Description: The larva of the blowfly Cochliomyia hominivorax, also known as the screwworm, eats the living flesh of cattle and sheep and other warm-blooded animals. A program to eradicate the screwworm in the United States was initiated in the 1950's. The program was very effective until 1968, but severe screwworm outbreaks occurred in 1972 to 1976 and in 1978. Although the program has again been effective since 1979, the possibility of outbreaks recurring in the future has highlighted the need for a broader understanding of the pest. Studies of screwworm populations in the United Stated and Mexico indicate that much of the genetic diversity of this insect is distributed among sympatric non-interbreeding populations. A new approach may be required to retain the effectiveness of the control program and to prevent a serious outbreak from threatening the economic viability of the U.S. livestock industry.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Richardson, R H -- Ellison, J R -- Averhoff, W W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Jan 22;215(4531):361-70.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7199204" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: By the close of this century the world may have to feed as many as 2 billion additional people. Most of them will be born in developing countries, especially in marginal lands ill-suited for food production. This article focuses on efforts by the International Agricultural Research Centers to increase food production in the Third World and addresses the social and ecological issues raised by the introduction of high-yielding varieties into fertile Third World lands and describe how varieties are being tailored for introduction into marginal areas.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Plucknett, D L -- Smith, N J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Jul 16;217(4556):215-20.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7089555" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Ground water contamination is of increasing concern in the United States because about 50 percent of our drinking water comes from well water. The causes of contamination stem from both point sources and nonpoint sources. Since ground water moves slowly, the contaminant may affect only a small portion of an aquifer for a considerable period of time. Deleterious effects on human health have resulted from pathogenic organisms in ground water and from its toxic chemical composition. It is difficult to estimate the extent of contamination on a national basis as the frequency of instances of contamination is very variable. Remedial actions to clean up aquifers are difficult, expensive, and sometimes not feasible. Many of the laws and regulations that control ground water contamination are designed with other main objectives.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Pye, V I -- Patrick, R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Aug 19;221(4612):713-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6879171" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Abstract Short term14C labelling experiments and enzymatic activities related to primary pathways of photosynthesis have been studied in the cyanophytaOscillatoria rubescens D.C. from axenic cyclostat cultures. Responses of samples from cultures with different amounts of nitrogen are presented and compared. Variations in photosynthetic pigments are used to quantify the degree of nitrogen starvation at different levels. PEPcarboxylase activity remains low and is not affected by nitrogen starvation. RuBPcarboxylase activity is lowered to nearly two thirds of its normal metabolic rate by starvation but PEPcarboxykinase and aspartate aminotransferase activities are significantly higher in this case. Malate dehydrogenase is slightly altered and malic enzyme is never active. Starved algae replaced in fresh complete media fix rapidly14C in nitrogen compounds such as amino acids. Results are discussed in regard to both physiological and ecological characteristics ofO. rubescens. PEPcarboxykinase can play a role in making efficient use of HCO 3 - .

Notes: Abstract A model of the competition of n species for a single essential periodically fluctuating nutrient is considered. Instead of the familiar Michaelis-Menten kinetics for nutrient uptake, we assume only that the uptake rate functions are positive, increasing and bounded above. Sufficient conditions for extinction are given. The existence of a nutrient threshold under which the Principle of Competitive Exclusion holds, is proven. For two species systems the following very general result is proven: All solutions of a τ-periodic, dissipative, competitive system are either τ-periodic or approach a τ-periodic solution. A complete description of the geometry of the Poincaré operator of the two species system is given.

Notes: Abstract Forest regeneration in the vegetation complex of the submontane belt in the Southern Alps involves the active participation ofOstrya carpinifolia woods and their wood edge communities. The corresponding syndynamical processes are described by employing phytosociological, phytogeographical and ecological methods. It is concluded that: (i) The communities of the grassland-wood transition are of major importance in the successional developments in this man-made vegetation complex. (ii) Many species occurring in the region of the deciduous forests of Eurasia find their refuge in such transitional communities and are supposed to play an important part in the succession. (iii) Ostrya carpinifolia is considered as an early successional tree species.

