Description: «With absolute honesty»: this is how Natalia Ginzburg worked in her editorial job at the Einaudi publishing house. Through documents from the Einaudi Archives in Turin and the Archivio del Novecento (Sapienza University), this book traces Ginzburg's editorial work in the postwar period, when she had major editorial responsibility and coordinated the translation of Proust’s Recherche. The correspondences with authors and translators restore a new profile of the writer, bringing to light the relevance of her intervention in narrative series, such as “Coralli” and “Gettoni”; the interaction between the professions of writer, editor and translator, from which recurring elements of poetics emerge; and the issues involved in being the only woman to have a decision-making role in the Einaudi editorial staff of the time.

Description: An abbot, a journalist, and a man of letters, Giovanni Pellegrino Dandi (1664–c. 1726) curated, during his frenetic activity, the columns of various literary periodicals. His writings immediately caught the attention of some of the leading Italian intellectuals of his time, from Lodovico Antonio Muratori to Antonio Vallisneri. While filling a gap in the coeval cultural press, Dandi’s publications, such as «Gran Giornale de’ Letterati» (1701–1704), were, in fact, a fraud. Rather than creating original works, Dandi appropriated writings that had been printed before, and were later forgotten by the readers. Jacopo Narros brings to light the documentation about Dandi’s cheatings, creating an entertaining narrative of the editorial nonchalance of this singular erudite, and outlining his fascinating figure of forger and plagiarist. Moreover, by investigating the relationship between the «gran sottisier» and the 17th and 18th century literary community, Narros shows the dynamism of the intellectual life of that period. In those years, erudites like Apostolo Zeno and Scipione Maffei were active in structuring new communicative strategies to transmit innovative scientific discoveries and literary experiences to their readership.

Description: Although Boccaccio’s name is rarely encountered in published works of Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912), traces of a constant reading and reuse of the Decameron have emerged and continue to emerge from the poet’s manuscripts. The article outlines the history of the already known contacts between the two authors and adds a new document: the unknown verse drama ‘Messer Gentile’, inspired by the novella X 4. This drama, designed as a one-act play with a prologue and three scenes, has been left unfinished: only the prologue and the first scene are preserved, but it is enough to appreciate some dynamics that characterize the rewriting process. A dense network of references to the most ancient Italian poetic tradition emerges from the dramatic lines, and among the manuscripts one discovers an experimental rhythmic prose composed of hendecasyllables arranged in a line that the study reconnects to the reform of modern tragic theater envisaged by Pascoli.

Description: It is not a heavenly, but rather a hellish Dante, who hovers over Ukrainian poetry of the twentieth century. He supports the persecuted rather than the adepts of the Soviet regime, who are mere functionaries. Dante leads the way for the stoic Ukrainian poets, such as Mykola Zerov, Iurij Klen, Vasyl’ Stus, and Lina Kostenko, who are fully aware of the risks they take in aspiring to longed-for moral freedom.

Description: One of the initiatives on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death, carried out in Bulgaria in October 2021, consisted in the publication of a monographic issue of the weekly Literaturen vestnik in a bilingual version with the title “Ancora attuale, sempre divino: Literaturen vestnik celebra Dante.” Among the thematic features contained in this issue, an important place is occupied by three surveys conducted among Bulgarian secondary school teachers, university lecturers and poets. The surveys aim to outline how Dante’s work is currently perceived and to comment on the fact that – unbeknownst to most people – the Divina Commedia has been excluded from the literature curricula since the 2018-19 academic year.

Description: This paper focuses on the anabasis and katabasis narratives inspired by Dante in the works of the most representative Polish romantics: Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855), Juliusz Słowacki (1809-1849), Zygmunt Krasiński (1812-1859) and Cyprian Kamil Norwid (1821-1883). It was the Divina Commedia which exercised the greatest influence on the poets, especially Inferno, which became a forerunner of the Polish reality itself. But whereas Dante’s Inferno is identified with the underworld, the Polish Romantics’ locus horridus coincides with the actual world. If the Dantesque journey is a katabasis to the underworld, the descent portrayed by Polish poets is an anabasis towards a volcano crater covered with lava and ice. Moreover, according to the martyrological view, the Polish reality in those days was not only a place of suffering and tribulation, but also of expiation, which was a preparation for the arrival of paradise on Earth.

Description: The article explores gender-neutral language strategies in Italian university documents, introducing “gender obfuscation” to avoid gender markers. Strategies discussed include using generic nouns, passive/impersonal verbs, and relative/indefinite pronouns. Inclusive language benefits are acknowledged, but complexity and reduced clarity are highlighted. The authors recommend inclusive language, including the unmarked masculine form for complex cases. Italian universities adoption of Gender Equality Plans (GEP) in response to European Commission directives is also discussed. Emphasis is placed on language attention in GEPs and collaboration with linguists for inclusivity and gender equality. Balancing language simplification with gender-inclusive objectives is recognized as a challenge.

