    Fisheries Science Collaborations: The Critical Role of the Community (2005)

    Description: The present paper is based on a collation of information, through both a literature review and an internet search, on North American programs that involve some kind of scientific collaboration between fishers and fisheries scientists. It identifies four basic models of such collaboration and offers examples of collaborative activities that seem to fit into each of them. The first model defers to the expertise of the scientist for all major decisions and creates a strong programmatic distinction between what is science, and shall be done by scientists, and what are other, related activities that can be carried out by others. Various kinds of tagging programs, fisher advisory boards, at-sea research collaboration and many other activities fit this model. The second model, traditional ecological knowledge, recognizes that fishers have available to them a unique, local knowledge of the resource that can make a supplementary contribution to fisheries science.     Interaction of Marine Turtles with Fisheries in the Mediterranean (2005)

    Description: At present, the impact of accidental catch on sea turtle populations is one of the most urgent problems that must be solved to ensure the survival of all these species worldwide. In the Mediterranean, too, all marine turtle species are affected by fishing activities, in particular the loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and the green (Chelonia mydas) turtles, which are more common than the others and are the only ones breeding in this sea. Since the Mediterranean populations of both species seem to be genetically isolated from the Atlantic ones (Bowen et al., 1992; Bowen et al., 1993; Laurent et al., 1993), fishing-induced mortality probably cannot be counterbalanced by immigration. This implies that the survival of the Mediterranean populations of these species depends to a great extent on the conservation effort that the Mediterranean countries carry on in the near future to reduce accidental mortality.

At the same time the international fishing industry seems intent on exploiting West African waters to a greater and greater extent. Nicolien Zuijdgeest and photographer Bas Beentjes visited the region and found that the sustainability of fisheries is being seriously threatened.

    Description: In 1997, IUCN-The World Conservation Union, with the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development, initiated a project to examine the relationship between the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the rules of international trade–those administered by the World Trade Organisation (WTO), in particular. The project was motivated by a widely shared concern that the aims of the CBD, which are essentially to conserve and equitably distribute the benefits of the environment, might be undermined by the WTO, which aims at the liberalisation of trade. Liberalised trade has the potential to integrate economies, regionally and globally, in mutually beneficial ways. But some observers are concerned that it may do so at a cost of impairing the environment and amplifying disparities in wealth, much of which, in poorer nations, is disproportionately represented in endowments of natural resources. Other commentators have claimed to locate synergistic potential, suggesting, for example, that trade law’s anti-subsidy disciplines might be conscripted into the campaign against environmental abuses such as overfishing.

    Marine biological research in Mozambique: past, present and future (2005)

    Description: This synopsis describes the development of marine biological research, including fisheries, in Mozambique. With around 3000 km of coastline, the living resources of the sea playa major role in the Mozambican society, mainly as a source of protein and income for the population, and of foreign revenue through exports. In the first years, after independence, in 1975, research activities in marine sciences were limited and mainly concentrated to fisheries through cooperation with Norway and the Soviet Union. A new era for biology started in 1985 when the Faculty of Biology at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane was re-opened. A 5yr curriculum towards a licentiate degree was introduced with a strong marine profile. Since the 1990s, a very dynamic de-velopment in Mozambican marine biological research has occurred. Several academic degrees in marine biology from universities abroad were obtained, and local expertise developed; building vital institutions and enrolling in advanced research activities.

    Description: The Fisheries, International Trade, and Sustainable Development programme aims to inject both the sustainable development and natural resource management perspectives into the debate on trade and fisheries. The ultimate objective of the programme is to make international trade in fisheries supportive of sustainable development. The programme's main activity will be to convene a series of policy dialogues on fisheries, international trade, and sustainable development which will link processes and actors, and bring together all the different stakeholders' perspectives. Initially the programme aims to facilitate a process in which each stakeholder can move beyond the constraints inherent in his or her position, to enable all participants to step back from particular debates and stand-offs regarding fisheries, trade, and sustainable development-related issues such as subsidies, ecolabelling, or conservation measures. The dialogues, research, and information exchange process will seek to build common understanding and a baseline of shared information, and pave the way for participating stakeholders to seek solutions compatible with the aims of sustainable development by exploring ways to improve resource management while safeguarding the livelihoods of those who depend on fisheries, and ensuring economic growth for developing countries.