Notes: Summary Growth responses of Frankia isolates to decreasing water potential were monitored in systems where potentials were controlled by KCl, NaCl and Polyethylene glycol. The highest potential tested was −2 bar (basal medium). The general pattern emerging was that isolates fromAlnus glutinosa, A. viridis andComptonia peregrina showed declining growth at potentials below −2 to −5 bar. AMyrica gale isolate showed declining growth with decreasing potential. All isolates were more sensitive to decreases in potential in a matric controlled than an osmotic controlled system. They all showed approximately 50 percent growth reduction at −5 to −8 bar, and meagre growth at −16 bar after 35 days. The Comptonia isolate was the most vigorous at low potentials. Nitrogen fixation ability was monitored for two isolates. Highest specific activities were observed between −3 and −5 bar for the Myrica isolate and between −5 and −7.5 bar for theA. glutinosa isolate.

Notes: Summary Hippophaë rhamnoides seedlings were grown in sterilized and unsterilized soil from a decliningH. rhamnoides scrub, to which different numbers ofLongidorus sp. andTylenchorhynchus microphasmis were added. In sterilized and unsterilized soil, retardation of growth, content of dry matter in the shoots, and incidence of deformed short lateral roots of test plants were positively correlated with counts of both nematode species. Nitrogen content in the shoots, nodulation on the roots of test plants and increase increase in nematodes were negatively correlated with the initial number of both nematode species in sterilized soil. In unsterilized soil, an unknown biotic factor was present that reduces growth ofH. rhamnoides, nodulation and multiplication of the nematodes. This factor seems to interact with the nematodes in reducing growth ofH. rhamnoides.

Notes: Summary Catalase activity of a loamy sand under a 3-year crop rotation in the southeastern U.S.A. was monitored. Corn (Zea mays L.), cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] were the summer crops in the rotation. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was planted after corn, and soybean was followed by a winter fallow period. Cotton was followed by a mixture of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) and crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum Gibelli & Belli) which was eventually plow-incorporated as a green manure. Highest mean catalase activities were recorded in soil under the wheat, soybean, and winter legume crops; lowest activities were found in soil bearing corn and cotton, and during the winter fallow period. The fertilization regime influenced soil catalase activity independently of the crop. Soil deficient in any of the major elements showed low enzyme activity. Highest activity was found in soil fertilized with P and K, and with N supplied by a winter legume crop. Addition of supplementary mineral nitrogen to this regime reduced catalase activity. Elimination of the winter legume crop from an otherwise complete fertilization regime resulted in a drastic reduction in enzyme activity. In soil receiving a complete fertilization regime there was a close correlation between soil catalase and xylanase activities. A similar correlation between these two enzymes was not found in soil receiving incomplete fertilization.

Notes: Summary Chitinase activity was determined by incubating a mixture of toluene-treated soil with 1% (w/w) colloidal chitin suspension for 18 h at 37°C and then, after dilution, assaying the amount of N-acetyl-glucosamine released. Maximal chitinase activity was observed at 45°C and optimal pH for enzymatic reaction was 5.0–5.5. Soil chitinase activity decreased with increasing soil depth and was significantly affected by crop cover and fertilization regime. Chitin added to soil stimulated chitinase activity. Enzyme activity was correlated with the soil fungal population but not with numbers of actinomycetes or bacteria. A specialized mycoflora was associated with chitin decomposition.

Notes: Synopsis Sixteen yearling winter flounder, tested individually for 3-day periods in electronic shuttleboxes, voluntarily occupied an 8–27°C range of temperature, with a modal final thermal preferendum of 18.5°C (mean 18.7°C, median 19°C, midpoint 17.5°C, s.d. 1.9°C, S k + 0.33). The locomotor activity pattern of the yearling fish in the laboratory was markedly nocturnal, with mean hourly nocturnal activity exceeding mean hourly diurnal activity by a factor of 3.4. Maximum activity occurred at 0300 EST, minimum activity at 1400 EST. While activity generally increased with temperature, a local activity minimum occurred at 18.7°C, coinciding with the 24-hour mean final thermal preferendum. Comparison of these laboratory data with previously published field data suggest that behavioral responses to temperature and light play significant roles in determining age- and size-specific differences in seasonal depth stratification and onshore-offshore distributions in this species.

