Description: In energy sector, female researchers are still a minority: cultural factors, education, self-limitations, stereotypes, difficulties in work-life balance contribute to this situation. In the first part, the paper reflects on how gender issues are taken into account in the general framework of Responsible Research and Innovation, indicating how gender is pervasive, but still not explicitly addressed in its full potential; in the second part, the GRECO project on solar energy and open science is presented as a project counteracting this situation; gender dimensions are explored from scientists to citizen participation, language used and analysis performed. Finally, the challenge of engendering impact is addressed.

Description: Environmental - health debate is one of the most challenging and complex issue that authorities at local, national and international level have to deal with. Being characterized by a high level of uncertainty, interests and values at stake, the research activity in these fields requires an enlargement of subjects authorized to participate in definition of research questions, work methodologies, collection of relevant information, with a plurality of values and views inside and outside of science [1]. Topics are also covered in COP21, COP22, UN Agenda 2030. The demand of raising awareness about the role that women play in the research environment as professionals and in society at large as stakeholders may be particularly huge in environmental sciences for original contributions they can give [2,3]. The goal at large is to improve the awareness and the knowledge about gender dimension in environmental research, thus putting the basis of further concrete actions in this direction. Scientific research, but also dissemination, public engagement, best practice exchange and networking activities of women scientists associations contribute in reaching this goal. We share and integrate our experiences while promoting debates and synergies. We start from our work in different research performing organizations, and more specifically, from our experiences in research and communication in science and in the environmental field, embracing climate changes, ecology and biodiversity, pollution and health, earth sciences. Dissemination and networking activities of Associazione Donne e Scienza, the women scientists association in Italy, facilitates this process of raising awareness. Multiple gender dimensions exist. First dimension refers to the gender of researchers, from the few pioneers of the past to the huge number of women that today are active in the environment, its balance and health research providing original contributions. These contributions should be largely recognized for their implications - per se - as well as for stimulating new girls to scientific curricula [4,5]. Another dimension is that of gender differences in the environmental impact assessment. Several studies indicate how impacts of environmental pollution as well as of climate changes on women and men vary significantly, and this issue must be addressed when implementing policies [6]. Starting from our professional activities we found that gender analysis has enriched the interpretation of scientific results, avoiding to underestimate health problems and environmental balance, in one sex or another [7, 8, 9]. Moreover, one gender dimension refers to the epistemological level. New research approaches including citizen science and participatory approaches embody characteristics that several scholars consider feminist methods of research [10]. Last gender dimension is that of presence of many women in environmental organizations, a presence arising new research questions about environmental protection and healthcare. Gender analysis expands the boundaries and enriches the environmental and health research and may largely contribute to the environmental debate and new approaches to knowledge.

Description: Volcanic eruptions emit large quantities of gas and solid particles into the atmosphere, with significant impact on environment, climate, human health and air traffic. The EVER-EST project (European Virtual Environment for Research - Earth Science Themes: a solution) is a H2020 project (2015-2018) having as focus the creation of a Virtual Research Environment (VRE) to enhance the ability to interoperate and share knowledge in Earth Science community. Using the VRE, the scientists should be able to collaborate with colleagues located in different parts of the world, to remotely access and share data and research results, to carry out training sessions and discussions, to compare different results and models. Through the VRE, using the Rohub concept (www.rohub.org.), the researchers will have the opportunity to reuse data and, above all, algorithms developed by others scientists. The VPR (Volcanic Plume Removal) procedure, for the retrieval of volcanic ash, ice and SO2 cloud parameters has been implemented into VRE, for the processing of the MODIS sensor data on board the polar NASA Aqua/Terra satellite platforms. In this work the VPR procedure, implemented into the VRE platform, is considered to process all the MODIS images collected during one of the biggest lava fountains occurred at Etna volcano after 2011, the 03 - 09 December 2015 eruption.

Description: An analysis of the perceived image of science, scientists and inventions was conducted with hundreds of drawings made by children for a competition held in Italian schools. The ‘draw a scientist’ approach, as used in several studies, was used to analyse images of scientists. A coarsegrain, quantitative analysis of the prevalence of features exhibited stereotypes as well as new trends, suggesting a further fine-grain, qualitative analysis was necessary. A generally positive picture of the work of scientists emerged as well as a great level of confidence in the potential of science, which is capable of responding to the needs and problems of humanity and of the environment in which we live.

Description: The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Geohazard Supersites and Natural Laboratories initiative (GSNL) is a global partnership among the geophysical scientific community and the satellite and in situ data providers, aiming to promote scientific advancements in the knowledge of seismic and volcanic phenomena. Supersites represent local test beds where to experiment coordination, collaboration and communication approaches and technological solutions which are tailored to the local situation, to ensure that the scientific community can contribute the information needed for the best possible decision making.

Description: Scientists and Artists working together for the planet sustainability is a trend in science communication getting day by day new adepts all over the world. For instance, some Science Institutes have introduced the Artist-in-residence, to increase the opportunities of co-operation to spread in a new intriguing way scientific research. Nevertheless, our Session at EGU 2015, the greatest venue in Europe gathering more than 10.000 scientists involved in the different geophysical disciplines, was the first of the kind. The session was warmly welcomed and successful, with the participation of digital artists, scientists and performers, visual artists, musicians, geologists and geophysicists, photographers and paleontologists. We would like to share with the world wide community of science communicators our experience as pioneers in such circumstances. This will be the occasion to describe the work we have done to establish the first nucleus of a community that can facilitate the identification of more and more effective methods to educate people to a life-style respectful of the planet and its inhabitants. It would also be the occasion to show the motivations behind our attempt to bridge the two cultures bringing together the communities of scientists and artists in a mutual and fruitful co-operation.

Description: In public research organizations in Italy, communication and outreach, as well as research support services, are often left to women. Consequently, the role which female staff plays, becomes central in communication processes both inside and outside the organization. An increasing number of female researchers have to abandon terms like “il ricercatore” (the researcher, used in the masculine form of the noun) or “man/month” in everyday language without fear of being diminished because of the use of feminine, nor of being discriminated while considered feminists. They should instead use inclusive expressions, taking into account gender, hence communicating real images of science and scientists. On the other hand, administrative documents should address the whole personnel, and not only to the ubiquitous “il dipendente” (the employee, masculine noun) opposed to “lavoratrici madri” (“mother-workers”). There is a plenty of opportunities to convey images of science meaning that research is performed both by women and men, and that consequences are addressed to women and men: activities with schools, seminars, outreach events and exhibitions, institutional communication and social networks. The responsibilities of an inclusive communication are numerous; they invest institutions and bodies in charge with structural changes in the organizations as well as those people who every day interact with users and participants of knowledge processes. Training as well as a daily practice are necessary. The paper comments some communication experiences in earth sciences, in progress at the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology of Italy – INGV.
