    Description: Natural sites in urban spaces can have a key role in citizen well-being, providing fundamental ecosystem services to the population and assuring a multitude of benefits. Therefore, cities should guarantee a number of green areas and their conservation in time as an essential part of urban architecture. In this framework, cooperation between scientists, decision makers and citizens is critical to ensure the enhancement of green public spaces. Social and scientific communities are called to work in a tuned way to combine scientific knowledge and methods to local socio-economic contexts, driven by the values of geoethics. The Bullicante Lake case study, discussed in this work, represents an example of application of geoethical values, such as inclusiveness, sharing, sustainability and conservation of bio- and geodiversity. This urban lake in Rome appeared following illegal excavation works in 1992 and remained closed until 2016 favouring re-naturalization processes. Over time, this site was often threatened by pending actions for building. The aim of this study was to highlight how fruitful cooperation between science and citizens is able to transform a degraded urban area into a place of knowledge, recreation, enjoyment and eco-systemic preservation. Moreover, on the basis of this experience, the authors proposed a generalised approach/strategy to be developed and applied in other contexts. The active involvement of citizens and the cooperation among scientists, artists and institutions were able to redress opportunistic behaviours well by preventing site degradation and its improper use, favouring environmental safeguarding and making possible the site’s recognition as a natural monument. The results of these actions led to the improved quality of citizen life, showing an excellent example of virtuous cooperation between science and society.

    Description: QUESTO VOLUME RACCONTA UNA STORIA DI CAMBIAMENTI. Da un lato i cambiamenti del nostro pianeta, un ambiente vivo e in continua trasformazione; dall’altro, i cambiamenti nel modo di pensare, vedere e spiegare il mondo che, nell’arco di duemila anni, hanno guidato l’uomo nella comprensione dei meccanismi che regolano l’evoluzione della Terra. Il risultato di questo lungo percorso è la teoria della Tettonica delle Placche, una delle più importanti rivoluzioni scientifiche del XX secolo. La sua enunciazione ha coronato un’epoca d’oro per le Scienze della Terra. Accolta inizialmente con scetticismo, talvolta apertamente osteggiata, è stata accettata da un’intera generazione di scienziati che hanno fatto proprie le idee sulla deriva dei continenti, ponendo le basi per il cambiamento del modo di studiare e comprendere la dinamica della Terra: dalla visione di un pianeta statico, cristallizzato nelle sue forme, si è passati alla consapevolezza di vivere su un pianeta dinamico, continuamente rimodellato dalla tettonica globale. La teoria della Tettonica delle Placche è in grado, da sola, di spiegare fenomeni apparentemente inconciliabili: l’attività sismica, l’orogenesi, la disposizione dei vulcani, il magnetismo delle rocce, la formazione di strutture come le fosse oceaniche e gli archi vulcanici, la distribuzione e la forma dei continenti, il riaggiustamento isostatico postglaciale, la distribuzione geografica delle faune e flore fossili e la sorprendente struttura dei fondali oceanici. In questo volume percorriamo un lungo viaggio attraverso le intuizioni e le scoperte degli scienziati che, più di tutti, hanno contribuito alla formulazione della teoria della Tettonica delle Placche. I geografi del XVI secolo avevano notato, per primi, la somiglianza tra i margini dei continenti che si affacciano sull’Oceano Atlantico; nei secoli successivi sono state formulate molte ipotesi per spiegare queste caratteristiche della superficie e comprendere come siano correlate con la struttura interna della Terra, fino ad arrivare all’ipotesi sulla deriva dei continenti di Alfred Wegener. All’inizio del XX secolo erano già stati raccolti tutti gli elementi per una prima formalizzazione della teoria. Ma saranno la seconda guerra mondiale, prima, e la guerra fredda, dopo, a fornire l’opportunità per studiare in modo approfondito i fondali oceanici e per realizzare le prime reti sismiche globali. I nuovi dati raccolti forniranno le evidenze più schiaccianti a sostegno della Tettonica delle Placche. Con l’avvento del nuovo millennio, l’attenzione di molti scienziati si è rivolta allo studio dei pianeti extraterrestri in cerca dei segni di attività tettonica. Oggi sappiamo infatti che ha avuto un ruolo fondamentale nella comparsa della vita sulla Terra: l’individuazione di questi segni sarà centrale per la ricerca di mondi alieni che possano aver ospitato, o potranno ospitare, la vita.

    Description: This book outlines the current development of geoethical thinking, proposing to the general public reflections and categories useful for understanding the ethical, cultural, and societal dimensions of anthropogenic global changes. Geoethics identifies and orients responsible behaviors and actions in the management of natural processes, redefining the human interaction with the Earth system based on a critical, scientifically grounded, and pragmatic approach. Solid scientific knowledge and a philosophical reference framework are crucial to face the current ecological disruption. The scientific perspective must be structured to help different human contexts while respecting social and cultural diversity. It is impossible to respond to global problems with disconnected local actions, which cannot be proposed as standard and effective operational models. Geoethics tries to overcome this fragmentation, presenting Earth sciences as the foundation of responsible human action toward the planet. Geoethics is conceived as a rational and multidisciplinary language that can bind and concretely support the international community, engaged in resolving global environmental imbalances and complex challenges, which have no national, cultural, or religious boundaries that require shared governance. Geoethics is proposed as a new reading key to rethinking the Earth as a system of complex relationships, in which the human being is an integral part of natural interactions.

    Description: Novel measurement technologies, additional sensors and increasing data processing capacities offer new opportunities to answer some of the currently most pressing societal and environmental questions. They also contribute to the fact that the available data volume will continue to increase. At the same time, the requirements for those providing such data rise and the needs of users to access it. The EPOS Delivery Framework aims to support this endeavour in the solid Earth domain by providing access to data, products, and services supporting multidisciplinary analyses for a wide range of users. Based on this example, we look at the most pressing issues from when data, products, and services are made accessible, to access principles, ethical issues related to its collection and use as well as with respect to their promotion. Among many peculiarities, we shed light on a common component that affects all fields equally: change. Not only will the amount and type of data, products, and services change, but so will the societal expectations and providers capabilities.

