Notes: The corrosion behavior of metal powder compacts of different densities made from AISI 316 stainless steel prealloyed powder, heat-treated at different temperatures and times was investigated. Microcharacterisation of polished and fracture surfaces was performed by scanning electron microscopy. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis was used to identify precipitated phases. The anodic and cathodic polarization curves in 1 N sulfuric acid were compared with those of a wrought alloy of similar composition. A distinct difference in the electrochemical behaviour of the powdermetallurgical and the wrought alloy was found. This was attributed to enhanced precipitation of intermetallic phases in the P/M-alloy due to grain-size and density factors.

Description / Table of Contents: Passivity and pitting of unalloyed steel in eutectic sodium/potassium nitrite meltStationary potential-current-diagrams of mild steel in eutectic sodium-potassium-nitrate melt were studied. Pitting was found in the presence of sodium-chloride in concentrations exceeding 0.035 mole/kg. Iron initially dissolved from the pits as ferrous ions, but was subsequently deposited as ferric oxide in and above the pits. The pit growth followed a cubic time law.

Notes: This paper discusses the electrochemical behavior and corrosivity of aqueous sulfidic solutions with reference to iron and carbon steel. The chemistry of aqueous sulfidic solutions is reviewed with particular emphasis on stability of various sulfur species in aqueous solutions as a function of pH and solution potential. The thermodynamic predictions of corrosion processes for iron in sulfidic solution are discussed in terms of the potential pH equilibrium diagrams. Considerable discussion of the corrosion and electrochemical behavior of iron in sulfidic solutions includes the role of solution composition on corrosion and polarization behavior. The influence of surface films on corrosion in these systems is also discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the role solution composition on hydrogen absorption and embrittlement of iron and carbon steel.

Description / Table of Contents: Dielektrische Eigenschaften und Korrosionsschutzwirkung einiger bleipigmentierter Grundierungen in Salzlösungen. II.
Notes: Using a commercial capacitance bridge the capacitance and dielectric properties of pigmented paint films were measured with a view to the possibility of forecasting the corrosion protection properties of such coatings. According to the results obtained with 8 red lead and 4 iron oxide pigmented primers on steel in sodium chloride and sodium perchlorate solutions the measured values of the capacitance and of the dissipation factor enable really pure and really good primers to be distinguished after only 3 days. However, it is not possible to grade high quality primers of different generic types from dielectric data, irrespective of the duration of exposure (up to 12 months). This finding is ascribed to the differences in the duration of the initial wetting and swelling period.

Notes: Results from laboratory atmospheric corrosion tests on samples of a carbon and a low-alloy steel, with and without pre-exposure (1, 3 and 12 months) in an out-door atmosphere are reported. The laboratory exposure was performed in SO2-containing (SO2-supply: 0.4 μg SO2 · cm-2 · h-1) and SO2-free atmospheres at 90% relative humidity and 22.0° C. The results clearly demonstrate that the influence of atmospheric SO2 on the instantaneous corrosion rate markedly de-decreases with increasing pre-exposure. Comparisons of corrosion rates calculated from out-door exposures and laboratory exposure tests with and without periodical wettings show that the atmospheric corrosion in the main proceeds during or following periods of atmospheric precipitation or condensation, i. e. under conditions of an apparantly wet rust layer. A synergistic effect of SO2 and periodical wettings was established. Due to the leaching of sulphate ions from the rust layer, immersion sequences (to simulate rainfall) throughout resulted in lower corrosion rates than the simulation of dew by short spraying sequences. The corrosion of pre-exposed samples could be related to the amount of sulphate leached from the rust during immersions.

