Description: Modern pollen surface samples from six lake and marsh sites in the northern California Coast Ranges establish a linear relation between elevation and the oakl(oak + pine) pollen ratio. Modern temperature and precipitation lapse rates were used to convert variations in the pollen ratio into temperature and precipitation changes. Pollen data from two cores from Clear Lake, Lake County, California, spanning the past 40,000 and 130,000 years were used to estimate temperature and precipitation changes through the last full glacial cycle. The maximum glacial cooling is estimated to be 7 degrees to 8 degrees C; the last full interglacial period was about 1.5 degrees C warmer than the Holocene, and a mid-Holocene interval was warmer than the present. The estimated precipitation changes are probably less reliable than the estimated temperature changes.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Adam, D P -- West, G J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jan 14;219(4581):168-70.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17841684" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The pattern of sulfur transformation in peat across the Everglades basin indicates that pyrite formation in organic-rich swamps depends on the use of organic oxysulfur compounds in dissimilatory respiration by sulfur-reducing bacteria. This paragenesis explains the primary distribution of sulfur compounds in low-sulfur coals and possibly in most coals and many organic-rich soils and sediments. It also accounts for the occurrence of framboidal pyrite bound in fossil tissue in coal and sediments.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Altschuler, Z S -- Schnepfe, M M -- Silber, C C -- Simon, F O -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jul 15;221(4607):221-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17815176" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The human diet contains a great variety of natural mutagens and carcinogens, as well as many natural antimutagens and anticarcinogens. Many of these mutagens and carcinogens may act through the generation of oxygen radicals. Oxygen radicals may also play a major role as endogenous initiators of degenerative processes, such as DNA damage and mutation (and promotion), that may be related to cancer, heart disease, and aging. Dietary intake of natural antioxidants could be an important aspect of the body's defense mechanism against these agents. Many antioxidants are being identified as anticarcinogens. Characterizing and optimizing such defense systems may be an important part of a strategy of minimizing cancer and other age-related diseases.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ames, B N -- ES01896/ES/NIEHS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Sep 23;221(4617):1256-64.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6351251" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Suitably brief pulses of selectively absorbed optical radiation can cause selective damage to pigmented structures, cells, and organelles in vivo. Precise aiming is unnecessary in this unique form of radiation injury because inherent optical and thermal properties provide target selectivity. A simple, predictive model is presented. Selective damage to cutaneous microvessels and to melanosomes within melanocytes is shown after 577-nanometer (3 x 10(-7) second) and 351-nanometer (2 x 10(-8) second) pulses, respectively. Hemodynamic, histological, and ultrastructural responses are discussed.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Anderson, R R -- Parrish, J A -- R01025395/PHS HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Apr 29;220(4596):524-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6836297" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: During a cruise from Hamburg to Montevideo, aerosol samples representing air masses from Europe, the Sahara, tropical Africa, South America, and open oceanic regions were collected. They showed significant amounts of soot carbon over large areas of the remote Atlantic, often similar to concentrations in rural continental areas. Back-trajectories and the ratios of soot carbon to total fine (less than 1.7 micrometers in diameter) carbon and of excess fine potassium (the portion not attributable to soil dust or sea salt) to soot carbon indicate that biomass burning in tropical regions is an important source of soot carbon to the world atmosphere. The ratio of excess potassium to soot carbon in the fine fraction of aerosols is proposed as an indicator of the relative contributions of biomass and fossil-fuel burning to soot carbon aerosols. The ratio of soot carbon to fine carbon suggests that most of the particulate organic carbon over the Atlantic is of continental origin.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Andreae, M O -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jun 10;220(4602):1148-51.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17818494" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Despite the apparent presence of limited proteolytic degradation of the protein derived from this method, the sequence analysis reveals two primary peptide sequences and suggests that active PDGF is composed of two, possibly homologous, peptides linked by a disulfide bond or bonds.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Antoniades, H N -- Hunkapiller, M W -- CA30101/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 May 27;220(4600):963-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6844921" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The university pays for its benefits from a federally financed project with its own investments in the faculty scientist and not, as is often assumed, by its absorption of project costs that are not reimbursed by the government. An analysis of the exchange of resources between the university, the scientist, the discipline, and the government shows, however, that by absorbing costs the institution gains acceptance as a host for federal research. Funds for this ticket of admission are drawn away from several groups on the campus. In exploring whether there should be such an entry fee, the pragmatic response of the National Commission on Research is considered.