    Beschreibung: The geoid for Costa Rica GCR-RSH-2020 (Geoide-Costarricense-Regional Calculado con el Método de Stokes-Helmert) is a 1 arc minute grid computed from terrestrial, marine and satellite gravity data. It is remarkable the comprehensive data cleaning and the use of new terrestrial gravity values which were not included in any other geoid determinations. The GECO global geopotential model was used for the data gap filling. The GCR-RSH-2020 computation was based on the Stokes-Helmert approach developed by the University of New Brunswick, using GOCO05s as background global geopotential model. The resulting geoid is distributed in the WGS84 system (note that between WGS84 and WRS80, there is a shift of approximately 93 cm for Costa Rica). The GCR-RSH-2020 accuracy was assessed by comparing it with GNSS/levelling values on 25 selected benchmarks of the Costa Rica vertical reference system, showing differences with a standard deviation of 0.207 m. The geoid model is provided in ISG format 2.0 (ISG Format Specifications), while the file in its original data format is available at the model ISG webpage.

    Beschreibung: The International Service for the Geoid (ISG) was founded in 1992 (as International Geoid Service - IGeS) and it is now an official service of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), under the umbrella of the International Gravity Field Service (IGFS). The main activities of ISG consist in collecting, analysing and redistributing local and regional geoid models, as well as organizing international schools on the geoid determination (Reguzzoni et al., 2021).

    Beschreibung: This data publication is supplementary to the study on headwall erosion rates at Glacier d'Otemma in Switzerland, by Wetterauer et al. (2022). Debris on glacier surfaces stems from steep bedrock hillslopes that tower above the ice, so-called headwalls. Recently, rock walls in high-alpine glacial environments experience increased destabilization due to climate warming. Since supraglacial debris alters the melt behaviour of the ice underneath, increased headwall erosion and debris delivery to glacier surfaces will modify glacial mass balances. Therefore, we expect that the response of glaciers to climate change is likely linked to how headwall erosion responds to climate change. As headwall debris is deposited on the ice surface of valley glaciers it is passively transported downglacier, both supra- and englacially. Where two glaciers join, debris along their margins is merged to form medial moraines. Since medial moraine debris tends to be older downglacier, systematic downglacier-sampling of medial moraine debris and the measurement of in situ-produced cosmogenic 10Be concentrations ([10Be]) hold the potential to assess long-term (〉10^2-10^4 yrs) headwall erosion rates through time. However, to obtain the cosmogenic signals of headwall erosion, [10Be] within supraglacial debris need to be corrected for glacial transport time, as cosmogenic nuclides continue to accumulate during exposure and transport. This additional 10Be accumulation during debris transport can be accounted for by simple downglacier debris trajectory modelling. Providing our 10Be dataset together with detailed information on our 1-D modelling approach is the main objective of this data publication. The data is presented as one single xlsx-file with three different tables. A detailed description of the sample processing and the debris trajectory model are provided in the data description file of this data publication.     Beschreibung: The main objective of the work package 2 of the REFLECT project is to characterise relevant fluid properties and their reactions for saline fluids (type C). One of the specific goals was to collect fluid samples from several saline fluids from geothermal sites across Europe, determine their properties, and thus contribute to the Fluid Atlas (WP3). Additionally, the REFLECT team will compare those field data with data from lab experiments performed at near natural conditions. Samples of type C fluids were taken from several sites in Germany, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. The samples were analysed for major and minor ions, dissolved gases and isotopes. At Neustadt-Glewe one thermal water sample was taken by GFZ on June 02, 2021 and sent to Hydroisotop for analysis of main cations, anions, heavy metals, DOC, gases and isotopes (18O, 2H, 18O-SO4, 2H, 13C-DIC, 13C-CO2, 13C-CH4, 13C-CxHy, 2H-CH4, 34S-SO4, 34S-H2S, 2H-CH4). There was too little H2S in sample 363469 to conduct the 34S-H2S measurement. The dataset contains analysis results associated with the research project REFLECT.     Beschreibung: Project summary: The efficiency of geothermal utilisation largely depends on the behaviour of fluids that transfer heat between the geosphere and the engineered components of a power plant. The Horizon 2020 funded project REFLECT aims to avoid problems related to fluid chemistry rather than treat them. Fluid physical and chemical properties are often poorly defined, as in situ sampling and measurements at extreme conditions have proved difficult to date. Therefore, large uncertainties in current model predictions prevail, which are being tackled in REFLECT by collecting new, high-quality data in critical areas. The data is being implemented in a European geothermal fluid atlas and in predictive models to allow recommendations on how to best operate geothermal sites sustainably and to enhance geothermal technology development. Additionally, the REFLECT team will compare those field data with data from lab experiments performed at near natural conditions. Samples of type C fluids were taken from several sites in Germany, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. The samples were analysed for major and minor ions, dissolved gases and isotopes. In order to gain information about the increased methane content (about 65 vol-%) in the gas samples of the Groß Schönebeck production well (GrSk05/05) collected in February 2021 as compared to previous samples in 2010-2018 (10-14 vol-%), three gas samples were sampled by GFZ on 02 March 2021 at the valve at the wellhead when releasing the pressure from the wellhead. Main gas composition was measured by GFZ indicating again predominantly CH4 (63,9-64,2 Vol-%) followed by N2 (30,9 – 31,2 vol.-%) with minor amounts of H2 (3,4 vol-%) and CO2 (0,01-0,04 vol-%). Potential reasons for the increased methane content could be either microbial activity or contribution of fluid / gas from a different source within the reservoir. To determine the origin of methane, therefore, isotope analyses were performed. The samples arrived at Hydroisotop on March 13th 2021 for the analysis of higher hydrocarbons (C2-C5) and their isotopic composition (13C-CO2, 13C -CH4, 13C-CxHy and 2H-CH4). Together with the measured high amounts of higher hydrocarbons (ethane, propane etc.) they indicate a rather thermogenic source of the hydrocarbons. To better clarify the question of the source of methane, additionally, two downhole water samples from two different depths (1500 and 4000 m) were taken by GFZ on 09th and 10th of June 2021 and sent to Hydroisotop for analysis of main cations and anions, heavy metals, trace elements and isotopes (13C-CH4) in July 2021. The water sample composition resembles those of earlier measurements of samples collected in Groß Schönebeck (e.g. Regenspurg et al., 2010). However, since the well had not been in operation for a while a depth differentiation between the sample from 4000 m and the one from 1500 m is obvious. This was already visible by the black precipitate observed in the 4000 m sample, whereas the sample at 1500 m showed da reddish precipitate of presumably iron oxides. It should be noted that the nitrate content of the water samples is unusually high since reducing conditions are expected. This could have been caused by air contact of the sample and subsequent oxidation. Furthermore, a reduced silicon content shows in sample 365871 compared to sample 365870. Given the high temperature of the well, the higher silicon content is more plausible. The dataset contains analysis results associated with the research project REFLECT. On 10th of May 2021, two thermal water samples were taken by TNO before and after the heat exchanger at the geothermal site Heemskerk in the Netherlands. The samples sent to Hydroisotop were analysed for their hydrochemical composition, heavy metal and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content and stable isotopes (18O, 2H, 13C-DIC). It should be noted that the pH measured in the laboratory diverges from previously observed pH values which in the past have not been reported below 5,4. Concentrations of major ions had initially been reported too low but re-measurement of the samples yielded values in ranges that had previously been recorded. However, the concentraton of Lithium is much higher than expected. In order to resolve these uncertainties, the site Heemskerk will be sampled again. Samples of type C fluids were taken from several sites in Germany, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. The samples were analysed for major and minor ions, dissolved gases and isotopes. At the geothermal site Blumau in Austria five thermal water samples were taken by Hydroisotop at the production and injection well, as well as after the heat exchanger on 29th of June 2020. Besides the hydrochemical composition, dissolved gases, the heavy metal content, DOC and stable isotopes (18O, 2H, 13C-DIC) were analysed. Additionally, three thermal water samples were taken by the operator on 09th of March 2021 and sent to Hydroisotop for DOC measurements. The dataset contains analysis results associated with the research project reflect. Therefore, large uncertainties in current model predictions prevail, which are being tackled in REFLECT by collecting new, high-quality data in critical areas.     Beschreibung: The main objective of the work package 2 of the REFLECT project is to characterise relevant fluid properties and their reactions for saline fluids (type C). One of the specific goals was to collect fluid samples from several saline fluids from geothermal sites across Europe, determine their properties, and thus contribute to the Fluid Atlas (WP3). Additionally, the REFLECT team will compare those field data with data from lab experiments performed at near natural conditions. Samples of type C fluids were taken from several sites in Germany, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. The samples were analysed for major and minor ions, dissolved gases and isotopes. Two thermal water samples were taken by Hydroisotop at the production and injection wells in Insheim on 18th of June 2020. The samples were analysed for their hydrochemical composition, heavy metal and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content, dissolved gases and stable isotopes of water and gas components (18O, 2H, 34S-H2S, 34S-SO4, 18O-SO4, 13C-DIC, 13C-CO2, 13C-CH4, 2H-CH4). Nitrate and a positive redox potential is present in both water samples when reducing conditions would be expected in a deep geothermal well. On-site measurements showed no oxygen present. It is however possible that air contamination during sampling caused some ammonium to oxidize to nitrate. The dataset contains analysis results associated with the research project REFLECT.     Beschreibung: Results of a high throughput, robust and sensitive method for the precise analysis of 87Sr/86Sr by Multi-Collector-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS), Thermo Scientific Neptune PlusTM are reported. The data were obtained after accurate procedures of chemical separation and purification of Sr from geological matrices such as silicates, sulfides, carbonates and waters, using Eichrom Sr-spec resins as well as the routine for Sr isotope measurement. Mass discrimination and instrument drift were corrected by using natural constant 86Sr/88Sr ratios as an internal standard. Data on set of international certified standard materials (SRM NIST 987 and AGV-1) as well as intra-lab reference samples (water sample KGV-9) measured with MC-ICP-MS Neptune Plus, focusing on the accuracy and reproducibility of the analyses performed in the Neptune-TIMS Laboratory are here reported.

