    Description: Supermassive black holes with masses of millions to billions of solar masses are commonly found in the centers of galaxies. Astronomers seek to image jet formation using radio interferometry but still suffer from insufficient angular resolution. An alternative method to resolve small structures is to measure the time variability of their emission. Here we report on gamma-ray observations of the radio galaxy IC 310 obtained with the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes, revealing variability with doubling time scales faster than 4.8 min. Causality constrains the size of the emission region to be smaller than 20% of the gravitational radius of its central black hole. We suggest that the emission is associated with pulsar-like particle acceleration by the electric field across a magnetospheric gap at the base of the radio jet.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Aleksic, J -- Ansoldi, S -- Antonelli, L A -- Antoranz, P -- Babic, A -- Bangale, P -- Barrio, J A -- Becerra Gonzalez, J -- Bednarek, W -- Bernardini, E -- Biasuzzi, B -- Biland, A -- Blanch, O -- Bonnefoy, S -- Bonnoli, G -- Borracci, F -- Bretz, T -- Carmona, E -- Carosi, A -- Colin, P -- Colombo, E -- Contreras, J L -- Cortina, J -- Covino, S -- Da Vela, P -- Dazzi, F -- De Angelis, A -- De Caneva, G -- De Lotto, B -- de Ona Wilhelmi, E -- Delgado Mendez, C -- Dominis Prester, D -- Dorner, D -- Doro, M -- Einecke, S -- Eisenacher, D -- Elsaesser, D -- Fonseca, M V -- Font, L -- Frantzen, K -- Fruck, C -- Galindo, D -- Garcia Lopez, R J -- Garczarczyk, M -- Garrido Terrats, D -- Gaug, M -- Godinovic, N -- Gonzalez Munoz, A -- Gozzini, S R -- Hadasch, D -- Hanabata, Y -- Hayashida, M -- Herrera, J -- Hildebrand, D -- Hose, J -- Hrupec, D -- Idec, W -- Kadenius, V -- Kellermann, H -- Kodani, K -- Konno, Y -- Krause, J -- Kubo, H -- Kushida, J -- La Barbera, A -- Lelas, D -- Lewandowska, N -- Lindfors, E -- Lombardi, S -- Longo, F -- Lopez, M -- Lopez-Coto, R -- Lopez-Oramas, A -- Lorenz, E -- Lozano, I -- Makariev, M -- Mallot, K -- Maneva, G -- Mankuzhiyil, N -- Mannheim, K -- Maraschi, L -- Marcote, B -- Mariotti, M -- Martinez, M -- Mazin, D -- Menzel, U -- Miranda, J M -- Mirzoyan, R -- Moralejo, A -- Munar-Adrover, P -- Nakajima, D -- Niedzwiecki, A -- Nilsson, K -- Nishijima, K -- Noda, K -- Orito, R -- Overkemping, A -- Paiano, S -- Palatiello, M -- Paneque, D -- Paoletti, R -- Paredes, J M -- Paredes-Fortuny, X -- Persic, M -- Poutanen, J -- Prada Moroni, P G -- Prandini, E -- Puljak, I -- Reinthal, R -- Rhode, W -- Ribo, M -- Rico, J -- Rodriguez Garcia, J -- Rugamer, S -- Saito, T -- Saito, K -- Satalecka, K -- Scalzotto, V -- Scapin, V -- Schultz, C -- Schweizer, T -- Shore, S N -- Sillanpaa, A -- Sitarek, J -- Snidaric, I -- Sobczynska, D -- Spanier, F -- Stamatescu, V -- Stamerra, A -- Steinbring, T -- Storz, J -- Strzys, M -- Takalo, L -- Takami, H -- Tavecchio, F -- Temnikov, P -- Terzic, T -- Tescaro, D -- Teshima, M -- Thaele, J -- Tibolla, O -- Torres, D F -- Toyama, T -- Treves, A -- Uellenbeck, M -- Vogler, P -- Zanin, R -- Kadler, M -- Schulz, R -- Ros, E -- Bach, U -- Krauss, F -- Wilms, J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2014 Nov 28;346(6213):1080-4. doi: 10.1126/science.1256183. Description: Recent observations of supernova remnants (SNRs) hint that they accelerate cosmic rays to energies close to ~10(15) electron volts. However, the nature of the particles that produce the emission remains ambiguous. We report observations of SNR W44 with the Fermi Large Area Telescope at energies between 2 x 10(8) electron volts and 3 x10(11) electron volts. The detection of a source with a morphology corresponding to the SNR shell implies that the emission is produced by particles accelerated there. The gamma-ray spectrum is well modeled with emission from protons and nuclei. Its steepening above approximately 10(9) electron volts provides a probe with which to study how particle acceleration responds to environmental effects such as shock propagation in dense clouds and how accelerated particles are released into interstellar space.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Abdo, A A -- Ackermann, M -- Ajello, M -- Baldini, L -- Ballet, J -- Barbiellini, G -- Baring, M G -- Bastieri, D -- Baughman, B M -- Bechtol, K -- Bellazzini, R -- Berenji, B -- Blandford, R D -- Bloom, E D -- Bonamente, E -- Borgland, A W -- Bregeon, J -- Brez, A -- Brigida, M -- Bruel, P -- Burnett, T H -- Buson, S -- Caliandro, G A -- Cameron, R A -- Caraveo, P A -- Casandjian, J M -- Cecchi, C -- Celik, O -- Chekhtman, A -- Cheung, C C -- Chiang, J -- Ciprini, S -- Claus, R -- Cognard, I -- Cohen-Tanugi, J -- Cominsky, L R -- Conrad, J -- Cutini, S -- Dermer, C D -- de Angelis, A -- de Palma, F -- Digel, S W -- do Couto e Silva, E -- Drell, P S -- Dubois, R -- Dumora, D -- Espinoza, C -- Farnier, C -- Favuzzi, C -- Fegan, S J -- Focke, W B -- Fortin, P -- Frailis, M -- Fukazawa, Y -- Funk, S -- Fusco, P -- Gargano, F -- Gasparrini, D -- Gehrels, N -- Germani, S -- Giavitto, G -- Giebels, B -- Giglietto, N -- Giordano, F -- Glanzman, T -- Godfrey, G -- Grenier, I A -- Grondin, M-H -- Grove, J E -- Guillemot, L -- Guiriec, S -- Hanabata, Y -- Harding, A K -- Hayashida, M -- Hays, E -- Hughes, R E -- Jackson, M S -- Johannesson, G -- Johnson, A S -- Johnson, T J -- Johnson, W N -- Kamae, T -- Katagiri, H -- Kataoka, J -- Katsuta, J -- Kawai, N -- Kerr, M -- Knodlseder, J -- Kocian, M L -- Kramer, M -- Kuss, M -- Lande, J -- Latronico, L -- Lemoine-Goumard, M -- Longo, F -- Loparco, F -- Lott, B -- Lovellette, M N -- Lubrano, P -- Lyne, A G -- Madejski, G M -- Makeev, A -- Mazziotta, M N -- McEnery, J E -- Meurer, C -- Michelson, P F -- Mitthumsiri, W -- Mizuno, T -- Monte, C -- Monzani, M E -- Morselli, A -- Moskalenko, I V -- Murgia, S -- Nakamori, T -- Nolan, P L -- Norris, J P -- Noutsos, A -- Nuss, E -- Ohsugi, T -- Omodei, N -- Orlando, E -- Ormes, J F -- Paneque, D -- Parent, D -- Pelassa, V -- Pepe, M -- Pesce-Rollins, M -- Piron, F -- Porter, T A -- Raino, S -- Rando, R -- Razzano, M -- Reimer, A -- Reimer, O -- Reposeur, T -- Rochester, L S -- Rodriguez, A Y -- Romani, R W -- Roth, M -- Ryde, F -- Sadrozinski, H F-W -- Sanchez, D -- Sander, A -- Saz Parkinson, P M -- Scargle, J D -- Sgro, C -- Siskind, E J -- Smith, D A -- Smith, P D -- Spandre, G -- Spinelli, P -- Stappers, B W -- Stecker, F W -- Strickman, M S -- Suson, D J -- Tajima, H -- Takahashi, H -- Takahashi, T -- Tanaka, T -- Thayer, J B -- Thayer, J G -- Theureau, G -- Thompson, D J -- Tibaldo, L -- Tibolla, O -- Torres, D F -- Tosti, G -- Tramacere, A -- Uchiyama, Y -- Usher, T L -- Vasileiou, V -- Venter, C -- Vilchez, N -- Vitale, V -- Waite, A P -- Wang, P -- Winer, B L -- Wood, K S -- Yamazaki, R -- Ylinen, T -- Ziegler, M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2010 Feb 26;327(5969):1103-6. doi: 10.1126/science.1182787. Description: The Kepler mission was designed to determine the frequency of Earth-sized planets in and near the habitable zone of Sun-like stars. The habitable zone is the region where planetary temperatures are suitable for water to exist on a planet's surface. During the first 6 weeks of observations, Kepler monitored 156,000 stars, and five new exoplanets with sizes between 0.37 and 1.6 Jupiter radii and orbital periods from 3.2 to 4.9 days were discovered. The density of the Neptune-sized Kepler-4b is similar to that of Neptune and GJ 436b, even though the irradiation level is 800,000 times higher. Kepler-7b is one of the lowest-density planets (approximately 0.17 gram per cubic centimeter) yet detected. Kepler-5b, -6b, and -8b confirm the existence of planets with densities lower than those predicted for gas giant planets.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Borucki, William J -- Koch, David -- Basri, Gibor -- Batalha, Natalie -- Brown, Timothy -- Caldwell, Douglas -- Caldwell, John -- Christensen-Dalsgaard, Jorgen -- Cochran, William D -- DeVore, Edna -- Dunham, Edward W -- Dupree, Andrea K -- Gautier, Thomas N 3rd -- Geary, John C -- Gilliland, Ronald -- Gould, Alan -- Howell, Steve B -- Jenkins, Jon M -- Kondo, Yoji -- Latham, David W -- Marcy, Geoffrey W -- Meibom, Soren -- Kjeldsen, Hans -- Lissauer, Jack J -- Monet, David G -- Morrison, David -- Sasselov, Dimitar -- Tarter, Jill -- Boss, Alan -- Brownlee, Don -- Owen, Toby -- Buzasi, Derek -- Charbonneau, David -- Doyle, Laurance -- Fortney, Jonathan -- Ford, Eric B -- Holman, Matthew J -- Seager, Sara -- Steffen, Jason H -- Welsh, William F -- Rowe, Jason -- Anderson, Howard -- Buchhave, Lars -- Ciardi, David -- Walkowicz, Lucianne -- Sherry, William -- Horch, Elliott -- Isaacson, Howard -- Everett, Mark E -- Fischer, Debra -- Torres, Guillermo -- Johnson, John Asher -- Endl, Michael -- MacQueen, Phillip -- Bryson, Stephen T -- Dotson, Jessie -- Haas, Michael -- Kolodziejczak, Jeffrey -- Van Cleve, Jeffrey -- Chandrasekaran, Hema -- Twicken, Joseph D -- Quintana, Elisa V -- Clarke, Bruce D -- Allen, Christopher -- Li, Jie -- Wu, Haley -- Tenenbaum, Peter -- Verner, Ekaterina -- Bruhweiler, Frederick -- Barnes, Jason -- Prsa, Andrej -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2010 Feb 19;327(5968):977-80. doi: 10.1126/science.1185402. Description: Using data for 25,780 species