Notes: Abstract Entrainment of sediment particles from channel beds into the channel flow is influenced by the characteristics of the flow turbulence which produces stochastic shear stress fluctuations at the bed. Recent studies of the structure of turbulent flow has recognized the importance of bursting processes as important mechanisms for the transfer of momentum into the laminar boundary layer. Of these processes, the sweep event has been recognized as the most important bursting event for entrainment of sediment particles as it imposes forces in the direction of the flow resulting in movement of particles by rolling, sliding and occasionally saltating. Similarly, the ejection event has been recognized as important for sediment transport since these events maintain the sediment particles in suspension. In this study, the characteristics of bursting processes and, in particular, the sweep event were investigated in a flume with a rough bed. The instantaneous velocity fluctuations of the flow were measured in two-dimensions using a small electromagnetic velocity meter and the turbulent shear stresses were determined from these velocity fluctuations. It was found that the shear stress applied to the sediment particles on the bed resulting from sweep events depends on the magnitude of the turbulent shear stress and its probability distribution. A statistical analysis of the experimental data was undertaken and it was found necessary to apply a Box-Cox transformation to transform the data into a normally distributed sample. This enabled determination of the mean shear stress, angle of action and standard error of estimate for sweep and ejection events. These instantaneous shear stresses were found to be greater than the mean flow shear stress and for the sweep event to be approximately 40 percent greater near the channel bed. Results from this analysis suggest that the critical shear stress determined from Shield's diagram is not sufficient to predict the initiation of motion due to its use of the temporal mean shear stress. It is suggested that initiation of particle motion, but not continuous motion, can occur earlier than suggested by Shield's diagram due to the higher shear stresses imposed on the particles by the stochastic shear stresses resulting from turbulence within the flow.

Notes: Abstract The structure changes in the start-up flow of the thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer Vectra 8950 are probed by performing transient experiments after various flow histories. The shear and normal stress growth curves of a squeezed sample and of a randomly oriented sample show a pronounced overshoot at low strains, whereas the stress growth curve of a sample pre-sheared until steady state shows a gradual increase. This first peak is associated with the re-orientation of the director into the shearing plane. All stress transients show a second broad maximum at large strains that results from the generation of a steady defect network. The effect of varying the relaxation period after pre-shearing is reflected in the appearance of two peaks in the subsequent stress growth curves. One of these peaks shifts linearly with re laxation period and the other is more or less fixed in position. The orientation of the molecules during steady shear flow is on average in the flow direction. Intermediate orientation levels may exist in the transient depending on the amount of strain. The material is able to maintain the flow-induced orientation distribution for a long time after cessation of flow. This is reflected in a similar fashion in the initial magnitudes of the stresses and the dynamic moduli after various preshear strains. Moreover, the dynamic moduli decrease with time after cessation of steady shear flow, indicating that the orientation increases during relaxation.

Notes: Abstract Microstructural parameters such as coherent domain size, microstrain, dislocation density and texture of electrolytically plated Ni–Mn–S layers were investigated by X-ray analysis. Structural parameters, layer composition and the macroproperties are discussed and explained. With the help of a statistical regression analysis the correlation coefficient r2 and its relationship with the investigated parameters is determined. It is shown that the microstructural parameters play an important role in determining the macroscopic properties. The manganese concentration is shown to influence the structural parameters, but no influence of sulphur is found. It seems that a relationship of the structural parameters with the macroscopic properties is valid in general and is not a special case. There structural correlations can be used in general for processing electrolytic deposits for required applications.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of a highly hydrated tristrontium phosphate, nonastrontium hexakis(phosphate) hexadecahydrate, Sr9(PO4)6·16H2O, has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals are monoclinic,a=15.203(2),b=6.488(1),c=18.984(7) Å, β=98.42(2)o, space groupP2/c (No. 13),Z=2,V=1852.3 Å3,d c =2.951 Mg·m−3. The structure was refined by full-matrix least-squares techniques toR=0.038,R w =0.051, for 2329 reflections with I≥3σ(I). The structure can be described in terms of a layer-type arrangement parallel to (100). One layer consists of a compact assembly of columns of Sr and PO4 ions in a pseudohexagonal arrangement resembling an apatitic structure. A second layer containing all the water molecules and one PO4 ion that occupies the interstitial space may be referred to as the hydrated layer. The structure has an overall similarity to that of octacalcium phosphate and can be considered as a model for amorphous calcium phosphate.

