    Beschreibung: Aluminum plates of various length/width ratios loaded in compression are examined analytically in terms of buckling and postbuckling for comparison with classical theory. The plates are considered to be subjected to longitudinal compressive displacement with no edge stress and are assumed to be simply supported at the side edges. The average longitudinal direct stresses are computed to plot characteristic curves by means of the following theories: 3D flexibility, higher-order shear deformation, first-order shear deformation, and classical von Karman. The 3D flexibility approach yields the lowest results with more unknowns than the higher-order shear-deformation method. The 3D flexibility approach is considered to be the most accurate, and it is shown that the calculated resultants and displacements tend to vary when consideration is given to the effects of transverse shear.

    Beschreibung: Present interest in hypersonic vehicles has resulted in a renewed interest in thermal stress analysis of airframe structures. While there are numerous texts and papers on thermal stress analysis, practical examples and experience on light gage aircraft structures are fairly limited. A research program has been undertaken at General Dynamics to demonstrate the present state of the art, verify methods of analysis, gain experience in their use, and develop engineering judgement in thermal stress analysis. The approach for this project has been to conduct a series of analyses of this sample problem and compare analysis results with test data. This comparison will give an idea of how to use our present methods of thermal stress analysis, and how accurate we can expect them to be.

    Beschreibung: Effective methods of approximate eigensolution reanalysis of modified nonclassically damped structures are developed. For structures with passive or active discrete damping devices or with damping treatment, the system becomes nonproportionally damped and the computation of its dynamic responses may require the use of complex modes. For larger systems, the computation of complex modes is very expensive. Thus it is desirable to have approximate reanalysis techniques for the efficient evaluation of the effect of design changes. In recent years, the assumed mode reanalysis method was successfully applied to minimum weight design of undamped structures with natural frequency constraints. The accuracy of the assumed mode reanalysis method can be improved dramatically if the global approximation function includes the normal modes of the original system and their derivatives. This approach was demonstrated to be effective even for a system with shape changes. The approach used by Noor et al. for eigensolution reanalysis of undamped structures is extended to treat a nonclassically damped system.

    Beschreibung: The real benefit of structural optimization techniques is in the application of these techniques to large structures such as full vehicles or full aircraft. For these structures, however, the sequential computer's time and memory requirements prohibit the solutions. With the rapid development of parallel computers, parallel processing of large scale structural optimization problems is achievable. In this paper we discuss the parallel processing of structural optimization problems with parallel structural analysis. Two different types of interface between the optimization and analysis routines are developed and tested.

    Beschreibung: In most structural optimization problems the implicit behavior constraints are evaluated for successive modifications in the design. For each trial design, the analysis equations must be solved and the multiple repeated analyses usually involve extensive computational effort. This difficulty motivated several studies on explicit approximations of the structural behavior in terms of the design variables. The latter approach can considerably reduce the amount of computations, but the quality of the approximations might not be sufficient. Many of the approximate behavior models proposed in the past are valid only for relatively small changes in the design variables. The accuracy of the results is often insufficient for large changes in the design. The object of this study is to present efficient and high quality approximations of the structural behavior. It will be shown that the quality of the approximations can greatly be improved by combining scaling of the initial design, using intervening variables, and scaling a set of fictitious loads. Integrating these means, a powerful solution procedure can be introduced. In addition, the errors in satisfying the analysis equations can readily be evaluated. A numerical example illustrates the solution methodology and the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

    Beschreibung: Ill-conditioned systems arising in analysis and optimization can display a high sensitivity to numerical precision for changes and errors in data input. Such data may be in the form of system parameter input or desired system response. The ill-conditioning referred to generally arises from the lack of sufficient independent data to define a complex system or the weak sensitivity of response to source input parameters. It is shown how small errors in data and assumed fixed and known parameters can lead to highly erroneous results in ill-conditioned linear algebraic equations. A simplified detection and correction of critical input data arising in the coefficient matrix and desired response (i.e., right hand side) is proposed.

    Beschreibung: An identification procedure proposed by Shen and Taylor to determine the crack characteristics (location and size of the crack) from dynamic measurements is tested. This procedure was based on minimization of either the 'mean-square' measure of difference between measurement data (natural frequencies and mode shapes) and the corresponding predictions obtained from the computational model. The procedure is tested for simulated damage in the form of symmetric cracks in a simply-supported Bernoulli-Euler beam. The sensitivity of the solution of damage identification problems to the values of parameters that characterize damage is discussed. A sensitivity formula is derived.

    Beschreibung: The issue of the utility of multilevel decomposition and optimization remains controversial. To date, only the structural optimization community has actively developed and promoted multilevel optimization techniques. However, even this community acknowledges that multilevel optimization is ideally suited for a rather limited set of problems. It is warned that decomposition typically requires eliminating local variables by using global variables and that this in turn causes ill-conditioning of the multilevel optimization by adding equality constraints. The purpose is to suggest a new multilevel optimization technique. This technique uses behavior variables, in addition to design variables and constraints, to decompose the problem. The new technique removes the need for equality constraints, simplifies the decomposition of the design problem, simplifies the programming task, and improves the convergence speed of multilevel optimization compared to conventional optimization.

    Beschreibung: In recent years there have been several hierarchic multilevel optimization algorithms proposed and implemented in design studies. Equality constraints are often imposed between levels in these multilevel optimizations to maintain system and subsystem variable continuity. Equality constraints of this nature will be referred to as coupling equality constraints. In many implementation studies these coupling equality constraints have been handled indirectly. This indirect handling has been accomplished using the coupling equality constraints' explicit functional relations to eliminate design variables (generally at the subsystem level), with the resulting optimization taking place in a reduced design space. In one multilevel optimization study where the coupling equality constraints were handled directly, the researchers encountered numerical difficulties which prevented their multilevel optimization from reaching the same minimum found in conventional single level solutions. The researchers did not explain the exact nature of the numerical difficulties other than to associate them with the direct handling of the coupling equality constraints. The coupling equality constraints are handled directly, by employing the Generalized Reduced Gradient (GRG) method as the optimizer within a multilevel linear decomposition scheme based on the Sobieski hierarchic algorithm. Two engineering design examples are solved using this approach. The results show that the direct handling of coupling equality constraints in a multilevel optimization does not introduce any problems when the GRG method is employed as the internal optimizer. The optimums achieved are comparable to those achieved in single level solutions and in multilevel studies where the equality constraints have been handled indirectly.

    Beschreibung: Reliability was determined for two degrading dynamic systems subject to random load processes. Damage is caused by loss of components for Daniels systems and crack extension for plates with cracks. The analysis accounted for the coupling between response and current damage state of the system. It is based on mean crossing rates of conditional processes and properties of diffusion models. Simple systems are used to illustrate proposed methods for estimating reliability.