Notes: Synopsis Development of the fish community on a submerged 16 m barge and variation in fish abundance on nearby transects were surveyed twice monthly for twenty months. A steady increase in abundance was observed for certain fishes on the barge, whereas a few species exhibited distinct seasonal variation on both the barge and transects. Most of the seasonal species settled between March and May. Some seasonal species appeared to be site selective in their settlement and consequently settled juveniles were clumped in their distribution. An abundance of preferred topographical features may be why settlement was relatively high at the study site and indirectly why predators became significantly (r3 = 7.67***, N = 37) more abundant at the study area during the months of maximum prey settlement. Concurrent settlement of several species during the same few months may be important because juveniles become an abundant food source to predators during those few months only. Periodic swamping of predators by abundant juvenile prey may improve the chances for individuals of rarer prey species to be overlooked and therefore be succesfully recruited.

Notes: Synopsis In January 1977, a record breaking cold spell caused fish kills at Big Pine Key, Florida. Census data collected before and after the cold spell from a series of model reefs constructed in 1975 showed a significant drop in mean number of reef fish species and individuals. Following this disturbance, high recruitment of juveniles occurred, presumably due to reduced competition, predation, or a combination of these. Model and natural patch reef communities examined the summer following the cold spell (1977) were significantly different from those examined the summer before (1976) and the second summer following the cold spell (1978). During the summer of 1977, a significantly smaller mean fish size and a significantly greater mean number of species and individuals were observed. Increased species richness following the cold spell is consistent with the intermediate disturbance hypothesis. Contrary to some theoretical predictions, results suggest reef fish communities are highly resilient to some regional disturbance.

Notes: It is shown theorectically that the classical formula for calculating the theoretical plate number from squared first central moment, tms2, and second central moment, σ2, according to ntheor = tms2/σ2 is valid only when the capacity ratio, k approaches infinity. The general relation between the classical experimental HETP value, H = L/nmtheor, and the underlying true theoretical plate height, ΔL, is found to be\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm H' = }\frac{{{\rm L(\sigma ')}^{\rm 2} }}{{\overline {\rm t}_{{\rm ms}}^{\rm 2} }}{\rm = }\frac{{{\rm 2}\overline {\rm D} _{\rm m} }}{{\overline {\rm u} }}{\rm + }\overline {\rm k} \frac{{{\rm 2}\overline {\rm D} _{\rm s} }}{{\overline {\rm u} }}{\rm + \Delta L}\frac{{\overline {\rm k} }}{{{\rm 1 + }\overline {\rm k} }} $$\end{document} when (σ′)2 is the total column contribution to band broadening, L is the column length, Dm is the average diffusion coefficient of the sample component in the mobile phase, Ds is its value in the stationary phase, and u is the average linear velocity of the mobile phase. The mobile phase displacement, as well as the mass exchange process, is assumed to be continuous, but the application of the plate concept conditions leads to a mass balance equation that can be interpreted as belonging to a modified discontinuous plate model. The contributions 2Dm/u and k 2 Ds/u from longitudinal sample diffusion in the mobile and stationary phases, respectively, are consistent with the assumption that the processes are statistically independent, although the common solution technique of the differential equations does not take full account of this independence.

Notes: ΔRf, the separation between a pair of compounds on a thin layer chromatographic plate, can be predicted as a function of solvent composition for certain binary systems. This allows the prediction of optimum solvent composition for separating a mixture of compounds by thin layer chromatography. A new solvent polarity ranking, based on calculation of ΔRf is described.