categorized on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, we present an assessment of the status of the world's vertebrates. One-fifth of species are classified as Threatened, and we show that this figure is increasing: On average, 52 species of mammals, birds, and amphibians move one category closer to extinction each year. However, this overall pattern conceals the impact of conservation successes, and we show that the rate of deterioration would have been at least one-fifth again as much in the absence of these. Nonetheless, current conservation efforts remain insufficient to offset the main drivers of biodiversity loss in these groups: agricultural expansion, logging, overexploitation, and invasive alien species.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hoffmann, Michael -- Hilton-Taylor, Craig -- Angulo, Ariadne -- Bohm, Monika -- Brooks, Thomas M -- Butchart, Stuart H M -- Carpenter, Kent E -- Chanson, Janice -- Collen, Ben -- Cox, Neil A -- Darwall, William R T -- Dulvy, Nicholas K -- Harrison, Lucy R -- Katariya, Vineet -- Pollock, Caroline M -- Quader, Suhel -- Richman, Nadia I -- Rodrigues, Ana S L -- Tognelli, Marcelo F -- Vie, Jean-Christophe -- Aguiar, John M -- Allen, David J -- Allen, Gerald R -- Amori, Giovanni -- Ananjeva, Natalia B -- Andreone, Franco -- Andrew, Paul -- Aquino Ortiz, Aida Luz -- Baillie, Jonathan E M -- Baldi, Ricardo -- Bell, Ben D -- Biju, S D -- Bird, Jeremy P -- Black-Decima, Patricia -- Blanc, J Julian -- Bolanos, Federico -- Bolivar-G, Wilmar -- Burfield, Ian J -- Burton, James A -- Capper, David R -- Castro, Fernando -- Catullo, Gianluca -- Cavanagh, Rachel D -- Channing, Alan -- Chao, Ning Labbish -- Chenery, Anna M -- Chiozza, Federica -- Clausnitzer, Viola -- Collar, Nigel J -- Collett, Leah C -- Collette, Bruce B -- Cortez Fernandez, Claudia F -- Craig, Matthew T -- Crosby, Michael J -- Cumberlidge, Neil -- Cuttelod, Annabelle -- Derocher, Andrew E -- Diesmos, Arvin C -- Donaldson, John S -- Duckworth, J W -- Dutson, Guy -- Dutta, S K -- Emslie, Richard H -- Farjon, Aljos -- Fowler, Sarah -- Freyhof, Jorg -- Garshelis, David L -- Gerlach, Justin -- Gower, David J -- Grant, Tandora D -- Hammerson, Geoffrey A -- Harris, Richard B -- Heaney, Lawrence R -- Hedges, S Blair -- Hero, Jean-Marc -- Hughes, Baz -- Hussain, Syed Ainul -- Icochea M, Javier -- Inger, Robert F -- Ishii, Nobuo -- Iskandar, Djoko T -- Jenkins, Richard K B -- Kaneko, Yoshio -- Kottelat, Maurice -- Kovacs, Kit M -- Kuzmin, Sergius L -- La Marca, Enrique -- Lamoreux, John F -- Lau, Michael W N -- Lavilla, Esteban O -- Leus, Kristin -- Lewison, Rebecca L -- Lichtenstein, Gabriela -- Livingstone, Suzanne R -- Lukoschek, Vimoksalehi -- Mallon, David P -- McGowan, Philip J K -- McIvor, Anna -- Moehlman, Patricia D -- Molur, Sanjay -- Munoz Alonso, Antonio -- Musick, John A -- Nowell, Kristin -- Nussbaum, Ronald A -- Olech, Wanda -- Orlov, Nikolay L -- Papenfuss, Theodore J -- Parra-Olea, Gabriela -- Perrin, William F -- Polidoro, Beth A -- Pourkazemi, Mohammad -- Racey, Paul A -- Ragle, James S -- Ram, Mala -- Rathbun, Galen -- Reynolds, Robert P -- Rhodin, Anders G J -- Richards, Stephen J -- Rodriguez, Lily O -- Ron, Santiago R -- Rondinini, Carlo -- Rylands, Anthony B -- Sadovy de Mitcheson, Yvonne -- Sanciangco, Jonnell C -- Sanders, Kate L -- Santos-Barrera, Georgina -- Schipper, Jan -- Self-Sullivan, Caryn -- Shi, Yichuan -- Shoemaker, Alan -- Short, Frederick T -- Sillero-Zubiri, Claudio -- Silvano, Debora L -- Smith, Kevin G -- Smith, Andrew T -- Snoeks, Jos -- Stattersfield, Alison J -- Symes, Andrew J -- Taber, Andrew B -- Talukdar, Bibhab K -- Temple, Helen J -- Timmins, Rob -- Tobias, Joseph A -- Tsytsulina, Katerina -- Tweddle, Denis -- Ubeda, Carmen -- Valenti, Sarah V -- van Dijk, Peter Paul -- Veiga, Liza M -- Veloso, Alberto -- Wege, David C -- Wilkinson, Mark -- Williamson, Elizabeth A -- Xie, Feng -- Young, Bruce E -- Akcakaya, H Resit -- Bennun, Leon -- Blackburn, Tim M -- Boitani, Luigi -- Dublin, Holly T -- da Fonseca, Gustavo A B -- Gascon, Claude -- Lacher, Thomas E Jr -- Mace, Georgina M -- Mainka, Susan A -- McNeely, Jeffery A -- Mittermeier, Russell A -- Reid, Gordon McGregor -- Rodriguez, Jon Paul -- Rosenberg, Andrew A -- Samways, Michael J -- Smart, Jane -- Stein, Bruce A -- Stuart, Simon N -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2010 Dec 10;330(6010):1503-9. doi: 10.1126/science.1194442. Description: Gamma-ray binaries are stellar systems containing a neutron star or black hole, with gamma-ray emission produced by an interaction between the components. These systems are rare, even though binary evolution models predict dozens in our Galaxy. A search for gamma-ray binaries with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) shows that 1FGL J1018.6-5856 exhibits intensity and spectral modulation with a 16.6-day period. We identified a variable x-ray counterpart, which shows a sharp maximum coinciding with maximum gamma-ray emission, as well as an O6V((f)) star optical counterpart and a radio counterpart that is also apparently modulated on the orbital period. 1FGL J1018.6-5856 is thus a gamma-ray binary, and its detection suggests the presence of other fainter binaries in the Galaxy.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Fermi LAT Collaboration -- Ackermann, M -- Ajello, M -- Ballet, J -- Barbiellini, G -- Bastieri, D -- Belfiore, A -- Bellazzini, R -- Berenji, B -- Blandford, R D -- Bloom, E D -- Bonamente, E -- Borgland, A W -- Bregeon, J -- Brigida, M -- Bruel, P -- Buehler, R -- Buson, S -- Caliandro, G A -- Cameron, R A -- Caraveo, P A -- Cavazzuti, E -- Cecchi, C -- Celik, O -- Charles, E -- Chaty, S -- Chekhtman, A -- Cheung, C C -- Chiang, J -- Ciprini, S -- Claus, R -- Cohen-Tanugi, J -- Corbel, S -- Corbet, R H D -- Cutini, S -- de Luca, A -- den Hartog, P R -- de Palma, F -- Dermer, C D -- Digel, S W -- do Couto e Silva, E -- Donato, D -- Drell, P S -- Drlica-Wagner, A -- Dubois, R -- Dubus, G -- Favuzzi, C -- Fegan, S J -- Ferrara, E C -- Focke, W B -- Fortin, P -- Fukazawa, Y -- Funk, S -- Fusco, P -- Gargano, F -- Gasparrini, D -- Gehrels, N -- Germani, S -- Giglietto, N -- Giordano, F -- Giroletti, M -- Glanzman, T -- Godfrey, G -- Grenier, I A -- Grove, J E -- Guiriec, S -- Hadasch, D -- Hanabata, Y -- Harding, A K -- Hayashida, M -- Hays, E -- Hill, A B -- Hughes, R E -- Johannesson, G -- Johnson, A S -- Johnson, T J -- Kamae, T -- Katagiri, H -- Kataoka, J -- Kerr, M -- Knodlseder, J -- Kuss, M -- Lande, J -- Longo, F -- Loparco, F -- Lovellette, M N -- Lubrano, P -- Mazziotta, M N -- McEnery, J E -- Michelson, P F -- Mitthumsiri, W -- Mizuno, T -- Monte, C -- Monzani, M E -- Morselli, A -- Moskalenko, I V -- Murgia, S -- Nakamori, T -- Naumann-Godo, M -- Norris, J P -- Nuss, E -- Ohno, M -- Ohsugi, T -- Okumura, A -- Omodei, N -- Orlando, E -- Ozaki, M -- Paneque, D -- Parent, D -- Pesce-Rollins, M -- Pierbattista, M -- Piron, F -- Pivato, G -- Porter, T A -- Raino, S -- Rando, R -- Razzano, M -- Reimer, A -- Reimer, O -- Ritz, S -- Romani, R W -- Roth, M -- Saz Parkinson, P M -- Sgro, C -- Siskind, E J -- Spandre, G -- Spinelli, P -- Suson, D J -- Takahashi, H -- Tanaka, T -- Thayer, J G -- Thayer, J B -- Thompson, D J -- Tibaldo, L -- Tinivella, M -- Torres, D F -- Tosti, G -- Troja, E -- Uchiyama, Y -- Usher, T L -- Vandenbroucke, J -- Vianello, G -- Vitale, V -- Waite, A P -- Winer, B L -- Wood, K S -- Wood, M -- Yang, Z -- Zimmer, S -- Coe, M J -- Di Mille, F -- Edwards, P G -- Filipovic, M D -- Payne, J L -- Stevens, J -- Torres, M A P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Jan 13;335(6065):189-93. doi: 10.1126/science.1213974.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉W. Description: The Kepler spacecraft is monitoring more than 150,000 stars for evidence of planets transiting those stars. We report the detection of two Saturn-size planets that transit the same Sun-like star, based on 7 months of Kepler observations. Their 19.2- and 38.9-day periods are presently increasing and decreasing at respective average rates of 4 and 39 minutes per orbit; in addition, the transit times of the inner body display an alternating variation of smaller amplitude. These signatures are characteristic of gravitational interaction of two planets near a 2:1 orbital resonance. Six radial-velocity observations show that these two planets are the most massive objects orbiting close to the star and substantially improve the estimates of their masses. After removing the signal of the two confirmed giant planets, we identified an additional transiting super-Earth-size planet candidate with a period of 1.6 days.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Holman, Matthew J -- Fabrycky, Daniel C -- Ragozzine, Darin -- Ford, Eric B -- Steffen, Jason H -- Welsh, William F -- Lissauer, Jack J -- Latham, David W -- Marcy, Geoffrey W -- Walkowicz, Lucianne M -- Batalha, Natalie M -- Jenkins, Jon M -- Rowe, Jason F -- Cochran, William D -- Fressin, Francois -- Torres, Guillermo -- Buchhave, Lars A -- Sasselov, Dimitar D -- Borucki, William J -- Koch, David G -- Basri, Gibor -- Brown, Timothy M -- Caldwell, Douglas A -- Charbonneau, David -- Dunham, Edward W -- Gautier, Thomas N 3rd -- Geary, John C -- Gilliland, Ronald L -- Haas, Michael R -- Howell, Steve B -- Ciardi, David R -- Endl, Michael -- Fischer, Debra -- Furesz, Gabor -- Hartman, Joel D -- Isaacson, Howard -- Johnson, John A -- MacQueen, Phillip J -- Moorhead, Althea V -- Morehead, Robert C -- Orosz, Jerome A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2010 Oct 1;330(6000):51-4. doi: 10.1126/science.1195778. Description: The origin of Galactic cosmic rays is a century-long puzzle. Indirect evidence points to their acceleration by supernova shockwaves, but we know little of their escape from the shock and their evolution through the turbulent medium surrounding massive stars. Gamma rays can probe their spreading through the ambient gas and radiation fields. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has observed the star-forming region of Cygnus X. The 1- to 100-gigaelectronvolt images reveal a 50-parsec-wide cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays that flood the cavities carved by the stellar winds and ionization fronts from young stellar clusters. It provides an example to study the youth of cosmic rays in a superbubble environment before they merge into the older Galactic population.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ackermann, M -- Ajello, M -- Allafort, A -- Baldini, L -- Ballet, J -- Barbiellini, G -- Bastieri, D -- Belfiore, A -- Bellazzini, R -- Berenji, B -- Blandford, R D -- Bloom, E D -- Bonamente, E -- Borgland, A W -- Bottacini, E -- Brigida, M -- Bruel, P -- Buehler, R -- Buson, S -- Caliandro, G A -- Cameron, R A -- Caraveo, P A -- Casandjian, J M -- Cecchi, C -- Chekhtman, A -- Cheung, C C -- Chiang, J -- Ciprini, S -- Claus, R -- Cohen-Tanugi, J -- de Angelis, A -- de Palma, F -- Dermer, C D -- do Couto E Silva, E -- Drell, P S -- Dumora, D -- Favuzzi, C -- Fegan, S J -- Focke, W B -- Fortin, P -- Fukazawa, Y -- Fusco, P -- Gargano, F -- Germani, S -- Giglietto, N -- Giordano, F -- Giroletti, M -- Glanzman, T -- Godfrey, G -- Grenier, I A -- Guillemot, L -- Guiriec, S -- Hadasch, D -- Hanabata, Y -- Harding, A K -- Hayashida, M -- Hayashi, K -- Hays, E -- Johannesson, G -- Johnson, A S -- Kamae, T -- Katagiri, H -- Kataoka, J -- Kerr, M -- Knodlseder, J -- Kuss, M -- Lande, J -- Latronico, L -- Lee, S-H -- Longo, F -- Loparco, F -- Lott, B -- Lovellette, M N -- Lubrano, P -- Martin, P -- Mazziotta, M N -- McEnery, J E -- Mehault, J -- Michelson, P F -- Mitthumsiri, W -- Mizuno, T -- Monte, C -- Monzani, M E -- Morselli, A -- Moskalenko, I V -- Murgia, S -- Naumann-Godo, M -- Nolan, P L -- Norris, J P -- Nuss, E -- Ohsugi, T -- Okumura, A -- Orlando, E -- Ormes, J F -- Ozaki, M -- Paneque, D -- Parent, D -- Pesce-Rollins, M -- Pierbattista, M -- Piron, F -- Pohl, M -- Prokhorov, D -- Raino, S -- Rando, R -- Razzano, M -- Reposeur, T -- Ritz, S -- Parkinson, P M Saz -- Sgro, C -- Siskind, E J -- Smith, P D -- Spinelli, P -- Strong, A W -- Takahashi, H -- Tanaka, T -- Thayer, J G -- Thayer, J B -- Thompson, D J -- Tibaldo, L -- Torres, D F -- Tosti, G -- Tramacere, A -- Troja, E -- Uchiyama, Y -- Vandenbroucke, J -- Vasileiou, V -- Vianello, G -- Vitale, V -- Waite, A P -- Wang, P -- Winer, B L -- Wood, K S -- Yang, Z -- Zimmer, S -- Bontemps, S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2011 Nov 25;334(6059):1103-7. doi: 10.1126/science.1210311.