Description / Table of Contents: Stress corrosion cracking of steel St 37 and the aluminium alloy AlMg 3 by dust-bearing flue-gases from rotary cement kilnsInternals of electrofilters for dedusting flue-gases from rotary cement kilns were destroyed in several cases by stress corrosion cracking. Collector plates of steel St 37 exhibited serious corrosion damages after only two years' operation at temperatures between 60 and 120° C; in these cases an approximately uniform intercrystalline attack had been superimposed by local trough-like to pit-like corrosion. A frame of AlMg 3 for spray-electrodes fails by intercrystalline grain segregation after ribbon-like precipitates had formed on the grain-boundaries during 6 years' operation at 100° C. The characteristic types of destruction could be demonstrated on the surfaces of open cracks and artificially prepared ruptures and with the aid of metallographic specimens. Potential methods for increasing corrosion resistance are indicated.

Description / Table of Contents: Improvements in lead alloys for chemical plants - II: Corrosion testingWithin the scope of a R&D programme concentrated on the development of finegrained lead alloys for chemical plants, the corrosion resistance of various lead alloys has been tested in boiling H2SO4. The anti-corrosive properties of copper-alloyed lead, which were unstable in a 70% H2SO4, could be stabilized by a grain refinement of the casting with selenium, i. e. the corrosion resistance was improved and rendered more uniform. Further additions of tin and palladium still doubled the corrosion resistance. Small amounts of silver (0.01%) had a positive, but not decisive effect. In a 50% H2SO4, additions of tin have already an effect similar to that of selenium, whereas palladium does not further increase this positive influence. Additions of tellurium had different effects. The corrosion resistance of alloys containing 4% Sb, which is satisfactory in a 50% H2SO4, is deteriorated by an increased As-content. Measurements of the current density and potential revealed a nearly completely suppressed active current peak for Pb-4% Sb as well as lead alloyed with slight amounts of nickel; besides, both alloys showed, mainly in a 70% H2SO4, a rising corrosion loss with passing time. It may accordingly be supposed that in both cases the oxygen reduction was decisive for passivation, whilst with the other alloys under the aerating conditions used the hydrogen reduction was the most important cathodic reaction.

Notes: The cathodic protection effect of zinc in zinc pigmented coatings can be clearly recognized above a certain pigment concentration. According to the results obtained during potentiostatic polarization experiments such an effect can be expected above 90% Zn. This effect will still be present after 30 days in sodium chloride solution, provided the original concentration is 93%, while the protective effect is lossed after this time in the case of 91% Zn. The potentiostatic methods are clearly superiour to a resistance method used preferentially and can be recommended for formulation of coating materials and for testing such coating materials and coatings.

Description / Table of Contents: Electrochemical investigations into aluminium-rich intermetallic phasesAn electrochemical characterization has been made of Al3Fe, Al6Mn, Al3Mg2, Al2Cu and MgZn2 phases in chloride containing and chloride-free electrolytes of different pH values. The rupture potentials were determined and a study was made on hydrogen overvoltage and passivation behaviour. The results are used to interprete the corrosion behaviour of heterogeneous aluminium alloys. The good corrosion behaviour of low iron AlMn-alloys can be understood in terms of the high hydrogen-overvoltage on Al6Mn.

Notes: Investigations into the intergranular stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of unalloyed steel St 36 in carbonate-bicarbonate solutions have shown that SCC susceptibility is limited to the potential range of magnetite formation for both constant load and constant strain rate tests. Experiments to determine the creep behaviour of the steel in the corrosive solution show that creep rates corresponding to the critical strain rates in the constant strain rate test occur during the crack initiation state after loading of the tensile specimen with a constant crack initiating load. These experimental findings establish, therefore, that critical crack initiating strain rates of the unalloyed steel are always present during the initial stage for SCC regardless of the test method used. The cause of crack initiation at grain boundaries can be attributed to the fact that the magnetite layers feature faults and grooves in the oxide along the grain boundaries in the entire critical potential range. These oxide grooves, which are also observed on unstressed steel, cause a notch-like localized corrosion attack. The depth and crack tip radius of the resultant grain boundary notches appear to be sufficient to initiate propagating cracks under the single action of predominately pure stresses without macroscopic deformation of the steel. This does not necessarily mean, however, that a purely stress induced corrosion process is involved, for it is not out of question that the concentration of stress in the base of grain boundary notches is sufficient to cause localized deformation processes required for crack initiation.