    Description: Geoethics was developed as a reflection on the meaning of geosciences and the roles and values of reference of the geoscientific community. More recently, the perimeter of geoethical analysis has expanded to include the global issues of modern societies, above all anthropogenic environmental changes, which are redefining the prospects and expectations of human life on the planet. The current definition of Geoethics describes both its philosophical dimension and aspects related to its practical application in the scientific and social fields. Its formulation has numerous implications and aims to provide reference points for a novel way of intending and relating to the planet. This chapter intends to present the fundamental characteristics, objectives, and general vision of Geoethics, framing it in a synthetic way within some currents of contemporary thoughts.

    The International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) | India

    Description: Yemaya No. 63, dated May 2021, features articles from US, The Netherlands, Myanmar, Senegal, and an article on women in fisheries and human rights. The article from the US by Linda Behnken argues that a growing coalition of small-scale, community-based fishers is calling for the recognition and protection of Alaska’s invaluable coastal fisheries during COVID-19. The article from the Netherlands by Cornelie Quist looks at the challenges facing women engaged in small-scale fishing and supplying fish through retailers and how they found new ways to directly reach consumers. The conversation between Miranda Bout and Cornelie Quist focuses on how they combined new product development with the use of social media to contact their customer base during the pandemic-induced disruption of traditional marketing chains. The article by Elena Finkbeiner, Juno Fitzpatrick and Whitney Yadao-Evans looks at recent media revelations and scientific research that have brought increased attention to human-rights violations and the myriad social issues facing fisheries, but with a disproportionate focus on labour-rights violations at sea and in industrial fishing operations. The systemic inequalities combined with the effects of COVID-19 exacerbated vulnerabilities of women to health risks, food and livelihood security. The article from Senegal by Aby Dia from Lumière Synergie pour le Développement (LSD), in collaboration with WoMin African Alliance, South Africa, narrates the story of traditional women fish processors from the Bargny who have been, for more than a decade, struggling against development projects that jeopardise their environment, health and livelihoods. In order to preserve their livelihoods, women processors in Senegal have come together to oppose the Tosyali steel project. The European Network of Women in Fisheries and Aquaculture in Europe (AKTEA) urges the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries to integrate gender into all aspects of European fishing policy. The Profile column looks at how Linda Behnken became a fisher in Alaska and how fishing has shaped her individuality and work. Natalie Sattler says that fishing for halibut, sablefish and salmon from the sparkling waters of the Pacific along with her children and at the same time passion for working with the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association and the Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust is an immense challenge.

    Description: La possibilità di u􏰨lizzare la geo­mitologia a fini educa􏰨vi e di comunicazione era stata sondata in uno studio pubblicato nel 2007 [Lanza & Negrete, 2007], seguendo le orme di Dorothy Vitaliano, una geologa americana che in un libro, Legends of the Earth: their geologic origins [Vitaliano, 1973], sinte􏰨zzava alcune ricerche geologiche effe􏰣uate anche studiando la mitologia locale. Vitaliano coniava il termine geo­mitologia sostenendo che era stato concepito come l’applicazione in geologia del termine “Evemerismo”, dal filosofo siciliano Evemero da Messina (300 a.C­ 250 a.C..) il quale sosteneva che le divinità mitologiche non erano altro che divinità mortali. Dunque la geo­mitologia si basa sull’idea che alcuni mi􏰨 e alcune leggende possano essere spiegate come even􏰨 geologici che si sono verifica􏰨 e sono sta􏰨 osserva􏰨 da differen􏰨 gruppi di persone. Seguendo queste indicazioni abbiamo u􏰨lizzato i mi􏰨 in differen􏰨 contes􏰨, come ad esempio nelle scuole primarie u􏰨lizzando il teatro scien􏰨fico [Lanza et al., 2014]; oppure nelle scuole secondarie in percorsi eco­museali [Lanza 2014]. Un recente proge􏰣o di Alternanza Scuola Lavoro, svoltosi nell’arco di un biennio, nell’anno scolas􏰨co 2016­2017 (in seguito indicata ASL 2017), e nell’anno scolas􏰨co 2017­2018 (in seguito indicata ASL 2018) presso il Liceo Classico Ugo Foscolo di Albano, ci ha dato l’occasione di u􏰨lizzare i geo­mi􏰨 in una nuova modalità perme􏰣endo agli studen􏰨 di compiere i primi passi nella scri􏰣ura crea􏰨va per fini di educazione ambientale dei più piccoli. Lo scopo primario del proge􏰣o è stato quello di introdurre i ragazzi alla conoscenza del territorio in cui vivono e di sensibilizzarli alle problema􏰨che ambientali che lo cara􏰣erizzano. L’individuazione di mi􏰨 lega􏰨 al territorio in un’area ricca di vegetazione, modellata da una intensa a􏰢vità vulcanica per cen􏰨naia di migliaia di anni e sogge􏰣a a frequente anche se moderata a􏰢vità sismica, quale è quella dei Castelli Romani, ha permesso ai ragazzi di esplorare il territorio a 360 gradi. I ragazzi hanno in seguito scelto un mito da trasformare in favola per bambini. Infine, si sono confronta􏰨 con i bambini delle scuole primarie nel corso di even􏰨 di apertura al pubblico, organizza􏰨 sia presso la sede INGV di Roma sia presso il Museo Geofisico di Rocca di Papa. Con i proge􏰢 di ASL abbiamo dunque lavorato con studen􏰨 della scuola secondaria, ma indire􏰣amente anche con quelli della scuola primaria. Basandoci, infa􏰢, su uno dei principi su cui si basa l’ASL, ovvero fare in modo che gli studen􏰨 oltre alla formazione acquisiscano competenze che li possano avvicinare al mondo del lavoro (D.L.77/2005), abbiamo voluto in qualche modo coinvolgerli nella ricerca di un metodo per suscitare nei più piccoli l’interesse per il nostro pianeta. Prima di iniziare questa esperienza di ASL, era nelle nostre intenzioni introdurre i più piccoli (ovvero gli studen􏰨 delle scuole primarie) alla scri􏰣ura crea􏰨va per il pianeta. Nel corso della esperienza di ASL, questa intenzione è mutata verso l’introduzione alla scri􏰣ura crea􏰨va degli studen􏰨 di scuola secondaria e eventualmente in futuro anche di quelli di scuola primaria. Un primo approccio alla scri􏰣ura crea􏰨va è infa􏰢 nato spontaneamente nel corso dell’ASL 2018, come descriveremo qui di seguito. Sebbene il numero degli studen􏰨 che hanno partecipato al proge􏰣o sia esiguo, siamo in grado di fare alcune importan􏰨 considerazioni sull’u􏰨lizzo di metodologie alterna􏰨ve che coinvolgano altre discipline nell’educazione alle scienze della Terra. Il proge􏰣o ci ha anche permesso di accostarci alle problema􏰨che che cara􏰣erizzano i percorsi curriculari degli studen􏰨 delle scuole di secondo grado. Il presente ar􏰨colo offre una breve sintesi del lavoro svolto.

