Beschreibung: The magnitude of the previously observed effect associated with laminated composites - i.e., that a coupling exists between extension and bending if the plies are not balanced in number and fiber orientation - is investigated for buckling and vibration of doubly curved monocoque plates and shells of positive and negative Gaussian curvature. In addition, the effect of stacking sequence is examined. Solutions are presented which provide a means of simply and economically assessing the magnitude of the coupling and stacking effects for various composite materials and geometric configurations.

Beschreibung: Discussion of a large NASA-sponsored digital computer program for static and dynamic analysis of structures with linear or nonlinear material properties. The program fits to perform buckling analysis, vibration mode analysis of conservative or damped systems, frequency response analysis, and transient response analysis on the IBM 360, UNIVAC 1108, and CDC 6600 computers. It also provides automatic generation of several types of loads such as gravity loads and thermal strain loads, plots of deformed and nondeformed structures, and the choice of alternate analysis methods such as direct or modal formulations of dynamic problems. The program is intended primarily for large problems involving hundreds of thousands of degrees of freedom. A flexible Executive System is provided to facilitate the addition of new functional capabilities to the program.

Beschreibung: Prediction of the shear flow around bodies impulsively set into motion at a uniform velocity. Information is presented on the local wall shear stress, velocity distribution, steady flow times, and thermal response for wedge flows where local flow acceleration occurs. The essential features of the flow field are found to be describable by the approximate series expansion method of Goldstein and Rosenhead (1936). This method would appear to be useful in rapidly calculating the viscous drag on the forward face of various shaped bodies where local flow acceleration occurs.

Beschreibung: The framework of a new method is outlined for treating creep-fatigue behavior of metals. Inelastic strain-ranges are partitioned into the components of (1) completely reversed plasticity, (2) tensile plasticity reversed by compressive creep, or tensile creep reversed by compressive plasticity, and (3) completely reversed creep. Each of these components is shown to be related to cyclic life by a Manson-Coffin type power-law equation. A linear life fraction rule is used to combine the damaging effects of the individual components enabling the prediction of life. Test results are presented for a 2.25 Cr-1 Mo steel as well as limited information for a Type 316 stainless steel.

Beschreibung: A finite element method is formulated for determining the transient response of a box-type structure to a traveling, arbitrarily shaped pressure wave. The method is illustrated by considering an example of practical concern - the sonic boom. The acceleration-time histories of a closed box are compared with those obtained experimentally from a simulated boom. Satisfactory agreement is obtained with only four rectangular elements per individual face and a simplified loading of the box.

Beschreibung: Recent determination of the elastic moduli of hydroxyapatite by ultrasonic methods permits a re-examination of the Voigt or parallel model of the elastic behavior of bone, as a two phase composite material. It is shown that such a model alone cannot be used to describe the behavior of bone. Correlative data on the elastic moduli of dentin, enamel and various bone samples indicate the existence of a nonlinear dependence of elastic moduli on composition of hard tissue. Several composite models are used to calculate the bounds on the elastic behavior of these tissues. The limitations of these models are described, and experiments to obtain additional critical data are discussed.

Beschreibung: The state of the art, criteria, and recommended practices for the theoretical and experimental analyses of discontinuity stresses and their distribution in metallic pressure vessels for space vehicles are outlined. The applicable types of pressure vessels include propellant tanks ranging from main load-carrying integral tank structure to small auxiliary tanks, storage tanks, solid propellant motor cases, high pressure gas bottles, and pressurized cabins. The major sources of discontinuity stresses are discussed, including deviations in geometry, material properties, loads, and temperature. The advantages, limitations, and disadvantages of various theoretical and experimental discontinuity analysis methods are summarized. Guides are presented for evaluating discontinuity stresses so that pressure vessel performance will not fall below acceptable levels.

