total, six tests with three different injection schemes were performed in various igneous rock types. Both the injection process and the accompanied seismicity were monitored. For injection monitoring, the water flow and pressure are provided and additional tests for rock permeability. The seismicity was monitored in both triggered and continuous mode during the tests by high-resolution acoustic emission sensors, accelerometers and broadband seismometers. Both waveform data and seismicity catalogs are provided.

    Description: Abstract
Description: Deployment of 10 seismometers for monitoring the induced seismicity of the Lacq gas field, France. This project focus on the analysis of the seismicity induced by anthropogenic activities (gas extraction and wastewater injection) related to the gas field, located in Lacq, France. We aim to answer the following questions: which part of the Lacq induced seismicity is generated by wastewater injection? by the mechanical evolution of the reservoir depletion? Is the seismicity confined to the (minor) faults of the reservoir or can regional tectonic faults be activated, generating large earthquakes? What scenarios of ground shaking and damages could be expected in case of a major event in the area? What is the associated seismic hazard and risk?

Description: We propose to investigate the structure and evolution of the Main Pamir Thrust (MPT) with a high-density seismological array. The MPT, with its surface expression along the east-west trending Alai Valley, marks the northern boundary of the Pamir. The Alai Valley, separating the Pamir and the Tien Shan, constitutes the last vestige of a formerly continuous basin that linked the Tarim and the Tajik Basins. The MPT manifests itself as a place of high seismic activity with frequently occurred disastrous earthquakes. The array is about 50 km long, consisted of 90 three-component geophones (stations G?? and C??) and 10 Trillium-Compact seismometers (stations T??), and equipped with 100 CUBE dataloggers. We will construct a high-resolution receiver function profile to image the MPT and accurately locate the local earthquakes associated with the MPT. Funded by BMBF, within the framework of CaTeNA project – Climatic and Tectonic Natural Hazards in Central Asia. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 7A and are embargoed until Jan 2024.

Description: Extensive passive seismic monitoring was carried out between September 2017 and September 2018 over the Los Humeros geothermal field in Mexico. This experiment, in addition to several geophysical, geological, and geochemical surveys was conducted in the framework of the European H2020 and Mexican CONACyT-SENER project GEMex for a better understanding of the structures and behavior of the local geothermal system currently under exploitation, and for investigating future development areas. 25 broadband stations (22 Trillium C-120s and 3 Trillium C-20 PH) recording at 200 Hz, and 20 short period stations (Mark L-4C-3D) recording at 100 Hz comprised the network which is sub-divided into two sub-networks. An inner and denser (~1.6-2 km inter-station distance) pseudo-rhomboidal array (27 stations) was laid out to cover the producing zone and retrieve local seismicity mainly associated to injection and production operations, and to comply with beamforming of ambient noise and time reverse imaging techniques. An outer and sparser (~5 km minimum spacing) array was placed at around 30 km radius surrounding the inner network, and was mainly dedicated to larger scale imaging techniques, such as seismic ambient noise tomography, and regional earthquakes tomography. The GEMex project is supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme for Research and Innovation under grant agreement No 727550 and the Mexican Energy Sustainability Fund CONACYT-SENER, project 2015-04-68074. Description: To seismically monitor the GEOREAL hydraulic stimulation experiment, that took place during the period 6-15 November 2023, a station network was set up in the vicinity of the Kontinentale Tiefbohrung/ KTB deep crustal lab near Windischeschenbach, Germany. The network comprised both surface stations, shallow borehole (25-150 m deep) stations as well as a borehole chain at 2000 m depth in the main borehole, ca. 200m apart from the pilot borehole. First stations were installed in early 2022 and removed in mid-2024. A total of 600 m³ of water was injected into the 4 km deep pilot borehole (KTB-VB, 12° 7.16' E, 49° 48.98' N, 513.418 m above NN ). This volume was injected through a stuck packer in the cased borehole into the open borehole section a depth of 3.85-4 km. No induced seismicity was observed during the injection experiment. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 4R, and is fully open.

Description: The Eifel Large-N Seismic Network is a concentric network of about 80km aperture around the Laacher See. Instrumentation consists of broad band seismometers, short period instruments (1Hz eigenfrequency) and 4.5Hz geophones. While the broadband and short period stations cover the area rather homogeneously for about 12 month, the geophone stations were moved after 6 month from a layout focussed on the closer vicinity of the Laacher See onto a line crossing the network from south-west to north-east with a dense station spacing. The goal of the experiment is the structural investigation of the feeding system of the East Eifel and a detailed study of the tectonic and volcanic seismic activity in this area. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 6E.