    Description: Gli esseri umani vivono in una società globalizzata, smaterializzata nella sua spazialità e temporalità, tecnologizzata, sempre più omogeneizzata nelle forme culturali e nelle strutture economiche, con accresciute disuguaglianze nel riconoscimento dei diritti umani e nelle possibilità di autodeterminazione e di accesso alle risorse naturali. La pandemia da SARS-CoV-2 ha evidenziato criticità e potenzialità della società globalizzata. I cambiamenti ambientali antropogenici, che modificano le caratteristiche fisico-chimico-biologiche del sistema Terra, costituiscono una minaccia analoga se non più grave per l'abitabilità del pianeta da parte dell'umanità e di molte altre specie viventi. Affrontare urgentemente tali cambiamenti richiede una forte cooperazione internazionale tra gli Stati. Allo stesso tempo è necessario che le comunità umane condividano principi e valori su cui fondare nuove forme di relazione tra esseri umani e natura. In tale prospettiva, la geoetica si propone come etica globale di un mondo complesso, fondata sui principi di dignità, libertà e responsabilità. Human beings live in a globalized society, dematerialized in its spatiality and temporality, technologized, increasingly homogenized in cultural forms and economic structures, with increased inequalities in the recognition of human rights and in the possibilities of self-determination and access to natural resources. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has highlighted the criticality and potential of the globalized society. Anthropogenic environmental changes, which modify the physical-chemical-biological characteristics of the Earth system, pose a similar if not more serious threat to the habitability of the planet by humanity and many other living species. Addressing such changes urgently requires strong international cooperation among States. At the same time, it needs that human communities share principles and values on which to base new forms of relationship between human beings and nature. In this perspective, geoethics is proposed as global ethics for a complex world, founded on the principles of dignity, freedom and responsibility.

    Description: Immersive virtual reality can potentially open up interesting geological sites to students, academics and others who may not have had the opportunity to visit such sites previously. We study how users perceive the usefulness of an immersive virtual reality approach applied to Earth Sciences teaching and communication. During nine immersive virtual reality-based events held in 2018 and 2019 in various locations (Vienna in Austria, Milan and Catania in Italy, Santorini in Greece), a large number of visitors had the opportunity to navigate, in immersive mode, across geological landscapes reconstructed by cutting-edge, unmanned aerial system-based photogrammetry techniques. The reconstructed virtual geological environments are specifically chosen virtual geosites, from Santorini (Greece), the North Volcanic Zone (Iceland), and Mt. Etna (Italy). Following the user experiences, we collected 459 questionnaires, with a large spread in participant age and cultural background. We find that the majority of respondents would be willing to repeat the immersive virtual reality experience, and importantly, most of the students and Earth Science academics who took part in the navigation confirmed the usefulness of this approach for geo-education purposes.

    Description: Probably the founding father of Geology, Sir James Hutton was raised as a doctor but his passions for the nature surrounding his farm led him to rocks, then specimens, then fossils. The result was what we might call a comparative physician – the first paleontologist, in fact. His upbringing in medicine had given him the classical knowledge of his time, from Latin to mathematics, and from biology to drawing. Not only did the lack of a specific scientific discipline bring Sir Hutton to devise a novel field of study of his own – it also molded strands of his formal learning into a synthesis of intellectual tools. These days, hyper specialization has brought upon novel discoveries of paramount importance and marvel, from graphene to vaccines. It also is a means of necessity in applying for academic positions and to publish in ever nascent journals. This architecture, however, reflects a system of parallel disciplinarity, with scientific fields somehow on their own course. On the other hand, complexities at stake require solutions that may well evade any given single field, at times astray from usual avenues. Such approach not only entails multi-disciplinarity (diverse teams – yesterday), but it also requires cross-disciplinarity (across specific disciplines – today) and, especially, trans-disciplinarity (beyond firm disciplines – today and tomorrow). For their very nature, geosciences are bound to glean lessons learned from the past to provide insight into the future. Geoscientists were once thought to study ancient rocks, fiddle with very slow-moving tectonic plates, and bantering about invisible earth’s features, too large, or too deep, or too far away to even imagine for us earthlings. But the geosciences are more than ever side by side with some of the most pressing issues surrounding contemporary societies – after having been at the heart of a couple of global energy revolutions. From a series of examples, this work thus tries to put into perspective: Hazards stemming from multiple, at times unpredictable sources; The precious role of geosciences to decipher them – and to forecast them; The complexity of natural hazards, the (need of) flexibility in human planning; Modern issues challenging societies and economies – today, tomorrow, and thereafter.