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Arnow, K S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jan 7;219(4580):27-32.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17734312" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: An examination of the way in which the Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Consumer Product Safety Commission each responded to evidence of formaldehyde's carcinogenicity in animal systems reveals the interplay between politics and science policy in regulatory determinations. In some cases there were significant and unjustified departures from reasoned decision-making. Agency decisions not to take action deserve special attention by citizens, the Congress, and the judiciary to ensure that federal regulatory agencies take the necessary steps to protect the public from significant health, safety, and environmental risks.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ashford, N A -- Ryan, C W -- Caldart, C C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Nov 25;222(4626):894-900.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6635664" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The exposure of the population of Utah to external gamma-radiation from the fallout from nuclear weapons tests carried out between 1951 and 1958 at the Nevada Test Site has been reconstructed from recent measurements of residual cesium-137 and plutonium in soil. Although the highest exposures were found in the extreme southwest part of Utah, as expected, the residents of the populous northern valleys around Provo, Salt Lake City, and Ogden received a higher mean dose and a significantly greater population dose (person-rads) than did the residents of most counties closer to the test site. However, population doses from external exposure throughout Utah were far too low to result in any statistically observable health effects.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Beck, H L -- Krey, P W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Apr 1;220(4592):18-24.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6828876" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Cholesterol-loaded macrophages secrete cholesterol and apolipoprotein E. The current studies show that this secretion occurs by two independent pathways. In the absence of serum, the cells secrete apolipoprotein E, but not cholesterol. In the presence of monensin (an inhibitor of protein secretion), the cells secrete cholesterol, but little apolipoprotein E. After secretion, apolipoprotein E and cholesterol associate with high-density lipoprotein to form a particle that can deliver cholesterol to the liver by receptor-mediated endocytosis. We conclude that apolipoprotein E does not function to remove cholesterol from macrophages but rather to participate in "reverse cholesterol transport."〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Basu, S K -- Goldstein, J L -- Brown, M S -- HL 20948/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Feb 18;219(4586):871-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6823554" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: If crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) are presented with food or threat stimuli, or both, their feeding behavior and escape from threat by tail flips show flexible patterns of interaction. If they are engaged in eating large, relatively immovable pieces of food, escape is inhibited, whereas if small pieces of food are being eaten, the probability of escape is enhanced. If escape occurs during a feeding bout, large pieces of food are usually released, but small ones are not. These observations suggest that the neural circuitry responsible for coordination of behavior in invertebrates may not be as simple as usually assumed.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Bellman, K L -- Krasne, F B -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Aug 19;221(4612):779-81.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17829535" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Animals with a history of receiving daily injections of +-amphetamine in a specific environment showed a placebo effect (enhanced activity) when injected with saline and placed there; control animals with similar but dissociated drug histories and experience with the test chamber failed to show the effect. The dopamine receptor blocker pimozide antagonized the establishment of conditioning. However, the same dose of pimozide, when given to previously conditioned animals on the placebo test day, failed to antagonize the expression of conditioned activity. Thus, during conditioning dopaminergic neurons mediated a change that subsequently influenced behavior even when dopaminergic systems were blocked. Although schizophrenia may be related to hyperfunctioning of dopamine, neuroleptic drugs, which block dopamine receptors on their first administration, do not have therapeutic effects for a number of days. The results of the pimozide experiments may resolve this paradox.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Beninger, R J -- Hahn, B L -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jun 17;220(4603):1304-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6857251" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Selective pharmacological inhibition of thromboxane A2 synthesis did not prevent arachidonate-induced aggregation of human platelets in vitro. Prevention was instead achieved by a combination of thromboxane A2 inhibitors with low concentrations of aspirin. The latter partially reduced the proaggregatory cyclooxygenase products that accumulated when thromboxane A2 synthesis was blocked. The aspirin concentrations did not affect per se either platelet aggregation or prostacyclin synthesis in cultured human endothelial cells. The combination of thromboxane synthetase inhibitors with low doses of aspirin may offer greater antithrombotic potential than either drug alone.