Description: Abstract: Palatinerpeton kraetschmeri n. gen., n. sp., from the lower Rotliegend (Lower Permian: Asselian equivalent) of the Saar-Nahe Basin is described on the basis of the holotype. The holotype preserves portions of the skull roof in ventral view, parts of the palate and postcranial skeleton, and the complete lower jaw. A preliminary phylogenetic analysis of the Edopoidea and Eryopoidea suggests that Palatinerpeton represents a plesiomorphic taxon among the Eryopoidea and cannot be referred to any known family. The skull of Palatinerpeton shares a few noteworthy resemblances with more derived, stratigraphically more recent taxa: It shares with Lysipterygium the presence of a jugal process on the anterior margin of the postorbital, with the Melosauridae the presence of an alary process of the jugal, and with one melosaurid and the Cochleosauridae the separation of the maxilla and quadratojugal by the jugal.

Description: Abstract: In the southwestern part of the Mainz basin near Fürfeld a small outcrop of Palaeogene sediments was exposed during road works. It is situated in the so called Fürfeld bay and contains an alternation of greensand with pelitic sediment. Within the pelitic sediment an intercalated marlstone layer bears bivalves and fish remains. The sequence represents the transition between the marine coastal sand and the basin clay of the Rupelian. The Fischschiefer = M.Rupelton)/Upper Rupelton boundary is situated within the section. At depositional time the coast was sitvated 800 m to the north. The pelitic sediment is formed under stable coastal environment during sedimentation ofthe late Fischschiefer. Dysaerobic soupground led to a mixotrophic lucinid shell fauna. The overlaying greensand represents reworking of sediment during the beginning of the Upper Rupelton transgression.

Description: Abstract: A provisional palynological organic matter classification is applied for the palynofacies from lacustrine sediments of the uppermost Carboniferous and lowermost Permian of Southwest-Germany (Rotliegend). Sedimentary organic matter of mainly higher biological origin is determined microscopically. The definition of three fixed major- and variable subdivisions led to the creation of seven palynofacies types. These PF-Types are in addition graphically defined by a ternary diagram, a palynofacies-triangle. 30 lake horizons of different stratigraphic positions and their surrounding environments were studied and the results compared to each other. A preliminary model provides an overview on relations between PF-Types and corresponding environments. Differences in the palynofacies composition of the pelagial facies help to characterise the relative size of fossil lakes. The results from the sedimentary sequences of whole lake successions in comparison are partially blurred and have to be analysed separately. In these successions the complete development of one lake is documented by the palynofacies. The PF-analyses provide valuable data and lead to more accurate reconstructions of fossil lake environments, especially its inhabitants.

Description: Die Niederterrassenaquifere der „Goldenen Meile” und des Unteren Ahrtales zwischen Bad Breisig, Sinzig und Bad Neuenahr stellen ergiebige Porengrundwasserleiter dar.
Description: Abstract: The aquifers of the „Goldene Meile” and of the Lower Ahr between Bad Breisig, Sinzig and Bad Neuenahr abound in water. Several types of groundwater are found. The physical and chemical qualities of ground waters differ between south and north part of the investigated area. The hydraulic system is dominated by the groundwaters of der Ahr Valley. The chemical differences are caused by ascent of acid mineralwaters, in the Ahr Valley. In the south part of the „Goldene Meile” there is no recognizable change of ground water quality caused by acid mineral water.

