Description: FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT), which acts in parallel with the meristem-identity gene LEAFY (LFY) to induce flowering of Arabidopsis, was isolated by activation tagging. Like LFY, FT acts partially downstream of CONSTANS (CO), which promotes flowering in response to long days. Unlike many other floral regulators, the deduced sequence of the FT protein does not suggest that it directly controls transcription or transcript processing. Instead, it is similar to the sequence of TERMINAL FLOWER 1 (TFL1), an inhibitor of flowering that also shares sequence similarity with membrane-associated mammalian proteins.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Kardailsky, I -- Shukla, V K -- Ahn, J H -- Dagenais, N -- Christensen, S K -- Nguyen, J T -- Chory, J -- Harrison, M J -- Weigel, D -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1999 Dec 3;286(5446):1962-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Plant Biology Laboratory, The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, 10010 North Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla, CA 92037, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10583961" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Agricultural biotechnology is limited by the inefficiencies of conventional random mutagenesis and transgenesis. Because targeted genome modification in plants has been intractable, plant trait engineering remains a laborious, time-consuming and unpredictable undertaking. Here we report a broadly applicable, versatile solution to this problem: the use of designed zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs) that induce a double-stranded break at their target locus. We describe the use of ZFNs to modify endogenous loci in plants of the crop species Zea mays. We show that simultaneous expression of ZFNs and delivery of a simple heterologous donor molecule leads to precise targeted addition of an herbicide-tolerance gene at the intended locus in a significant number of isolated events. ZFN-modified maize plants faithfully transmit these genetic changes to the next generation. Insertional disruption of one target locus, IPK1, results in both herbicide tolerance and the expected alteration of the inositol phosphate profile in developing seeds. ZFNs can be used in any plant species amenable to DNA delivery; our results therefore establish a new strategy for plant genetic manipulation in basic science and agricultural applications.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Shukla, Vipula K -- Doyon, Yannick -- Miller, Jeffrey C -- DeKelver, Russell C -- Moehle, Erica A -- Worden, Sarah E -- Mitchell, Jon C -- Arnold, Nicole L -- Gopalan, Sunita -- Meng, Xiangdong -- Choi, Vivian M -- Rock, Jeremy M -- Wu, Ying-Ying -- Katibah, George E -- Zhifang, Gao -- McCaskill, David -- Simpson, Matthew A -- Blakeslee, Beth -- Greenwalt, Scott A -- Butler, Holly J -- Hinkley, Sarah J -- Zhang, Lei -- Rebar, Edward J -- Gregory, Philip D -- Urnov, Fyodor D -- England -- Nature. 2009 May 21;459(7245):437-41. doi: 10.1038/nature07992. Notes: Abstract The bromination of crotonic acid by N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) is first order with respect to crotonic acid and zero order with respect toNBS and the rate of the reaction changes linearly with hydrogen ion concentration. The thermodynamic parameters have also been calculated.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Vergleichende Daten über Glutathionperoxidase (GSH-Px)-Aktivität der Erythrozyten, Serum-Cholesterin und Serum-Fettsäuremuster von indischen Emigranten und Dänen werden dargestellt.
Notes: Summary A comparative data on erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, serum cholesterol and serum fatty acid pattern between Indian immigrants and Danes have been presented. The erythrocyte GSH-Px activity in the Indian immigrants has been found to be significantly increased as compared to that in the Danish group when t-buthylhydroperoxide was used as a substrate. Also a significant correlation (R ≤ 0.9) was found in the GSH-Px activities in the Indian group with the three peroxides, viz., hydrogen peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide and t-butylhydroperoxide, used. This correlation was, however, missing in the Danish group. Serum cholesterol was found to be significantly lower in the Indian group as compared to the Danes. Also total serum fatty acid patterns between the two groups differed considerably.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A micro method for the determination of olefinic unsaturation in organic compounds has been developed. 2–10 mg sample dissolved in acetic acid is reacted with a known excess of N-bromosuccinimide at room temperature and the excess reagent is back titrated iodometrically. The maximum deviation in the results is ±2%. The compounds containing electron withdrawing groups close to the C=C site are not reactive and hence could not be determined by this procedure.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A relatively simple procedure for the isolation and determination of the prostaglandins present in human seminal fluid is described. It involves preliminary chromatographic purification of these compounds from the major non-prostaglandin impurities followed by their total elution in one solvent (one-step elution). The prostaglandins thus obtained were almost free from other lipids and were further resolved into prostaglandin-groups and individual prostaglandins by repeated thin-layer chromatography. Data are also presented for prostaglandin contents of fresh semen samples from five individuals and results compared with those from the stored samples.