We performed this method adding thallium (Tl) as an internal isotopic standard to correct mass dependent isotopic fractionation. We also report the procedures for the chemical separat ion and purification of Pb from geological matri ces such as silicates , sulfides and historical artefacts . We report the data obtained on the international certified standard material SRM NIST 981 measured with MC ICP MS Neptune Plus, focusing on the accuracy and reproducibility of the analyses performed in the Neptune TIMS Laboratory (IGG-CNR in Pisa, Italy), and highlighting the advantages brought by the installation of this new mass spectrometer.

    Beschreibung: This dataset provides results from rheological tests of glucose syrup from two suppliers tested within the EPOS Multi-scale Laboratories (MSL) trans-national access (TNA) program 2019 at the Laboratory of Experimental Tectonics (LET), Univ. Roma TRE, Italy. Syrups Glucowheat 45/81 (GW45) and Glucowheat 60/79 (GW60) are produced by Blattmann Schweiz AG, Switzerland (2019 batch). Syrups GlucoSweet 44 (GS44) and GlucoSweet 62 (GS62) are produced by ADEA (Amidi Destrini ed Affini), Italy (2019 batch) . The four tested glucose syrups are labeled according to their DE value (dextrose equivalent value). For tested products from Blattmann Schweiz AG, the second number refers to the weight percentage of dry substance. Glucose syrup GS44 is used in full lithospheric scale analogue experiments at the Tectonic Modelling Lab (TecLab) at the University of Bern, Switzerland as a low-viscosity material simulating the asthenospheric mantle lithosphere to provide isostatic equilibration. The materials have been analyzed using a MCR301 Rheometer (Anton Paar) equipped with parallel plates geometry and rotational regime . To prevent the evaporation of the samples during the measurements, an external water-lock device has been used.

    Beschreibung: This data set provides a series of experiments from ring-shear tests (RST) on various materials that are used at several laboratories worldwide. The data contains the results of slide-hold-slide tests and the processed outputs of standardized ring shear tester data from related publications. Additionally, microscopy images of the materials under plain and polarized light are provided. The time dependent restrengthening of the materials is quantified using slide-hold-slide tests. This restrengthening has implications on the reactivation potential of granular shear zones in analogue models. With the provided software we first analyze the experimental data and then compare the angles and stresses needed to reactivate normal faults in the materials. We find that while healing rates are low, the majority of samples can not reactivate normal faults that are generated through extension of an analogue model.

    Beschreibung: The software is provided as an executable python module. The software automatically analyzes the files present in the data publication. The results are saved in the form of the images presented in the main publication. Each figure is implemented as a dedicated function that first loads the necessary data, then does some processing steps, such as curve fitting, and then plots the outputs in the desired layout. A 'main' function calls all figure functions sequentially. However, the packages is modular so that each individual plot has a standalone function which could be used with other, similarly structured data. Several submodules provide additional data for plotting, e.g. the 'groups' submodule that contains naming schemes and the densities for all samples.

    Beschreibung: The International Geodynamics and Earth Tide Service (IGETS) was established in 2015 by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). IGETS continues the activities of the Global Geodynamics Project (GGP, 1997-2015) to provide support to geodetic and geophysical research activities using superconducting gravimeter (SG) data within the context of an international network. The Walferdange Underground Laboratory for Geodynamics (WULG) is located at the middle of a long labyrinth of galleries which originally have been established for the commercial extraction of gypsum. Exceptional temperature and humidity stability, the absence of water and human perturbations, distance from the ocean and easy access, were some of the motivations for initially choosing this site for instrumentation and Earth tide research. Instruments to measure the micro deformations produced by the tidal forces have been developed and tested in the Laboratory for more than 30 years. Ground deformations and earthquakes are or have been recorded continuously by means of spring gravimeters, vertical and horizontal pendulums, long base water tube tiltmeters, vertical and horizontal strain meters, short period and broad band seismometers. Meteorological parameters (temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure), as well as radon gas emissions, are also continuously monitored in various locations within the mine. In 2000, the Minister of Research of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg decided to establish a new International Reference Station for Intercomparisons of Absolute Gravimeters (ISIAG). The instrumentation to support the project includes a superconducting gravimeter OSG-CT040, an absolute gravimeter FG5X-216, and other ancillary equipment necessary to support research. In January 2002, a first superconducting gravimeter was installed. The instrument was then stopped in March 2003 due to an abnormally large instrumental drift. In December 2003, it was replaced by a brand-new gravimeter with the same name and which continuously operates since that date. Absolute gravity measurements have been performed on a regular time base to calibrate the superconducting gravimeter and to estimate its instrumental drift. Since 2003, the WULG hosted three European Comparisons and one International Comparison of Absolute Gravimeters. It was the first international comparison outside the walls of the BIPM (Bureau International des Poids et Mesures) in Sèvres (France) where it had traditionally been organized for 30 years.

    Beschreibung: This dataset provides the surface velocity fields derived with MatPIV (open-source Matlab toolbox for Particle Image Velocimetry; Sveen 2004) of three seismotectonic analog models (e.g., Rosenau et al., 2017) performed to investigate the role of geometry and friction of a single subducting seamount on the seismogenic behavior of the megathrust. Model 1 has a seamount covered by sandpaper (i.e., high friction) that is placed at 1/2 of the trench-parallel length of the seismogenic zone. Model 3 has the same geometry of model 1, but the seamount is in direct contact with the gelatin (i.e., not covered by sandpaper, hence low friction). Model 5 has a low friction patch (i.e., no geometry) that is placed again at 1/2 of the trench-parallel length of the seismogenic zone. Together with the surface velocity fields, we also provide Matlab scripts for visualization. A more detailed description of the experimental setup, configuration of the models and materials can be found in Menichelli et al. (submitted), to which this dataset is supplementary. Our seismotectonic models represent a downscaled subduction zone (1 cm in the model corresponds to 6.4 km in nature; Rosenau et al., 2017). The experimental setup consists of a 60 x 34 cm2 Plexiglass box with a 10°-dipping aluminum basal plate that moves downward with a constant velocity of 0.01 cm/s, analog of the subducting plate. The overriding plate is represented by an elastic wedge of 2.5 wt% pigskin gelatin at T = 10 °C (Di Giuseppe et al., 2009). The seismogenic zone of the megathrust is simulated using a rectangular sandpaper patch (Corbi et al., 2013), with a downdip width of 16 cm and located 31 and 47 cm from the backstop. This corresponds to a 100-km-wide seismogenic zone extending over a depth interval between 15 and 34 km. The updip and down dip aseismic regions of the megathrust are simulated by plastic sheets that are fixed on the setup frame and not subject to subduction (Corbi et al., 2013). A 3D-printed PLA seamount is placed on the seismogenic zone (e.g., Van Rijsingen et al., 2019). The seamount has a height of 6.28 mm and a diagonal length of 94 mm, corresponding to 4 km and 60 km in nature, respectively. These dimensions scale well-known seamounts, such as the Joban Seamount chain in the Japan Trench or the Louisville seamount chain in the Tonga-Kermadec Trench. Experiments were monitored with a CCD camera that acquired a sequence of high-resolution top-view images (1600 x 1200 pixels2, 8 bit, 256 gray levels) at 7.5 fps for the entire duration of the experiment (i.e., ca. 24 minutes). Images are processed with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV; Adam et al., 2005) using the open-source Matlab toolbox MatPIV (Sveen, 2004). MatPIV provides the velocity field between two consecutive frames, measured at the surface of the model. The velocity field was then used as input to identify analog seismic events using the open-source Matlab function findpeak. The threshold used was 0.1 cm/s. Once earthquakes were identified, we derived their source parameters such as seismic slip, magnitude, and recurrence time following Corbi et al. (2017) and van Rijsingen et al. (2019).