Notes: The performance of the electrochemical technique first developed by Mattsson and Kučera, has been studied under long term exposure of a zinc cell at the test site Birkenes in Southern Norway. This site has a large impact of long range transported sulphur pollutants, and the measurements have also been used to evaluate the question of possible corrosion effects from these pollutants on zinc. The cell has performed well for almost the whole measuring period, small shortcircuiting periods may be excluded with negligible error. Analysis of the electrochemical and environmental data show significant corrosion effects on zinc from the precipitation as such and also indicate qualitatively short term corrosion effects from rural levels of sulphur pollutants. The study has shown that the electrochemical technique is a promising method for providing informations about short term variation of the corrosion rate and time of wetness under various environmental conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of flow velocity and sodium chloride concentration on the oxygen corrosion of unalloyed steels in waterCorrosion of mild steel in aerated water normally leads to pitting, and to an enrichment of anions within the pits. Even HCO3- ions can support localized corrosion. The intensity of this is remarkably increased by chloride ions. In equilibrium water with Ca2+ and HCO3- ions and about 40 ppm free CO2 protective rust layers are formed after about 500 hs exposure not depending on flow rate and salt concentration. These layers decrease the mean corrosion rate to about 0.1 mm/a, but do not prevent localized corrosion. Protective passive layers with extremely low corrosion rates are formed in flowing water with Ca2+ and HCO3- ions and about 40 ppm free CO2. The minimum flow rate can be estimated for a 3/4 inch pipe to lie between 0.35 and 1.5 m/s.Investigations with water containing 40 ppm free CO2 without Ca2+ at pH 4.7 and with NaHCO3 (pH 7.2) show at low pH high corrosion rates - as expected -, and at pH 7.2 formation of protective layers with poor reproducibility in comparison with the situation in equilibrium water. Thus, Ca2+ ions support the protective properties of rust layers. HCO3- ions are necessary for the formation of protective layers because these are not formed in pure NaCl solutions.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion behaviour of iron, zinc, aluminium and chromium nickel steel in the system methanol/water/hydrogen chlorideThe influence of water on the corrosion behaviour of pure iron, zinc, aluminium and normal 18 9 CrNi steel in hydrogen chloride containing methanol has been studied. The immersion tests and the tracing of potential dynamic current density potential curves were carried out at 20°C, oxygen being excluded.Even small quantities of water may give rise to a considerable decrease of corrosion rates. This effect is attributed in the case of iron, zinc and chromium nickel steel to increased hydrogen overvoltage, which exhibits a sudden jump between 0 and 15 Vol.-% water. Heterogenous cathodic limiting reaction currents are observed on iron. In the case of aluminium the change in corrosion rates toward lower values is caused by the inhibited anodic partial reaction. Addition of 5 Vol.-% water gives rise to a displacement of the pitting potential by approx. 400 mV in the positive direction, accompanied by a decreasing corrosion rate by about three orders. Anodic polarization of chromium nickel steel reveals that this steel can be passivated only beyond a critical water content of approx. 50 Vol.-%. A further increase of the water content gives rise to a sudden decrease of the critical passivation current density and the passivity current density. Simultaneously, the passivation potential moves toward more negative values.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of thiourea and its derivatives as pickling inhibitors on hydrogen pickup, degree of inhibition and fatigue load of carbon steel during pickling in acidsThe influence of additions of thiourea (TU), N-methyl-TU, N, N′-tetramethyl-TU, N-phenyl-TU, N, N′-diethyl-TU and N, N′-diphenyl-TU upon the acid pickling of mild steel (1,0 M H2SO4 at 50° C) was investigated. Measured were inhibitor efficiency, uptake of hydrogen and alternating bending strength of the samples as functions of inhibitor type and inhibitor concentration. With all inhibitors a maximum of inhibitor efficiency and alternating bending strength and a minimum of hydrogen uptake was found in the same inhibitor concentration range of about 0,001 M. Compared to pickling in pure sulfuric acid at this optimum concentration the inhibitor efficiency is between 95,2 and 98,4%, the decrease of the hydrogen uptake between 8,6 and 63,3% and the increase of the alternating bending strength between 20,0 and 43,4%, depending upon the kind of inhibitor. The alternating bending strength increases roughly linearly with decreasing hydrogen content of the samples. In the optimum concentration range the inhibitor efficiency and the alternating bending strength increase, the hydrogen uptake decreases roughly linearly with increasing adsorption area or increasíng molecular weight of the inhibitors.