Notes: Abstract The X-ray crystallographic structure of tricyclohexylmethyl chloride, a precursor of the tricyclohexylmethyl radical, has been determined. Colourless tablets of C19H33Cl crystallized from hexane/chloroform in the orthorhombic space group Pnma, with cell dimensions a=10.725(3),b=15.670(3),c=10.168(3) Å;V=1708.8(1.3) Å3;Z=4. 1586 reflections withI〉3 σ(I), and 302 with zero intensity, on refinement gaveR=0.046,R w=0.076. The three cyclohexyl rings are arranged to give the molecule a plane of symmetry containing the central C−H axis. The large volume per nonhydrogen atom, of about 21.3 Å3, is close to values found in the crystal structures of analogous tricyclohexyl compounds.

Notes: Abstract The structural determination by X-ray crystallography of the titled N-arylamine 4a, as well as AM1 calculations on a series of derivatives (4b–c, 5a–c), are reported. The compound 4a is monoclinic P21/c with a = 7.656(3), b = 23.655(5), c = 7.686(9) Å, β = 112.59(6)°, V = 1285.2(2) Å3 and Z = 4. This structure has been used as a template for the building of some others derivatives used for AM1 calculations. The results show that the cyclization position on the aromatic rings, which can lead to two regioisomers, depends on the nature of the benzylic substituants.

Notes: Abstract We have determined an X-ray crystal structure, a = 12.482(1), b = 14.349(1), c = 14.342(1) Å, orthorhombic, P212121 for a molecular complex of brucine with pantolactone. The crystal structure is composed of corrugated sheets of brucine molecules containing the guest pantolactone molecules. The conformational twist of the pyrrolidine ring in brucine may probably be important in projecting the amine N2 to provide a strong and specific binding site for a chiral complexation. The pseudo-equatorial orientation of the hydroxyl group of the pantolactone anchors itself for binding via hydrogen bonding. In the crystal packing, the pantolactone molecules form helices and the brucine molecules are attached to these helices by O=H···N hydrogen bonds.

Crystals of FOCDMPO and NTMPO belong to the monoclinic space groups P21/n and C2/c, respectively. FOCDMPO: a = 9.147(2), b = 14.586(3), c = 13.665(5) Å and β = 101.68(2)° NTMPO: a = 38.52(2), b = 13.727(5), c = 9.564(3) Å and β = 98.60(1)°. In both the structures, the piperidine ring adopts a boat conformation with slight distortion. In FOCDMPO, one of the phenyl and methyl groups are in axial positions while the other phenyl and methyl groups are in equatorial orientations. In NTMPO, the situation is reversed. The molecules are stabilized by weak intermolecular C—H ··· O interactions in addition to van der Waals forces.

Notes: Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of nitroguanidine was refined using X-ray single-crystal diffraction methods. Previous structure determinations achieved with single crystal photographic or neutron powder techniques yielded values for the C—N ‘formal’ double bond-length that either equaled or exceeded the ‘formal’ C—N single-bond lengths. Bond lengths were more precisely and accurately determined here than in the previous studies, but the ‘formal’ double-bond length still exceeds the ‘formal’ single bond lengths. Comparisons of crystal bond lengths with ab initio derived bond lengths of an isolated nitroguanidine molecule and hydrogen-bonded clusters of nitroguanidine molecules suggest that observed bond-length abnormalities are caused by intermolecular forces in the crystal. The crystal is orthorhombic, with a = 17.6390(5), b = 24.8730(7), c = 3.5903(1) Å, V = 1575.19 Å3, Z = 16, and D calc = 1.736 g cm−3.

Notes: Abstract Mono-, di-, tri-, and tetra-nuclear cobalt (iron) complexes containing co-ligands phosphine and thiolate are presented according to the classification by combination of different dentates of the two ligands. Emphasis is being put on the triand tetranuclear cluster complexes of monodentate phosphines and 1,2-bidentate thiolates. These complexes are considered to be constructed based on the general structural fragment (or building block) ML 2L′ (L=1,2-bidentate thiolate,L′=tertiary phosphine). Structural regularities are presented in Tables I, III, IV, and V and discussed. FAB mass spectroscopic data showed the possible fragmentation patterns. Synergism of the cluster skeletons is proposed to explain the occurrence of the distinct structural modes.

Notes: Abstract ZnNi alloys were electrodeposited from a chloride bath on steel substrates. The effect of nickel bath concentration on chemical composition, structure and microstructure of the deposits is demonstrated. From 0 to 13 nickel, the phases obtained do not correspond to that reported on the thermodynamic phase diagram. It is shown that the substitution of zinc by nickel is responsible for the formation of distorted ηd and γd phases corresponding to the supersaturated hexagonal η phase of zinc and to the unsaturated cubic γ phase of Zn–Ni alloy, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry indicates that the thermal instability of the alloys containing up to 13 wt of nickel, results from the crystallization of the δ phase from the ηd and γd phases at around 200 °C and 250 °C, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Addition of zincate to the leach liquor for the preparation of skeletal copper increases the copper surface area; however it does not stabilize the structure against rearrangement. The leaching kinetics have been studied using a rotating disc electrode (RDE) at 269–293 K in 2–8 M NaOH and 0.0005–0.1 M Na2ZnO2. Zincate ions precipitate as zinc oxide, due to the local consumption of hydroxide ions near the leach front as the aluminium dissolves. This oxide hinders the aluminium dissolution, slowing the leaching rate. It also hinders copper dissolution/redeposition and prevents copper diffusion, thus reducing the structural rearrangement significantly, and causing the formation of a much finer copper structure with increased surface area. The zinc oxide redissolves as the leach front passes, releasing the copper to rearrange once more, thereby allowing the surface area to decrease with time. The activation energy for leaching was found to be 84 ± 6 kJ mol−1.

