    Description: We demonstrate a room-temperature semiconductor-based photodetector where readout is achieved using a resonant radio-frequency (RF) circuit consisting of a microstrip split-ring resonator coupled to a microstrip busline, fabricated on a semiconductor substrate. The RF resonant circuits are characterized at RF frequencies as function of resonator geometry, as well as for their response to incident IR radiation. The detectors are modeled analytically and using commercial simulation software, with good agreement to our experimental results. Though the detector sensitivity is weak, the detector architecture offers the potential for multiplexing arrays of detectors on a single read-out line, in addition to high speed response for either direct coupling of optical signals to RF circuitry, or alternatively, carrier dynamics characterization of semiconductor, or other, material systems.

    Description: 〈p〉Ruminants are the only extant mammalian group possessing bony (osseous) headgear. We obtained 221 transcriptomes from bovids and cervids and sequenced three genomes representing the only two pecoran lineages that convergently lack headgear. Comparative analyses reveal that bovid horns and cervid antlers share similar gene expression profiles and a common cellular basis developed from neural crest stem cells. The rapid regenerative properties of antler tissue involve exploitation of oncogenetic pathways, and at the same time some tumor suppressor genes are under strong selection in deer. These results provide insights into the evolutionary origin of ruminant headgear as well as mammalian organ regeneration and oncogenesis.〈/p〉

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉ABSTRACT〈/div〉The integral equation method (IEM) and differential equation methods have been widely applied to provide numerical solutions of the electromagnetic (EM) fields caused by inhomogeneity for the controlled-source EM method. IEM has a bounded computational domain and has been well-known for its efficiency, whereas differential equation methods are commonly used for complex geologic models. To use the advantages of the two types of approaches, a hybrid method is developed based on the combination of IEM and the edge-based finite-element method (vector FEM). In the hybrid scheme, Maxwell’s differential equations of the secondary electric fields in the frequency domain are derived for a volume with boundary placed slightly away from the inhomogeneity. The vector FEM is applied to solve Maxwell’s differential equations, and a system of linear equations for the secondary electric fields can be derived by the minimum theorem. The secondary electric fields on the boundary are represented by IEM in terms of the secondary electric fields inside the inhomogeneity. The linear equations from substituting the boundary values into the vector FEM linear equations then can be solved to obtain the secondary electric fields inside the inhomogeneity. The secondary electric fields at receivers are calculated by IEM based on the secondary electric field solutions inside the inhomogeneity. The hybrid algorithm is verified by comparison of simulated results with earlier works on canonical 3D disc models with a high accuracy. Numerical comparisons with two conventional IEMs demonstrate that the hybrid method is more accurate and efficient for high-conductivity contrast media.〈/span〉

    Description: Seed coat color is determined by the type of pigment deposited in the seed coat cells. It is related to important agronomic traits of seeds such as seed dormancy, longevity, oil content, protein content and fiber content. In Brassica napus , inheritance of seed coat color is related to maternal effects and pollen effects (xenia effects). In this research we isolated a mutation of yellow seeded B. napus controlled by a single Mendelian locus, which is named E mbryonal C ontrol of Y ellow seed coat 1 ( Ecy1 ). Microscopy of transverse sections of the mature seed show that pigment is deposited only in the outer layer of the seed coat. Using Illumina Hisequation 2000 sequencing technology, a total of 12 GB clean data, 116 x coverage of coding sequences of B. napus , was achieved from seeds 26 d after pollination (DAP). It was assembled into 172,238 independent transcripts, and 55,637 unigenes. A total of 139 orthologous genes of Arabidopsis transparent testa ( TT ) genes were mapped in silico to 19 chromosomes of B. napus . Only 49 of the TT orthologous genes are transcribed in seeds. However transcription of all orthologs was independent of embryonal control of seed coat color. Only 55 genes were found to be differentially expressed between brown seeds and the yellow mutant. Of these 55, 50 were upregulated and five were downregulated in yellow seeds as compared to their brown counterparts. By KEGG classification, 14 metabolic pathways were significantly enriched. Of these, five pathways: phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, cyanoamino acid metabolism, plant hormone signal transduction, metabolic pathways, and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, were related with seed coat pigmentation. Free amino acid quantification showed that Ala and Phe were present at higher levels in the embryos of yellow seeds as compared to those of brown seeds. This increase was not observed in the seed coat. Moreover, the excess amount of free Ala was exactly twice that of Phe in the embryo. The pigment substrate chalcone is synthesized from two molecules of Ala and one molecule of Phe. The correlation between accumulation of Ala and Phe, and disappearance of pigment in the yellow seeded mutant, suggests that embryonal control of seed coat color is related with Phe and Ala metabolism in the embryo of B. napus .

    Description: Despite much attention, history of sheep ( Ovis aries ) evolution, including its dating, demographic trajectory and geographic spread, remains controversial. To address these questions, we generated 45 complete and 875 partial mitogenomic sequences, and performed a meta-analysis of these and published ovine mitochondrial DNA sequences ( n = 3,229) across Eurasia. We inferred that O. orientalis and O. musimon share the most recent female ancestor with O. aries at approximately 0.790 Ma (95% CI: 0.637–0.934 Ma) during the Middle Pleistocene, substantially predating the domestication event (~8–11 ka). By reconstructing historical variations in effective population size, we found evidence of a rapid population increase approximately 20–60 ka, immediately before the Last Glacial Maximum. Analyses of lineage expansions showed two sheep migratory waves at approximately 4.5–6.8 ka (lineages A and B: ~6.4–6.8 ka; C: ~4.5 ka) across eastern Eurasia, which could have been influenced by prehistoric West–East commercial trade and deliberate mating of domestic and wild sheep, respectively. A continent-scale examination of lineage diversity and approximate Bayesian computation analyses indicated that the Mongolian Plateau region was a secondary center of dispersal, acting as a "transportation hub" in eastern Eurasia: Sheep from the Middle Eastern domestication center were inferred to have migrated through the Caucasus and Central Asia, and arrived in North and Southwest China (lineages A, B, and C) and the Indian subcontinent (lineages B and C) through this region. Our results provide new insights into sheep domestication, particularly with respect to origins and migrations to and from eastern Eurasia.

    Description: An experimental investigation of the steam flowing across a horizontal tube bundle with liquid falling film was conducted to simulate flow characteristics in a large desalination plant. Experiments were conducted at pressure ranging from 12 kPa to 31 kPa with the corresponding saturated steam temperature of 50 °C to 70 °C and the falling film spray density of 0.02 kg·m -1 ·s -1 to 0.08 kg·m -1 ·s -1 . The influence of the spray density, saturated temperature and tube bundle geometry structure on steam pressure drop was illustrated. The results indicate that the pressure drop increased with increasing spray density, but decreased with increasing saturated temperature. The pressure drop at the maximum spray density of 0.08 kg·m -1 ·s -1 can be three times that in spray density of 0.02 kg·m -1 ·s -1 and the pressure drop at 50 °C is almost twice that at 70 °C.
