    The International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) | India

    Description: Yemaya No. 63, dated May 2021, features articles from US, The Netherlands, Myanmar, Senegal, and an article on women in fisheries and human rights. The article from the US by Linda Behnken argues that a growing coalition of small-scale, community-based fishers is calling for the recognition and protection of Alaska’s invaluable coastal fisheries during COVID-19. The article from the Netherlands by Cornelie Quist looks at the challenges facing women engaged in small-scale fishing and supplying fish through retailers and how they found new ways to directly reach consumers. The conversation between Miranda Bout and Cornelie Quist focuses on how they combined new product development with the use of social media to contact their customer base during the pandemic-induced disruption of traditional marketing chains. The article by Elena Finkbeiner, Juno Fitzpatrick and Whitney Yadao-Evans looks at recent media revelations and scientific research that have brought increased attention to human-rights violations and the myriad social issues facing fisheries, but with a disproportionate focus on labour-rights violations at sea and in industrial fishing operations. The systemic inequalities combined with the effects of COVID-19 exacerbated vulnerabilities of women to health risks, food and livelihood security. The article from Senegal by Aby Dia from Lumière Synergie pour le Développement (LSD), in collaboration with WoMin African Alliance, South Africa, narrates the story of traditional women fish processors from the Bargny who have been, for more than a decade, struggling against development projects that jeopardise their environment, health and livelihoods. In order to preserve their livelihoods, women processors in Senegal have come together to oppose the Tosyali steel project. The European Network of Women in Fisheries and Aquaculture in Europe (AKTEA) urges the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries to integrate gender into all aspects of European fishing policy. The Profile column looks at how Linda Behnken became a fisher in Alaska and how fishing has shaped her individuality and work. Natalie Sattler says that fishing for halibut, sablefish and salmon from the sparkling waters of the Pacific along with her children and at the same time passion for working with the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association and the Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust is an immense challenge.

    Description: Las pesquerías basadas en las agregaciones reproductivas pueden amenazar a especies como los pargos que tienen conductas gregarias durante el período reproductivo. Esta nota ofrece elementos que sugieren la existencia de sitios de agregación no registrados previamente y no protegidos en el Parque Nacional Cayos de San Felipe (PNCSF), región suroccidental de Cuba. La información tradicional obtenida de pescadores locales y trabajadores del parque se corroboró con muestreos cualitativos y cuantitativos de peces de arrecifes y datos de pesquerías locales del 2014. En la época de reproducción de pargos (mayo a julio) se observaron grupos de entre 40-100 ejemplares de Lutjanus cyanopterus, Lutjanus synagris y Lutjanus jocu en los arrecifes de la zona occidental del PNCSF (camellones entre 15-30 m de profundidad cerca del borde de la plataforma). Dentro de esa área, se señalan dos sitios que parecen ser utilizados para agregaciones de predesove, por lo que requieren protección y ser estudiados. Los censos cuantitativos confirmaron que en mayo y junio la zona occidental tiene densidad alta de pargos adultos. También, el pico de captura de estas especies ocurrió en la época reproductiva. Se comprobó que las pesquerías se realizaron durante las migraciones de peces hacia el borde de la plataforma en áreas de la zona occidental del PNCSF, y que más del 60% de los individuos tuvieron gónadas maduras (antes de desovar). Esta información debe incentivar el estudio de las agregaciones de desove en esta región de Cuba, la protección de especies amenazadas y áreas de alta significación ecológica y la implementación de pesquerías sostenibles.
    Description: Fisheries based on reproductive aggregations can threaten species such as snappers that have gregarious behavior during the reproductive period. This note provides evidence to support the existence of aggregation sites, not previously registered and unprotected, in the National Park San Felipe Keys (NPSFK), southwestern region of Cuba. Traditionalinformation obtained from local fishermen and from the park staff was complemented with qualitative and quantitative fish reef censuses and local fisheries data in 2014. In the reproductive season of snappers (May to July) groups of between 40-100 specimens of Lutjanus cyanopterus, Lutja- nus synagris and Lutjanus jocu were observed in the western area of the NPSFK on the reefs (spoor and grove between 20-30 m deep close to the platform edge). Within that area two sites are indicated that can be used for prespawning aggregation, so they require protection and study. Quanti- tative censuses confirmed that in May and June the western zone has high density of adult snappers. Also, the peak of capture of these snapper species occurred in the reproduc- tive season. It was found that fisheries carried out during fish migrations to the edge of the shelf in areas of the western area of the NPSFK and more than 60% of the individuals had mature gonads (before spawning). This information should promote the study of spawning aggregations in this region of Cuba, the protection of threatened species and areas of high ecological significance and the implementation of sustainable fisheries.