Notes: Abstract The addition of chromate to the leach liquor for the preparation of skeletal copper increases and stabilizes the copper surface area and slows the leaching rate. The kinetics have been studied using a rotating disc electrode (RDE) at 269–293 K in 2–8 M NaOH and 0–0.1 M Na2CrO4. The rate of leaching was found to be constant with time, with an activation energy of 74 ± 7 kJ mol−1. By monitoring the kinetics and free (mixed) corrosion potential, it was possible to elucidate the mechanistic effect of chromate causing the increased surface area. Chromate was found to deposit on the copper surface as chromium(III) oxide, hindering the leaching reaction as well as the dissolution/redeposition of copper, the main mechanism of structural formation/rearrangement for skeletal copper. This blocking of the surface resulted in a finer structure, with a corresponding larger surface area. It also stabilised the surface area by minimizing the rearrangement. The effect of chromate was found to reach a limit at around 0.03 M Na2CrO4.

Notes: Abstract The durability of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) composite cathodes of lanthanum strontium manganite and yttria stabilised zirconia was investigated. The cathodes were kept at constant, realistic operating conditions (−300 mA cm−2 at 1000 °C in air) for up to 2000 h. After the 2000 h test the increase in electrode overvoltage exceeded 100% of the initial value. Nominally identical cathodes kept for 2000 h at 1000 °C in air without current load for comparison showed little or no degradation. Thus, the current load of −300 mA cm−2, rather than the operation temperature of 1000 °C, was responsible for the degradation. Structural analysis showed an increase in the porosity at the electrode interfaces, when the electrode had been polarised. No such structural changes were found for electrodes tested without current load. The degradation is primarily ascribed to pore formation in the electrode material induced by an electric field.

Results of the crystal structure analysis of the racemic (±) nonamethoxy[1,1,1]orthocyclophane trimer, C30H36O9, are described. The structure was determined by X-ray diffraction at 293 K and shown to belong to the triclinic space group P $$\bar 1$$ . The compound possesses a distorted crown conformation with unusual C−H...O intermolecular interactions, and with a crystal packing not observed before in other related derivatives. The racemic mixture was also discriminated in its two enantiomeric isomers, using proton NMR and Eu(III) as a chiral shift reagent.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of strontium potassium arsenate octahydrate, SrKAsO4·8H2O, has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals are tetragonal, a = 7.144(1), c = 23.613(2) Å, space group I41md (No. 109), Z = 4, V = 1205.1(1) Å3, and d c = 2.258 g cm−3. All cations and anions in this compound are completely surrounded by water molecules. Sr2+ and K+ ions are each coordinated to eight water molecules arranged in an approximately square antiprism. The [Sr(H2O)8]2+ polyhedron shares one face of four water molecules with a [K(H2O)8]+ polyhedron forming O4-Sr-O4-K-O4 polyhedra. The O4-Sr-O4-K-O4 units are linked together through a pair of edge-sharing linkages of the outer water molecules, alternating along the a-axis and b-axis. The hydrated cation polyhedra appear to define the host lattice, which accommodates the AsO 4 3- ion in the interstitial space. The environment of the AsO 4 3- ion consists of 16 water molecules; each oxygen atom is the acceptor in hydrogen bonds from four water molecules. The pair distances associated with this environment may be used in investigations of the structure of hydrated 4 n- ions in solutions. Each water molecule is coordinated to one Sr and one K, and hydrogen bonded to two O atoms of two different AsO 4 3- ions. There is no hydrogen bonding between water molecules.