    Beschreibung: A passive vibration damping technique that is referred to as 'Non-Obstructive Particle Damping (NOPD)' is presented. The NOPD technique consists of making small diameter holes (or cavities) at appropriate locations inside vibrating structures and filling these holes to appropriate levels with particles which yield the maximum damping effectiveness for the desired mode (or modes).     Beschreibung: Recent results from sensitivity analysis for strain energy with anisotropic elasticity are applied to thickness and orientational design of laminated membranes. Primarily, the first order gradients of the total elastic energy are used in an optimality criteria based method. This traditional method is shown to give slow convergence with respect to design parameters, although the convergence of strain energy is very good. To get a deeper insight into this rather general characteristic, second order derivatives are included and it is shown how they can be obtained by first order sensitivity analysis. Examples of only thickness design, only orientational design, and combined thickness--orientational design are presented.

    Beschreibung: The objective is to set up and analyze benchmark problems on multibody dynamics and to verify the predictions of two multibody computer simulation codes. TREETOPS and DISCOS have been used to run three example problems - one degree-of-freedom spring mass dashpot system, an inverted pendulum system, and a triple pendulum. To study the dynamics and control interaction, an inverted planar pendulum with an external body force and a torsional control spring was modeled as a hinge connected two-rigid body system. TREETOPS and DISCOS affected the time history simulation of this problem. System state space variables and their time derivatives from two simulation codes were compared.

    Beschreibung: The non-linear dynamic analysis of large structures is always very time, effort and CPU consuming. Whenever possible the reduction of the size of the mathematical model involved is of main importance to speed up the computational procedures. Such reduction can be performed for the part of the structure which perform linearly. Most of the time, the classical Guyan reduction process is used. For non-linear dynamic process where the non-linearity is present at interfaces between different structures, Craig-Bampton models can provide a very rich information, and allow easy selection of the relevant modes with respect to the phenomenon driving the non-linearity. The paper presents the employment of Craig-Bampton models combined with Newmark direct integration for solving non-linear friction problems appearing at the interface between the Hubble Space Telescope and its solar arrays during in-orbit maneuvers. Theory, implementation in the FEM code ASKA, and practical results are shown.

    Beschreibung: Structural optimization problems are mostly solved under constraints from statics, such as stresses, strains, or displacements under static loads. But in the design process, dynamic quantities like eigenfrequencies or accelerations under dynamic loads become more and more important. Therefore, it is obvious that constraints from dynamics must be considered in structural optimization packages. This paper addresses the dynamics branch in MBB-LAGRANGE. It will concentrate on two topics, namely on the different formulations for eigenfrequency constraints and on frequency response constraints. For the latter the necessity of a system reduction is emphasized. The methods implemented in LAGRANGE are presented and examples are given.

    Beschreibung: This paper addresses the weight minimization of a circular plate-like structure which resulted in a 26 percent weight reduction. The optimization was performed numerically with the COPES/ADS program using the modified method of feasible directions. Design parameters were the inner thickness and outer thickness of the plate with constraints on maximum yield stress and maximum transverse displacement. Also, constraints were specified for the upper and lower bounds of the fundamental frequency and plate thicknesses. The MSC/NASTRAN finite element program was used for the evaluation of response variables. Original and final designs of the plate were tested using an Instron tension-compression machine to compare finite element results to measured strain data. The difference between finite element strain components and measured strain data was within engineering accuracy.

    Beschreibung: Any optimization of structures for maximum stability or for maximum dynamic stiffness deals with an eigenvalue problem. The goal of this optimization is to raise the lowest eigenvalue (or eigenvalues) of the problem to its highest (optimal) level at a constant volume of the structure. Likely the lowest eigenvalue may be either inherently multi-modal or it can become multi-modal as a result of the optimization process. The multimodeness introduces some ambiguity to the eigenvalue problem and make the optimization difficult to handle. Thus far, only the simplest cases of multi-modal structures have been effectively optimized using rather elaborate analytical methods. Numerous publications report design of a minimum volume structure with different eigenvalues constraints, in which, however, the modality of the problem is assumed a priori. The method presented here utilizes a multi-modal optimality criteria and allows for inclusion of an arbitrary number of buckling or vibrations modes which might influence the optimization process. The real multi-modality of the problem, that is the number of modes participating in the final optimal design is determined iteratively. Because of a natural use of the FEM technique the method is easy to program and might be helpful in design of large flexible space structures.

    Beschreibung: In this paper an optimal design procedure is introduced to improve the overall performance of nonlinear framed structures. The design methodology presented here is a multiple-objective optimization procedure whose objective functions involve the buckling eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the structure. A constant volume with bounds on the design variables is used in conjunction with an optimality criterion approach. The method provides a general tool for solving complex design problems and generally leads to structures with better limit strength and stability. Many algorithms have been developed to improve the limit strength of structures. In most applications geometrically linear analysis is employed with the consequence that overall strength of the design is overestimated. Directly optimizing the limit load of the structure would require a full nonlinear analysis at each iteration which would be prohibitively expensive. The objective of this paper is to develop an algorithm that can improve the limit-load of geometrically nonlinear framed structures while avoiding the nonlinear analysis. One of the novelties of the new design methodology is its ability to efficiently model and design structures under multiple loading conditions. These loading conditions can be different factored loads or any kind of loads that can be applied to the structure simultaneously or independently. Attention is focused on optimal design of space framed structures. Three-dimensional design problems are more complicated to carry out, but they yield insight into real behavior of the structure and can help avoiding some of the problems that might appear in planar design procedure such as the need for out-of-plane buckling constraint. Although researchers in the field of structural engineering generally agree that optimum design of three-dimension building frames especially in the seismic regions would be beneficial, methods have been slow to emerge. Most of the research in this area has dealt with the optimization of truss and plane frame structures.

    Beschreibung: In the design of complex built-up structures that are made of truss, beam, membrane, shell, and solid, there are five different kinds of design variables: material property, sizing, shape, configuration, and topological variables. Previous research has shown that the improvement in performances obtained by altering the configuration of structural components can be much more significant than those obtained when the geometry is assumed to be fixed. Using the variational approach, a unified design sensitivity was developed for the first three kinds of design variables, and was further extended recently in many structural analysis problems such as nonlinear, structural dynamics, and frequency response analysis. A continuum design sensitivity analysis method is developed for the configuration design variable of built-up structures.

    Beschreibung: This paper presents a simple new algorithm for constructing second-order models for any given flexible structure, with these models satisfying the constraint that each leading principal submatrix of the mass matrix must have a specified condition number. Now, the effects of rounding errors in practical computation generally increase with increasing condition number, i.e. as the matrix considered approaches singularity. Thus, the new models should prove useful for the systematic testing of the numerical properties of many algorithms in the dynamics and control of flexible structures.

    Beschreibung: The stress-ratio algorithm associated with fully stressed design philosophy has been used as a convenient tool to achieve minimum weight design of strength-limited structures. The algorithm is effective and converges quickly for many cases. However, it presents extremely slow oscillatory iteration histories for plate-thickness design problems that involve transverse bending loads. Modification of the basic algorithm presented in this paper provides an effective remedy to this problem when both membrane and bending loads are present. The modified resizing algorithm requires numerical solutions of a fourth-order algebraic equation. No additional data, beyond the ordinary static analysis results, are required.