    Description: The marine fisheries production from African coastal countries, combined with that of freshwater production of the continent is estimated to be 6 millions metric tons, corresponding only 5 % of the total world production. Africa's contribution to fisheries products (1,5 %) is insignificant compared to that of world commerce which is around 44 millions tons. This deplorable situation is due to a certain number of problems which include s among others, the relative biogenic poverty of African waters, the exploitation of African waters by foreign vessels, the total lack of catches effected by the African vessels out of their regional boundaries, the lack of knowledge on the mastering of commercialisation and on veritable commercial politics of fisheries products, including quality assurance. In addition to this, the almost inexistence of the aquaculture in the sub-Saharan countries. This paper analyses the African fisheries in the whole continent and presents the general characters, notably its evolution, fisheries resources, valorisation and consumption of fisheries products. The global analysis made here accords a priority to markets as well as to the framework of contribution of these products and tries, at the end of the 20th century, to present some trends. Facing the globalisation phenomena, how will African fisheries producers be challenged in the new millennium? This continental level analysis brings out field application and some different development perspectives for both small scale and industrial fisheries sub-sectors.

    Global patterns of predator diversity in the open oceans (2005)

    Description: The open oceans comprise most of the biosphere, yet patterns and trends of species diversity there are enigmatic. Here, we derive worldwide patterns of tuna and billfish diversity over the past 50 years, revealing distinct subtropical "hotspots" that appeared to hold generally for other predators and zooplankton. Diversity was positively correlated with thermal fronts and dissolved oxygen and a nonlinear function of temperature (approximately 25 degrees C optimum). Diversity declined between 10 and 50% in all oceans, a trend that coincided with increased fishing pressure, superimposed on strong El Nino-Southern Oscillation-driven variability across the Pacific.     Trophic cascades in a formerly cod-dominated ecosystem (2005)

    Description: Removal of top predators from ecosystems can result in cascading effects through the trophic levels below, completely restructuring the food web. Cascades have been observed in small-scale or simple food webs, but not in large, complex, open-ocean ecosystems. Using data spanning many decades from a once cod-dominated northwest Atlantic ecosystem, we demonstrate a trophic cascade in a large marine ecosystem.     Climate change and distribution shifts in marine fishes (2005)

    Description: We show that the distributions of both exploited and nonexploited North Sea fishes have responded markedly to recent increases in sea temperature, with nearly two-thirds of species shifting in mean latitude or depth or both over 25 years. For species with northerly or southerly range margins in the North Sea, half have shown boundary shifts with warming, and all but one shifted northward. Species with shifting distributions have faster life cycles and smaller body sizes than nonshifting species.     Notes: Durch Ausschütteln von Cer(IV)-nitratlösungen mit Äther bei HNO3-Konzentrationen 〉4,5 n läßt sich Ce weitgehend frei von Verunreinigungen in hoher Ausbeute gewinnen. Thoriumnitrat kann aus schwach salpetersauren Lösungen bei Gegenwart gewisser anderer, in hoher Konzentration zugesetzter Nitrate mit verschiedenen organischen Lösungsmitteln ausgeschüttelt und in großer Reinheit erhalten werden. Auch Scandiumnitrat kann man aus wässeriger Lösung extrahieren, wenn diese LiNO3 in sehr hoher Konzentration enthält. Das Verhalten einer größeren Anzahl weiterer Elemente beim Ausschütteln salpetersaurer Nitratlösungen mit Äther wird untersucht.