Description: Poetry as a transterritory: theoretical-critical journeys This collective book has been conceived and organized with the aim of thinking of poetry as a genre that can be understood from the idea of territory, or from the tension between the territorialization–deterritorialization of languages in the creation process. At a general level, the authors propose that in the poetic dimension language opens up to broader conceptualizations such as the idea of transterritory: a territory that crosses other textual territories, deterritorializing them, but also a territory that allows itself to be crossed by other discourses, proposing nomadic territorializations. Poetry is the discourse which, by enhancing the possibilities of language at all its levels —those of sonority, words, syntax, semantics and discursive genre—makes it possible to operate territorial openings, which landmark or insinuate possible paths, and retrace the great tracks to proliferate in ramifications and allow to give way to divergent semantic, symbolic, ideological, affective, aesthetic and generic lines.

Description: Theoretical studies on literature and the methodology of literary criticism have always been a field of high intellectual "porosity" capable of opening up to diverse and novel disciplinary stimuli and expertise. However, this capacity, which is moreover a necessary characteristic of proper research, clashes with the rigidity of the disciplinary structure of the Italian university, based on rigid taxonomies of knowledge. Overcoming this rigidity is now desirable and necessary to release the innovative potential of the so-called frontier fields of study.

Description: This article deals with some specific characteristics of the Italo-Albanian (Arbëresh) verbal system, including the “presumptive” and “unfinished” past, but focuses especially on the expression of Aktionsart with the help of periphrases variously present, if not only marginally, in Balkan Albanian and already attested in the first Arbëresh grammars of the 19th century. The distribution of the periphrastic constructions with progressive and imminentive functions in a series of Italo-Albanian dialects is analysed on the basis of an initial overview of durative periphrases presented in Savoia (1991), but enriched by further research and integrated into a broader typological overview. The author hypothesises that the periphrases in question are not so much the result of linguistic contact with actual Italo-Romance varieties, but rather go back to the Balkan context of possibly Proto-Romance origin.

Description: Maximus the Greek (c. 1470-1555/1556), one of the most influential members of the Greek diaspora in Russia, arrived in Moscow from Constantinople with an official delegation (1518) and remained there until his death at the time of Ivan the Terrible. It was only in the second half of the last century that it was discovered Maximus the Greek must be identified with Michael Trivolis, a young Greek humanist educated in Florence at the end of the 15th century. Like many of his contemporaries, Trivolis had been influenced by the preaching of Girolamo Savonarola. Systematic research on the relation between the work of Savonarola and the humanists close to him and the writings of Maximus the Greek has not yet been conducted, but the data collected to date allow us to establish a close relationship within the context of certain religious, philosophical, and social themes. The examination of a text dedicated to the exercise of power by emperors and princes, the Discourse more extended, written by Maximus the Greek by the time of Ivan the Terrible, shows not only direct correlations with some of Savonarola’s cantos, but also the presence of images and themes from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy and Cristoforo Landino’s Comento, starting with the idea of empire. The collections of Maximus the Greek’s writings, in which this Discourse appears, were widely disseminated, and left a deep mark on Russian culture.

Description: When speaking of narrativity, a widely held idea in various disciplinary fields that identity is essentially narrative is often called into question. Numerous linguistic, literary, neuroscientific, and evolutionary studies corroborate this idea. In reality, narrativity in these different fields of study often means different objects of inquiry, which have different definitions and describe different processes and, therefore, different cognitive capacities. In this paper, we will consider the notion of narrativity as a cognitive process, that is, as a component of the human mode of knowledge construction. As such, narrativity would constitute a cognitive universal. From this definition, we will show how narrativity is an eminently linguistic process made possible by the body technology of language and voice in particular. Finally, we will argue for the constitutive and bodily role of language for narrativity in ontogenetic development and inner speech.

Description: Churata is an author who, from a place of enunciation removed from the shaping processes of Western modernity such as the Andean plateau, opens and will continue to open new interpretive paths from unprecedented perspectives. "He dialogues with the various turns taken by criticism and cultural theory in recent decades," as Elizabeth Monasterios shows in the introduction, and new generations of critics of Latin American literature and culture are being formed through the study of his work. The book, which collects the papers of the International Conference "Gamaliel Churata: envisioning the circulation of andean epistemologies in the age of globalization," held at the University of Pittsburgh in 2016, marks a moment of transition in studies on the author from which emerges as a challenge: "The urgency of publishing the unpublished manuscripts and reflecting on the theoretical and conceptual potential of his work to contribute, from an andean epistemology, to the current debate, on humanism and the construction of new ontological consciousnesses".

Description: In the field of Sardinian literature, the volume collects the best of Giovanni Pirodda's articles and shows his rare ability to combine a synthetic overview - capable of bold diachronic weavings from which crucial literary facts emerge, in the constant tension between canon and deviation from it - with the author's portrait and the precise analysis of his texts. Pirodda's reflections have unquestionably qualified the critical vicissitudes of the leading figures in contemporary Sardinian literature, such as Grazia Deledda, Antioco Casula, Giuseppe Dessì and Salvatore Satta.

Description: This contribution proposes some general observations on gendered language in a public context. Some specific issues are discussed: 1) language can be neither the only nor the main tool for a truly inclusive society, for which it is rather necessary to raise the level of average culture; 2) the public language has to refer to standard Italian in order to guarantee transparency for all citizens (even of those who do not have a high level of linguistic competence and therefore cannot handle exogenous changes in structure) 3) the unmarked masculine in certain contexts is however an inclusive strategy that in Italian is embedded in an articulated system of solutions that are not always based on the grammatical masculine (such as the use of feminine persona).