Post-processing steps comprise: (1) subtraction of a long-term mean field; (2) optionally, decorrelation and smoothing with VDK filter (anisotropic filter taking the actual error covariance information of the underlying GSM coefficients into account, see Horvath et al. (2018)); (3) replacement of coefficients C20, C30 (only for the months starting from 2016/11 and later), C21 and S21 and its formal standard deviations by values estimated from a combination of GRACE/GRACE-FO and Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR); (4) subtraction of linear trend caused by Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) as provided by a numerical model; (5) insertion of geocenter coefficients (C10, C11, S11); and (6) removal of estimated aliased signal of the S2 tide (161 days period). These coefficients represent signals caused by water mass redistribution over the continents and in the oceans. These post-processed GRACE/GRACE-FO GSM products are denoted as Level-2B products. There are multiple variants of Level-2B products available that differ by the characteristics of the anisotropic filter applied.     Beschreibung: This data set is a description of a novel analogue modelling method used to run lithospheric-scale tectonic models, and to uniquely monitor these models through X-Ray CT-scanning techniques at the Tectonic Modelling Lab of the University of Bern (Switzerland). It includes information on the model set-up and model materials, and includes a step-by-step description of the general modelling procedure. A first application of this novel procedure, for the simulation of lithospheric scale rifting processes can be found in Zwaan & Schreurs (2023a) in Tectonics, with supplementary data publicly available via GFZ Data Services (Zwaan & Schreurs 2023b). The results of this work prove the feasibility of the method, and opens the door to a broad variety of new tectonic modelling studies.

    Beschreibung: This data set was taken within the Perturbations of Earth Surface Processes by Large Earthquakes PRESSurE Project (https://www.gfz-potsdam.de/en/section/geomorphology/projects/pressure/) of the GFZ Potsdam. This project aims to better understand the role of earthquakes on earth surface processes. Strong earthquakes cause transient perturbations of the near Earth’s surface system. These include the widespread landsliding and subsequent mass movement and the loading of rivers with sediments. In addition, rock mass is shattered during the event, forming cracks that affect rock strength and hydrological conductivity. Often overlooked in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake, these perturbations can represent a major part of the overall disaster with an impact that can last for years before restoring to background conditions. Thus, the relaxation phase is part of the seismically induced change by an earthquake and needs to be monitored in order to understand the full impact of earthquakes on the Earth system. Early June 2015, shortly after the April 2015 Mw7.9 Gorkha earthquake, 6 automatic compact weather station were installed in the upper Bhotekoshi catchment covering an area ~50km2. The weather station network is centered around the Kahule Khola catchment, a small headwater catchment and is part of a wider data acquisition strategy including hydrological monitoring, seismometers, geophones and high resolution optical (RapidEye) as well as radar imagery (TanDEM TerraSAR-X). https://www.gfz-potsdam.de/sektion/geomorphologie/projekte/pressure/

    Beschreibung: This data set is digital image correlation data, including surface displacement and strain data from laboratory subduction megathrust earthquake cycles. The data consists of grids of surface strain (elastic and permanent), trench-normal surface displacement, vorticity and divergence maps over analog seismic cycles, and time series of surface displacement. The data have been derived using a stereo camera setup and processed with LaVision Davis 10 software. Detailed descriptions of the experiments and results regarding the surface pattern of the strain can be found in Kosari et al. (2023), to which this data set is supplementary. We use three configurations to mimic the along-strike heterogeneous spatiotemporal distribution of frictional locking (Rosenau et al., 2019; Kosari et al., 2022b). A central patch separates two stick-slip zones as an aseismic barrier in all configurations. The frictional properties of the central patch vary as a velocity-strengthening (VS configuration), a velocity-neutral (VN), and a velocity-weakening (VW configuration). The VW zone generates smaller slip events with a higher frequency (i.e., recurrence interval) than the stick-slip zones. Four frictionally different materials have been emplaced on the interface: The sticky-rice as velocity-weakening material (a-b〈0) resulting in stick-slip cycles simulating earthquake cycles, fine-grained sugar and rubber-sand mixture as velocity-strengthening (a-b〉0) and velocity-neutral (a-b=0) material, and fine-grained salt as velocity-weakening material (a-b〈0) (Kosari et al., 2023).

The dataset gave the opportunity to reconstruct variation of past geomagnetic field at high latitude for the last 22 kya and define the path of the virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP). Core to core correlation has been reconstructed by means of the StratFit software (Sagnotti and Caricchi, 2018), which is based on the Excel forecast function and linear regression between subsequent couples of selected tie-points.     Beschreibung: This dataset includes raw data used in the paper by Reitano et al. (2022), focused on the effect of imposed boundary conditions (regional slope and rainfall rate) on the morphological evolution of analogue landscapes; the paper also focuses on applicability of stream power laws on analogue models, defining if and how the parametrization used in natural landscapes works in analogue ones. The experiments have been carried out at Laboratory of Experimental Tectonics (LET), University “Roma Tre” (Rome). Detailed descriptions of the experimental apparatus and experimental procedures implemented can be found in the paper to which this dataset refers. Here we present: • Pictures recording the evolution of the models. • GIFs showing time-lapses of models. • Raw DEMs of the models, used for extracting data later discusses in the paper. • Raw channels data (.mat files).

    Beschreibung: We took digital images during the evolution of the experiments. These images are stored in the “2022_029_Reitano-et-al_Pictures_and_GIFs” folder. Digital Images The qualitative evolution of the analogue models has been recorded using a digital top-view camera (Canon EOS 200D). Digital pictures have not been modified with other imaging software. Data from models' surface Laser scan provides a point cloud, composed by x, y, z coordinated of the points composing the model surface (the number of points is function of the laser resolution). The laser scans are converted to raw DEMs, here stored in the “DEMs” folder. Bottom left corner in the DEMs is randomly chosen to be -70 ∙ 103 m. No data values equal to -9999. Cell size is 1 mm. Channels data are collected into “Channels” folder. These data are .png channel longitudinal profiles and StreamOBJ files (.mat, TopoToolbox) containing all channels information. For every model and for every chosen time step (see Supplementary Information of the paper), we selected four rivers. These rivers are plotted together at the same time step. Eroded volumes and Incision rates We create a numeric regular grid on the model surface. The eroded volumes are extracted calculating the cumulative difference in elevation (Δz) of the same cells at consecutive times. The cells dimension is function of the horizontal resolution of the laser scan (here 0.05 mm). Knowing the cell dimensions and the corresponding Δz, is it possible to obtain the total volume of eroded material at every time step. Incision rates are computed finding the value of incision for every point forming the selected channels. These values of incision are then divided for the time step at which they are collected, obtaining the incision rate through time.

    Beschreibung: This data set includes overviews and videos depicting the surface evolution (time-lapse photographs, topography data and digital image correlation [DIC] analysis) of 6 analogue models simulating rotational rift tectonics. In these experiments we examined the links between rotational rifting and different distributions of lithospheric weaknesses, and the evolution of the East African Rift System. All experiments were performed at the Tectonic Modelling Laboratory of the University of Bern (UB). Detailed descriptions of the model set-up and results, as well as the monitoring techniques can be found in Zwaan et al. (2023).

    Beschreibung: We present a new, consistently processed seismicity catalogue for the Eastern and Southern Alps, based on the temporary dense Swath-D monitoring network. The final catalogue includes 6,053 earthquakes for the time period 2017-2019 and has a magnitude of completeness of −1.0ML. The smallest detected and located events have a magnitude of −1.7ML. Aimed at the low to moderate seismicity in the study region, we generated a multi-level, mostly automatic workflow which combines a priori information from local catalogues and waveform-based event detection, subsequent efficient GPU-based event search by template matching, P & S arrival time pick refinement and location in a regional 3-D velocity model. The resulting seismicity distribution generally confirms the previously identified main seismically active domains, but provides increased resolution of the fault activity at depth. In particular, the high number of small events additionally detected by the template search contributes to a more dense catalogue, providing an important basis for future geological and tectonic studies in this complex part of the Alpine orogen.

    Beschreibung: This dataset includes paleomagnetic data from 70 sampling sites, collected in northeastern Iran during two campaigns carried out in August 2016 and September 2017 (Table 1). The data are supplement to Mattei et al. (2019). Data allow to reconstruct the rotation history of the outer margin of the Eurasia-Arabia collision area represented by the Ala-Dagh, Binalud and Kopeh-Dagh mountain belts. The sampled formations are red beds units from the Lower Cretaceous Shurijeh Fm. and from the Middle-Upper Miocene Upper Red Fm (URF). Paleomagnetic results from all the sampled areas show a homogeneous amount of clockwise (CW) rotations measured in the above-mentioned Formations. These paleomagnetic results suggest that the oroclinal bending process that caused the curvature of Alborz mountain belt in north Iran after the Middle-Late Miocene, also extended to the Ala-Dagh, Binalud and Kopeh-Dagh mountain belts, at the north-eastern border of the Arabia-Eurasia deforming zone. This pattern of vertical axis rotations is inconsistent with the present-day kinematics of the northern Iranian blocks as described by seismicity and GPS data, suggesting that the tectonic processes responsible for the bending of northern Iran mountain chains are no longer active and that the westward motion of the South Caspian basin, and therefore the initiation of opposite strike-slip motion along the Ashk-Abad and Shahrud faults, occurred very recently (∼2My ago).