    Notes: In2S3 wurde mit BeS, MgS, CaS, SrS, BaS, ZnS, CdS, HgS, SnS, PbS, TiS, VS, CrS, MnS, FeS, CoS und NiS im molaren Verhältnis 1:1 bei Temperaturen zwischen 900 und 1200° C umgesetzt.Bei sämtlichen Versuchen wurde eine Umsetzung beobachtet. Eindeutig wurde jedoch nur die Bildung der Verbindungen MgIn2S4, CaIn2S4, CdIn2S4, HgIn2S4, MnIn2S4, FeIn2S4, CoIn2S4 und NiIn2S4 nachgewiesen.Von diesen Verbindungen kristallisieren CaIn2S4, HgIn2S4 und wahrscheinlich auch CdIn2S4 im Spinellgitter mit „Normalstruktur“, MgIn2S4, FeIn2S4, CoIn2S4 und NiIn2S4 ebenfalls im Spinellgitter aber in der „Austauschstruktur“. MnIn2S4 kristallisiert in einer Spinellstruktur, die wahrscheinlich eine Zwischenstellung zwischen der Normal- und der Austauschstruktur einnimmt.Es werden die Faktoren diskutiert, die für das Auftreten der Normal- bzw. der Austauschstruktur bei den hier untersuchten Thiospinellen verantwortlich sind.

    Notes: Zur Darstellung einiger 3-Thionitroso-sulfonium- (= Thiotrithiazyl-) Verbindungen, (SN)3S · X (wobei X = Cl, Br, -NCS, -O · SO3H) werden verbesserte Arbeitsvorschriften gegeben. Die saure und alkalische Hydrolyse des Chlorids Cl · S(NS)3 sowie des (HNS)4 wird quantitativ untersucht.Bei der mit Natriumacetatlösung unter Eiskühlung vollzogenen Hydrolyse von (SN)3S · Cl entsteht die nur kurze Zeit haltbare Grundsubstanz obiger Reihe: (SN)3S · OH. Führt man hingegen die Hydrolyse des Chlorids bei Raumtemperatur durch, so resultiert die um eine SN-Gruppe ärmere, etwas beständigere Verbindung, die man als 4-Thionitroso-disulfinsäure, HO(SN)2S-S(NS)2OH, auffassen kann. Dafür spricht neben ihrer Entstehung das bei stark alkalischer Verseifung auftretende Mengenverhältnis Thiosulfat: Sulfit = 2,5. - Die neuen Hydroxylderivate sind röntgenamorphe und auffallenderweise schwarze Körper.

    Notes: Aus Molybdänmetall und MoO3 werden im Bereich der Zusammensetzung MoO0,10 bis MoO2,97 Oxydgemische hergestellt und durch Erhitzen auf verschiedene Temperaturen zur Reaktion gebracht.Beim Erhitzen auf 580° werden folgende Phasen ermittelt: α-Phase MoO3, γ-Phase Mo4O11 (MoO2,75-MoO2,70) und σ-Phase MoO2. Erhitzt man zwischen 600 und 650°, so tritt als neue Phase die β-Phase Mo8O23 auf; erhitzt man Gemische derselben Zusammensetzung zwischen 650 und 700°, so resultiert als weitere Phase die β′Phase Mo9O26. Selten wird eine weitere Phase, die γ′-Phase, vermutlich eine polymorphe Modifikation der γ-Phase, beobachtet.Die Versuche werden durch röntgenographische Untersuchungen, Messungen des spezifischen Widerstands und durch mikroskopische Beobachtungen ausgewertet. Die chemischen Eigenschaften und der Wert des spezifischen Widerstands ergeben eine starke Verwandtschaft von MoO3 zu Mo8O23; letzteres hat wie MoO3 hohen elektrischen Widerstand und zeigt auch im chemischen Charakter salzartiges Verhalten. Ebenso verwandt ist Mo9O26 mit Mo4O11, die beide mehr metallischen Charakter haben (Halbleiter).Grünlich bis hellblau gefärbte Sublimate von MoO3 enthalten Mo8O23 in kolloider Dispersion. Mo9O26 entsteht nie rein, es zersetzt sich bereits bei der Darstellungstemperatur. Ein Verfahren zur Reindarstellung von Mo9O26 wird angegeben. Mo8O23 wandelt sich bei 690° in Mo9O26 um, bei längerem Erhitzen auf 630° kann Mo4O11 nachgewiesen werden. Mo8O23 sublimiert unter teilweiser Zersetzung. Im Vakuum beginnt Mo4O11 bei 650° sich in MoO2 und MoO3 zu zersetzen. Oberhalb 800° sind bei geeigneter Versuchsführung Hinweise für eine neue Phase (ε-) vorhanden. Bei höheren Temperaturen als den genannten zersetzen sich alle Oxyde in MoO2 und MoO3. MoO2 sublimiert bei 80stündigem Erhitzen auf 1100° zu 4,3%.Eine Übersicht über die Molybdänoxydphasen wird gegeben.

