    Notes: This paper begins with a brief historical review of the field of biomechanics applied to oral implantology. Based on the current status of development, a set of generalized biomechanical requirements are presented covering analytical, experimental and clinical considerations. The current biomechanics status and requirements are then used to derive a three part role for the biomechanics of oral implantology. The expected benefits to be gained from implementing this role are outlined.

    Description: The magnitude of the previously observed effect associated with laminated composites - i.e., that a coupling exists between extension and bending if the plies are not balanced in number and fiber orientation - is investigated for buckling and vibration of doubly curved monocoque plates and shells of positive and negative Gaussian curvature. In addition, the effect of stacking sequence is examined. Solutions are presented which provide a means of simply and economically assessing the magnitude of the coupling and stacking effects for various composite materials and geometric configurations.

    Description: Truss components are considered, taking into account composite truss structures, truss analysis, column members, and truss joints. Beam components are discussed, giving attention to composite beams, laminated beams, and sandwich beams. Composite frame components and composite membrane components are examined. A description is given of examples of flat membrane components and examples of curved membrane elements. It is pointed out that composite structural design and analysis is a highly interactive, iterative procedure which does not lend itself readily to characterization by design or analysis function only.-

    Description: The human need for safe and effective dental implants is well-recognized. Although many implant designs have been tested and are in use today, a large number have resulted in clinical failure. These failures appear to be due to biomechanical effects, as well as biocompatibility and surgical factors. A unified approach is proposed using multidisciplinary systems technology, for the study of the biomechanical interactions between dental implants and host tissues. The approach progresses from biomechanical modeling and analysis, supported by experimental investigations, through implant design development, clinical verification, and education of the dental practitioner. The result of the biomechanical modeling, analysis, and experimental phases would be the development of scientific design criteria for implants. Implant designs meeting these criteria would be generated, fabricated, and tested in animals. After design acceptance, these implants would be tested in humans, using efficient and safe surgical and restorative procedures. Finally, educational media and instructional courses would be developed for training dental practitioners in the use of the resulting implants.

    Description: Starting with mission definitions and constraints for the NASA proposed Shuttle Active Microwave Experiments (SAMEX) and Free Flying Imaging Radar Experiment (FIREX), Hughes Aircraft Company has compiled and studied the technology available for slotted waveguide planar array antennas suitable for spaceborne SAR application. Antenna performance is derived, and fabrication techniques are discussed. Mission requirements will always lead to an aperture subdivided into waveguide modules, thereby validating a module definition for other mission building blocks. Finally, a specific design is proposed for a SAMEX mission using the modules as RF aperture building blocks, resulting in a (nominal) 15.1 meter by 5.5 meter extensile dual polarized L-, C-, and X-band planar array with an associated extensile graphite/epoxy support structure. Antenna development begin with a fabrication method development study involving a representative portion of an antenna module.

    Description: A method is described for adhering bone to the surface of a rigid substrate such as a metal or resin prosthesis using an improved surgical bone cement. The bone cement has mechanical properties more nearly matched to those of animal bone and thermal curing characteristics which result in less traumatization of body tissues and comprises a dispersion of short high modulus graphite fibers within a bonder composition including polymer dissolved in reactive monomer such as polymethylmethacrylate dissolved in methylmethacrylate monomer.
