    Beschreibung: The spatial variability in the mix of species making up Cold-water coral reef communities is not well known. In this study abundances of a selection of megafauna (Lophelia pertusa, Madrepora oculata, Paragorgia arborea, Primnoa resedaeformis, Mycale lingua, Geodia baretti, Acesta excavata and fish) were quantified throughout 9 manned submersible video transects from 3 reef complexes (Røst Reef, Sotbakken Reef and Traena Reef) on the Norwegian margin. Substrate type (coral structure, rubble, exposed hardground or soft sediment) was also recorded. Variations in the densities of these fauna (with respect to both reef complex and substrate type) were investigated, with spatial covariance between species assessed. For the majority of fauna investigated, densities varied by both reef and substrate. Spatial covariance indicated that some species may be utilising similar habitat niches, but that minor environmental differences may favour colonisation by one or other at a particular reef. Fish densities were generally higher in regions with biogenic substrate (coral structure and coral rubble substrates) than in areas of soft or hardground substrate. Further, fish were more abundant at the northerly Sotbakken Reef at time of study than elsewhere. Community structure varied by reef, and therefore management plans aimed at maintaining the biodiversity of reef ecosystems on the Norwegian margin should take this lack of homogeneity into account.

    Beschreibung: Solid-solution partitioning of Ra determines the dissolved Ra composition of porewater in marine sands. Therefore, sorption controls also influence the endmember concentration of Ra in submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Ra is widely used as a tracer of SGD, and constraining sorption controls in permeable sands is necessary to evaluate spatial and temporal variation in Ra groundwater activities. This work presents Ra distribution coefficients measured in seawater (salinity 35) for some common solid sorbents as well as different solution compositions relevant to permeable marine sands and the subterranean estuary. There was a strong correlation of Ra distribution coefficient (Kd = solid-phase Ra/solution Ra) with surface area for size-fractionated sediments (log Kd (L/g) = 0.77 [log S.A. (m2/g)] + 0.73; r2 = 0.76). Ra sorption showed no direct relationship with solid-phase Fe or Mn content of the sands, although removal of visible surficial oxide coatings with dilute acid reduced Kd by a factor of 2 to 3. Synthetic Fe-oxides showed nearly two orders of magnitude difference in Ra sorption. Ferrihydrite had the highest Ra sorption coefficient at 1535 ± 410 L kg− 1, followed by lepidocrocite (174 ± 21 L kg− 1), hematite (75 ± 17 L kg− 1), and goethite (20 ± 8 L kg− 1). A marked increase in Ra adsorption was observed with increasing pH, with the sorption edge of natural sands falling within the pH range of 5–8. The extent of Ra sorption at a given pH varied among different substrates. No effect of dissolved Fe was observed on Ra partitioning. A large increase in Ra Kd was evident with increasing Ba concentration when seawater contained sulfate, opposite the effect that would be expected for sorption competition. No effect of Ba concentration was observed when sulfate was excluded from the ASW, indicating that barite precipitation caused the Kd increase. There was no clear effect of temperature on Ra sorption between 2 and 60 °C. Results of this study show that minor solid-phase components increase the Ra sorption capacity of bulk sands and buffer the dissolved Ra concentration (i.e., the SGD endmember). Solution controls on Ra sorption have the potential to greatly alter the Ra composition of discharging groundwater. Given that high-salinity, high-pH conditions probably prevail in porewater below the sediment–water interface, the actual SGD Ra endmember may be less variable than suggested by compilations that include groundwater from deep and fresh groundwater. Highlights ► Variable Ra partitioning to size-fractionated and diverse sediments was primarily controlled by specific surface area. ► Ra displayed pH-dependent sorption to sands, with a sorption edge between pH 5 and 8. ► No effect on Ra partitioning was observed for temperature or competition by dissolved Fe and Ba.

    Beschreibung: There is mounting evidence that driving on the beach has a significant biophysical impact, and it has been suggested in a number of recent studies that driving on the beachface leads to a net loss of sediment from the beach-dune system. Identifying a conclusive link between beach driving and beach erosion is, however, complicated by the natural variability of the environment in both space and time, and it has proven difficult to distinguish the driving signal from this background noise. In this respect, the impacts of beach driving are not clear, making it difficult to develop appropriate management strategies to reduce the impact in either degree or extent. LiDAR data from both Padre Island National Seashore and Assateague Island National Seashore are used in the present study to determine if the differences in beach and dune morphology between restricted and open access sections of the beach are associated with beach driving. Results from Padre Island National Seashore suggest that beach driving does not affect the height and volume of the foredunes, but is responsible for a statistically significant decrease in the elevation of the dune crest and base compared to the control section of beach. The decrease in elevation is ascribed to the compaction and pulverization of seaweed wrack that accumulates along the Texas coast in the spring and summer months, and is responsible for the anchoring of sediment for the growth of new vegetation seaward of the foredune. At Assateague Island National Seashore, driving on the beach is shown to cause a statistically significant change in the beach-dune morphology, with smaller dunes set further back from the shoreline within the open access sections of the beach. Despite the changes in dune morphology at both sites, there is no statistically significant difference in beach-dune volume on either side of the beach access road, which suggests that driving on the beach does not lead to a net loss of sediment from the beach-dune system. Driving on the beach does, however, make the foredune at both sites susceptible to scarping and overwash during tropical storms and hurricanes.

    Beschreibung: Digital macro photography and settling tests were carried out to investigate the morphological and settling characteristics of ANAMMOX granules in a high-rate reactor. The ANAMMOX granules could be divided into settling and floating granules. The settling granules with an average diameter of 2.96 ± 0.99 mm were smaller than the floating granules with an average diameter of 4.58 ± 1.22 mm. A settling model was established and validated to correlate the settling velocity with the density (ρG), mass shape factor (ψmass), shape-correction factor (characterized by sphericity (Φ′) or roundness (ξ)) and projected area equivalent sphere diameter (dP) of ANAMMOX granules. The sphericity was more suitable than the roundness for describing the settling behavior. The sensitivity of four parameters was in the order of ρG, ψmass, dP and Φ′. Based on the settling model, ANAMMOX granules with diameter of 1.75–4.00 mm were supposed to be optimal for the ANAMMOX process.

    Beschreibung: A chemical study of the lichen Ramalina siliquosa complex found in Brittany was conducted. Eight chemotypes were considered and their chemical composition was elucidated for the first time by LC–MS analysis. Ten main compounds were identified: conhypoprotocetraric acid (1), salazinic acid (2), peristictic acid (3), cryptostictic acid (4), protocetraric acid (5), stictic acid (6), norstictic acid (7), hypoprotocetraric acid (8), 4-O-demethylbarbatic acid (9), (+)-usnic acid (10) and 22 minor compounds were reported. The MS/MS fragmentation patterns of each compound of R. siliquosa complex were determined and proposed.

    Beschreibung: The coral species Paragorgia arborea and Primnoa resedaeformis are abundant and widely distributed gorgonians in North Atlantic waters. Both species add significant habitat complexity to the benthic environment, and support a host of invertebrate species. Mapping their distribution is an essential step in conservation and resource management, but challenging as a result of their remoteness. In this study, three predictive models — Ecological Niche Factor Analysis, Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Production and Maximum Entropy modeling (MaxEnt) were applied to predict the distribution of species' suitable habitat across a region of Røst Reef (Norwegian margin) based on multiscale terrain variables. All three models were successful in predicting the habitat suitability for both gorgonian species across the study area, and the MaxEnt predictions were shown to outperform other predictions. All three models predicted the most suitable habitats for both species to mainly occur along the ridges and on the upper section of the large slide, suggesting both species preferentially colonize topographic highs. Jackknife tests for MaxEnt predictions highlighted the seabed aspect in relation to P. arborea distribution, and the seabed relative position (curvature) in relation to the distribution of both species. Given the vulnerability of deep-water corals to anthropogenic impacts, further comparative study over a wider study area would be particularly beneficial for the management of the species.

    Beschreibung: Oil derived from photosynthetic microalgae is a potential major source of renewable energy, but while industrial-scale efforts to grow algal biomass are underway, it remains an expensive process. The cost of biomass production may be offset by using the algae to simultaneously remediate chemical contaminants from wastewater or natural surface waters. This work examines trace metal accumulation and cycling in algae grown for biofuel use, and evaluates the potential of this approach for remediation purposes. In the system studied, a natural, mixed-species algal community was allowed to develop on a shallow floway fed with water from the York River estuary (VA, USA). Accumulation of metals ranged widely in the algal biomass (Fe 〉 Mn 〉 〉Pb 〉 Cu 〉 V 〉 Cd) and represented removal from the dissolved phase of between 1 and 87% (for Cd and Pb, respectively). These metals were selected for analysis because of their differing geochemical behavior, as well as their importance as micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Cu, V) and toxicants (Pb, Cu, Cd). Most of the algal metal inventory was partitioned in the intracellular fraction (∼30% for Mn, 50–90% for other metals; operationally defined using a chemical wash technique), indicating accumulation due to biochemical demand, not adsorption to cell surfaces. Although algal community composition was similar on the upstream and downstream ends of the floway, the metal inventory was two-fold higher on the downstream end. Differences in metal accumulation may have been related to algal physiology or to pronounced cycles of water pH and dissolved oxygen driven by algal photosynthesis and respiration. Differences in metal removal efficiency and biomass inventory indicate that algal floway systems may be manipulated to optimize remediation of metal-contaminated water.

