Notizen: We study on the initial-boundary value problem for some degenerate non-linear wave equations of Kirchhoff type with a strong dissipation:\documentclass{minimal} \begin{document} \[ u_{tt}=\left\| \nabla u\right\| ^{2\gamma }\Delta u-\Delta u_t=\left| u\right| ^\alpha u,\quad u(0)=u_0,\;u_t(0)=u_1,\;u|_{\partial \Omega }=0. \] \end{document}When the initial energy $E(u_0,u_1)\equiv \left\| u_1\right\| ⁁2+\frac 1{\gamma +1}\left\| \nabla u_0\right\| ⁁{2(\gamma +1)}-\frac 2{\alpha+2}\left\| u_0\right\| _{\alpha +2}⁁{\alpha +2}$ associated with the equations is non-negative and small, a unique (weak) solution exists globally in time and has some decay properties. When the initial energy E(u0,u1) is negative, the solution blows up at some finite time. In the proof we use the ‘modified potential well’ and ‘Concavity’ methods. © 1997 by B.G. Notizen: We prove existence, in a small time interval, of a classical solution having a regular free boundary, (i.e. the level set {u=0}) of a multidimensional filtration problem. The key point to get the regularity of the level set {u=0} is the proof of an a priori estimate for the L∞-norm of ut. © 1997 by B.G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: The linear problem for the velocity potential around a slightly curved thin finite wing is considered under the Joukowskii-Kutta hypothesis. The exponents of possible singularities of solutions at angular points on wing's trailing edge are expressed in terms of eigenvalues of mixed boundary value problems for the Beltrami-Laplace operator on the hemisphere and the semicircle. These singularities have a structure such that the circulation function turns out to be continuous in interior angular points of the trailing edge. In the case of trapezoidal shape of the wing ends there occur square-root singularities of the velocity field at the trailing edge endpoints and the same singularities, of course, are extended along the lateral sides of the wake behind the wing. It is proved that for any angular point on the trailing edge the exponents of all above-mentioned singularities form a countable set in the upper complex half-plane with the only accumulation point at infinity. © 1998 B. Notizen: We study the long-time behaviour of solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equation for initial data small enough and satisfying some suitable integrability conditions. Our analysis relies on the study of the linearized problems with bounded potentials decaying fast enough for large times. We obtain global bounds in time for the fundamental solutions of such problems and their derivatives. This allows to get sharp bounds for the decay of the difference between the solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equation and the solution of the free equation with the same initial data. Thanks to these bounds, we get an explicit form for the second term in the asymptotic expansion of the solutions for large times. © 1998 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart - John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: An initial-value problem modelling coagulation and fragmentation processes is studied. The results of earlier papers are extended to models where either one or both of the rates of coagulation and fragmentation depend on time. An abstract integral equation, involving the solution operator to the linear fragmentation part, is investigated via the contraction mapping principle. A unique global, non-negative, mass-conserving solution to this abstract equation is shown to exist. The latter solution is used to generate a global, non-negative, mass-conserving solution to the original non-autonomous coagulation and multiple-fragmentation equation. © 1998 B. G. Notizen: Reaction random-walk systems are hyperbolic models to describe spatial motion (in one dimension) with finite speed and reactions of particles. Here we present two approaches which relate reaction random-walk equations with reaction diffusion equations. First, we consider the case of high particle speeds (parabolic limit). This leads to a singular perturbation analysis of a semilinear damped wave equation. A initial layer estimate is given. Secondly, we consider the case of a transcritical bifurcation. We use techniques similar to that of the Ginzburg-Landau method to find a modulation equation for the amplitude of the first unstable mode. It turns out that the modulation equation is Fisher's equation, hence near the bifurcation point travelling wave solutions are obtained. The approximation result and the corresponding estimate is given in terms of the bifurcation parameter. Both results are based on an a priori estimate for classical solutions which follows from explicit representations of the solution of the linear telegraph equation. © 1998 B. G. Notizen: In the article the problem of regulation of the cardiovascular system is investigated from the point of view of control process theory. This problem was reduced to finding the optimal control in the sense of speed in a bilinear system. In the first part of the article the possibility of applying Saburov's method for the solution to bilinear control problems is considered. The second part of the article is devoted to the application of this