Description: Understanding the factors leading to large earthquakes in the coupling zone of convergent margins and their interrelation with surface deformation were the main aims of the international and interdisciplinary research initiative TIPTEQ (“From The Incoming Plate To megaThrust EarthQuake Processes”). Between Nov. 2004 and Oct. 2005 we deployed 2 temporary, amphibious seismic arrays in South-Central Chile. In this region the 1960 Mw = 9.5 earthquake nucleated. The northern network between 37° and 39°S was formed by up to 120 digitally recording land stations (equipped with short-period sensors) and 10 Ocean Bottom Seismometers/Hydrophones (OBS/OBH). Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code ZW, and are available under CC-BY 4.0 license according to GIPP-rules.

Description: Main aim of the project was to investigate the local seismicity (distribution and kinematics) within and around the Fergana basin and the Southern Tien Shan in Southern Kyrgistan. In order to achieve this goal a temporary local network was installed between 2009 and 2010. The results derived from this project contributed to decipher the relationship between geodynamics, neotectonic block structures and the occurrence of landslides in this region. Description: A network of 210 continuously running, digital seismic stations equipped with short-period sensors (200 stations) and broadband sensors (10 stations) was deployed in an area of ~8 x ~6 km in the Irish Midlands (north of Collinstown) for a time period of ~6 weeks. The network was part of the EU project VECTOR (https://vectorproject.eu) aiming to investigate – among others – possible solutions for least invasive forms of exploration for mineral resources. In this context the collected data was mainly used to derive a 3D model of the subsurface (seismic shear wave velocity) using ambient noise tomography (down to ~1.5km depth). We thank all field crews for their excellent work rendered to the project. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 7W, and is embargoed until Feb 2025.

    Description: Abstract
Description: 15 station seismological network spanning the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) toward the east of Ismetpasa to detect possible microseismicity and slow slip events in the creeping section of the NAFZ. The network consists of 10 three component 4.5 Hz geophone sensors in combination with DATACUBE3 recorders and five Trillium Horizon 120 broadband seismometers connected to Centaur data loggers. Geophone stations are buried at shallow depths while two of the broadband seismometers are installed in-house at basement level. The other three Trillium sensors are posthole installations in the field. The seismic network spans the same part of the NAFZ that is also monitored by a GNSS network installed by École Normale Supérieure (ENS) with two broadband seismometers being co-located with GNSS sensors. In addition, a set of creepmeters is installed close to Ismetpasa at the western end of the seismological network. The aim of the seismological study is twofold: a) Finding possible seismological expressions of the slow slip transients visible in the GNSS data and b) detecting microseismicity that is not listed in the regional Turkish earthquake catalogs based on seismological networks with much larger station spacing in the study area. The obtained results will hopefully give new insights into the seismological characteristics of a segment of a major continental transform fault capable of hosting M7 events but showing at the same time transient slow slip events and seismic creep.

    Description: Abstract
Description: A seismological experiment was started in July 2014 in and around the East Eifel Volcanic Field, Germany. Following two unusually deep micro-earthquakes in September 2013 (about 40 km depth) a seismic network was installed to record more local seismic events in order to better understand the seismicity and dynamics of this region. Ten recording stations of the GFZ GIPP (Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam at Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences) and three recording stations of the KIT KABBA (Karlsruhe BroadBand Array at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) were placed between the permanent stations of the state earthquake survey (Landeserdbebendienst). Altogether about 18-20 short-period and broadband stations could be used to study the seismicity up to August 2016. This dataset is unique concerning the station density in this region and allows determination of hypocenter parameters with high precision and accuracy, estimation of the local crustal and upper mantle structure as well as using array techniques for wavelengths of about 10-50 km. After August 2016 the network was reconfigured and continuously updated by KIT-GPI and LGB. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 1P, and is fully open.

Description: The Liquiñe-Ofqui fault system (LOFS) in south-central Chile provides a natural laboratory to assess the interplay between magma/hydrothermal fluid flow and crustal deformation. Understanding these processes is of paramount importance for geothermal energy exploration and seismic hazard assessment. We deployed a dense seismic network (Sielfeld et al., 2019) at the northern termination of the LOFS in south-central Chile (~38°S) between 2014 March and 2015 June. The main aim was to better understand the significance and implications of seismic activity in relation to geological information such as the complex fault-fracture network, volcanoes, and the stress field estimated from geological data. As a result, the network was designed to monitor the northern segment of the LOFS on a more regional scale rather than concentration on the activity of one volcano. The network covered a ~200‐km‐long section of the Southern Volcanic Zone, including several Holocene stratovolcanoes (Callaqui, Copahue, Caviahue Caldera, Tolhuaca, Lonquimay, Llaima, Sierra Nevada, Sollipulli, Villarrica, Quetrupillán, Lanín (La), and Mocho‐Choshuenco). Waveform data are open and available under network code 3H from the GEOFON data centre under license CC BY 4.0.

