Notes: Abstract —Assuming that the rheology of the earth’s crust is defined by stress-strain relations containing a memory mechanism, it is seen that the stress field and the maximum shear stress (mss), caused by elongated mountain ranges, are limited mostly to the crust. In a geological, relatively short time, where relaxation is reached, the mss assumes the depth distribution (2πx)exp(–2πx) where x is the depth h measured in units of wavelength w of the mountain range; the mss reaches its maximum value, of about 1/3 the surface load, at the depth x = 1/2π (x = h/w). Contrary to the case of the perfectly elastic earth model, where the mss at the surface is about 0.25 the maximum surface load, in the case of the anelastic earth model the mss is asymptotically nil at the surface and for depths larger than w, the mss is less than 1.2% the maximum surface load. It is seen that the relaxation of the medium causes a rotation of the planes of the mss in a layer near the surface and that, in the case when the surface load is applied periodically, there is a phase shift between the surface load and the stress at depth which is less than four days when the period is one year; it is smaller for shorter periods. It is also seen that the creation of reservoirs lasting a finite time causes a small variation of the mss in the crust which, when the reservoir is removed, leaves a residual mss with maximum at the surface and decreasing exponentially with depth; for a load lasting one year it takes 250 days to reduce to 40% the stress at depth. As a consequence of the residual mss, caused by the load of the topography, after earthquakes the local mss will not drop to zero; this decreases the time required by tectonic forces to release the next earthquake and increases the rate of seismicity.

Notes: Summary Adopting thePizzetti-Somigliana method and using elliptic integrals we have obtained closed formulas for the space gravity field in which one of the equipotential surfaces is a triaxial ellipsoid. The same formulas are also obtained in first approximation of the equatorial flattening avoiding the use of the elliptic integrals. Using data from satellites and Earth gravity data the gravitational and geometric bulge of the Earth's equator are computed. On the basis of these results and on the basis of recent gravity data taken around the equator between the longitudes 50° to 100° E, 155° to 180° E, and 145° to 180° W, we question the advantage of using a triaxial gravity formula and a triaxial ellipsoid in geodesy. Closed formulas for the space field in which a biaxial ellipsoid is an equipotential surface are also derived in polar coordinates and its parameters are specialized to give the international gravity formula values on the international ellipsoid. The possibility to compute the Earth's dimensions from the present Earth gravity data is the discussed and the value ofMG=(3.98603×1020 cm3 sec−2) (M mass of the Earth,G gravitational constant) is computed. The agreement of this value with others computed from the mean distance Earth-Moon is discussed. The Legendre polinomials series expansion of the gravitational potential is also added. In this series the coefficients of the polinomials are closed formulas in terms of the flattening andMG.

Notes: The present study reports the empirical results of trait recognition (TR) as an alternative early warning system for identifying failing US commercial banks. TR has previously been employed in the sciences, and unlike previous statistical and nonparametric models, incorporates a large number of interaction variables based on the independent variables taken two and three at a time. Discriminatory original and interaction variables (or traits) are selectively retained for use in classifying observations based on a voting procedure. Comparative results for failed and nonfailed US commercial banks using Call Report data indicate that the TR model generally outperformed logit regression models, in some cases by a considerable margin. A major implication of these results is that TR could be useful in other binary choice problems in business finance and accounting, including predictions of nonbank failures, bond rating changes, and other firm events.

Notes: 1. A Worden gravity meter has been tested for sinusoidal variations in the external temperature, by determining simultaneously the corresponding variations of temperature inside the Dewar vacuum bottle, and the variations in the readings.A second Worden gravimeter has been tested for rapid variations in external pressure.

Notes: Abstract The multiplication of the eigenfrequencies of an anelastic infinite plate and of an anelastic spherical shell caused by the theology is discussed. In each case the solution, of the integral-differential equation, satisfying given initial and boundary conditions, is determined integrating over all the set of the Riemann sheets of its Laplace Transform.

Notes: Summary The number of earthquakes ΔMn(M) with magnitude in the range between M and M+ΔM satisfy the empirical lawlog n(M)=a–bM where a and b are parameters which depend on the seismic region. This paper introduces the first mechanical model to explain the empirical law and introduces a physical meaning to the parameters a and b.