    Beschreibung: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) to the ocean supplies Sr with less radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr than seawater, and thus constitutes an important term in the Sr isotope budget of the modern ocean. However, few data exist for Sr in coastal groundwater or in the geochemically dynamic subterranean estuary (STE). We examined Sr concentrations and isotope ratios from nine globally-distributed coastal sites and characterized the behavior of Sr in the STE. Dissolved Sr generally mixed conservatively in the STE, although large differences were observed in the meteoric groundwater end-member Sr concentrations among sites (0.1–24 μM Sr). Strontium isotope exchange was observed in the STE at five of the sites studied, and invariably favored the meteoric groundwater end-member signature. Most of the observed isotope exchange occurred in the salinity range 5–15, and reached up to 40% exchange at salinity 10. Differences in fresh groundwater Sr concentrations and isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr = 0.707–0.710) reflected aquifer lithology. The SGD end-member 87Sr/86Sr must be lower than modern seawater (i.e., less than 0.70916) in part because groundwater Sr concentrations are orders of magnitude higher in less-radiogenic carbonate and volcanic island aquifers. A simple lithological model and groundwater Sr data compiled from the literature were used to estimate a global average groundwater end-member of 2.9 μM Sr with 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7089. This represents a meteoric-SGD-driven Sr input to the ocean of 0.7–2.8 × 1010 mol Sr y−1. Meteoric SGD therefore accounts for 2–8% of the oceanic Sr isotope budget, comparable to other known source terms, but is insufficient to balance the remainder of the budget. Using reported estimates for brackish SGD, the estimated volume discharge at salinity 10 (7–11 × 1015 L y−1) was used to evaluate the impact of isotope exchange in the STE on the brackish SGD Sr flux. A moderate estimate of 25% isotope exchange in the STE gives an SGD Sr end-member 87Sr/86Sr of 0.7091. The brackish SGD Sr flux thus accounts for 11–23% of the marine Sr isotope budget, but does not appear sufficient to balance the ∼40% remaining after other known sources are included. Substantial uncertainties remain for estimating the SGD source of Sr to the global ocean, especially in the determination of the volume flux of meteoric SGD, and in the paucity of measurements of groundwater Sr isotope composition in major SGD regions such as Papua New Guinea, the South America west coast, and West Africa. Consequently, our global estimate should be viewed with some caution. Nevertheless, we show that the combined sources of meteoric SGD and brackish SGD coupled with isotope exchange in the STE may constitute a substantial component (∼13–30%) of the modern oceanic 87Sr/86Sr budget, likely exceeding less radiogenic Sr inputs by sedimentary diagenesis and hydrothermal circulation through the mid-ocean ridge system. Temporal variation in SGD Sr fluxes and isotope composition may have contributed to fluctuations in the oceanic 87Sr/86Sr ratio over geologic time.

    Beschreibung: The Gaoligongshan metamorphic belt, located east of the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis (EHS) in the Yunnan province, southwestern China, is a compelling region in which to determine temporal constrains on crustal dynamic processes related to the Himalayan orogeny. We applied multi-system geo- and thermochronology (900 °C to 〈50 °C) to orthogneiss and mylonites from a major shear zone in the southern Gaoligongshan in order to elucidate the magmatic, cooling and exhumation history of this belt. Zircon U/Pb data reveal three magmatic events at ∼486 Ma, ∼136 Ma and ∼76 Ma. Similar ages are found in orthoderivative rocks of the neighboring Tengchong and Baoshan blocks, and the Gangdese batholith, suggesting that the southern Gaoligongshan is composed of an assemblage of Lhasa and Qiangtang terrane derived rocks. Muscovite Rb/Sr ages of 35–21 Ma are coeval with the onset of lateral crustal displacement along major shear zones in Eastern Tibet and Indochina, and with the post-collision volcanic activity in western Yunnan. Biotite Rb/Sr and mica 40Ar/39Ar ages provide evidence that mylonitization along the Gaoligongshan shear zone and crustal rotation of the Tengchong and Baoshan blocks proceeded during the Miocene, between 19 and 12 Ma, when the rocks rapidly cooled through the 350–280 °C temperature range. Almost identical 40Ar/39Ar ages reported for the Karakorum–Jiali–Parlung Fault system in Western Tibet suggest that the Gaoligongshan shear zone is the southeastern continuation of this fault, recording the eastward extrusion of Tibet and crustal movement around the EHS. The final stage of exhumation of the Gaoligongshan occurred between 8 and 5 Ma at an average exhumation rate of ∼3 km/Ma as documented by apatite fission-track and apatite (U–Th–Sm)/He data. This rapid exhumation was triggered by crustal root delamination and opening of the Andaman sea. Our results clearly show that the complex tectonothermal evolution of the Gaoligongshan was influenced by Tibetan extrusion and escape tectonics associated with lower crustal flow around the EHS and the southeastward movement of Indochina and back-arc extension in response to Andaman seafloor spreading.

    Beschreibung: Benthic habitat mapping is an important first step towards ecosystem-based management. In a top-down approach, benthic mapping of a semi-enclosed bay in south-eastern Brazil was performed using a combined approach of acoustic RoxAnn survey and benthic samples. An inventory of the benthic macrofauna as well as unsupervised classifications of the acoustic data provided information about sediment patterns and potential areas of ecological importance, and a new zoning scheme is suggested based on the macrofauna analysis. The RoxAnn survey proved suitable to determine sediment characteristics, however, species–environment relationships cannot be revealed by acoustic techniques only. Based on the data presented here, acoustic surveys could become an important tool in future monitoring programmes following the bottom-up approach of seabed classification protocols for an ecosystem-based management to improve existing coastal ecosystem management strategies in Brazil.     Beschreibung: Several lines of evidence have previously been used to suggest that ice retreat after the last glacial maximum (LGM) resulted in regionally-increased levels of volcanic activity. It has been proposed that this increase in volcanism was globally significant, forming a substantial component of the post-glacial rise in atmospheric CO2, and thereby contributing to climatic warming. However, as yet there has been no detailed investigation of activity in glaciated volcanic arcs following the LGM. Arc volcanism accounts for 90% of present-day subaerial volcanic eruptions. It is therefore important to constrain the impact of deglaciation on arc volcanoes, to understand fully the nature and magnitude of global-scale relationships between volcanism and glaciation. The first part of this paper examines the post-glacial explosive eruption history of the Andean southern volcanic zone (SVZ), a typical arc system, with additional data from the Kamchatka and Cascade arcs. In all cases, eruption rates in the early post-glacial period do not exceed those at later times at a statistically significant level. In part, the recognition and quantification of what may be small (i.e. less than a factor of two) increases in eruption rate is hindered by the size of our datasets. These datasets are limited to eruptions larger than 0.1 km3, because deviations from power-law magnitude–frequency relationships indicate strong relative under-sampling at smaller eruption volumes. In the southern SVZ, where ice unloading was greatest, eruption frequency in the early post-glacial period is approximately twice that of the mid post-glacial period (although frequency increases again in the late post-glacial). A comparable pattern occurs in Kamchatka, but is not observed in the Cascade arc. The early post-glacial period also coincides with a small number of very large explosive eruptions from the most active volcanoes in the southern and central SVZ, consistent with enhanced ponding of magma during glaciation and release upon deglaciation. In comparison to non-arc settings, evidence of post-glacial increases in rates of arc volcanism is weak, and there is no need to invoke significantly increased melt production upon ice unloading, as occurred in areas such as Iceland. Non-arc volcanoes may therefore account for a relatively higher proportion of global volcanic emissions in the early post-glacial period than is suggested by the relative contributions of arc and non-arc settings at the present day. The second part of this paper critically examines global eruption records, in an effort to constrain global-scale changes in volcanic output since the LGM. Accurate interpretation of these records relies on correcting both temporal and spatial variability in eruption recording. In particular, very low recording rates, which also vary spatially by over two orders of magnitude, prevent precise, and possibly even accurate, quantitative analysis. For example, if we assume record completeness for the past century, the number of known eruptions (volcanic explosivity index ≥ 2) from some low-latitude regions, such as Indonesia, is approximately 1 in 20,000 (0.005%) for the period 5–20 ka. There is a need for more regional-scale studies of past volcanism in such regions, where current data are extremely sparse. We attempt to correct for recording biases, and suggest a maximum two-fold (but potentially much less) increase in global eruption rates, relative to the present day, between 13 and 7 ka. Although volcanism may have been an important source of CO2 in the early Holocene, it is unlikely to have been a dominant control on changes in atmospheric CO2 after the LGM.

    Beschreibung: Small marine decapods often associatewith other invertebrates in order to gain protection frompredators. However, the factors that influence host choice by symbionts, such as shrimps, are poorly understood but may have important implications for the distribution and abundance of these mesoconsumers. In Hong Kong, the rhynchocinetid shrimp Rhynchocinetes brucei uses two alternative hosts: an urchin (Diadema setosum) and an anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor).We examined the association between R. brucei and its anemone and urchin hosts in the field and laboratory, investigating host choice and host fidelity. Underwater surveys on shallowrocky reefs in Hong Kong revealed that shrimps were rarely found outside refuges, such as crevices and holes, unless they were associated with anemones and urchins. Shrimps were more frequently associated with urchins than with anemones, although anemones were more abundant within the survey area. Host-choice experiments in the laboratory confirmed that, when given a choice, shrimps avoided open areas and associated with anemones, urchins or artificial refuges. Shrimps overwhelmingly chose urchins over artificial refuges, but did not show any clear preference for anemones over refuges. When offered a choice, shrimps displayed fidelity for their original host species (i.e. the host with which they were associated when collected from the field), suggesting that they imprinted upon the host. Host-imprinting may allow symbionts to efficiently relocate their original host species after separation (e.g. following nocturnal foraging trips) thereby, perhaps, reducing the risk of predation. However, host preference by R. brucei was facultative because shrimps would associate with an unfamiliar host when their original host was unavailable.     Beschreibung: The Manus back-arc basin host three distinct well known submarine hydrothermal deposits of Vienna Wood, Pacmanus and Onsen sites. The Vienna Wood site is a typical Cu-Zn type of mineralization consisting predominantly of pyrite, marcasite, sphalerite, wurtzite and chalcopyrite. The Pacmanus site is a polymetallic type of mineral deposit consisting of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, bornite, wurtzite, pyrite, marcasite, enargite, tennantite, galena, Pb-As-Sulphosalt, gold, covellite, digenite and chalcocite. The Onsen site is the first deep sea acid sulfate type of mineralisationconsisting ofenargite, covellite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and marcasite. The Papua New Guinea (PNG) Government has granted exploration license to Nautilus Mineral Cooperation to explore for submarin e hydrothermal deposit in the Manus Basin. It has done extensive exploration around the existing hydrothermal depos its of Vienna Wood, Pacmanus and Onsen site. This has resulted in the discoveries of well over twenty hydrothermal deposits (Solwara 1 to Solwara 20). Nautilus Minerals has done resource drilling on Solwara 1 and Solwara 12 deposit due to its polymetallic type of mineralization and its geochemicalsimilarities to the Pacmanus site. From resources drilling, Nautilus Minerals reported an indicated and inferred mineral resource of 1030 kt and 1540 kt respectively for the Solwara 1 project at 2.6% Cu equivalent cut off grade. The PNG government has granted mining lease (ML154) to Nautilus Minerals to mine the Solwara 1 deposit in January 2012. If mining activity commences at the Solwara 1 site then Nautilus needs to address possible environmental impacts of water usage and discharge, water quality, sedimentation and dewatering and preservation of hydrothermal vent communities.