Notes: Abstract The crystal and molecular structures of two methoxybenzo [b] thiophenes have been determined by three-dimensional, single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. Both 3-(3′,4′,5′-trimethoxybenzoyl)-2-(4′-methoxyphenyl)-6-methoxybenzo[b]thiophene and 3-(3′,4′,5′-triethoxybenzoyl)-2-(4′-methoxyphenyl)-6-methoxybenzo[b]thiophene (hereafter referred to as I and II, respectively) crystallize in the triclinic centrosymmetric space group $$P \bar 1$$ (No. 2, C1) with two formula units per cell with a = 6.842(1) Å, b = 12.602(2) Å, c = 13.815(2) Å, α = 94.80(1)°, β = 98.27(2)°, and γ = 100.59(2)° and a = 10.600(1), b = 11.415(2), c = 12.137(2) Å, α = 94.57(1)°, β = 101.18(1)°, and γ = 110.45(1)°, respectively. The phase problems were solved by direct methods and the respective final full-matrix least-squares refinements converged to R = 0.039 and 0.068. The structures differ in the orientation of the trimethoxy and triethoxy groups of the benzoyl ligands. The molecules in the crystal lattice are held together by van der Waals forces. Selected bond distances, angles, and torsion angles are tabularized as well as reference to the synthesis of the title compounds and peripheral studies.

Notes: Abstract A new Er(III)–Na(I) coordination polymer of stoichiometry [NaEr2L5(H2O)6(NO3)](NO3)·3.5H2O (HL = picolinic acid N-oxide) has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Crystals are triclinic, PĪ with a = 9.823(2), b = 12.453(2), c = 20.643(4) Å; α = 98.49(3), (β = 101.40(3), γ = 108.69(3)°; V = 2284(1) Å3; Z = 2. Of the two independent eight-coordinate erbium(III) ions in this complex, one is surrounded by four bidentate chelating L ligands, and the other by one bidentate chelating L ligand, four aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two neighboring [ErL4] units. The sodium(I) ion is in a distorted octahedral environment, being coordinated by a unidentate nitrate anion, three aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two adjacent [ErL4] units. The complex is built from zigzag chains of syn-anti carboxylate-bridged erbium(III) moieties directed in the a direction, which are cross-linked pairwise by aqua-bridgeddimericsodium(I) units. The resulting composite polymeric chains are further connected by hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional network.

Notes: Abstract In this work, we determine the crystal structure of dimethoxo(meso-tetra(4-methoxyphenylporphyrinato))tin(IV), Sn(tmpp)(OMe)2 (1). Experimental results indicate that the tin atom has an octahedral geometry. The geometry around the tin center has Sn(1)–O(5) = 2.020(6), Sn(1)–O(6) = 2.003(7) Å and an average Sn(1)–N = 2.10(1) Å. The two methoxo groups are unidentately coordinated to the tin(IV) atom. Two-stage hydrolysis of Sn(tmpp)(OMe)2 in CDCl3 was observed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Compound (1) crystallizes in the space group P21/n with a = 14.7492(1), b = 19.2022(3), c = 16.0806(2) Å, β = 94.104(1)°, and Z = 4.

Notes: Abstract A novel polymeric Gd2Cu3 complex of iminodiacetic acid (H2L1=NH{CH2COOH}2), namely, Gd2Cu3(L1)6, 1, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. In the title complex, the Gd3+ ion is nine-coordinated by six O atoms from three bidentate chelating carboxylate groups and three O atoms from three anti-anti bridging carboxylic groups of six L1 ligands; the Cu2+ ion is six-coordinated by four O and two N atoms from two chelating L1 ligands. Each pair of Gd(III) atoms is bridged by three L1 ligands, each of which also chelates with one copper(II) ion, thus forming a Gd2Cu3 cluster unit. Such cluster units are cross-linked by flexible L1 ligands into a three-dimensional coordination framework. The title complex crystallizes in the trigonal space group P-3c1 (No. 165) with a = b = 13.433(4), c = 14.770(6) Å; V = 2308(1) Å3; Dcalca = 1.859 g cm−3; Z = 2.

Notes: Abstract The title compound [Ni(batt)2]·4H2O, in which Hbatt is 1,3-bis[3-(5-amino-1,2,4-triazolyl)]triazene, has been prepared and its crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The compound crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4/m (a = 10.5645(8) Å, c = 9.1336(6) Å, and Z = 2). The Ni(batt)2 molecule has local 4¯ symmetry, but it is located on a crystallographic 4/m site and is disordered over the mirror plane. The ligand batt− is tridentate with nitro-type coordination of the triazenido group and N4 coordination of the two outer triazolyl substituents. The complex has a distorted octahedral geometry with meridional configuration of the two nearly planar batt− ligands. The geometry of the tridentate cavity is examined and a comparison is made with the Ni-terpyridyl system, which shows similar coordination around the nickel center. The FTIR, micro-Raman, and UV-vis spectra are analyzed in relation with the structure.