method to a concrete problem from practical medicine. The method has allowed the complete synthesis of an optimal control to be carried out  -  the sliding mode takes place and it was investigated completely. The results obtained are interesting from the point of view of control process theory, and testify to the high efficiency of the method. The final results allow concrete recommendations about the regulation of the cardiovascular system. © 1998 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart - John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: The steady-state equations for a charged gas or fluid consisting of several components, exposed to an electric field, are considered. These equations form a system of strongly coupled, quasilinear elliptic equations which in some situations can be derived from the Boltzmann equation. The model uses the duality between the thermodynamic fluxes and the thermodynamic forces. Physically motivated mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions are prescribed. The existence of generalized solutions is proven. The key of the proof is a transformation of the problem by using the entropic variables, or electro-chemical potentials, which symmetrize the equations. The uniqueness of weak solutions is shown under the assumption that the boundary data are not far from the thermal equilibrium. A general uniqueness result cannot be expected for physical reasons. © 1998 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart - John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: We consider an elastic plate with the non-deformed shape ΩΣ := Ω \ Σ, where Ω is a domain bounded by a smooth closed curve Γ and Σ ⊂ Ω is a curve with the end points {γ1, γ2}. If the force g is given on the part ΓN of Γ, the displacement u is fixed on ΓD := Γ \ ΓN and the body force f is given in Ω, then the displacement vector u(x) = (u1(x), u2(x)) has unbounded derivatives (stress singularities) near γk, k = 1, 2   u(x) = ∑2k, l=1 Kl(γk)r1/2kSCkl(θk) + uR(x)     near γk.Here (rk, θk) denote local curvilinear polar co-ordinates near γk, k = 1, 2, SCkl (θk) are smooth functions defined on [-π, π] and uR(x) ∊ {H2(near γk)}2. The constants Kl(γk),   l = 1, 2, which are called the stress intensity factors at γk (abbr. SIFs), are important parameters in fracture mechanics. We notice that the stress intensity factors Kl(γk) (l = 1, 2;  k = 1, 2) are functionals Kl(γk) = Kl(γk; L, Ω, Σ) depending on the load L, the shape of the plate Ω and the shape of the crack Σ. We say that the crack Σ is safe, if Kl(γk; Ω)2 + K2(γk; Ω)2 〈 RẼ. By a small change of Ω the shape Σ can change to a dangerous one, i.e. we have K1(γk; Ω)2 + K2(γk; Ω)2 ≥ RẼ. Therefore it is important to know how Kl(γk) depends on the shape of Ω.For this reason, we calculate the Gâteaux derivative of Kl(γk) under a class of domain perturbations which includes the approximation of domains by polygonal domains and the Hadamard's parametrization Γ(τ) := {x + τφ(x)n(x);  x ∊ Γ}, where φ is a function on Γ and n is the outward unit normal on Γ. The calculations are quite delicate because of the occurrence of additional stress singularities at the collision points {γ3, γ4} = ΓD ∩ ΓN.The result is derived by the combination of the weight function method and the Generalized J-integral technique (abbr. GJ-integral technique). The GJ-integrals have been proposed by the first author in order to express the variation of energy (energy release rate) by extension of a crack in a 3D-elastic body. This paper begins with the weak solution of the crack problem, the weight function representation of SIF's, GJ-integral technique and finish with the shape sensitivity analysis of SIF's. GJ-integral Jω(u; X) is the sum of the P-integral (line integral) Pω(u, X) and the R-integral (area integral) Rω(u, X). With the help of the GJ-integral technique we derive an R-integral expression for the shape derivative of the potential energy which is valid for all displacement fields u ∊ H1. Using the property that the GJ-integral vanishes for all regular fields u ∊ H2 we convert the R-integral expression for the shape derivative to a P-integral expression. © 1998 B. G. Notizen: The asymptotic behaviour of solutions of certain semilinear elliptic Dirichlet boundary value problems defined on a semi-infinite cylinder is investigated by means of energy arguments and maximum principles. Various hypotheses are made on the form of the semilinear term, and in some cases it is found that the rate of decay of solutions is faster than the optimal decay rate for harmonic functions. © 1998 B. Notizen: In this paper the problem of collision analysis for a mobile robot operating in a planar environment with moving objects (obstacles) is addressed. The pattern of motion of the potential obstacles cannot be predicted; only a bound on their maximum velocity is available. Based on this information, at its current position the robot constructs the Hazard Region that corresponds to the path it contemplates. If the Hazard Region contains at least one obstacle, then there is a potential for this obstacle to collide with the robot (in which case perhaps another path should be planned). We first derive the solution for Hazard Region for two standard path