    Beschreibung: Barnacles of the superfamily Coronuloidea are obligate epibionts of various marine mammals, marine reptiles and large crustaceans. We used five molecular markers: 12S rDNA, 16S rDNA, 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA and Histone 3 to infer phylogenetic relationships among sixteen coronuloids, representing most of the recent genera of barnacles of this superfamily. Our analyses confirm the monophyly of Coronuloidea and that this superfamily and Tetraclitoidea are sister groups. The six-plated Austrobalanus clusters with these two superfamilies. Based on BEAST and ML trees, Austrobalanus is basal and sister to the Coronuloidea, but the NJ tree places Austrobalanus within the Tetraclitoidae, and in the MP tree it is sister to both Coronuloidea and Tetraclitoidae. Hence the position of Austrobalanus remains unresolved. Within the Coronuloidea we identified four clades. Chelonibia occupies a basal position within the Coronuloidea which is in agreement with previous studies. The grouping of the other clades does not conform to previous studies. Divergence time analyses show that some of the time estimates are congruent with the fossil record while some others are older, suggesting the possibility of gaps in the fossil record.

    Beschreibung: Several lines of evidence have previously been used to suggest that ice retreat after the last glacial maximum (LGM) resulted in regionally-increased levels of volcanic activity. It has been proposed that this increase in volcanism was globally significant, forming a substantial component of the post-glacial rise in atmospheric CO2, and thereby contributing to climatic warming. However, as yet there has been no detailed investigation of activity in glaciated volcanic arcs following the LGM. Arc volcanism accounts for 90% of present-day subaerial volcanic eruptions. It is therefore important to constrain the impact of deglaciation on arc volcanoes, to understand fully the nature and magnitude of global-scale relationships between volcanism and glaciation. The first part of this paper examines the post-glacial explosive eruption history of the Andean southern volcanic zone (SVZ), a typical arc system, with additional data from the Kamchatka and Cascade arcs. In all cases, eruption rates in the early post-glacial period do not exceed those at later times at a statistically significant level. In part, the recognition and quantification of what may be small (i.e. less than a factor of two) increases in eruption rate is hindered by the size of our datasets. These datasets are limited to eruptions larger than 0.1 km3, because deviations from power-law magnitude–frequency relationships indicate strong relative under-sampling at smaller eruption volumes. In the southern SVZ, where ice unloading was greatest, eruption frequency in the early post-glacial period is approximately twice that of the mid post-glacial period (although frequency increases again in the late post-glacial). A comparable pattern occurs in Kamchatka, but is not observed in the Cascade arc. The early post-glacial period also coincides with a small number of very large explosive eruptions from the most active volcanoes in the southern and central SVZ, consistent with enhanced ponding of magma during glaciation and release upon deglaciation. In comparison to non-arc settings, evidence of post-glacial increases in rates of arc volcanism is weak, and there is no need to invoke significantly increased melt production upon ice unloading, as occurred in areas such as Iceland. Non-arc volcanoes may therefore account for a relatively higher proportion of global volcanic emissions in the early post-glacial period than is suggested by the relative contributions of arc and non-arc settings at the present day. The second part of this paper critically examines global eruption records, in an effort to constrain global-scale changes in volcanic output since the LGM. Accurate interpretation of these records relies on correcting both temporal and spatial variability in eruption recording. In particular, very low recording rates, which also vary spatially by over two orders of magnitude, prevent precise, and possibly even accurate, quantitative analysis. For example, if we assume record completeness for the past century, the number of known eruptions (volcanic explosivity index ≥ 2) from some low-latitude regions, such as Indonesia, is approximately 1 in 20,000 (0.005%) for the period 5–20 ka.     Beschreibung: In this paper we used a steady-state ecosystem model that simulates both dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) cycling to study how the planktonic community structure, nutrient availability, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) loading affect these cycles in idealized oceanic, coastal, and estuarine surface waters. The model was able to reproduce DOM and planktonic biomass distributions, uptake rates, and production rates (including DOM) that fell within ranges reported for oceanic, coastal, and estuarine systems. Using a sensitivity analysis we show that DOM cycling was intricately tied to the biomass concentration, distribution, and productivity of plankton. The efficiency of nutrient remineralization and the availability of inflowing nutrients and DON also played a large role in DOM cycling. In these simulations the largest autochthonous source of DOC was always phytoplankton exudation while important sources of DON varied considerably. In the oceanic simulations heterotrophic bacteria were particularly important for mediating DOM cycling because they were the primary agents that controlled nutrient recycling and supply (i.e., strong bottom-up control). In contrast, in the estuarine simulations mortality (mainly from grazing and viral lysis) had the most influence on DOM production. However, DOM cycling was generally less dependent on interactions between plankton in the estuarine case because of high nutrient and DOM loading. The coastal simulations were somewhere in between. In all simulations competition between different size classes of phytoplankton also played an important role in DOM cycling.

    Beschreibung: Thirty-two new single crystal ages document 400 000 years of widespread explosive volcanism of historically active Nemrut Volcano towering over huge alkaline Lake Van (Eastern Anatolia). The dated deposits were selected to monitor the volcanic and compositional evolution of Nemrut Volcano through time and thus to provide a rigorous temporal framework for the tephra record of the PaleoVan Drilling Project. Tephra samples were taken from large-volume deposits or those that occur in medial to distal localities, well-exposed stratigraphic sections or from the initial phase of an eruptive sequence. Mainly fallout deposits were chosen because most ignimbrites show more complex and corroded feldspar populations owing to compositional zoning and magma mixing. Moreover, fallout deposits held the promise to be more clearly identifiable with-and correlatable to-〉300 tephra layers in the PaleoVan drill cores, even though commonly in amounts marginal or insufficient in thickness to allow well-supported single crystal dating. The crystals dated are dominantly anorthoclase, the main phenoctyst phase in the trachytic to rhyolitic, slightly to strongly peralkaline Nemrut magmas. Ages obtained so far range from ca. 400 ka to ca. 30 ka for Nemrut Volcano. The causes of significant changes in the frequency, volume and composition of tephra layers per unit time are discussed in terms of external (erosion, climate changes, geodynamic factors) and internal forcing (changes in magma supply and composition and incubation periods preceding large volume rhyolitic eruptions). For example, the low frequency of tephra layers deposited prior to ca. 200 ka may be due to low explosive activity, severe erosion between MIS 9 and MIS 11, or both. Nevertheless, the overall frequency of explosive eruptions appears to have increased during the past ca. 200 ka. We also recognize a slight peak in explosive eruptions during warm periods (e.g. MIS 5 and MIS 7) and speculate on lithospheric unloading triggering increased partial melting or magma reservoir unloading following massive glacier melting. The ages of 5 dated ignimbrites span ca. 250 000 years suggesting that Nemrut Volcano went through a polycyclic evolution with multiple caldera collapses and major pyroclastic flow eruptions, the oldest dated so far as 265 ka. The widely held view of the impressive Nemrut Caldera now dated to have formed at ca. 30 ka, as the main paroxysmal event during the evolution of the volcano is no longer tenable. Distinct and coherent compositional characteristics, especially in trace element concentrations, characterize several groups of trachytic tephras. We speculate that the growth of Nemrut Volcano caused the isolation of the Lake Van basin. On account of their mineralogical (anorthoclase, hedenbergite, fayalite, aenigmatite) and alkalic chemical compositions and large volume, dated Nemrut fallout tephras are likely to represent excellent markers in lakes and other sites of paleoclimatological or archeological interest in neighboring countries to the northeast of Lake Van as far as the Caspian Sea in what may be called the East Anatolian Tephra Province

    Beschreibung: We present results from an active-source, onshore–offshore seismic reflection/refraction transect acquired as part of the PETROBAR project (Petroleum-related studies of the Barents Sea region). The 700 km-long profile is oriented NW–SE, coincident with previously published multichannel seismic reflection profiles. We utilize layer-based raytracing in a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) inversion to determine a probabilistic velocity model constraining the sedimentary rocks, crystalline crust, and uppermost mantle in a complex tectonic regime. The profile images a wide range of crustal types and ages, fromProterozoic craton to Paleozoic to early Cenozoic rift basins; and volcanics related to Eocene continental breakupwith Greenland. Our analyses indicate a complex architecture of the crystalline crust along the profile,with crystalline crustal thicknesses ranging from43 kmbeneath the Varanger Peninsula to 12 kmbeneath the Bjørnøya Basin. Assuming an original, post-Caledonide crustal thickness of 35 km in the offshore area, we calculate the cumulative thinning (β) factors along the entire profile. The average β factor along the profile is 1.7 ± 0.1, suggesting 211–243 km of extension, consistent with the amount of overlap derived from published plate reconstructions. Local β factors approach 3, where Bjørnøya Basin reaches a depth of more than 13 km. Volcanics, carbonates, salt, diagenesis and metamorphism make deep sedimentary basin fill difficult to distinguish from original, pre-rift crystalline crust, and thus actual stretching may in places exceed our estimates.