    Beschreibung: This dataset includes paleomagnetic data from 19 sampling sites, collected in central Iran during two sampling campaigns carried out in April 2011 (Yazd) and November 2011 (Ferdows). The data are supplement to Mattei et al. (2020). The sites were collected along two tectonic structures representative of the main tectonic features of central Iran: the Yazd fold system located in an area dominated by the occurrence of NNW-SSE oriented right-lateral strike slip faults, and the Ferdows fold system that developed at the western termination of the E–W left-lateral strike-slip Dasht-e-Bayaz fault. Paleomagnetic results show opposite vertical-axis rotations related to the different orientation and sense of movement of strike-slip fault systems, suggesting that in Central Iran the N–S oriented right-lateral and E–W oriented left-lateral strike-slip faults play significant roles in accommodating the Arabia-Eurasia convergence, by rotating counterclockwise and clockwise in the horizontal plane, respectively.

    Beschreibung: This dataset contains measurements of viscous and viscoelastic materials that are used for analogue modelling. Proper density and viscosity scaling of ductile layers in the crust and lithosphere, requires materials like Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), to be mixed with fillers and low viscoity silicone oils. Changing the filler content and filler material, the density, viscosity and power-law coefficient can be tuned according to the requirements. All materials contain a large amount of PDMS and all but one a small amount of an additional silicone oil. Adding plasticine or barium sulfate lead to shear thinning rheologies with power-law exponents of p〈0.95. Adding corundum powder only has a minor effect on the power-law exponent. Some mixtures also have an apparent yield point but all are in the liquid state in the tested range. In general, the rheologies of the materials are very complex and in some cases strongly temperature dependent. However, in the narrow range of relevant strain rates, the behaviour is well defined by a power-law relation and thus found suitable for simulating ductile layers in crust and lithosphere.

    Beschreibung: The Atmosphere and Ocean non-tidal De-aliasing Level-1B (AOD1B) product is widely used in satellite gravimetry to correct for transient effects of atmosphere-ocean mass variability that would otherwise alias into monthly-mean global gravity fields. The most recent release is based on the global ERA5 reanalysis and ECMWF operational data together with simulations from the general ocean circulation model MPIOM consistently forced with fields of the same atmospheric data-set. As background models are inevitably imperfect, residual errors due to aliasing remain. Accounting for the uncertainties of the background model data has, however, proven to be a useful approach to mitigate the impact of residual aliasing. In light of the changes made in the new release of AOD1B, previous uncertainty assessments are deemed too pessimistic and have been revised in the new time-series of true errors: AOe07. One possible way to include the uncertainty information of background models in gravity field estimation or simulation studies is through the computation and application of a variance-covariance matrix that describes the spatio-temporal error characteristics of the background model. The AOe07 variance-covariance-matrix provides this information through (1) a fully populated matrix up to degree and order 40 as well as (2) a diagonal matrix up to degree and order 180.

    Beschreibung: This data publication contains (i) a slab model of the Cascadia subduction zone, derived from receiver functions, parameterized as depth to the three interfaces: t (top), c (central) and m (Moho), in NetCDF format; (ii) the station measurements of all parameters in the model in tabular and Raysum model file format; (iii) the raw receiver functions in SAC format; and (iv) auxiliary scripts for loading and plotting the data. A total of 45,601 individual receiver functions recorded at 298 seismic stations distributed across the Cascadia forearc contributed to the slab model. For each station, 100 s recordings symmetric about the P -wave arrival (i.e. 50 s noise and 50 s signal) of earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.5 and 8, in the distance range between 30 and 100 degree, were downloaded from the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) data center, the Northern California Earthquake Data Center (NCEDC), and the Natural Resources Canada Data Center (NRCAN). After quality control, radial and transverse receiver functions were computed through frequency-domain simultaneous deconvolution, with an optimal damping factor found through generalized cross validation. The continental forearc and subducting slab were parameterized as three layers over a mantle half-space, with the subduction stratigraphy bounding interfaces labeled as t (top), c (central) and m (Moho). Synthetic receiver functions were calculated through ray-theoretical modeling of plane-wave scattering at the model interfaces. The thickness, S -wave velocity (VS) and P - to S -wave velocity ratio (VP/VS) of each layer, as well as the common strike and dip of the bottom two layers and the top of the half space (in total 11 parameters) were optimized simultaneously through a simulated annealing global parameter search scheme. The misfit was defined as the anti-correlation (1 minus the cross-correlation coefficient) between the observed and predicted receiver functions, bandpass filtered between 2 and 20 s period duration. In total, 171, 143 and 137 quality A nodes were determined to constrain the t, c and m interfaces, respectively. At the trench, 105 nodes at 3 km below the local bathymetry were inserted to constrain the t and c interfaces, and at 6.5 km deeper to constrain the m interface, representing typical sediment and igneous crustal thicknesses. A spline surface was fitted to these nodes to yield margin-wide depth models. The spline coefficients were found using singular value decomposition, with the nominal depth uncertainties supplied as weights. The solution was damped by retaining the 116, 117, and 116 largest singular values for the t, c and m interfaces, respectively, based on analysis of L-curves and the Akaike information criterion.     Beschreibung: The southern Andes are regarded as a typical subduction orogen formed by oblique plate convergence. Despite decades of studies, there is considerable uncertainty as to how deformation is kinematically partitioned in the upper plate. Using scaled analogue experiments modelling, we test the concept of dextral transpression for this orogen. We advocate that the GPS velocity field portrays interseismic deformation related to deformation of strong crust north, and weak crust south, of 37°S. Contrary to the popular hypotheses that the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault Zone, a prominent intra-arc deformation zone, takes up most of the plate boundary-parallel dextral strike-slip, we find that dextral transpression affects the entire model orogen through tectonic segmentation of crust. Moreover, prominent, regularly spaced sinistral oblique-slip thrust faults, interpreted as antithetic Riedel shears, developed spontaneously in all of our experiments and call into question the general believe that their NW-striking natural equivalents formed from pre-Andean discontinuities. Our experiments prompt us to reconsider the apparently well-established geodynamic concept that strain and margin-parallel displacement is localized on a few margin-parallel faults in the southern Andes.

    Beschreibung: The periodic volcanic activity of Stromboli Volcano, Aeolian Islands, Italy, is interrupted by paroxysmal eruptions on a decadal interval. In 2019, two strong paroxysms on July 3rd and August 28th, ended a more than a decade long period of regular strombolian activity. During normal strombolian activity the volcano erupts highly porphyritic scoria and lava (HP) with a shoshonitic basalt composition. In paroxysmal eruptions the HP material is mingled with low porphyritic (LP) pumices. This dataset includes the first radiogenic isotope data on the bulk compositions of the LP and HP components erupted on July 3rd 2019, and a HP sample from the lava flow that followed the paroxysm, and a LP sample from the paroxysm on August 28th 2019. The analyzed radiogenic isotope ratios include Sr, Nd, Hf, and Pb. This dataset further includes in-situ EPMA and LA-ICP_MS measurements of major and trace elements in the glass, olivine, plagioclase and clinopyroxene phases.

    Beschreibung: This data publication provides data from 39 experiments performed in 2021 to 2022 in the Gas-mixing lab at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Germany). The experiments were conducted to investigate the charging and discharging potential of decompressed soda-lime glass beads in varying enveloping gas composition and two different transporting gas species (argon and nitrogen). The experimental setup is a modified version of an apparatus first developed by Alidibirov and Dingwell (1996) and further modified by Cimarelli et al. (2014), Gaudin and Cimarelli (2019), and Stern et al. (2019) to enable the detection and quantification of discharges caused by the interaction of the discharging particles. The latest modifications enable the setup to perform experiments under gas-tight conditions allowing to test different atmospheric composition and pressure and to sample the gas within the particle collector tank. The sample material was ejected from the autoclave into the particle collector tank that is insulated from the autoclave and works as a Faraday cage. Discharges going from the jet to the nozzle were recorded by a datalogger. Additionally, the ejection of the decompressed material was recorded by a high-speed camera. The gas composition in the collector tank was changed from air to CO2 and a mixture of CO2 and CO. The particle collector tank was conditioned in two different modes: purging three times the tank with the desired gas composition or three times of purging and applying a vacuum in between. Analysis of gas samples taken from the collector tank before conducting the experiments revealed that in both cases a complete removal of the air was not achieved, but significantly reduced by the evacuation-purging method. Two gases were used to pressurize the sample within the autoclave: Nitrogen and Argon. The experimental results were compared to previous experiments (Springsklee et al., 2022a; Springsklee et al., 2022b).

The original time-series were provided by the analysis centers (ACs) and partner analysis centers (PCs) of COST-G.

    Beschreibung: COST-G performs a harmonization and quality control of the individual input solutions of the COST-G ACs and PCs. The combination of COST-G GRACE RL01 is then performed applying variance component estimation on the solution level (Jean et al., 2018): https://doi.org/10.1007/s00190-018-1123-5). The resulting COST-G combined gravity fields are validated assessing their signal and noise content in the spectral and spatial domain (Meyer et al., 2019: https://doi.org/10.1007/s00190-019-01274-6) and by the COST-G Product Evaluation Group (PEG).