primitives, a straight line segment and a circular arc segment; the solution is exact, except for one special case (for which the approximation error is estimated). This result is then applied to a more complex case when the path presents a combination of those primitives. Such are, for example, the optimal (shortest) paths with constrained curvature (known as Dubins paths [3]), which connect two points, each with a prescribed direction of motion. © 1998 B. G. Notizen: We consider the acoustic propagator A=-∇·c2∇ in the strip Ω={(x, z)∊∝2∣0〈z〈H} with finite width H〉0. The celerity c depends for large ∣x∣ only on the variable z and describes the stratification of Ω: it is assumed to be in L∞(Ω), bounded from below by cmin〉0, such that there exists M〉0 with c(x, z)=c1(z) if x〈 -M and c(x, z)=c2(z) if x〉M. We look at the propagator A as a ‘perturbation’ of the free propagators Aj in Ω associated to the velocities cj, j=1, 2, and implement a ‘perturbative’ method, adapting ideas of Majda and Vainberg. The spectrum of A is defined in section 2, a limiting absorption principle is proved in section 3 outside of a countable set Γ(A). The points of Γ(A) can only accumulate at the left of the thresholds of the free propagators. The needed material about Aj, j=1, 2, and some technical estimates for A are given in Appendix. © 1998 B. Notizen: This article treats the initial-boundary-value problem of viscoplasticity using unified constitutive models without a yield surface. Semi-discretization with the finite element method (FEM) leads to a system of differential-algebraic equations (DAE) with strongly non-linear evolution equations for the internal state variables. A special family of partitioned Runge-Kutta methods is introduced which allows an efficient time integration of the semidiscrete system. Coefficients for methods of order one, two, and three are given. Finally, numerical results for some two- and three-dimensional examples using the model of Hart are presented. In a second part we will give the theoretical background and state a proof of convergence for the algorithm presented in this paper. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: We analyse the time decay of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the linear hyperbolic system of elasticity for anisotropic media. As an example, we will consider media with hexagonal symmetry. First we derive decay estimates for special initial data using the method of stationary phase in several variables and degenerate phase function based on the Malgrange preparation theorem. Asymptotic expansions are given to prove the sharpness of the weaker time decay found for zinc and beryl than in the isotropic case. A method using Besov spaces leads to Lp-Lq-estimates.

Notizen: This paper is concerned with the effective numerical treatment of elliptic boundary value problems when the solutions contain singularities. The paper deals first with the theory of problems of this type in the context of weighted Sobolev spaces and covers problems in domains with conical vertices and non-intersecting edges, as well as polyhedral domains with Lipschitz boundaries. Finite element schemes on graded meshes for second-order problems in polygonal/polyhedral domains are then proposed for problems with the above singularities. These schemes exhibit optimal convergence rates with decreasing mesh size. Finally, we describe numerical experiments which demonstrate the efficiency of our technique in terms of ‘actual’ errors for specific (finite) mesh sizes in addition to the asymptotic rates of convergence.

Notizen: It is shown that the non-linear coagulation-fragmentation equation with constant kernels has a unique equilibrium solution. This equilibrium solution is given explicitly in terms of the initial data and the kernels. Weak L1 convergence of time-dependent solutions to the unique equilibrium is demonstrated via an invariance principle employing a suitable lower semicontinuous Lyapunov functional.

Notizen: The mixed-Neumann problem for the non-linear wave equation □u-a(u)(∣∂tu)∣2-∣∇u∣2 = fε(z) is studied. The function fε(z) = ∑k∊Kfk(z,ε-1φk(z),ε), ε∊[0,1], K is finite, fk(z,θk,ε) are 2π-periodic with respect to θk. The existence of solution uε on a domain z = (t,x,y)∊[0,T]×∝+×∝d, d = 1 or 2, is proved when ε is sufficiently small; T does not depend on ε. By the non-linear geometric optics method the asymptotic (with respect to ε→0) solution ũ ε is constructed. The estimation for the rest ε2rε = uε-ũε is derived and the limit rε, ε→0, is studied.

Notizen: This paper analyses the Child-Langmuir asymptotics of the Vlasov-Poisson problem in cylindrical or spherical symmetry. The problem was stated in the first part of this paper [2]. We recall that the Child-Langmuir asymptotics concerns the boundary value problem for the Vlasov-Poisson system in the situation where the thermal energy of the injected particles at the boundary is small compared with the external applied bias.In the first part, we derived the set of estimates which allow us to pass to the limit in the asymptotic problem. In the present part, we analyse the limit (or ‘reduced’) problem, which leads us to a characterization of the limit or ‘Child-Langmuir’ current which flows through the system.