    Beschreibung: We present the first neodymium isotope reconstruction of Mediterranean–Atlantic water exchange through the Moroccan (‘Rifian’) Corridor 8–5 Ma. This covers the late Miocene Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC); a period when progressive tectonic restriction of the Mediterranean–Atlantic seaways resulted in extreme, basin-wide Mediterranean salinity fluctuations. The Rifian Corridor was one of these seaways and until now, relatively poor age constraints existed for the timing of Corridor closure, due to the impact of uplift and erosion on the sedimentary record. The bottom water Nd isotope record from the continuous Bou Regreg Valley succession in northwest Morocco allows us to explore corridor connectivity with the Atlantic. Data from the interior and Mediterranean edge of the Rifian Corridor (respectively, the Taza–Guercif and Melilla basins, northern Morocco) provide new information on corridor shallowing and the provenance of water flowing through the seaway. As a result, we can constrain the age of Rifian Corridor closure to 6.64–6.44 Ma. We also find no evidence of the siphoning of Atlantic waters through the seaway (7.20–6.58 Ma). Our results cannot exclude the possibility that at times during the Messinian Salinity Crisis, Mediterranean Outflow Water reached the Atlantic.

    Beschreibung: Ferromanganese (Fe–Mn) crusts are strongly enriched relative to the Earth's lithosphere in many rare and critical metals, including Co, Te, Mo, Bi, Pt, W, Zr, Nb, Y, and rare-earth elements (REEs). Fe–Mn nodules are strongly enriched in Ni, Cu, Co, Mo, Zr, Li, Y, and REEs. Compared to Fe–Mn crusts, nodules are more enriched in Ni, Cu, and Li, with subequal amounts of Mo and crusts are more enriched in the other metals. The metal ions and complexes in seawater are sorbed onto the two major host phases, FeO(OH) with a positively charged surface and MnO2 with a negatively charged surface. Metals are also derived from diagenetically modified sediment pore fluids and incorporated into most nodules. Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS), especially those in arc and back-arc settings, can also be enriched in rare metals and metalloids, such as Cd, Ga, Ge, In, As, Sb, and Se. Metal grades for the elements of economic interest in SMS (Cu, Zn, Au, Ag) are much greater than those in land-based volcanogenic massive sulfides. However, their tonnage throughout the global ocean is poorly known and grade/tonnage comparisons with land-based deposits would be premature. The Clarion–Clipperton Fe–Mn Nodule Zone (CCZ) in the NE Pacific and the prime Fe–Mn crust zone (PCZ) in the central Pacific are the areas of greatest economic interest for nodules and crusts and grades and tonnages for those areas are moderately well known. We compare the grades and tonnages of nodules and crusts in those two areas with the global terrestrial reserves and resources. Nodules in the CCZ have more Tl (6000 times), Mn, Te, Ni, Co, and Y than the entire global terrestrial reserve base for those metals. The CCZ nodules also contain significant amounts of Cu, Mo, W, Li, Nb, and rare earth oxides (REO) compared to the global land-based reserves. Fe–Mn crusts in the PCZ have significantly more Tl (1700 times), Te (10 times more), Co, and Y than the entire terrestrial reserve base. Other metals of significance in the PCZ crusts relative to the total global land-based reserves are Bi, REO, Nb, and W. CCZ nodules and PCZ crusts are also compared with the two largest existing land-based REE mines, Bayan Obo in China and Mountain Pass in the USA. The land-based deposits are higher grade but lower tonnage deposits. Notably, both land-based deposits have 〈 1% heavy REEs (HREEs), whereas the CCZ has 26% HREEs and the PCZ, 18% HREEs; the HREEs have a much greater economic value. Radioactive Th concentrations are appreciably higher in the land-based deposits than in either type of marine deposit. A discussion of the differences between terrestrial and marine impacts and mine characteristics is also presented, including the potential for rare metals and REEs in marine deposits to be recovered as byproducts of mining the main metals of economic interest in nodules and crusts.

    Beschreibung: The simultaneous estimation of particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) and biogenic silica (BSi) export fluxes is key to the study of carbon export due to the hypothesized role of biominerals in the sinking of organic particles. This paper presents of the first attempts to measure downward fluxes of POC, PIC and BSi from the surface ocean using both the 234Th-238U and the 210Po-210Pb disequilibria and drifting sediments trap synchronously at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain in summer 2009. The combined use of the three techniques allowed us to analyze their suitability not only for POC flux estimates, but also as tracers of PIC and BSi fluxes. POC and biomineral/radionuclide ratios were measured in two size fractions to better understand differences between 234Th derived export and 210Po derived export. 210Po derived POC and biomineral fluxes were unexpectedly closer to POC and biomineral fluxes recorded by sediment traps than 234Th derived POC and biomineral fluxes which were higher than obtained from the other two approaches. We suggest that 210Po, because of its biogeochemical behavior, is a better proxy for POC and mineral fluxes than is 234Th in post bloom conditions. The contribution of smaller (1–53 μm) particles to flux is also considered in order to explain the differences in derived fluxes.

Abstract We present the results from a new grid of deep penetration multichannel seismic (MCS) profiles over the 280-km-long north-central segment of the Lesser Antilles subduction zone. The 14 dip-lines and 7 strike-lines image the topographical variations of (i) the subduction interplate décollement, (ii) the top of the arcward subducting Atlantic oceanic crust (TOC) under the huge accretionary wedge up to 7 km thick, and (iii) the trenchward dipping basement of the deeply buried forearc backstop of the Caribbean upper plate. The four northernmost long dip-lines of this new MCS grid reveal several-kilometre-high topographic variations of the TOC beneath the accretionary wedge offshore Guadeloupe and Antigua islands. They are located in the prolongation of those mapped on the Atlantic seafloor entering subduction, such as the Barracuda Ridge. This MCS grid also provides evidences on unexpected huge along-strike topographical variation of the backstop basement and of the deformation style affecting the outer forearc crust and sediments. Their mapping clearly indicates two principal areas of active deformation in the prolongation of the major Barracuda and Tiburon ridges and also other forearc basement highs that correspond to the prolongation of smaller oceanic basement highs recently mapped on the Atlantic seafloor. Although different in detail, the two main deforming forearc domains share similarities in style. The imaged deformation of the sedimentary stratification reveals a time- and space-dependent faulting by successive warping and unwarping, which deformation can be readily attributed to the forearc backstop sweeping over the two obliquely-oriented elongated and localized topographical ridges. The induced faulting producing vertical scarps in this transport does not require a regional arc-parallel extensional regime as proposed for the inner forearc domain, and may support a partitioned tectonic deformation such as in the case of an outer forearc sliver. A contrasted reflectivity of the sedimentary layering at the transition between the outer forearc and accretionary domains was resolved and used to define the seaward edge of the outer forearc basement interpreted as being possibly a proxy to the updip limit of the interplate seismogenic zone. Its mapping documents along-arc variations of some tens of kilometres of the subduction backstop with respect to the negative gravity anomaly commonly taken as marking the subduction trench. With the exception of the southernmost part, the newly mapped updip limit reaches 25 km closer to the trench, thus indicating a possible wider seismogenic zone over almost the whole length of the study area.

    Beschreibung: We examine the trajectories of 168 drifters as a proxy for Atlantic water flowing through the Nordic Seas. The drifters were released at or passed through the Svinøy section, off the west coast of Norway. For comparison, we generate a set of synthetic trajectories using a stochastic model, with a range of diffusivities. With the both sets, we determine the transit times of both drifters and particles from Svinøy to Arctic gateways: the Barents Sea and Spitsbergen. The mean arrival times to these locations are roughly 200 and 500 days, respectively. This implies ample time for cooling of the surface waters, which increases densities and permits subduction before reaching the Arctic. However a range of transit times is seen; some parcels reach Fram Strait in only 4 months while others are still in the southern Nordic Seas after 2 years. The results do not support the idea that temperature or salinity anomalies can exist as coherent packets. The drifters passing Svinøy, when treated as a group, quickly spread over large distances, mixing with water in the Norwegian and Lofoten Basins. Thus an anomaly entering the Nordic Seas would quickly be obliterated. However, the velocity of the clusters center of mass is consistent with anomaly propagation speeds inferred previously from hydrographic measurements, suggesting the observed variability is advective in nature.

    Beschreibung: Predicting the ecological causes and consequences of global climate change requires a variety of approaches, including the use of experiments, models, and surveys. Among experiments, mesocosms have become increasingly popular because they provide an important bridge between smaller, more tightly controlled, microcosm experiments (which can suffer from limited realism) and the greater biological complexity of natural systems (in which mechanistic relationships often cannot be identified). A new evaluation of the contribution of the mesocosm approach, its potential for future research, as well as its limitations, is timely. As part of this review, we constructed a new database of over 250 post-1990 studies that have explored different components of climate change across a range of organisational levels, scales, and habitats. Issues related to realism, reproducibility and control are assessed in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial systems. Some general patterns emerged, particularly at the ecosystem level, such as consistent and predictable effects on whole-system respiration rates. There are, however, also many seemingly idiosyncratic, contingent responses, especially at the community level, both within and among habitat types. These similarities and differences in both the drivers and responses highlight the need for caution before making generalisations. Finally, we assess future directions and prospects for new methodological advances and the need for greater international coordination and interdisciplinarity.