    Description: The ICES Workshop on ICES reference points (WKREF2) was tasked review the WKREF1 report and based on the outcome develop updated guidelines for the ICES reference points system and recommendations for ACOM consideration. The WKREF1 report has suggested 5 key recom- mendations to simplify and harmonise the ICES reference points framework representing a ma- jor change to the current guidelines. At WKREF2, we detailed discussions and four key concerns were raised about the proposed approach. The first related to the simplification of rules to define Blim. Around two thirds of category 1 stocks would end up as WKREF1 “Blim Type 2” where Blim would be set as a fraction of B0. The Allee effect or “depensation” maybe more important than previously thought and should be furthered explored for ICES stocks since it has important consequences for Blim. A number of challenges and issues around defining Blim using the current guidelines were documented. Some suggestions on improvement criteria were discussed including using classifiers to define spas- modic stocks and using change point algorithms to address non-stationary productivity regimes. However, further work is need to make these approaches operational and there was no consen- sus that the WKREF1 Blim types should replace the current guidelines. WKREF1 recommended that the FMSY proxy should be based on a biological proxies and should be less than the deterministic FMSY. It was pointed out that the stochastic FMSY estimated in EqSim for example, is lower than the deterministic FMSY and that the current guidelines ensure that the FMSY should not pose a more than 5% risk to Blim. A large amount of work described in WD 1 was carried out to develop an MSE framework to consistency and robustness test a candidate refer- ence point system for North East Atlantic stocks. However, WKREF2 recommended that further work needs to be carried out to condition and test the simulation framework before the conclu- sions could be adopted by ICES and incorporated into the guidelines. A number of considerations for defining MSY related reference points were discussed including using model validation and prediction skill to ensure that ICES provide robust and credible ad- vice. There is evidence that density dependence (DD) is important in the majority of ICES stocks (68% in recruitment and 54% in growth). The correct prediction of the shape and strength of density-dependence in productivity is key to predicting future stock development and providing the best possible long-term fisheries management advice. A suggested approach to use surplus production models (SPMs) to account for DD in FMSY was suggested and discussed but there was no consensus on whether that approach was appropriate. There was consensus that the FECO approach as a means of adapting target fishing mortality to medium-term changes in productiv- ity should be included in the guidelines subject to a benchmark and ACOM approval. While WKREF1 and 2 focused mainly on Category 1 stocks ToR c) called for a “simplified and harmonised set of guidelines for estimating MSY and precautionary reference points applicable in the advice framework across various ICES stock categories.” Ideally the ICES assessment cat- egories should provide equivalent risk across all stocks. This issue was discussed but no recom- mendations emerged. There was no consensus a revised reference point framework was proposed at WKREF2. How- ever, it was agreed that it should be presented here for further discussion at ACOM and other fora. The key feature of the suggested approach is that the stock status evaluation is treated in- dependent of the Advice Rule (AR). The main feature of the system is that the biomass trigger is not linked to a stock status evaluation, it is linked to the expected biomass when fishing at the target fishing mortality, in contrast to the current ICES approach. It also entailed that FMSY would also become an upper limit of fishing mortality and that the advised fishing mortality would be set at or lower than that level. WKREF2 did not discuss what to do in situations where SSB〈 Blim or alternative forms of HCR for the advice rule. Building community understanding and con- sensus around simplified and harmonised guidelines has yet to be achieved. A further workshop WKREF3 will be required to achieve that aim. The report includes 6 recommendations for ACOM consideration.

    Description: The main objective of the workshop was to review the recommendations of WKREF1 and con- sider how these might feed into a new reference points framework and guidelines for ICES. There were a number of presentations on the wider issues of best practice for reference points, the Allee effect, density dependence and the WKIRISH approach. The starting point was to try and develop a set of simplified and harmonised guidelines based on the WKREF1 report rather than evolving the current guidelines to include the WKREF1 conclusions. A key aspect of the meeting was to allow for discussions in order to build a shared understanding of the strengths and weakness of the current framework and of the new framework emerging from WKREF1.

    Description: The ocean's mesopelagic zone (200–1000 m) remains one of the most understudied parts of the ocean despite knowledge that mesopelagic fishes are highly abundant. Apex predators from the surface waters are known to consume these fishes, constituting an important ecological interaction. Some countries have begun exploring the potential harvest of mesopelagic fishes to supply fishmeal and fish oil markets due to the high fish abundance in the mesopelagic zone compared with overfished surface waters. This study explored the economic and ecological implications of a moratorium on the harvest of mesopelagic fishes such as lanternfish off the US West Coast, one of the few areas where such resources are managed. We adapted a bioeconomic decision model to examine the tradeoffs between the values gained from a hypothetical mesopelagic fishery with the potential values lost from declines in predators of mesopelagic fishes facing a reduced prey resource. The economic rationale for a moratorium on harvesting mesopelagics was sensitive both to ecological relationships and the scale of the nonmarket values attributed to noncommercial predators. Using a California Current-based ecological simulation model, we found that most modeled predators of mesopelagic fishes increased in biomass even under high mesopelagic harvest rates, but the changes (either increases or decreases) were small, with relatively few predators responding with more than a 10% change in their biomass. While the ecological simulations implied that a commercial mesopelagic fishery might not have large biomass impacts for many species in the California Current system, there is still a need to further explore the various roles of the mesopelagic zone in the ocean.