Description / Table of Contents: Observations concerning nitridation of refractory austenitic materials in air and combustion gasesDamage due to nitridation has frequently encountered on radiation tubes of refractory materials used in industrial furnace construction. Nitridation occurs although the material surface is covered with an oxide layer. Investigations on specimens annealed in air for extended periods have shown that nitridation of materials numbers 1.4848 and 1.4840 starts after an annealing duration dependent on temperature and specimen geometry. At 900° C it begins after approx. 25000 hours, at 1000° C after approx. 1000 hours and at 1100° C after approx. only 100 hours, convex surface zones being preferentially affected. Nitrogen adsorption first results in a transformation from M23C6 to M2(C, N). The latter subsequently grows by chromium extraction from the matrix. The M6C-carbide found in these materials, too, and corresponding to the approximate formula (Cr3Ni2Si)C does not undergo structural changes by nitridation although carbon is partially substituted by nitrogen.Nitridation can probably be attributed to repeated cracking and healing of the oxide layer after a critical oxide layer thickness has been exceeded; this critical thickness is estimated to be approximately 20-30 microns.

Notes: The possibilities for transport of sulfur through preformed oxide scales by both solution-diffusion and molecular gas (24) permeation mechanisms are examined thermodynamically to establish the limiting conditions under which each is viable. The results are tested, using nickel and cobalt specimens, and it is concluded that, although both mechanisms may operate in parallel, the permeation of gas molecules is the more dangerous since it can operate over wider ranges of gas atmosphere composition. The permeation of SO2 molecules throu through oxide scales growing on cobalt is clearly demonstrated.

Notes: A fracture mechanics approach has been used to evaluate the critical stress intensity factor in the corrosive environment (KIscc) of a 1.5 Ni—Cr—Mo steel in the temperature range of 50 to 100° C. The KIscc value has been found to decrease with increasing temperature of the corrodent. The microscopic and macroscopic features of crack propagation under stress corrosion conditions have been discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of corrosive media on the behaviour of FR compositesAqueous media are absorbed by resins and composites. It is possible to describe the sorption behaviour of glass fiber reinforced composites knowing the sorption behaviour of the resin fraction and the absorption in the volume of interfaces and flaws.Concentration changes lead to dimensional changes; these swelling strains of anisotropically reinforced layers can be determined from the swelling behaviour of the matrix resin. In general concentration distributions during diffusion processes cause residual stresses (swelling stresses).Swelling strains and swelling stresses have to be superimposed to a mechanical load. The phenomenon of the „stress-crack-corrosion“ also occurring in polymers can be explained by residual stresses due to diffusion processes.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of weathering on the corrosion behaviour of unalloyed and low-alloy steelsAccelerated weathering tests with plain carbon steel and low-alloy steels show that the influence of weathering is of considerable importance for the atmospheric corrosion. Attention has to be paid that the steel surfaces are never wet over a longer period of time. The faster the steels will be dry, the better is the long time behaviour of these materials. Frequent short wet periods, followed by dry phases lead to the formation of an increasingly better protective layer. By favorable weathering conditions the influence of the composition of the alloys is comparatively small.Metallographic and electrochemical tests further show that the corrosion protection is not only due to the formation of a compact macroscopic layer. Local passivation effects are significant as well.