The result is the discovery of a little-known intellectual and of a woman who was, on the contrary, very well-known and present in the social chronicles of her time: Marie Louise La Farge. A wealthy American of French origins, divorced and married four times, she lived in London, Paris, Rome and died in Florence in 1899. After her will gave rise to a legal battle that reignited public interest on her life, she fell into oblivion. Her story resurfaced from some ownership notes found on several books of Merino’s library, books owned by Louise’s ex-husbands. The library was given to the University of Florence by the La Farge’s heirs.

The area in which an initial answer is sought is the world of entertainment, starting in particular with the Sanremo Festival 2022, co-hosted by actor Gianluca Gori as Drusilla Foer, in multiple chronicles celebrated as the most representative female face of this edition of the Festival. From an initial search of news images, we have shown how almost exclusively men are placed in the center and rewarded over women who use, express, manifest, and publicize aspects of themselves, in reference to gender, that are culturally ascribable to the other sex: a true gender inequality.

Description: The paper examines some critical aspects of the manuscript tradition of Boccaccio’s Corbaccio, starting from the results of the very few studies on the subject. Besides proposing an updated list of all the 79 available manuscripts that hand down the work, whose yet we don’t have any critical edition, he then demonstrates, through a number of examples, the benefits of widening perspective to the codes of the non-α family, but also of a comprehensive reconsideration of the status of α itself. In the absence of a solid classification of the whole manuscript tradition, the “traditional” hypothesis that the α2 group (and in particular the Mannelli codex) represents an advanced redaction of Boccaccio’s «umile trattato» risks to be too conditioning if assumed at such a preliminary stage.

In this essay, Sedakova’s poetic and translating career is analysed by showing how, from her first publications in the samizdat journals of the 1970s to her most recent publications in 2020, the figure of Dante, his work and themes have always been given central importance.

In addition to exchanges on specific authors or events (Noventa, Leopardi, Contini, Papini and the avant-garde, Bontempelli, Aldo Braibanti’s trial, etc.), the comparison and in some cases the clash between the two interlocutors pivots on the role of literary criticism in years of a profound cultural crisis and transformation in Italy. Both still place a high value on the figure of the intellectual and of the literary critic, as long as his role is exercised in full awareness of the contradictions that characterize it.

Description: This article aims to show how Dante Alighieri was ‘used’ in Renaissance Polish literature. Dante was known by Polish intellectuals first of all as a political theorist. Only in the second half of the 14th century did Polish writers start to refer to him as a great poet (Długosz). However, Dante was rather known than read and ‘used’ as a topic character to demonstrate the excellence of vernacular poetry. Andrzej Trzecieski the Younger, in fact, wrote in a couple of epigrams to his friend Mikołaj Rej, that Rej is to Polish literature, what Dante (and Petrarch) was to Italian literature; in addition to this, Trzecieski underlines, through intertextual allusions, that Dante (and Rej) had the same dignity of ancient Greek and Latin poets. This attitude that vernacular literature is on par with Greek and ancient literature is found also in the elegy III 8 by Jan Kochanowski, where Ronsard is presented as a “classic” poet. The final part of this work compares the situation in 15th and 16th-century Italian and Polish literature in terms of the relationship between ancient and vernacular poetry.

Description: In the present article, the author briefly retraces the stages of Dante’s reception in Ukraine, then analyzes the main Ukrainian translations of Dante’s Divine Comedy in the 20th-21st century, namely those by Petro Karmans’kyj, Jevhen Drob’jazko and Maksym Stricha. The author briefly dwells on Karmans’kyj’s translation, highlighting the flaws already noted by H. Kočur and M. Stricha. Then the author analyzes Drob’jazko’s and Stricha’s translations, the only two complete Ukrainian translations of the Divine Comedy published so far. The author particularly compares the translators’ approaches to potential difficulties (e.g., the rendering of verse lines or single words in Latin, the verse lines in Provencal in Purgatory, song XXVI, ll. 141-147; the translations of some characters’ names, especially speaking names), and highlights the merits of their long and accurate work, which finally allowed Ukrainian readers to truly experience the Italian national poet, on one side, and filled the gap that divided Ukrainian literature from the neighboring Polish and Russian literature, on the other.

Description: The history of reflection on language is characterized by a singular ambiguity. For centuries, it has been carried on as if the existence of language and the cognitive-narrative capacities which derive from it were independently considered from the function that, on the other hand, founds and characterizes it, namely listening. We believe that the reason for this strangeness lies in the fact that there is no possible discourse on listening that does not lead to a discourse on the body, especially focusing on the body discourse of one's mother and her voice. On the contrary, this contribution aims to show that, in order to understand our history as talking and storytelling animals, it is important to reconstruct the specific journey that - in the course of both our phylogenesis and ontogenesis - the ear makes. It is, in fact, an organ already active in utero and on which, during our evolution, depends on both the emergence of the articulate voice and the bipedalism as well, as the posture par excellence of narration.