Notes: Abstract The reaction of a 1:10 molar ratio between indium chloride and tetra-n-butylammonium thiocyanate in ethanol affords the complex [(n-C4H9)4N]3[In(NCS)6] (1), the structure of which has been established by X-ray diffraction. This compound crystallizes in the cubic space group Pa3¯ with eight formula units in the unit cell. The formula unit consists of three separate cationic tetra-n-butylammonium groups and an independent hexakisisothiocyanatoindium anionic group. The six near linear thiocyanate ligands coordinate octahedrally through the nitrogen atom to the indium metal center. The coordination of the n-butyl groups to the ammonium-nitrogen atom is tetrahedral. The complex has also been characterized by IR, 1H and 13C NMR, physical properties, and X-ray powder analysis.

Notes: Abstract A novel Mg6 cluster molecule with the formula of Mg6(μ 3-OH)2(μ 3-Br)2(μ-Br)8(THF)8 (1) has been isolated in 38% yield from a reaction of the Grignard reagent, 2-naphthyl-Mg-Br with BBr3 in THF. The structure of 1, determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, contains two Mg3 triangles linked together by two bridging bromide ligands. Within each Mg3 triangle, one hydroxide and one bromide ligand function as triply bridging ligands capping both sides of the Mg3 triangle. The coordination geometry around each Mg(II) ion is approximately octahedral. NMR studies revealed that compound 1 is highly fluxional in solution.

Notes: Abstract Raney® copper is an active hydrogenation catalyst formed by the selective dissolution of aluminium from a Cu–Al alloy. The structure of Raney® copper is presented in a series of images taken using a focussed ion beam miller (FIB). The images show a structure consisting of a uniform three-dimensional network of fine copper ligaments. A rotating disc electrode, used to control the diffusion layer, enabled a study of the kinetics of the leaching reaction at 269–303 K in 2–8 m NaOH. Under these conditions, the reaction rate was constant and independent of hydroxide concentration. The activation energy for leaching was determined as 69±7 kJ mol−1. The mixed corrosion potential of the dissolving alloy has been related to the exposed copper surface area, which in turn is dependent on the leaching rate and the mechanism of rearrangement. The overall mechanism of formation/rearrangement of the Raney® copper structure was found to be mainly dissolution/redeposition of copper atoms, with surface or volume diffusion, or possibly both, playing a minor role.

Notes: Abstract The title compound C13H13NO3S2 crystallizes in the triclinic space group $$P\bar 1$$ (Z=2) with lattice constantsa=8.382(2),b=10.042(2),c=10.134(2) Å, α=119.35(1)°, β=101.40(1)° and γ=90.54(1)°. The interplanar angle between the least squares planes of the 1,3-oxazoline ring and the phenyl ring amounts to 90.2°, thus hindering conjugation between the benzene and heterocyclic system. The observed bond parameters of the five-membered heterocycle suggest a significant contribution from a zwitterionic dipolar limiting structure [38.7(5)%] to the description of this ring system. The particular contributions of the resonance structures were estimated by calculations using the HOSE model on the base of the observed bond lengths.

Notes: Abstract The title complex was obtained by anion metathesis from [Tb(CH3COO)2(C22H26N6)] (CH3COO)·4H2O and K2CrO4 in aqueous solution. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group $$P\bar 1$$ witha=8.384(2),b=10.425(2)c=15.752(2)Å, α=98.82(2), β=93.52(2), γ=97.22(2)°, andZ=2. The structure is ionic and consists of a (+1) complex cation balanced in a 2∶1 ratio by a disordered dichromate ion. The 9-coordinate Tb(III) is linked to the six nitrogen atoms of the macrocyclic ligand L=C22H26N6, as well as to a water molecule and a bidentate chelating chromate situated on opposite sides of the macrocycle. The infrared spectrum shows, in addition to the pattern of the macrocyclic ligand, the absorptions arising from the stretching modes of the bidentate chelating CrO4 2− ligand and of the Cr2O7 2− counterion.

The phase problems were solved by direct methods and the respective final full-matrix least-squares refinements converged toR=0.046 and 0.031. The structures differ in the positioning of the dimethoxy groups of the benzoyl ligands and the addition of a hydroxyl group inI. The molecules in the crystal lattice are held together by van der Waals forces plus the addition of hydrogen bonding in compoundI. Selected bond distances and angles and torsion angles are tabularized.

    Notes: Abstract Two hydrated salts of 1,8-disulfonato-3,4,5,6-acridinetetracarboxylic acid, H2L, have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Compound 1, Na2L·9 $$ - \frac{1}{2}$$ H2O, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 42.005(1), b = 6.838(1), c = 23.807 (1) Å, β = 122.71 (1)°, and Z = 8. Compound 2, (paraquat)L·2H2O, belongs to the triclinic space group $${P\bar 1}$$ with a = 9.940(1), b = 11.543(1), c = 14.033(1) Å, α = 105.45(1), β = 95.82(1), γ = 100.14(1)° and and Z = 2. All four carboxyl groups in the 3,4,5,6-tetracarboxyacridine-1,8-disulfonate dianion L2− are un-ionized. In 1 the distorted octahedrally coordinated sodium cations, the anions, and the lattice water molecules are joined together by hydrogen bonds to generate a three-dimensional network. In the crystal structure of 2, a host framework composed of L2− ions and water molecules accommodate the paraquat dications within two channel systems running parallel to the a and b axes.