    Description: Canada has undertaken commitments to recognize the rights of Indigenous Peoples in fisheries through policies and agreements, including Integrated Fishery Management Plans, the Reconciliation Strategy, and Land Claim Agreements (LCAs). In addition to recognizing rights, these commitments were intended to respect geographic adjacency principles, to enhance the economic viability of Indigenous communities, and to be reflective of community dependence on marine resources. We examined the determinants of quota allocations in commercial fisheries involving Nunatsiavut, Northern Labrador, the first self-governing region for the Inuit peoples in Canada. It has been argued that current fishery allocations for Nunatsiavut Inuit have not satisfied federal commitments to recognize Indigenous rights. Indicators that measure equity in commercial allocations for the turbot or Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) and northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) fisheries were identified and assessed. In these two cases, historical allocations continue to predominate for allocations based upon equity or other social or economic considerations. We illustrate equity-enhancing changes in the quota distribution under scenarios of different levels of inequality aversion, and we make qualitative assessments of the effects of these allocations to Nunatsiavut for socioeconomic welfare. This approach could benefit fisheries governance in Northern Labrador, where federal commitments to equity objectives continue to be endorsed but have not yet been integrated fully into quota allocations.

    Description: The ocean twilight zone (more formally known as the mesopelagic zone) plays a fundamental role in global climate. It is the mid-ocean region roughly 100 to 1000 meters below the surface, encompassing a half-mile deep belt of water that spans more than two-thirds of our planet. The top of the ocean twilight zone only receives 1% of incident sunlight and the bottom level is void of sunlight. Life in the ocean twilight zone helps to transport billions of metric tons (gigatonnes) of carbon annually from the upper ocean into the deep sea, due in part to processes known as the biological carbon pump. Once carbon moves below roughly 1000 meters depth in the ocean, it can remain out of the atmosphere for centuries to millennia. Without the benefits of the biological carbon pump, the atmospheric CO 2 concentration would increase by approximately 200 ppm 1 which would significantly amplify the negative effects of climate change that the world is currently trying to curtail and reverse. Unfortunately, existing scientific knowledge about this vast zone of the ocean, such as how chemical elements flow through its living systems and the physical environment, is extremely limited, jeopardizing the efforts to improve climate predictions and to inform fisheries management and ocean policy development.

    Description: This paper summarizes the results of the experiments on the induced breeding and larval rearing of milkfish (Chanos chanos) during the 1979 season. Milkfish larvae could be reared successfully without the use of trochophore larvae of oysters as feed during the first few days. In order to induce the ovulation of wild adult milkfish a higher dose of human chorionic gonadotropin hormone is required.

    Description: Round scad exploration by purse seine in the waters of western Philippines was conducted from April 22 to May 7, 1998 for a period of five (5) fishing days with a total catch of 7.3 tons and an average of 1.5 tons per setting. Dominant species caught were Decapterus spp. having 70.09% of the total catch, followed by Selar spp. at 12.66% and Rastrelliger spp. 10.70%. Among the Decapterus spp. caught, D. macrosoma attained the highest total catch composition by species having 68.81% followed by D. kurroides and D.russelli with 0.31% and 1.14% respectively. The round scad fishery stock was composed mainly of juvenile fish (less than 13 cm) and Age group II (13 cm to 14 cm). Few large round scad at Age group IV and V (20 cm to 28 cm) stayed at the fishery. Other fishes caught were: Auxis rochei (0.85%), A. thazard (0.12%), Caranx spp. (0.45%), Emmilichthys nitidus (0.58%), Euthynnus affinis (0.42%), Leiognathus ruconius (0.58%), Loligo sp. (0.31%), Megalaspis cordyla (0.09%), Rastrelliger spp. (10.70%), Sardinella longiceps (0.03%), Scomberoides lysan (0.24%), Selar spp. (12.66%), Sphyraena spp. (0.90%), Thunnus albacares (0.96%) and others (1.02%). Tuna and tuna like fishes such as yellowfin tuna, eastern little tuna, bullet tuna, frigate tuna and oceanic squid are distributed in the upper latitudes of the survey area. On the other hand, round scads, big-eyed scads and Indian mackerels are dominantly present in the lower latitudes of the survey area.

    Description: An exploratory tuna longline fishing survey was conducted using the research and training vessels of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, the 1,178 GT MV SEAFDEC and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the 165 GT MV MAYA-MAYA in the South China Sea Waters, West of the Philippines from April to May, 1998. A total of 3,796 hooks was set in sixteen (16) fishing stations. There were no tuna caught during the entire survey but only minor and irrelevant species like the Pacific lancetfish, sharks and an opah species, Lampris guttatus. The important fishing and oceanographic factors during the survey and other research results on longline are described and analyzed. Additional longline studies within and near the Philippines territorial waters are also presented to substantiate the research results of the joint SEAFDEC/BFAR resource exploratory.

    Description: Cholera is an acute specific infection caused by the organism, Vibrio cholera. Diagnosis may be confirmed by the presence of large numbers of the comma-shaped bacilli on direct microscopic examination of a fecal or vomitus smear, and by the isolation of the organism on culture. Fish and shellfish have been identified as vehicles of cholera. Large numbers of V. cholera must usually be ingested to cause cholera. Thus problems often occur when poor handling and inadequate refrigeration have allowed the organism to multiply. Presented in the paper is the methodology of determining the presence of Vibrio cholera in fish and fishery products.

