    Notes: A solution is given for unsteady state concentration profiles in an infinitely long composite cylinder resulting from a step-change in concentration in a large reservoir surrounding the cylinder. The composite cylinder consists of an inner cylinder with diffusivity D1 surrounded by a permeable tube with diffusivity D2 and has interfacial mass transfer resistances at the cylinder-tube and tube-reservoir interfaces. Numerical values are given for the first eight roots and various coefficients of the solution for physical properties typical of tubular (hollow fiber) membranes. These results can be used in the analysis of data from unsteady state mass transfer experiments to determine the permeability of homogeneous tubular membranes. A simple, approximate method for data analysis is suggested for the rapid estimation of the permeability of both homogeneous and asymmetric (skinned) tubular membranes.

    Notes: The problem of synthesizing an optimal multicomponent separation system which is energy integrated is solved by a combined decomposition and dynamic programming technique.Dynamic programming is an optimization technique which allows the solution by decomposition of a multistage or serial optimization problem. Whenever the special serial structure is absent, again decomposition can be tried, but in this case it is by no means obvious how to decompose effectively the given problem into subproblems. In this paper the nonserial problem of synthesizing an energy integrated separation system is solved by decomposing the original problem so that a serial structure results.

    Notes: Lineweaver-Burk plots of reaction rate data obtained with immobilized enzymes need not be linear even when intrinsic enzyme kinetics follow the simple Michaelis-Menten rate expression. Theoretical calculations show that mass transfer effects may cause curvature which is concave or convex to the abscissa, depending upon experimental conditions. Consequently, graphical procedures commonly employed for analysis of soluble enzyme kinetics may yield misleading results when applied to immobilized enzymes. Three approaches which follow from the behavior of numerical and asymptotic solutions to the problem are proposed for extraction of intrinsic kinetic information.

    Notes: An experimental study has confirmed a theoretical prediction that, when an exothermic mass transfer limited chemical reaction occurs on a single catalytic wire for which the parameter a [Equation (11)] is large, temperature fluctuations (flickering) of large amplitude must be induced by concentration fluctuations. A simplified model is presented for predicting the magnitude of flickering in industrial convertors for which the parameter a is usually large. The model should be useful in estimating the influence of improved mixing of the reactants on the reduction in precious metal loss from the gauze.

    Notes: A mathematical model and an iterative procedure to calculate holdup and pressure drop in horizontal gas-liquid flow is developed.     Notes: Diffusion rates were measured at 25°C and 1 atm by a steady state method in pellets of nonporous nickel oxide particles in order to determine the effects of sintering and chemical reduction. Sintering led to a striking decrease in diffusion flux; tortuosities above 100 were found for highly sintered (porosity 0.03) pellets. Reduction caused a sharp increase in diffusion rate when the original pellet was highly sintered. For an originally unsintered pellet the diffusion rate decreased with extent of reduction.These phenomena were explained quantitatively by using: (1) the random pore model to predict tortuosity factors for an unsintered, unreduced pellet, and (2) the extent of pore interconnections and the fractional reduction to treat the effects of sintering and reduction. In this way an approximate, predictive equation was derived which contained no arbitrary parameters and which required for application only data on porosity and extent of chemical reduction.

    Notes: Growth and dissolution rates of nickel sulfate α-hexahydrate were measured as functions of the concentration driving force in a laboratory-scale fluidized-bed crystallizer for the temperature range 35° to 50°C and the crystal size range 0.5 to 4.0 mm.Dissolution rates at a given temperature and crystal size were first order in the concentration driving force. Growth rates were about one-quarter of dissolution rates and depended on a higher exponent (around 1.3) of the concentration driving force. This exponent was not significantly affected by variations in crystal size, but decreased as temperature increased. The apparent variation of growth rate itself with crystal size at constant temperature was slight. Growth rates were found to be insensitive to solids concentration.

    Notes: The effect of nonuniform velocity distributions and retrograde flow on Murphree tray efficiency has been studied. Both types of nonuniformities were shown to substantially reduce the efficiency of the tray.     Notes: Waves on falling liquid film display certain random features. At least two classes of such random waves are shown to exist; large waves which carry the bulk of the fluid and small waves which cover a substrate film that exists between large waves. It is shown that the statistics of the substrate thicknes and its wave structure can be extracted from measurements of the variation of film thickness with time. A theory is presented for calculating the mean substrate thickness and the substrate flow rate. The statistics of the wave structure is presented and compared with existing theory. The importance of the substrate in controlling transfer processes is demonstrated.