    Notes: Es wurden die bisher nicht bekannten Kieselsäure-Orthoester des Isopropyl- und Isobutylalkohols dargestellt. Durch partielle Hydrolyse wurden aus ihnen Polyester gewonnen und deren Konstitution ermittelt. Die Di- und Triester sind linear, die Tetraester cyclisch gebaut. In der Isopropylreihe wurde gezeigt, daß der Tetraester sich zu einem Oktaester, dieser weiter zu einem Ditriaester kondensiert. Dieser noch benzollösliche Polyester vom Molgewicht 3550 liefert bei thermischem Abbau unter Abspaltung von Propylen einen Halbester vom Dikieselsäuretyp der Formel (HR Si2O5)x. Die Hydrolyse der Polyester wurde messend verfolgt und als monomolekulare Reaktion erkannt. Es wurden Betrachtungen über den Reaktionsverlauf der Kieselsäurebildung bei der Hydrolyse von SiCl4 an Hand der an den Estern gewonnenen Erkenntnisse angestellt.

    Notes: Die polarographische Reduktion des Rheniums wird in neutralen, alkalischen und sauren Lösungen untersucht. Insgesamt konnten 6 Stromstufen beobachtet werden, die mit Zahlen von 1-6 bezeichnet sind. Die Reduktionspotentiale dieser 6 Stufen, die je nach der Art und Konzentration des Grundelektrolyten Schwankungen unterworfen sind, betragen für die Wellen .Zur Deutung der Wellen wird die Reduktion mit Quecksilber und Zink sowie die Elektrolyse von Kaliumperrhenatlösungen geprüft. In alkalischen, neutralen und sehr schwach sauren Lösungen erhält man die Stufen 1 und 2, entsprechend einem Reduktionsverlauf Bei mittlerer Acidität treten die Stufen 3 und 4 an Stelle von 1 und 2: Die beiden Ionen ReO′4 und Re(VII)Kation stehen miteinander in einem von der Säurekonzentration abhängigen Gleichgewicht. Bei sehr hoher Acidität weisen die Polarogramme 3 Stufen auf und man erhält folgenden Reduktionsverlauf: Analytisch verwertbar sind Stufe 1 aus alkalischer Lösung sowie die Stufen 5 und 6 aus 20 n-Schwefelsäure.

    Notes: An Hand der colorimetrischen Bestimmung von Mg-Al-Legierungen wird ein allgemein anwendbares Analysenverfahren entwickelt. Es ist für solche Fälle bestimmt, in denen die eine Komponente die Absorption der Farbverbindung der anderen beeinflußt und umgekehrt. Bei diesem Verfahren wird für beide Metalle die Abhängigkeit der Extinktion von der Menge der nachzuweisenden Komponente bei verschiedenen prozentualen Zusätzen des anderen Metalls bestimmt. Man kann so eine Schar von „Isochromaten“ gleicher Extinktion festlegen. Ermittelt man diese für zwei Indikatoren (z. B. Eriochromcyanin und Titangelb), so erhält man Eichwerte, auf Grund deren man die Zusammensetzung der zu untersuchenden Legierung ohne Kenntnis der Einwaage ermitteln kann.