    Beschreibung: A new strategy to assess occurrences of marine gas hydrate has been implemented for the study area of the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, where two comprehensive gas hydrate drilling programs completed logging and coring at 18 sites. In this study we introduce multi-attribute analyses using five drill sites along a regional 2D seismic line to predict physical properties of P-wave velocity, density, and porosity required for gas hydrate saturation calculations. The five well-sites allow a reasonable cross-validation of the final multi-attribute-based prediction and to derive statistical parameters used in a Monte Carlo simulation of total gas hydrate volume in the study area. A similar analysis was completed for a 3D seismic volume around Site UBGH1-4. The crucial boundaries of the top of gas hydrate occurrence zone (TGHOZ) and base of the gas hydrate stability zone (BGHSZ) that are part of the gas hydrate petroleum system were calculated using constraints on geothermal gradient, pore-fluid salinity, type of hydrocarbon gases present, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content based on results from the two drilling expeditions carried out in the Ulleung Basin as well as other regional studies. Gas hydrate saturations were determined following the effective medium theory and using the sedimentological data obtained at the drill sites to define required mineral compositions. Seismic facies classification allowed the definition of occurrence of certain sediment types along the seismic data used in this study, and physical properties from the multi-attribute analyses and mineral compositions were assigned to each facies class. Statistical parameters of mean and standard deviation were estimated for each input parameter (P-wave velocity, bulk density, mineral compositions, grain density, density-porosity, TGHOZ, BGHSZ) in the gas hydrate saturation calculations based on individual uncertainties in the measurements. In the final step, a Monte Carlo simulation is used to calculate the total amount of gas hydrate (in m3) present in the study region for the two example data set of a 2D seismic line and one 3D seismic volume. The Monte Carlo simulation draws on the various statistical distributions of the input parameters and we have implemented 150,000 simulation runs in this study. The final histogram distributions of total volume of gas hydrate (in m3) allow determination of the mean, median, and mode values, as well as the 95% and 5% probability thresholds for gas hydrate volumes being present in the two study regions, though they are not meant as estimates of possible commercial amounts of gas associated with gas hydrates in the Ulleung Basin.

    Beschreibung: Authigenic carbonate precipitation occurs within marine sediments where sulfate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation occurs. Geochemical and isotopic analyses of authigenic carbonates are commonly used as indicators of carbon sources and environmental conditions present during carbonate formation, but burial diagenesis and recrystallization can overprint these signals. Plane polarized light (PPL) and cathodoluminescent (CL) petrography allows for detailed characterization of carbonate phases and their subsequent alteration. Petrographic, isotopic, and geochemical characteristics of modern offshore authigenic carbonates from central and northern Cascadia are compared with Oligocene–Pliocene fossil seep carbonates uplifted on the Olympic Peninsula. Coupled analyses show the value and complexity of separating primary vs. secondary signals with relevance to understanding fluid-burial history in methane seep provinces on tectonically active convergent margins. The modern, offshore, near-seafloor diagenetic environment (S. Hydrate Ridge and Barkley Canyon) is dominated by acicular and microcrystalline aragonite and high-Mg calcite (HMC, 〉 12 mol % Mg). PPL and CL data illustrate that aragonite and HMC phases recrystallize to intermediate-Mg calcite (IMC, 5–12 mol% Mg) during burial and diagenesis and eventually to low-Mg calcite (LMC, 〈 5 mol% Mg). This diagenetic progression is accompanied by a decrease in Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios. Typically an increase in Ba/Ca is consistent with a high-barium content of the methane-bearing pore fluids that drive recrystallization. CL images also discern primary carbonates with high Mn/Ca ratios, including biogenic peloids, from secondary phases related to deep fluid migration through high permeability conduits. In the secondary phases, the Mn/Ca reflects Mn-enrichment that characterizes deep sourced fluids venting at Barkley Canyon. Mn-enrichment is accompanied by depletion in 18O attributable to elevated fluid temperatures during recrystallization.

    Beschreibung: Highlights: • First insight into the long-term development of cold-water corals in the Alboran Sea • Extensive cold-water coral growth in the Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene • Periods of cold-water corals growth are linked to enhanced marine productivity. Abstract: Cold-water corals are common along the Moroccan continental margin off Melilla in the Alboran Sea (western Mediterranean Sea), where they colonise and largely cover mound and ridge structures. Radiocarbon ages of the reef-forming coral species Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata sampled from those structures, reveal that they were prolific in this area during the last glacial–interglacial transition with pronounced growth periods covering the Bølling–Allerød interstadial (13.5–12.8 ka BP) and the Early Holocene (11.3–9.8 ka BP). Their proliferation during these periods is expressed in vertical accumulation rates for an individual coral ridge of 266–419 cm ka− 1 that consists of coral fragments embedded in a hemipelagic sediment matrix. Following a period of coral absence, as noted in the records, cold-water corals re-colonised the area during the Mid-Holocene (5.4 ka BP) and underwater photographs indicate that corals currently thrive there. It appears that periods of sustained cold-water coral growth in the Melilla Coral Province were closely linked to phases of high marine productivity. The increased productivity was related to the deglacial formation of the most recent organic rich layer in the western Mediterranean Sea and to the development of modern circulation patterns in the Alboran Sea.

    Beschreibung: During the Second Gas Hydrate Drilling Expedition in the Ulleung Basin (UBGH2), pore fluids were collected from sites that sampled sediments from the continental slope to the basin center, and included locations within and outside seismic identified chimney like features. At five non-chimney sites established during the UBGH2, discrete excursions to low Cl− concentrations within the gas hydrate occurrence zone (GHOZ) are associated with water enriched in δD and δ18O, as expected from gas hydrate dissociation during core recovery. Estimates of gas hydrate saturation values (Sh) based on Cl− and δD values are in good agreement, and show that when gas hydrate occurs in discrete horizons or within strata-bound fractures throughout the GHOZ, it occupies 5–65% of the pore space. Fluids recovered from three sites characterized by seismic inferred chimneys show massive hydrate accumulation near the seafloor, accompanied by the formation of shallow Cl− rich brines with δD and δ18O values lower than seawater. Chemical and isotopic data from fluids sampled at all drilled sites reveal significant fluid freshening below the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ). The distribution of Cl−, K+ and δD indicate that the observed freshening is predominantly caused by clay mineral dehydration (illitization). Previously reported heat flow values in the center of the basin indicate that the sediments deeper than 800 mbsf (meter below seafloor) are warm enough to expect clay diagenesis with the onset of smectite-to-illite transformation. Source fluid temperatures 〉70 °C are confirmed through the use of Na+–Li+ and Mg2+–Li+ geothermometry. Based on these observations we propose the following scenario for the evolution of formation fluids in the Ulleung Basin where high formation temperatures and rapid sedimentation at the basin center, led to sediment compaction and clay dehydration reactions that result in fluid overpressures and associated fracturing of the formation. Sediment fractures and fluid (possible gas) migration in the chimney features, imaged in seismic records, are consistent with our postulated upward transport of fluids from 〉800 m depth though the GHSZ and to the seafloor.

    Beschreibung: The Menez Gwen hydrothermal vents, located on the flanks of a small young volcanic structure in the axial valley of the Menez Gwen seamount, are the shallowest known vent systems on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that host chemosynthetic communities. Although visited several times by research cruises, very few images have been published of the active sites, and their spatial dimensions and morphologies remain difficult to comprehend. We visited the vents on the eastern flank of the small Menez Gwen volcano during cruises with RV Poseidon (POS402, 2010) and RV Meteor (M82/3, 2010), and used new bathymetry and imagery data to provide first detailed information on the extents, surface morphologies, spatial patterns of the hydrothermal discharge and the distribution of dominant megafauna of five active sites. The investigated sites were mostly covered by soft sediments and abundant white precipitates, and bordered by basaltic pillows. The hydrothermally-influenced areas of the sites ranged from 59 to 200 m(2). Geo-referenced photomosaics and video data revealed that the symbiotic mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus was the dominant species and present at all sites. Using literature data on average body sizes and biomasses of Menez Gwen B. azoricus, we estimated that the B. azoricus populations inhabiting the eastern flank sites of the small volcano range between 28,640 and 50,120 individuals with a total biomass of 50 to 380 kg wet weight. Based on modeled rates of chemical consumption by the symbionts, the annual methane and sulfide consumption by B. azoricus could reach 1760 mol CH4 yr(-1) and 11,060 mol H2S yr(-1). We propose that the chemical consumption by B. azoricus over at the Menez Gwen sites is low compared to the natural release of methane and sulfide via venting fluids.

    Beschreibung: The identification of areas of natural gas hydrate occurrence, defining its concentration and regional distribution, as well as understanding the processes that control gas hydrate formation is a crucial component of regional gas hydrate assessments. In this study, we incorporate an additional element into a regional assessment strategy by including the depositional environment defined through seismic facies classes. The seismic facies classification is attempted using regional 2D seismic data and a 3D seismic volume, as well as core and log-data from two gas hydrate drilling expeditions carried out in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, to conduct a fully integrated gas hydrate assessment. The facies classification described in this study is part of a procedure to conduct an assessment including: (1) Lithologic description of the recovered core and describe the deposition character of the sediment facies identified; (2) seismic facies classification using 2D and 3D seismic data and their derived various seismic attributes; (3) Linking seismic facies classes to core-derived sedimentological descriptions to define the host-strata most favourable for gas hydrate occurrences; (4) Defining reservoir physical properties and linking these to seismic facies classes for reservoir property description; (5) Calculating regional elements of the gas hydrate petroleum system (top of gas hydrate occurrence and base of gas hydrate stability); (6) Merging seismic facies and reservoir properties, definition of the top and base of the gas hydrate stability zone, to calculate gas hydrate saturations in each seismic facies and the total volume of gas hydrate present in the study area; (7) Defining probabilistic elements of the predicted volume of gas hydrate by combining statistical information of the individual input parameters through exhaustive Monte Carlo simulations. The seismic facies classification algorithm used in this study is based on identifying clusters (classes) that show similar properties in the seismic data and derived attribute characteristics. Our classification scheme uses seven seismic attributes (amplitude, instantaneous frequency and amplitude (also referred to as envelope), sweetness, acoustic impedance, thin-bed- and parallel-bedding indicator) and incorporates the use of principle component analysis for data reduction. The achieved classifications are overall robust and yield identical facies classes for the co-located 2D and 3D data. Linking the seismic facies classes to the recovered core and sedimentological descriptions results in a sedimentological interpretation of the seismic facies. Cross-plots of individual components as well as analysing the Eigen-vectors and -values from the principle component analysis (PCA) helps understand the physical meaning of these seismic facies classes and their seismic character. The five facies classes assigned to the 3D volume and 2D seismic line after PCA represent the mass transport deposit (MTD) units (class #1), hemipelagic mud with some sandy turbidite (class #2), hemipelagic mud with many sandy turbidites (class #3), as well as water-bearing mud with few sand layers and occurring mostly at shallow depth near the seafloor or beneath the base of the gas hydrate stability zone (classes #4 and #5). Within the study area and seismic data sets used, gas hydrate occurrences are only linked to facies classes #2 and #3.