Notes: Abstract A new complex, [Sm(DMF)4(H2O)4Fe(CN)6]·H2O (DMF = N, N-dimethylformamide), has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray single crystal structure and thermogravimetric analyses. The complex crystallizes in the P21/n space group, with lattice parameters a = 17.583(4) Å, b = 8.870(2) Å, c = 19.845(6) Å, β = 95.98(3)°, V = 3078(1) Å3, D x = 1.679 Mg m−3, D m = 1.65(1) Mg m−3, Z = 4. The molecular structure shows that a cyano-bridged bimetallic structure is obtained. The Sm atom is coordinated by eight oxygen atoms of four water molecules and four DMF molecules and one nitrogen atom of the bridging cyanide ligand. The iron atom assumes approximately an octahedral environment surrounded by six CN ligands. The hydrate water molecule is hydrogen-bonded to one of the O atoms bound to Sm. Each terminal CN ligand of the Fe(CN) 6 3− entity is hydrogen-bonded to some O atoms of water molecules. An infrared spectrum is also reported.

The complexes are packed in a layer structure with numerous intermolecular H-bond connections. Raman spectra have been recorded for various excitation wavelengths along the contour of the intense triazenido π-π* absorption band at 465 nm and resonance profiles measured for the most important Raman bands. A comparison is made with the analog [Cu(batt)Cl] complex. Structural and spectral differences between the two molecules are emphasized and related to differences in metal-ligand bonding.

Notes: Abstract In aqueous hydrobromic medium, Na[AuCl4] reacts with 1,3-dimethyllumazine (1,3-dimethyl-pteridine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione, DLM) or 1,3,6,7-tetramethyllumazine (DLMD) to give three adducts with simplified formulas Na[AuBr4](DLMD), Na[AuBr4](DLM), and Na[AuBr4](DLM)2. These compounds have been characterized by means of analytical techniques, and IR and NMR spectroscopies. Single-crystal x-ray diffraction studies have been made on the Na[AuBr4](DLM)2 compound. The crystals belong to the orthorhombic Pbca space group, with a = 15.249(1), b = 15.238(2), c = 21.563(2) Å, Z = 8, and R = 0.053. The structure consists of planar [AuBr4]− anions and Na+ cations weakly linked to two crystallographically independent DLM molecules. The Na+ cation interacts weakly with four oxygen and one nitrogen atoms from four different pteridine molecules, its environment may be described as a very distorted square pyramid.

    Notes: Abstract Structures of two binuclear copper(II) complexes with sulfato bridges and tridentate 2-acetylpyridine 3-azacyclothiosemicarbazone ligands have been solved. The complexμ-sulfato-bis{(2-acetylpyridine 3-hexamethyleneiminyl-thiosemicarbazonato)copper(II)} N,N-dimethylformamide, [Cu(Achexim)]2SO4·DMF, has the following structural properties: triclinic, P1¯(#2), a = 12.314(4), b = 15.885(4), c = 10.959(4) Å, α = 103.25(2), β = 103.60(2), γ = 109.94(2)°, V = 1843(2) Å3, and Z = 2; for μ-sulfato-bis{(2-acetylpyridine 3-piperidylthiosemicarbazonato)copper(II)}chloroform, [Cu(Acpip)]2SO4·CHCl3: triclinic, P1¯(#2), a = 11.657(1), b = 17.101(2), c = 10.338(1) Å, α = 98.51(1), β = 109.294(7), γ = 107.016(9)°, V = 1790.3(4) Å3, and Z = 2. The size of the azacyclo ring significantly affects the stereochemistry of these binuclear complexes.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis and crystal structure of a novel hydrate of lithium cyclohexaphosphate are reported. Li6P6O18·10H2O crystallizes in the space group C2/c with a = 15.113(5), b = 12.006(2), c = 15.892(2) Å, β = 122.85(2)°, and Z = 4. The structure consists of P6O18 ring layers stacked along the c direction in between which are located the lithiumions and water molecules. Two LiO4 tetrahedra share common edges with LiO5 pseudosquare pyramids to form two independant Li3O9 units. About 50% of the water molecules have fractional occupancy rates and form fragments of molecules. A linear relationship is established between the relative cell volume V/Z and the hydration degree, n, for all the known hydrates: Li6P6O18·nH2O.