    Notes: The utility of a new dynamic experimental technique is illustrated for the specific case of the vapor phase dehydration of ethanol over a hydrogen ion exchange resin. Adsorbed phase composition data are obtained simultaneously with complete vapor phase information, providing new insight into the catalytic behavior. A mathematical model, based upon Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics, comprises simply five first-order ordinary differential equations. The model describes all of the important transient and equilibrium characteristics of the reacting system qualitatively and most quantitatively. Experimental data alone are used to show that the surface reaction is the rate controlling step.

    Notes: Choosing the type of laboratory reactor for evaluating process kinetics may be the most crucial step in an industrial process development program. Not only would a wrong choice result in expensive delays, but data may be obtained which would scale-up erroneously, leading to a disastrous commercial design. Some of the pitfalls and limitations of various laboratory reactors are discussed for some typically complex industrial reaction systems. A modus operandi is suggested for choosing from among the potential reactors those that have the best chance of supplying the desired data. As is typical of many complex industrial reaction systems, no one reactor turns out to be ideal and many times the building of two or more types is advantageous.

    Notes: The kinetics of secondary nucleation have been determined from measurement of the supersaturation as a function of time following the addition of seed nuclei to a supercooled solution in a well-stirred batch crystallizer. Population balance mathematics have been used to show that the secondary nucleation kinetics may be inferred from the supersaturation-time curve. The method has been applied to the determination of the kinetics of the secondary nucleation of ice and found to give results in excellent agreement with those obtained from tedious particle counts. In addition, it has been shown that the moment of the particle size distribution that best correlates the nucleation rate data can be inferred from the initial transient of the supersaturation-time history.

    Notes: A simple procedure for achieving the minimum cost design of a single reaction fluidized reactor system with feed and recycle heaters is presented and proven. The problem's mathematical interest stems from its multimodality, the handling of the exponential dependence of temperature, and the presence of an integral equation constraint. The proof technique is an extension of Lagrange's method, supplemented by ideas from geometric programming, extended to exponential and the integral functions.

    Notes: Simplified expressions to calculate the extent of reaction in a fluid bed show good agreement with the experimental data of Lewis et al. (1959) and Swaay and Zuiderweg (1972). The contribution of the dilute phase seems more important than that of the jetting zone or reaction factor (Hatta number) in usual fluid bed operations. The effect of the dilute phase is discussed. It is profitable to use the dilute phase for the consecutive isothermal and endothermic reaction, but unprofitable for the exothermic reaction. These characteristics depend upon the nature of reactions and careful considerations as to the choice of the gas velocity, particle characteristics, and reactor design will be necessary.

    Notes: A lyotropic protein liquid crystal was studied experimentally to evaluate its potential as a selective liquid membrane. Concentrated solutions of fibrinogen had nematic like properties under shear and exhibited graded selectivities toward solutes of widely differing sizes when subjected to a two-dimensional velocity field. The magnitude of the selectivity differences was found to depend on the shear orientated direction of the liquid crystal layer. The selectivity seems to be both a solubility phenomena and a relative diffusion phenomena. These anisotropic layers may have potential as controlled variable selectivity membranes.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with the problem of designing satisfactory loworder (incomplete state feedback) controllers starting with a high-order, state-space model. Two design approaches are considered: the control law reduction technique, recently developed by the authors (Wilson et al., 1973), and the well-known model reduction approach. These two design techniques are used to develop a variety of low-order controllers for a double-effect evaporator starting with a 10th-order model. Experimental and simulated response data from the computer-controlled evaporator demonstrate the superiority of the control law reduction approach in this application. It is also shown that several of the previously published modal approaches to model reduction are basically equivalent since they yield identical reduced-order models.

    Notes: Qualitiative theories are developed to explain the roles of surface tension and the two surface viscosities during the entrapment of residual oil by water and during the subsequent displacement of residual oil by surfactant solutions. The results are in agreement with available experimental data concerning the effects to be observed as the oil-water surface tension is reduced. Limited data suggest an order of magnitude criterion for the critical surface tension above which no residual oil can be recovered. The two surface viscosities do not affect the entrapment of residual oil, but they are predicted to play a major role in the displacement of residual oil by surfactant solutions.