Beschreibung: An equation governing the prior to failure crack propagation is proposed. For a rate-sensitive solid containing two-dimensional crack and subject to the tensile mode of fracture, the differential equations are integrated numerically for the loads increasing monotonically in time. The resulting integral curves sigma = sigma(l) and l = l(t), i.e. load vs. crack length and length vs. time, indicate that the growth of cracks in the subcritical range is strongly rate dependent. The fatigue growth, viewed as a sequence of slow growth periods, is simulated on an EAI 380 analogue computer. The fourth power law proposed by Paris is confirmed only within a certain range of high-cycle fatigue propagation and for a rate-insensitive solid. For a more pronounced rate dependency, induced by the viscosity of a solid and/or in the proximity of the final instability point, the growth is markedly enhanced.

Beschreibung: Several criteria that may be used to evaluate the merits of some of the existing techniques for the dynamic analysis of large structures which involve division into substructures or components are examined. These techniques make use of component displacement modes to synthetize global systems of generalized coordinates and, for that reason, they have come to be known as modal synthesis or component mode methods. Two techniques have been found to be particularly useful - i.e., the modal synthesis method with fixed attachment modes, and the modal synthesis method with free attachment modes. These two methods are treated in detail, and general flow charts are presented for guidance in computer programming.

It is shown that, depending on the value of a parameter which is a function of the elastic constants and the thickness of the stiffener, the system is either regular or quasi-regular. A complete numerical example is given for which the strength of the stress singularity and the contact stresses are tabulated.

Solutions of this problem presented in the literature have been obtained using semiinverse techniques whereas the solution given here is obtained in a systematic step-by-step manner.

Beschreibung: A general theory of elastoplastic flow is formulated for work-hardening materials that may be both anisotropic and compressible. Because the theory is quasi-linear, it may be cast in terms of integral equations and the result is an extended form of Somigliana's identity. When these relations are evaluated on the boundary of a solid, their dimensionality is reduced. Previous experience with simpler materials shows that arbitrary problems may be solved in a direct manner.

Beschreibung: Equations describing the stress field and velocity field occurring in a circular cylindrical shell at plastic collapse are derived corresponding to stress states lying on each face of a yield surface for a uniform shell of material obeying the Tresca yield condition. They are then applied to the case of a shell under combined axisymmetric loadings (moment, shear force, and axial force) at one end and uniform internal or external pressure on the lateral surface. For a sufficiently long shell, complete solutions are obtained for a fixed far end, and for a certain range of values of axial force and pressure, they are obtained for a free far end. All the solutions are represented by either closed form or by quadratures. It is shown that in many cases the radial velocity field is proportional to the shear force.

Beschreibung: A solution is obtained from a simplified approach for the problem of the motion of two fragments driven into a vacuum after rupture of a container filled with gas. Following rupture, the two container fragments are driven in opposite directions. From the separation developed between the moving fragments, the originally contained gas escapes to the vacuum, perpendicular to the direction of motion of the fragments, and with locally sonic velocity. The present solution removes two restrictions of an earlier similar approach: (1) the speed of the gas within the original volume (and consequently, by inference, that of the fragments) is small relative to the sonic escape velocity, and (2) the volume between the separating fragments while they are accelerating undergoes negligible change from the original volume.

Beschreibung: The state of stress in a cylindrical shell containing a circular cutout was determined for axial tension, torsion, and internal pressure loading. The solution was obtained for the shallow shell equations by a variational method. The results were expressed in terms of a nondimensional curvature parameter which was a function of shell radius, shell thickness, and hole radius. The function chosen for the solution was such that when the radius of the cylindrical shell approaches infinity, the flat-plate solution was obtained. The results are compared with solutions obtained by more rigorous analytical methods, and with some experimental results. For small values of the curvature parameter, the agreement is good. For higher values of the curvature parameter, the present solutions indicate a limiting value of stress concentration, which is in contrast to previous results.

Beschreibung: Linear elastic treatment of fracture is considered applicable for net section stress up to about 0.8 the uniaxial tensile yield stress. Crack front plastic yield is still small enough to be viewed and treated as a small perturbation to the local crack front elastic stress field. Assuming these same circumstances and adopting the same point of view, an approach is presented for incorporating the nonlinear effects of small scale crack front plastic yield and slow crack extension in determination of the energy release rate and fracture toughness. Deviation from linearity of the load-displacement record in a fracture toughness test offers a quantifiable measure of these effects and is used to calculate the energy release rate. Fracture toughness values for one-eight inch thick 7075-T6 center cracked aluminum sheet are compared with uncorrected values and with values obtained by the Irwin method of plasticity correction.