    Notes: Zur Darstellung von Metallborhydriden wurde die Umsetzung von Diboran mit Kaliumhydrid im Bereich von -185° bis 200° untersucht. Bis ungefähr 100° ergab sich keine nennenswerte Umsetzung. Bei 180-200° setzte Reaktion ein, die jedoch zum großen Teil in der thermischen Zersetzung von Diboran und Bildung hochpolymerer Borwasserstoffe bestand. Die Bildung des einfachen Kaliumborhydrids konnte in keinem Fall nachgewiesen werden. Die noch nebenbei untersuchte Reaktion von Diboran mit Natriumnitrit bzw. Amylnitrit ergab im ersteren Fall keine Umsetzung bis ungefähr 200°, im zweiten Fall lebhafte Umsetzung bereits unter Zimmertemperatur, jedoch mit kompliziertem und nicht näher untersuchtem Reaktionsverlauf.

    Notes: Es wurde die Reaktion von Natriumhydrid mit Borfluorid und Borfluorid-Ätherat unter verschiedenen Bedingungen der Temperatur und der Konzentration untersucht. Mit gasförmigem Borfluorid trat ab 180° Reaktion ein, die jedoch trotz Variation der Versuchsbedingungen zu keinem einheitlichen Reaktionsprodukt führte. Mit Hilfe von DEBYE-Aufnahmen konnte als Reaktionsprodukt Natriumfluorid neben weiteren zunächst nicht identifizierbaren Substanzen nachgewiesen werden. Bei der Einwirkung von Borfluorid-Ätherat konnte bei vorsichtiger Führung der Reaktion das primäre Anlagerungsprodukt Na(HBF3) als nahezu einziges Reaktionsprodukt erhalten werden. Einige Reaktionen des Natrium-Hydrogenotrifluoroborats wurden untersucht, so die Umsetzung mit Natriumhydrid, die zu einem stärker hydrierten Produkt und Natriumfluorid führt. Mit Hilfe der Röntgenspektren konnte gezeigt werden, daß ein Gemisch dieser Substanzen bei der Reaktion mit gasförmigem Borfluorid entsteht.

    Notes: 1Durch Umsetzung einer Yttriumchloridlösung mit verschiedenen Mengen verschieden konzentrierter Natriumfluoridlösung erhielt man Mischkristalle von β-NaYF4 mit YF3 verschiedener Zusammensetzung.2Die Dichten der verschiedenen Mischkristalle wurden gemessen.3Die Gitterkonstanten der verschiedenen Mischkristalle wurden nach der asymmetrischen Methode von Straumanis bestimmt.4β-NaYF4 nimmt bei dem beschriebenen Darstellungsverfahren bis 58 Mol-% YF3 in fester Lösung auf; das Gitter wird mit steigendem Einbau von YF3 aufgeweitet.5Die Dichte wurde für die zwei Baumöglichkeiten der Mischkristalle für alle Präparate unter Benutzung der Analysen- und Gitterkonstantenwerte berechnet.6Aus Vergleich von berechneten und beobachteten Dichten ergab sich, daß bei den Mischkristallen vollkommenes Kationenteilgitter vorliegt und daß Anionen in die Oktaederlücken eingelagert sind.7Für beide Baumöglichkeiten wurden die Röntgenintensitäten berechnet. Ein Vergleich von beobachteten und berechneten Intensitäten bei dem an YF3 reichsten Mischkristall bestätigte ebenfalls das Vorliegen eines vollkommenen Kationenteilgitters mit Anioneneinlagerung in die größten Gitterlücken.8Für den an YF3 reichsten Mischkristall wurden die Atome auf die Punktlagen der Raumgruppe O5h-Fm3m verteilt.

KUHN für ideale Kautschuke gestattet es, eine Bestimmung der annähernden Molekülgröße für das polymere Phosphornitrilchlorid, den sogenannten anorganischen Kautschuk durchzuführen.

