Notes: The infrared absorption of Ir and IrSi thin films on Si substrates has been determined by transmission and reflection measurements over the wavelength range 2.5–25 μm. Detailed analysis of the dependence of absorption at 4 μm on film thickness indicates that a thin boundary layer with lower absorption than Ir is present at the Ir/Si interface and that such a layer with lower absorption than IrSi is present at the IrSi/Si interface. The existence of the boundary layers has been confirmed by the detection of oxygen at the interfaces by Auger analysis. Absorption and Auger measurements give no evidence of boundary layer formation at Pt/Si or PtSi/Si interfaces.

Notes: A new zone-melting-recrystallization (ZMR) configuration with enhanced radiative heating has been developed for preparing silicon-on-insulator (SOI) films. With this configuration, in which the sample is positioned above the movable heater with the SOI film facing downward, subboundary-free 0.5-μm-thick SOI films are obtained over a much wider range of experimental parameters than with the conventional ZMR configuration. The characterization of these films by defect etching, optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy shows that the principal defects are isolated threading dislocations with a density of ∼106 cm−2. It should be possible to improve the material quality still further by optimizing experimental conditions for the new configuration.

Notes: We have studied the morphology and crystallographic angular discontinuities of subboundaries and defect trails in zone-melting-recrystallized Si films. These subboundaries and defect trails, which originate at the interior corners of the faceted solidification front, are classified into seven types. Evidence is presented that in-plane stress due to temperature gradients plays a major role in causing such defects. Various schemes for entraining subboundaries and defect trails are described.

Notes: Smooth layers of tungsten silicide have been formed on silicon substrates by deposition of a tungsten film, As+ ion implantation through the film to produce ion-beam mixing, and rapid thermal annealing. This process has been used to form tungsten silicide selectively in patterned openings etched in the SiO2 film on oxidized Si wafers, without lateral silicide growth. Rapid thermal annealing results in the activation of the As implanted in the Si substrate, without significant redistribution, to form shallow n+-p junctions with good electrical properties.

Notes: Recent manufacturing of advanced ceramics has developed phase transformation and cracks tilted or bridged to enhance ceramic-inherent toughness. However, main crack and near-tip microcracks interaction is another prominent means in toughening of the ceramic materials. In this study, mechanics of discrete model combined with alternative iterating numerical technique is developed and applied in assessment of main–microcrack interaction. Consequences of main–microcrack interaction can either shield or amplify the resulting main crack stress intensity factor, which accounts for the increase or decrease of ceramic toughness. Numerical outcomes show good agreement with the available solutions in the literatures; in addition results also reveal that the toughness shielding or amplification is dependent on the type of loadings as well as location/orientation of the microcrack. Nevertheless, residual normal stress plays an important role in shielding/amplification region trade-off. This work may provide a useful quantitative tool in ceramic design and a valuable insight into main–micro interaction phenomenon.

Notes: Abstract A finite element method is used to solve the full Navier-Stokes and energy equations for the problems of laminar combined convection from three isothermal heat horizontal cylinders in staggered tube-bank and four isothermal heat horizontal cylinders in in-line tube-bank. The variations of surface shear stress, pressure and Nusselt number are obtained over the entire cylinder surface including the zone beyond the separation point. The predicted values of total, pressure and friction drag coefficients, average Nusselt number and the plots of velocity flow fields and isotherms are also presented.

Notes: Abstract Cubic spline collection numerical method has been developed to determine two dimensional natural convection in a partitioned enclosure heated from below. The both sides of impermeable partition are considered to have continuity in heat flux and temperatures. The governing equations are solved with aid of the SADI procedure. Parametric studies of the effects of the partition and Rayleigh number on the fluid flow and temperature fields have been performed. Results show that the location of the partition and Rayleigh number have a significant influence on the flow and heat transfer characteristics.

Notes: Summary This paper presents numerical results for the steady-state mixed convection in micropolar fluids along a vertical wavy surface. The problem has been formulated by a simple trnasposition theorem, and the spline alternating-direction implicit method has been applied to solve the governing momentum, angular momentum and energy equations. The influence of the micropolar parameters (R and λ), the amplitude-wave length ratio and the Gr/Re2 number on the skin-friction coefficient and Nusselt number have been studied. Results demonstrate that the skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt number consist of a mixture of two harmonics in micropolar fluids and in Newtonian fluids. As the vortex viscosity parameter (R) increases, the heat transfer rate decreases but the skin friction increases. In addition, when the spin gradient viscosity parameter (λ) increases, the heat transfer rate and the skin friction decreases. However, the heat transfer rate of a micropolar fluid is smaller than a Newtonian fluid, but the skin friction of a micropolar fluid is larger than a Newtonian fluid under all circumstances.

Notes: Summary This study presents the numerical calculations of the fluid flow and turbulent heat transfer characteristics of hot flow over a sudden-expansion with cold air base mass injection. The turbulent governing equations are solved by a control-volume-based finite-difference method with power-law scheme, the well knownk-ε model, and its associate wall function to describe the turbulent behavior. The velocity and pressure terms of momentum equations are solved by the SIMPLE (Semi-Implicid Method for Pressure-Linked Equation) method. In this study non uniform staggered grids are used. The parameters interested include the inlet Reynolds number (Re), inlet temperature (T0), and the injection flow rate (Q). The numerical results show that the reattachment lengths are reasonably predicted with a maximum discrepancy within 9.1%. It also shows that the base mass injection suppresses the horizontal velocity and turbulence intensity. In these high temperature heat transfer characteristics, the heat transfer coefficient increased with increasing inlet temperature and inlet Reynolds number, but decreased with increasing injection flow rate of the cooling air.
