Description: The effect of subcritical crack growth on the geometry dependence of nonlinear fracture toughness parameters was studied by comparing the toughness values for different specimen geometries at the onset of subcritical crack growth and at the initiation of unstable crack propagation. Center-cracked thin sheet specimens of 2024-T3 and 7075-T6 aluminum alloys were tested by varying the specimen length L, width w, and crack length-to-width ratio c/w. When the onset of unstable crack propagation was selected as the critical point, the nonlinear energy toughness and the R curve toughness increased with increasing w and decreasing L and c/w. However, when the onset of subcritical crack growth was taken as the critical point, energy toughness and the linear toughness values were independent of these geometrical variables.

Description: The question of load biaxiality strongly affecting almost all of the characteristics of brittle fracture behavior of a cracked body is investigated. Results of research published piecemeal over the years by the authors have shown that the stress and displacement fields, the elastic strain energy density, and the maximum shear stress near the crack tip are all altered by loads applied parallel to the crack, as are the angle of initial crack extension, the strain energy of the entire body, the fracture load, and the rate of fatigue crack growth. A synthesis and summary of this research is presented showing the shortcomings inherent in both Griffith's global energy rate theory for crack instability and Irwin's local crack-tip stress intensity theory for fracture toughness. In both theories only the tensile load perpendicular to the crack influences fracture behavior of the body.

Description: An overview is presented of the fundamental aspects of and recent developments in fracture mechanics. Reference is made to linear elastic fracture mechanics including the state of stresses and displacements in the vicinity of cracks, effects of crack geometry and orientation on stress intensity factors, energy balance of Griffith, Irwin's stress intensity concept, and linear elastic fracture mechanics testing for fracture toughness. Other aspects of this paper include the non-linear behavior of materials and their influence on fracture mechanics parameters, consideration of viscoelasticity and plasticity, non-linear fracture toughness parameters as C.O.D., R-curve and J-integral, and a non-linear energy method, proposed by Liebowitz. Finite element methods applied to fracture mechanics problems are indicated. Also, consideration has been given to slow crack growth, dynamic effects on K(IC), Sih's criterion for fracture, Lee and Liebowitz's criterion relating crack growth with plastic energy, and applications of fracture mechanics to aircraft design. Suggestions are offered for future research efforts to be undertaken in fracture mechanics.

Description: The nonlinear and dynamic response of composite structures to impact loading conditions was investigated. The convergence of both finite element and finite difference solution procedures was investigated with this configuration. The response of composite beams and plates to impact were examined. Fundamental data on the indentation and flexural response of both plate and beam geometry were collected. Numerical analyses were extended to the study of circular plates subjected to impact loading. Further work was done in modeling the response to simulated impact loading through careful modeling of the momentum transfer from impactor to target. The modeling methodology and solution procedures were well tested and verified. A computer program for the solution of circular plate problems was developed and is under testing.

Description: Experimental findings on the effects of biaxial loading on fracture toughness, non-self-similar growth problems, fatigue crack propagation, and subcritical growth properties are reviewed, together with the fundamental analytical solutions for problems of crack in an elastic solid under biaxial loading. Basic asymptotic field representations, and some stress-intensity factor solutions are presented. The effects of biaxial loading on problems involving plastic deformation are illustrated with recent numerical results. Early asymptotic solutions for a nonlinear elastic solid are discussed with emphasis on the solution of problems with significant plastic deformation, and on stable crack growth. A brief survey of the applications literature, and recommendations for future studies are included.