    Notes: Durch gemeinsames Tempern der entsprechenden Sulfide und Halogenide des dreiwertigen Antimons und Wismuts unter Luftabschluß wurden Kristalle folgender Thiohalogenide dargestellt: Sb4S5Cl2, SbSBr, SbSJ, BiSCl, BiSBr und BiSJ.Die Präparate kristallisieren rhombisch-holoedrisch mit vier Molekülen in der Elementarzelle und sind außer Sb4S5Cl2 nadelig ausgebildet; sie gehören zur Raumgruppe D162h (Pnam). Metall, Schwefel und Halogen der nadeligen Thiohalogenide liegen je auf einer vierzähligen Punktlage (c) mit den Koordinaten x, y, 1/4; x, y, 3/4; 1/2 + x, 1/2 - y, 1/4; 1/2 - x, 1/2 + y, 3/4.Mit Hilfe der Intensitäten ausgesuchter Interferenzen auf Goniometeraufnahmen nach Weissenberg-Böhm konnten für die sechs kristallographisch unbestimmten Parameter jedes nadeligen Thiohalogenids passende Werte gefunden werden.Die vorgeschlagene Struktur wird beschrieben, mit der Morphologie der Kristalle in Beziehung gebracht und mit der Struktur des Grauspießglanzes und Wismutglanzes verglichen. Die Morphotropie zwischen den Oxyhalogeniden des Wismuts und den Thiohalogeniden des Antimons und Wismuts wird besprochen.Die Untersuchung wird an den Seleno- und Tellurohalogeniden fortgesetzt.

    Notes: Durch Umsetzen von gasförmigem SO2 mit gasförmigem NH3 wird SO2 · NH3 dar gestellt. Die Hydrolyse der bei verschiedenen Temperaturen bereiteten Produkte wird untersucht. Dabei ergibt sich, daß sich SO2 unter dem Einfluß des Ammoniaks leicht disproportioniert; S4+ geht in Schwefel der Oxydationsstufen 0, +2 und +6 über. Nur die bei sehr tiefen Temperaturen dargestellten Stoffe liefern bei der Umsetzung mit Wasser quantitativ HSO′3 und NH4. Bei Zimmertemperatur hergestelltes SO2 · NH3 gibt bei der Hydrolyse bereits auch S3O″6, SO″4 und S2O″3. Gewinnt man SO2 · NH3 bei höheren Temperaturen, oder erhitzt man das Produkt nachträglich bis auf 80°, so kann man Amidosulfonat und Imidosulfonat, N4S4, elementaren Schwefel und N2S4 erhalten.

    Notes: Es werden die Raman-Spektren mitgeteilt von Dimethyl-, Methyläthyl-, Diäthyl-, Di-n-propyl-, Di-i-butyl- und Phenylmethyl-nitrosamin, außerdem von Nitrosophenylhydroxylamin (Kupferron). Zur Ausdeutung des Spektrums des einfachsten Vertreters, des Dimethylnitrosamins, wird eine Berechnung des Spektrums durchgeführt. Die darauf gegründete Zuordnung der beobachteten Frequenzen wird gestützt durch Lösungmittelbeeinflussung und durch den Vergleich mit den Spektren höherer Homologer und mit dem ähnlichen Nitrosohydroxylamin. Alle Ergebnisse bestätigen den weitgehenden mesomeren Ausgleich der beiden möglichen Grenzstrukturen. Weiterhin lassen sich detaillierte Aussagen über Änderungen der Bindekräfte durch Änderungen der Umgebung der Nitrosamin-Gruppe machen.

    Notes: Die Bildungsbedingungen von Triazido-triammin-kobalt aus ammoniakreicheren Azido-amminen werden untersucht und je eine Darstellungsmethode mit fast quantitativer Ausbeute aus Diaquo-tetramminsalz und aus nichtkomplexen Co(II)-salzen wird angegeben.Die, je nach Habitus und Größe, grünen oder blauen Kristalle des Nichtelektrolyten lösen sich sehr wenig aber mit intensiv grüner Farbe in Wasser, Aceton und Dioxan.Auf Grund von Bildungs- und Umwandlungsreaktionen wird der Substanz die trans-Konfiguration zugeschrieben.Reine, wässerige Lösungen sind viel unbeständiger als jene der Azido-pentammin und der Diazido-tetrammin-salze. Sie erleiden stets gleichzeitig nebeneinander Aquotisierung und Hydrolyse. In sauren Lösungen im Dunkeln ist die Aquotisierung die beherrschende Reaktion, in neutralen Lösungen im U.V.-reichen Licht die Hydrolyse. Lösungen, die überschüssige Azidionen und Ammonsalze enthalten, sind auffallend stabil.Die Substanz ist schlagempfindlicher als die ammoniakreichoren Azido-amminsalze und knallt unter Umständen schon beim Reiben unter Wasser.