Notizen: The Lyapunov stability is analysed for a class of integro-differential equations with unbounded operator coefficients. These equations arise in the study of non-conservative stability problems for viscoelastic thin-walled elements of structures. Some sufficient stability conditions are derived by using the direct Lyapunov method. These conditions are formulated for arbitrary kernels of the Volterra integral operator in terms of norms of the operator coefficients. Employing these conditions the supersonic flutter of a viscoelastic panel is studied and explicit expressions for the critical gas velocity are derived. Dependence of the critical flow velocity on the material characteristics and compressive load is analysed numerically.

Notizen: In this paper we generalize the abstract results of Mock and Marcowich [13, 12] for convergence of discrete Van Roosbroeck systems [12, 13, 17], to the case when the solutions are typically in W1,4-ε and not in H2. These conditions are verified on finite element discretizations. Error estimates are derived when the solution is unique. Due to the singularity at the flat angles, these estimates in the H1 norm are only O(h1/2). The techniques that are presented are broad and may be applied to other type of discretizations.

Notizen: Explicit a priori continuous dependence estimates are derived for the Brinkman equations for non-isothermal flow in porous media. Continuous dependence on the cooling coefficient is shown when a boundary condition of Newton cooling type is employed. Continuous dependence on the model itself is proved when the Boussinesq model is allowed to change to one appropriate to penetrative convection. The final result derives an a priori continuous dependence estimate for the heat supply and body force.

Notizen: Lie's theory in its current formulation is linear, local and canonical. As such, it is not applicable to a growing number of non-linear, non-local and non-canonical systems which have recently emerged in particle physics, superconductivity, astrophysics and other fields. In this paper, which is written by a physicist for mathematicians, we review and develop a generalization of Lie's theory proposed by the Italian-American physicist R. M. Santilli back in 1978 when at the Department of Mathematics of Harvard University and today called Lie-Santilli isotheory. The latter theory is based on the so-called isotopies which are non-linear, non-local and non-canonical maps of any given linear, local and canonical theory capable of reconstructing linearity, locality and canonicity in certain generalized spaces and fields. The emerging Lie-Santilli isotheory is remarkable because it preserves the abstract axioms of Lie's theory while being applicable to non-linear, non-local and non-canonical systems. After reviewing the foundations of the Lie-Santilli isoalgebras and isogroups, and introducing seemingly novel advances in their interconnections, we show that the Lie-Santilli isotheory provides the invariance of all infinitely possible (well-behaved), non-linear, non-local and non-canonical deformations of conventional Euclidean, Minkowskian or Riemannian invariants. We also show that the non-linear, non-local and non-canonical symmetry transformations of deformed invariants are easily computable from the linear, local and canonical symmetry transforms of the original invariants and the given deformation. We then briefly indicate a number of applications of the isotheory in various fields. Numerous rather fundamental and intriguing, open mathematical and physical problems are indicated during the course of our analysis.

Notizen: We continue the study of the operators of generalized linear elasticity and investigate the behaviour of the solutions as the frequency tends to zero. We identify degenerate operators in terms of special solutions to the static problem which must be added to the usual Neumann series in order to describe the low frequency behaviour adequately. As a byproduct we construct solutions to the homogeneous static operator (‘spherical elastics’) which generalize the spherical harmonics and give rise to a ‘spherical elastics expansion’. © 1997 B. Notizen: We develop aspects of Clifford analysis over the sphere and hyperbolae. We focus primarily on the hyperbola lying in the Minkowski type space ∝n,1. We show that in order to give a proper extension of basic results on Clifford analysis in Euclidean space to this context one needs to consider both hyperbolae lying in ∝n,1. We also introduce Bergman spaces of Lp left monogenic sections in this context and consider the decomposition of square integrable sections over suitable bundles constructed over subdomains of spheres and hyperbolae. The results presented here cover the necessary background to enable one to set up and solve boundary value problems for field-type equations over hyperbolae. In particular, one can study analogues of the Dirichlet problem for analogues of the Laplacian over hyperbolae and spheres. © 1997 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: Considered is the rotation of a robot arm or rod in a horizontal plane about an axis through the arm's fixed end and driven by a motor whose torque is controlled. The model was derived and investigated computationally by Sakawa and co-authors in [7] for the case that the arm is described as a homogeneous Euler beam. The resulting equation of motion is a partial differential equation of the type of a wave equation which is linear with respect to the state, if the control is fixed, and non-linear with respect to the control.Considered is the problem of steering the beam, within a given time interval, from the position of rest for the angle zero into the position of rest under a certain