Summary The Shooting Law in vigour within the Federal Republic is based upon the so-called districtsystem; there are 2 kinds of hunting territories, the hunting district of owners and the common hunting district. For each of these 2 kinds minimum sizes are required, 75 resp. 150 ha. The shooting district is the unit of management. It is investigated if the size of the management unit corresponds to the biological circumstances of the kinds of deer at the disposal of the shooting enterprise. Considering only the most important biological factor, the size of the yearly district — i. e. of the area which is inhabited by 1 piece of one kind of deer in the course of 1 year —, it has to be stated that this yearly district covers a multiple of the minimum size of a shooting district. This proportion - one should say disproportion - is recognized by some legal measures (for instance the possibility of rounding up the shooting district, shooting according to shooting plan); but these are insufficient. Especially considering the restriction of movement of free living animals because of the increase of human population, the intensification of agriculture and traffic, other measures (i. e. such of shooting management) ought to be taken.