    Description: Fishery statistics in Brunei Darussalam have been collected by the Department of Fisheries since the 1940s. In the early 1980s, a number of statistics were collected, such as catch and effort data of artisanal fishermen, aquaculture statistics, processing statistics as well as data from major wet markets focusing on the amount, prices of marketed fish either from the local fishermen or imported. In 1984, the collection of statistics on commercial fishing was started. The statistics have been used in the formulation of fishery management and development policies as well as for sectoral development. Following a brief account of the responsibility and statistic collections of the Department of Fisheries, an examination is made of employment in the fishery sector, fisheries production, fish marketed and the GDP for the fishery industry. Fisheries in Brunei Darussalam is a very healthy industry, where production is well below the maximum allowable harvestable limit of 20,000 tons at 30%. The Department is embarking to increase production from the capture fishery to reduce the country's dependence on imported fish; the same applies for aquaculture, in order to complement production from the capture fisheries. The processing sector is also increasing in importance, especially with the increase in the number of capture fishery licenses, and the demand for quality and value-added products.

    Description: Food poisoning due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a food-borne infection resulting from the ingestion of a large number of this organism (about 106-109 viable cells). The major symptoms are diarrhea and abdominal pain with headache, fever, and vomiting also occurring. The organisms are excreted during the acute stage of the illness after which they decrease rapidly. The differentiation of V. parahaemolyticus from other pathogenic species of Vibrio is based mainly on salt tolerance, Voges-Proskauer reaction, fermentation of sucrose, and growth at 43°C. Presented in the paper is the methodology of determining the presence of Vibrio cholera in fish and fishery products.

    Notes: In 1954 Becker found that the components of a gas mixture could be separated by allowing a jet of the gas mixture to expand in a low-pressure chamber. The heavier molecules would concentrate near the center of the jet and the lighter ones near the edge. Thus the jet could be split into two streams, one containing more of the heavy component and one containing more of the light component. In this paper it will be shown that this effect can be predicted from the kinetic theory of gases and that the predicted magnitude of the effect agrees favorably with the experimental data of Becker.

    Notes: From studies of annular packed beds wherein the heat flows purely radially, the authors obtained the coefficients of heat transfer on the inner tube surface, as well as the mean effective thermal conductivities of bed. The inner and outer diameters of the annular packed bed were 22 and 70 mm. respectively, and the packings shown in Table 1 were used. The wall film coefficients obtained with air flowing axially through the bed were correlated for NReM 〈 600 by means of Equation (14).The coefficients of heat transfer for cylindrical packed beds reported previously by other observers were correlated also by Equation (14), with 0.054 used for values of αω in the range NReM 〈 2,000.Consideration of Equation (14) in terms of a theoretical model of heat transfer showed that it was reasonable to apply it for the prediction of wall film coefficient, especially for low Reynolds numbers.

The vapor-pressure data are presented in the form of the Antoine equation, and the P-V-T data together with the vapor-pressure data have been fitted to the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation of state.

    Notes: The behavior of type-304 stainless steel in a forced-convection closed-loop lithium system was investigated over a wide range of temperatures and velocities. Fundamental information concerning the mechanism for mass transport has been obtained by examining solution and deposition effects along flat plates. The rate-determining process for solution is transport from the solid to the interface, whereas deposition rates are liquid-phase controlled.Liquid-phase mass transfer coefficients were correlated with a maximum deviation of approximately 15% by the use of von Kàrmàn's analysis of the turbulent boundary layer along a flat plate, combined with the Chilton-Colburn empirical modification of the Schmidt group. In contrast no adequate model is available for the prediction of solution rate constants which must be determined experimentally. Mean values of the solution rate constants ranged from 0.154 to 0.750 × 10-5 cm./sec. at temperatures from 510° to 612°C. These values are on the order of 103 smaller than corresponding liquid-phase mass transfer coefficients.

    Notes: A study was made of the deviation between the temperature of thermocouple junctions and the temperature of the fluid surrounding them which arises as a result of conduction along the thermocouple leads. Measurements around a 1/2-in. heated sphere in the plane of the equator normal to an air stream having a velocity of 16 ft./sec. were made with a 0.001-in.-diam. thermocouple of platinum and platinum rhodium. Air temperatures in the boundary flows of the sphere were predicted from the indications of the thermocouple. The method of prediction employed also determined the heat transfer coefficients for the thermocouple wire in the boundary layer. These local heat transfer coefficients are lower than those observed in a uniform stream having a velocity equal to the estimated local velocity in the boundary layer.

    Notes: A first approximation to the multicomponent plate-efficiency problem has been carried out with a film model combined with equations for steady state diffusion in a ternary gas mixture. Numerical integration of the equations through a plate yields the ternary efficiencies as functions of the binary efficiency.The effects of diffusional interactions in a distillation column were studied by computing the efficiencies on each plate when a column is designed to separate a ternary mixture. In the example studied, the average column efficiency was 39% less than the binary efficiency.Some criteria are suggested for comparing other multicomponent systems to the one studied in order to estimate the uncertainty in the use of binary correlations for these systems.