    Notes: Die Zusammensetzung von Bodenkörper und Gasphase im System Si, SiO, SiO wird untersucht. Danach werden die SiO-Drucke gemessen, die sich bei 1050 bis 1200° C über Si und SiO2 als Bodenkörper einstellen. Die Druckmessung erfolgt mit Hilfe der Effusionsmethode. Die Fehlerquellen dieses Verfahrens werden kurz behandelt und berücksichtigt.Aus den gemessenen SiO-Drucken wird die Bildungswärme und die Normalentropie des gasförmigen Siliciummonoxyds abgeleitet.

    Notes: Jod reagiert mit elementarem Selen unter Bildung kettenförmiger Molekeln, deren Enden durch Jod abgesättigt sind: J-Se … Se-J. Die dadurch hervorgerufene Verkleinerung der Molekelgröße des hochpolymeren geschmolzenen Selens bedingt eine starke Viskositätserniedrigung. Die Viskosität von Selen-Jod-Mischungen wird im Temperaturbereich von 150-350° C gemessen. Aus den Meßergebnissen wird unter Verwendung der von FLORY an linear polymerisierten organischen Substanzen gefundenen Beziehung log η = a √Z(Z = Kettenlänge) die Molekelgröße im amorphen schwarzen Selen durch Extrapolation zu etwa 100 Selenatomen ermittelt.

    Notes: Cis- und trans-Diazido-tetrammin-kobalt(III)-salze werden aus Diaquo-tetramminsalzen und Natriumazid nach einem Verfahren dargestellt, das die gleichzeitig gebildeten beiden Stereoisomeren von vornherein getrennt, fast rein und in bester Ausbeute liefert.13 Salze werden reinst, in Form von fast schwarzen, stark glänzenden Kristallen dargestellt, beschrieben, ihre molaren Löslichkeiten bestimmt und ihr chromatographisches Verhalten geprüft.Die ungewöhnlich intensiv gefärbten Lösungen (cis-Salze braun-violettrot und trans-Salze ultramarinblau) tauschen im Gegensatz zu Azido-pentammin-salzen in saurer Lösung ihre Azidreste gegen Wasser aus (Aquotisierung). Neutrale Lösungen sind in dieser Hinsicht fast so beständig wie die von Azido-pentammin-salzen.Entsprechend langwelligerer Lage und Erhöhung der Lichtabsorptionsmaxima sind Diazido-tetrammin-salze noch lichtempfindlicher als Azido-pentammin-salze. Die photolytische Reaktion ist analog jener der Azido-pentammin-salze (Hydrolyse), findet aber im Gegensatz zu diesen, wenn auch bei gewöhnlicher Temperatur sehr langsam, schon etwas im Dunkeln statt.Diazido-tetrammin-salze sind also sowohl in bezug auf die Photolyse (Hydrolyse) als auch die Aquotisierung instabiler als Azido-pentammin-salze.Beim Eindampfen ammonchloridhaltiger Lösungen disproportionieren Diazidotetrammin-salze zu Azido-pentammin-salzen und Triazido-triammin-kobalt.Die thermische Stabilität der festen Salze wird bis zu 250° geprüft. Bei Temperaturen über 70° (bzw. 100°) erfolgt kontinuierliche Zersetzung in komplizierter Weise. Bei höherer Temperatur verknallen die Azide und Jodide, letztere infolge vorheriger Bildung von Jodstickstoff. Unter dem Hammer detonieren nur die Azide und Perchlorate.