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Bertele, V -- Falanga, A -- Tomasiak, M -- Dejana, E -- Cerletti, C -- de Gaetano, G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Apr 29;220(4596):517-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6682245" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: BACON is a computer program that simulates some of the important processes of scientific discovery. When provided with data about temperatures before and after two substances are brought into contact, the program infers the concept of specific heat and arrives at Black's law of temperature equilibrium. Comparison of BACON's discovery methods with historical records of Black's work casts light on the relation between data-driven and theory-driven discovery.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Bradshaw, G F -- Langley, P W -- Simon, H A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Dec 2;222(4627):971-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17776217" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A genetic recombinant within the major histocompatibility (B) complex of the chicken has revealed the chromosomal subregion effecting resistance to Marek's disease--a malignant lymphoma induced by a herpesvirus. The recombinant, BF21-G19, occurred spontaneously among the progeny of a male heterozygous for resistant BF21-G21 and susceptible BF19-G19 haplotypes. Exposure to Marek's disease of families segregating for the recombinant showed that this new F-G arrangement conferred a level of resistance equivalent to that of the resistant parental haplotype. Thus, a gene, or genes, within or closely linked to the B-F region of the B complex appears to be responsible for the observed resistance to Marek's disease.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Briles, W E -- Briles, R W -- Taffs, R E -- Stone, H A -- CA12796/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Feb 25;219(4587):977-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6823560" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Monkeys in which nerves innervating the flexor muscles of the forearm and hand (the ulnar or the median nerve) had been surgically cross-united with the nerve innervating the extensor muscles (the radial nerve), and vice versa, showed excellent (ulnar-radial crosses) to moderate (median-radial crosses) control of movement performance after regeneration. Antagonistic movement responses were seen occasionally, but these were corrected almost immediately. Stimulation of the crossed nerves showed that they had innervated the antagonistic muscle groups. The results reveal the capacity of the primate central nervous system to adapt to gross disturbances imposed on the execution of movements by changes in peripheral innervation.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Brinkman, C -- Porter, R -- Norman, J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Apr 22;220(4595):438-40.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6836289" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Female treehoppers (Publilia reticulata Van Duzee) modify their parental care behavior in the presence of ants. Females with untended young remain with their original brood, but females from ant-tended colonies readily desert their first brood and produce additional clutches. Care by female treehoppers, in the absence of ants, increases the probability that a colony will produce some survivors, but ant attendance greatly increases the number of surviving nymphs.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Bristow, C M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Apr 29;220(4596):532-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17816224" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Intracellular recordings were obtained from inner hair cells located in the lower basal turn of the guinea pig cochlea. At low sound pressure levels the inner hair cells were highly frequency selective, producing receptor potentials only in response to sound frequencies between about 16 and 24 kilohertz. Electrical stimulation of efferent nerves in the crossed olivocochlear bundle markedly reduced these receptor potentials while causing little change in the resting membrane potential. At high sound levels, where cells responded to an increasingly wider range of sound frequencies, stimulation was less effective in reducing receptor potentials. Since the crossed olivocochlear bundle primarily innervates outer hair cells, these results support an outer hair cell contribution to the most sensitive response region of inner hair cells.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Brown, M C -- Nuttall, A L -- Masta, R I -- NS-05785/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- NS-07106/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- NS-15107/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- etc. -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Oct 7;222(4619):69-72.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6623058" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Oral administration of 13-cis-retinoic acid (40 or 160 milligrams per kilogram of body weight daily) significantly reduced the inflammation associated with developing and established adjuvant arthritis, an experimentally induced arthritis in rats that resembles human rheumatoid arthritis. The amount of collagenase secreted in tissue culture by adherent cells isolated from the inflamed joints of adjuvant rats treated with 13-cis-retinoic acid also decreased as compared to the amount secreted by cells from vehicle-treated adjuvant rats. Collagenase is important in the joint destruction accompanying rheumatoid arthritis. The successful use of retinoids in the treatment of this proliferative but nonmalignant disorder demonstrates a new application of these compounds.