    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a generalization of what is frequently referred to in the literature as the optimality criteria approach in structural optimization. This generalization includes a unified presentation of the optimality conditions, the Lagrangian multipliers, and the resizing and scaling algorithms in terms of the sensitivity derivatives of the constraint and objective functions. The by-product of this generalization is the derivation of a set of simple nondimensional parameters which provides significant insight into the behavior of the structure as well as the optimization algorithm. A number of important issues, such as, active and passive variables, constraints and three types of linking are discussed in the context of the present derivation of the optimality criteria approach. The formulation as presented in this paper brings multidisciplinary optimization within the purview of this extremely efficient optimality criteria approach.

    Notes: This paper presents an optimization method based on optimality criterion for minimum weight of structures with stability requirements. A recurrence relation is derived and the method is explained in the context of the displacement method of finite element analysis. The incipient buckling of the structure is determined by a linear eigenvalue solution. The method is programmed for trusses and frames. Illustrative problems are given to show the applicability of the method of design of structures with a large number of design variables.

    Notes: The problem of design of actively controlled structures subject to restrictions on the damping parameters of the closed-loop system is formulated and solved as a multiobjective optimization problem. The purpose of control is to effectively suppress structural vibrations due to initial excitation. The cross-sectional areas of the members are treated as design variables. The structural weight and the controlled system energy are considered as objective functions for minimization. The goal programming approach is used for the solution of the multiobjective optimization problems. The procedure is illustrated through numerical simulations using two-bar and twelve-bar truss structures.

    Notes: The sensitivity of the closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors of actively controlled flexible structures with distinct eigenvalues is considered. The sensitivity information is essential in the optimization of large space structures with stability/performance robustness, closed-loop eigenvalues or damping ratios treated as objective or constraint functions. The efficiency of the analytical expressions derived for the rates of change of the closed-loop eigenvalues with respect to structural design variables is demonstrated through two numerical examples. The utility of the sensitivity of the closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors in evaluating the derivatives of the stability and performance robustness indices is also indicated and illustrated through numerical examples.

    Description: The objective is to set up and analyze benchmark problems on multibody dynamics and to verify the predictions of two multibody computer simulation codes. TREETOPS and DISCOS have been used to run three example problems - one degree-of-freedom spring mass dashpot system, an inverted pendulum system, and a triple pendulum. To study the dynamics and control interaction, an inverted planar pendulum with an external body force and a torsional control spring was modeled as a hinge connected two-rigid body system. TREETOPS and DISCOS affected the time history simulation of this problem. System state space variables and their time derivatives from two simulation codes were compared.

    Description: A computer program was developed to take a NASTRAN output file from a normal modes analysis and calculate the modal strain energies of selected elements. The FORTRAN program can determine the modal strain energies for CROD, CBAR, CELAS, CTRMEM, CQDMEM2, and CSHEAR elements. Modal strain energies are useful in estimating damping in structures.

    Description: A generalized optimality criterion method consisting of a dual problem solver combined with a compound scaling algorithm was implemented in the multidisciplinary design tool, ASTROS. This method enables, for the first time in a production design tool, the determination of a minimum weight design using thousands of independent structural design variables while simultaneously considering constraints on response quantities in several disciplines. Even for moderately large examples, the computational efficiency is improved significantly relative to the conventional approach.

    Description: A method for simultaneous structural and control design of large flexible space structures (LFSS) to reduce vibration generated by disturbances is presented. Desired natural frequencies and damping ratios for the closed loop system are achieved by using a combination of linear quadratic regulator (LQR) synthesis and numerical optimization techniques. The state and control weighing matrices (Q and R) are expressed in terms of structural parameters such as mass and stiffness. The design parameters are selected by numerical optimization so as to minimize the weight of the structure and to achieve the desired closed-loop eigenvalues. An illustrative example of the design of a two bar truss is presented.