    Beschreibung: This dataset presents the raw data of an experimental series of analogue models performed to investigate the influence of inherited brittle fabrics on narrow continental rifting. This model series was performed to test the influence of brittle pre-existing fabrics on the rifting deformation by cutting the brittle layer at different orientations with respect to the extension direction. An overview of the experimental series is shown in Table 1. In this dataset we provide four different types of data, that can serve as supporting material and for further analysis: 1) The top-view photos, taken at different steps and showing the deformation process of each model; they can be used to interpret the geometrical characteristics of rift-related faults; 2) Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) used to reconstruct the 3D deformation of the performed analogue models, allowing for quantitative analysis of the fault pattern. 3) Short movies built from top-view photos which help to visualize the evolution of model deformation; 4) line-drawing of fault and fracture patters to be used for fault statistical quantification. Further details on the modelling strategy and setup can be found in Corti (2012), Maestrelli et al. (2020), Molnar et al. (2020), Philippon et al. (2015), Zwaan et al. (2021) and in the publication associated with this dataset. Materials used for these analogue models were described in Montanari et al. (2017) Del Ventisette et al. (2019) and Zwaan et al. (2020).

    Beschreibung: The Northeast Atlantic (NEA) region has long been a subject of interest due to its complex geological history, particularly regarding the interaction between the Iceland plume and the lithospheric plates. In this data publication, we present a comprehensive three-dimensional structural and density model of the NEA crust and uppermost mantle, consolidating and integrating a wide range of previously fragmented data sets. Our model highlights the influence of the Iceland plume on the region's geological evolution, shedding light on the mechanisms that facilitated the continental breakup between Europe and Laurentia during the earliest Eocene period. The whole workflow and methods are described in Gomez Dacal et al. (2023) and its Supplementary Information.

    Beschreibung: This data set includes videos depicting the surface evolution (time-lapse photography, topography data and Digital Image Correlation [DIC] analysis) of 11 analogue models, divided in three model series (A, B and C), simulating rifting and subsequent inversion tectonics. In these models we test how orthogonal or oblique extension, followed by either orthogonal or oblique compression, as well as syn-rift sedimentation, influenced the reactivation of rift structures and the development of new inversion structures. We compare these models with an intracontinental inverted basin in NE Brazil (Araripe Basin). All experiments were performed at the Tectonic Modelling Laboratory of the University of Bern (UB). We used an experimental set-up involving two long mobile sidewalls, two rubber sidewalls (fixed between the mobile walls, closing the short model ends), and a mobile and a fixed base plate. We positioned a 5 cm high block consisting of an intercalation of foam (1 cm thick) and Plexiglas (0.5 cm thick) bars on the top of the base plates. Then we added layers of viscous and brittle analogue materials representing the ductile and brittle lower and upper crust in our experiments, which were 3 cm and 6 cm thick, respectively. A seed made of the same viscous material was positioned at the base of the brittle layer, in order to localize the formation of an initial graben in our models. The standard model deformation rate was 20 mm/h, over a duration of 2 hours for a total of 40 mm of divergence, followed by 2 hours of convergence at the same rate (except for Models B3 and C3, since the oblique rifting did not create space for 40 mm of orthogonal inversion). For syn-rift sedimentation, we applied an intercalation of feldspar and quartz sand in the graben. Model parameters and detailed description of model set-up are summarized in Table 1, and results and their interpretation can be found in Richetti et al. (2023).

    Beschreibung: At valley glaciers, rockwall erosion supplies debris to glacier surfaces. Once deposited on the ice, rockwall debris is passively entrained and becomes part of the glacial system, e.g., forming medial moraines as downglacier transport continues. Where debris occurs supraglacial, it modifies ice ablation and, thus, changes in rockwall erosion and debris supply rates modify glacial debris cover and mass balance and may affect glacier retreat in response to climate change. Yet, estimates on rockwall erosion rates close to glacier surfaces are few and quantifying spatiotemporal supply patterns is not trivial. This data publication is supplementary to the study on rockwall erosion rates at five Swiss valley glaciers around Pigne d’Arolla, by Wetterauer & Scherler (2023). We temporally and spatially assess rockwall erosion by measuring in situ-produced cosmogenic 10Be concentrations ('[10Be]measured') in medial moraine debris, which we systematically sampled along downglacier-profiles, and by comparing records from various medial moraines, which are supplied by rockwalls differing in exposure and morphology. However, as '[10Be]measured' within supraglacial debris is the sum of '[10Be]rockwall', accumulated during rockwall erosion, and '[10Be]transport', accumulated during post-depositional downglacier transport, medial moraine '[10Be]measured' should be corrected for '[10Be]transport'. If glacier velocities through time are known, '[10Be]transport' can be estimated by downglacier debris trajectory modelling. Providing our 10Be dataset and ~40-year records of glacier surface velocities from four of the five valley glaciers (Glacier du Brenay, Glacier de Cheilon, Glacier de Pièce, Glacier de Tsijiore Nouve) is the main objective of this data publication. The dataset of the fifth glacier (Glacier d’Otemma) has already been published as case study by Wetterauer et al. (2022a,b).

    Beschreibung: The International Geodynamics and Earth Tide Service (IGETS) was established in 2015 by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). IGETS continues the activities of the Global Geodynamics Project (GGP, 1997-2015) to provide support to geodetic and geophysical research activities using superconducting gravimeter (SG) data within the context of an international network. Raw gravity and local atmospheric pressure records sampled at second and the same records decimated at 1‐minute samples are provided as Level 1 products of the IGETS network for the Pecný station (https://doi.org/10.5880/igets.pe.l1.001). The corrected 1-minute samples have been prepared by operators of the station, from raw decimated 1-minute samples, by following steps: 1) The 1-minute samples have been used to compute residual gravity signal by using the SG calibration factor and applying corrections from tides, atmosphere and polar motion. 2) These data have been associated with auxiliary data from the SG (Dewar Pressure, Tx/Ty balance, Neck temperature etc.) and information from LOG files. 3) Gaps have been created in the residual gravity signal according to auxiliary data and log files. Moreover, gaps were created also for large disturbances, where the residual signal exceeding 20 nm/s^2. 4) Gaps up to 24 hours were filled by a linear fit. 5) Spikes exceeding 5 nm/s^2 were removed by using TSOFT. 6) Steps were applied only in exceptional cases in accordance with LOG files. 7) The cleaned residual signal was converted to corrected 1-minute samples by using the same corrections and the calibration factor as used in 1). Therefore, the corrected 1-minute signal is again in units as the raw data (Volt). Note, since 31 October 2017, the OSG-050 is running at new site (NGL - new gravimetric laboratory at Pecný) according to https://doi.org/10.5880/igets.pe.l1.001.

    Beschreibung: This dataset is a continuously growing collection of lead isotope reference data. Lead isotopes are an established method to reconstruct the raw material provenance of archaeological objects. They are typically applied to artefacts made of copper, lead, silver, and their alloys. However, also the raw material provenance of other materials such as glass, pigments and pottery was already reconstructed with lead isotopes. To successfully reconstruct the origin of the raw material, lead isotope signatures from as many as possible suitable raw material occurrences must be known. In the past, large-scaled research projects were carried out to characterise ore deposits especially in the Mediterranean area and Western Europe. However, many of these data are dispersed in the literature and were published in scientific articles or monographies. Consequently, each researcher or at least each research group had to build their own up-to-date data base of reference data from the literature. To overcome these restrictions, to facilitate work with lead isotope reference data and particularly to make the data FAIR, i.e. findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (Wilkinson et al., 2016), these published data are compiled and transferred into a uniform layout. They are further enhanced with additional metadata to facilitate their use in raw material provenance studies. Currently, the database is restricted to ores and minerals as these are the most relevant materials for provenance studies of ancient metals. Future updates will include hitherto uncovered regions but also additional data from countries already present. Slag and other metallurgical (by-) products from ancient sites in close vicinity to ore deposits generally are a genuine representation of the ores utilised in historic times. As such, they are highly relevant for provenance studies and an extension to these materials is therefore planned. GlobaLID is a representation of the collective work of researchers on Pb isotope studies. As such, the database is seen as a community engagement project that invites scientists all over the world to become active contributors of GlobaLID. The initiators of the database dedicate their effort to the continuation and maintenance of the database but only the support of the whole community will allow a rapid and successful growth of GlobaLID.