    Notes: Es wird eine neue Bildungsweise für Hyponitrite beschrieben, die primär auf eine Disproportionierung des Hydroxylamins in NH3 und HNO zurückgeht, wobei Nitroxyl sich teilweise zu Hyponitrit dimerisiert. Es wird ferner gezeigt, daß die Entstehung aller wesentlichen Zersetzungsprodukte des Hydroxylamins auf Folgereaktionen primär gebildeten Nitroxyls zurückzuführen sind.

    Notes: In Fortsetzung unserer Untersuchungen über Chalkogenohalogenide des dreiwertigen Antimons und Wismuts1) wurden Kristalle folgender Selenohalogenide durch gemeinsames Tempern von Selenid und Halogenid unter Luftabschluß dargestellt: SbSeBr, SbSeJ, BiSeCl, BiSeBr und BiSeJ. Die Präparate kristallisieren in rhombisch holoedrischen Nadeln. BiSeCl gehört der Raumgruppe D12h (Pmmm) an und hat 12 Moleküle in der Elementarzelle. SbSeBr, SbSeJ, BiSeBr und BiSeJ gehören zur Raumgruppe D162h (Pnam) und haben vier Moleküle in der Zelle. Metall, Selen und Halogen liegen je auf einer vierzähligen Punktlage (c) mit den Koordinaten x, y, ¼ x̄, ȳ, ¾; ½ + x, ½-y, ¼; ½-x, ½ + y, ¾. Diese vier Selenohalogenide sind mit den zugehörigen Thiohalogeniden1) isotyp. Für BiSeBr wurden in der gleichen Weise, wie sie bei den Thiohalogeniden angegeben wurde1), für die sechs kristallographisch unbestimmten Parameter passende Werte gesucht. Sie sind denjenigen von BiSBr sehr ähnlich.Sb2Se3 kristallisiert in rhombisch holoedrischen Nadeln und gehört zur Raumgruppe D162h (Pbnm) mit vier Molekülen in der Elementarzelle. Die beiden Sb und die drei Se liegen je auf einer vierzähligen Punktlage (c) mit den Koordinaten x, y, ¼; x̄, ȳ, ¾; ½ - x, ½ + y, ¼; ½ + x, ½ - y, ¾.Sb2Se3 ist mit dem Grauspießglanz Sb2S32) isotyp. Die zehn kristallographisch unbestimmten Parameter von Sb2Se3 liegen denjenigen von Sb2S3 sehr nahe.

    Notes: In der Weiterentwicklung der Diagramme der Lösungsgleichgewichte des Systems Na2Cl2, K2Cl2, MgCl2, MgSO4, H2O nach Van't Hoff und D'ANS werden neue Diagramme gebracht, aus denen die absoluten Werte der 4 Salzgehalte an beliebigen Punkten der Sättigungsflächen abgelesen werden können. Zwei Gehalte sind durch das Achsensystem und die beiden anderen Gehalte durch ein Netz von Linien gleichen Gehalts festgelegt. Die Diagramme umfassen auch die bei der Verarbeitung der Kalirohsalze besonders interessierenden metastabilen Existenzgebiete. Berechnungen isothermer und polythermer Lösungs- und Kristallisationsvorgänge auch in metastabilen Gebieten können an Hand dieser neuen Diagramme besonders einfach durchgeführt werden.

    Notes: Es wird das Gleichgewicht des Zerfalls von dimerem Eisen(III)-chloriddampf in monomeren Dampf untersucht. Gearbeitet wird statisch unter erheblichem Chlordruck um den Zerfall in Eisen(II)-chlorid zu verhindern. Als Nullinstrument für die Druckmessung wird ein Manometer mit geschmolzenem Kochsalz verwandt.Aus den Messungen ergibt sich die Entropie des monomeren Dampfes bei 932° K und einem Druck von 1 ata zu 105,7 cl. Die berechneten Konstanten stimmen mit den gemessenen gut überein. Die Zerfallswärme beträgt bei 932° K 32,13 kcal je Umsatz oder Mol dimeren Dampfes.
