Description / Table of Contents: This book provides a compact self-contained introduction to the theory and application of Bayesian statistical methods. The book is accessible to readers having a basic familiarity with probability, yet allows more advanced readers to quickly grasp the principles underlying Bayesian theory and methods. The examples and computer code allow the reader to understand and implement basic Bayesian data analyses using standard statistical models and to extend the standard models to specialized data analysis situations. The book begins with fundamental notions such as probability, exchangeability and Bayes' rule, and ends with modern topics such as variable selection in regression, generalized linear mixed effects models, and semiparametric copula estimation. Numerous examples from the social, biological and physical sciences show how to implement these methodologies in practice. Monte Carlo summaries of posterior distributions play an important role in Bayesian data analysis. The open-source R statistical computing environment provides sufficient functionality to make Monte Carlo estimation very easy for a large number of statistical models and example R-code is provided throughout the text. Much of the example code can be run ``as is'' in R, and essentially all of it can be run after downloading the relevant datasets from the companion website for this book. Peter Hoff is an Associate Professor of Statistics and Biostatistics at the University of Washington. He has developed a variety of Bayesian methods for multivariate data, including covariance and copula estimation, cluster analysis, mixture modeling and social network analysis. He is on the editorial board of the Annals of Applied Statistics.

Description / Table of Contents: Based on the analysis of literature sources and the results of field research work carried out for many years, this monograph considers the regularities of forest-regeneration processes in felled areas of the most widespread forest types in the Priob pinewoods of the West-Siberian forest-steppe zone, and related with mesorelief, herbaceous soil-covering, sources of sowing. The regularities and distinguishing features of forest regeneration processes in slash-fire felled areas in comparison with typical felled areas have been described and the prospects of natural forest regeneration in felled areas have been determined in the monograph. The optimum methods of artificial forest regeneration, by using large tree seedlings from improved seeds, have been also considered and proposed. The book is intended for a wide circle of sylviculturists, ecology specialists, students, postgraduates and teachers of forestry and biological professions of technical secondary and higher schools.

Description / Table of Contents: [...]

Description / Table of Contents: Der Fahrtabschnitt MSM 12/2 vom 17.6. bis 13.7.2009 mit FS Maria S. Merian bestand aus reflexionsseismischen und geologischen Untersuchungen der Eirik Drift, einer Sedimentstruktur südlich Grönlands.

Description / Table of Contents: The Arctic has been affected by the ongoing climate and environmental change more than other regions of the earth. For the next century, increasing rates of change have been predicted. Only a few Arctic meteorological records date back to the 19th century. Hence paleoclimate archives are of particular importance for the reconstruction and assessment of past climate variability and its causes. In this thesis, glacier and ground ice from the Russian Arctic, more precisely an ice core from Akademii Nauk ice cap (Severnaya Zemlya) and syngenetic ice wedges from Oyogos Yar (Dmitrii Laptev Strait), both covering the Late Holocene, were studied to contribute new paleoenvironmental information. Both archives were mainly analyzed by using stable water isotopes. This thesis demonstrates the great potential of Akademii Nauk ice core for the high resolution reconstruction of regional climate and environmental variability. In particular, its delta-O-18 data can be used as proxy for temperature in the Western Eurasian Arctic revealing significant changes on different timescales. The 20th century was the warmest period of the last two millennia, with an absolute double-peaked maximum around AD 1920 - 1940. Of particular interest are rapid decadal-scale climate changes, which occured in the 15th and 16th century as well as at about AD 1900, most probably caused by internal dynamics of the Arctic climate system. Deuterium excess d provides valuable information on the participation of regional moisture in the precipitation feeding Akademii Nauk ice cap, which is linked to the regional sea ice extent. Decreasing delta-O-18 and sea salt ion values due to the increasing ice cap altitude prove the growth of Akademii Nauk ice cap in the Late Holocene. A new approach, comprising high resolution sampling and radiocarbon dating, was used to gain paleoenvironmental information from the syngenetic Oyogos Yar ice wedges. Even through no continuous records could be obtained due to still inconsistent dating results, paleoclimatic information could be extracted. Ice wedge delta-O-18 data show evidence that winters in the last decades were the warmest in the Late Holocene. These were accompanied by changes in the moisture sources, related to changes in the atmospheric circulation patterns and / or sea ice dynamics. Envisaged follow-up research will continue the work on the studied objects and will facilitate new insights into the paleoenvironmental history of the Eurasian Arctic.

Description / Table of Contents: Trajektorien beschreiben die von Luftpaketen zurückgelegten Wege.

Description / Table of Contents: Recent progress of marine ecology in polar regions is amazing. It includes the discoveries of unique sea-ice communities, high biodiversity of the polar bottom fauna, as well as the life strategies of planktonic organisms, seals and penguins. Modern research focuses on the impacts of global warming on polar ecosystems. Those studies cover all scales from molecular biology to global biogeochemical cycles. This book on marine polar biology contains 35 research reports and reviews by German scientists and their international partners spanning over two decades of biological research in the Arctic and Antarctic waters. Each article is worth reading on its own, and together they provide a comprehensive picture of the state-of-the-art knowledge of polar seas ecology.

Description / Table of Contents: This volume provides a comprehensive, up-to-date account of how the physical and biological environment of the Antarctic continent and Southern Ocean has changed from Deep Time until the present day. It also considers how the Antarctic environment may change over the next century in a world where greenhouse gas concentrations are much higher than occurred over the last few centuries. The Antarctic is a highly coupled system with non-linear interactions between the atmosphere, ocean, ice and biota, along with complex links to the rest of the Earth system. Inpreparing this volume our approach has been highly cross-disciplinary, with the goal of reflecting the importance of the continent in global issues, such as sea level rise, the separation of natural climate variability from anthropogenic influences, food stocks, biodiversity and carbon uptake by the ocean. One hundred experts in Antarctic science have contributed and drafts of the manuscript were reviewed by over 200 scientists. We hope that it will be of value to all scientists with an interest in the Antarctic continent and the Southern Ocean, policy makers and those concerned with the deployment of observing systems and the development of climate models.

Description / Table of Contents: As we discover more about the role of the ocean in global changes and identify the effects of global change on the ocean, understanding its chemical composition and processes becomes increasingly paramount. However, understanding these processes requires a wide range of measurements in the vast ocean, from the sea surface to deep-ocean trenches, from the tropics to the poles. Practical Guidelines for the Analysis of Seawater provides a common analytical basis for generating quality-assured and reliable data on chemical parameters in the ocean. A source of practical know-how, the book covers sampling and storage, analytical methodology, and guidelines and procedures for quality assurance. It presents analytical methods with the step-by-step procedures that help practitioners implement these methods successfully into the laboratory, making them instantly applicable without consulting further literature. The book also contains essential information for developing or improving quality control and quality assurance programs in the laboratory. It includes the availability and measurement of standard reference materials, blank estimation and correction, control of recoveries, and statistical evaluation of quality assurance data. Analytical chemistry is a very active and fast moving area. Despite the development of innovative new analytical techniques for chemical trace element research, obtaining reliable data at ultra-trace levels remains a formidable challenge. A complete and practical guide, this book delineates proven methods that consistently yield reproducible data in routine work.