    Beschreibung: A method for performing a global/local stress analysis is described and its capabilities are demonstrated. The method employs spline interpolation functions which satisfy the linear plate bending equation to determine displacements and rotations from a global model which are used as 'boundary conditions' for the local model. Then, the local model is analyzed independently of the global model of the structure. This approach can be used to determine local, detailed stress states for specific structural regions using independent, refined local models which exploit information from less-refined global models. The method presented is not restricted to having a priori knowledge of the location of the regions requiring local detailed stress analysis. This approach also reduces the computational effort necessary to obtain the detailed stress state. Criteria for applying the method are developed. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated using a classical stress concentration problem and a graphite-epoxy blade-stiffened panel with a discontinuous stiffener.

    Beschreibung: An analytical investigation is conducted to determine the shape of a growing delamination and the distribution of the energy release rate along the delamination front in a laminated composite double cantilever beam specimen. Distributions of the energy release rate for specimens with straight delamination fronts and delamination front contours for delaminations whose growth is governed by the fracture criterion that G = Gc at all points are predicted as a function of material properties and delamination length. The predicted delamination front contours are utilized to ascertain the effect of the changing shape of the delamination front on the value of the critical strain energy release rate as computed from double cantilever beam fracture toughness test data.

    Beschreibung: An adaptive unstructured remeshing technique is applied to transient thermal-structural analysis. The effectiveness of the technique, together with the finite element method and an error estimation technique, is evaluated by two applications which have exact solutions: (1) the steady-state thermal analysis of a plate subjected to a highly localized surface heating, and (2) the transient thermal-structural analysis of a simulated convectively cooled leading edge subjected to a translating heat source. These applications demonstrate that the remeshing technique significantly reduces the problem size as well as the analysis solution error as compared to the results produced using standard structured meshes.

    Beschreibung: Development of probabilistic structural analysis methods for hot structures is a major activity at NASA-Lewis, and consists of five program elements: (1) probabilistic loads, (2) probabilistic finite element analysis, (3) probabilistic material behavior, (4) assessment of reliability and risk, and (5) probabilistic structural performance evaluation. Attention is given to quantification of the effects of uncertainties for several variables on High Pressure Fuel Turbopump blade temperature, pressure, and torque of the Space Shuttle Main Engine; the evaluation of the cumulative distribution function for various structural response variables based on assumed uncertainties in primitive structural variables; evaluation of the failure probability; reliability and risk-cost assessment; and an outline of an emerging approach for eventual hot structures certification. Collectively, the results demonstrate that the structural durability/reliability of hot structural components can be effectively evaluated in a formal probabilistic framework. In addition, the approach can be readily extended to computationally simulate certification of hot structures for aerospace environments.

    Beschreibung: This paper focuses on the design, analysis, and test of a high temperature structural panel, constructed of Ti-6-4, subjected to a variety of thermal and mechanical load conditions. A follow-on panel, constructed of TMC, is also discussed in less detail. The design constraints and test set-up are discussed, as well as the test methods that were used: the grid shadow moire method and a single gage force stiffness method. The agreement between the test data and analysis for this test program provides confidence in the methods that are currently being used to design structures for hypersonic vehicles. The agreement also suggests that postbuckled strength may potentially be used to reduce the vehicle weight.

    Beschreibung: The time-dependent thermo-viscoplastic response of aerospace structures subjected to intense aerothermal loads is predicted using the finite-element method. The finite-element analysis uses the Bodner-Partom unified viscoplastic constitutive relations to determine rate-dependent nonlinear material behavior. The methodology is verified by comparison with experimental data and other numerical results for a uniaxially-loaded bar. The method is then used (1) to predict the structural response of a rectangular plate subjected to line heating along a centerline, and (2) to predict the thermal-structural response of a convectively-cooled engine cowl leading edge subjected to aerodynamic shock-shock interference heating. Compared to linear elastic analysis, the viscoplastic analysis results in lower peak stresses and regions of plastic deformations.

    Beschreibung: The problem addressed is that of obtaining reduced-order component models for use in simulating the dynamics of a multibody system. In certain cases, nonlinear system models may be constructed using linear dynamic models for each component, but allowing large angle motion between components. Without some form of model reduction, system models constructed in this manner may be too large for use in control system design and simulation trades. This paper analyzes one method of component model reduction that allows systems level requirements (e.g., capturing the effect of body 1 reaction wheel noise on body 2 camera pointing) to aid in the selection of the reduced-order component models. Briefly stated, important modes are selected at the system level and projected onto the components, and reduced-order components are then assembled into a reduced-order system model that retains the projected modes.

    Beschreibung: A procedure for the minimum weight design of helicopter rotor blades with constraints on multiple coupled flap-lag natural frequencies, autorotational inertia, and centrifugal stress is presented. Optimum designs are obtained for blades with both rectangular and tapered planforms and are compared within a reference blade. The effects of higher-frequency constraints and stress constraints on the optimum blade designs are assessed. The results indicate that there is an increase in blade weight and a significant change in the design variable distributions with an increase in the number of frequency constraints. The inclusion of stress constraints has different effects on the wall thickness distributions of rectangular and tapered blades, but tends to increase the magnitude of the nonstructural segment weight distributions for both blade types.

    Beschreibung: The simultaneous active control of flexural and extensional vibrations in elastic beams is experimentally investigated. The results demonstrate that using pairs of piezoceramic transducers, whose elements are symmetrically located and independently controlled by a multichannel adaptive controller, enables the high attenuation of both flexural and extensional response. This capability is due to the nature of the piezoceramic element, which when bonded to the surface of the structure and electrically excited, exerts a surface strain on the structure. This strain enables input of both shear forces and moments into the structural system. The results are applicable to many situations where extensional vibrations couple to large flexural vibrations and subsequently radiate significant sound levels.

    Beschreibung: This paper discusses the research in adaptive structures conducted at NASA Langley Research Center. The objective in the research program on adaptive truss structures is to develop an integrated approach for the design, test, and evaluation of adaptive trusses. An adaptive structure must include sensors for measuring some of the states of the mechanism, a controller that processes the sensor information and generates command signals, and a device that will cause the struts in the mechanism to change length. Based on the results of the research program, it is concluded that alternative designs for future space applications are offered, and adaptive truss has been demonstrated to be effective for vibration suppression.

    Beschreibung: The mobility power flow (MPF) approach is used in this paper to describe the flexural behavior of an L-shaped plate structure consisting of thick plates with rotary inertia and shear deformation effects included in the analysis. The introduction of the thick plate effects significantly increases the complexity of the structural mobility functions used in the definitions of the power flow terms; however, because of the substructuring that is used in the MPF approach, the complexity of the problem is significantly reduced as compared to solving for the global structure. Additionally, with the MPF approach the modal behavior is described. The MPF analysis of the L-shaped plate is performed for the case of point force excitation on one plate, with the two plates being identical in both size and thickness. The results of this analysis are compared to results from the finite-element analysis (FEA) and the statistical energy analysis (SEA) and show very good agreement in the low- and high-frequency regimes, respectively.