    Description: This is the second volume focused on geoethics published by the Geological Society of London. This is a significant step forward in which authors address the maturation of geoethics. The field of geoethics is now ready to be introduced outside the geoscience community as a logical platform for global ethics that addresses anthropogenic changes. Geoethics has a distinction in the geoscientific community for discussing ethical, social and cultural implications of geoscience knowledge, research, practice, education and communication. This provides a common ground for confronting ideas, experiences and proposals on how geosciences can supply additional service to society in order to improve the way humans interact responsibly with the Earth system. This book provides new messages to geoscientists, social scientists, intellectuals, law- and decision-makers, and laypeople. Motivations and actions for facing global anthropogenic changes and their intense impacts on the planet need to be governed by an ethical framework capable of merging a solid conceptual structure with pragmatic approaches based on geoscientific knowledge. This philosophy defines geoethics.

    Description: In the last decade, bottom-up strategies of risk education have raised importance, making seriousgames to become an alternative or complementary teaching tool for enhancing skills for acollaborative and adaptive response to social-ecological challenges. This study describes issues and challenges of serious games implemented within the framework oftwo European projects, namely UPStrat-MAFA (Urban Disaster Prevention Strategies usingMacroseismic Fields and FAult sources) and KnowRISK (Know your city, Reduce seISmic risKthrough non-structural elements); the goal is to instil in young people a proactive attitude towardsthe mitigation of seismic risk. The games were tested in some dissemination events focussed on fostering seismic riskpreparedness in students and improving good practices. We discuss the performance of our gameseven against more standard approaches to risk education. Our experience shows a rise of students’engagement compared to standard learning activities. The games were effective as students wereable to grasp the most relevant actions to reduce risk

The first and unexpected lockdown in Italy has seriously upset people daily routine, working organisation, socialisation and interactions with colleagues and relatives. To overcome the physical isolation and collect impressions, the “How are you?” online questionnaire was created and shared as a conversation among friends. Text mining techniques have been applied to almost one hundred replies, to highlight similarities and differences in the experiences lived during the lockdown, changes in daily actions, thoughts and reflections.

    Description: Innovations in virtual reality (VR) technology have led to exciting possibilities in teaching earth sciences, allowing students to experience complex geological sites that, due to cost and logistical reasons, they would not normally be able to experience. The need for high quality online digital learning resources and blended learning was brought to the forefront during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, as courses with a traditional physical field work component were forced to move online and provide alternatives to students. While it is unlikely that virtual field trips (VFT) would be accepted by students as a replacement of real-world fieldwork moving out of the pandemic, research shows promise that using IVR experiences can lead to enhanced learning outcomes in geosciences, warranting its inclusion on the curricula. This paper presents the outputs of a project to improve student learning in complex geological environments using VR. Here we outline a workflow that was developed to collect high resolution imagery using remote sensing to create digital outcrop models (DOM) of complex geological sites. Using this framework, this paper will then explore the use of VR for an investigation of the Husavik Triple Junction, a complex structural site in northern Iceland, explaining how the drone data was converted to a 3D DOM and demonstrating how VR can be used to simulate real world field mapping. Finally, we describe how these IVR activities have been integrated into taught modules at postgraduate level and discuss how the use of IVR experiences can complement existing geoscience curriculum design.

    Description: The impact of volcanic activity may have substantial economic implications, affecting societal aspects at varying degree. For example, tourism can benefit from excursions in volcanic regions with mild activity (e.g., Strombolian explosions); on the other hand, air traffic can be easily disrupted by ash emission even without climactic eruptions (e.g., during a lava fountain). To minimize exposure to volcanic hazard, volcano observatories worldwide offer multimedia information also able to convey fast communication on on-going eruptive events; these digital resources have been changing the actual relationships between scientists and citizens: i) creating a two-way communication that can significantly enhance awareness and preparedness, and ii) limiting the effect of fake news. Scientists disseminate scientifically validated information, while citizens can contribute by using new tools (custom APPs, web forms) generating a huge amount of data. In this scenario, the contribution of tools based on Augmented and Virtual Reality can simplify and enrich the process of collection of information, which is especially – but not exclusively – enjoyed by the Native Digital generation. New communication strategies have been developed, and are one of the main topics of the 3DTeLC project (Bringing the 3D-world into the classroom: a new approach to Teaching, Learning and Communicating the science of geohazards in terrestrial and marine environments; Project Reference: 2017-1-UK01-KA203- 036719). In the framework of the 3DTeLC project, we present examples of custom developed tools, promoting the exploitation of these new techniques for so-called “citizen science”, with a particular focus on volcanic hazard communication concerning Mt. Etna (Italy).

    Description: How to improve understanding of natural hazards is a major challenge for the research community. The multiple aspects of the hazard, from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions, landslides and coastal erosion, require new methods not only for data acquisition, but also for data processing and consequent management. In this respect, emergent tools, such as augmented and virtual reality, offer great versatility and effectiveness. Also, gaining insight into natural hazards with these tools can help communication to the general public as well as teaching to the digital native generation, particularly accustomed to these techniques for playing video games. In this presentation we describe our outreach activity by using augmented reality to help understand hazardous events, increasing preparedness and resilience.