The only information required to obtain the estimates is the member variability, in the form of second-order properties, and the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the mean system. It has also been established for the systems studied by means of Monte Carlo estimates that the specification of second-order properties is an adequate description of member variability.

Beschreibung: With highly complex structures, it is sometimes desirable to derive a dynamic model of the system from experimental vibration data. This paper presents algorithms for synthesizing the mass and stiffness matrices from experimentally derived modal data in a way which preserves the physical significance of the individual mass and stiffness elements. The synthesizing procedures allow for the incorporation of other mass and stiffness data, whether empirical or based on the analyst's insight. The mass and stiffness matrices are derived for a cantilever beam example and are compared with those obtained using earlier techniques.

Beschreibung: A theory is developed to predict eigenvalue and eigenvector uncertainty in large dynamic models. The uncertainty is based on physical property uncertainty and should not be confused with numerical roundoff, although the method can be extended to include the latter. The theory, when implemented on a computer, is used to analyze the uncertainties in frequencies and mode shapes based on uncertainties in mass, stiffness, modulus of elasticity, etc. The method incorporates a linear statistical model which is quite adequate for handling property uncertainties of 10% or more. The model is not limited to small systems but uses certain statistical assumptions as well as selective matrix manipulations to keep the size of all matrix operations to within the number of degrees of freedom of the system. Examples are given for two longitudinal vibration problems, and the results are supported by a Monte Carlo analysis.

Beschreibung: Simplified dynamic models were applied in a study of vibration in a high-speed railroad car. The mathematical models used were a four-degree-of-freedom model for vertical responses to vertical rail inputs and a ten-degree-of-freedom model for lateral response to lateral or rolling (cross-level) inputs from the rails. Elastic properties of the passenger car body were represented by bending and torsion of a uniform beam. Rail-to-car (truck) suspensions were modeled as spring-mass-dashpot oscillators. Lateral spring nonlinearities approximating certain complicated truck mechanisms were introduced. The models were excited by displacement and, in some cases, velocity inputs from the rails by both deterministic (including sinusoidal) and random input functions. Results were obtained both in the frequency and time domains. Solutions in the time domain for the lateral model were obtained for a wide variety of transient and random inputs generated on-line by an analog computer. Variations in one of the damping properties of the lateral car suspension gave large fluctuations in response over a range of car speeds for a given input. This damping coefficient was significant in reducing lateral car responses that were higher for nonlinear springs for three different inputs.

Beschreibung: The analysis of hypervelocity impact of particles on a detector in space, with flow and shock penetration through fluid, plastic, and elastic zones was studied. The original paper and computer program on this topic is presented. Improvements in the program for the study of the formation of a cone of debris are discussed. The truncated apex of the cone is at the hole formed by the penetration of an initially spherical rock through a thin plate. A solution for the penetration of the thin plate was sought.

Beschreibung: A theoretical analysis is presented of the elastic shearing of a trapezoidally corrugated plate with discrete attachments at the ends of the corrugations. Numerical results on effective shear stiffness, stresses, and displacements are presented for selected geometries and end-attachment conditions. It is shown that the frame-like deformation of the cross-sections, which results from the absence of continuous end attachments, can lead to large transverse bending stresses and large reductions in shearing stiffness.

Beschreibung: The results of a series of experiments performed in the evaluation of nondestructive tensile testing of chip and wire bonds are presented. Semiconductor devices were subjected to time-temperature excursions, static-load life testing and multiple pre-stressing loads to determine the feasibility of a nondestructive tensile testing approach. The report emphasizes the importance of the breaking angle in determining the ultimate tensile strength of a wire bond, a factor not generally recognized nor implemented in such determinations.