    Notes: A new correlation is presented for predicting the pressure-volume temperature relations of nonpolar (and slightly polar) gases. The correlation modifies the law of corresponding states in which a third parameter, the slope of the pseudocritical isometric in dimensionless form, is introduced. This parameter is introduced in a simple manner by multiplying the reduced pressure and temperature of the gas by a factor which can be easily calculated or read from a graphs. This gives the corrected reduced pressure and temperature which can then be used with a generalized compressibility factor chart in place of the true values. The correlation is accurate for densities up to about 1.2 times the critical density.A detailed comparison of the method with data on twelve pure gases showed that by introducing this parameter into the law of corresponding states the average error was decreased from 1.598 to 0.320%. The parameter S can readily be determined from experimental PVT data, and only one isotherm is required. S is related to the vapor-pressure curve for a substance as characterized by the critical pressure and the ratio of the critical temperature to the normal boiling temperature, and a simple method is proposed for predicting S when no experimental data are available.A new set of generalized compressibility factor and fugacity to pressure ratio charts is presented for use with the proposed correlation. A method is also presented for determining the thermodynamics functions.

When geometry and solids concentration are held constant, both phenomena are found to be controlled by similar dimensionless groupings of power per unit volume, density, and relative velocity between the fluid and particle.     Notes: Experimental data, believed accurate within ±0.5%, are presented for pressures of 100 to 8,000 Ib./sq. in. abs. for nine temperatures from 77° to 280°F. One isotherm, within 1° of the critical, indicates the detail required in further investigation of the critical region. These data were combined with the available literature values to prepare a table of recommended viscosity values with maximum uncertainty of ±2% for temperatures from 70° to 460°F. Two generalized correlations and the Enskog viscosity theory for dense gases exhibit significant errors in predicting the data. Methods are suggested for extrapolation of the values to higher temperatures and pressures.

Detonation and impact characteristics were computed for essentially the same range of conditions by the use of the elementary theory of detonation. Equilibrium compositions of hydrogen-oxygen mixtures at pressures from 10 to 2,000 atm. and temperatures from 3,000 to 5,000°K. were included in the computations and have been filed with the American Documentation Institute. The effect of nonideal thermodynamic properties on the computed detonation velocities was considered.

    Notes: Liquid-liquid extraction of acetic acid from the methyl isobutyl ketone-water system was studied as a function of plate wetting characteristics and other variables in a pulsed perforated-plate extraction column.Various combinations of stainless steel plates and polyethylene plates were used with different directions of solute transfer at a constant throughput of 82.6 lb. total flow/(min.) (sq. ft. column area) and with other operating variables in the following range:Frequency  -  16 to 117.1 c./min.Amplitude  -  0.492 and 0.973 in.W/K flow ratio  -  0.46 to 2.8 lb. water/lb. ketoneThe plate wetting characteristics were found to affect the column extraction efficiency when the solute transfer was from the continuous ketone phase to water. An all polyethylene plate arrangement provided the best efficiency (H. T. U.oc = 4.1 in.) while an all stainless steel plate arrangement was less efficient (H. T. U.oc = 6.1 in.) under the most favorable operating conditions. A combination of these two arrangements in the column produced efficiencies midway between the all-plastic plate arrangement and the all-stainless steel plate arrangement.Within the column flooding limits the extraction efficiency did not seem to be affected by the plate wetting characteristics when the solute transfer was from water to the continuous ketone phase.

    Notes: Heat transfer and pressure-drop measurements were made with non-Newtonian aqueous thorium oxide suspensions. A comparison of the results of the two different kinds of measurement allowed the general features of non-Newtonian thorium oxide suspension heat transfer to be readily identified, thus leading to a clear understanding of anomalies observed in previous suspension heat transfer studies.Data were obtained at suspension concentrations up to 0.10 volume fraction solids, (1,000 g. of thorium/kg. of water) in systems having tube diameters of 0.318 and 1.030 in. In addition laminar-flow data were taken with a capillary-tube viscometer with a tube diameter of 1/8 in. and an L/D of 1,000. It was shown that laminar flow physical properties determined with the 1/8 in. diameter tube were satisfactory for correlating data taken with tubes up to 1.030 in. in diameter.Until the present study information was not available which would permit a choice between two different viscosities for use in correlating non-Newtonian turbulent heat transfer and flow data. The limiting viscosity at very high shear rates is shown to give a unique correlation of turbulent data for tube diameters from 0.124 to 1.030 in., whereas the use of the effective viscosity (that is the viscosity evaluated at the point value of the wall shear stress corresponding to each given flow condition) gives a pronounced diameter effect in turbulent-flow correlations.The data show that the onset of turbulence for both the pressure-drop and heat transfer measurements occurs at the same Reynolds number and is approximated by the value predicted by the Hedstrom criterion (II). The heat transfer transition region extends to Reynolds numbers a factor of four times greater than the critical, as is also the case with Newtonian materials. Heat transfer to thorium oxide slurries in fully developed turbulent flow is the same as that predicted by the usual correlations for Newtonian fluids to within the precision of the experimental data, provided that the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers are calculated with the limiting viscosity at high rates of shear, η, for this viscosity. An approximate form of Martinelli's momentum heat transfer analogy correlates the experimental results within +17 and -36%.

