    Description: The transport, degassing and atmospheric release of halogens from active volcanism on Earth have been the 12 focus of increasing interest over the last few decades, and have recently been the subject of the 1st workshop 13 on “Halogens in volcanic systems and their environmental impacts” that was held in December of 2007 at 14 Yosemite Lodge in Yosemite National Park, California. As an introduction to this Chemical Geology special 15 issue, collecting contributions from many of the participants at the workshop, we review here recent 16 advances in this field, including experimental and theoretical investigations of halogen behaviour in volcanic 17 and related magmatic systems. We discuss previous research on several aspects of halogen geochemistry, 18 including halogen abundances in the mantle and magmas on Earth; the effects of halogens on phase 19 equilibria and melt viscosities; their partitioning between melt and fluid phase(s) upon decompression, 20 cooling and crystallisation of magmas in the ^ Earth's crust; and their final atmospheric release as volcanic 21 gases. The role of halogens in the genesis of hydrothermal systems and in the transport of ore-forming metals 22 is also reviewed, and we discuss our current understanding of atmospheric processing of volcanic halogens in 23 both the troposphere and stratosphere, and their consequent impacts. In spite of these recent advancements, 24 our current understanding of halogen geochemistry at active volcanoes is still far too fragmentary, and the 25 key questions that require answers from future research are summarised in our conclusions.

    Description: Tropical south-western Pacific temperatures are of vital importance to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), but the role of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the growth of the GBR since the Last Glacial Maximum remains largely unknown. Here we present records of Sr/Ca and d18O for Last Glacial Maximum and deglacial corals that show a considerably steeper meridional SST gradient than the present day in the central GBR. We find a 1–2 °C larger temperature decrease between 17° and 20°S about 20,000 to 13,000 years ago. The result is best explained by the northward expansion of cooler subtropical waters due to a weakening of the South Pacific gyre and East Australian Current. Our findings indicate that the GBR experienced substantial meridional temperature change during the last deglaciation, and serve to explain anomalous deglacial drying of northeastern Australia. Overall, the GBR developed through significant SST change and may be more resilient than previously thought.

    Notes: Abstract The species and distribution of nematodes on the kelp Macrocystic integrifolia Bory, in the Bamfield region of Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada were examined. Nine species (belonging to six families) of nematodes were found on the kelp blades. Three species (Monhystera disjuncta, M. refringens and Prochromadorella neapolitana) comprised 91–99% of the nematode fauna and occurred in all monthly samples from July 1978 to November 1979. The three dominant species exhibited seasonal density differences. P. neapolitana occurred mostly in the summer, M. refringens abundance peaked from July to October and M. disjuncta was relatively abundant throughout the year. The other species contributed little to the overall abundance and distribution patterns. All three species occurred in greatest abundance on the lower and middle blades of M. integrifolia in the deep end of the kelp bed. Very few individuals occurred on the upper blades. Nematode distribution on M. integrifolia appeared to be related to blade age and the associated food sources on the blade.

    Notes: Abstract Tourmaline alteration and high boron contents are typical features of the magmatic-hydrothermal systems of the Bolivian tin province. The average boron content in melt inclusions of quartz phenocrysts from tin porphyry systems is 225 ppm (1σ-variation range: 110–420 ppm; n=12) and suggests a magmatic boron input to the hydrothermal tin systems, and not shallow post-magmatic leaching of boron from pelitic country rocks. Boron data from melt inclusions correlate positively with cesium, rubidium and arsenic, and negatively with lithium, titanium and zirconium, and define magmatic fractionation trends. The generally high B, As, Cs and Li contents in melt inclusions suggest involvement of pelitic source lithologies undepleted in these fluid-mobile components, i.e. first-cycle metamorphic rocks. Magmatic fractionation modified the trace-element contents within a one-log-unit range. Bulk-rock Nd isotope data (ɛNd−5 to −10) are in agreement with the dominantly intracrustal geochemical signature of the Bolivian tin porphyry systems, but also imply a variable but minor mantle input. The metallogeny of the tin belt is likely a consequence of intracrustal melting of Lower Paleozoic pelitic and slightly carbonaceous source material, combined with an extended magmatic evolution. The long-lived thermal preparation of the root zones of the silicic systems is provided by mafic magma which also leaves a chemical imprint in the form of the hybrid dacitic bulk composition of the tin porphyry systems.