    Notes: Convective instabilities in shear flow are studied experimentally in a horizontal concurrent two-phase flow channel. The convective instabilities are generated by interphase mass transfer between the two immiscible liquid phases. Schlieren photography perpendicular to the interface is used to record both the disturbance shape and its orientation. Three separate convective modes are studied: A. surface tension driven, B. buoyancy driven, and C. coactive buoyancy and surface tension driven. The disturbance structure of mode A appears as rings which oscillate in diameter as they are swept downstream. Streamwise oriented roll vortices also appear when flow conditions move the interface into a region of higher shear. Modes B and C are both characterized by streamwise oriented roll vortices with mode C having an additional fine structure.

    Notes: To facilitate design of an extraction process for removal of organic solutes from petroleum and petrochemical waste streams distribution-coefficient date were obtained for typical organic pollutants at high dilution. Volatile solvents were chosen because of their low solubility in water and because they are recovered easily. Samples form both the aqueous and the organic phase were analyzed chromatographically. To remove a sample from an equilibrium cell operating at ressures well above atmospheric, a special technique was developed using low-melting Indalloy for micro-encapsulation.Distribution coefficients at ambient temperature are given for a variety of solutes, including esters, phenolics, ketones, and aldehydes. The results are correlated by a simple relation based on perturbed-hard-sphere theory for dilute solutions. Isobutane or isobutylene may be particularly useful in a dual-solvent extraction process wherein a polar organic solvent is used in a secondary extraction tod remove the polar solvent from water.

    Notes: A counterexample is given to the strong maximum principle for boundary control of a class of distributed parameter systems. The particular system deals with chemical reactors suffering catalyst decay and is in the class whose members are described by sets of first-order partial differential equations of the hyperbolic type. It is shown that an optimal control exists and that over any finite time interval in which the control is unconstrained the exit conversion from the reactor remains constant. It is further shown that for certain values of the parameters the optimal control policy violates the necessary conditions of the strong maximum principle for boundary control of distributed parameter systems.

The packing was 0.29-cm alumina spheres coated with palladium catalyst. Mass transfer coefficients increased as the 1/2 power of the liquid rate and increased with gas rate to a gas phase Reynolds number of about 50. The severe decrease for higher gas rates may be due to pulsing flow.

    Notes: An experimental procedure based on continuous crystal seeding was developed which can explicitly determine the fundamental relationship between collision breeding and the leading moments of the crystal size distribution.     Notes: The interaction between imperfect mixing and cyclic operation is examined for several continuous polymerizations in stirred-tank reactors. The reactor is represented by a mixed model involving two interconnected ideal stirred vessels. Cyclic fluctuations in the concentration of a chain transfer agent during Ziegler-catalyzed olefin polymerization can yield molecular weight distributions significantly different from those of a conventional steady state reactor. This result is consistent with the available experimental data. It is especially interesting that the cyclic reactor effluent with a modified molecular weight distribution is of approximately time-invariant composition when the period of cycling is on the order of the reactor holding time. Imperfect mixing has a lesser effect on cycled reactors for free-radical and polycondensation polymerization than it has on cycled olefin polymerization reactors.

    Notes: The objective of this work was to study the undesirable oscillating behavior which can develop on distillation trays. This takes the form of violent lateral movements of the gas/liquid mixture, causing premature flooding and reduced efficiency. It has been demonstrated that entrainment is significantly increased by the presence of oscillations. A simple predictive method by which a designer may evaluate the likelihood of oscillations occurring is proposed. It is concluded that columns of greater than about 1.0 m diam. operating at atmospheric pressure or above are unlikely to oscillate. However, reduced pressure columns of greater diameter may oscillate. A very simple mesh baffle system which completely prevents oscillations developing is described.

    Notes: The kinetic mechanisms of fuel nitrogen conversion to NO and N2 in a diffusion flame were investigated. A simple model of a diffusion flame in which the reaction zone has a finite thickness was developed. The purpose of this model was to allow the testing of complex kinetic mechanisms of pollutant formation under conditions where the fuel and oxidant feed rates are controlled by diffusion. A simple kinetic mechanism in which fuel nitrogen was simulated by nitrogen atoms showed the correct functional dependence of nitric oxide emissions on fuel nitrogen content. The model also predicts a significant effect of combustion intensity and temperature on fuel nitrogen conversion. For the hydrogen air diffusion flame the Zeldovich reaction mechanism could account for the production of N2 as well as NO.