    Notes: By means of a moveable sensing probe previously described2 local shell-side heat transfer coefficients and friction losses were measured on a model tubular heat exchanger containing orifice baffles. The heat exchanger shell was 6-in. nominal I.D. and 45 in. in length and contained four tubes in triangular arrangement passing through orifice baffles. Baffle hole diameters of 1-/16, 1-2/16, 1-3/16, and 1-5/16 in. and baffle spacings of 4.0 and 9.0 in. were studied. Data were taken at several air flow rates for each of the four baffle hole diameters.The average heat transfer coefficient for the region between two central baffles was correlated with an empirical equation based on only two baffle spacings.An increase in the baffle-to-tube clearance caused a decrease in heat transfer. An increase in the baffle spacing also resulted in a decrease in heat transfer. Four flow zones in the baffle space are postulated from the analysis of Nusselt number distribution along the tube. The heat transfer characteristics in each of the four flow zones were analyzed in terms of the mechanism of the fluid flow.The pressure-drop data were correlated in terms of an annular orifice coefficient of discharge and an orifice-pressure-drop function. As a result of this study a method was developed by which one can predict the average of the local coefficients at the baffle position from the knowledge of pressure drop across a single baffle.

    Notes: The paper reports fundamental observations on the effect which stirring of fluidized solids has on the pressure drop. Typical power requirements are also given.The experimental pilot unit was of 6-in. diameter and 12 in. high. A special blade or paddle type of stirrer had been built which permitted the evaluation of the effects of blade positioning, blade spacing relative to sense of rotation, as well as the effect of stirrer immersion and rotational speed.The observations disclosed that blade positioning relative to sense of rotation had a very profound effect on pressure drop as well as on power requirements. When the solids circulation pattern as normally induced by the stirrer was of the same general character as that ordinarily encountered in a dense phase fluidized charge, the resulting pressure drop was always considerably lower than the conventional unstirred fluidized bed pressure drop. Furthermore for this type of stirrer the power requirements were also lowest. For other stirrer designs and other induced solids convection patterns the pressure drop was less influenced and the power requirements were much greater.The solids used for the study were a relatively coarse silica sand for which both pressure drop as well as power requirement data were reported. Power requirement data were also obtained for a much finer alumina powder.     Notes: This study deals with boundary-layer flow on continuous solid surfaces. Flow of this type represents a new class of boundary-layer problems, with solutions substantially different from those for boundary-layer flow on surfaces of finite length. In this paper the boundary-layer behavior on continuous surfaces is examined, and the basic differential and integral momentum equations of boundary-layer theory are derived for such surfaces. In subsequent papers these equations will be solved for the boundary layer on a moving continuous flat surface and a moving continuous cylindrical surface, for both laminar and turbulent flow in the boundary layer.

    Notes: An experimental study of superposed free and forced convection for air in a horizontal tube is reported. The laminar Nusselt number, based on the log mean temperature difference, ranged from 29.9 to 15.2; the laminar flow Graetz number, based on the bulk or average temperature of the air, ranged from 33 to 1,300, the Grashof-Prandtl modulus based on properties of air at the wall temperature ranged from 1.1 × 106 to 2.2 × 106. The Grashof number utilized the log mean temperature difference. An analysis of the system from a macroscopic viewpoint led to the determination of an equation which fits the laminar flow experimental data in the range of Graetz numbers from 60 to 1,300. An equation was also found for the turbulent data.

    Notes: The analytical solution to the equation of motion is given for the steady laminar flow of a uniformly conducting incompressible non-Newtonian fluid between two parallel planes. The fluid is under the influence of a constant pressure gradient and is subjected to a steady magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of motion. Two non-Newtonian models are considered: the Bingham plastic model and the power-law model. Flow rates and the velocity profiles for various values of the Hartmann number and the generalized Hartmann number are presented and compared with those corresponding to Newtonian fluids.

    Notes: The effect of mass transfer resistance in reducing the effectiveness of porous catalysts has been known since the publication of Thiele's classical paper in 1939. The variation in temperature caused by resistance to heat transfer may bring about equally significant changes in effectiveness in some cases. An extension of Thiele's treatment to take exact account of heat transfer resistance leads to a set of nonlinear differential equations that can only be solved numerically.This paper presents an approximate treatment of the simulataneous effects of resistances to mass and heat transfer. With the limitations imposed by linearizing the equations the formulas derived give the activity and selectivity for any combination of reactions. The use of the results is illustrated by three examples. It is shown that the principal effects are associated with the variation of concentration within the pellet of catalyst and with the difference in temperature between the surface of the pellet and the bulk fluid.

Measurements were made of the particle concentration, or holdup, existing in the column as a function of the fluid and particle flow rates for two particle sizes, 0.0184- and 0.00396-in. diameter glass spheres. The experimental results form the basis for a prediction of the generalized characteristics of concurrent cogravity fluidization.The data for each particle size are correlated in terms of the slip velocity and the holdup. The slip velocity is demonstrated to be the same unique function of the holdup for concurrent cogravity flow and for batch fluidization. Therefore the holdup and the conditions of limiting operation for concurrent cogravity flow can be accurately predicted from the batch fluidization curve.