Description: Abstract: Near the confluence of the rivers Lahn into the Rhine southeast of Koblenz, the strata of the Lower Devonian succession are well exposed in many outcrops and quarries. A location named „Hohenrheiner Hütte” near the gorge of Ruppertsklamm is mentioned as locus typicus of the „Hohenrhein-Schichten“ sensu Maurer (1882) of Upper Emsian age. Due to an unfortunate description of this location by FoLLmann (1925), a quarry in which the Laubach-Schichten are actually exposed, but are designated as Hohenrhein-Schichten. Kocn (1880) also describes distinctive Emsquarzit at the same location. Thus, three different strata of the Upper Emsian are given the same location „Hohenrheiner Hütte“. Field investigations were made for the construction of a cross-section showing the structural setting of the strata, and to assure their correct stratigraphical classification, a distinction by fossils and lithofacies was made. The resulting locus typicus of the Hohenrhein-Schichten is on the northwest side of the Ruppertsklamm, that of the Laubach- Schichten is found southeastwards of the Hohenrhein-Schichten directly at the road to Bad Ems. These two outcrops are set on the southeastern flank of the southeastvergent Niederlahnstein-Anticline where the Emsquarzit is also exposed. More southeastwards faults seperate the Niederlahnstein-Anticline from the overthrusted Oberlahnstein-Emsquarzit-Anticline, where even youngest Lower Emsian (Nellenköpfchen- Schichten) can be found. The Oberlahnstein-Anticline separates the flank from the core of the Mosel-Syncline.

Description: Abstract: A 7.2 m thick fossiliferous section of oligocene coastal sands was examined in a sand pit near Siefersheim (Mainz Basin, Germany). The sedimentology, the microfacies, the fabrics of carbonate cements and the fossil record suggest a sedimentation on a steep sub- to intertidal gravel- or sandbeach. So on the one hand vadose Mg-calcitic beachrock cements (submicrocrystalline cement and meniscus cement) occur only in the underlying rhyolite-gravel beds. On the other hand cemented bioclast sands of the capping sand layers show early diagenetic recrystallized fibrous cements and the top rhyolite-rubble and breccia beds contain late diagenetic Fe-calcitic drusy mosaic cements. For palaeocommunity-analysis the fossil record was applied. As a result five invertebrate- palaeocommunities with high contents of sessil suspension feeders and moderate diversities could be identified. They show an increase in water depth from about 0 to 25 m from the basal layer to the top, corresponding with a sea level rise of about 35 m. Summing up, it may be said that the sediments examined represent a gradual transgressive development in a partly protected bay in the neighbourhood of a rhyolithic cliff. The biostratigraphical correlation of the Siefersheim section with other Mainz Basin coastal sand profiles and the basin facies of the Middle Rupelian clay (the so called fish shale) was conducted on the basis of foraminifers.

SPANDEL (1909) first described them as Orbulina bituminosa and interpreted them as foraminifera. The prefered interpretation of the spheres is that they are Crustacean eggs because of similarities both in terms of size and internal structure.

Description: Abstract: Biostratigraphic fossil research in the Koblenz-area (Lower Devonian, Lower Emsian, Rhenish Massiv) summarizes rieh Bivalvia faunas mainly from the upper part of the Vallendar substage. The „Nellenköpfchen-Schichten" present tidal environment with changing sedimentary conditions. Muddy Sediments occasionally contain numerous Bivalvia, homalonotid trilobites and burrows of homalonotids. The fossil record of the massive sandstones is dominated by shell-beds (induced by hurricanes) containing mainly broken valves of non-autochthonous Bivalvia and brachiopods. Well preserved Palaeoneilo Maureri (Bivalvia) possibly show nearly allochthonous living conditions. In contrast to the tidal embedding of the Nellenköpfchen locality the increment of normal marine Sedimentation with brachiopod dominated shell-beds (Chonetinae) can be observed between Koblenz-Moselweiß and Koblenz-Lay.

Description: Slightly humified Sphagnum peat is a valuable resource that is difficult to be substituted in professional horticulture. In West- and Central Europe, the stocks are nearly exhausted and peat is increasingly imported. At the long run, Sphagnum moss peat and virgin Sphagnum bogs may only survive in nature reserves or in areas that are technically and commercially inaccessible. Time has, therefore, come for peat extraction to develop into sustainable peat cultivation: paludiculture. Experiences with Sphagnum-harvesting and restoration of cut-over bogs indicate that a rotation culture of young Sphagnum peat is technically possible. A future paludiculture implies the identification of optimal conditions and Sphagnum taxa for peat accumulation, the development of adequate cultivation and retrieval techniques, an estimation of necessary areas and economics, and an assessment of possible positive and negative side effects. This paper presents a review of these aspects. Suitable areas for paludiculture in Central-Europe may include cut-over bogs and other exhausted open-cast mining areas.