    Beschreibung: Gas hydrate was recovered in the Andaman Sea along the eastern coast of the Andaman Islands during the India National Gas Hydrate Program (NGHP) Expedition-01 at Site NGHP-01-17. Coring confirmed gas hydrate occurs predominantly in discrete volcanic ash layers. Pore water chemistry, electrical resistivity and P-wave velocity logs are used to estimate gas hydrate saturations at Site NGHP-01-17. Gas hydrate saturation estimated from chloride concentrations shows values up to ∼85% of the pore space for distinct ash layers from ∼270 m below seafloor to the base of gas hydrate stability zone (BGHSZ). Gas hydrate saturations estimated from the electrical resistivity and acoustic velocity logs using standard empirical relations and modeling approaches are comparable to each other, but saturations are only ∼20% of the pore space on average. This much lower gas hydrate saturation estimate from the log data is a result of overall reduced resolution of the logging tools relative to the typically 20–30 cm thick hydrate-bearing ash layers. Available 2D multi-channel seismic data were also analyzed and a bottom-simulating reflector (BSR) was imaged along several seismic profiles. The depth of the BSR is more than 600 m along the seismic line crossing Site NGHP-01-17, which makes this one of the deepest BSRs observed worldwide. To understand the unusual depth of the BSR, we mapped its depth and estimated heat flow from the BSR depth using a simple conductive model. BSR-derived heat flow values range from ∼12 to ∼41.5 mW/m2 from the study area and follow the bathymetry trend of dominant North–South ridges and can be explained with the east-ward trending increase in heat-flow toward the current seafloor spreading center. We also modeled the BGHSZ to analyze the linkage between gas hydrate occurrences in the Andaman Sea and its relation to the tectonic activity. Our analysis suggests an extensively variable BGHSZ in the Andaman Sea controlled mainly by overall low geothermal gradients. Consistent local minor variations were observed with lower heat flow values over prominent topographic highs and higher values in valleys/troughs due to focusing and defocusing effects of the topography.

    Beschreibung: The Second Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Drilling Expedition (UBGH2) recovered various forms of gas-hydrate bearing sediments from 10 drill sites in the lower slope and basin floor of the Ulleung Basin. To characterize the gas-hydrate occurrences and the properties of the host sediments, whole-round core samples were taken from portions of recovered cores determined to be hydrate-bearing based on infrared (IR) scanning. These samples were further characterized by a variety of shipboard experiments such as imaging of the sediments with hand-held IR and visual cameras, measurements of pore water chlorinity within and around IR inferred cold regions in the core and grain-size analysis of pore-water squeeze cakes. Sediment compositions of selected samples were further characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopes during post-cruise analysis. The shipboard and post-cruise analysis results collectively indicate that the recovered gas hydrates mainly occur as 1) “pore-filling” type bounded by discrete silty sand to sandy silt layers, 2) “fracture-filling” veins and nodules, or 3) “disseminated” type in silt. In addition, minor but significant variation in gas hydrate concentrations were observed in diatomaceous silt where gas hydrates occur as “pore-filling” material in layers dominated by intact diatom frustules. Gas hydrate accumulations of “fracture-filling” type occur predominantly in regions where acoustic blanking features in the seismic record suggest gas migration from below the gas hydrate stability zone. Results from the UBGH2 core studies along with the analysis of similar samples from other expeditions, including those executed by the Ocean Drilling Program, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, and the First Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Drilling Expedition, greatly improved our understanding of lithologic controls on marine gas hydrate occurrences.

    Beschreibung: As a part of Korean National Gas Hydrate Program, the Second Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Drilling Expedition (UBGH2) was conducted from 9 July to 30 September, 2010 in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, offshore Korea using the D/V Fugro Synergy. The UBGH2 was performed to understand the distribution of gas hydrates as required for a resource assessment and to find potential candidate sites suitable for a future offshore production test, especially targeting gas hydrate-bearing sand bodies in the basin. The UBGH2 sites were distributed across most of the basin and were selected to target mainly sand-rich turbidite deposits. The 84-day long expedition consisted of two phases. The first phase included logging-while-drilling/measurements-while-drilling (LWD/MWD) operations at 13 sites. During the second phase, sediment cores were collected from 18 holes at 10 of the 13 LWD/MWD sites. Wireline logging (WL) and vertical seismic profile (VSP) data were also acquired after coring operations at two of these 10 sites. In addition, seafloor visual observation, methane sensing, as well as push-coring and sampling using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) were conducted during both phases of the expedition. Recovered gas hydrates occurred either as pore-filling medium associated with discrete turbidite sand layers, or as fracture-filling veins and nodules in muddy sediments. Gas analyses indicated that the methane within the sampled gas hydrates is primarily of biogenic origin. This paper provides a summary of the operational and scientific results of the UBGH2 expedition as described in 24 papers that make up this special issue of the Journal of Marine and Petroleum Geology.

    Beschreibung: Multi-channel seismic reflection and well-log data from the Ulleung Basin, East Sea reveal several seismic signatures indicative of gas-hydrate occurrence in the Ulleung Basin that are associated with vertically and/or laterally stacked mass-transport complexes. The seismic indicators include (a) a bottom simulating reflector (BSR), (b) a seismic chimney, (c) high amplitude reflections within the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ), (d) acoustic blanking, (e) enhanced reflections below the BSR, and (f) seafloor gas-escape features. The BSR, associated with enhanced reflections below, is most commonly found over much of the basin indicating a physiochemical boundary of gas hydrates overlying free gas. Seismic chimneys are characterized by velocity pull-up and reduced reflectivity on the seismic sections, which appear to be caused by active migration of fluid gas vertically into the GHSZ. The logging data retrieved from the seismic chimneys showed elevated electrical resistivity (〉80 Ohm-m) and P-wave velocity (〉2000 m/s), indicating the presence of gas hydrate. Another seismic characteristic observed in gas hydrate bearing sediments is the strong amplitude reflections, defined by the relatively high reflectivity within the GHSZ. Acoustic blanking is likely to be the result of hydrate accumulation in the sediments causing a significant reduction of acoustic impedance contrast between sedimentary layers. Where the upward migrating gas seeps into the deep water column, seafloor pockmarks and mud mounds may be formed. Gas hydrate was recovered from the Ulleung Basin, East Sea in 2010 during the Second Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Drilling Expedition (UBGH2) under the Korean National Gas Hydrate Program. Based on the results, gas-fluids migrate into the GHSZ through two distinct pathways: (1) structural conduits which include fault and fracture systems associated with seismic chimneys and (2) stratigraphic conduits associated with inclined turbidite/hemipelagic layers. Two types of gas-hydrate occurrence were identified in the basin: (1) a stratally-bound type (pore filling) within turbidite sand layers and (2) a locally concentrated type (massive, nodule or fracture filling) within upward-growing chimneys associated with near vertical faults. Relatively high concentrations of gas hydrate, however, tend to occur in localized seismic chimneys, rather than in the strata-related features. The successful recovery indicates that the Ulleung Basin provides favorable conditions for gas-hydrate formation.

    Beschreibung: Gas hydrate saturation estimates were obtained from an Archie-analysis of the Logging-While-Drilling(LWD) electrical resistivity logs under consideration of the regional geological framework of sediment deposition in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, of Korea. Porosity was determined from the LWD bulk density log and core-derived values of grain density. In situ measurements of pore-fluid salinity as well as for-mation temperature define a background trend for pore-fluid resistivity at each drill site. The LWD data were used to define sets of empirical Archie-constants for different depth-intervals of the logged borehole at all sites drilled during the second Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Drilling Expedition (UBGH2). A clustering of data with distinctly different trend-lines is evident in the cross-plot of porosity and formation factor for all sites drilled during UBGH2. The reason for the clustering is related to the difference between hemipelagic sediments (mostly covering the top w 100 mbsf) and mass-transport deposits (MTD) and/or the occurrence of biogenic opal. For sites located in the north-eastern portion of the Ulleung Basin a set of individual Archie-parameters for a shallow depth interval (hemipelagic) and a deeper MTD zone was achieved. The deeper zone shows typically higher resistivities for the same range of porosities seen in the upper zone, reflecting a shift in sediment properties. The presence of large amounts of biogenic opal (up to and often over 50% as defined by XRD data) was especially observed at Sites UBGH2-2_1 and UBGH2-2_2 (as well as UBGH1-9 from a previous drilling expedition in 2007). The boundary between these two zones can also easily be identified in gamma-ray logs, which also show unusually low readings in the opal-rich interval. Only by incorporating different Archie-parameters for the different zones a reasonable estimate of gas hydrate saturation was achieved that also matches re- sults from other techniques such as pore- fluid freshening, velocity-based calculations, and pressure-core degassing experiments. Seismically, individual boundaries between zones were determined using a grid of regional 2D seismic data. Zoning from the Archie-analysis for sites in the south-western portion of the Ulleung Basin was also observed, but at these sites it is linked to individually stacked MTDs only and does not reflect a mineralogical occurrence of biogenic opal or hemipelagic sedimentation. The individual MTD events represent differently compacted material often associated with a strong decrease in porosity(and increase in density), warranting a separate set of empirical Archie-parameters.

