Description: Under certain conditions, ocean surface gravity waves (SGW) interact with the seafloor underneath to trigger relatively faint but measurable seismic waves known as ocean microseisms. Cyclonic storms (e.g. hurricanes, typhoons) wandering over the ocean are major (non-stationary) sources of the former, thus opening the possibility of tracking and studying cyclones by means of their corresponding microseims. For this purpose, we identified storm-related microseisms hidden in the ambient seismic wavefield via array processing. Polarization beamforming, a robust and well-known technique is implemented. The analyses hinge on surface waves (Love and Rayleigh) which, in contrast to P-waves, are stronger but only constrain direction of arrival (without source remoteness). We use a few land-based virtual seismic arrays surrounding the North Atlantic to investigate the signatures of major hurricanes in the microseismic band (0.05-0.16 Hz), in a joint attempt to continuously triangulate their tracks. Our findings show that storm microseisms are intermittently excited with modulated amplitude at localized oceanic regions, particularly over the shallow continental shelves and slopes, having maximum amplitudes virtually independent of storm category. In most cases no detection was possible over deep oceanic regions, nor at distant arrays. Additionally, the rear quadrants and trailing swells of the cyclone provide the optimum SGW spectrum for the generation of microseisms, often shifted more than 500 km off the "eye". As a result of the aforementioned and added to the strong attenuation of storm microseisms, the inversion of tracks or physical properties of storms using a few far-field arrays is discontinuous in most cases, being reliable only if benchmark atmospheric and/or oceanic data is available for comparison. Even if challenging due to the complexity of the coupled phenomena responsible for microseisms, the inversion of site properties, such as bathymetric parameters (e.g. depth, seabed geomorphology), near- bottom geology or SGW spectrum might be possible if storms are treated as natural sources in time-lapse ambient noise investigations. This will likely require near-field (land and underwater) observations using optimal arrays or dense, widespread sensor networks. Improved detection and understanding of ocean microseisms carries a great potential to contribute to mechanically coupled atmosphere-ocean-earth models.

Description: This work focuses on the observation of data recorded by the seismic temporary network installed in the Amatrice area, under the umbrella of the Italian Center for Seismic Microzonation (http://www.centromicrozonazionesismica.it), following the M 6.0 earthquake of August 24, 2016 in Central Italy. The aim was studying the presence of an evident late low frequency wave packet observed in some of the recorded aftershocks. In order to interpret this phenomenon, we combined a beam-forming analysis performed on these data with the statistics on residuals of localizations related to the same events, recorded by the Italian Seismic Network (RSN). The total number of analyzed events, characterized by M≥=3 and epicentral distances between 30 and 55 Km, is 356. By observing the seismic traces of these events there was an evidence, in some of them, of a low frequency packet appearing 10 seconds after the first arrival. The evidence of this packet was correlated with epicentral distance and focal depth. For a subset of stations, considered as an array, a beam-forming analysis was performed by using the ObsPy toolbox (M. Beyreuther et al., 2010). Results of this analysis gave information in terms of slowness and azimuth to distinguish the main seismic phases of the considered events. In addition, by using locations of the RSN records (Chiaraluce et al., 2017), we performed a parallel analysis within the subset of events with clear evidence of the low frequency packet. We relocated these events by using the NonLinLoc code, with a fixed 1D P-wave velocity model, and varying the Vp/ Vs ratio in the range 1.6–2.0. We found that the P phases residuals are not influenced by the Vp/Vs ratio changes whereas the higher the Vp/Vs the lower are the S phases residuals. Higher values of Vp/Vs ratio, fixing Vp values, could mean a decrease of Vs connected to particular effects during the seismic waves path, that are probably due to geological heterogeneities at local or larger scale

