Notes: Abstract Studies of the photoluminescence spectra of Cr3+ ions in KMgF3 crystals co-doped with Cr3+ and Ni2+ ions are reported. Several crystal field sites are identified by the different R-line spectra due to the 2 E→4 A 2 transition and broadband luminescences associated with the 4 T 2→4 A 2 transitions. Cr3+ ions substituting without local charge compensation on the octahedral Mg2+ site give rise to a low temperature R line in photoluminescence at λ=702.3 nm with a radiative decaytime of 3 ms at T=14 K. At T=300 K this isotropic centre gives rise to an unpolarized broadband 4 T 2→4 A 2 emission, which results from the thermal occupancy of an excited 4 T 2 state just above the 2 E level which, at lower temperature, gives rise to emission in the R-line. Other crystal field sites are due to some Cr3+ ions having Mg2+ or K+ vacancies in nearest-neighbour positions, these vacancies being required to maintain charge neutrality in doped fluoride perovskites. The Cr3+−K+ vacancy complex results in the centre having trigonal symmetry, and low temperature, photoluminescence via R 1 and R 2 lines at 716.8 nm and 716.0 nm, respectively. Finally, Cr3+ ions having a nearest neighbour Mg2+ vacancy have tetragonal symmetry, experiencing weak crystal fields. In consequence, the 4 T 2 level lies below 2 E and the photoluminescence spectrum at low temperature takes the form of a polarized broad 4 T 2→4 A 2 band with peak at 760 nm and radiative decaytime of 54 μs.

Notes: [Auszug] In this study we have been able to isolate living phloem tissue from the petioles of the umbellifer Heracleum mantegazzianum Somm. et Lev. grown in pots for ease of handling in the laboratory. Phloem bundles were dissected apart while remaining attached to the intact plant, a technique pioneered by ...

Notes: Nitrided SiO2 thin films on Si wafers were studied by x-ray reflectivity measurements and their electron-density profiles were evaluated. Interfacial layers of the oxides were found to have densities higher than that of either crystalline Si substrates or strained interfacial layers of thermal oxides. The high density probably results from nitrogen incorporation near the interfaces. The present results suggest that strongly retarded boron penetration through nitrided gate oxides is due to their high-density interfacial layers. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fruit and stem water potentials of tomato plants were measured continuously for several days using automated psychrometers. A linear voltage displacement transducer was used to simultaneously measure diameter changes on an adjacent fruit. A strong correlation was observed between the water potential gradient of the fruit and stem, and changes in fruit diameter. Fruit diameter increased when the apoplasmic water potential gradient favoured solution flow into the fruit and fruit shrinkage occurred only when the water potential gradient was inverted. Based on our data and other published data (Ehret & Ho 1986; Lee 1989a) on phloem transport in tomato, we have concluded that low stem water potentials have an immediate and direct effect on phloem turgor; reducing the driving force for sap flow into the fruit. Since fruit water potential remained relatively constant, the diurnal variation in stem water potential was sufficient to account for the correlation with changes in fruit diameter. There are consequences with respect to predicting the accumulation of dry matter in tomato fruit.

Notes: Specular and non-specular X-ray reflectivity intensities of a (Ta/Si)60 multilayer sample were measured to characterize its interface structure. Since the multilayer has a good reflectance at its multilayer peaks, its performance as a wide-bandpass monochromator for X-ray scattering experiments of polymers has been tested.

Notes: [Auszug] Several workers3?6 have pictures of sieve plates of different species with the filamentous "p-protein" passing through the plates. Several authors have reported the diameter of these filaments to be within the range 60 Å to 240 Å. I have calculated the effect such filaments would have ...

Notes: Abstract Simultaneous measurement of the pressure potential of the phloem of F. americana made on two locations on the trunk over long periods of time showed synchronous oscillations of no fixed period during the day. The simultaneous changes in pressure in two different trees indicated environmental changes were responsible for the synchrony. The coincident changes of pressure 5 m apart on the same trunk implied that either transpiration had an immediate and direct effect upon the pressure potentials developed in the phloem because of the intimate relationship of the phloem water potential and the water potential of the adjacent transpiration stream, or factors affecting phloem loading resulted in pressure changes throughout the phloem.

Notes: Summary Inheritance of resistance to a soybean isolate of peanut stripe virus (PStV-strain PN) was studied in three soybean varieties, AGS 129, Ankur, and PI 230971. Genetic analysis was based on necrotic, mosaic and symptomless reactions in inoculated soybeans. A single incompletely dominant gene in AGS 129 was found to confer the resistance to PStV and was tentatively designated as Pst. The homozygous parent AGS 129, possessing the genotype Pst Pst, was immune while Ankur and PI 230971, with a genotype of pst pst, were susceptible showing mosaic symptoms. The heterozygous genotype Pst pst resulting from the cross of either Ankur or PI 230971 with AGS 129 reacted with necrosis, distinctly different from either of the homozygous genotypes. This genotypic effect was confirmed through the phenotypic segregation in BC, F2, and F3.