Description: What is the role of interpretation—the close reading of individual texts—in cognitive literary studies? In attempting to come to grips with this vexed question, my article focuses on the complex divides that separate the practice of interpretation from cognitive-scientific research. I argue that cognitive literary studies can only fulfill their potential by moving beyond interpretation, and I survey lines of research that have already put into practice this intuition. Secondly, I explore a heuristic use of interpretation, where insights from cognitive science are leveraged—in what I call a “cognitive thematics”—to illuminate a background of metacognitive questions.

Description: There is no real difference between the records of the biggest rural Lords and those of the Principalities in late medieval Italy. Both ones had a more or less organised chancery and produced documents in chancery form. Their archival history too is similar. The paper proposes and discusses the documentary typology of the documents made by and for the Lords. The Empire, the Holy See, the Kingdoms may have influenced the form of seigneurial litterae patentes and clausae, although there were individual nuances. The other documents, as registers and other chancery books were influenced by different regional traditions.

Description: The volume here presented aims to commemorate the Portuguese poet António Correia a year after his death with the translation, for the first time in Italian language, of two collections of sonnets: Deideia and Amagao meu amor, both edited in Macao in 1992. The translation, together with some notes and the essay included in the volume are accompained by personal memories of two Portuguese dear friends of Correia. The volume thus structured aims to introduce the traveling and Eastern Lusitanian soul of António Correia who lived in Macao for almost twenty years. At the same time, the volume aims to present for the first time, through other bio-bibliographical details, the man and the poet António Correia, even now not well known in the Italian and Portuguese academia.

Description: Narrative has been a subject of theoretical reflection and empirical investigation since Aristotle's Poetics. The past century has seen a growing interest in it, from an increasingly interdisciplinary perspective, leading to a truly "narrative turn" in the humanities and social sciences. The purpose of this volume is to provide an overview of this vast scholarly production, focusing in particular on: theories of narrative at the intersection of cognitive, evolutionary and computational approaches; narrative and cognitive neuroscience; and narrative and storytelling as socio-communicative phenomena.

Description: Stories are now a distinctive and established genre in social media. From Snapchat to WhatsApp, via Facebook and Instagram, more than half a billion authors (amateurs, but not only) interact with apps by composing and consuming stories that configure new literature in which alphabetic writing coexists with the growing dominance of visual language. Centered on the narrativization of the lives of the users, invited to tell and retell themselves seamlessly, the hardware architecture and software interfaces of digital devices and media seem to generate a form of addiction to narratives, a need induced in both writing and reading. In the face of such an overdose, the question remains whether those of social media are still "stories that heal" or, rather, stories that poison.

Description: Rather, the "scraps" collected in this volume are "fragments" understood in the Petrarchan sense, as flakes of an organic whole, as moments that give a sense of what time is. Petrarch is an accessible author because he is flat and elegant, but he is actually scholarly without being ostentatious about it, so it is surprising every time one discovers a web of literary allusions behind dimly presented data. Each "remnant" bears witness to these occasional discoveries, to readings that seek not allegorical "supersense" but the scholarly undercurrent of this writing. An early section points to the "solitary life" as the matrix of this familiarity and intimacy with ancient texts. Another and more extensive section identifies specific "sources" on points where one would not suspect their presence. Another group concerns Petrarch's fortunes, that is, the different readings of his work given in different environments and eras. Finally, an essay on the "private" world of the author, who fights against superstitions but does not feel completely freed from them. Thus not an "organic" book in the traditional sense, and yet a unified work in that it is devoted to the reconstruction of a style of work and the various ways of enjoying it.

And, again, the expression “Estro furioso” could now be used: as a ‘sample’ of style - or as a possible outline of shared reading - in the five chapters (Domenico Rea as contemporary writer; Domenico Rea, poet and novelist; Domenico Rea between national and regional publishing; Domenico Rea among History, Anthropology, Journalism and Photography; Domenico Rea between the Old and the New Continent: the language, the literature) thematic containers of fifteen essays of this volume dedicated to Domenico Rea. The authors of the essays are scholars from various Italian and foreign universities, journalists, experts in the world of photography and publishing.

On the one hand the analysis accounts for the historical, social and literary context of post-war Italy, in which the books were published. On the other, a textual and translating analysis of a selection of volumes is conducted within the theoretical framework of Translation Studies and Adaptation Studies. The book aims at: filling a gap in Slavic studies, which so far have dealt discontinuously with children’s literature; including Russian children’s literature in the history of Italian publishing; providing some preliminary observations regarding the image of Russian children’s literature created in Italy from the post-war period to the collapse of the USSR.

It focuses on the complex state of Serbian Danteology in the crucial historical period in which Yugoslavia was beginning to crumble and Serbia was subjected to sanctions and isolated from the world, and which also includes the NATO bombings. The examination concludes in 2021, which coincides with the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death. The paper focuses primarily on translations of Dante’s works (mostly the Divine Comedy) by two Serbian translators, Dragan Mraović and later Kolja Mićević, but also on republished translations such as those by Dragiša Stanojević and Mihovil Kombol. The Serbian studies and theatrical performances of Dante’s work are also considered.

The milestones of this new era were a new complete translation of the Comedy and the first complete translation of the De vulgari eloquentia, accompanied by other occasional initiatives, the production or translation of texts for the study of Dante and partial translations of Dante’s works. The weak point of reception remains the absence of Dante in school curricula.