    Notes: Rates were measured at 25°C for the adsorption of benzaldehyde from an aqueous solution into particles of Amberlite, or activated carbon, suspended in the solution. The data for monodisperse, Amberlite particles (mean pore radius = 50Å) showed significant intraparticle diffusion resistance over the entire particle size range 200 to 900 microns (diameter). Intraparticle diffusivities were larger (tortuosity factor ∼ 0.35) than expected from pore-volume diffusion in the liquid-filled pores.For the activated carbon particles (of the same size) which have a bidisperse pore-volume distribution (pore diameter range 15 to 104Å), the effect of intraparticle diffusion was much less important and separation of the external diffusion resistance to obtain a precise value of the intraparticle diffusivity was not possible. However, De values are larger than for Amberlite and much greater than the molecular diffusivity of benzaldehyde in liquid-filled pores. The unusually high intraparticle diffusivity seems most likely to be due to interpreting dynamic adsorption data for a bidisperse porous particle with a theory involving but one diffusivity.

    Notes: Polydisperse submicronic lead chloride aerosols were generated from melt phase under dry and humid conditions. The particle size and concentration increased with increasing generation temperature. The aerosol particles generated in a dry atmosphere were pherical while the aerosol particles generated in humid atmosphere showed development of crystallinity at the surface.Coagulation rates of the aerosol generated in a dry atmosphere were measured at room temperature under different humidities. The coagulation rates were in goodagreement with Smoluchowski's theory, modified to include the effect of polydisperisity and were unaffected by humidity. The interaction of lead chloride particles with the water vapor was characterized by a process of adsorption a the interfce. The coagulated aerosol exhibited a chain structure for humidities lower than 70% and, at higher humidities, compact agglomeration was observed.

    Notes: An analysis of the velocity profile and pressure drop relationships for turbulent flow of fiber suspensions through smooth tubes was evaluated experimentally over a range of flow rates, tube sizes, fiber concentrations, and fiber geometries (aspect ratios). This work shows that drag reduction in these systems, in marked contrast to that in viscoelastic polymeric fluids, involves processes in the turbulent core of the velocity field. As a result the drag reduction achieved is independent of the scale of the system.The implications of these results with respect to rates of heat and mass transport are considered in a preliminary way. The measurement of such transport rates, and of the turbulent velocity profiles in dilute suspensions, is seen to be of mechanistic interest.

    Notes: It is suggested that the productivity of ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis can be increased substantially where the desired product is concentrated in the diffusional boundary layer adjacent to the membrane. This increase can be achieved by removing product preferentially from the boundary-layer region. The possible concentration increase and yield of such a skimming process are predicted to be very significant for the constant-property approximation and stagnation flow considered in this exploratory paper.

    Notes: Fully developed forced-convective heat transfer to viscous flow of a constant-property Newtonian fluid in curved circular tubes was studied theoretically for a uniform-wall-temperature boundary condition. Numerical solutions were obtained over a wide range of Prandtl numbers for Dean numbers as large as 1,200. The curvature ratio (radius of bend/inside radius of tube) was included as an independent parameter and, for values as small as 10, was found to have a negligible effect on the peripherally averaged Nusselt number. The average Nusselt numbers for the important Prandtl number range of 0.7 to 5 were correlated by NNu = 0.836 NDe0.5 NPr0.1 for NDe ≥ 80.

    Notes: Liquid composition-total pressure and liquid composition-liquid density data for the carbon dioxide-ethane system were measured at -31.7°, -17.8°, -3.9°, and 10.0°C (-25°, 0°, 25°, and 50°F ± 0.02°F), from 0 to 80 mole % CO2 at 10°C and 0 to 100% CO2 for the other isotherms. The Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation of state with a modified A0 mixing rule was used to correlate the composition-pressure data, with deviations in predicted pressures of only 0.8% average and 2% maximum. Vapor-liquid equilibrium compositions and component K values y/x were then predicted for this minimum boiling azeotrope system from 10° down to -56.7°C (50° to -70°F).

    Notes: An analysis is presented which enables detailed description of solute concentration profiles for free-flow elecrophoresis in planar slit flows. This analysis is suitable for either batch or continuous operation with arbitrary variation of solute input rate, and it requires no seriously restrictive assumptions other than constancy of equilibrium and transport properties. It permits for the first time a systematic investigation of the effects of governing parameters and can be used to optimize operating conditions.     Notes: There is an equivalence between stiff and singularly perturbed systems of ordinary differential equations. This feature is exploited in this paper by numerically employing recent singular perturbation methods to attack troublesome boundary layer stage of the solution in which some variables have very short response times. The numerical method affords a means of essentially determining the thickness of this boundary layer. The algorithm is capable of high stability and accuracy for the commonly occurring stiff system, whether or not it is in singularly perturbed form. Application to a singularly perturbed reaction system and a highly stiff reactor system not in singularly perturbed form demonstrate the effectiveness and utility of this approach.