Description: Following the M 6.0 of August 24 2016 Amatrice earthquake, a temporary seismic network was installed in the village of Amatrice, under the umbrella of the Italian Center for Seismic Microzonation (http://www.centromicrozonazionesismica.it), who conducted a preparatory survey to seismic microzonation with other Italian Institutions. This work focuses on data analysis of 7 stations installed in the Amatrice terrace which is representative of the geological condition of the town, with the aim of studying the possible presence of secondary effects during the seismic sequence caused by site conditions. Stiff bedrock outcroppings were also sampled with 2 reference stations. Preliminary analyses carried out on several earthquakes with Ml 〉 4 highlight the presence of a low frequency phase with a high energy content at 6 -7 seconds after the first P-wave arrival in almost all the recordings. This wave package was observed for the Mw 6.5 of October 30 earthquake and it has the highest amplitude of the entire recordings, having PGA values of 0.5 g and frequency between 2 and 3 Hz. Frequency-wavenumber analysis performed for the 7 stations array gives an important contribution for the interpretation of this phenomenon, showing that the low frequency wave-package for the examined events does not always show back-azimuth and slowness values compatible with the very first portion of the seismic record. It could be associated to the presence of reflected or refracted waves generated by secondary effects as geological or morphological heterogeneities at local or larger scale.

Description: Normal fault systems, outcropping or hidden below Quaternary covers in intermountain basins, are the expression of the Neogene-Quaternary evolution of central Italy, characterized by an extensional tectonic regime following the fold and thrust structuring of the Appenninic orogen. The presence of these features plays an important role in seismic risk evaluation of an area. In this work we deal with the use of single-station seismic noise measurements to detect sudden lateral variations of the geometries and/or properties of subsoil connected to the presence of tectonic elements (fault zones). Ambient noise data were collected along transects perpendicular to the strike of hypothetical fault lines for 3 test sites within the Abruzzi Region. The proposed approach is suitable for detecting in a fast and simple way local lateral changes in the subsoil characteristics close to geological structures and can be very effective to properly address more expensive and time consuming classical geophysical and paleoseismological approaches.

Description: In this work we tested the capability of single station ambient noise spectral ratios (HVNSR) technique to be used as a proxy for detecting sharp variations in the subsoil characteristics in sedimentary basins. In sites characterized by 1D response HVNSR is able to detect the resonance frequency of sediments (f0) to be related with their thickness and velocity. In quasi-1D geological situation, a smooth variation in the resonance frequency suggests some variation in the thickness of the soft sedimentary layers or in their velocity. In the case of sharp lateral variation of the subsoil, as in presence of morphological steps or buried faults in the bedrock, the noise wave-field becomes more complex and spectral ratios show some directional effect strictly related to the presence of the lateral heterogeneity (Matsushima et al. 2014). In this work we focus our attention on the detection of a buried shallow tectonic element known in bibliography (Galadini, Galli 1999) as the Luco dei Marsi fault, located in the western margin of the Fucino basin (central Appenines, Italy). We performed simultaneous ambient noise measurements using MarsLite digitizers equipped with Lennarts 3d-5s velocimeters along a transect, with inter-station distance between 30 and 50 meters, which crosses perpendicularly the surface projection of fault line. The collected data, analyzed with classical HVNSR technique, show some complexities in the f0 distribution compatible with the presence of the buried fault. In detail, our results highlight a 1D response with a clear resonance peak for the stations located away from the fault. Moving closer to the fault line, where the 1D condition is not verified, the resonance peak becomes broader. Directional analysis of spectral ratios suggests the dependence of the noise wave-field to the presence of the fault line. Close to the geological feature, results of directional analysis show a doubling in the resonance frequency with relative amplitudes changing for fault-parallel and fault-normal direction of polarization. To support with an independent approach our observations, an electrical resistivity tomography was performed along the transect whose results show the presence of a clear step in a high resistivity shallow layer that can be assumed as the bedrock. After this analysis we decided to extend the ambient noise transect towards the centre of the basin where no fault line is mapped and where we expected a smooth lowering of f0 values due to the deepening of the bedrock. This feature was really observed for a while but at a distance between 400 and 500 meters from the Luco fault we detected again some anomaly in HVNSR data with a doubling of resonance frequency and relative amplitudes depending from the direction of polarization. This observation suggests the presence of deeper tectonic element parallel to the Luco fault. As a conclusion of our work we believe that HVNSR and polarization analysis can represent a quick and fast method to hypothesize the presence of buried discontinuity in the subsoil and can be usefully used to guide the positioning of more sophisticated geophysical analysis aimed at mapping their geometries.