Notes: The chromatographic behavior of phenols in reversed-phase mode liquid chromatography differs from that of non-ionic compounds such as alkyl alcohols, alkylbenzenes, halogenated benzenes, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and aromatic acids. Therefore, the retention times of 61 phenols were measured in a system of an octadecyl bonded silica gel and acetonitrile/water mixtures. The logarithm of the capacity ratio (log k') was found to be a linear function of the hydrophobicity (log P) in acidic acetonitrile/water mixtures. This result was applied to a different octadecyl bonded silica gel. Eight phenols were selected as standard compounds, and their log k' values were measured in 0.05 M phosphoric acid in 10 to 90% acetonitrile/water mixtures. An empirical polynomial relation was obtained between the concentration of acetonitrile and the slope of the log k' vs log P curve. Finally the capacity ratio of all phenols were calculated in given eluents by the equations derived from the measurements of standard compounds and the calculated log P values. The difference between predicted capacity ratios and measured ones was within 10%.

Notes: Silane-coupling agents, commonly used for fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP), were applied for deactivation of silanol sites in glass capillary columns prior to coating with mediumpolarity phases such as Carbowax and Superox. The columns, prepared in a two-stage process in the case of glass (acidic leaching and drying, dynamic cold silanization followed by static coating with the phase) or a one stage process in the case of fused silica, gave the best results when deactivation and hence wettability were induced by glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane.

Notes: A test mixture containing 28 compounds plus their stable isotopically labeled analogs was analyzed on a daily basis for one month during a series of routine fused silica capillary column GC/MS analyses in order to establish the precision with which retention times and responses were produced. These long-term precision data were evaluated to determine how to best predict retention times and how to best reproduce quantification. Results clearly indicate that relative retention times should be calculated using the reference compound eluted most closely to the target compound and that quantification should be based on relative response using a chemically “similar” compound.

Notes: A method is described for the determination of fenvalerate (cyano(3-phenoxyphenyl)methyl 4-chloro-α-(1-methylethyl)-benzeneacetate) residues on woolen cloth. The fenvalerate was Soxhlet-extracted from the treated fabric with acetone for four hours at a reflux rate of six solvent exchanges per hour. The fenvalerate residue was determined by gas-liquid chromatography with a flame ionization detector. The results were quantitated by comparing integrator counts obtained from extracts of treated samples with those obtained from known standards. The method was sensitive to 0.00054% fenvalerate by weight. Recoveries from fabric treated with 0.00054% to 0.215% averaged 94.8%. The response of the detector was linear over a 400-fold range of fenvalerate concentrations.

Notes: The choice of stationary phase for gas chromatography is dictated by the nature of the analytes. Polarity and selectivity are known to play an important role. This paper suggests equations for calculation of specific retention volumes of any compounds from their retention indices.

Notes: Five commercial varieties of uncoated fused silica capillary tubing used in high resolution gas chromatography were subjected to cobalt-60 gamma radiation. The advantages and superior performance of fused silica open tubular columns coated with OV-1 and subsequently immobilized or crosslinked in situ by radiation is reported in a previous paper in this Journal; however, in this investigation a loss in flexibility of irradiated capillaries was also noted. Quantitative measurements on flexibility were performed on specimens of irradiated fused silica capillaries, indicating that changes do indeed occur upon irradiation. Scanning electron micrographs also illustrate slight deterioration of the outer protective polyimide coating. Most surprisingly, it was also established that a variation does exist in the flexibility of the commercially available raw material studied.

Notes: Heliflex Chirasil-Val, a modified form of the original Chirasil-Val phase coated on fused silica capillary, has been investigated with regard to its resolution efficiency and the separation profile for various enantiomeric derivatives of amino acid. The best results could be obtained with TFA-Et derivatives by reason of the relatively low column temperature required.

Notes: A sensitive gas liquid chromatographic (GLC) assay was developed for plasma determinations of 8-chloro-6-(2′ -fluorophenyl)-1-methyl-4H-imidazo[1,5 α][1,4]benzodiazepine (compound I) and its hydroxymethylimidazo metabolite (compound II). The internal standards used were 8-chloro-6-(2′ -chlorophenyl)-1 -methyl-4H-imidazo[1,5 α][1,4]benzodiazepine (compound VI) and 7-chloro-5-(2′ -fluorophenyl)-1, 3-dihydro-1-(hydroxyethyl)-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one (compound VII) for compounds I and II, respectively. Following extraction, and silylation for compound II, compounds I and II were analyzed by GLC using a glass column packed with 5% OV-101 on Gas-Chrom Q, and a 63Ni electron-capture detector. The GLC method was validated by a CI-GC/MS technique. The detection limit of the assay is approximately 4-5 ng/ml for compound I and 3 ng/ml for compound II. The method was used in comparative pharmacokinetic studies of the distribution of the two compounds in arterial and venous blood.