    Notes: Previous investigators have developed general integrations of the Nernst-Planck flux equations to predict the behavior of ion exchange membranes in forced diffusion cells. These results are also applicable to stagnant liquid films, since this latter case can be considered as a membrane with a vanishingly small concentration of fixed charges (1). However these general integrations yield results of considerable complexity, and even the analysis of a specific system becomes a problem of some scope. This paper is based upon a much less general integration which proceeds by a straightforward manipulation of the Nernst-Planck flux equations for the special case of a single one-to-one electrolyte. The results are used to predict the behavior of a system consisting of a membrane with a stagnant film of liquid on either side. To further facilitate understanding the initial results are further simplified by assuming certain specific systems and then constructing plots showing the membrane efficiency in terms of readily interpreted, commonly encountered variables such as thicknesses, currents, and concentrations.

    Notes: A Burnett type of apparatus for the study of the volumetric behavior of gases at low temperatures and high pressures was constructed. The apparatus was used to study the volumetric behavior of methane and four mixtures of hydrogen and methane from +50° to -200°F. and pressures as high as 7,000 lb./sq. in.The experimental data were used to obtain the second virial coefficients for pure methane and for the mixtures. The results of approximately 600 experimental points were used to obtain a table of compressibility factors for methane and the mixtures at even increments of pressure and temperture.

    Notes: The growing availability of fast, large memory digital computers has made it practical to consider the physical implementation of control system designs incorporating appropriate strategies for automatic process optimization. The control system is taken to consist of the process to be optimized together with the interconnected digital computer. The control strategy is realized in the program of the digital computer. In the present paper a number of such programs or algorithms are discussed for carrying out a search of the possible settings of the process input (independent) variables in such a way as to locate an extremal of the possible values of a chosen objective function. The magnitude of these variables is determined from measurements taken of the dependent variables in the process. It is shown that for the particular process used as an example it is desirable to alter the search strategy as the optimization proceeds in order to locate the extremal in a minimum amount of time. The emphasis at the beginning of the search is on speed in moving towards the optimum and at the end on accuracy.Further, a computational technique is described whereby the dynamic response of the process to the various search steps (or settings) is under time-optimal control. This procedure is important for the fast execution of the search programs and consequent rapid location of the extremal of the chosen objective function.

    Notes: The principles involved in designing a process for the production of fixed nitrogen by the direct use of fission fragment recoil energy are reviewed. The problems concerned with the radiation chemistry, development of fuel element, reactor design, and chemical process design are pointed out. Possible solutions to these problems incorporated in a complete plant design are presented. An economic evaluation, comparing the chemonuclear process with other conventional processes, is made. The conclusion is reached that at the present state of knowledge there does not seem to be any clear-cut advantage over conventional processes, even based on a nuclear economy. However moderate research efforts should continue for further evaluation of this process.

    Notes: A recirculation type of apparatus with a novel liquid-sampling system was used to obtain liquid-vapor equilibrium data for the hydrogen-nitrogen and deuterium-nitrogen systems at 90° and 95°K. and pressures up to 1,000 lb./sq. in. abs. The data obtained show an average scatter in liquid compositions of the order of 0.01%, thus proving the feasibility of the new liquid-sampling system. The vapor samples are shown by thermodynamic analysis to scatter less than 0.1%. Deuterium is slightly more soluble in liquid nitrogen than hydrogen; the relative volatility is 1.198 at 90°K. and about 1.177 at 95°K. The relative volatility is practically independent of pressure; thus at 90°K. the relative volatility decreases from 1.198 at 100 lb./sq. in. abs. to 1.196 at 1,000 lb./sq. in. abs., but this range of values is well within the experimental error.

    Notes: Measurements have been made of the simultaneous rates of transfer of acetone and benzene between a liquid film and a turbulent three component gas mixture. The measurements were made in a wetted-wall column with both mixtures of acetone, benzene and nitrogen, and acetone, benzene and helium.As predicted by the equations of Part I the mass transfer differs qualitatively as well as quantitatively from mass transfer in the corresponding binary system in which one component is stagnant. In several experiments acetone was transferred from low to high concentrations in accord with the predictions.Both the ternary film and Prandtl-Taylor models satisfactorily predict the rates of transfer of acetone and benzene, and, except possibly for very high Reynolds numbers, the simpler film model is recommended.

The emphasis was placed on the study of packed bed formation and pressure drop increase when the semifluidized beds were formed by the compression of fluidized beds. The data showed good agreement with the theoretical and semiempirical equations based on a simple model of fluidized beds.The results of this investigation would also contribute to the understanding of fluidized beds.

    Notes: The liquid film coefficient is related to bubble diameter and velocity in pure water and to the physical properties of the liquid. The addition to water of organic substances which influence the surface tension and viscosity will decrease the size of the air bubble released from a diffuser and reduce the transfer of oxygen into the solution. The maximum reduction in oxygen transfer occurs in the region of maximum surface tension change. The effect of the addition of several organic substances on the oxygen transfer characteristics are shown.

    Notes: A new method for measuring isothermal rates of heterogeneously catalyzed gas reactions is described. The method involves a differential reactor incorporated in a recycling system and affords ease of control, accuracy, and many rate measurements in one run.The results for the reaction system investigated show that four reactions are important: the dehydration of ethanol to ethylene, the reaction of ethanol to form diethyl ether, the dehydration of diethyl ether to ethylene, and the reaction of diethyl ether to form ethanol.It is also shown that the rate controlling steps are the monomolecular surface reactions for the two dehydrations and for the formation of ethanol from diethyl ether, and the bimolecular surface reaction for the formation of diethyl ether from ethanol.The values and the temperature dependence of all pertinent rate and adsorption constants are determined and reported, and they are shown to correlate very well the data up to 80% conversion.