Description: This paper presents a jig twist optimization study of Mach 0.745 Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW) aircraft using an in-house developed aero-structural analysis solver VSPAERO coupled to BEAM3D. A vortex-lattice model of the TTBW model is developed, and a transonic and viscous flow correction method is implemented in the VSPAERO model to account for transonic and viscous flow effects. A correction method for the wing-strut interference aerodynamics is developed and applied to the VSPAERO solver. Also, a structural dynamic finite-element model of the TTBW aircraft is developed. This finite-element model includes the geometric nonlinear effect due to the tension in the struts which causes a deflection-dependent nonlinear stiffness. The VSPAERO model is coupled to the corresponding finite-element model to provide a rapid aero-structural analysis. A design flight condition corresponding to Mach 0.745 at 42000 ft is selected for the TTBW aircraft jig twist optimization to reduce the drag coefficient. After the design is implemented, the drag coefficient of the twist optimized TTBW aircraft is reduced about 8 counts. At the end, a high-fidelity CFD solver FUN3D is used to validate the design.

Description: Urban Air Mobility (UAM) describes a new type of aviation focused on efficient flight within urban areas for moving people and goods. There are many different configurations of UAM vehicles, but they generally use an electric motor driving a propeller or ducted fan powered by batteries or a hybrid electric power generation system. Transmission cables are used to move energy from the storage or generation system to the electric motors. Though terrestrial power transmission cables are well established technology, aviation applications bring a whole host of new design challenges that are not typical considerations in terrestrial applications. Aircraft power transmission cable designs must compromise between resistance-per-length, weight-per-length, volume constraints, and other essential qualities. In this paper we use a multidisciplinary design optimization to explore the sensitivity of these qualities to a representative tiltwing turboelectric UAM aircraft concept. This is performed by coupling propulsion and thermal models for a given mission criteria. Results presented indicate that decreasing cable weight at the expense of increasing cable volume or cooling demand is effective at minimizing maximum takeoff weight (MTO). These findings indicate that subsystem designers should update their modeling approach in order to contribute to system-level optimality for highly-coupled novel aircraft. Mobility (UAM) vehicles have the potential to change urban and intra-urban transport in new and interesting ways. In a series of two papers Johnson et al.1 and Silva et al.2 presented four reference vehicle configurations that could service different niches in the UAM aviation category. Of those, this paper focuses on the Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) tiltwing configuration shown in Figure 1. This configuration uses a turboelectric power system, feeding power from a turbo-generator through a system of transmission cables to four motors spinning large propellers on the wings. Previous work on electric cable subsystems leaves much yet to be explored, especially in the realm of subsystem coupling. Several aircraft optimization studies1, 3, 4 only considered aircraft electrical cable weight and ignored thermal effects. Electric and hybrid-electric aircraft studies by Mueller et al.5 and Hoelzen et al.6 selected a cable material but did not investigate alternative materials. Advanced cable materials have been examined by a number of authors: Alvarenga7 examined carbon nanotube (CNT) conductors for low-power applications. De Groh8, 9 examined CNT conductors for motor winding applications. Behabtu et al.,10 and Zhao et al.11 examined CNT conductors for a general applications. There were some studies that examined the thermal effects of cables but they did not allow the cable material to change; El-Kady12 optimized ground-cable insulation and cooling subject constraints. Vratny13 selected cable material based on vehicle power demand, and required resulting cable heat to be dissipated by the Thermal Management System (TMS). None of these previous studies allowed for the selection of the cable material based on a system level optimization goal. Instead, they focused on sub-system optimality such as minimum weight, which comes at the expense of incurring additional costs for other subsystems. Dama14 selected overhead transmission line materials using a weighting function and thermal constraints. However, that work was not coupled with any aircraft subsystems like a TMS. The traditional aircraft design approach, which relies on assembling groups of optimal subsystems, breaks down when considering novel aircraft concepts like the tiltwing vehicle. In a large part, this is because novel concepts have a much higher degree of interaction or coupling between subsystems. For example, when a cable creates heat, this heat needs to be dissipated by the TMS, which needs power supplied by the turbine, and delivering the power creates more heat. The cable, the TMS, and the turbine are all coupled. A change to one subsystem will affect all the other subsystems, much to the consternation of subsystem design experts. Multidisciplinary optimization is the design approach that can address these challenges. However, to fully take advantage of this, we must change the way we think about subsystem design. Specifically, we must move away from point design, and focus on creating solution spaces. The work presented in this paper uses the multidisciplinary optimization approach with aircraft level models to study the system-level sensitivity of cable traits: weight-per-length and resistance-per-length. Additionally, we examined the effects of vehicle imposed volume constraints on these traits. This is useful for three purposes: (1) to demonstrate a framework that can perform a coupled analysis between the aircraft thermal and propulsion systems, (2) to provide a method by which future cable designs can be evaluated against each other given a system-level design goal, (3) to provide insight into what cable properties may be promising for future research. This last element is explored given the caveat that the models contained in this analysis do not represent high-fidelity systems. Thus, while we can demonstrate coupling in between systems, the exact system-level sensitivity to a given parameter may change if a subsystem model or the assumptions governing that model change. The organization of this paper is as follows, in Sec II we outline a method to combine the VTOL vehicle design and cable information in order to produce cables sensitivity studies. Results analysis and discussion are contained in Sec III. Conclusions are presented in Sec IV.