    Notes: This paper outlines the concepts for a systematic approach to the safety analysis of chemical processing systems. A procedure for automatically generating fault trees is presented. The fault trees describe nearly all the failure modes for the system under analysis. The fault tree generation procedure uses information on (1) the description of the system (detailed flowsheet), (2) physical and chemical properties of materials in and around the system, and (3) unit models which describe the behavior of the units within the system and which are assembled to describe the behavior of the complete system. The unit models are connected to form an information flow structure for the complete processing system. Unit failure models are also defined for common chemical units. By systematically defining hazard states and searching the information flow structure for the system, it is possible to generate fault trees for the complete process. An analysis of the fault trees can reveal the important failure modes for the process.

    Notes: A new analysis is presented for the extraction of Arrhenius parameters from experimental measurements of ignition temperatures during catalytic oxidation over electrically-heated metal wires. Butane oxidation on high purity platinum wires has yielded reproducible experimental results for the reaction rate and has provided consistent estimates of the Arrhenius parameters. First-order kinetics was assumed. The present treatment contains explicit consideration of: (1) the ohmic heating term; and (2) the end conduction heat loss from the catalytic wire. The effects of wire length, diameter, and configuration are reconciled when the ignition phenomenon is refferred to the center-point temperature of the wire.

    Notes: Part II of this review is concerned with the mathematical analysis of facilitated transport. An exposition is given of the most generally useful techniques for obtaining asymptotic or approximate solutions to one-dimensional carrier-mediated diffusion in membranes, involving multiple permeant and carrier species which undergo one or more chemical reactions. Primary emphasis is devoted to the limiting regimes of weakly-perturbed membranes (small driving forces) and slow or fast reactions (small or large Damkohler numbers). Many of the results appearing in the literature are unified and extended, and a systematic procedure for using these to estimate membrane performance is put forth. Finally, some areas for further work are identified.

    Notes: The theory of perturbation chromatography and isotopic tracers has been applied to the investigation of the oxygen exchange reaction between carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the presence of a copper-zinc oxide catalyst at 205°C and atmospheric pressure. By analyzing the retention times of carbon-14 monoxide and carbon-14 dioxide tracers in six binary carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide carrier gas streams, it has been possible to shed light on the mechanism of the exchange reaction. Two types of carbon monoxide adsorption and two types of carbon dioxide adsorption were identified. Based on a numerical simulation of the experimental data, it has been concluded that the exchange reaction proceeds via the dissociative adsorption of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, the surface oxygen species formed during the dissociative adsorption of carbon dioxide appears to be the active site for the exchange reaction.

    Notes: Carbon dioxide was absorbed by aqueous Carbopol solutions in a turbine-agitated vessel for the cases of absorption across an unbroken interface and absorption with the gas bubbling through the liquid. The rheological behavior of the solutions was described by the non-Newtonian power law model with flow behavior indices varying from 0.92 to 0.59. An effective viscosity technique which had previously been developed to correlate agitated vessel rates of viscous dissipation and heat transfer with power law pseudoplastic fluids was used to correlate the data.

    Notes: Supported ferric oxide can remove oxides of nitrogen from hot and cold gases, 20°C to 350°C, containing NO in the range of 50 to 1000 ppm when sufficient oxygen is present. Rates of sorption and capacities increase with oxygen concentration. The sorbent can be regenerated with air at 400° to 450°C an indefinite number of times.Reduced iron oxide sorbs nitric oxide more rapidly than the ferric oxide and has a higher capacity. It can be regenerated with hot reducing gases.

    Notes: The packed bed model developed by Payatakes, Tien, and Turian (1973a, 1973b) is used as a basis for the study of particle deposition in deep bed filtration. The size of the particulate matters present in the suspension is assumed to be sufficiently large for Brownian motion to be negligible, but small enough for straining to be unimportant. The prediction of the rate of particle deposition is based on the one-step trajectory approach. The collector is represented by a unit bed element of the porous media model and the particle trajectory equation is formulated to include the gravitational force, the hydrodynamic force and torque (including the correction for the presence of the unit cell wall), the London force (including the retardation effect, which is shown to be of primary importance under conditions usually met in deep bed filtration systems), and the electrokinetic force. Sample capture trajectories, including the limiting capture trajectories, are given.Based on the limiting trajectories and the assumption of uniform particle distribution at the entrance of each unit cell, the number fractions (of suspended particles) impacted on each unit cell are determined and then used to calculate the fraction impacted on the entire unit collector and also the value of the filter coefficient for a clean bed. It is also shown how the capture trajectory calculation can be used to determine the local rate of deposition along the wall of a given unit cell.

