Notes: Summary The methods of GPC calibration proposed by WEISS and COHN Ginsberg (1969) and by MAHABADI and O'DRISCOLL (1977) has been applied. Their restriction and a possibility to overcome it has been demonstrated.

Description / Table of Contents: Thermisch polymerisierte Proben von linearen Additionspolymeren des Bisphenol-A-Diglycidylethers (DGEBA) mit den drei unterschiedlichen Aminen, (A) Benzylamin (BA), p-Chloranilin (PCA) und Cyclohexylamin (CHA), wurden mittels Gelpermeationschromatographie (GPC) unter Verwendung von THF als Elutionsmittel untersucht.
Notes: Thermally polymerized samples of linear addition polymers of bisphenol-A-diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) and the following three different amines (A): benzylamine (BA), p-chloroaniline (PCA), and cyclohexylamine (CHA) were chromatographed by gelpermeation chromatography (GPC) using THF as eluent. The solvation effect of hydroxyl groups by THF has been taken into consideration when calibrating the system and interpreting the chromatograms. The comparison of the chromatograms suggests that the polymer with CHA is cyclized already in the range of small molecular masses (including dimers) and in an early stage of reaction. The comparison of average molecular masses of the samples as measured with independent methods - vapour pressure osmometry (VPO) and GPC - shows that the cyclization of the polymers with BA and PCA takes place to a lower extent, the latter polymer being less capable of cyclization.

Notes: The reaction of bisphenol A-diglycidyl ether (BADGE) with butane-1,4-diol (BD) in the presence of Mg(ClO4)2 leads to linear and branched oligomers. The formation ratio of these products depends on the reaction temperature. In experiments at 100°C, an epoxide consumption of up to 70% can be observed using HPLC. In this range all products show good solubility in THF, so that it is possible to follow the increasing molar mass by using SEC. A characteristic relation of the molar mass against the conversion rate is derived and SEC data of a branched product are discussed.

Notes: Polyisobutylene-graft-polystyrene (PIB-g-PSt) was synthesized by quasiliving atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene. The ATRP process was induced by an industrially produced poly-(isobutylene-co-p-methylstyrene-co-p-bromomethylstyrene) macroinitiator (PIB) in the presence of CuBr and 2,2′-bipyridine. Successful graft polymerizations were performed both in bulk and in xylene solution. Preliminary investigations indicate phase-separated morphology and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) behavior of this new graft copolymer with certain PIB/PSt ratios. These materials are able to elongate to ca. 500% of their original dimension without any irreversible deformation.

Notes: Two series of aromatic polyamides incorporating silicon together with phenylquinoxaline or with hexafluoroisopropylidene groups have been synthesized and their properties have been characterized and compared with those of related polymers. These polymers are easily soluble in polar amidic solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and dimethylformamide, and in tetrahydrofuran, and can be cast into thin, transparent films from solution. The polyamides have weight- and number-average molecular weights in the range of 10 000-40 000 and 3 000-6 000, respectively, and polydispersities in the range of 3-10. They show glass transition temperatures in the range of 236°C-275°C and decomposition temperatures above 400°C. The polymer films have low dielectric constants in the range of 3.26-3.68, and good mechanical properties (tensile strength 74-100 MPa, tensile modulus 180-386 MPa), thus being comparable with other high performance dielectrics.