Description: This paper determined the feasibility of an adaptive hexapod simulator motion algorithm based on aircraft roll stability. An experiment was conducted that used a transport aircraft model in the Vertical Motion Simulator at NASA Ames Research Center. Eighteen general aviation pilots flew a heading-capture task and a stall task consecutively under four motion configurations: baseline hexapod, adaptive hexapod, optimized hexapod, and full motion. The adaptive motion was more similar to the baseline hexapod motion in the heading-capture task when the aircraft was more stable, and more similar to the optimized hexapod motion in the stall task when the aircraft was more unstable. Pilot motion ratings and task performance in the heading-capture task under the adaptive hexapod motion were more similar to baseline hexapod motion compared to optimized hexapod motion. However, motion ratings and task performance in the stall task under the adaptive motion were not significantly more similar to the optimized hexapod motion compared to baseline hexapod motion. Motion ratings and overall task performance under optimized hexapod motion as opposed to baseline hexapod motion were always more similar to the full motion condition. This paper showed that adaptive motion based on aircraft stability is feasible and can be implemented in a straightforward way. More research is required to test the adaptive motion algorithm in different tasks.

Description: This paper discusses a wind tunnel experiment of active gust load alleviation of a flexible wing which took place at University of Washington (UW) in 2019. The experiment performed under a NASA SBIR contract with Scientific Systems Company, Inc (SSCI). The objective of the experiment is to demonstrate active controls of the Variable Camber Continuous Trailing Edge Flap (VCCTEF) system for gust load alleviation and real-time drag optimization. The wind tunnel model is a 8.2% sub-scale Common Research Model (CRM) wing. The wing structure is designed to provide a substantial degree of flexibility to represent that of a modern high-aspect ratio wing. Eight active control surfaces are employed in the VCCTEF. A new gust generator system was designed and installed by UW under a sub-contract with SSCI. The first test entry started in July 2019 and ended in September 2019. During this test entry, many significant issues were found with the hardware and software. The significant issues with the servos prevented the test objective from being completed. A follow-up second test entry in 2020 is being planned. The wing system is being repaired by SSCI. This paper reports on the progress of this experimental effort and the aeroservoelastic (ASE) model validation which was conducted during the test entry.

