Notes: It is shown that when the initial condition and the forcing term of the periodic Navier–Stokes or magnetohydrodynamics equations have Fourier coefficients which vanish outside a certain semigroup of frequencies, the same happens to the solutions for all time. Subgroups of frequencies correspond to solutions possessing certain symmetries. By taking as a semigroup the frequencies whose Fourier components are non-negative integers, we get a class of solutions for which the higher modes do not influence the evolution of the lower ones; therefore, the phenomenon of inverse cascading cannot occur for them. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Instabilities associated with streamlines connecting stagnation points in an equilibrium with plane incompressible flow are studied. It is shown that they belong to two different types: If the velocity of fluid absorption at the endpoint is greater than the velocity of fluid emission at the initial point, only a discrete spectrum of unstable standing waves is possible; otherwise, Alfvénic waves accumulate to form a continuum of unstable frequencies. These are present no matter how small the equilibrium field or the mode number of the magnetic oscillations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A numerical method is developed to find the Alfvén spectrum of axisymmetric toroidal equilibria. It involves the numerical integration of ordinary differential equations only and is therefore faster than finite element algorithms; moreover, the Alfvén frequencies of every flux surface may be calculated independently from the rest. The method is applied to the Shafranov–Solov'ev equilibrium for the first Fourier modes, and the results are compared to those obtained with the geometrical optics approximation. This comparison shows which of the parameters of the equilibrium are relevant on each branch of spectral points. Other features observed in the graphics obtained by this algorithm are also analyzed.

Notes: The main energy inequalities for the induction equation are studied for a variety of boundary conditions. The results are applied to the evolution of the magnetic field and the vector potential within a conducting fluid disregarding the influence of these upon the velocity (the kinematic dynamo problem). Emphasis is placed upon the behavior of these fields at the singular limit of zero magnetic diffusivity. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Surface ultraviolet (UV) irradiance depends not only on stratospheric ozone amounts, but also varies with time and date, latitude, cloud amount and aerosol load. Any assessment of the effect of stratospheric ozone depletion on surface UV irradiance must take into consideration all of the above parameters. Measurements in the UV-B region may be accomplished using filter and detector combinations which mimic a biological response curve. However there are uncertainties such as in determining the exact filter response and in the cosine error of the detector. The UV-A region lacks a strong ozone absorption band and approaches which relate measured UV-A irradiance to measured global irradiance show promise. Theoretical models have been derived which calculate spectral UV irradiance in cloudless and cloudy conditions. Results show that cloud transmissivities increase as wavelength increases; however, there is a strong dependence on cloud type. In the absence of surface observations of clouds, satellite data may be used to map UV-A and UV-B irradiance in a region, and this approach is illustrated using two specific examples.

Notes: Morphologic and morphometric sperm characteristics of mouse epididymal extracts from animals exposed to static magnetic fields were evaluated. For this purpose, animals were exposed for 35 days to a field of 0.7 T generated by a commercial permanent magnet for either 1 or 24 h per day. The values of morphometric parameters were obtained using the morphometric module of the Sperm Class Analyzer® computerized image analysis system, and percentages of abnormalities were calculated. The size of sperm heads was unaffected by exposure to static magnetic fields. Lack of hook was a sperm head abnormality found significantly more frequently in animals exposed continually than in nonexposed animals, showing a possible alteration to the spermatogenic process after exposure to static magnetic fields. The percentage of sperm with coiled tails or of sperm with abnormal midpiece or tail was not altered by exposure. Bioelectromagnetics 19:377-383, 1998. © 1998 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The non-homogeneous magnetohydrodynamics equation is studied, with emphasis on the singularities due to Alfvén resonance. It is shown that for any arbitrary function defined on the singular set, there exists a unique solution of the problem coinciding with this function. Then the values on the singular set which correspond to the correct physical solution are determined proving that this is unique except for a discrete set of geometrical configurations. © 1997 B. G.