    Beschreibung: A compilation of 90,688 published radiometric dates for sedimentary rocks from the South American Andes and adjacent parts of South America have been tabulated for access by researchers via GEOROC Expert Datasets. The compilation exists as a spreadsheet for access via MS Excel, Google Sheets, and other spreadsheet applications. Initial igneous compilations were utilized in two publications by the author, Pilger (1981, 1984). The compilations have been added to in subsequent years with the metamorphic and sedimentary compilations separated in the last few years. Locations in latitude and longitude are largely taken from the original source, if provided, with UTM locations maintained and converted; in some cases, sample locations were digitized from electronic maps if coordinates were otherwise not available. Analytical results are not included to prevent the files from becoming too large. The existing compilation incorporates compilations by other workers in smaller regions of the Andes. References to original and compilation sources are included. While I am updating reconstructions of the South American and Nazca/Farallon plates, incorporating recent studies in the three oceans, for comparison with the igneous dates for the past 80 m. y., it is hoped that the spreadsheets will be of value to other workers. Reliability: In most cases the data have been copy/pasted from published or appendix tables. In a few cases, the location has been digitized from published maps; the (equatorial equidistant) maps were copied into Google Earth and positioned according to indicated coordinates, with locations digitized and copied/pasted into the spreadsheet. (It is possible that published maps are conventional Mercator-based, even if not so identified, rather than either equatorial equidistant or Universal Transverse Mercator; this can be a source of error in location. For UTMs, the errors should be minor.) Duplicates are largely recognized by equivalent IDs, dates, and uncertainties.     Beschreibung: Operational GRACE Follow-On monthly gravity field solutions starting from June 2018 up to degree and order 96 computed with the Celestial Mechanics Approach at AIUB (release 02). The time series is a loose continuation of AIUB-RL02 GRACE monthly gravity field time series and is an update of the operational GRACE Follow-On monthly gravity field time series (https://doi.org/10.5880/ICGEM.2020.001) using Level-1B GRACE Follow-On data and operational accelerometer transplant data from TUG (Institute of Geodesy, TU Graz, Working Group Theoretical Geodesy and Satellite Geodesy) and updated modelling strategies concerning data screening and weighting. The time series is reprocessed starting with June 2018. The dataset is created within the framework of the G3P project (https://www.g3p.eu/), this project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 870353. The operational solution of release 02 provides a complete time series of GRACE Follow-on data derived monthly gravity field solutions, is regularly updated with new monthly solutions and features a consistent processing with an advanced noise modelling of GRACE Follow-On data. It is recommened for usage. It is strongly recommended to use release 02 and discontinue using release 01.

The database was created through automated web scraping of the Figshare data repository. Data included U-Pb and Pb-Pb dating, Lu-Hf isotopes, trace element and rare earth element chemistry and isotopes. Where available, metadata on the analytical method, lithology, sample description and sampling coordinates are included. All analyses include a citation and doi link to the original data hosted on Figshare. See metadata table for descriptions of table headers. See associated manuscript for web scraping code.

    Beschreibung: The main aim of this project is to investigate the crustal and mantle structure beneath the Longmenshan fault zone in China, based on a very dense passive seismology profile. The Longmenshan fault zone hosted the Wenchuan earthquake of May 2008 with a magnitude (Mw) of 7.9 and the Lushan earthquake of June 2013 with a magnitude (Mw) of 6.6. It is planned to mainly use the receiver-function method, to investigate the crustal and mantle structure beneath the Longmenshan fault zone. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data center, under network code 4O, and are embargoed until February 2024.

    Beschreibung: Intercropping is the simultaneous growth of two or more crops in the same space for a significant part of their life cycle (Willey, 1979). In this context, samples from one farm experiments in the growing season 2015/2016 and 2016/2017, embedded in the cropping systems of one arable farm in the surrounding of Pisa, central-western part of Italy, were collected for analysis. The treatments were: PCW, a temporary intercropping system of wheat and persian clover, sown in paired rows; CONTROLSTRIP, unfertilized wheat as a sole crop, sown in paired rows.
    Beschreibung: Methods
    Beschreibung: The samples were collected from a farm located in Valtriano, around 20 km from Pisa (43°36’N 10°29’E). The temporary intercropping system comprises common wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Bolero) and persian clover (Trifolium resupinatum L., cv. Laser). Sampling of above-ground plant biomass was done by hands in March 2016 and 2017. For each treatment, above-ground plant biomass was collected several plots which includes three subplots with dimension of 0.25m2 in 2016 and 0.075 m2 in 2017. The samples collected, only for the green part of the plant, were dried at 60°C for 48 h. Then, coarse grinding of the plant fibres (about 1 mm in diameter) was carried out, followed by further cryogenic grinding.

    Beschreibung: To seismically monitor the GEOREAL hydraulic stimulation experiment, that took place during the period 6-15 November 2023, a station network was set up in the vicinity of the Kontinentale Tiefbohrung/ KTB deep crustal lab near Windischeschenbach, Germany. The network comprised both surface stations, shallow borehole (25-150 m deep) stations as well as a borehole chain at 2000 m depth in the main borehole, ca. 200m apart from the pilot borehole. First stations were installed in early 2022 and removed in mid-2024. A total of 600 m³ of water was injected into the 4 km deep pilot borehole (KTB-VB, 12° 7.16' E, 49° 48.98' N, 513.418 m above NN ). This volume was injected through a stuck packer in the cased borehole into the open borehole section a depth of 3.85-4 km. No induced seismicity was observed during the injection experiment. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 4R, and is fully open.

    Beschreibung: The International Geodynamics and Earth Tide Service (IGETS) was established in 2015 by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). IGETS continues the activities of the Global Geodynamics Project (GGP, 1997-2015) to provide support to geodetic and geophysical research activities using superconducting gravimeter (SG) data within the context of an international network. The SG site “Serrahn” is located in the TERENO Observatory in the nort-eastern German lowlands. The observatory contributes to investigating the regional impact of climate and land use change. At the IGETS site Serrahn, the mean annual temperature is 8.8 °C and mean annual precipitation is 591 mm. The land cover is mainly characterized as a mixed forest, dominated by European beech and Scots pine. Influenced by the last glaciation in an outwash close to the terminal morraine, the uppermost soil layer of the site consists of aeolian sands up to a depth of 450 cm, followed by coarser sandy material with intercalated till layers. The unconfined groundwater level is at about 14 m below surface. There is hardly any human activity (e.g., traffic) at this quiet forest site. The nearest town is Neustrelitz at a distance of 5 km. Since December 2017, the superconducting gravimeter iGrav-033 is operated outdoors at this forest location (Latitude: 53.3392 N, Longitude: 13.17413 E, Elevation: 79.60 m). The gravimeter is installed in a dedicated field enclosure on top of a concrete pillar with an area of 1.1 m x 1.1 m at an elevation of 0.80 m above the terrain surface. The pillar has been build to a depth of 2.00 m below the surface. One additional pillar (also 1.1 m x 1.1 m, at surface level) is located right next to the iGrav installation and is used for repeated observations with absolute gravimeters (AG). At the site, meteorological (precipitation, air temperature, humidity, air pressure) and hydrological (groundwater, soil moisture, sapflow, throughfall) parameters are monitored by different sensors. Raw gravity and local atmospheric pressure records sampled at second intervals and the same records decimated at 1‐minute samples are provided as Level 1 products to the IGETS network.

    Beschreibung: This database contains mineral major and trace element compositions of gabbroic rocks composing the lower oceanic crust accreted at the East Pacific Rise and recovered at Hess Deep during IODP Leg 345 (Gillis et al., 2014a). Hess Deep is located at 2°15’N, 101°30’W in the Pacific Ocean, at the western tip of the Cocos-Nazca spreading centre, a westward-propagating oceanic ridge that progressively opens the oceanic lithosphere formed at the adjacent East Pacific Rise (Fig. 1a; Searle and Francheteau, 1986; Karson et al., 2002). Hess Deep is an East-West trending intraoceanic rift reaching 5200 mbsl (metres below sea level) at its deepest point (Fig. 1b,c). It is a tectonic window exposing a complete section of 1.3 Myr oceanic crust accreted at the fast-spreading East Pacific Rise (~130 mm/yr; Rioux et al., 2012; Rowan and Rowley, 2014), ranging from pillow basalts to sheeted dikes, isotropic gabbros, layered gabbros and troctolites, and upper mantle peridotites (e.g., Francheteau et al., 1990, 1992; Hekinian et al., 1993; Lissenberg et al., 2013). The gabbroic rocks included in this database are primitive in composition and range from olivine-rich troctolites to troctolites, olivine gabbros, olivine gabbronorites and gabbros.

    Beschreibung: Irpinia seismic Array is part of the DEnse mulTi-paramEtriC observations and 4D high resoluTion imaging (DETECT) project focused on the acquisition of a unique multiparametric dataset and fosters collaboration among various institutions. The University of Naples Federico II (UniNa) and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) are leading this effort carried out in collaboration with various local institutions and supported by the local municipalities. The DETECT project aims at exploiting very dense seismic networks deployed across a segmented fault system (Irpinia and Pergola-Melandro) to foster the development of scientific integrated methodologies for monitoring and imaging the fault behavior during the inter-seismic phase. The Irpinia seismic Array consists of a dense constellation of seismic antennas using more than 200 seismic stations deployed for one year. Each seismic antenna, with maximum aperture of ~2 km, uses one broad-band sensor, one short period sensor with 1 Hz and 8 with 4.5 Hz natural frequency. The antennas are deployed above and near the fault segments that generated during the last centuries many strong earthquakes in the southern Apennines.     Beschreibung: Understanding physical processes prior and during eruptions remains challenging, due to uncertainties about subsurface structures and undetected processes within the volcano. Here, the authors use a dedicated fibre-optic cable to obtain strain data and identify volcanic events and image hidden near-surface volcanic structural features at Etna volcano, Italy. In the paper Jousset et al. (2022), we detect and characterize strain signals associated with explosions, and we find evidences for non-linear grain interactions in a scoria layer of spatially variable thickness. We also demonstrate that wavefield separation allows us to incrementally investigate the ground response to various excitation mechanisms, and we identify very small volcanic events, which we relate to fluid migration and degassing. We recorded seismic signals from natural and man-made sources with 2-m spacing along a 1.5-km-long fibre-optic cable layout near the summit of actives craters of Etna volcano, Italy. Those results provide the basis for improved volcano monitoring and hazard assessment using DAS. This data publication contains the full data set used for the analysis. This data set comprises strain-rate data from 1 iDAS interrogator (~750 traces), velocity data from 15 geophones and 4 broadband seismometers, and infrasonic pressure data from infrasound sensors. For further explanation of the data and related processing steps, please refer to Jousset et al. (2022). Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 9N.