    Description: Field-based classes in geological sciences are crucial components of geoscience education and research. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, such activities became problematic due to limitations such as travel restrictions and lockdown periods: this motivated the geoeducational community to tailor new ways to engage people in field activities. As a result, we adopted Immersive Virtual Reality as a tool to involve students, academics, and the lay public in field exploration, thus making geological exploration accessible also to people affected by permanent or temporary motor disabilities. In particular, we evaluated how users perceive the usefulness of this approach as applied to Earth Science learning and teaching, through nine outreach events, where a total of 459 participants were involved, with different ages and cultural backgrounds. The participants explored, in an immersive mode, four geological landscapes, defined as virtual geological environments, which have been reconstructed by cutting-edge, unmanned aerial system-based photogrammetry techniques. They include: Santorini (Greece), the North Volcanic Zone (Iceland), and Mt. Etna (Italy). After the exploration, each participant filled in an anonymous questionnaire. The results show that the majority would be willing to repeat the experience, and, most importantly, the majority of the students and Earth Science academics who took part in the navigation confirmed the usefulness of this technique for geo-education purposes. Our approach can be considered as a groundbreaking tool and an innovative democratic way to access information and experiences, as well as to promote inclusivity and accessibility in geo-education, while reducing travel costs, saving time, and decreasing the carbon footprint.     Description: L’eruzione etnea del 1669 ebbe un’eco mediatica che si diffuse in Italia ed Europa con gran rapidità, per i mezzi del tempo, diffondendosi a tutti i livelli della società. A veicolare così efficacemente la fama dell’eruzione furono in primis le relazioni giornalistiche coeve. Un censimento sistematico ha identificato 26 edizioni, pubblicate tra la seconda metà di marzo 1669 e i primi mesi del 1670 a Roma, Ronciglione, Napoli, Rimini, Bologna, Catania, Messina, Livorno, Lisbona, Parigi, Londra, Edinburgo, Dublino e Cambridge (Massachusetts) e oggi conservate in Italia e all'estero, spesso in esemplari unici al mondo. La fama dell’eruzione si diffuse tanto e tanto velocemente grazie a una circostanza fortuita: la concomitanza dell'eruzione con il viaggio di un diplomatico inglese che faceva ritorno in patria dalla Turchia. Lord Winchilsea, si fermò brevemente a Catania per ammirare da lontano lo spettacolo dell'eruzione e si fece promotore della pubblicazione di un opuscolo stampato a Londra nell'agosto 1669. La "True and exact relation" dell'eruzione etnea era destinata a suscitare nei paesi di lingua inglese un interesse senza precedenti per l'Etna in particolare e per i vulcani in generale. Forse la più durevole eredità culturale dell’eruzione del 1669 è l’aver posto le premesse per lo sviluppo della plurisecolare fascinazione britannica per la vulcanologia e per l’Etna.

    Description: Gender equality is far from being reached in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Women in Earth Sciences still remain underrepresented although positive trends are recognized in the last decades. Dealing with gender inequalities in academia, however, is only part of the problem. As well as Earth Sciences need more women in leadership positions and decision-making committees, and more girls educated in the field, alike there are well-founded reasons for scientists to put attention to gender in a broader sense. According to United Nations, inadequate attention has been given how gender inequality drives disaster risks and impacts. The present contribution aims to broaden the gender perspective from improving underrepresentation in the workplace and breaking down barriers in research careers, to including gender in research content in an extensive sense. A paradigm shift is proposed from women in science to women in society, coping with gender-responsive disaster risk reduction and multiple gender dimensions in Earth Sciences. Counterbalancing present inequalities in the workplace, as well as applying a gender lens in all hazard-related activities is needed to cope with complex social systems in earthquake-prone areas. An intersectional approach and transdisciplinary research are needed.

Questo potrebbe anche essere un manuale di sopravvivenza per quei dottorandi il cui “docente guida” non abbia compreso bene il proprio ruolo. Qui si faranno osservazioni e riflessioni che, in quanto tali, potranno anche non essere condivisibili. Ma sarà una critica senza finalità di condanna. Semmai di redenzione.     Description: Las pesquerías basadas en las agregaciones reproductivas pueden amenazar a especies como los pargos que tienen conductas gregarias durante el período reproductivo. Esta nota ofrece elementos que sugieren la existencia de sitios de agregación no registrados previamente y no protegidos en el Parque Nacional Cayos de San Felipe (PNCSF), región suroccidental de Cuba. La información tradicional obtenida de pescadores locales y trabajadores del parque se corroboró con muestreos cualitativos y cuantitativos de peces de arrecifes y datos de pesquerías locales del 2014. En la época de reproducción de pargos (mayo a julio) se observaron grupos de entre 40-100 ejemplares de Lutjanus cyanopterus, Lutjanus synagris y Lutjanus jocu en los arrecifes de la zona occidental del PNCSF (camellones entre 15-30 m de profundidad cerca del borde de la plataforma). Dentro de esa área, se señalan dos sitios que parecen ser utilizados para agregaciones de predesove, por lo que requieren protección y ser estudiados. Los censos cuantitativos confirmaron que en mayo y junio la zona occidental tiene densidad alta de pargos adultos. También, el pico de captura de estas especies ocurrió en la época reproductiva. Se comprobó que las pesquerías se realizaron durante las migraciones de peces hacia el borde de la plataforma en áreas de la zona occidental del PNCSF, y que más del 60% de los individuos tuvieron gónadas maduras (antes de desovar). Esta información debe incentivar el estudio de las agregaciones de desove en esta región de Cuba, la protección de especies amenazadas y áreas de alta significación ecológica y la implementación de pesquerías sostenibles.
    Description: Fisheries based on reproductive aggregations can threaten species such as snappers that have gregarious behavior during the reproductive period. This note provides evidence to support the existence of aggregation sites, not previously registered and unprotected, in the National Park San Felipe Keys (NPSFK), southwestern region of Cuba. Traditionalinformation obtained from local fishermen and from the park staff was complemented with qualitative and quantitative fish reef censuses and local fisheries data in 2014. In the reproductive season of snappers (May to July) groups of between 40-100 specimens of Lutjanus cyanopterus, Lutja- nus synagris and Lutjanus jocu were observed in the western area of the NPSFK on the reefs (spoor and grove between 20-30 m deep close to the platform edge). Within that area two sites are indicated that can be used for prespawning aggregation, so they require protection and study. Quanti- tative censuses confirmed that in May and June the western zone has high density of adult snappers. Also, the peak of capture of these snapper species occurred in the reproduc- tive season. It was found that fisheries carried out during fish migrations to the edge of the shelf in areas of the western area of the NPSFK and more than 60% of the individuals had mature gonads (before spawning). This information should promote the study of spawning aggregations in this region of Cuba, the protection of threatened species and areas of high ecological significance and the implementation of sustainable fisheries.