    Beschreibung: Logging-while-drilling (LWD) and wire-line (WL) velocity data from the second Korean Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Drilling Expedition in 2010 (UBGH2) were used to predict gas hydrate saturations using the effective medium theory (EMT) at four representative sites: We used Sites UBGH2-10 and UBGH2-6 where gas hydrate occurs mostly within strata-bound sandy turbidite layers. Sites UBGH2-2_1 and UBGH2-2_2 are used to investigate a typical cold vent setting and fracture-dominated systems. We first use a new technique to correct the LWD velocity data within the shallower portions of the borehole (typically upper 60–100 m below seafloor, mbsf) where the nature of soft sediments often results in erroneous low velocity readings of the LWD tool around values between 1350 m/s and 1400 m/s. Using the Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) data, a smooth background velocity trend is defined, onto which the LWD data is projected. After this correction, the LWD velocity data of all four sites were used to estimate gas hydrate saturation values using the EMT for a 2-phase mineral-assemblage of 90% clay and 10% quartz only, as well as a detailed mineralogy based on the core XRD data. Both these estimates are then compared to the estimates from the electrical resistivity data using an empirical Archie-analysis. The results from EMT and Archie are on average the same, when gas hydrate occurs as a pore-filling medium within thick sediment layers of homogenous nature, such as that encountered at Site UBGH2-10 where saturations are about 60% of the pore space in an interval of 124–128 mbsf. If gas hydrate occurs in thin sand layers where the thickness of the layer is at or smaller than the vertical resolution of the velocity logging tool, Archie-based results are higher than the EMT-based results due to the higher resolution of the resistivity logging-tool. In cold vent settings with fracture-dominated gas hydrate settings (such as that investigated at Sites UBGH2-2_1 and 2-2_2). Archie-based results are non-reliable and strongly over-estimated due to the anisotropic effect of near-vertical hydrate-filled fractures. In such cold vent settings, velocity-based techniques using the EMT are the preferred method to estimate the gas hydrate saturations. At Site UBGH2-2_1, hydrate saturations are on average 5–10% of the pore-space and even lower at Site UBGH2-2_2 (less than 5% on average).

    Beschreibung: Sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is the key sedimentary microbial process limiting methane emissions from marine sediments and methane seeps. In this study, we investigate how the presence of low-organic content sediment influences the capacity and efficiency of AOM at Bullseye vent, a gas hydrate-bearing cold seep offshore of Vancouver Island, Canada. The upper 8 m of sediment contains 〈0.4 wt.% total organic carbon (OC) and primarily consists of glacially-derived material that was deposited 14,900–15,900 yrs BP during the retreat of the late Quaternary Cordilleran Ice Sheet. We hypothesize this aged and exceptionally low-OC content sedimentary OM is biologically refractory, thereby limiting degradation of non-methane OM by sulfate reduction and maximizing methane consumption by sulfate-dependent AOM. A radiocarbon-based dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) isotope mass balance model demonstrates that respired DIC in sediment pore fluids is derived from a fossil carbon source that is devoid of 14C. A fossil origin for the DIC precludes remineralization of non-fossil OM present within the sulfate zone as a significant contributor to pore water DIC, suggesting that nearly all sulfate is available for anaerobic oxidation of fossil seep methane. Methane flux from the SMT to the sediment water interface in a diffusion-dominated flux region of Bullseye vent was, on average, 96% less than at an OM-rich seep in the Gulf of Mexico with a similar methane flux regime. Evidence for enhanced methane oxidation capacity within OM-poor sediments has implications for assessing how climate-sensitive reservoirs of sedimentary methane (e.g., gas hydrate) will respond to ocean warming, particularly along glacially-influenced mid and high latitude continental margins.

    Beschreibung: In this work, liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC–ESI-TOF–MS) has been applied to screen bioactive metabolites in shoot extract of the medicinal halophyte Zygophyllum album. Among 10 compounds identified (saponins, flavonoids and sterols) five were reported for the first time in Z. album. Furthermore, novel biological activities of hexane, dichloromethane and methanolic extracts were assessed. Results showed that methanolic extract exhibit the highest antioxidant activity using in vitro ORAC test and anti-inflammatory activity, inhibiting by 84.8% NO release in RAW264.7 macrophages. However, dichloromethane extract proved the utmost antioxidant activity in cell (WS1) based-assay (IC50 = 57 μg/ml) and interesting anticancer capacity against human lung carcinoma (A-549) and colon adenocarcinoma (DLD-1) cells (IC50 = 37 and 48 μg/ml, respectively). These findings can be attributed to the presence of triterpenes, flavonoids and sterols in Z. album, which are widely known as powerful antioxidants and used in various industrial fields.

    Beschreibung: During drilling in 2010 in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, Logging-While-Drilling (LWD) was conducted for thirteen sites. LWD data shows various characteristics indicating presence of gas hydrate-bearing sediments. In particular, a series seismic chimney sites are characterized by anomalous log data (i.e. high resistivity and velocity values), compared to surrounding marine sediments. At chimney sites, the resistivity and velocity log values are over 200 Ω-m and 3000 m/s, respectively. Moreover, log values of low density (less than 1.1 g/cm3) indicating the presence of massive hydrates also correlate with intervals with the highest resistivity and velocity. Gas hydrates at the seismic inferred chimney sites occurred within inclined fractures in the mud dominated sediments. These gas hydrate-filled fractures were identified on LWD resistivity images and X-ray images of pressure cores. The gas hydrate-filled fracture intervals coincide with high measured resistivity intervals at three sites (Sites UBGH2-3, UBGH2-7, UBGH2-11). In most cases, high measured resistivity translated into high hydrate saturations via Archie's relationship; but the high saturations derived from the Archie's relationship appear to overestimate gas hydrate saturations when compared to pressure core samples and acoustic log measurements. Also, in intervals with inclined gas hydrate-filled fractures (e.g., UBGH2-3), there is notable separation between phase-shift and attenuation resistivity logs, with 2 MHz resistivity measurements being significantly higher than 400 kHz resistivity measurements. In this study, the analysis of fractures with dip angles greater than 30° on the resistivity log-images show dip angles between 43 and 63° in average for the three sites examined. The dip azimuth of the fractures at Sites UBGH2-3 and UBGH2-7 dominate westerly to southwestern direction, while the fractures at Site UBGH2-11 are characterized by no preferred orientation. This fracture pattern indicates that maximum horizontal stress direction at the time of fracture formation was not constant. In addition, the differential compaction of the sediments after deposited may be contributed to the development of fracture.

    Beschreibung: Bottom currents and their margin-shaping character became a central aspect in the research field of sediment dynamics and paleoceanography during the last decades due to their potential to form large contourite depositional systems (CDS), consisting of both erosive and depositional features. A major CDS at the northern Argentine continental margin was studied off the Rio de la Plata River by means of seismo- and hydro-acoustic methods including conventional and high-resolution seismic, parametric echosounder and single and swath bathymetry. Additionally, hydrographic data were considered allowing jointly interpretation of morphosedimentary features and the oceanographic framework, which is dominated by the presence of the dynamic and highly variable Brazil-Malvinas Confluence. We focus on three regional contouritic terraces identified on the slope in the vicinity of the Mar del Plata Canyon. The shallowest one, the La Plata Terrace (similar to 500 m), is located at the Brazil Current/Antarctic Intermediate Water interface characterized by its deep and distinct thermocline. In similar to 1200 m water depth the Ewing Terrace correlates with the Antarctic Intermediate Water/Upper Circumpolar Deep Water interface. At the foot of the slope in similar to 3500 m the Necochea Terrace marks the transition between Lower Circumpolar Deep Water and Antarctic Bottom Water during glacial times. Based on these correlations, a comprehensive conceptual model is proposed, in which the onset and evolution of contourite terraces is controlled by short- and long-term variations of water mass interfaces. We suggest that the terrace genesis is strongly connected to the turbulent current pattern typical for water mass interfaces. Furthermore, the erosive processes necessary for terrace formation are probably enhanced due to internal waves, which are generated along strong density gradients typical for water mass interfaces. The terraces widen through time due to locally focused, partly helical currents along the steep landward slopes and more tabular conditions seaward along the terrace surface. Considering this scheme of contourite terrace development, lateral variations of the morphosedimentary features off northern Argentina can be used to derive the evolution of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence on geological time scales. We propose that the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence in modern times is located close to its southernmost position in the Quaternary, while its center was shifted northward during cold periods

    Beschreibung: Highlights • We objectively identify and remove unconstrained parameters from a marine ecosystem model. • Optimal model complexity is identified using three model selection metrics. • As many as 14 of the model’s 30 parameters can be removed, with no significant reduction in model-data misfit. • Optimal model structures and parameters are different at two different North Atlantic locations. • The specialised structures and parameters at each site may be unsuitable for new environments The degree of structural complexity that should be incorporated in marine biogeochemical models is unclear. We know that the marine ecosystem is complex, and that its observed behaviour is attributable to the interaction of a large number of separate processes, but observations are scarce and often insufficient to constrain more than a small number of model parameters. This issue is addressed using a novel algorithm that systematically removes model processes that are not constrained by observations. The algorithm is applied to a one-dimensional, eight component ecosystem-biogeochemistry model at two North Atlantic time-series sites. Between 11 and 14 of the 30 model parameters can be removed at each site with no significant reduction in the model’s ability to fit upper ocean (0–200 m) biogeochemical tracer and productivity data. The statistically optimal model structures and parameters provide estimates of the most likely state variables and fluxes at each site. Differences in these estimates between the two sites indicate that the optimal models are specialised to both the physical environment and the assimilated observations. At each site the heavily reduced models may thus be suitable for diagnostic purposes but may not be sufficiently complex for more general applications, such as in global ocean general circulation models, or for predicting the response of marine systems to environmental change.