Description: An investigation was conducted on a 35 deg swept-wing fighter airplane to determine the effects of several blunt-trailing-edge modifications to the wing and tail on the high-speed stability and control characteristics and tracking performance. The results indicated significant improvement in the pitch-up characteristics for the blunt-aileron configuration at Mach numbers around 0.90. As a result of increased effectiveness of the blunt-trailing-edge aileron, the roll-off, customarily experienced with the unmodified airplane in wings-level flight between Mach numbers of about 0.9 and 1.0 was eliminated, The results also indicated that the increased effectiveness of the blunt aileron more than offset the large associated aileron hinge moment, resulting in significant improvement in the rolling performance at Mach numbers between 0.85 and 1.0. It appeared from these results that the tracking performance with the blunt-aileron configuration in the pitch-up and buffeting flight region at high Mach numbers was considerably improved over that of the unmodified airplane; however, the tracking errors of 8 to 15 mils were definitely unsatisfactory. A drag increment of about O.OOl5 due to the blunt ailerons was noted at Mach numbers to about 0.85. The drag increment was 0 at Mach numbers above 0.90.

Description: Measurement of average skin-friction coefficients have been made on six rocket-powered free-flight models by using the boundary-layer rake technique. The model configuration was the NACA RM-10, a 12.2-fineness-ratio parabolic body of revolution with a flat base. Measurements were made over a Mach number range from 1 to 3.7, a Reynolds number range 40 x 10(exp 6) to 170 x 10(exp 6) based on length to the measurement station, and with aerodynamic heating conditions varying from strong skin heating to strong skin cooling. The measurements show the same trends over the test ranges as Van Driest's theory for turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate. The measured values are approximately 7 percent higher than the values of the flat-plate theory. A comparison which takes into account the differences in Reynolds number is made between the present results and skin-friction measurements obtained on NACA RM-10 scale models in the Langley 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel, the Lewis 8- by 6-foot supersonic tunnel, and the Langley 9-inch supersonic tunnel. Good agreement is shown at all but the lowest tunnel Reynolds number conditions. A simple empirical equation is developed which represents the measurements over the range of the tests.

Description: An investigation has been conducted to determine the static stability and control and damping in roll and yaw of a 0.13-scale model of the Convair XFY-1 airplane with propellers off from 0 deg to 90 deg angle of attack. The tests showed that a slightly unstable pitch-up tendency occurred simultaneously with a break in the normal-force curve in the angle-of-attack range from about 27 deg to 36 deg. The top vertical tail contributed positive values of static directional stability and effective dihedral up to an angle of attack of about 35 deg. The bottom tail contributed positive values of static directional stability but negative values of effective dihedral throughout the angle-of-attack range. Effectiveness of the control surfaces decreased to very low values at the high angles of attack, The model had positive damping in yaw and damping in roll about the body axes over the angle-of-attack range but the damping in yaw decreased to about zero at 90 deg angle of attack.

Description: Altitude performance characteristics of the J65-B3 turbojet engine and its components were obtained at engine-inlet conditions corresponding to Reynolds number indices from 0.2 to 0.8 over a range of corrected engine speeds from 70 to 110 percent of rated speed. Engine operational limits up to an altitude of 75,000 feet together with ignition and windmilling characteristics were also obtained. Description: An investigation was conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel on a 1/23-scale model of the McDonnell F3H-1N airplane. The effects of control settings and movements upon the erect and inverted spin and recovery characteristics of the model were determined for the clean condition. Spin-recovery parachute tests were also performed. The results indicated that erect spins obtained on the airplane for the take-off or combat loadings should be satisfactorily terminated if full rudder reversal is accompanied by moving the ailerons to full with the spin (stick full right in a right spin). The spins obtained should be oscillatory in pitch, roll, and yaw. Recoveries from inverted spins should be satisfactory by full reversal of the rudder. A 16.7-foot- diameter tail parachute with a towline length of 30 feet and a drag coefficient of 0.734 should be adequate for emergency recovery from demonstration spins.