given angle. At first we show that, for every L2-control, there is exactly one (weak) solution of the initial boundary value problem which describes the vibrating system without the end condition. Then we show that the problem of controllability is equivalent to a non-linear moment problem. This, however, is not exactly solvable. Therefore, an iteration method is developed which leads to an approximate solution of sufficient accuracy in two steps. This method is numerically implemented and demonstrated by an example. © 1998 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: A time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau-type model of a superconducting-normal-superconducting junction is presented. The existence and the uniqueness of the solutions are proved. When the data of the model are symmetric of some kinds, the solutions turns out to be symmetric of some kinds. In this symmetric case, an approximate model with the small thickness of the normal material in the middle of the junction as coefficients of a differential system is established for the sake of numerical computations. Notizen: Wavelets on closed surfaces in Euclidean space ∝3 are introduced starting from a scale discrete wavelet transform for potentials harmonic down to a spherical boundary. Essential tools for approximation are integration formulas relating an integral over the sphere to suitable linear combinations of function values (resp. normal derivatives) on the closed surface under consideration. A scale discrete version of multiresolution is described for potential functions harmonic outside the closed surface and regular at infinity. Furthermore, an exact fully discrete wavelet approximation is developed in case of band-limited wavelets. Finally, the role of wavelets is discussed in three problems, namely (i) the representation of a function on a closed surface from discretely given data, (ii) the (discrete) solution of the exterior Dirichlet problem, and (iii) the (discrete) solution of the exterior Neumann problem. © 1998 by B. Notizen: We present a bending model for a shallow arch, namely the type of curved rod where the curvature is of the order of the diameter of the cross section. The model is deduced in a rigorous mathematical way from classical tridimensional linear elasticity theory via asymptotic techniques, by taking the limit on a suitable re-scaled formulation of that problem as the diameter of the cross section tends to zero. This model is valid for general cases of applied forces and material, and it allows us to calculate displacements, axial stresses, bending moments and shear forces. The equations present a more general form than in the classical Bernoulli-Navier bending theory for straight slender rods, so that flexures and extensions are proved to be coupled in the most general case. © 1998 by B. Notizen: In this work we analyse a model for radiative heat transfer in materials that are conductive, grey and semitransparent. Such materials are for example glass, silicon, water and several gases. The most important feature of the model is the non-local interaction due to exchange of radiation. This, together with non-linearity arising from the well-known Stefan-Boltzmann law, makes the resulting heat equation non-monotone. By analysing the terms related to heat radiation we prove that the operator defining the problem is pseudomonotone. Hence, we can prove the existence of weak solution in the cases where coercivity can be obtained. In the general case, we prove the solvability of the system using the technique of sub and supersolutions. © 1998 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

The goal is to construct a dissipative feedback control synthesis that stabilizes the prescribed output functional along trajectories of solutions. The results are applied to a singularly perturbed Johnson-Sagelman-Oldroyd model of shearing motions of a piston driven flow of a non-Newtonian fluid. © 1997 by B.G. Notizen: The three-dimensional steady state oscillation problems of the elasticity theory for homogeneous anisotropic bodies are studied. By means of the limiting absortion principle the fundamental matrices maximally decaying at infinity are constructed and the generalized Sommerfeld-Kupradze type radiation conditions are formulated. Special functional spaces are introduced in which the basic and mixed exterior boundary value problems of the steady state oscillation theory have unique solutions for arbitrary values of the oscillation parameter. Existence theorems are proved by reduction of the original boundary value problems to equivalent boundary integral (pseudodifferential) equations. © 1997 by B.G. Notizen: In the paper we study the problem of control by means of a heat source g for a thermoelastic system of equationsutt - ρ∇·p(θ, ∇u) - νΔut + DΔ2 u = f, cv(θ, ∇u)θt - κΔθ - ρθ[pθ (θ, ∇u)·∇ut] - ν∣∇ut∣2 = g, in a two-dimensional domain, where both viscosity ν and rigidity D are positive. Such a system has been considered in our former papers, and existence of solutions as well as uniqueness have been obtained. Here we prove the continuity and differentiability of solutions under somewhat stronger assumptions. An example of a control problem and necessary optimality conditions are presented. The system has an interpretation as a plate reinforced with shape memory alloy (SMA) wire mesh. © 1998 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: The exact solutions for the KdV and the Calogero-Degasperis-Fokas mKdV equations can be obtained by the AKNS class. The technique developed relies on the construction of the wave functions which are solutions of the associated AKNS system; that is, a linear eigenvalue problem in the form of a system of first order