    Description: We restudy the issue of cross-correlations between broad-line and jet emission variations, and aim to locate the position of a radio (and gamma-ray) emitting region in a jet of active galactic nuclei. Considering the radial profiles of the radius and number density of clouds in a spherical broad-line region (BLR), we derive new formulae connecting the jet-emitting position R jet to the time lag ob between broad-line and jet emission variations, and the BLR radius. Also, formulae are derived for a disc-like BLR and a spherical shell BLR. The model-independent flux randomization/random subset selection method is used to estimate ob . For 3C 120, positive lags of about 0.3 yr are found between the 15 GHz emission and the Hβ, H and He ii 4686 lines, including broad-line data in a newly published paper, indicating that the line variations lead the 15 GHz ones. Each of the broad-line light curves corresponds to a radio outburst. R jet  = 1.1–1.5 parsec (pc) is obtained for 3C 120. For 3C 273, a common feature of negative time lags is found in the cross-correlation functions between light curves of radio emission and the Balmer lines, as well as Lyα 1216 and C iv 1549 lines. R jet  = 1.0–2.6 pc is obtained for 3C 273. The estimated R jet is comparable for 3C 120 and 3C 273, and the gamma-ray-emitting positions will be within ~1–3 pc from the central engines. Comparisons show that the cloud number density and radius radial distributions and the BLR structures have only negligible effects on R jet .

    Description: The regulatory mechanisms underlying bud breaking (scale leaf elongation) and flowering in the lateral flower buds of Japanese pear ( Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai ‘Kosui’) are unknown. To more fully characterize these processes, we treated pear trees with different amounts of chilling initiated at different times. Chilling for ~900 h at 6 °C always induced bud breaking (scale elongation in ≥70% lateral flower bud) when provided between October and February, whereas chilling provided earlier (between October and December) was less effective on flowering (floret growth and development) than later chilling and the flowering rate increased with longer chilling durations. During chilling, the expression of pear DAMs ( PpMADS13-1 , 13-2 and 13-3 ) in lateral flower buds decreased as chilling accumulated irrespective of the timing of chilling. In addition, pear TFL1 ( PpTFL1-1a ) in the lateral flower buds was expressed at higher levels when the time interval for chilling was earlier. On the other hand, during forcing at 15 °C after chilling, the expression pattern of all three PpMADS13 genes was similar among the treatments, and the expression levels seemed lower in the treatment where scale leaves of the lateral flower bud elongated faster, whereas pear FT ( PpFT2a ) was expressed at higher levels in the buds whose flower clusters elongated more vigorously during forcing. From these results, we infer that flowering time may be mediated via the balance of flowering-related genes FT and TFL1 , whereas bud breaking may be regulated via the DAM genes in Japanese pear.

    Description: Nature marble is widely used in architecture, but generally it is irregular in shape. It is necessary to pack regular shapes such as circular and rectangular into irregular marble slabs, with an optimistic way to save material. However, when the arbitrary region is a concave set, it is difficult to recognize its characteristics if the circular item is in the region. An angle bisector method was proposed to avoid overlapping inside circles and ensure the circle is contained in the marble slab. Meanwhile, the mathematical model for packing circle items in an arbitrary region was established based on the heuristic algorithm. The experimental results show that the approach is effective and it can be used not only in a convex region, but also in a concave one.

    Description: This paper mainly focuses on the sound directivity of the angular contact ceramic ball bearing applied to the ceramic motorized spindle. The nonlinear dynamic model is proposed with consideration of axial load, nonlinear hydrodynamic forces and interaction between balls and cage. Then the sub-source decomposition method is introduced for the establishment of an acoustic radiation model. Sound pressure levels along the circumferential direction are used as evaluation indexes of sound directivity, and the sound directivity with axial loads at different rotation speed are analyzed. Results indicate that the sound directivity tends to be obvious with the increase of rotation speed, and the axial loads have significant influence on the deviation angles of directivity performance. This work provides insights into monitoring the acoustic performance of ceramic bearings, and can guide further research and development.