Notes: Simultaneous detection with a 700-A Hall™ and an NPD detector is an effective technique for characterizing chloro-and chloronitroanilines in highly complex Publicly Owned Water Treatment Works (POTW) sludges. The utilization of a modified Varian effluent splitter and a SE-54 fused silica capillary column permitted the detection of mid-picogram quantities of the polar chloroanilines without sacrificing peak shape. The response of the Hall™ detector in the halogen mode was roughly proportional to the number of chlorine atoms present, while the response of the Hall™ in the nitrogen mode and the NPD was less predictably influenced by the presence of one or more nitro groups. When combined with retention time data, the ratio of the NPD response to the Hall™ response has been found to substantiate the presence of chloro- and chloronitroanilines in sludge extracts.

Notes: The chromatographic behavior of some hydrocarbons and some of their nitro derivates after preconditioning with solvent vapors has been investigated. After preloading with cyclohexane or hexane an improved separation of some sample pairs is observed. Furthermore, inversion of Rf values takes place. The preloading of the reversed-phase plates permits utilization of mobile phase with higher water content, thus leading to a significant shortening of developing time.

Notes: Considerations of TLC process optimization have been based on the thermodynamic theory of adsorption from multicomponent solvents using experimental and theoretical RM1, 2 = f (Φ1) relationships. It was found that a relationship exists between the Az parameter (log k1,2∞ where k1,2∞ is the partition coefficient of the substance chromatographed) of the above theory and pKa values of substances as well as the solubility parameter δ of the mobile phase components. Analysis of the Az values of substances shows that a slight variation therein is associated with lower selectivity of chromatographic separation.

Notes: This paper describes a cold trap/reinjection system for capillary columns which utilizes a flow switching rotary valve. Sample enrichment is performed in a liquid nitrogen-cooled glass trap attached to the valve. Evaporation of enriched compounds is carried out with the aid of an electric heating coil. Parameters such as cryogenic trapping efficiency, reinjection rates, transference of sample, and adsorption, as well as overall performance, are examined. In addition, a comparison is made between the cold trap/reinjection technique and injection with a gas-tight syringe.

Notes: Whereas the immobilization of apolar silicone phases is essentially understood and mastered, the corresponding treatment of even moderately polar phases remains problematical. Upon attack by peroxide radicals, these phases respond by forming active transformation products rather than by bonding to the support surface or to neighboring molecules. OV-1701 is at present the most polar stationary phase which can reasonably be immobilized. An essential feature of the practical procedure is the prevention of film breakage after coating the inert support surface and before immobilization. Two ways of overcoming this problem are presented.

Notes: Glass capillary gas chromatography has been investigated as a method for the analysis of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAH) using both splitless and on-column injection techniques. The nitro-PAH showed good chromatographic performance and thermal stability under the GC conditions used. Retention times and response factors of several nitro-PAH were compared to those of conventional PAH.Simultaneous flame ionization and thermionic nitrogen selective detection was used to facilitate identification of nitro-PAH in complex samples. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated on two samples of commercial carbon black. Besides 1-nitropyrene several isomeric dinitropyrenes have been identified.

Notes: A quality control procedure for Fused Silica Capillary Column Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (FSCC GC/MS) was tested and shown to produce similar response factors at five Spectroscopy (FSCC GC/MS) was tested and shown to produce similar response factors at five laboratories. The average relative standard deviation (RSD) of interlaboratory response factors for fifty three compounds of environmental interest determined at each laboratory at nominal injected weights of 20, 100, and 200 ng was found to be 18.9% for four of the five laboratories which participated in this work. These data demonstrate that similar response factors can be attained in routine GC/MS measurements when adequate quality control is maintained.