    Description: The ICES Workshop on ICES reference points (WKREF2) was tasked review the WKREF1 report and based on the outcome develop updated guidelines for the ICES reference points system and recommendations for ACOM consideration. The WKREF1 report has suggested 5 key recom- mendations to simplify and harmonise the ICES reference points framework representing a ma- jor change to the current guidelines. At WKREF2, we detailed discussions and four key concerns were raised about the proposed approach. The first related to the simplification of rules to define Blim. Around two thirds of category 1 stocks would end up as WKREF1 “Blim Type 2” where Blim would be set as a fraction of B0. The Allee effect or “depensation” maybe more important than previously thought and should be furthered explored for ICES stocks since it has important consequences for Blim. A number of challenges and issues around defining Blim using the current guidelines were documented. Some suggestions on improvement criteria were discussed including using classifiers to define spas- modic stocks and using change point algorithms to address non-stationary productivity regimes. However, further work is need to make these approaches operational and there was no consen- sus that the WKREF1 Blim types should replace the current guidelines. WKREF1 recommended that the FMSY proxy should be based on a biological proxies and should be less than the deterministic FMSY. It was pointed out that the stochastic FMSY estimated in EqSim for example, is lower than the deterministic FMSY and that the current guidelines ensure that the FMSY should not pose a more than 5% risk to Blim. A large amount of work described in WD 1 was carried out to develop an MSE framework to consistency and robustness test a candidate refer- ence point system for North East Atlantic stocks. However, WKREF2 recommended that further work needs to be carried out to condition and test the simulation framework before the conclu- sions could be adopted by ICES and incorporated into the guidelines. A number of considerations for defining MSY related reference points were discussed including using model validation and prediction skill to ensure that ICES provide robust and credible ad- vice. There is evidence that density dependence (DD) is important in the majority of ICES stocks (68% in recruitment and 54% in growth). The correct prediction of the shape and strength of density-dependence in productivity is key to predicting future stock development and providing the best possible long-term fisheries management advice. A suggested approach to use surplus production models (SPMs) to account for DD in FMSY was suggested and discussed but there was no consensus on whether that approach was appropriate. There was consensus that the FECO approach as a means of adapting target fishing mortality to medium-term changes in productiv- ity should be included in the guidelines subject to a benchmark and ACOM approval. While WKREF1 and 2 focused mainly on Category 1 stocks ToR c) called for a “simplified and harmonised set of guidelines for estimating MSY and precautionary reference points applicable in the advice framework across various ICES stock categories.” Ideally the ICES assessment cat- egories should provide equivalent risk across all stocks. This issue was discussed but no recom- mendations emerged. There was no consensus a revised reference point framework was proposed at WKREF2. How- ever, it was agreed that it should be presented here for further discussion at ACOM and other fora. The key feature of the suggested approach is that the stock status evaluation is treated in- dependent of the Advice Rule (AR). The main feature of the system is that the biomass trigger is not linked to a stock status evaluation, it is linked to the expected biomass when fishing at the target fishing mortality, in contrast to the current ICES approach. It also entailed that FMSY would also become an upper limit of fishing mortality and that the advised fishing mortality would be set at or lower than that level. WKREF2 did not discuss what to do in situations where SSB〈 Blim or alternative forms of HCR for the advice rule. Building community understanding and con- sensus around simplified and harmonised guidelines has yet to be achieved. A further workshop WKREF3 will be required to achieve that aim. The report includes 6 recommendations for ACOM consideration.

    Description: The main objective of the workshop was to review the recommendations of WKREF1 and con- sider how these might feed into a new reference points framework and guidelines for ICES. There were a number of presentations on the wider issues of best practice for reference points, the Allee effect, density dependence and the WKIRISH approach. The starting point was to try and develop a set of simplified and harmonised guidelines based on the WKREF1 report rather than evolving the current guidelines to include the WKREF1 conclusions. A key aspect of the meeting was to allow for discussions in order to build a shared understanding of the strengths and weakness of the current framework and of the new framework emerging from WKREF1.

    Description: The ocean's mesopelagic zone (200–1000 m) remains one of the most understudied parts of the ocean despite knowledge that mesopelagic fishes are highly abundant. Apex predators from the surface waters are known to consume these fishes, constituting an important ecological interaction. Some countries have begun exploring the potential harvest of mesopelagic fishes to supply fishmeal and fish oil markets due to the high fish abundance in the mesopelagic zone compared with overfished surface waters. This study explored the economic and ecological implications of a moratorium on the harvest of mesopelagic fishes such as lanternfish off the US West Coast, one of the few areas where such resources are managed. We adapted a bioeconomic decision model to examine the tradeoffs between the values gained from a hypothetical mesopelagic fishery with the potential values lost from declines in predators of mesopelagic fishes facing a reduced prey resource. The economic rationale for a moratorium on harvesting mesopelagics was sensitive both to ecological relationships and the scale of the nonmarket values attributed to noncommercial predators. Using a California Current-based ecological simulation model, we found that most modeled predators of mesopelagic fishes increased in biomass even under high mesopelagic harvest rates, but the changes (either increases or decreases) were small, with relatively few predators responding with more than a 10% change in their biomass. While the ecological simulations implied that a commercial mesopelagic fishery might not have large biomass impacts for many species in the California Current system, there is still a need to further explore the various roles of the mesopelagic zone in the ocean.