partial differential equations. The method of characteristics is used and Bäcklund transformations (BTs) are employed to generate two new solutions from the old. © 1998 B.G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: This paper deals with the detection of emergent plane cracks, by using boundary measurements. An identifiability result (uniqueness of the solution) is first proved. Then, we look at the stability of this solution with respect to the measurement. A weak stability result is proved, as well as a Lipshitz stability result for straight cracks, by using domain-derivative techniques. © 1998 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart - John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: The two-dimensional frictionless contact problem of linear isotropic elasticity in the half-space is treated as a boundary variational inequality involving the Poincare-Steklov operator and discretized by linear boundary elements. Quadratic growth of the energy near the solution is shown under weak regularity assumptions if the central axis of external forces intersects the boundary of the domain in a Lebesgue null set. Estimating the numerical range of the discrete Poincare-Steklov operator and properly modifying it, enables the application of an error estimate for semi-coercive variational inequalities. Optimal order of convergence is obtained in the underlying Sobolev space H1/2(∂Ω)2. © 1997 by B.G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: The aim of this paper is to investigate the behaviour as t→∞ of solutions to the Cauchy problem ut-Δut-νΔu-(b, ∇u)=∇⋅F(u), u(x, 0)=u0(x), where ν〉0 is a fixed constant, t≥0, x∊∝n. First, we prove that if u is the solution to the linearized equation, i.e. with ∇⋅F(u)≡0, then u decays like a solution for the analogous problem to the heat equation. Moreover, the long-time behaviour of u is described by the heat kernel. Next, analogous results are established for the non-linear equation with some assumptions imposed on F, p, and the initial condition u0. © 1997 by B.G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: The article treats the question of how to numerically solve the Dirichlet problem for the Stokes system in the exterior of a three-dimensional bounded Lipschitz domain. In a first step, the solution of this problem is approximated by functions solving the Stokes system in a truncated domain and satisfying a suitable artificial boundary condition on the outer boundary of this truncated domain. In a second step, this new problem is approximately solved in finite element spaces related to a graded mesh as introduced by Goldstein [Math. Comp., 36, 387-404 (1981)]. The difference between this finite element approximation and the exact solution of the exterior Stokes problem is estimated in the norm of suitable unweighted L2-Sobolev spaces. These estimates are analogous to corresponding results which are known for the Poisson equation. © 1997 by B.G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: We consider exact controllability of a system of two Schrödinger equations. These represent matter waves in adjacent potential wells with different potentials, one zero, the other a positive constant V0. The problem is formulated as a simultaneous boundary controllability problem, with Dirichlet control. Estimates for the controls, including an observability inequality, are proved using multiplier techniques. Then the Hilbert uniqueness method is used to obtain the exact controllability result. If V0 is sufficiently small, there exists a time T^(V0) such that the system is exactly controllable in times T〉T^(V0). © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: Here we consider initial boundary value problems for parabolic equations in non-bounded (with respect to time) domains by using the single-layer potential. We discuss the solvability in anisotropic Hölder spaces of the boundary integral equations, to which original parabolic problems are reduced. We construct the special operators (regularizers) for these integral equations which transform them to equivalent integral Volterra equations of the second kind with weakly singular kernels. As a corollary we obtain the theorem about the classical solvability in anisotropic Hölder spaces for initial boundary value parabolic problems. © 1997 by B. G. Notizen: In this paper we study the following problem:ut-Δu=-f(u) in Ω×(0, T)≡QT,∂u ∂n=g(u) on ∂Ω×(0, T)≡ST,u(x, 0)=u0(x) in Ω, where Ω⊂∝N is a smooth bounded domain, f and g are smooth functions which are positive when the argument is positive, and u0(x)〉0 satisfies some smooth and compatibility conditions to guarantee the classical solution u(x, t) exists. We first obtain some existence and non-existence results for the corresponding elliptic problems. Then, we establish certain conditions for a finite time blow-up and global boundedness of the solutions of the time-dependent problem. Further, we analyse systems with same kind of boundary conditions and find some blow-up results. In the last section, we study the corresponding elliptic problems in one-dimensional domain. Our main method is the comparison principle and the construction of special forms of upper-lower solutions using related equations. © 1998 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart - John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Implicit one-step difference methods for quasilinear parabolic initial boundary value problems in two space variables and in polar coordinates are considered. Problems of this kind are suitable for the description of diffusion processes in plasma physics. Therefore, because of its special physical interest the dependence of the coefficients both on the solution and on its space derivatives (the fluxes) is included. The first part of this paper deals with proving convergence of the discrete approximations for vanishing step sizes. For this purpose, bounds for the inverse difference operators have to be derived previously. The nonlinear systems arising from the discretizations have exactly one solution for all step sizes being sufficiently small. In the second part of the article numerical tests are performed. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: This article establishes the existence of trapped-mode solutions of a linearized water-wave problem. The fluid occupies a symmetric horizontal channel that is uniform everywhere apart from a confined region which either contains a thin vertical plate spanning the depth of the channel or has indentations in the channel walls. A trapped mode corresponds to an eigenvalue of a non-local Neumann-Dirichlet operator for an elliptic boundary-value problem in the fluid domain. The existence of such an eigenvalue is established by generalizing previous results concerning spectral theory for differential operators to this non-local operator. © 1997 by B. G. Notizen: A class of diffraction problems for the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation is studied where the boundary conditions on a canonical screen contain oblique derivatives. The problem in weak formulation is reduced to a system of pseudodifferential equations on a half-line. The Fredholm property is characterized in dependence of the parameters, index formulas are given, and, if necessary, a normalization of the problem is implemented. © 1997 by B.G. Notizen: In this paper a time-discrete dynamic model for the process of disarmament is investigated. The state variables of the system are costs and security values. We assume that the costs can be controlled, and we aim at reducing the costs to zero and achieving non-negative security values after a finite number of time steps. In the case where the opponents behave cooperatively this leads to the solution of a linear programming problem. If the opponents behave non-cooperatively, then a Nash equilibrium has to be determined under linear constraints. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Math. Meth. Appl. Notizen: In this paper we prove the existence of a weak solution to the non-stationary drift-diffusion equations (van Roosbroeck's system) of semiconductor theory involving discontinuous permittivities. The proof is based on an approximation of these equations by a system with bounded non-linearities, deriving a priori estimates on the approximate solutions and then carrying out the passage to limit. The discussion is completed by some regularity results for the weak solution under consideration. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Math. Meth. Appl. Notizen: We study the free streaming operator T∧ in a slab domain with boundary conditions described by a linear matrix operator Λ acting between the ‘incoming’ and ‘outgoing’ particle fluxes. Under suitable assumptions on the entries of Λ, it is proved that the resolvent operator of T∧ is positive. It is proved also that T∧ is the generator of a positive strongly continuous semigroup, whose type depends on the norm of the entries of Λ. Some examples are given. In particular the case of Maxwell type boundary conditions is studied and the location of the spectrum of T∧ is improved. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart - John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Math. Meth. Appl. Notizen: In the present paper we prove Cα-estimates for ∇u using components of boundary values of u, div u, curl u and quantities given by components of boundary values of u as well as boundary values of elements belonging to de Rhams cohomology modules. The vector field u is defined on a bounded set G¯⊂∝3, meanwhile the cohomology group will be defined with regard to ∝3-G. Our inequalities turn out to be a priori estimates concerning well-known boundary value problems for vector fields. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: We consider a free boundary value problem arising from a non-symmetric problem of electrochemical machining (ECM). After a conformal mapping of the unknown domain the problem is transformed to a non-smooth non-linear Riemann-Hilbert problem for holomorphic functions in the complex unit disk. A special technique allows to remove the singularities in the boundary condition. Utilizing existence results for smooth non-orientable Riemann-Hilbert problems, existence and uniqueness of a solution are shown. Finally, we propose an iterative method of Newton type for the effective numerical computation of the free boundary of the anode and present some test results. © 1997 B. G. Notizen: We prove unique existence of solution for the impedance (or third) boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation in a half-plane with arbitrary L∞ boundary data. This problem is of interest as a model of outdoor sound propagation over inhomogeneous flat terrain and as a model of rough surface scattering. To formulate the problem and prove uniqueness of solution we introduce a novel radiation condition, a generalization of that used in plane wave scattering by one-dimensional diffraction gratings. To prove existence of solution and a limiting absorption principle we first reformulate the problem as an equivalent second kind boundary integral equation to which we apply a form of Fredholm alternative, utilizing recent results on the solvability of integral equations on the real line in [5]. © 1997 B. Notizen: We prove the existence of a wide collection of finite sets of functionals that completely determine the long-time behaviour of strong solutions to the von Karman evolution