Description: The lift, pitching-moment, and drag characteristics of a missile configuration having a body of fineness ratio 9.33 and a cruciform triangular wing and tail of aspect ratio 4 were measured at a Mach number of 1.99 and a Reynolds number of 6.0 million, based on the body length. The tests were performed through an angle-of-attack range of -5 deg to 28 deg to investigate the effects on the aerodynamic characteristics of roll angle, wing-tail interdigitation, wing deflection, and interference among the components (body, wing, and tail). Theoretical lift and moment characteristics of the configuration and its components were calculated by the use of existing theoretical methods which have been modified for application to high angles of attack, and these characteristics are compared with experiment. The lift and drag characteristics of all combinations of the body, wing, and tail were independent of roll angle throughout the angle-of-attack range. The pitching-moment characteristics of the body-wing and body-wing- tail combinations, however, were influenced significantly by the roll angle at large angles of attack (greater than 10 deg). A roll from 0 deg (one pair of wing panels horizontal) to 45 deg caused a forward shift in the center of pressure which was of the same magnitude for both of these combinations, indicating that this shift originated from body-wing interference effects. A favorable lift - interference effect (lift of the combination greater than the sum of the lifts of the components) and a rearward shift in the center of pressure from a position corresponding to that for the components occurred at small angles of attack when the body was combined with either the exposed wing or tail surfaces. These lift and center-of-pressure interference effects were gradually reduced to zero as the angle of attack was increased to large values. The effect of wing-tail interference, which influenced primarily the pitching-moment characteristics, is dependent on the distance between the wing trailing vortex wake and the tail surfaces and thus was a function of angle of attack, angle of roll, and wing- tail interdigitation. Although the configuration at zero roll with the wing and tail in line exhibited the least center-of-pressure travel, the configuration with the wing and tail interdigitated had the least change in wing- tail interference over the angle - of-attack range. The lift effectiveness of the variable-incidence wing was reduced by more than 70 percent as a result of an increase in the combined angle of attack and wing incidence from 0 deg to 40 deg center dot The wing- tail interference (effective downwash at the tail) due to wing deflection was nearly zero as a result of a region of negative vorticity shed from the inboard portion of the wing. The lift characteristics of the configuration and its components were satisfactorily predicted by the calculated results, but the pitching moments at large angles of attack were not because of the influence of factors for which no adequate theory is available, such as the variation of the cross flow drag coefficient along the body and the effect of the wing downwash field on the after body loading.

Description: An investigation of a 1/14-scale dynamically similar model of a panto-base version of the Chase C-123 airplane was conducted to evaluate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the airplane. The resistance, longitudinal stability, and spray patterns during take-off and general behavior in calm- and rough-water landings were determined. Brief calm-water tests were made to compare the initial vertical impact accelerations of the model with and without hydro-skis. Take-off stability was satisfactory for calm-water operation. A ratio of gross load to maximum resistance of 3,6 was obtained. Heavy spray reached the propellers only during ski emergence. The landing behavior in calm water and in waves 3 feet by 150 feet (full scale) was satisfactory for a normal range of trim angles. Initial impacts in calmwater landings resulted in vertical accelerations of about 2 1/2 with the hydro-skis installed and about 4g with the hydro-skis removed,

Description: Additional results on the static longitudinal and lateral stability characteristics of a 0.05-scale model of the Convair F2Y-1 water-based fighter airplane were obtained in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel over a Mach number range of 0.50 to 0.92. The maximum angle-of-attack range (obtained at the lower Mach numbers) was from -2 degrees to 25 degrees. The sideslip-angle range investigated was from -4 degrees to 12 degrees. The investigation included effects of various arrangements of wing fences, leading-edge chord-extensions, and leading-edge notches. Various fuselage fences, spoilers, and a dive brake also were investigated. From overall considerations of lift, drag, and pitching moments, it appears that there were two modifications somewhat superior to any of the others investigated: One was a configuration that employed a full-chord fence and a partial-chord fence located at 0.63 semispan and 0.55 semispan, respectively. The second was a leading-edge chord-extension that extended from 0.68 semispan to 0.85 semispan in combination with a leading-edge notch located at 0.68 semispan. With plus or minus 10 degrees aileron, the estimated wing-tip helix angle was reduced from 0.125 at a Mach number of 0.50 to 0.088 at a Mach number of 0.92, with corresponding rates of roll of 4.0 and 5.2 radians per second. The upper aft fuselage dive brake, when deflected 30 degrees and 60 degrees, reduced the rudder effectiveness about 10 to 20 percent and about 35 to 50 percent, respectively.