Notes: The total length-based second moment contribution from longitudinal sample diffusion in both phases on a column, σc,2D, is derived by adding individual partial differential contributions to a partial differential equation accounting for the longitudinal diffusion processes only. Although each diffusion-dispersed sample part is equilibrated between two phases, the resulting σc,2,D (= 2Dmtm + 2Dsts) can be interpreted as the sum of two independent contributions in accordance with the variance addition rule. (Dm and Ds are the mean diffusion coefficients and tmand ts the mean residence times of the sample in the mobile and stationary phases, respectively.) The same σc,2D expression is derived from the random walk model of Giddings by treating the diffusional process in each phase as statistically independent of the other processes. Under these conditions the broadening contribution from longitudinal diffusion in the mobile phase is shown to be independent of the velocity profile.

Notes: A simple method is described for the quantitative determination of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) in water at the sub-ppb level. A micro gas-phase extractor advantageously replaces other preconcentration and purification techniques. The extract is analyzed by capillary gas chromatography without further enrichment. The recovery at the ppb level was nearly 100% for organochlorine pesticides and more than 80% for PCB's. The complete procedure including sample preparation, steam distillation-extraction, and capillary gas chromatographic analysis is carried out in less than four hours.

Notes: An ion mobility detector that has been specifically developed for interfacing with capillary gas chromatography is investigated in the negative ion mode. Like the electron capture detector, to which this instrument is closely related, the ion mobility detector shows an enhanced response to low molecular weight halogenated compounds when a small quantity of oxygen is doped into the make-up gas flow. Under O2 doping conditions, the device can operate in a reactant ion monitoring mode responding universally to compounds capable of capturing thermal electrons and in a tunable selective product ion mode providing increased selectivity over that achieved by the ECD. At an oxygen concentration of 0.5%, minimum detectable amounts as low as 600 femtograms have been realized for carbon tetrachloride. Selectivity of chloro- versus bromo- compounds is demonstrated using a mixture of p-dichlorobenzene and p-dibromobenzene.

Notes: Interest in monitoring halogenated organics in drinking water and natural surface and ground water in the low ppb range continues to grow. There is a tendency to include still more volatile halocarbons, the trace determination of which is known to be rather demanding. This prompted us to re-examine the feasibility of large-volume direct aqueous injection onto capillary columns, coupled with ECD. A primary problem was to avoid simultaneous elution of water with halocarbons, since water suppresses the ground current of the ECD. The following measures contributed to the solution of this problem.Apolar, extremely inert, columns are required to elute water completely, and even before very light halocarbons. Their coatings have to be far thicker (≍ 5 mUm) than commonly employed thick films since they must permit isothermal analysis at a column temperature around 100°C in order to ensure rapid and complete elution of water. Finally, it is essential that sampling be carried out on-column for two reasons: diffusion of water vapor in the injector, resulting in delayed elution, is then eliminated, and peak distortion during splitless injection is avoided.Although we now know that persilylated columns with immobilized coatings withstand routine water injections, more longterm experience is needed to provide detailed recommendations for the handling of these columns.

Notes: Four para-substituted cholesterol cinnamates were synthesized and evaluated for utility as gas chromatograph (GC) liquid crystal stationary phases. The capability of the phases to separate olefinic geometrical isomers was found to be dependent on the position of the olefinic bond. When unsaturation occurred at positions four carbons or greater from the terminal methyl of the compounds investigated, the relative ability of the phases to separate geometrical isomers was p-Cl 〉 p-Me 〉 cholesterol cinnamate 〉 p-MeO derivative 〉 p-NO2. When unsaturation occurred at positions four carbons or less from the terminal methyl the relative ability of the para-derivatives of cholesterol cinnamate to separate geometrical isomers was reversed.

Notes: The recently derived general equation for the capacity ratio has been utilized to study the dependence of selectivity and resolution upon mobile phase composition. This equation accounts for differences in molecular size of solutes and solvents, and for the energetic heterogeneity of the adscrbent surface. Model calculations illustrating the influence of these factors on the selectivity and resolution are presented and discussed.