    Notes: Studies of mass transfer with rapid, homogeneous, irreversible reactions between dilute species with equal difusivities are carried out with a device which reduces the system of mass transfer-reaction equations to the equations for mass transfer in the absence of reaction.A relationship which gives the rate of transfer into stagnant, laminar, or turbulent reacting systems is developed. Under some conditions the reaction increases the transfer rates by a constant factor, while under other conditions the reaction increases the individual or over-all mass transfer coefficients by a constant factor.Calculations of concentration profiles, conversion, etc. are carried out for the Graetz problem with a homogeneous reaction between a dilute species in the fluid and a dilute species diffusing from the tube wall. Reaction completion times for various stagnant elements in infinite media are given.Although the flux into a turbulent reacting fluid is related to the time average behavior in the absence of reaction, the time average concentrations depend also upon the relative intensity of the concentration fluctuations in the absence of reaction. This latter dependence is obtained from a relationship of Hawthorne, et al.Surfaces on which the time average composition is stoichiometric and the reactant concentrations are proportional to the relative intensity of the concentration fluctuations in the absence of reaction are obtained for turbulent flow in a tube with a homogeneous reaction between the fluid and wall. Distances for almost complete reaction are estimated.The time average conversion is related to the accomplished mixing for the case in which two dilute reactants are turbulently mixed. In a uniform, stoichiometric mixture the fractional conversion equals the accomplished mixing. Calculations are carried out for uniform, nonstoichiometric mixtures.

    Notes: This study forms part of a project aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the behavior of nonideal permselective membranes. The object here was to determine the applicability of the Nernst-Planck equations for studying the behavior of ions in aqueous solutions surrounding such a membrane during electrodialysis.Attention was confined to stagnant and laminar flow systems. The processes studied were transfer of hydrogen ions, silver ions, and mixtures of the two through the cation exchanging membrane Nepton CR-61. The bulk solution concentrations on either side of the membrane varied from 0.01 to 0.20 N, and in all cases the only anions present were nitrate ions. Limiting currents for solutions of silver nitrate were predictable within 15%, with much of the uncertainty resulting from the difficulty in defining the limiting current. For mixtures of silver nitrate and nitric acid the limiting currents were predictable within the range of experimental accuracy but were found to be quite sensitive to small changes in the operating conditions. This sensitivity results from the very high relative mobility of the hydrogen ions. The relative transport of the two cations was primarily a function of relative concentration, relative diffusivities, current density, and ion exchange equilibria and was predictable with an accuracy limited only by the uncertainty of the ionic diffusivities and the ion exchange equilibria.The diffusivities of the cations in the membrane relative to the diffusivity of nitrate ion were estimated to be about ten times lower than in solution. This was explained by assuming that the cations tended to concentrate about the anionic fixed charges of the membrane thereby portially screening their effectiveness and reducing the mobility of the cations. In mixtures, the membrane diffusivity of the silver ions relative to the hydrogen ions was lower (by a factor of 1.4 to 3.6) than the relative diffusivity in solution. This indicated that silver ions were more easily concentrated about the fixed charges and thereby screened them from both the anions and hydrogen ions.

    Notes: The steady state diffusion of gases through capillaries or through the pores of a solid when the total pressure in the system is constant is considered. It is shown that the ratio of the molar diffusion rate of the lighter gas to that of the heavier gas must be equal to the square root of the ratio of the molecular weight of the heavier to the lighter.From simple momentum transfer considerations a diffusion equation is derived to describe the diffusion rate as the nature of the process changes from ordinary mutual diffusion to Knudsen diffusion. This equation is shown to give good agreement with experimental measurements of diffusion rates in porous solids. A structural parameter of the porous solid, the diffusion ratio, is calculated from the experimental results and compared with the experimental value of the same ratio found from electrical resistance ratios and from flow measurements.

    Notes: An experimental technique is described for estimating the coalescence frequency of droplets in an agitated liquid-liquid system. Results are presented for dilute aqueous dispersions in toluene. Quantitative estimates of the coalescence frequency are based upon a simple model proposed to describe the coalescence process. The coalescence frequency is shown to increase markedly with increase in impeller speed and to a lesser extent with increase in the dispersed-phase volume.

    Notes: As a preliminary to detailed kinetic analysis of ion-exclusion operations a study of the rate of absorption of glycerol from dilute aqueous solution has been made in small fixed beds of ion exchange resin. The resin used was Amberlite IR-120 (hydrogen form) ranging in size from 0.210 to 1.190 mm., as determined by dry screening. Solution flow rates were varied from 0.45 to 22.20 ml./(sq.cm.min.).Analysis of this problem has shown that the operation of such a process may be described by a simple linear rate equation and the usual transient column material balance relations. It was found that experimental breakthrough data could be well matched with curves predicted by such analysis. Furthermore, three characteristic regions of operation are apparent in which different rate controlling processes may be operating.