Description: Free-flight tests in the transonic speed range utilizing rocketpropelled models have been made on three pairs of 0.11-scale North American F-100 airplane wings having an aspect ratio of 3.47, a taper ratio of 0.308, 45 degree sweepback at the quarter-chord line, and thickness ratios of 31 and 5 percent to investigate the possibility of flutte r. Data from tests of two other rocket-propelled models which accidentally fluttered during a drag investigation of the North American F-100 airplane are also presented. The first set of wings (5 percent thick) was tested on a model which was disturbed in pitch by a moving tail and reached a maximum Mach number of 0.85. The wings encountered mild oscillations near the first - bending frequency at high lift coefficients. The second set of wings 9 percent thick was tested up to a maximum Mach number of 0.95 at (2) angles of attack provided by small rocket motors installed in the nose of the model. No oscillations resembling flutter were encountered during the coasting flight between separation from the booster and sustainer firing (Mach numbers from 0.86 to 0.82) or during the sustainer firing at accelerations of about 8g up to the maximum Mach number of the test (0.95). The third set of wings was similar to the first set and was tested up to a maximum Mach number of 1.24. A mild flutter at frequencies near the first-bending frequency of the wings was encountered between a Mach number of 1.15 and a Mach number of 1.06 during both accelerating and coasting flight. The two drag models, which were 0.ll-scale models of the North American F-100 airplane configuration, reached a maximum Mach number of 1.77. The wings of these models had bending and torsional frequencies which were 40 and 89 percent, respectively, of the calculated scaled frequencies of the full-scale 7-percent-thick wing. Both models experienced flutter of the same type as that experienced-by the third set of wings.

Description: An investigation was made of the take-off characteristics of a 1/10-scale dynamic model of the Convair XF2Y-1 airplane. This airplane is a water-based, jet-propelled, delta-wing fighter incorporating a hydro-ski landing gear. Tests were made with the original configuration, with the beaching wheels removed, and with the wheels installed and fairings added in front of the wheels. Each configuration was tested at weight and balance conditions simulating 17,000 pounds gross weight with the moment due t o 7,600 pounds of thrust, 17,300 pounds gross weight with a 9,500-pound thrust condition, and 23,000 pounds gross weight with a 9,300-pound thrust condition. Constant-speed runs were made at various elevon settings and vertical ski-strut positions; and trim, rise, and resistance were measured. Accelerated runs were made with controlled elevons and scale shock struts which could be extended as desired, and the longitudinal stability and spray characteristics were observed and photographed.

Description: An investigation was conducted in the Langley 19-foot pressure tunnel on a 0.3-scale model of the Republic RF-84F airplane to determine modifications which would eliminate the pitch-up that occurred near maximum lift during flight tests of the airplane. The effects of high-lift and stall-control devices, horizontal tail locations, external stores, and various inlets on the longitudinal characteristics of the model were investigated. For the most part, these tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of 9.0 x 10(exp 6) and a Mach number of 0.19. The results indicated that from the standpoint of stability the inlets should possess blunted side bodies. The horizontal tail located at either the highest or lowest position investigated improved the stability of the model. Three configurations were found for the model equipped with the production tail which eliminated the pitch-up through the lift range up to the maximum lift and provided a stable static margin which did not vary more than 15% of the mean aerodynamic chord through the lift range up to 85% of maximum lift. The three configurations are as follows: the production wing-fuselage-tail combination with an inlet similar to the production inlet but smaller in plan form in conjunction with either (1) a wing fence located at 65% of the win semispan or (2) an 11.7% chord leading-edge extension extending from 65.8 to 95.8% of the wing semispan and (3) the production wing-fuselage-tail combination with the production inlet and an 11.7% chord leading-edge extension extending from 70.8 to 95.8% of the wing semispan.

Allyl)-2-mercapto-4-[d-arabo-tetraoxy-butyl]-imidazol entsteht.