    Beschreibung: A method is presented for tailoring plate and shell composite structures for optimal forced damped dynamic response. The damping of specific vibration modes is optimized with respect to dynamic performance criteria including placement of natural frequencies and minimization of resonance amplitudes. The structural composite damping is synthesized from the properties of the constituent materials, laminate parameters, and structural geometry based on a specialty finite element. Application studies include the optimization of laminated composite beams and composite shells with fiber volume ratios and ply angles as design variables. The results illustrate the significance of damping tailoring to the dynamic performance of composite structures, and the effectiveness of the method in optimizing the structural dynamic response.

    Beschreibung: Analytical and experimental techniques for the prediction and ground verification of the damped structural dynamics of space structures are developed. The options available for similarity-scaled model testing, including replica and multiple scale approaches, are reviewed. For the case when the distortion of potentially dissipative or nonlinear joints, which would be required in multiple-scale modeling, is impractical, a new type of modeling is introduced, which uses a hybrid of joints at replica scale and connecting elements at a modified multiple scale. The model design requirements for replica, multiple-scale, and hybrid models are developed, and the expected scaling of nonlinear dissipation in joints is derived. A damping prediction scheme is developed that relies on a finite element model of the undamped structure and measurements of the individual joint properties to predict the modal damping of the truss attributable to the joints. A hybrid-scaled model of a segment of the Space Station was built and dynamically tested. The predicted and measured truss damping compared favorably.

    Beschreibung: Elastic-plastic behavior of fibrous composite laminates is analyzed for coupled in-plane mechanical loads and uniform thermal changes. Constitutive equations of the individual fibrous layers are derived from a vanishing fiber diameter model that represents the essential axial constraint between the phases. This permits derivation of closed form equations for the overall yield condition, stress concentration factors, and instantaneous compliance. Thermoelastic properties of the phases and yield stress of the matrix phase are functions of temperature. The effect of the model assumptions on the predicted behavior of composite laminates is examined by comparing the calculated response under cyclic thermal changes to available theoretical results and experimental measurements.

    Beschreibung: An elasticity solution has been used to analyze matrix stresses near the fiber/matrix interface in continuous fiber-reinforced metal-matrix composites, modeling the micromechanics in question in terms of a cylindrical fiber and cylindrical matrix sheath which is embedded in an orthotropic medium representing the composite. The model's predictions for lamina thermal and mechanical properties are applied to a laminate analysis determining ply-level stresses due to thermomechanical loading. A comparison is made between these results, which assume cylindrical symmetry, and the predictions yielded by a FEM model in which the fibers are arranged in a square array.

    Beschreibung: A dual-control test system measuring the strength of graphite/epoxy specimens under tension and compression for a wide range of bearing-bypass load ratios is presented. The bearing-bypass strengths of single-fastener specimens are measured for damage onset and ultimate failure and are plotted against one another. The results indicate that an initiated damage grows to failure in the same mode for most cases. However, if the damage is initiated in the compression-reacted-bearing mode, the specimens fail in the offset-compression mode. It is concluded that this type of transition can occur in multi-fastener joints under compression and complicate the strength predictions.

    Beschreibung: Acoustic emission in 51-cm diameter graphite/epoxy pressure vessels was monitored during pressurization (hydrotesting). Several vessels were subjected to impact by a blunt impactor, but only after the vessels had been proofed; that is, pressurized to 80 percent of nominal burst pressure as determined from control (unimpacted) vessels. AE activity was then monitored throughout a series of successively higher pressure cycles ranging from 10 to 60 percent of ultimate. Each cycle included a ramp up to pressure followed by a 4-min hold period and then pressure unload. The event rate was high, and especially modified AE analyzers had to be used to acquire the data. This paper presents the AE event count versus pressure history of these tests and demonstrates the ability of the AE technique to monitor the growth of damage and to estimate the effect on ultimate strength. The number of events that occurred during pressure holds proved to be a reasonable estimator of vessel performance.

The model relates the process variables (winding speed, fiber tension, applied temperature) to the parameters characterizing the composite cylinder and the mandrel.     Beschreibung: A disordered structure with weakly coupled subsystems has localized modes with the vibratory energy concentrated in one part of the mode shape. The localization of modes may significantly affect the forced vibration response, increasing the maximum vibration amplitude dramatically in some cases. It is the scope of this paper to study the forced vibration of nearly periodic systems consisting of almost identical substructures and to analyze their free and forced dynamic responses probabilistically. It is shown that the sensitivity of the forced response to the degree of localization depends on a combination of the symmetry of the mode, which is excited, and the phase difference between the forces acting on each substructure. These results might explain the range of contrasting conclusions of earlier publications on the effects of forced response on mistuned structures. A probabilistic analysis of the free and forced responses of a nearly periodic structure is shown to be useful in the design of structures that are sensitive to the degree of localization. The results of the probabilistic analysis are verified using Monte Carlo simulation.

    Beschreibung: The question of load biaxiality strongly affecting almost all of the characteristics of brittle fracture behavior of a cracked body is investigated. Results of research published piecemeal over the years by the authors have shown that the stress and displacement fields, the elastic strain energy density, and the maximum shear stress near the crack tip are all altered by loads applied parallel to the crack, as are the angle of initial crack extension, the strain energy of the entire body, the fracture load, and the rate of fatigue crack growth. A synthesis and summary of this research is presented showing the shortcomings inherent in both Griffith's global energy rate theory for crack instability and Irwin's local crack-tip stress intensity theory for fracture toughness. In both theories only the tensile load perpendicular to the crack influences fracture behavior of the body.

    Beschreibung: The natural vibration frequencies of orthotropic and anisotropic, simply supported right circular cylinders are predicted using a theory which takes into account higher-order transverse shear deformation effects. A comparison between results based on first-order transverse shear deformation theory and the higher-order theory indicates that an additional allowance for transverse shear deformation has a negligible effect on the predicted natural vibration frequencies associated with long wavelengths, but significantly reduces the natural vibration frequencies associated with short wavelengths. Results of a parametric study of ply orientation for two classes of laminates indicates that while stacking sequence affects natural vibration frequencies, cylinder geometry and mode shape are more important in accurately predicting transverse shear deformation effects. Transverse shearing effects are less important in predicting natural vibration frequencies associated with long wavelength than in predicting axial compressive buckling loads.

    Beschreibung: As a precursor to the real-time control of fast moving adaptive structures used as space cranes, a formulation is given for the flexibility induced motion relative to the nominal motion (i.e., the motion that assumes no flexibility) and for obtaining the open loop time varying driving forces. An algorithm is proposed for the computation of the relative motion and driving forces. The governing equations are given in matrix form with explicit functional dependencies. A simulator is developed to implement the algorithm on a digital computer. In the formulations, the distributed mass of the crane is lumped by two schemes, vz., 'trapezoidal' lumping and 'Simpson's rule' lumping. The effects of the mass lumping schemes are shown by simulator runs.