    Beschreibung: In January 2020, a swarm of earthquakes started under Thorbjorn volcano, Reykjanes, SW Iceland, associated to the uplift of up to 0.5 cm per day. Concern in Iceland was growing and the Iceland Meteorological Office suggested at that time that possibly magma intruded in the crust at shallow depth (3 to 9 km). The first eruption occurred on 19.03.2021, followed by many others in the foolwing years. The GFZ started a seismological Hazard and Risk Team (HART), as soon as February 2020 in cooperation with IMO, ISOR and the University of Iceland. The interrogator was located in Grindavik and was connected to a standard telecom cable. The full data dataset of this 5J network comprise 250 Tb of raw data. The standard infrastructure is not designed for such large data set. Therefore, we implement here several datasets, corresponding to several processing and associated publications. Specific full data set is available upon request to the authors. In Flovenz et al., 2022, the data subset comprise a selection of wave-forms recorded along an optical fibre of 21 km length. The subset consists of 40 channels at 100 Hz (spatially stacked 9x). The whole time period from January until August 2020 is covered, with a total size of 496 GB. The data is MiniSEED at 4096 bytes record length with STEIM2. In Maass et al., 2024, the data subset consists of two sections of contiguous channels (1701-2000 and 3921-4218, spatial sampling 4 meters) of dynamic strain rate down sampled at 5 Hz. The whole time period from January until August 2020 is covered, with a total size of 340 GB. The data is MiniSEED at 4096 bytes record length with STEIM2.

    Beschreibung: The Eifel Large-N Seismic Network is a concentric network of about 80km aperture around the Laacher See. Instrumentation consists of broad band seismometers, short period instruments (1Hz eigenfrequency) and 4.5Hz geophones. While the broadband and short period stations cover the area rather homogeneously for about 12 month, the geophone stations were moved after 6 month from a layout focussed on the closer vicinity of the Laacher See onto a line crossing the network from south-west to north-east with a dense station spacing. The goal of the experiment is the structural investigation of the feeding system of the East Eifel and a detailed study of the tectonic and volcanic seismic activity in this area.     Beschreibung: “Gakkel Deep is a pilot project that installed a network of four broadband ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) near Gakkel Deep, the deepest depression in the Arctic Ocean, at the eastern end of the ultraslow spreading Gakkel Ridge. The area is covered year-round by sea ice. In order to enable a safe recovery of the OBS in a sea ice covered ocean, the OBS were modified to include a positioning system that allows to track the instruments at meter accuracy during descent and ascent and when stuck beneath ice floes. This pilot studied aimed at testing the recovery procedure of the OBS, checking the performance of the modified instrument design, getting an overview of ambient seismic noise at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean and at contributing to a better understanding of the origin of the Gakkel Deep depression with more than 3000 m of topography. The network is shaped as a rectangle with 8 km and 10 km side length and is centered at about 82°N 119.5°E at water depths between 3600 m and 4100 m. It is positioned slightly to the east of the present plate boundary in an area with volcanic structures. Instruments from the German Instrument Pool of Amphibian Seismology (DEPAS) were deployed during RV Polarstern cruise PS115/2 on September 15, 2018. Instrument recovery was completed during RV Polarstern cruise PS122/1 on September 27, 2019. The data set contains about 377 days of continuous records at 250 Hz sample rate. The station locations were determined with Ultra Short Baseline (USBL) ranging, the accuracy is approx. 10 m. The non-linear clock drift was determined by means of noise cross-correlations and applied to the data set. Twenty generic analogue models are extended on top of a rubber sheet. Two benchmark experiments are also reported. Detailed descriptions of the experiments can be found in Liu et al. (submitted) to which this data set is supplement. The data presented here are visualized as topography and the horizontal cumulative surface strain (principal strain and slip rake).

    Beschreibung: A network of 210 continuously running, digital seismic stations equipped with short-period sensors (200 stations) and broadband sensors (10 stations) was deployed in an area of ~8 x ~6 km in the Irish Midlands (north of Collinstown) for a time period of ~6 weeks. The network was part of the EU project VECTOR (https://vectorproject.eu) aiming to investigate – among others – possible solutions for least invasive forms of exploration for mineral resources. In this context the collected data was mainly used to derive a 3D model of the subsurface (seismic shear wave velocity) using ambient noise tomography (down to ~1.5km depth). We thank all field crews for their excellent work rendered to the project. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 7W, and is embargoed until Feb 2025.

    Beschreibung: The model named EHFM_Earth_7200 was derived by layer-based forward modeling technique in ellipsoidal harmonics, the maximum degree of this model reaches 7200. The relief information was provided by Earth2014 relief model. EHFM_Earth_7200 provides very detailed (~3 km) information for the Earth’s short-scale gravity field, and it is expected to be able to augment or refine existing global gravity models. To meet the existing standard, here we provide spherical harmonic coefficients, which are transformed from original ellipsoidal harmonic coefficients. The maximum degree of the spherical harmonic coefficients is 7300.

    Beschreibung: - Compute global equiangular reduced latitude grids from degree 10800 Earth2014 SHCs and expanded these grids into EHCs. The grids are band-limited in spherical harmonics instead of in ellipsoidal harmonics so extra degrees beyond the truncation degree are also calculated. We obtained surface EHCs up to degree and order (d/o) 11000 but truncated them to d/o 7200. - Calculate potential models of three layers (crust, water and ice) separately from Earth2014 reliefs by new developed ellipsoidal harmonic forward modeling formulas. The densities of the three layers are 2670, 1030, and 917 kg/m^3. - Sum up results from the three layers and obtain EHFM_Earth_7200 ellipsoidal harmonic coefficients. - Convert ellipsoidal harmonic coefficients to spherical harmonic coefficients. The maximum degree of the spherical harmonic coefficients is 7300.

    Beschreibung: The Uruguayan gravimetric quasi-geoid model UruQGeoide110 was calculated by the Military Geographic Institute (IGM) in 2023. The extent is from 29.5° S to 35.5° S in latitude, and 52.5° W to 59.5° W in longitude, covering parts of Argentina and Brazil, with a grid resolution of 1´ x 1´. The geodetic reference system is SIRGAS ROU-98 (the reference ellipsoid is GRS80). The model is a combination of the EIGEN-6C4 geopotential model up to degree and order of 720, 10,429 land gravimetric stations plus 10,089 free air gravity anomalies in marine areas, based on the DTU13 model. The terrain data at the final 90 m resolution was taken from a 2017 Lidar survey in Uruguay with a 2.5 m initial resolution and SRTM (V2) for the external terrestrial data. The DT18 bathymetry model was used for the marine areas. Due to the total terrain data points (about 104 million), the overall area was divided into 4 overlapped blocks in the framework of the remove-compute-restore procedure. The reduced height anomalies were computed from the reduced gravity anomalies with Stokes 1D FFT and Wong Gore´s kernel modification (170-180 degrees) and the quasi-geoid model was finally obtained by adding back the residual terrain model effects and the contribution of the global geopotential model. The geoid model is provided in ISG format 2.0 (ISG Format Specifications), while the file in its original data format is available at the model ISG webpage.

    Beschreibung: The official Uruguayan geoid model, called IGM110, was calculated by the Military Geographic Institute (IGM) in 2023 and consists of a grid of 1´ x 1´ geoidal undulations with a total of 151,981 points. The geodetic reference system is SIRGAS ROU-98 (the reference ellipsoid is GRS80). The extent is from 29.5° S to 35.5° S in latitude, and 52.5° W to 59.5° W in longitude, covering parts of Argentina and Brazil. The model is a combination of the EIGEN-6C4 geopotential model up to degree and order of 720, 10,429 land gravimetric stations plus 10,089 free air gravity anomalies in marine areas, based on the DTU13 model. The terrain data at the final 90 m resolution was taken from a 2017 Lidar survey in Uruguay with a 2.5 m initial resolution and SRTM (V2) for the external terrestrial data. The DT18 bathymetry model was used for the marine areas. Due to the total terrain data points (about 104 million), the overall area was divided into 4 overlapped blocks in the framework of the remove-compute-restore procedure. The reduced height anomalies were computed from the reduced gravity anomalies with Stokes 1D FFT and Wong Gore´s kernel modification (170-180 degrees). After adding back the residual terrain model effects and the contribution of the global geopotential model, the obtained quasi-geoid was transformed into a geoid model via Bouguer anomalies, even if the difference between the two models is just a few mm. A comparison with 51 GNSS/levelling stations shows a standard deviation of 10 cm. The resulting geoid was also adapted by a bias and a tilt to the national vertical system, Cabildo 1948, by fitting GNSS/levelling observations, with a mean of 1 cm and a standard deviation of 7 cm.     Beschreibung: The Irish Seismological Lithospheric Experiment (ISLE) was originally designed to investigate the deep lithospheric and asthenospheric structure across the late-Caledonian Iapetus Suture Zone in southern Ireland. The project was a collaboration between the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), Ireland, and the Geophysical Institute (GPI) of the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. It was the first passive teleseismic experiment conducted in Ireland, building upon a large body of earlier work on the crustal structure offshore and onshore Ireland, based on controlled source seismics and potential field studies. The Irish Seismological Upper Mantle Experiment (ISUME) was a continuation of ISLE by DIAS to extend the data coverage to most of Ireland. Data are available at the GEOFON data centre under network code 1M.