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Brinckerhoff, C E -- Coffey, J W -- Sullivan, A C -- AM14780/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- P60 AM20641/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Aug 19;221(4612):756-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6308759" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The intracellular pH (pH(i))of encysted gastrula-stage embryos of the brine shrip, Artemia, as previously shown by in vivo phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, increases by more than 1 unit during arousal from cryptobiotic dormancy and decreases by the same amount during reinduction of dormancy. These changes in pH(i) are now shown to be a fundamental regulator of the transitions between dormancy and metabolism: acidification of activated embryo pH(i) by more than 1 unit with carbon dioxide induced a state comparable to natural dormancy, while alkalinization of dormant embryo pH(i) with the weak base ammonia terminated natural dormancy. This demonstration of pH(i)-mediated regulation of cryptobiotic dormancy extends the known scope for pH(i) as a regulator of development to include multicellular stages of the metazoan life cycle.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Busa, W B -- Crowe, J H -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jul 22;221(4608):366-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17798891" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: There is ground for concern that the British research and development effort, which is of considerable size, may not be well distributed. In some areas of intense scientific effort, commercial priorities tend to be forgotten. Too many of the units of the economic system are backward in understanding what science can offer and inefficient in using the opportunities which it provides. Evidence suggests that the successful use of science depends on the overall quality of management rather than specifically on its degree of scientific knowledge.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Carter, C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Mar 18;219(4590):1295-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17735594" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

The cells are found in different positions in the animal, however, and differ in neuronal branching, connectivity, and function. These structural and functional differences are not seen when cells are placed in similar positions by mutation or laser-induced damage. Thus, some, but probably not all, of the differentiated properties of these cells are a consequence of their cellular environment.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Chalfie, M -- Thomson, J N -- Sulston, J E -- AI19399/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- GM30997/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jul 1;221(4605):61-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6857263" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The defensive siphon and gill withdrawal reflex of Aplysia is a simple reflex mediated by a well-defined neural circuit. This reflex exhibits classical conditioning when a weak tactile stimulus to the siphon is used as a conditioned stimulus and a strong shock to the tail is used as an unconditioned stimulus. The siphon withdrawal component of this reflex can be differentially conditioned when stimuli applied to two different sites on the mantle skin (the mantle shelf and the siphon) are used as discriminative stimuli. The differential conditioning can be acquired in a single trial, is retained for more than 24 hours, and increases in strength with increased trials. Differential conditioning can also be produced within the field of innervation of a single cluster of sensory neurons (the LE cluster) since two separate sites on the siphon skin can serve as discriminative stimuli. The finding that two independent afferent inputs that activate a common set of interneurons and motor neurons can be differentially conditioned restricts the possible cellular loci involved in the associative learning.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Carew, T J -- Hawkins, R D -- Kandel, E R -- 5KO2 M0081/PHS HHS/ -- 5KO5 MH18558/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- NS 12744/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- etc. -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jan 28;219(4583):397-400.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6681571" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A commercial alpha-amylase inhibitor with potent inhibitory activity in vitro was used in a randomized double-blind, cross-over clinical trial in six nonobese, healthy adult males. In these subjects, this inhibitor had no effect on the response of blood glucose, insulin, or breath hydrogen to a standardized starch meal. It is concluded that this formulation has no effect on starch digestion in humans.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Carlson, G L -- Li, B U -- Bass, P -- Olsen, W A -- 5P30 AM 26659/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- AM 13927/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- AM 21668/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jan 28;219(4583):393-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6184780" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Transmission electron microscope study of a chondritic interplanetary dust particle has revealed the presence of epsilon iron-nickel carbide, a low- temperature carbide previously encountered only in metallurgical studies. In these studies in-carbide was synthesized by carburization of iron or nickel grains in a stream of carbon monoxide or carbon monoxide plus hydrogen. Similar carburization of an iron-nickel metal in situ may have produced in-carbide during particle heating on atmospheric entry or in solar orbit. Alternatively, the epsilon-carbide may be a by-product of Fischer-Tropsch reactions in the solar nebula. Such reactions have been proposed as the mechanism of hydrocarbon formation in the early solar system.