Description: In Luigi Meneghello’s work, literary representations of the mineral world play a deconstructive role, in that they authorize unprecedented and transversal readings aimed at unlocking the writer’s material and scientific imagery. Meneghello quite literally seems to have ‘stratified’ his creative work through using this imagery, from the lithogenesis of writing to the semantics of the crystal, petrifying reveries, and the effusive magma of language. The líthos is used as a ‘probe’, a hermeneutic sounding device through which to investigate cultural systems, the sedimentation of collective memory, and the role of writing itself, and it functions as a privileged access key to the author’s poetics.

Description: It truly would be a mistake to associate Domenico Rea with the critical cliché of the "rediscovered writer." Important bibliographic "clues" (works by and about Rea, have been consistently published in recent decades), which would inevitably direct us towards the mammoth 'proof' of the Meridiano, edited by the late Francesco Durante in 2005. Specific names need not be mentioned here, as they are mostly indicated and discussed in the essays in this volume. Instead, it is important to highlight the corollary derived from this preliminary evidence. If this is the case, if Rea's writing has continued to be read and discussed in different forms and ways over the years, then the question is not so much one of, so as to say - give Rea what is Rea's. Rather, the problem becomes one of verifying the methods, timing, and critical formulas of this continuity. In other words, a reflection on the production of the Neapolitan writer - and setting the ambitious goal of being 'wide-ranging' - must bring to light unfounded spaces, unpublished and rare materials so as to reconstruct friendships and intellectual relationships, to reason as to the longevity of his work and its internal relationships. In recent years, the activities of the 'National Committee for the celebrations of the centenary of his birth', established by Ministerial Decree 220, 17 June 2021, and chaired by Pasquale Sabbatino, have focused on these objectives. Starting from the opening conference "Domenico Rea and Italian Twentieth Century" (Naples, November 9-11, 2021), the proceedings of which are published here, an attempt has been made to transform this centenary into a broader "critical occasion".
    Description: Published

Description: The essay aims to develop a questionnaire for the study of the accounting records of late medieval rural lordships, combining the problems and methods of medievalist historiography and diplomatics. Firstly, the textual types and functions of accounting records are analysed, dividing them into income lists and officers’ accounts and observing their evolution in the light of the general transformations of documentary writing during the late Middle Ages. A detailed analysis of the parallels between seigniorial accounts and the accounts of the central powers is then carried out, with particular attention to north-western Italy.

Description: Distant reading, an empirical and quantitative approach in literary studies proposed by Franco Moretti, has raised a lively debate and attracted criticisms from "traditional literary scholars." An important reason behind these criticisms is the need for solid theoretical foundations: distant reading is perhaps the first methodology in literary studies that do not include a specific theory of literature, an ontology of the literary. Much of the work in the field derives its theoretical frameworks from the literary theories of the twentieth-century tradition, based on the assumption that literary texts can be understood through reading and interpretation. A large-scale quantitative approach to literary and cultural phenomena is mainly incompatible with "the hermeneutic attitude" and traditional theories. Therefore, I propose a convergence with cognitive and bio-evolutionary approaches to literature and studies of cultural evolution and a shift from "interpretation" to "explanation" as the goal of computational literary studies.

Starting from 1921, and the important essays published in the journal “L’Europa orientale”, the author shows how interest in the reception of Dante in the Slavic world has never decreased among Italian Slavists, as well as specialists on Italian literature in the Slavic countries. This volume is one of many illustrating this rich history. In the second part of the essay, the author discusses the different contributions gathered in this volume, highlighting the connections among different areas of the Slavic world within the field of the reception of Dante’s oeuvre.

This article analyzes Ser Giovanni’s Pecorone with the aim of individuating stylistic, rhetorical, and rhythmic elements and of understanding their relationship with its model, Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron. Description: What is fiction about, and what is it good for? An influential family of theories sees fiction as rooted in adaptive simulation mechanisms. In this view, our propensity to create and enjoy narrative fictions was selected and maintained due to the training that we get from mentally simulating situations relevant to our survival and reproduction. We put forward and test a precise version of this claim, the “ordeal simulation hypothesis”. It states that fictional narrative primarily simulates “ordeals”: situations where a person’s reaction might dramatically improve or decrease her fitness, such as deadly aggressions, or decisions on long-term matrimonial commitments. We study mortality in fictional and non-fictional texts as a partial test for this view. Based on an analysis of 744 extensive summaries of twentieth century American novels of various genres, we show that the odds of dying (in a given year) are vastly exaggerated in fiction compared to reality, but specifically more exaggerated for homicides as compared to suicides, accidents, war-related, or natural deaths. This evidence supports the ordeal simulation hypothesis but is also compatible with other accounts.

Description: It was 1987 when Alma Sabatini, following the request of the National Commission for Equality and equal Opportunities between women and men, established by the Presidency of the Council of Ministries, published The indications for a non-sexist use of the Italian language. Over thirty years after that publication, the topic has kept its relevance intact, becoming the keystone for reading and interpreting gender issues and policies. Starting from this context, the universities of Florence and Udine proposed a reflection on the relationship between gender and language, bringing the topic back to the center of the scientific debate, but free from media aspects which it often appears to be imbued with in public opinion and that, sometimes, end up undermining the true value of the relationship.