    Beschreibung: The goal of the UPFLOW project is to develop new high-resolution seismic imaging approaches along with new data collection, and to use them to constrain upward flow in unprecedented detail. We conducted a large off-shore experiment in the Azores-Madeira-Canary Islands region, which is a unique natural laboratory with multiple upwellings that are poorly understood in general. UPFLOW deployed and recovered 49 ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs) in a ~1,000×2,000 km2 area in the Azores-Madeira-Canary Islands region starting in July 2021 for ~13 months, with an average spacing of ~150-200 km. The seismic deployment and recovery involved institutions from five different countries: Portugal (IPMA, IDL, Univ. of Lisbon, ISEL), Ireland (DIAS), UK (UCL), Spain (ROA) and Germany (Potsdam University, GFZ, Geomar, AWI). 32 OBSs were rented from the DEPAS international pool of instruments maintained by the Alfred Wegener Institute (Bremerhaven), Germany, while other institutions borrowed additional instruments (7 from DIAS, 4 from IDL, 3 from ROA, 4 from GEOMAR). Most of the instruments have three-component wideband seismic sensors, but three different designs of OBS frames were used. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 8J, and is embargoed until 4 years after publishing but may be accessible upon request. We want to acknowledge the exceptional support of the whole team of able seaman, steward, cooks, engineers, mechanicians, electricians and motorman assistants of the vessel RRV Mário Ruivo.     Beschreibung: 15 station seismological network spanning the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) toward the east of Ismetpasa to detect possible microseismicity and slow slip events in the creeping section of the NAFZ. The network consists of 10 three component 4.5 Hz geophone sensors in combination with DATACUBE3 recorders and five Trillium Horizon 120 broadband seismometers connected to Centaur data loggers. Geophone stations are buried at shallow depths while two of the broadband seismometers are installed in-house at basement level. The other three Trillium sensors are posthole installations in the field. The seismic network spans the same part of the NAFZ that is also monitored by a GNSS network installed by École Normale Supérieure (ENS) with two broadband seismometers being co-located with GNSS sensors. In addition, a set of creepmeters is installed close to Ismetpasa at the western end of the seismological network. The aim of the seismological study is twofold: a) Finding possible seismological expressions of the slow slip transients visible in the GNSS data and b) detecting microseismicity that is not listed in the regional Turkish earthquake catalogs based on seismological networks with much larger station spacing in the study area. The obtained results will hopefully give new insights into the seismological characteristics of a segment of a major continental transform fault capable of hosting M7 events but showing at the same time transient slow slip events and seismic creep.

    Beschreibung: Project SWEAP (Southwest Indian Ridge Earthquakes and Plumes), a collaborative effort led by the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, installed a network of 10 broad-band ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) along the ultraslow-spreading Oblique Supersegment of the Southwest Indian Ridge. The presented data set covers the continuous records of 8 stations of the network provided by the DEPAS instrument pool. One station of the original network could not be recovered, another one did not return data. The instruments were spaced at roughly 15 km intervals in a triangular shape network to either side of the rift axis covering about 60 km along axis between 13°E and 13.8°E and 60 km across axis between 52°S and 52.6°S. The determination of the OBS positions is described by Schmid et al. (2016). The network design was optimized for detecting and locating deep seismicity in the area. The rift valley was filled with soft silica ooze, producing considerable delay of S-phases at selected stations. Instrument deployment started during RV Polarstern cruise ANT-XXIX/2 on December 05 2012. Instrument recovery was completed during RV Polarstern cruise ANT-XXIX/8 on November 26 2013. 5 Refraction seismic lines were acquired by RV Polarstern cruise ANT-XXIX/8 from November 17 to 19 in 2013. All OBS could be synchronized with the GPS clock upon recovery such that skew values describing the clock drift are available for all stations. The non-linear clock drift of station SWE05 was determined by means of noise cross-correlations and applied to the data set. All other stations show a linear drift, which was corrected.

    Beschreibung: The STRATEGy network was a temporary seismic network in the NW Argentinean Andean Foreland. It run for about 15 months between June 2016 and August 2017 and consisted of 13 stations for the most parts. Each station contains a Lennartz LE3D/5s seismometer, an Omnirecs DataCube³ext digitizer (100 Hz sampling rate) with external GPS antenna and internal flash memory. Station 14A consisted of a Mark L-4C-3D short-period sensor. The power was supplied through an external batteries that were recharged during the day via a solar panel. The sensors were oriented to magnetic north. The header of the waveform files (NSLC-IDs) still remained in its prior form (network code ST) and haven’t been adapted to the FDSN given code. Station codes (double digits) were assigned from North to South. The last digit of the station code is either A (for their initial position of a station site) or B (the station has been moved during the networks operation time due to low quality recordings at the respective initial site). Each site was chosen on 3 criteria: (1) minimizing the depth to bedrock, (2) maximizing remoteness, and (3) maximizing security, preferentially located within sight of nearby settlements. However, one station (02A) was lost due to theft and many others experienced recording gaps due to animals chewing on cables, malfunctions of electrical parts and mainly flooding of the stations during the austral summer monsoon. The overall network geometry evolved partially due to accessibility of remote locations, maintaining similar interstation distances and focusing around the epicenter of the Mw 5.7 El Galpón earthquake 9 months prior to the network’s starttime. The smallest depths to bedrock were achieved by concentrating the sites around two major bedrock ranges and their piedmont, Cerro Colorado and Sierra de la Candelaria.     Beschreibung: Continuous passive seismic monitoring is carried out between September 2017 and December 2021 around the Theistareykir geothermal area located at the intersection between the active Northern Rift Zone and the active Tjörnes Fracture Zone in NE Iceland. This experiment, in addition to an extensive gravimetric monitoring survey, was conducted in the framework of the MicroGraviMoTiS project for a better understanding of the structures and behavior of the local geothermal system under exploitation and for further development of local and regional geothermal resources. 14 broadband stations (Trillium C-120s) recording at 200 Hz comprise the temporary network, that is installed to complement stations of the national seismological network of IMO and stations of Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company of Iceland. The stations were placed in and around the producing zone to primarily retrieve local natural and/or induced seismicity associated to the injection and production operations. The retrieved seismic data is also used for obtaining a representative 1D velocity model of the region, for computing a seismic ambient noise tomography, and for monitoring the system using coda wave interferometry techniques. Funding for this project is provided by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (MicroGraviMoTiS , BMBF, grant: 03G0858A), the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and Landsvirkjun.     Beschreibung: Geophysical section of Dublin institute for Advanced studies is a publicly funded (government) academic research organization that develop new methods for studying the earth. In this project we are trying to develop new environmentally friendly ways to monitoring ground integrity. The idea is to use ground vibrations from natural and man-made sources, that already exist in everyday life for monitoring ground integrity. Here we would like to see if ground vibrations made by passing trains can be used to determine the integrity of the ground beneath the train track itself. This project involves the recording and analysis in detail the seismic vibrations generated by trains in order to better understand the proprieties of the waves propagating from the railway trough the shallow underground.     Beschreibung: From June to August 2021 the DEEPEN project deployed a dense seismic network across the Hengill geothermal area in southwest Iceland to image and characterize faults and high-temperature zones at high resolution. The nodal network comprised 498 geophone nodes spread across the northern Nesjavellir and southern Hverahlíð geothermal fields and was complemented by an existing permanent and temporary backbone seismic network of a total of 44 short-period and broadband stations. In addition, two fiber optic telecommunication cables near the Nesjavellir geothermal power plant were interrogated with commercial DAS-interrogators. The here published dataset contains a subset of the downsampled DAS-recordings from the western fiber optic array. The original data were downsampled from 2000Hz to 250 Hz using the das-convert tool (https://doi.org/10.5880/GFZ.2.1.2021.005). Note that there was a problem with the GNSS timing in the original recorded data which caused significant temporal drift. This has mostly been corrected in the downsampled data, but some residual timing error may exist. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 1D, and is fully open.

    Beschreibung: The ability to use geothermal resources to generate heat in urban areas where the demand is greatest has the potential to significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and to support sustainable energy policies. Potential deep geothermal resources in challenging, lower-enthalpy EU settings remain poorly understood and largely untapped. The GEO-URBAN project aims to explore the potential for low enthalpy geothermal in urban environments. The project will focus on two target locations – Dublin, Ireland and Vallès, Spain – and will provide a feasibility analysis for the commercial development of deep geothermal resources in these regions. The overall objective of GEO-URBAN is to identify the geothermal resources available in two challenging urban locations and to demonstrate a commercialisation strategy that has the potential to be adapted in other similar locations.
