Abstract
Ductile yielding of the Dugdale type and brittle fracture in the Barenblatt sense are investigated for regions at the ends of a periodic array of semi-infinite parallel cracks in a stretched orthotropic sheet. Direct transform methods are used to obtain the Wiener-Hopf equation. Factorization of the kernel and several other steps of the analysis can be completed in closed form for a dense class of elastic constants, and asymptotic forms are derived for other cases. The solutions depend upon the finite spacing between cracks and have characteristics which have been observed in experiments: 1) At high load levels the yield zone of the ductile material grows in jumps; 2) For a brittle material the allowable load level increases as the speciman size decreases.