    Description: Canada has undertaken commitments to recognize the rights of Indigenous Peoples in fisheries through policies and agreements, including Integrated Fishery Management Plans, the Reconciliation Strategy, and Land Claim Agreements (LCAs). In addition to recognizing rights, these commitments were intended to respect geographic adjacency principles, to enhance the economic viability of Indigenous communities, and to be reflective of community dependence on marine resources. We examined the determinants of quota allocations in commercial fisheries involving Nunatsiavut, Northern Labrador, the first self-governing region for the Inuit peoples in Canada. It has been argued that current fishery allocations for Nunatsiavut Inuit have not satisfied federal commitments to recognize Indigenous rights. Indicators that measure equity in commercial allocations for the turbot or Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) and northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) fisheries were identified and assessed. In these two cases, historical allocations continue to predominate for allocations based upon equity or other social or economic considerations. We illustrate equity-enhancing changes in the quota distribution under scenarios of different levels of inequality aversion, and we make qualitative assessments of the effects of these allocations to Nunatsiavut for socioeconomic welfare. This approach could benefit fisheries governance in Northern Labrador, where federal commitments to equity objectives continue to be endorsed but have not yet been integrated fully into quota allocations.

    Description: The ocean twilight zone (more formally known as the mesopelagic zone) plays a fundamental role in global climate. It is the mid-ocean region roughly 100 to 1000 meters below the surface, encompassing a half-mile deep belt of water that spans more than two-thirds of our planet. The top of the ocean twilight zone only receives 1% of incident sunlight and the bottom level is void of sunlight. Life in the ocean twilight zone helps to transport billions of metric tons (gigatonnes) of carbon annually from the upper ocean into the deep sea, due in part to processes known as the biological carbon pump. Once carbon moves below roughly 1000 meters depth in the ocean, it can remain out of the atmosphere for centuries to millennia. Without the benefits of the biological carbon pump, the atmospheric CO 2 concentration would increase by approximately 200 ppm 1 which would significantly amplify the negative effects of climate change that the world is currently trying to curtail and reverse. Unfortunately, existing scientific knowledge about this vast zone of the ocean, such as how chemical elements flow through its living systems and the physical environment, is extremely limited, jeopardizing the efforts to improve climate predictions and to inform fisheries management and ocean policy development.

    Description: Geoheritage and geodiversity visually and symbolically express the link between the physical and biological environment and cultural world. In the geoethical vision, their protection is fundamental, since they are irreplaceable components of a non-renewable social and natural ‘capital’. They become points of reference to redefine the intimate connection between human beings and Earth, thus assuming a value meaning to be placed at the basis of a new way of experiencing the territory. Initiatives such as geoparks or geotourism represent their concrete implementation, as activities capable of enhancing the environment and its geological landscape. Furthermore, their learning and enjoyment also foster a broader understanding of the significance of geosciences and their importance for the functioning of societies, as well as promoting interactions with local human communities, and the expansion of one’s spiritual and aesthetical dimension while living the interaction with nature. Responsible geotourism enhances sites and landscapes of geological significance, assuring their protection and the sustainable development of surrounding areas. Moreover, the use of those sites by citizens can increase their awareness and understanding of key issues to be faced by society, such as the sustainable use of geo-resources, the mitigation of and adaptation to climate change effects, and the reduction of risks related to natural and anthropogenic phenomena. Geotourism, therefore, also represents the common ground on which geosciences and social sciences can interact, offering undoubted advantages. It makes multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary work and cross-boundaries national and international collaboration visual and tangible; it produces an increase in public awareness and scientific knowledge; it improves the quality of life of the local population by creating incentives for economic development; finally, it drives society to behave and act more responsibly towards geodiversity and biodiversity. This chapter frames geotourism within geoethical thought, emphasising its formative contribution for the human being.

    Description: This text is an introduction to the problem of low frequency electromagnetic monitoring, with particular emphasis on VLF band. All related issues have been addressed: from historical outlook to numerical analysis, from seismology to geotechnics, electronics, information technology. The approach is informative and didactic. This interdisciplinary approach does not imply a problem of skills to the reader, and my goal has been to complete each specific cultural background. Geophysics is a topic where different training paths converge, usually geological or physical. In this case, addressing also technical aspectcts, it is not really possible to setup a guide for a specific professional figure. For this reason, while some topics will be new, others instead will inevitably seem trivial or superficially addressed. The reality is that every topic, as far as possible, has been treated on the same level. When necessary, an appendix to the text will offer further specific insights from time to time.
    Description: Questo testo vuole essere un’introduzione alle problematiche del monitoraggio elettromagnetico a bassa frequenza, con particolare approfondimento sulla banda VLF. Vengono affrontate tutte le tematiche correlate, dall’analisi storica all’analisi numerica, dalla sismologia alla geotecnica, all’elettronica, all’informatica. L’impostazione è divulgativa e didattica. L’approccio interdisciplinare non porrà al lettore un problema di competenze, anzi l’obiettivo è quello di completare ogni specifico bagaglio culturale. La geofisica è già un argomento in cui convergono percorsi formativi diversi, solitamente di impostazione geologica o fisica. In questo caso, in cui si affronta anche un aspetto tecnico, non è proprio possibile indirizzare una guida a una specifica figura professionale. Per questo motivo, mentre alcuni argomenti risulteranno nuovi, altri inevitabilmente appariranno scontati o forse affrontati superficialmente. La realtà è che ogni tematica, per quanto possibile, è stata affrontata allo stesso livello. All’occorrenza, un’appendice offrirà di volta in volta ulteriori approfondimenti specifici.