equations. This collection contains finite sets of determining modes, nodes and local volume averages. The approach presented relies on the concept of a completeness defect for a set of linear functionals and it involves some ideas from abstract approximation theory. Our method is general enough and also can be applied to other non-linear partial differential equations which are of second order in time. © 1997 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: In this paper, we study a system of biharmonic equations coupled by the boundary conditions. These boundary conditions contain some combinations of the values, div, curl, and grad. Applications in mathematical physics are possible and the investigations will be done with the help of hypercomplex methods. It is also the aim of the paper to demonstrate the application of Clifford analytic methods to the solution of boundary value problems. The results on a special boundary value problem for the biharmonic equation will be used for the investigation of some first-order systems of partial differential equations. Notizen: In this paper we present some new results of symmetry for inhomogeneous Dirichlet eigenvalue problems overdetermined by a condition involving the gradient of the first eigenfunction on the boundary. One specificity of the problem studied is the dependence of the equation and the boundary condition on the distance to the origin. The method of investigation is based on the use of continuous Steiner symmetrization together with some domain derivative tools. A certain family of steady, explicit solutions which have spiral streamlines are considered. The ends of piles lying on the boundary of the medium are clamped to a force-free rigid plate. Such a partially composite structure arises in pile foundation mechanics. Assuming that the period of pile structure tends to zero, we obtain the macroscopic equations for free oscillations by homogenization method and prove the corresponding convergence result. © 1997 by B. Notizen: This paper deals with a famous diffraction problem for a single half-plane Σ: x〉0, y=0 as an obstacle and for some time-harmonic plane incident wave field. Rawlins in 1975 was the first to solve the mixed (Dirichlet/Neumann) boundary value problem for the scalar Helmholtz equation. He also was the first to solve the equivalent pair of coupled Wiener-Hopf equations explicitly by factoring their discontinuous 2×2 Fourier matrix symbol in 1980. Although for real wave numbers k the usual factorization procedure fails it will serve as the basis: Following the lines given by Ali Mehmeti in his habilitation thesis [1] for the (Dirichlet/Dirichlet) boundary value problem we combine the idea of integral path deforming along the branch cuts of the characteristic square root √(ξ2-k2) given in Meister's book [13] with the modern Wiener-Hopf method solution derived by Speck [24] explicitly in a H1+ε, ε≥0, Sobolev space setting. The symmetry of the intermediate spaces Hs, H-s, ∣s∣〈1 2, which is due to generalized factorization, plays a key role in deforming the Fourier integral paths in order to get Laplace transform representations of the generalized eigenfunctions of the problem. As a remarkable fact 0〈ε〈¼ must hold here. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: Consider the two adjacent rectangular wedges K1, K2 with common edge in the upper halfspace of ∝3 and the operator A (=-Laplacian multiplied by different constant coefficients a1, a2 in K1, K2, respectively) acting on a subspace of ∏2j=1L2(Kj). This subspace should consist of those sufficiently regular functions u=(u1,u2) satisfying the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on the bottom of the upper halfspace. Moreover, the coincidence of u1 and u2 along the interface of the two wedges is prescribed as well as a transmission condition relating their first one-sided derivatives. We interpret the corresponding wave equation with A defining its spatial part as a simple model for wave propagation in two adjacent media with different material constants. In this paper it is shown (by Friedrichs' extension) that A is selfadjoint in a suitable Hilbert space. Applying the Fourier (-sine) transformations we reduce our problem with singularities along the z-axis to a non-singular Klein-Gordon equation in one space dimension with potential step. The resolvent, the limiting absorption principle and expansion in generalized eigenfunctions of A are derived (by Plancherel theory) from the corresponding results concerning the latter equation in one space dimension. An application of the spectral theorem for unbounded selfadjoint operators on Hilbert spaces yields the solution of the time dependent problem with prescribed initial data. The paper is concluded by a discussion of the relation between the physical geometry of the problem and its spectral properties. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: We establish local existence and comparison for a model problem which incorporates the effects of non-linear diffusion, convection and reaction. The reaction term to be considered contains a non-local dependence, and we show that local solutions can be obtained via monotone limits of solutions to appropriately regularized problems. Utilizing this construction, it is further shown that, under conditions of either ‘weak reaction’ or ‘sufficiently small’ initial mass, solutions exist for all time. Finally, we provide an alternative analysis of global existence and investigate blow up in finite time for the case of power law diffusion and convection. These results show the extent to which the assumption of weak reaction may be relaxed and still obtain global existence. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