Description: Siddhartha, the novel by Hermann Hesse from 1922, has gained worldwide popularity. Set in India during the 5th century BC, this story of a boy who questions his father's house and the tradition in which he was raised, and who seeks his own path amidst complete upheavals of self-conception and the world, finds its relevance in the models of subjectivity it presents for a reading between empathy and distance. The construction of new identities based on interiority aims to strengthen individuals who face the loss of identity in modern industrialized societies driven by economic rationality, where they experience alienation and isolation even in digital social interactions. Siddhartha's sincere and profound search for self leads him to experience different aspects of subjectivity, which, in addition to the characters and events narrated, instil confidence in oneself and the ability to face the future through its aesthetic structure. The analysis and interpretation of the text, through a process of close reading, is designed to introduce readers to this dimension of the text, catering not only to beginners studying German literature.

Description: The text of the commentary to the Georgics of Benvenuto da Imola allows to illuminate the intertextual relationships between Benvenuto da Imola and Giovanni Boccaccio. Through a series of examples that highlight clear dependence on the Genealogia Deorum Gentilium, the De montibus and the Zibaldone membranaceo, the aim is to show Benvenuto's intellectual and cultural debt to the preceptor Boccaccio, thus configuring the Imolese as a personally known disciple and one of the first readers of Boccaccio's Latin erudite works.

Description: The essay proposes a study of the relationship between Tasso and Boccaccio, analysing the references to the ancient auctoritas present in Tasso's theoretical production. The sixteenth-century poet's interest in Boccaccio's works can be found in the author's epistolary, in the letters in which Tasso claims to be in possession of some of his texts or in those in which he explicitly requests them. As with Dante and Petrarch, the reading is careful and inclined to take the ancient source as a model for observations of a rhetorical, linguistic-grammatical and metrical nature. These observations form a non-systematic corpus of reflections on poetic language, an authentic reflection of an intimate dialogue between the author and Boccaccio.

Description: The present paper is dedicated to 16th-century Croatian author Petar Zoranić’s (Zadar / Zara, 1508 – 1569?) direct and mediated echoing of Dante’s oeuvre. Zoranić’s pastoral novel Planine (Mountains) belongs to the consistent tradition of reuse, quotation and translation that the Italian poet’s legacy has enjoyed in Croatia from the 14th century to the present day. Building on the work of the humanist writer Marko Marulić (Marcus Marulus Spalatensis, Split / Spalato, 1450-1524), who aspired to do for the Croatian vernacular what Dante did for the Italian volgare, Zoranić adapted Dante’s example to his own purposes not only in the promotion of the Croatian language and literature, but also in the celebration of the beauty, history and cultural heritage of his homeland. A true connoisseur of Dante’s original, the author from Zadar was also competent in the art of appropriation and creative reemployment of the Commedia’s various aspects, an exercise inaugurated by Boccaccio, and practiced by 15th and 16th-century men and women of letters. My contribution will focus on the modalities through which the text of Planine transforms the materials derived from Dante by mixing them with elements from other prestigious literary sources, in their turn heirs or precursors of Dante, such as works by Virgil, Ovid, the Church doctors, the Roman de la rose, Petrarch’s Trionfi, the Decameron and the early narrative production by Boccaccio, Arcadia by Sannazaro and, according to my hypothesis, the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (Polifilo’s Dream) by Francesco Colonna.

Description: For Belarusian literature, the perception of Dante’s work assumes a concrete form only at the beginning of the 20th century and is linked, above all, to the names of Janka Kupala and Maksim Bahdanovič. The literary group “Uzvyšša”, established in Belarus in 1926, and the work of Jasep Pušča ushered in the second wave of interest in Dante. After the war we find Dante’s reception in the work of Uladzimir Karatkevič, Maksim Tank and others. Finally, in 1997 comes the first translation into Belarusian of the Divine Comedy by Uladzimir Skarynkin, who also translated Vita Nova in 2011. The translation from Latin of Dante’s treatise De vulgari eloquentia was completed by the author of this article and published in 2004.

Description: By focusing on the relationship between reading and autobiographical memory, this study aims to bring out the importance of oral sources for restoring and deepening themes of absolute pedagogical relevance linked to family education, children’s literature, schooling, censorship and the condition of women. Through illustrating some online archives in the Anglo-Saxon area and the madeleineinbiblioteca.it project, the aim is to bring out a field of investigation for historical-educational research, still largely unexplored. This can be seen as the first step in a path that is going to be enriched and further developed in order to demonstrate how oral history can be used to reflect on reading, its multiple formative values and the various contexts in which it is practised.

