Notes: We have studied the electrical properties and microstructure of fluorine-doped BaTiO3 ceramics. The samples were prepared using a classical ceramic technology that involved the calcination of intimately mixed powders of BaCO3, TiO2, and BaF2. When the samples were sintered in untreated ambient air, the fluorine from the sample reacted with water vapor and formed gaseous HF. To prevent this hydrolysis of the fluorine, we sintered the samples in dried air. The fluorine-doped BaTiO3 ceramics sintered in a dry atmosphere showed microstructures and electrical properties typical of donor-doped BaTiO3. The samples containing up to 0.3 mol% of fluorine were coarse-grained, semiconducting, and displayed a remarkable PTCR effect. In contrast, the samples with a higher fluorine concentration were fine grained and insulating. A SIMS elemental mapping of the samples showed that the fluorine was distributed throughout the microstructure of the semiconducting samples; however, the fluorine concentration was enriched at grain boundaries and in the BaTi2O5 intergranular phase.

Notes: Abstract Thermal decomposition and electrical conductivity of oxide cathode emission materials used for cathode ray tubes (CRTs) have been studied under different heat treatment conditions for commercial sprayed cathode systems based on barium-strontium carbonate precursors. Conversion of the carbonate precursor commenced at temperatures above approximately 700 K in vacuum, evidenced by increases in conductivity, however, the rate of the conversion reaction increased dramatically as the temperature was increased. The corresponding chemical and microstructural changes have also been investigated by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), with multiple decomposition stages identified corresponding to the conversion of the carbonate precursor and separate activation steps associated with the reaction of barium oxide with the Mg and Al activating agents in the nickel cathode substrate. © 2000 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract: Consider a group of products sharing common parts and assemblies. The products in question we call a product family, and the common elements, the platform. In this paper, we present a method for designing product platforms and the derived family that takes into consideration both the technical performance requirements as well as the cost of the product family. The design of a platform-based product family is formulated as a general optimization problem in which the advantages of designing a common platform must be balanced against the constraints of the individual product variants and constraints of the family as a whole. This optimization approach forms the basis for a practical implementation as an interactive, team-based negotiation model for designing a family of interplanetary spacecraft based on a common platform. The approach is used to consider and specify different subsystems that could be made common to all the missions. It is also used to evaluate the impact of those platform design decisions on the performance of the product family, and thus be able to select from among feasible platform designs.

Notes: Abstract In order to make use of the available strength of strong fibres, the metal matrix of a composite will have to undergo plastic deformation. The effect that this will have on the fatigue behaviour and damping capacity is discussed, with reference to aluminium reinforced with silica fibres and with stainless steel wires.

Notes: Abstract Ductile yielding of the Dugdale type and brittle fracture in the Barenblatt sense are investigated for regions at the ends of a periodic array of semi-infinite parallel cracks in a stretched orthotropic sheet. Direct transform methods are used to obtain the Wiener-Hopf equation. Factorization of the kernel and several other steps of the analysis can be completed in closed form for a dense class of elastic constants, and asymptotic forms are derived for other cases. The solutions depend upon the finite spacing between cracks and have characteristics which have been observed in experiments: 1) At high load levels the yield zone of the ductile material grows in jumps; 2) For a brittle material the allowable load level increases as the speciman size decreases.

Notes: Abstract The reinforcement of metallic matrices with stronger, stiffer ceramic fibres is one approach which is currently being pursued in an effort to develop materials which will withstand the demanding conditions imposed by present-day engineering requirements. The gains in tensile strength which might be obtained by suitable combination of fibres and metal have been widely speculated upon [1] and, recently, experimental verification of some of these predictions has been obtained [2]. As yet, however, little attention has been directed towards assessing the limitations of such composite systems, isolating their causes and attempting to overcome them.

Notes: Abstract Analysis is presented of the steady propagation of a crack through a layer of viscous fibers which join two orthotropic elastic half-planes. If the fibers behave linearly, then the stress components at the crack tip are singular, and the strength of the singularity depends upon the crack speed and upon elastic and viscous parameters of the problem. Consideration of more realistic nonlinear behavior near the crack tip results in a finite stress system. Some particular simple models are postulated and analyzed.

Notes: Abstract A microstructural study of the phases developed during the laser nitriding of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy by, using a CL5 continuous CO2 laser with a spinning beam and concentration of 80% nitrogen, was undertaken. The vertical sections, perpendicular to the melt track were examined by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while specimens for X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photospectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy/selected area electron diffraction (TEM/SAED), were taken parallel to the melt track. In this way the variation in microstructure as a function of depth from the laser treated surface, was studied. This supplemented XRD and XPS investigations undertaken previously. Two zones were identified. Zone 1, within 50 μm of the surface, contained well defined dendrites of fcc TiN0.8, plus hcp TiN0.3 and hcp α′Ti. Zone 2, below 50 μm, consisted of needles of hcp α′Ti. From a consideration of the hardness profiles in Zone 2, it is suggested that at the top of the zone, the α′ phase is, in fact, a solid solution containing 3–4% N, which decreased to 〈1% N at the bottom of the zone. The TEM/SAED study permitted the three phases fcc TiN0.8, hcp TiN0.3 and hcp α′Ti to be identified through a combination of morphology and SAED patterns. This also showed that the fccTiN0.8 contained fringes, which were considered to be stacking fault fringes and allowed this phase to be readily recognized in the TEM. The presence of stacking faults may be associated with the high nitrogen concentration of 80% used for the laser nitriding in this work.