Notes: Abstract The structures of two thiosemicarbazones are described: syn,E-1-cyclopentano-4-ethyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (1) and syn,E-1-cyclopentano-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (2). Crystal data: for 1: tetragonal, P43 (#78), a = b = 8.922(7) Å, c = 12.899(13) Å, and Z = 4; for 2: monoclinic a = 15.163(18) Å, b = 7.482(5) Å, c = 12.467(15) Å, β = 119.04(7)°, and Z = 4. In 1, molecules are linked by hydrogen-bonding into infinite chains with non-planar 9-ring subunits in which thioamides interact with the H—N—C—N—N groups of neighbors. Thioamide groups in 2 form dimers linked by N—B···HS hydrogen-bonds with a planar 8-ring as in solid state structures of carboxylic acids. The semicarbazide syn conformation fosters formation of N—H···N intramolecular hydrogen-bonding in each structure. The solid state structures are consistent with their infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of bis-(6-amino-5-formyl-1,3-dimethyluracilato benzoylhydrazone)cobalt(II) dimethylformamide solvate is described. This compound crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P1¯, Z = 2 with a = 9.7368(8), b = 12.346(1), c = 17.184(1) Å, α = 78.372(6), β = 74.585(6), γ = 71.113(5)°, and V = 1869.0(3) Å3. The coordination polyhedron around the metal ion displays a slightly flattened M(NNO)2 octahedral shape. Both ligands bind in a trident fashion through the benzoylic oxygen atom, the hydrazone nitrogen atom closer to the uracil ring, and the deprotonated nitrogen atom of the amino group. The two ligands exhibit quite different conformations: one of them is almost planar, whereas the other is severely twisted.

    Notes: Abstract A new pyridine containing compound, 4,4′-bis(4-pyridylethyl)biphenyl 1, was synthesized and its structure was determined by X-ray crystallography. Two kinds of two-dimensional networks linked by hydrogen bonds were obtained with different crystal solvents: 1·2H2O, monoclinic, space group P21/n with a = 8.3280(10), b = 5.5990(10), c = 24.054(4) Å, β = 98.79(2)°, V = 1108.4(3) Å3, Z = 2, Dc = 1.200 g cm−3, R1 = 0.0558; 1·CH3OH·2H2O, triclinic, space group P-1 with a = 8.3310(10), b = 12.861(2), c = 13.111(2) Å, α = 64.110(10), β = 75.000(10), γ = 83.750(10)°, V = 1220.7(3) Å3, Z = 2, Dc = 1.177 g cm−3, R1 = 0.0529. It is interesting that in the hydrate the host molecule of 1 contains an essentially flat biphenyl section, while in the methanol complex the host molecule of 1 contains a substantial twist in the center of the biphenyl section. The compounds were also characterized by NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. The 1H and 13C NMR assignments for 1 were carried out by 2D NMR spectral measurements in acetonitrile-d 3.

Notes: Abstract The complexes [(OC)4Os(PbMe2)]2 (3) and [(OC)4OsSnBu 2 ′ ]2 (4) have been prepared from be reaction of Na2[Os(CO)4] with Me2PbCl2 and Bu 2 ′ SnCl2, respectively, in THF and their X-ray crystal structures determined. The red derivative,3, was light-sensitive in solution. The reactions or [(OC)4 Os(SnMe2)]2 (2), or its decarbonylated derivative [Os3(CO)7(SnMe2)2]2 (7), with olefins or phosphorus donor ligands have also been investigated, and the structures of two derivatives, viz. [Os2(CO)7(SnMe2)2(C2H4)] (5a) and [Os2(CO)7(SnMe2)2(PMe3)] (6a), have been determined; the noncarbonyl ligand occupies an equatorial site in each case. The X-ray crystal structures of all these compounds, like those of [(OC)4Os(EMe2)]2 (E=Ge (1), Sn (2)) which have been reported previously, show leaning of the axial carbonyl ligands toward the metal tetracycle, i.e., an “umbrella” effect. Notes: Abstract Addition of a THF solution prepared by stirring [CpRu(CO)2]2 over Na/Hg amalgam to a solution of the triplatinum cluster [Pt3(dppm)3(CO)][PF6]2 (1) in THF gives the heteronuclear cluster [Pt3(dppm)3{(μ4-Hg)–RuCp(CO)2}2] [PF6]2 (2) in 40% yield following chromatography. A single crystal X-ray study of 2 reveals structural parameters for the Pt3Hg2 molecular core that are consistent with those of other structurally characterized complexes of this type. 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectra of this complex indicate that the structure observed in the solid state is retained in solution.