Description: From the middle of the 16th century, the practice of duelling, by then closely linked to the principle of honour and the defence of its integrity, became the subject of a large number of treatises addressed to a large audience of gentlemen, eager to know the most honourable ways to come to terms with the disputes that often involved them. Treatises on the duel, whose diffusion was favoured by the use of the vernacular and the intense publishing activity of the time, gave rise to a discipline, the science of chivalry, which played a decisive role in the diffusion of the myth of chivalry and in the definition of a common noble ethos. Through an indepth study, in Onorati gentiluomini e duellanti impavidi Giovanni Fiazza highlights the foundations of a way of understanding the division between the classes and social relations that would come to an end only two centuries later, with the end of the Old Regime.
    Description: Published

Description: Vulcano, Sicily 1964. After a meeting with him in Cortona, Helle Busacca, a poet and writer from Messina, began drafting an epistolary diary dedicated to Corrado Pavolini, a well-known intellectual and film director of Tuscan origins with whom she had been in love for over twenty years. Through the so far unpublished pages she dedicated to “una storia senza storia” (“a story without history"), the writer brings to life an incandescent theatre of the self, in which the dramatization of personal experience, the self-representative elaboration and the expression of a living and restless inner self combine in a mixture of strongly hybrid characters, which is conveyed by a disruptive communicative force. As the desperately pursued interlocutor becomes increasingly evanescent and unreachable, the voice of a modern tragic heroine emerges unmistakably between claim and confession.

Description: This book, the result of a lengthy labour of cataloguing and research, continues the indexing and recording of the unpublished epistolary material conserved in the Dessí fond, launched in 2003 by Chiara Andrei with the edition of the family correspondence (Firenze, FUP). Now, through 1,900 letters from friends and readers, Francesca Nencioni offers a different and more ample overview of the fundamental stages in the life and works of the writer, focusing above all on the years of his university training in Pisa. Of particular interest is the appendix of carefully annotated unpublished texts, which offers 19 letters from Dessí to friends and scholars, the complete two-way correspondence with Walter Binni, and the letters sent to the friend and disciple of the great historian, Delio Cantimori. Description: On 12, 13 and 14 May 2003 the second edition of the study days on didactic materials for the teaching of foreign languages was held in Florence. Numerous language teachers, mainly active in Italian universities but also in private and public high schools took part in these study days. The speakers addressed a wide range of issues ranging from the implications of the enlargement of the European Union to the educational use of new technologies, from aspects of contrastive linguistics to the use of foreign languages for the teaching of non-linguistic subjects. From this dialogue between different experiences and cultures, an extremely dynamic picture emerged, open to new methodological and scientific stimuli. The volume is the significant collection of over 40 interventions and represents a contribution to the discussion on the teaching of foreign languages.

Description: War is an event, theme, topos that induces fiction more than any other – stimulating, one might say, superego-like instances of historical fidelity – to press on its own boundaries, inhibit the space of the invention and merge with non-fictional forms of writing (memorial, diary, reportage ...). But in what way and to what extent its literary (as well as theatrical, cinematographical, comic book...) representation has changed – in terms of tone and strategies, in the degree of deformation of the known and shared reality – in the space of a Century that has seen the transformation of war strategies, media coverage and consequently the collective imagination linked to conflicts? The volume, conceived and edited by Nicola Turi, while tracing the individual path of known and lesser-known authors, in relation to the main theme of the book, both Italian and not (from Leopardi to Zanzotto, from Gadda to Calvino, from Salsa to Dessí, from Luzi and Fenoglio to Leavitt, Eisner and Celestini), also stimulates and elaborates a profound reflection on the bewilderment and natural attraction of the artistic gesture (from time to time in the name of fierce irony, desperate incredulity, the elegiac testimony) for evil, pain, the martial distortion of the human, social and political context.

Description: Recent years have seen the publication of a great deal of the work of Ruggero Jacobbi, a legendary figure of Italian twentieth-century culture, thanks to a praiseworthy retrieval of unpublished material conserved in the «A. Bonsanti» contemporary archive of the Gabinetto «G.P. Vieusseux». However, despite so many new pages of poetry and translation, what was still lacking was the writer's voice. The voice which, thanks to the painstaking work of Eleonora Pancani, we can now read (if not hear), as with characteristic dexterity it intermingles verses and music, literature and theatre, politics and entertainment. Ruggero Jacobbi alla radio presents the transcription of several radio programmes of the 70s featuring the genial culture of this multi-faceted intellectual. Jacobbi entertains his audience, discorsing on literary history, the figurative arts and opera, quoting poetry, discussing plays, mingling observations on Goldoni, Pirandello, Bontempelli, Savinio, Pessoa and García Lorca in an engaging anecdotal style that involves the cinema, the theatre and literature, while the great figures of tradition and recent history are interwoven with reminiscences of private life.

Description: Granito e arcobaleno. Forme e modi della scrittura auto/biografica collects essays on issues regarding relationships and their fragile balances, between reality and fiction, experience and memory, private and public, autonomy and relatedness, referential truth and subjective truth, between the self and the other. The contributions also involve concepts such as the social, cultural, geopolitical or even rhetorical space, where the auto/biographical subject is situated; the 'materiality' of the body, which perceives and internalizes the images, sensations and experiences of the external world; the agency and the linguistic, discursive, social and cultural constraints to which it is subjected. After a theoretical introduction, this volume explores individual case studies that can be traced back to different and sometimes distant cultural realities, then concludes with an artist's reflection on art and life.