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉W. Description: The light emitted by stars and accreting compact objects through the history of the universe is encoded in the intensity of the extragalactic background light (EBL). Knowledge of the EBL is important to understand the nature of star formation and galaxy evolution, but direct measurements of the EBL are limited by galactic and other foreground emissions. Here, we report an absorption feature seen in the combined spectra of a sample of gamma-ray blazars out to a redshift of z approximately 1.6. This feature is caused by attenuation of gamma rays by the EBL at optical to ultraviolet frequencies and allowed us to measure the EBL flux density in this frequency band.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ackermann, M -- Ajello, M -- Allafort, A -- Schady, P -- Baldini, L -- Ballet, J -- Barbiellini, G -- Bastieri, D -- Bellazzini, R -- Blandford, R D -- Bloom, E D -- Borgland, A W -- Bottacini, E -- Bouvier, A -- Bregeon, J -- Brigida, M -- Bruel, P -- Buehler, R -- Buson, S -- Caliandro, G A -- Cameron, R A -- Caraveo, P A -- Cavazzuti, E -- Cecchi, C -- Charles, E -- Chaves, R C G -- Chekhtman, A -- Cheung, C C -- Chiang, J -- Chiaro, G -- Ciprini, S -- Claus, R -- Cohen-Tanugi, J -- Conrad, J -- Cutini, S -- D'Ammando, F -- de Palma, F -- Dermer, C D -- Digel, S W -- do Couto e Silva, E -- Dominguez, A -- Drell, P S -- Drlica-Wagner, A -- Favuzzi, C -- Fegan, S J -- Focke, W B -- Franckowiak, A -- Fukazawa, Y -- Funk, S -- Fusco, P -- Gargano, F -- Gasparrini, D -- Gehrels, N -- Germani, S -- Giglietto, N -- Giordano, F -- Giroletti, M -- Glanzman, T -- Godfrey, G -- Grenier, I A -- Grove, J E -- Guiriec, S -- Gustafsson, M -- Hadasch, D -- Hayashida, M -- Hays, E -- Jackson, M S -- Jogler, T -- Kataoka, J -- Knodlseder, J -- Kuss, M -- Lande, J -- Larsson, S -- Latronico, L -- Longo, F -- Loparco, F -- Lovellette, M N -- Lubrano, P -- Mazziotta, M N -- McEnery, J E -- Mehault, J -- Michelson, P F -- Mizuno, T -- Monte, C -- Monzani, M E -- Morselli, A -- Moskalenko, I V -- Murgia, S -- Tramacere, A -- Nuss, E -- Greiner, J -- Ohno, M -- Ohsugi, T -- Omodei, N -- Orienti, M -- Orlando, E -- Ormes, J F -- Paneque, D -- Perkins, J S -- Pesce-Rollins, M -- Piron, F -- Pivato, G -- Porter, T A -- Raino, S -- Rando, R -- Razzano, M -- Razzaque, S -- Reimer, A -- Reimer, O -- Reyes, L C -- Ritz, S -- Rau, A -- Romoli, C -- Roth, M -- Sanchez-Conde, M -- Sanchez, D A -- Scargle, J D -- Sgro, C -- Siskind, E J -- Spandre, G -- Spinelli, P -- Stawarz, Lukasz -- Suson, D J -- Takahashi, H -- Tanaka, T -- Thayer, J G -- Thompson, D J -- Tibaldo, L -- Tinivella, M -- Torres, D F -- Tosti, G -- Troja, E -- Usher, T L -- Vandenbroucke, J -- Vasileiou, V -- Vianello, G -- Vitale, V -- Waite, A P -- Winer, B L -- Wood, K S -- Wood, M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Nov 30;338(6111):1190-2. doi: 10.1126/science.1227160.