    Beschreibung: The applicability and evaluation of a new self-starting, unconditionally stable, implicit methodology of computation for the dynamics of structures is described. The methodology offers different perspectives and architecture for structural dynamics compared with the traditional (widely advocated and commonly used) time integration methods. It is based on velocity representations and architecture and uses finite elements as the principal analysis tool for structural dynamic modeling/analysis. In particular, the dynamics of beam-type flexural models are considered, and comparative results validate and support the proposed use of the self-starting methodology of computation for the dynamics of linear/nonlinear structures. The overall effectiveness and elegance strongly support its use in most existing commercial codes.

    Beschreibung: Measurements of stress-induced velocity changes for propagation along the direction of applied stress in graphite/epoxy composites are presented. A linear relation between normalized velocity shift and stress is demonstrated for propagation and stress direction perpendicular to the fiber direction. The ratio of the SAC to the elastic compliance for this loading direction was assessed and found to have a value similar to that of numerous other materials which have very different linear elastic properties. Measurements with stress and propagation along the fibers yielded unusual behavior; the curves were very nonlinear and even shifted direction at higher loads.

    Beschreibung: A variety of structural analyses have been performed on the Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB's) to provide information that would contribute to the understanding of the failure which destroyed the Space Shuttle Challenger. This paper describes nonlinear shell analyses that were performed to characterize the behavior of an overall SRB structure and a segment of the SRB in the vicinity of the External Tank Attachment (ETA) ring. Shell finite element models were used that would accurately reflect the global load transfer in an SRB in a manner such that nonlinear shell collapse and ovalization could be assessed. The purpose of these analyses was to calculate the overall deflection and stress distributions for these SRB models when subjected to mechanical loads corresponding to critical times during the launch sequence. Static analyses of these SRB models were performed using a 'snapshot picture' of the loads. Analytical results obtained using these models show no evidence of nonlinear shell collapse for the pre-liftoff loading cases considered.

    Beschreibung: With the characteristics of high strength/weight and stiffness/weight ratios in advanced composite materials, composite plate structures have been successfully applied to secondary load-carrying structural components in the aerospace industry for the past two decades. Recently, filament wound composite shells are being considered for design of primary fuselage structures. To implement the design the structural response under various loading conditions needs to be predicted accurately. Therefore, it is essential to establish a rigorous analytical solution in the area of composite laminated shells. A closed form solution is presented that predicts the response of a composite shell subjected to internal pressure, axial tension, bending, and torsion. The material of the shell is assumed to be general cylindrically anisotropic. Based on the theory of cylindrical anisotropic elasticity coupled partial differential governing equations are developed using Lehknitskii's stress function approach. The general expressions for the stresses and displacements in the composite cylinders under these loading conditions is discussed. Three examples (45) off-axis unidirectional, (45/45) unsymmetric, and (45/45)(sub s) symmetric angle-ply fiber-reinforced laminated shells are shown to illustrate the effect of radius-to-thickness ratios, coupling, and stacking sequence.

    Beschreibung: For more than two decades, viscoelastic materials have been commonly used as a passive damping source in a variety of structures because of their high material loss factors. In most of the applications, viscoelastic materials are used either in series with or parallel to the structural load path. The latter is also known as the constrained-layer damping treatment. The advantage of the constrained-layer damping treatment is that it can be incorporated without loss in structural integrity, namely, stiffness and strength. However, the disadvantages are that: (1) it is not the most effective use of the viscoelastic material when compared with the series-type application, and (2) weight penalty from the stiff constraining layer requirement can be excessive. To overcome the disadvantages of the constrained-layer damping treatment, a new approach for using viscoelastic material in axial-type structural components, e.g., truss members, was studied in this investigation.

    Beschreibung: The purpose of this investigation is to develop an analytical method to study the vibration characteristics of piezoelectrically forced quartz plates. The procedure can be summarized as follows. The three dimensional governing equations of piezoelectricity, the constitutive equations and the strain-displacement relationships are used in deriving the final equations. For this purpose, a state vector consisting of stresses and displacements are chosen and the above equations are manipulated to obtain the projection of the derivative of the state vector with respect to the thickness coordinate on to the state vector itself. The solution to the state vector at any plane is then easily obtained in a closed form in terms of the state vector quantities at a reference plane. To simplify the analysis, simple thickness mode and plane strain approximations are used.

    Beschreibung: To establish the competitiveness of the revitalized family of Atlas launch vehicles (I, II, IIA, and IIAS) a new series of payload fairings, an 11-foot and a 14-foot diameter version, were designed to accommodate the widest possible variety of satellites. Because these aluminum fairings are new designs, the plant at which they are produced is new, and launch customers are very anxious to fly their payloads, an ambitious and efficient test program is essential. Five major tests have been planned for completion within the span of one calendar year. One of these has been completed, with every indication that it was a success, one is currently under way, and two more are scheduled to start in the month of April. Through effective use of test assets, facilities, and personnel, all testing will be completed, allowing the fairing design to be completely characterized and then qualified through analysis prior to first launch of each of the fairings.

    Beschreibung: Time-correlated gust loads are time histories of two or more load quantities due to the same disturbance time history. Time correlation provides knowledge of the value (magnitude and sign) of one load when another is maximum. At least two analysis methods have been identified that are capable of computing maximized time-correlated gust loads for linear aircraft. Both methods solve for the unit-energy gust profile (gust velocity as a function of time) that produces the maximum load at a given location on a linear airplane. Time-correlated gust loads are obtained by re-applying this gust profile to the airplane and computing multiple simultaneous load responses. Such time histories are physically realizable and may be applied to aircraft structures. Within the past several years there has been much interest in obtaining a practical analysis method which is capable of solving the analogous problem for nonlinear aircraft. Such an analysis method has been the focus of an international committee of gust loads specialists formed by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and was the topic of a panel discussion at the Gust and Buffet Loads session at the 1989 SDM Conference in Mobile, Alabama. The kinds of nonlinearities common on modern transport aircraft are indicated. The Statical Discrete Gust method is capable of being, but so far has not been, applied to nonlinear aircraft. To make the method practical for nonlinear applications, a search procedure is essential. Another method is based on Matched Filter Theory and, in its current form, is applicable to linear systems only. The purpose here is to present the status of an attempt to extend the matched filter approach to nonlinear systems. The extension uses Matched Filter Theory as a starting point and then employs a constrained optimization algorithm to attack the nonlinear problem.