Description: The Andes Mountains developed along the western margin of SouthAmerica in response to the subduction of the oceanic Nazca Plate below the South American plate since the Jurassic times. It is considered as one of the classic examples of a mountain chain developed in an active continental margin. Although their present physiography is given by the Andean tectonics, the Central Andes are the result of complex interplay of Precambrian and Paleozoic terrane accretion and phases of compression and extension. The Puna and Eastern Cordillera represent key elements in the tectonic evolution of the Central Andes. The present study covers a region of the northern Puna and Eastern Cordillera extending from approximately 22°S to 24°S and 65 °W to 66°30'W in Argentina. About 1200 km of seismic lines were interpreted and were used as a geometrical constraint for the construction of a 3D gravity model of the area.

Description: Alaska carries a great variety of wetland plant communities, above all the Alaska Peninsula is very rich in mires. One of these mire complexes (muskeg) in the vicinity of the Mt. Peulic Lodge (Lake Ugashik) was investigated by vegetation studies and documented by phytosociological relevés according to the principles of the BRAUN-BLANQUET-school. The mire vegetation was dominated by dwarf shrubs, sedges, and mosses. 9 different vegetation types were ascertained on the basis of topography and floristical composition. These were blanket bog-like structures, elavated hummocks, lateral sites of hummocks, interspersed runnels and hollows, game pathes, two different types of flat mosscarpets, lawn-like vegetation structures, and plant associations of small pools.