INGV Terremoti — non essendo ancora stata costituita l’omonima struttura al momento del lavoro che ha portato alla stesura della presente relazione — comprende i ricercatori che si occupano di comunicazione nell’ambito della sismologia nel CNT e nelle sezioni di Roma1, Amministrazione Centrale, Bologna e Milano. In alcune parti è risultato difficile separare ciò che è di pertinenza esclusiva di INGV Terremoti da ciò che riguarda INGV complessivamente, e tale difficoltà verrà segnalata. La presente relazione si basa anche sul precedente lavoro svolto a giugno 2011 e presentato nel report La comunicazione della scienza all’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (31 ottobre 2011, http://hdl.handle.net/2122/7944) e presenta: Capitolo 2. Introduzione al Piano di comunicazione di INGV Terremoti, che illustra le funzioni e le procedure di un Ufficio di Comunicazione modello. Capitolo 3. Analisi dello stato attuale della comunicazione, che presenta le attività, le iniziative e i prodotti attualmente realizzati da INGV Terremoti con un’analisi degli ambiti di intervento e, dove possibile, delle risorse utilizzate. Capitolo 4. Elementi del Piano di comunicazione di INGV Terremoti, che definisce gli obiettivi principali, la mission e linee guida che dovrebbero informare la comunicazione. Capitolo 5. Struttura e funzioni dell’Ufficio Comunicazione, che presenta uno schema di come potrebbero essere organizzate le attività di comunicazione di INGV Terremoti nell’ambito di un contesto più generale. A questa relazione potrà essere affiancato un piano di formazione interna come elemento strategico e innovativo nell’ambito della comunicazione di INGV Terremoti, dedicato in particolare ai processi di valutazione e dei parametri per misurare l'impatto delle azioni intraprese secondo la logica della formative evaluation. Il lavoro è stato impostato secondo criteri di project management che rendono possibile la gestione razionale del progetto in tutta la sua complessità, il rispetto delle consegne e dei tempi e la condivisione con un ampio gruppo di collaboratori.

    Description: This paper summarizes the results of the experiments on the induced breeding and larval rearing of milkfish (Chanos chanos) during the 1979 season. Milkfish larvae could be reared successfully without the use of trochophore larvae of oysters as feed during the first few days. In order to induce the ovulation of wild adult milkfish a higher dose of human chorionic gonadotropin hormone is required.

    Description: Round scad exploration by purse seine in the waters of western Philippines was conducted from April 22 to May 7, 1998 for a period of five (5) fishing days with a total catch of 7.3 tons and an average of 1.5 tons per setting. Dominant species caught were Decapterus spp. having 70.09% of the total catch, followed by Selar spp. at 12.66% and Rastrelliger spp. 10.70%. Among the Decapterus spp. caught, D. macrosoma attained the highest total catch composition by species having 68.81% followed by D. kurroides and D.russelli with 0.31% and 1.14% respectively. The round scad fishery stock was composed mainly of juvenile fish (less than 13 cm) and Age group II (13 cm to 14 cm). Few large round scad at Age group IV and V (20 cm to 28 cm) stayed at the fishery. Other fishes caught were: Auxis rochei (0.85%), A. thazard (0.12%), Caranx spp. (0.45%), Emmilichthys nitidus (0.58%), Euthynnus affinis (0.42%), Leiognathus ruconius (0.58%), Loligo sp. (0.31%), Megalaspis cordyla (0.09%), Rastrelliger spp. (10.70%), Sardinella longiceps (0.03%), Scomberoides lysan (0.24%), Selar spp. (12.66%), Sphyraena spp. (0.90%), Thunnus albacares (0.96%) and others (1.02%). Tuna and tuna like fishes such as yellowfin tuna, eastern little tuna, bullet tuna, frigate tuna and oceanic squid are distributed in the upper latitudes of the survey area. On the other hand, round scads, big-eyed scads and Indian mackerels are dominantly present in the lower latitudes of the survey area.

    Description: An exploratory tuna longline fishing survey was conducted using the research and training vessels of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, the 1,178 GT MV SEAFDEC and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the 165 GT MV MAYA-MAYA in the South China Sea Waters, West of the Philippines from April to May, 1998. A total of 3,796 hooks was set in sixteen (16) fishing stations. There were no tuna caught during the entire survey but only minor and irrelevant species like the Pacific lancetfish, sharks and an opah species, Lampris guttatus. The important fishing and oceanographic factors during the survey and other research results on longline are described and analyzed. Additional longline studies within and near the Philippines territorial waters are also presented to substantiate the research results of the joint SEAFDEC/BFAR resource exploratory.

    Description: Cholera is an acute specific infection caused by the organism, Vibrio cholera. Diagnosis may be confirmed by the presence of large numbers of the comma-shaped bacilli on direct microscopic examination of a fecal or vomitus smear, and by the isolation of the organism on culture. Fish and shellfish have been identified as vehicles of cholera. Large numbers of V. cholera must usually be ingested to cause cholera. Thus problems often occur when poor handling and inadequate refrigeration have allowed the organism to multiply. Presented in the paper is the methodology of determining the presence of Vibrio cholera in fish and fishery products.

    Description: Fishery statistics in Brunei Darussalam have been collected by the Department of Fisheries since the 1940s. In the early 1980s, a number of statistics were collected, such as catch and effort data of artisanal fishermen, aquaculture statistics, processing statistics as well as data from major wet markets focusing on the amount, prices of marketed fish either from the local fishermen or imported. In 1984, the collection of statistics on commercial fishing was started. The statistics have been used in the formulation of fishery management and development policies as well as for sectoral development. Following a brief account of the responsibility and statistic collections of the Department of Fisheries, an examination is made of employment in the fishery sector, fisheries production, fish marketed and the GDP for the fishery industry. Fisheries in Brunei Darussalam is a very healthy industry, where production is well below the maximum allowable harvestable limit of 20,000 tons at 30%. The Department is embarking to increase production from the capture fishery to reduce the country's dependence on imported fish; the same applies for aquaculture, in order to complement production from the capture fisheries. The processing sector is also increasing in importance, especially with the increase in the number of capture fishery licenses, and the demand for quality and value-added products.

    Description: Food poisoning due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a food-borne infection resulting from the ingestion of a large number of this organism (about 106-109 viable cells). The major symptoms are diarrhea and abdominal pain with headache, fever, and vomiting also occurring. The organisms are excreted during the acute stage of the illness after which they decrease rapidly. The differentiation of V. parahaemolyticus from other pathogenic species of Vibrio is based mainly on salt tolerance, Voges-Proskauer reaction, fermentation of sucrose, and growth at 43°C. Presented in the paper is the methodology of determining the presence of Vibrio cholera in fish and fishery products.