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Christoffersen, R -- Buseck, P R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Dec 23;222(4630):1327-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17773335" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Of 76 cutaneously activated neurons recorded from the ventral posterior thalamus of awake, behaving monkeys, nine were weakly excited by innocuous skin stimulation and responded maximally only when noxious mechanical cutaneous stimuli were delivered within small, contralateral receptive fields. These results show that neurons capable of encoding the spatial and temporal features of noxious stimuli are located in the ventral posterior thalamus of the awake primate.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Casey, K L -- Morrow, T J -- NS 12581/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Aug 12;221(4611):675-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6867738" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: For several weeks before each eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1981 and 1982, viscous magma rising in the feeder conduit inflated the lava dome and shoved the crater floor laterally against the immobile crater walls, producing ground cracks and thrust faults. The rates of deformation accelerated before eruptions, and thus it was possible to predict eruptions 3 to 19 days in advance. Lack of deformation outside the crater showed that intrusion of magma during 1981 and 1982 was not voluminous.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Chadwick, W W Jr -- Swanson, D A -- Iwatsubo, E Y -- Heliker, C C -- Leighley, T A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Sep 30;221(4618):1378-80.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17759008" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Extracellular single-unit recording techniques were used to test the ability of proglumide to block cholecystokinin-induced excitation of rat midbrain dopaminergic neurons and dopamine-sensitive prefrontal cortex cells. Intravenous and iontophoretic proglumide administration consistently blocked cholecystokinin-induced excitations while having no effect on glutamic acid-induced increases in activity. This selective blockade of central cholecystokinin effects by proglumide suggests that this drug may be valuable for studying the possible role of cholecystokinin as a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator in the central nervous system.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Chiodo, L A -- Bunney, B S -- MH-25642/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- MH-28849/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- NS-07136/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Mar 25;219(4591):1449-51.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6828873" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The rate of increase of population in less developed countries accelerated rapidly from 1850 to 1960 because of a rapid decline in mortality while fertility remained high. In the 1960's, the birth rate as a whole began to decline more rapidly than the death rate--very rapidly in some populations, most notably that of China, more gradually in others, and not at all in some of the poorest populations. The momentum of growth implies continued increase in populations for several decades even in countries where fertility has fallen the most, and very large additional increases where there has been no decline in the rate of childbearing.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Coale, A J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Aug 26;221(4613):828-32.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6879179" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Extracts of seeds and leaves of the tropical legume Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. (the pigeon pea) elicited the accumulation of three phytoalexins when applied as droplets to superficially wounded leaves of the plant. The active component was purified and identified as sucrose. Phytoalexin accumulation was proportional to the logarithm of the concentration of sucrose applied, with maxima ranging from 338 to 455 micrograms per gram (fresh weight) of leaf tissue. The sucrose concentrations required to elicit half these amounts ranged from 20 to 35 micrograms per milliliter, but other sugars had little effect even at 1000 micrograms per milliliter. The elicitor activity of sucrose was abolished by actinomycin D, puromycin, and cycloheximide at a concentration of 10 micrograms per milliliter or greater, suggesting that gene derepression is required for expression of the phytoalexin response.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Cooksey, C J -- Garratt, P J -- Dahiya, J S -- Strange, R N -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jun 24;220(4604):1398-400.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17730656" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Brief deprivation of vision after unilateral lesions of the frontal eye field prevents the appearance of contralateral inattention to visual, auditory, and somatosensory stimuli. The forced circling that accompanies inattention, however, is not affected. An equivalent preoperative period in the dark only partly reduces inattention symptoms. Visual deprivation does not reduce or prevent inattention resulting from lesions of the superior colliculus.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Crowne, D P -- Richardson, C M -- Ward, G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Apr 29;220(4596):527-30.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6836298" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