Description: Continuous passive seismic monitoring is carried out between September 2017 and December 2021 around the Theistareykir geothermal area located at the intersection between the active Northern Rift Zone and the active Tjörnes Fracture Zone in NE Iceland. This experiment, in addition to an extensive gravimetric monitoring survey, was conducted in the framework of the MicroGraviMoTiS project for a better understanding of the structures and behavior of the local geothermal system under exploitation and for further development of local and regional geothermal resources. 14 broadband stations (Trillium C-120s) recording at 200 Hz comprise the temporary network, that is installed to complement stations of the national seismological network of IMO and stations of Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company of Iceland. The stations were placed in and around the producing zone to primarily retrieve local natural and/or induced seismicity associated to the injection and production operations. The retrieved seismic data is also used for obtaining a representative 1D velocity model of the region, for computing a seismic ambient noise tomography, and for monitoring the system using coda wave interferometry techniques. Funding for this project is provided by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (MicroGraviMoTiS , BMBF, grant: 03G0858A), the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and Landsvirkjun. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data center, under network code 3P, and are embargoed until December 2025.

Description: Cliffs line many erosional coastlines. Localized failures can cause land loss and hazard, and impact ecosystems and sediment routing. Links between cliff erosion and forcing mechanisms are poorly constrained, due to limitations of classic approaches. Combining multi-seasonal seismic and drone surveys, wave, precipitation and groundwater data we study drivers and triggers of seismically detected failures along the chalk cliffs on Germany's largest island, Rügen. The network consists of four (later five) seismic stations along the 8.6 km long chalk cliff coast. Description: From June to August 2021 the DEEPEN project deployed a dense seismic network across the Hengill geothermal area in southwest Iceland to image and characterize faults and high-temperature zones at high resolution. The nodal network comprised 498 geophone nodes spread across the northern Nesjavellir and southern Hverahlíð geothermal fields and was complemented by an existing permanent and temporary backbone seismic network of a total of 44 short-period and broadband stations. In addition, two fiber optic telecommunication cables near the Nesjavellir geothermal power plant were interrogated with commercial DAS-interrogators. The here published dataset contains a subset of the downsampled DAS-recordings from the western fiber optic array. The original data were downsampled from 2000Hz to 250 Hz using the das-convert tool (https://doi.org/10.5880/GFZ.2.1.2021.005). Note that there was a problem with the GNSS timing in the original recorded data which caused significant temporal drift. This has mostly been corrected in the downsampled data, but some residual timing error may exist. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 1D, and is fully open.

This sensor was installed at two consecutive locations: BTD1 (28.635°N, 17.876389°W) recorded from 11-26 October 2021 and BTD2 (28.602365°N, 17.880475°W) recorded from 27 October 2021 until the end of the eruption. The volcanic tremor measurements were recorded at seismic station PLPI (28.5722°N, 17.8654°W), which was operated by the Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias. Here we provide the seismic tremor amplitudes within the Very Long Period (0.4-0.6 Hz) and the Long Period (1-5 Hz) frequency bands between 10 September and 20 December 2021. Thermal infrared videography of the explosive volcanic activity was done using an InfraTec HD thermal infrared (TIR) video camera. This camera was installed in El Paso (28.649361°N, 17.882279°W) and recorded almost continuously between 3-8 November 2021. Here we provide individual thermal infrared frames. Atmospheric conditions were obtained from weather balloon measurements at Güímar (station nr. 60018) on Tenerife, which were provided by the University of Wyoming, Department of Atmospheric Science (http://weather.uwyo.edu/). In addition, atmospheric data was collected from ground-based weather stations at El Paso and Roque de los Muchachos, which were operated by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) of Spain on La Palma. Information on the volcanic plume heights was obtained from both the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (https://vaac.meteo.fr/volcanoes/la-palma/) as well as the Plan de Emergencias Volcánicas de Canarias.

    Description: Abstract
Description: The ability to use geothermal resources to generate heat in urban areas where the demand is greatest has the potential to significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and to support sustainable energy policies. Potential deep geothermal resources in challenging, lower-enthalpy EU settings remain poorly understood and largely untapped. The GEO-URBAN project aims to explore the potential for low enthalpy geothermal in urban environments. The project will focus on two target locations – Dublin, Ireland and Vallès, Spain – and will provide a feasibility analysis for the commercial development of deep geothermal resources in these regions. The overall objective of GEO-URBAN is to identify the geothermal resources available in two challenging urban locations and to demonstrate a commercialisation strategy that has the potential to be adapted in other similar locations. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 1V, and is {fully open.
