Notes: The nested primers designed to amplify a 222-base pair portion of the hemolysin gene, vvhA, were specific for all V. vulnificus strains tested. The nested PCR amplification, coupled with direct extraction of template DNA, revealed improved sensitivity sufficient for detection of 1 to 10 CFU V. vulnificus in 1 mL of seafood homogenates, and eliminated the need for enrichment culturing. Thereby, the nested PCR method achieved a broader applicability, making it effective for extensive use in identification of the pathogen in natural samples such as raw seafoods, seawater and sediments.

Notes: We report pseudodielectric function data 〈ε〉=〈ε1〉+i〈ε2〉 of ZnSexTe1−x samples grown on GaAs substrates. The data were obtained from 1.5 to 6.5 eV using spectroscopic ellipsometry. Critical-point parameters were obtained by fitting model line shapes to numerically calculated second-energy derivatives of 〈ε〉. The bowing parameters of E0, E1, and E1+Δ1 were determined and were comparable to that of E0 quoted from the literature. We observed a monotonic increase of the linewidth of the E1 gap up to x=0.85, whereas that of E1+Δ1 showed a maximum value near x=0.5. We attribute this anomalous broadening of the E1 gap to sample microstructures developed in the low-Te composition alloys. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A combined experimental and theoretical analysis of the fracture behaviour of brass/solder/brass sandwich specimens is conducted. First, the theories of interfacial fracture initiation for a ductile layer sandwiched between elastic substrates are reviewed. The fracture behaviours are then reported of brass/solder/brass sandwich specimens under various mode mixities. Additionally, the effects of solder layer thickness h and specimen lateral thickness t are presented. The effects of mode mix and plastic constraint on the failure mechanism and toughness are analysed.

Notes: Abstract A single-frame 3-D PTV algorithm was constructed to measure 3-D high-speed flows with NTSC cameras. The measurement system consists of three NTSC cameras, an optical instrument called AOM, a digital image grabber and a hosting computer. The tracking algorithm of particles' pair is based on a concept of a spatial match probability. The measurement system is used to probe the turbulent properties of the backward-facing step flow. A preliminary test of the measurement system is also made on the measurement of 3-D vectors of 36 targets on a rotating table to verify its validity. The measurement uncertainty of the system is systematically evaluated through the preliminary test. A set of virtual images is constructed by using the vectors selected randomly from the grid vectors that had been obtained by the experiment on the backward-facing step flow with the system. A performance test is made on the vector recovery using the virtual images and it is validated.

Notes: Summary Inheritance of resistance to a soybean isolate of peanut stripe virus (PStV-strain PN) was studied in three soybean varieties, AGS 129, Ankur, and PI 230971. Genetic analysis was based on necrotic, mosaic and symptomless reactions in inoculated soybeans. A single incompletely dominant gene in AGS 129 was found to confer the resistance to PStV and was tentatively designated as Pst. The homozygous parent AGS 129, possessing the genotype Pst Pst, was immune while Ankur and PI 230971, with a genotype of pst pst, were susceptible showing mosaic symptoms. The heterozygous genotype Pst pst resulting from the cross of either Ankur or PI 230971 with AGS 129 reacted with necrosis, distinctly different from either of the homozygous genotypes. This genotypic effect was confirmed through the phenotypic segregation in BC, F2, and F3.

Notes: Abstract The reaction mechanism of titanium silicide was investigated for varying amounts, of BF2 dopant on a Si-substrate. Titanium thin films were prepared by direct current sputtering on non-doped and BF2-implanted silicon wafers. The heat treatment temperatures, by rapid thermal annealing (RTA), were varied in the range 600–800 °C for 20 s. C49 TiSi2 forms at 700 °C and almost all of its phase is transformed into C54 TiSi2 with a very low resistivity value (16 μΩ cm) at 800 °C. When the amount of impurities is increased, the sheet resistance of Ti-silicides also increased while its thickness decreased. The main cause of the thickness reduction of Ti-silicide is the growth of enhanced native oxide. Dopants are chiefly redistributed in the interface between the Ti-silicide and the Si-substrate. It is believed that the formation of titanium boride increases the contact resistance during the Ti-silicide formation for samples annealed at 750 °C and 800 °C.

Notes: Abstract This paper studied the applicability of the method of caustics to anisotropic materials under Mode I and mixed-mode static-loading conditions and introduced the procedure to obtain stress-intensity factors (SIF) in anisotropic materials by the method of caustics. The mapping equations for initial and caustic curves in anisotropic materials were introduced and their computer graphical images were compared to the experimental ones to check the validity of the mapping equations proposed in this paper. The agreement between them was found to be satisfactory. Two kinds of equations to determine SIF in anisotropic materials by the method of caustics are proposed in this paper. Corroborative experiments carried out by using the orthotropic materials under various loading conditions are presented. In the case of Mode I loading condition, the SIF's obtained by this paper's methods were found to be close to the results by another method, i.e., boundary-element method (BEM). And in the case of mixed-loading condition, the SIF's by this paper and BEM show little differences, (2.2–24.4 percent) with respect to the slanted angle of crack.