    Beschreibung: Approaches to the combined design of structures and controllers for achieving optimal maneuverability are presented. A maneuverability index which directly reflects the minimum time required to perform a given set of maneuvers is introduced. By designing the flexible appendages, the maneuver time of the spacecraft is minimized under the constraints of structural properties, and post maneuver spillover is kept within a specified bound. The spillover reduction is achieved by making use of an appropriate reduced order model. The distributed parameter design problem is approached using assumed shape functions, and finite element analysis with dynamic reduction. Solution procedures have been investigated. Approximate design methods have been developed to overcome the computational difficulties. Some new constraints on the modal frequencies of the spacecraft are introduced in the original optimization problem to facilitate the solution process. It is shown that the global optimal design may be obtained by tuning the natural frequencies to satisfy specific constraints. Researchers quantify the difference between a lower bound to the solution for maneuver time associated with the original problem and the estimate obtained from the modified problem, for a specified application requirement. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the capability of this approach.

    Beschreibung: The problem is to find a global minimum for the Problem P. Necessary and sufficient conditions are available for local optimality. However, global solution can be assured only under the assumption of convexity of the problem. If the constraint set S is compact and the cost function is continuous on it, existence of a global minimum is guaranteed. However, in view of the fact that no global optimality conditions are available, a global solution can be found only by an exhaustive search to satisfy Inequality. The exhaustive search can be organized in such a way that the entire design space need not be searched for the solution. This way the computational burden is reduced somewhat. It is concluded that zooming algorithm for global optimizations appears to be a good alternative to stochastic methods. More testing is needed; a general, robust, and efficient local minimizer is required. IDESIGN was used in all numerical calculations which is based on a sequential quadratic programming algorithm, and since feasible set keeps on shrinking, a good algorithm to find an initial feasible point is required. Such algorithms need to be developed and evaluated.

    Beschreibung: The objective is to demonstrate discrete extremum methods of structural analysis as a tool for structural system reliability evaluation. Specifically, linear and multiobjective linear programming models for analysis of rigid plastic frames under proportional and multiparametric loadings, respectively, are considered. Kinematic and static approaches for analysis form a primal-dual pair in each of these models and have a polyhedral format. Duality relations link extreme points and hyperplanes of these polyhedra and lead naturally to dual methods for system reliability evaluation.

    Beschreibung: A quantitative methodology is being developed for assessment of risk of failure of solid rocket motors. This probabilistic methodology employs best available engineering models and available information in a stochastic framework. The framework accounts for incomplete knowledge of governing parameters, intrinsic variability, and failure model specification error. Earlier case studies have been conducted on several failure modes of the Space Shuttle Main Engine. Work in progress on application of this probabilistic approach to large solid rocket boosters such as the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor for the Space Shuttle is described. Failure due to debonding has been selected as the first case study for large solid rocket motors (SRMs) since it accounts for a significant number of historical SRM failures. Impact of incomplete knowledge of governing parameters and failure model specification errors is expected to be important.

    Beschreibung: Failures in service of aerospace structures and research at the Technion Aircraft Structures Laboratory have revealed that repeatedly buckled stiffened shear panels might be susceptible to premature fatigue failures. Extensive experimental and analytical studies have been performed at Technion on repeated buckling, far in excess of initial buckling, for both metal and composite shear panels with focus on the influence of the surrounding structure. The core of the experimental investigation consisted of repeated buckling and postbuckling tests on Wagner beams in a three-point loading system under realistic test conditions. The effects of varying sizes of stiffeners, of the magnitude of initial buckling loads, of the panel aspect ratio and of the cyclic shearing force, V sub cyc, were studied. The cyclic to critical shear buckling ratios, (V sub cyc/V sub cr) were on the high side, as needed for efficient panel design, yet all within possible flight envelopes. The experiments were supplemented by analytical and numerical analyses. For the metal shear panels the test and numerical results were synthesized into prediction formulas, which relate the life of the metal shear panels to two cyclic load parameters. The composite shear panels studied were hybrid beams with graphite/epoxy webs bonded to aluminum alloy frames. The test results demonstrated that composite panels were less fatigue sensitive than comparable metal ones, and that repeated buckling, even when causing extensive damage, did not reduce the residual strength by more than 20 percent. All the composite panels sustained the specified fatigue life of 250,000 cycles. The effect of local unstiffened holes on the durability of repeatedly buckled shear panels was studied for one series of the metal panels. Tests on 2024 T3 aluminum panels with relatively small unstiffened holes in the center of the panels demonstrated premature fatigue failure, compared to panels without holes. Preliminary tests on two graphite epoxy shear panels with small holes in the center showed no similar fatigue life degradation and no shift in failure mode. Further tests on the effect of holes are in progress.

    Beschreibung: Structural damping is an important dynamic characteristic of engineering materials that helps to damp vibrations by reducing their amplitudes. In this investigation, an experimental method is illustrated to determine the damping characteristics of engineering materials using a dual channel Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analyzer. A portable Compaq III computer which houses the analyzer, is used to collect the dynamic responses of three metal rods. Time-domain information is analyzed to obtain the logarithmic decrement of their damping. The damping coefficients are then compared to determine the variation of damping from material to material. The variations of damping from one point to another of the same material, due to a fixed point excitation, and the variable damping at a fixed point due to excitation at different points, are also demonstrated.

    Beschreibung: In the present analysis, deterministic flaw growth analysis is used to project the failure distributions from inspection data. Inspection data is reported for each critical point in the aircraft. The data will indicate either a crack of a specific size or no crack. The crack length may be either less than, equal to, or greater than critical size for that location. Non-critical length cracks are projected to failure using the crack growth characteristics for that location to find the life when it will be at critical length. Greater-than-critical length cracks are projected back to determine the life at failure, that is, when it was at critical length. The same process is used as in the case of a non-critical crack except that the projection goes the other direction. These points, along with the critical length cracks are used to determine the failure distribution. To be able to use data from different aircraft to build a common failure distribution, a consistent life variable must be used. Aircraft life varies with the severity of the usage; therefore the number of flight hours for a particular aircraft must be modified by its usage factor to obtain a normalized life which can be compared with that from other aircraft.

    Beschreibung: The research is focused on automating the evaluation of complex structural systems, whether for the design of a new system or the analysis of an existing one, by developing new structural analysis techniques based on qualitative reasoning. The problem is to identify and better understand: (1) the requirements for the automation of design, and (2) the qualitative reasoning associated with the conceptual development of a complex system. The long-term objective is to develop an integrated design-risk assessment environment for the evaluation of complex structural systems. The scope of this short presentation is to describe the design and cognition components of the research. Design has received special attention in cognitive science because it is now identified as a problem solving activity that is different from other information processing tasks (1). Before an attempt can be made to automate design, a thorough understanding of the underlying design theory and methodology is needed, since the design process is, in many cases, multi-disciplinary, complex in size and motivation, and uses various reasoning processes involving different kinds of knowledge in ways which vary from one context to another. The objective is to unify all the various types of knowledge under one framework of cognition. This presentation focuses on the cognitive science framework that we are using to represent the knowledge aspects associated with the human mind's abstraction abilities and how we apply it to the engineering knowledge and engineering reasoning in design.