    Description: Human infection associated with a novel reassortant avian influenza H7N9 virus has recently been identified in China. A total of 132 confirmed cases and 39 deaths have been reported. Most patients presented with severe pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Although the first epidemic has subsided, the presence of a natural reservoir and the disease severity highlight the need to evaluate its risk on human public health and to understand the possible pathogenesis mechanism. Here we show that the emerging H7N9 avian influenza virus poses a potentially high risk to humans. We discover that the H7N9 virus can bind to both avian-type (alpha2,3-linked sialic acid) and human-type (alpha2,6-linked sialic acid) receptors. It can invade epithelial cells in the human lower respiratory tract and type II pneumonocytes in alveoli, and replicated efficiently in ex vivo lung and trachea explant culture and several mammalian cell lines. In acute serum samples of H7N9-infected patients, increased levels of the chemokines and cytokines IP-10, MIG, MIP-1beta, MCP-1, IL-6, IL-8 and IFN-alpha were detected.     Description: We isolated three dormancy-associated MADS - box ( DAM ) genes ( MADS13-1 , MADS13-2 and MADS13-3 ) and showed regulated expression concomitant with endodormancy establishment and release in the leaf buds of Japanese pear ‘Kosui’. Comparative analysis between ‘Kosui’ and Taiwanese pear TP-85-119 (‘Hengshanli’), a less dormant pear cultivar, showed reduction of MADS13-1 expression level in ‘Hengshanli’ earlier than in ‘Kosui’ towards endodormancy release, suggesting the possible relationship between chilling requirement and MADS13-1 expression. Application of hydrogen cyanamide accelerated endodormancy release with a reduction in MADS13 expression, whereas heat treatment in autumn inhibited endodormancy establishment without induction of MADS13 expression, indicating a close relationship between the MADS13 expression pattern and endodormancy phase transitions. Moreover, both the cis -acting regulatory elements and the methylation status in the 5' upstream region of the MADS13-1 gene were not largely different between ‘Kosui’ and ‘Hengshanli’. Genomic structures of MADS13-1 from ‘Kosui’ and ‘Hengshanli’ revealed a 3218 bp insertion in the first intron of ‘Hengshanli’ that might be ascribed to the lower expression of MADS13-1tw ; however, this insertion was also found in pear genotypes with a high chilling requirement. These results indicated that the low expression of MADS13-1 in ‘Hengshanli’ towards endodormancy release could not be explained by the identified cis -acting regulatory elements, the methylation status of the putative promoter or by intron insertion.

    Description: Despite great progress in the development of nonprecious metal catalysts (NPMCs) over the past several decades, the performance and stability of these promising catalysts have not yet achieved commercial readiness for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Through rational design of the cathode catalyst layer (CCL), we demonstrate the highest reported performance for an NPMC-based membrane electrode assembly (MEA), achieving a peak power of 570 mW/cm 2 under air. This record performance is achieved using a precommercial catalyst for which nearly all pores are 〈3 nm in diameter, challenging previous beliefs regarding the need for larger catalyst pores to achieve high current densities. This advance is achieved at industrially relevant scales (50 cm 2 MEA) using a precommercial NPMC. In situ electrochemical analysis of the CCLs is also used to help gain insight into the degradation mechanism observed during galvanostatic testing. Overall, the performance of this NPMC-based MEA has achieved commercial readiness and will be introduced into an NPMC-based product for portable power applications.

    Description: 〈p〉Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are innate-like T lymphocytes that express an invariant T cell receptor (TCR), which recognizes glycolipid antigens presented on CD1d molecules. These cells are phenotypically and functionally distinct from conventional T cells. When we characterized the metabolic activity of iNKT cells, consistent with their activated phenotype, we found that they had much less mitochondrial respiratory capacity but increased glycolytic activity in comparison to naïve conventional CD4〈sup〉+〈/sup〉 T cells. After TCR engagement, iNKT cells further increased aerobic glycolysis, which was important for the expression of interferon- (IFN-). Glycolytic metabolism promoted the translocation of hexokinase-II to mitochondria and the activation of mammalian target of rapamycin complex 2 (mTORC2). Inhibiting glycolysis reduced the activity of Akt and PKC, which inhibited TCR recycling and accumulation within the immune synapse. Diminished TCR accumulation in the immune synapse reduced the activation of proximal and distal TCR signaling pathways and IFN- production in activated iNKT cells. Our studies demonstrate that glycolytic metabolism augments TCR signaling duration and IFN- production in iNKT cells by increasing TCR recycling.〈/p〉

    Description: This oceanographic synthesis focuses on the main results of the INRH's oceanographic surveys along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast of Morocco and the follow-up resulting from the treatment of satellite products for the year 2014. The objective of this study is to establish a system of operational oceanographic observations and, ultimately, numerical simulations capable of continuously monitoring trends and hydroclimatic variations at the level of the two Atlantic and Mediterranean seaboards. This document is divided into three parts: The physical oceanography component, biological oceanography component and remote sensing space component.