Description: The Spanish civil war is considered a key point of analysis of the first half of the 1900s because of the peculiar context in which it developed, the ideologies that provoked it and for the controversies that still accompany it. An event of this magnitude has had and continues to have a great resonance in literature; this essay compares two authors at the antipodes, which well summarize the socio-political debate that accompanies the theme: José María Gironella, author close to the regime, and Juan Benet, hermetic writer. The contrast between the motivations and objectives of the two writers is accompanied by incompatible narrative choices. With memory as both a judge and a defendant, the authors open two different paths of communication with the reader: from history to man, from man to history.

Description: The volume presents a selection of poems originally composed in German by Austrian-Italian author Benno Geiger and translated into Italian for the first time. This publication aims to make Geiger’s poetical work available to a broader audience and place it aside his better known writing on Art History. Geiger’s specific role as a mediator and bridge between two cultures makes his poetical work extremely significant, as well as considering his prolific activity as a literary translator to which he devoted himself throughout his life. The current edition provides bilingual parallel text, preceded by an introductory essay and a biographical profile of the author. The critical apparatus highlights both the intertextual references and the writer’s complex links with the Italian and German poetical traditions.

The contributions are centred on the idea of canon, as a cultural construct founding modern national identities. Another trace is the literary and cultural hybridisations between different geographies. For the Romanian context, the contributions pay particular attention to the movements of the avant-garde of the early 1900s. Some contributions account for the most problematic aspects of the contemporary world using interdisciplinary approaches.

Description: Despite the indisputable richness of the Montalian bibliography, there still was no comment on a fundamental collection such as La bufera e altro, published, after a complex and protracted gestation, by Neri Pozza in 1956. The aim of this book is to fill that void, giving a first contribution to the exegesis of one of Montale's densest - and most difficult - works, where the poet draws the conclusions of a long research to restart his own inexhaustible search for new languages and imagery. Between preliminary introductions (proper essays) and notes, she tries to take stock of the matter by comparing the various existing critical hypotheses and proposing - in a close hand-to-hand with the text, verse by verse, problematising rather than glossing over - an original interpretative line.

Description: The global nature of Cervantes Global´s work is evident in the worldwide distribution of its readers, in the variety of methodologies from which it is studied and in the depth of the texts, which are attractive in any cultural context. Cervantes Global illustrates the heterogeneous and dialectical nature of Cervantism with contributions from various countries: Germany, Argentina, Canada, South Korea, Spain, United States, France, Israel, Italy and Switzerland. The volume brings together different but complementary approaches and methodologies that allow establishing a dialogue between different notions and critical categories, as well as promoting a self-reflective and self-critical attitude within Cervantism. The volume contains works on the reception of Don Quixote, but also studies on its female figures, on the equestrian theme, on the canon of Cervantine kings, or on the ideal of the Christian knight. Likewise, it presents studies on other Cervantine works (Exemplary Novels, Persiles), providing a global vision of it.

Description: By analysing three Italian crime novels – Piero Soria’s Cuore di lupo (1999), Massimo Siviero’s Il terno di San Gennaro (1999) and Marcello Fois’s Dura madre (2001), – this essay investigates how Italian crime fiction set in present times reflects on the Risorgimento and its legacy. It argues that by referring to a crucial period of Italian history, the crime stories analysed in this chapter address an unsolved relationship between the North and the South of Italy brought to light in the 1990s by the success of controversial political parties such as the Lega Nord. In particular, I show how with Dura madre, Fois indicates a way of uniting Italy through a mutual understanding that preserves regional identities and cultures.

Description: The concept of the literary canon is one of the most debated and controversial in the western intellectual tradition. This book offers ten contributions by Italian scholars of Anglo-American culture addressing the way in which the concept of the literary canon holds out against areas traditionally considered as external or extraneous to it. The essays range over different topics: the etymological analysis of the term "canon"; the relations between canon and performativity; paraliterature – a universe populated by non-hierarchic genres; the relations between post-colonial literature and the canon; postmodern biofiction; studies on translation and finally gay and lesbian literature. The book ends with a meditation on the innovations wrought on the Anglo-American canon by the virtual world of Internet and with a reading proposal originating from a different area of literary studies. Taken as a whole, the intention of the book is to pave the way to democratisation and pluralism in literary studies, going beyond the limitations set by the traditional scale of values of the "western canon". It proposes a frequentation of the geographical and cultural borderlines and hence of the areas of resistance that such borderlines pose to the dominant conceptual hierarchies within and around us, enabling us to glimpse an original future for literature and for western culture in a broader sense.

Description: Twenty years ago a unique figure in the history of our country returned dramatically to the world of the "drowned", one of the spectral "saved" who had found the strength to testify the dramas of the twentieth century: Primo Levi. On the twentieth anniversary of his death, Firenze University Press has decided to revive his lesson with a tribute that is not intended as a celebration, but rather as a pause for refection in which we can listen again to the words of this great writer, dissected and scrutinised the world over, generating germs of memory hopefully as universal as the mathematical and geometrical signs and the chemical formulas he so loved. Voci dal mondo per Primo Levi. In memoria, per la memoria edited by Luigi Dei, a lecturer in physical chemistry at the University of Florence, consists of fifteen short essays contributed by a polyhedric group of writers from various parts of the world and of different educational and professional backgrounds.