    Beschreibung: This work-in-progress presentation describes an ongoing research activity at the NASA Langley Research Center to develop analytical methods for the prediction of aerothermoelastic stability of hypersonic aircraft including active control systems. The objectives of this research include application of aerothermal loads to the structural finite element model, determination of the thermal effects on flutter, and assessment of active controls technology applied to overcome any potential adverse aeroelastic stability or response problems due to aerodynamic heating- namely flutter suppression and ride quality improvement. For this study, a generic hypersonic aircraft configuration was selected which incorporates wing flaps, ailerons and all-moveable fins to be used for active control purposes. The active control systems would use onboard sensors in a feedback loop through the aircraft flight control computers to move the surfaces for improved structural dynamic response as the aircraft encounters atmospheric turbulence.

    Beschreibung: The first nine months of experimental and computational studies of the thermal-structural behavior of thin panels subjected to localized heating are described. Initial experimental studies have focused on developing an experimental set-up with well-defined thermal-structure boundary conditions. Preliminary tests with a Heldenfels panel have demonstrated out of plane bending (thermal buckling) due to panel initial imperfections. Initial computational studies have focused on: (1) validation of a thermoviscoplastic code to predict thermal stresses in the unbuckled panel, and (2) investigating in-plane stresses for test panels under transient thermal loading. Plans for future research are described.

    Beschreibung: The purpose of this experiment is to familiarize the student with magnetic particle inspection and relate it to classification of various defects. Magnetic particle inspection is a method of detecting the presence of cracks, laps, tears, inclusions, and similar discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as iron and steel. This method will most clearly show defects that are perpendicular to the magnetic field. The Magnaglo method uses a liquid which is sprayed on the workpiece to be inspected, and the part is magnetized at the same time. The workpiece is then viewed under a black light, and the presence of discontinuity is shown by the formation of a bright indication formed by the magnetic particles over the discontinuity. The equipment and experimental procedures are described.

    Beschreibung: Due to a certain type of loading and geometrical boundary conditions, each beam will respond differently depending on its geometrical form of the cross section and its material definition. As an example, consider an isotropic rectangular beam under pure bending. Plane sections perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the beam will remain plane and perpendicular to the deformed axis after deformation. However, due to the Poisson effect, particles in the planes will move relative to each other resulting in a form of anticlastic deformation. In other words, even in pure bending of an isotropic beam, each cross section will deform in the plane. If the material of the beam above is replaced by a generally anisotropic material, then the cross sections will not only deform in the plane, but also out of plane. Hence, in general, both in-plane deformation and out-of-plane warping will exist and depend on the geometrical form and material definition of the cross sections and also on the loadings. For the purpose of explanation, an analogy is made. The geometrical forms of the bodies of each individual are unique. Hence, different sizes of clothes are needed. Finding the sizes of clothes for individuals is like determining the warping functions in beams. A new beam theory using first-order warping functions is introduced. Numerical examples will be presented for an isotropic beam with rectangular cross section. The theory can be extended for composite beams.

    Beschreibung: The phenomenon of peeling and debonding of thin layers is a subject of interest to those concerned with adhesives, thin films, and layered materials. In recent years much attention has been focused on such problems as a result of increased interest and application of advanced composites and thin film coatings. A related problem which is of interest for its own sake but also represents a simple example of a tangled adhesive strip and of coplanar delamination interaction, is the problem of a looped adhesive strip. This is the subject of the present study. Researchers consider here the problem of an elastic strip which possesses an adherend on (at least) one of its surfaces. If the strip is deformed so that two portions of such a surface are brought into contact, a position of the strip becomes bonded and a loop is formed. Researchers are interested in determining the equilibrium configuration of such a strip and investigating the behavior of the strip when its edges are pulled apart. The problem is approached as a moving interior boundary problem in the calculus of variations with the strip modeled as an inextensible elastica and the bond strength characterized by its surface energy. A Griffith type energy criterion is employed for debonding, and solutions corresponding to the problem of interest obtained. The solution obtained will be seen to predict the interesting phenomenon of bond point propagation, as well as the more standard peeling type behavior. Numerical results demonstrating the phenomena of interest are presented as well and will be seen to reveal both stable and unstable propagation of the boundaries of the bonded portion of the strip, depending upon the loading conditions.

    Beschreibung: The purpose of this work-in-progress is to present a semi-empirical analysis method developed to predict the buckling and crippling loads of carbon/epoxy fabric blade stiffened panels in compression. This is a hand analysis method comprised of well known, accepted techniques, logical engineering judgements, and experimental data that results in conservative solutions. In order to verify this method, a stiffened panel was fabricated and tested. Both the best and analysis results are presented.

    Beschreibung: Probabilistic methods and generic load models capable of simulating the load spectra that are induced in space propulsion system components are being developed. Four engine component types (the transfer ducts, the turbine blades, the liquid oxygen posts and the turbopump oxidizer discharge duct) were selected as representative hardware examples. The composite load spectra that simulate the probabilistic loads for these components are typically used as the input loads for a probabilistic structural analysis. The knowledge-based system approach used for the composite load spectra project provides an ideal environment for incremental development. The intelligent database paradigm employed in developing the expert system provides a smooth coupling between the numerical processing and the symbolic (information) processing. Large volumes of engine load information and engineering data are stored in database format and managed by a database management system. Numerical procedures for probabilistic load simulation and database management functions are controlled by rule modules. Rules were hard-wired as decision trees into rule modules to perform process control tasks. There are modules to retrieve load information and models. There are modules to select loads and models to carry out quick load calculations or make an input file for full duty-cycle time dependent load simulation. The composite load spectra load expert system implemented today is capable of performing intelligent rocket engine load spectra simulation. Further development of the expert system will provide tutorial capability for users to learn from it.

    Beschreibung: A scheme is proposed to monitor the adequacy of a set of Ritz modes to represent a solution by comparing the quantity generated with certain properties involving the forcing function. In so doing an attempt was made to keep this algorithm lean and efficient, so that it will be economical to apply. Using this monitoring scheme during Ritz Mode generation will automatically ensure that the k Ritz modes theta k that are generated are adequate to represent both the spatial and temporal behavior of the structure when forced under the given transient condition defined by F(s,t).

    Beschreibung: The propagation of power flow through a dynamically loaded beam model with 90 degree bends is investigated using NASTRAN and McPOW. The transitioning of power flow types (axial, torsional, and flexural) is observed throughout the structure. To get accurate calculations of the torsional response of beams using NASTRAN, torsional inertia effects had to be added to the mass matrix calculation section of the program. Also, mass effects were included in the calculation of BAR forces to improve the continuity of power flow between elements. The importance of including all types of power flow in an analysis, rather than only flexural power, is indicated by the example. Trying to interpret power flow results that only consider flexural components in even a moderately complex problem will result in incorrect conclusions concerning the total power flow field.