Description: In der Zentralen Dobrogea in Ostrumänien liegen die östlichsten europäischen Vorkommen oberjurassischer Mikrobialith/Kieselschwamm-Gesteine (Spongiolithe).
Description: The Central Dobrogea in Eastern Romania exhibits the easternmost occurrence of Upper Jurassic microbialite/siliceous sponge facies (spongiolite facies) in Europe. The spongiolites are part of the Lower to Upper Oxfordian Casimcea Fm. which was deposited on a gently westward dipping carbonate platform (homoclinal ramp). This platform was surrounded by deep marine basins in the south, west and north, while to the east the existence of a land area with low relief is assumed. The gently sloping carbonate ramp shows an E-W facies zonation. A lagoonal belt is followed towards the open sea by a coral patch reef belt, a bioclastic-oolitic sand belt, and a spongiolitic belt. The lagoonal belt is rich in structureless to laminated microbial crusts, which occasionally exhibit prism cracks and comprise bioclasts and dark lithoclasts ("black pebbles"). Crusts are accompanied by oncoidal wackestones with Bacinella-Lithocodium oncoids. C/adocorops/s-cayeuxiid floatstones are transitional to the facies of the coral patch reef belt. Seaward of the coral patch reef belt, bioclastic and oolitic sands occupy the proximal middle ramp. The transition to deeper water is reflected by changes in sedimentary and faunal composition from moderately to poorly sorted bioclastic and intraclastic grainstones/rudstones, to oolitic sands, and eventually to fine grained bioclastic packstones. In these packstone areas, coral reef banks grew which are entirely different from coral reefs of the patch reef belt. They were constructed almost exclusively by thin laminoid fungiid corals (Microsolena sp., Comoseris sp. Thamnasteria sp.). Seaward adjacent to these packstone areas are sponge meadows with interspersed microbialite/siliceous sponge reefs. These are followed by monotonous bioclastic wackestones. Small mud mounds bearing siliceous sponge are intercalated. The different reef types occupied specific positions on the ramp. In general spongiolitic facies developed at a more distal and deeper position on the ramp than any coral-dominated facies. The development of the carbonate ramp started with a rapid transgression in Lower Oxfordian time. At the end of the transgressive phase sponge meadows could establish themselves at water depths below about 25 m. During the time of relative sea level high stand microbialite-siliceous sponge bioherms developed, interspersed into the sponge meadows. These spongiolitic reefs occasionally show peculiar ring shapes, a feature that is only observed in Romania. Their formation was most probably controlled by a preexisting uneven surface with subtle hollows. The spongiolitic bioherms had an early cemented microbialitic framework, which was settled by lithistid demosponges and hexactinellid sponges. After the death of the sponges, their skeletons were also calcified and microbially cemented. The ring-shaped bioherms developed on the distal middle ramp below fair weather wave base, where only during heavy storms waves could touch the bottom. On the outer ramp below storm wave base small thrombolitic mud mounds dominated by hexactinellid sponges developed at the same time. Landwards, on the middle ramp, the spongiolitic belt interfingered with bioclastic sands. In water depths of about 1 0 to 1 5 m very thin platy corals appeared forming wide biostromes (fungiid biostromes). One important reason why hermatypic corals did not substitute the siliceous sponge facies in deeper water as well might have been pulses of slightly elevated nutrient concentrations. These elevated nutrient concentrations stimulated growth of plankton, which reduced water transparency, limiting depth range of hermatypic corals and calcareous algae. On the other hand high water turbulence together with elevated rates of sediment input and sediment movement prevented siliceous sponges from growing in areas where fair weather waves influenced the sea-bottom. Regression started in late Oxfordian time and lagoonal and bioclastic facies of the inner ramp prograded to the west. During this phase coral patch reefs developed in very shallow and turbulent water and coral-stromatoporoid patch reefs grew on the proximal middle ramp. The microbialite-siliceous sponge association first disappeared in the eastern part of the Central Dobrogea. In the western part the spongiolitic association was substituted by coral-dominated associations only during the latest Oxfordian. All reef types bearing microbialites (all spongiolitic buildups and fungiid biostromes) developed during transgression or relative sea level highstand. Coral patch reefs in shallow water did establish themselves during the regressive phase. Two basic types of microbialite crusts are recognized in Central Dobrogea: Fenestral automicritic crusts and peloidal automicritic crusts. In fenestral automicritic crusts lamination is often indistinct and defined by dense intervals alternating with losely packed intervals where small linear arranged spar-cemented areas (fenestrae) occur. This crust type is exclusively observed in the spongiolitic belt on the outer ramp where it forms the primary 'framework' in the thrombolitic mudmounds and participates in the hexactinellid-dominated biostromes. In a slightly shallower position within the ring-shaped bioherms they play only a minor role. Peloidal automicritic crusts show a rhythmical lamination which originates from the alternation of spar-cemented peloidal intervals and thin micritic layers. The peloidal intervals have integrated a varying amount of detrital grains. A fine-grained variety of this crust type forms the rigid primary framework of the ring-shaped bioherms. Coarse-grained varieties, locally with an ooid portion, developed in somewhat shallower and more turbulent water in the fungiid biostromes and in the coral-stromatoporoid patch reefs. Like the formation of the different crust types, the early diagenesis of sponge skeletons together with their organic tissue is another example for a microbially induced formation of automicrites. In general two modes of cementation are distinguished, a dense aphanitic and a peloidal one. It is assumed that the mode of cementation of the siliceous sponges (lithistid demosponges and hexactinellids) depends on the taxonomic affiliation of the sponges and on the physical and chemical conditions of the environment where they lived and died. Lithistid demosponges always show a peloidal mode of preservation. Hexactinellids, from deep and very low energy settings, however, exhibit dense aphanitic cementation and complete preservation. In shallower, more turbulent zones (ring-shaped bioherms) they have a low preservation potential and are in general incompletely preserved with a coarse grained peloidal mode of cementation.