    Notes: Generalized depletion curves for desorption (and Corresponding breakthrough curves for adsorption) were calculated for systems characterized by the Langmuir-type multicomponent equilibrium equation and controlled by the film type rate model. In contrast with adsorption where the nonkey (or less strongly adsorbed) component curves display overshoots above feed concentration, in desorption the key component depletion curves exhibit the instabilities in the form of inflections and curvatures. As in the one component case, the differences in the depletion and breakthrough curves may be related to the rate phenomena. The undulations in the key component depletion curves may be characterized by derivatives of the rate data. The major significance of these instabilities is to elongate the depletion curves, which in turn requires the expenditure of added effort during regeneration. Process modifications are indicated, which could suppress the instabilities. The predicted trends were confirmed by experimental depletion curves.

    Notes: The industrially important reaction of phenol and acetone to give bisphenol A and water was catalyzed by beads of ion-exchange resin (sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer) suspended in a batch reactor containing liquid reactants. The data are summarized by a rate equation accounting for reaction in the resin competitively swollen by water, acetone, phenol, and methylcyclohexane.The catalyst is modeled as two phases, each in equilibrium with the liquid: a polar phase consisting of sulfonic acid groups with hydrogeb-nonded acetone and water and a nonpolar phase consisting of the hydrocarbon matrix swollen with organic components. The rate determining step is the electrophilic attack on phenol in the nonpolar phase by a carbonium ion intermediate in the polar phase.Resin cross-linked with 4% divinylbenzene initially catalyzed acetone conversion at a rate of 5 × 10-4 (moles)/(equiv of acid groups s) at 364°K. An 8% cross-linked resin was much less active because the rigid polymer matrix was only slightly swollen by phenol, but a more highly cross-linked resin with macropores and accessible internal surface catalyzed reaction almost as rapidly as the 4% cross-linked catalyst.

    Notes: A case study is made to determine the dependence of the deep bed filtration rate (expressed in terms of the fraction of suspended particles impacted) on the eight dimensionless parameters, which are found to be relevant in the filtration process, based on the trajectory calculation method developed in Part I of this series. In addition, comparisons between results based on the theoretical model of this work and available experimental data are made. Comparisons are also made with some of FitzPatrick's theoretical results. The results of this study demonstrate clearly the complex and interactive nature of the relation between the various parameters and the efficiency of filtration. Accordingly, the conventional format of correlating experimental data, which equates the filter coefficient with a product of the pertinent dimensionless groups, each raised to an empirical exponent, will not be adequate in providing a generalized correlation of experimental filtration data.

Regulating controls to achieve this objective can be synthesized by solving a linear-quadratic optimization problem with periodic coefficient's. Generalized proportional and proportional-integral feedback regulators developed in this manner are tested by simulating a cyclic reactor. Very satisfactory control is achieved for 10% step disturbances in reactor feed conditions although the results are sensitive to the choice of manipulated variables.

    Notes: A formal method is described for the synthesis of multicomponent distillation systems when energy integration is considered between streams both within the separation sequence and in other parts of the process. The pressure in each column is considered as an optimization variable for both the energy integration and column sizing computations. Four rules are used to enumerate all feasible energy matches between the streams associated with the distillation columns. A bounding strategy which uses both upper and lower bounds is combined with dynamic programming to synthesize the optimal distillation sequence with energy integration. A five-component separation problem demonstrates the effectiveness of the methods.

    Notes: Low-pressure solubilities of methane, ethane, propane, n-butane, iso-butane, and hydrogen have been measured in n-hexadecane, n-eicosane, squalane, bicyclohexyl, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, diphenylmethane, and 1-methylnaphthalene over the temperature range 25° to 200°C. The accuracy of these measurements is better than 1%. The data for the hydrocarbon gases have been correlated with a generalized configurational entropy and a van Laar-type interaction parameter. The entropic component of that parameter is related to the free volume of the solvent as suggested by Flory's equation-of-state theory of fluid mixtures. The accuracy of the correlation is about ±15%.