    Beschreibung: NASHUA is a coupled finite element/boundary element capability built around NASTRAN for calculating the low frequency far-field acoustic pressure field radiated or scattered by an arbitrary, submerged, three-dimensional, elastic structure subjected to either internal time-harmonic mechanical loads or external time-harmonic incident loadings. Described here are the formulation and use of NASHUA for solving such structural acoustics problems when the structure is fluid-filled. NASTRAN is used to generate the structural finite element model and to perform most of the required matrix operations. Both fluid domains are modeled using the boundary element capability in NASHUA, whose matrix formulation (and the associated NASTRAN DMAP) for evacuated structures can be used with suitable interpretation of the matrix definitions. After computing surface pressures and normal velocities, far-field pressures are evaluated using an asymptotic form of the Helmholtz exterior integral equation. The proposed numerical approach is validated by comparing the acoustic field scattered from a submerged fluid-filled spherical thin shell to that obtained with a series solution, which is also derived here.

    Beschreibung: A nonlinear elastic force-displacement relationship is used to calculate the transient impact force and local deformation at the point of contact between impactor and target. The nonlinear analysis and transfer function capabilities of NASTRAN are used to define a finite element model that behaves globally linearly elastic, and locally nonlinear elastic to model the local contact behavior. Results are presented for two different structures: a uniform cylindrical rod impacted longitudinally; and an orthotropic plate impacted transversely. Calculated impact force and transient structural response of the targets are shown to compare well with results measured in experimental tests.

    Beschreibung: In modeling a complex structure the researcher was faced with a component that would have logical appeal if it were modeled as a beam. The structure was a mast of a robot controlled gantry crane. The structure up to this point already had a large number of degrees of freedom, so the idea of conserving grid points by modeling the mast as a beam was attractive. The researcher decided to make a separate problem of of the mast and model it in three dimensions with plates, then extract the equivalent beam properties by setting up the loading to simulate beam-like deformation and constraints. The results could then be used to represent the mast as a beam in the full model. A comparison was made of properties derived from models of different constraints versus manual calculations. The researcher shows that the three-dimensional model is ineffective in trying to conform to the requirements of an equivalent beam representation. If a full 3-D plate model were used in the complete representation of the crane structure, good results would be obtained. Since the attempt is to economize on the size of the model, a better way to achieve the same results is to use substructuring and condense the mast to equivalent end boundary and intermediate mass points.

    Beschreibung: During liftoff and ascent flight phases, the Space Transportation System (STS) and payloads are exposed to the random acoustic environment produced by engine exhaust plumes and aerodynamic disturbances. The analysis of payloads for randomly fluctuating loads is usually carried out using the Miles' relationship. This approximation technique computes an equivalent load factor as a function of the natural frequency of the structure, the power spectral density of the excitation, and the magnification factor at resonance. Due to the assumptions inherent in Miles' equation, random load factors are often over-estimated by this approach. In such cases, the estimates can be refined using alternate techniques such as time domain simulations or frequency domain spectral analysis. Described here is the use of NASTRAN to compute more realistic random load factors through spectral analysis. The procedure is illustrated using Spacelab Life Sciences (SLS-1) payloads and certain unique features of this problem are described. The solutions are compared with Miles' results in order to establish trends at over or under prediction.

    Beschreibung: COSMIC/NASTRAN, as it is supported and maintained by COSMIC, runs on four main-frame computers - CDC, VAX, IBM and UNIVAC. COSMIC/NASTRAN on other computers, such as CRAY, AMDAHL, PRIME, CONVEX, etc., is available commercially from a number of third party organizations. All these computers, with their own one-of-a-kind operating systems, make NASTRAN machine dependent. The job control language (JCL), the file management, and the program execution procedure of these computers are vastly different, although 95 percent of NASTRAN source code was written in standard ANSI FORTRAN 77. The advantage of the UNIX operating system is that it has no machine boundary. UNIX is becoming widely used in many workstations, mini's, super-PC's, and even some main-frame computers. NASTRAN for the UNIX operating system is definitely the way to go in the future, and makes NASTRAN available to a host of computers, big and small. Since 1985, many NASTRAN improvements and enhancements were made to conform to the ANSI FORTRAN 77 standards. A major UNIX migration effort was incorporated into COSMIC NASTRAN 1990 release. As a pioneer work for the UNIX environment, a version of COSMIC 89 NASTRAN was officially released in October 1989 for DEC ULTRIX VAXstation 3100 (with VMS extensions). A COSMIC 90 NASTRAN version for DEC ULTRIX DECstation 3100 (with RISC) is planned for April 1990 release. Both workstations are UNIX based computers. The COSMIC 90 NASTRAN will be made available on a TK50 tape for the DEC ULTRIX workstations. Previously in 1988, an 88 NASTRAN version was tested successfully on a SiliconGraphics workstation.

    Beschreibung: The NASTRAN user has the option of using either a lumped-mass matrix or a consistent- (coupled-) mass matrix with the QUAD4 shell finite element. At the Sixteenth NASTRAN Users' Colloquium (1988), Melvyn Marcus and associates of the David Taylor Research Center summarized a study comparing the results of the QUAD4 element with results of other NASTRAN shell elements for a cylindrical-shell modal analysis. Results of this study, in which both the lumped-and consistent-mass matrix formulations were used, implied that the consistent-mass matrix yielded poor results. In an effort to further evaluate the consistent-mass matrix, a study was performed using both a cylindrical-shell geometry and a flat-plate geometry. Modal parameters were extracted for several modes for both geometries leading to some significant conclusions. First, there do not appear to be any fundamental errors associated with the consistent-mass matrix. However, its accuracy is quite different for the two different geometries studied. The consistent-mass matrix yields better results for the flat-plate geometry and the lumped-mass matrix seems to be the better choice for cylindrical-shell geometries.

    Beschreibung: The accuracy of the relatively new QUAD4 thick shell element is assessed via comparison with a theoretical solution for thick homogeneous and honeycomb flat simply supported plates under the action of a uniform pressure load. The theoretical thick plate solution is based on the theory developed by Reissner and includes the effects of transverse shear flexibility which are not included in the thin plate solutions based on Kirchoff plate theory. In addition, the QUAD4 is assessed using a set of finite element test problems developed by the MacNeal-Schwendler Corp. (MSC). Comparison of the COSMIC QUAD4 element as well as those from MSC and Universal Analytics, Inc. (UAI) for these test problems is presented. The current COSMIC QUAD4 element is shown to have excellent comparison with both the theoretical solutions and also those from the two commercial versions of NASTRAN that it was compared to.

    Beschreibung: The amount of programming required to develop a PATRAN-NASTRAN translator was surprisingly small. The approach taken produced a highly flexible translator comparable with the PATNAS translator and superior to the PATCOS translator. The coding required varied from around ten lines for a shell element to around thirty for a bar element, and the time required to add a feature to the program is typically less than an hour. The use of a lookup table for element names makes the translator also applicable to other versions of NASTRAN. The saving in time as a result of using PDA's Gateway utilities was considerable. During the writing of the program it became apparent that, with a somewhat more complex structure, it would be possible to extend the element data file to contain all data required to define the translation from PATRAN to NASTRAN by mapping of data between formats. Similar data files on property, material and grid formats would produce a completely universal translator from PATRAN to any FEA program, or indeed any CAE system.