Notes: Abstract Poly(1,2-phenylenedithiocarbamate) (PPDTC) was prepared by the reaction of 2-aminothiophenol with carbon disulfide followed by condensation through the removal of H2S gas. PPDTC was used as a ligand to prepare four poly(1,2-phenylenedithiocarbamate)–metal complexes of iron(II), cobalt(II), copper(II), and lead(II), by refluxing with the metal salts. The polymer and its metal complexes were investigated by elemental analyses, UV–visible and IR spectroscopy, inherent viscosity, and magnetic susceptibility. The DC electrical conductivity variation with the temperature in the range 298–498 K of PPDTC and its polymeric copper complex was measured. Both polymer and polymer metal complexes showed an increase in electrical conductivity with an increase in temperature: typical semiconductor behavior. The proposed structure of the complexes is (MLX2·mH2O) n .

The structure is composed of a one-dimensional zigzag chain of $$\left\{ {[{\text{CuL}}][{\text{Fe(CN)}}_{\text{6}} ]} \right\}_2^{2 - } $$ units, and [CuL(H2O)2]2+ units. The one-dimensional zigzag chain extents through $${\text{Cu}}{\kern 1pt} - {\kern 1pt} {\text{CN}} - {\kern 1pt} {\text{Fe}}{\kern 1pt} - {\kern 1pt} {\text{CN}} - {\kern 1pt} {\text{Cu}}$$ linkages. The adjacent two polymer chains are linked by the $${\text{O}}{\kern 1pt} - {\kern 1pt} {\text{H}}{\kern 1pt} \cdot \cdot \cdot {\kern 1pt} {\text{N}}{\kern 1pt} \equiv {\kern 1pt} {\text{C}}{\kern 1pt} - $$ hydrogen bonding between [CuL(H2O)2]2+ and [Fe(CN)6]3−, forming a 3D supramolecular structure with inner hydrophilic channels. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show no exchange interaction between the Cu(II) and Fe(III) ions due to the longer $${\text{Cu}}{\kern 1pt} - {\kern 1pt} {\text{N}}$$ (axial) bond length.

Notes: Abstract Clinical isolates of Yersinia enterocolitca, which belong to mouse-lethal serotypes, produce the siderophore yersiniophore. Siderophore production was shown to be iron regulated and to reach maximum production in late log phase. Yersiniophore is a fluorescent siderophore with maximum excitation at 270 nm and a major emission peak at 428 nm. Absorption maxima were seen at 210 and 250 nm with a low broad peak from 280 to 320 nm. Purification of unchelated yersiniophore for structural analysis was made difficult by low yields (1–2 mg mg-1), and susceptibility to acid hydrolysis, oxidation and possibly polymerization. Yersinophore was therefore purified as an Al3+ chelate, which was found to be stable in solution for several weeks. To purify Al3+-yersiniophore, unchelated yersiniophore was first extracted from culture supernatants with dichloromethane, concentrated by rotary evaporation and adsorbed to a DEAE-sephacel column. Al3+-yersiniophore was eluted with 0.01 m AlCl3 and further purified by HPLC. The structure was established by a combination of elemental analysis, high resolution mass spectrometry and two-dimensional NMR experiments. Yersiniophore is a phenolate-thiazole siderophore with the formula C21H24N3O4S3Al and a molecular weight of 505.07404 when chelated to Al3+. The structure of yersiniophore was determined to be closely related to the structures of pyochelin, produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and anguibactin, produced by Vibrio anguillarum.

Notes: Abstract Molecular dynamics simulations of single Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in water have been carried out. Different ion-water potentials from the literature have been used, whereas the same water potential, a rigid simple point charged model, has been considered in all the simulations. Structural, thermodynamic, and dynamic properties have been calculated, and the results for different potentials have been compared with available experimental data. The study includes ion–water radial distribution functions, coordination numbers, solution enthalpies, hydration free energies, self-diffusion coefficients, and reorientational times of water molecules in the hydration shells.

Notes: Abstract Raman spectroscopic measurements on aqueous solutions of poly(dG) · poly(dC)indicate that the conformation of the polynucleotides in this double helicalcomplex are distributed between the A and B types at room temperature, the Aform being predominant at −15°C and decreasing progressively upon raising thetemperature to 65°C. A reversible pretransition has been found in this complexnear 70°C. Modifications in the spectra at this temperature indicate no majorconformational changes, but rather suggest altered base pairing and hydration ofthe carbonyl groups, accompanied by a slight distortion of the double helix, resulting in a slightly reduced stacking of the cytosine bases. Measurements inself-pressurized solutions of the complex at high temperature show that it meltsat 103°C in 0.1M NaCl solution (107°C in 0.5M NaCl). These values are somewhatlower than those we have determined in the same manner for the complexpoly(dG-dC) · poly(dG-dC): 117°C in 0.1M MgCl2 and 113°C or higher in 0.1MNaCl solution.