    Beschreibung: We examined seasonal and interannual patterns of zooplankton functional groups in the Balearic Sea from 1994 to 2003 and revealed a conspicuous increase in zooplankton variance at community and population levels. The change occurred in 1999-2000, and paralleled modifications in the North Atlantic climate that cascaded down affecting the water column thermal gradient in the Balearic Sea.     Beschreibung: The Anarak area belongs to an ophiolitic belt along the northern border of the Central-East Iranian Microcontinent, and is thought to contain fragments of the former Paleotethys and Neotethys oceans. A wide range of meta-igneous rocks from the Late Paleozoic to Triassic Anarak Metamorphic Complex (AMC) and nearby Meraji area have been studied to constrain the origins and modes of emplacement of oceanic remnants in Central Iran. Our samples occur as layers and lenses embedded in extensive sequences of deformed meta-sediments and smaller bodies of serpentinized ultramafic rocks. Petrographical and geochemical data combined with field and satellite observations allow recognition of seven types of meta-igneous rocks preserved from low grade to blueschist facies conditions. Their origins based on relative abundances of immobile trace elements include subduction zone, mid-ocean ridge, ocean intraplate, and continental rift settings. These data and existing geochronological constraints show the AMC formed an accretionary complex formed/exhumed incrementally during the Carboniferous, Permo-triassic and Triassic. Igneous rocks from Meraji formed in the Early Devonian due to opening of the Paleotethys, and belong to a rift sequence extending over 300 km along the edge of the Central-East Iranian Microcontinent. The AMC and nearby rock associations record the evolution of the Paleotethys during a complete Wilson Cycle between ca. 450 and 225 Ma, with implications for: (1) continental rifting; (2) ocean opening; (3) subduction initiation; (4) ocean intraplate and continued mid-ocean volcanism; (5) ridge subduction; and (6) final closure of the ocean during continent–continent collision. Alternate interpretations of the Anarak metabasites are possible, but require radical departures from the widely accepted model for tectonic evolution of the Paleotethys, with the existence of Paleotethyan backarc basin(s) and Permian or earlier collision of continental blocks in Central Iran. In any case, our results show accretionary complexes preserved along suture zones contain an important record of the evolution of oceanic crust from ancient ocean basins.

    Beschreibung: Analysis of multi-channel seismic reflection and chirp data from Lake Van (eastern Turkey) reveals various shallow gas indicators including seismic chimneys, enhanced reflections, bright spots, mud volcanoes, pockmarks, and acoustic blanking. The enhanced reflections, suggesting the presence of free gas, are most dominant and observed at more than 200 locations. They are characterized by very-high amplitude reflections and occur in both deep and shallow sedimentary sections. Some enhanced reflections are accompanied by very subtle seafloor expressions such as mounds, which may suggest active venting activity. Seismic chimneys or columnar zones of amplitude blanking have been observed in much of the surveyed area. Seismic chimneys in the study area cannot be associated with any known faults that would act as migration pathways for deep fluids. This suggests that the observed structures in Lake Van sediments allow the preferential emission of gases which might be for a large share of biogenic origin. The acoustic blanking, characterized by transparent or chaotic seismic facies, is seen in the eastern part of the lake. The lakeward edge of the acoustic blanking largely coincides with the 100 m water depth contour, indicating that (past) changes of the hydrostatic pressure may be responsible for the distribution of these anomalies. Mound-like features, interpreted as mud volcanoes, occur in a few locations. The presence of these features may suggest active gas emission. Very strong amplitude anomalies or bright spots with negative polarity, indicating gas-charged zones, are also seen in a number of locations. Pockmarks are observed only in the northeastern part of the study area. The scarce occurrence of pockmarks in the study area might be ascribed to a higher permeability of the lake sediments or to the absence of the substrate/reservoir providing the critical mass of gases necessary to produce such features. Turbidites, tephra layers, and deltaic deposits have the potential to provide ideal conditions to allow the sediments to act as a gas reservoir.

    Beschreibung: Non erosive margins are characterized by heavily sedimented trenches which obscure the morphological expression of the outer rise; a forebulge formed by the bending of the subducting oceanic lithosphere seaward of the trench. Depending on the flexural rigidity (D) of the oceanic lithosphere and the thickness of the trench sedimentary fill, sediment loading can affect the lithospheric downward deflection in the vicinity of the trench and hence the amount of sediment subducted. We used seismic and bathymetric data acquired off south central Chile, from which representative flexural rigidities are estimated and the downward deflection of the oceanic Nazca plate is studied. By flexural modeling we found that efficient sediment subduction preferentially occurs in weak oceanic lithosphere (low D), whereas wide accretionary prisms are usually formed in rigid oceanic lithosphere (high D). In addition, well developed forebulges in strong oceanic plates behaves as barrier to seaward transportation of turbidites, whereas the absence of a forebulge in weak oceanic plates facilitates seaward turbidite transportation for distances 〉200 km.

    Beschreibung: oral reefs face multiple anthropogenic threats, from pollution and overfishing to the dual effects of greenhouse gas emissions: rising sea temperature and ocean acidification [1]. While the abundance of coral has declined in recent decades [2, 3], the implications for humanity are difficult to quantify because they depend on ecosystem function rather than the corals themselves. Most reef functions and ecosystem services are founded on the ability of reefs to maintain their three-dimensional structure through net carbonate accumulation [4]. Coral growth only constitutes part of a reef's carbonate budget; bioerosion processes are influential in determining the balance between net structural growth and disintegration [5, 6]. Here, we combine ecological models with carbonate budgets and drive the dynamics of Caribbean reefs with the latest generation of climate models. Budget reconstructions using documented ecological perturbations drive shallow (6-10 m) Caribbean forereefs toward an increasingly fragile carbonate balance. We then projected carbonate budgets toward 2080 and contrasted the benefits of local conservation and global action on climate change. Local management of fisheries (specifically, no-take marine reserves) and the watershed can delay reef loss by at least a decade under "business-as-usual" rises in greenhouse gas emissions. However, local action must be combined with a low-carbon economy to prevent degradation of reef structures and associated ecosystem services.

    Beschreibung: We combine the stable silicon isotope composition (δ30Si) of diatoms and the radiogenic neodymium isotope compositions (εNd) of past seawater extracted from the authigenic fraction of the sediments (Mn–Fe coatings of particles and benthic foraminifers), as well as the radiogenic isotope compositions (Nd, Sr) of the detrital material itself to reconstruct silicic acid utilisation, water mass mixing, and upwelling intensity from the same marine sediments in the Peruvian upwelling region during the past 20,000 years. Additionally, the sedimentary signals were compared to the water column isotope compositions. Along the Peruvian shelf, the dissolved εNd in the water column ranges from −5.7 to +0.6. The corresponding εNd signatures of the coatings and the benthic foraminifers of the surface sediments range from −4.5 to +1.8 and from −2.5 to +2.2, respectively. The detrital εNd (87Sr/86Sr) signatures range from −6.3 to 0 (0.70508–0.71049). All phases show a trend from more radiogenic εNd values in the north towards less radiogenic values in the south broadly reflecting local weathering inputs and hinterland geology. The εNd signatures of the coatings extracted from sediment core SO147-106KL located in the present day centre of coastal upwelling near 12°S have been essentially constant (−1.5) throughout the past 20,000 years, while the detrital εNd (87Sr/86Sr) varied between values of −0.7 (0.70620) during the Last Glacial and −4.5 (0.70849) during the late Holocene reflecting changes in the origin of the sediment and current transport from a more northerly towards a more southerly source and from overall stronger to weaker upwelling. The δ30Si signature of both total biogenic opal (δ30Siopal) and of hand-picked diatoms (δ30Sidiatom) ranged from +0.3‰ (Last Glacial) to +1.4‰ (late Holocene) confirming large variations in upwelling intensity driving silicic acid utilisation by diatoms. Our combined bSiO2 MAR, δ30Siopal and detrital radiogenic isotope results demonstrate that the strongest El Niño-Southern Oscillation conditions off Peru of the past 20 ka have prevailed during the past 5 ka.

    Beschreibung: The evolution of global ocean circulation toward deep-water production in the high southern latitudes is thought to have been closely linked to the transition from extreme mid-Cretaceous warmth to the cooler Cenozoic climate. The relative influences of climate cooling and the opening and closure of oceanic gateways on the mode of deep-ocean circulation are, however, still unresolved. Here we reconstruct intermediate- to deep-water circulation for the latest Cretaceous based on new high-resolution radiogenic neodymium (Nd) isotope data from several sites and for different water depths in the South Atlantic, Southern Ocean, and proto-Indian Ocean. Our data document the presence of markedly different intermediate water Nd-isotopic compositions in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean. In particular, a water mass with a highly radiogenic Nd isotope signature most likely originating from intense hotspot-related volcanic activity bathed the crest of Walvis Ridge between 71 and 69 Ma, which formed a barrier that prevented deep-water exchange between the Southern Ocean and the North Atlantic basins. We suggest that the Cenozoic mode of global deep-ocean circulation was still suppressed by tectonic barriers in the latest Cretaceous, and that numerous, mostly regionally-formed and sourced intermediate to deep waters supplied the deep ocean prior to 68 million yr ago.

    Beschreibung: Altogether, 103 adult and 23 juvenile specimens of Campyloderes from 33 locations both in the deep sea and on the continental shelf all over the world were studied by light microscopy (97 specimens) and scanning electron microscopy (28 specimens). Especially from the Faroe Island, the Central American East Pacific Ocean and from the area east and northeast of New Zealand, enough specimens are available to study the regional variation of characters. Specimens both from these regional areas and worldwide reveal a significant morphological variation, especially in the distribution of sensory spots, gland cell outlets, and papillae, whereas characters conventionally used for species identification, such as spine pattern do not vary much. Overlapping character patterns do not allow identification of different species and to discriminate the current populations from previously described species. We conclude that the morphological variation results from ongoing species formation processes. We also report observations that two adult life history stages may exist in Campyloderes. The character set in the ground pattern of Campyloderes is presented.

    Beschreibung: Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) have proven to be highly effective in recovering well localized samples and observations from the seafloor. In the course of ROV deployments, however, huge amounts of video and photographic data are gathered which present tremendous potential for data mining. We present a new workflow based on industrial software to derive fundamental field geology information such as quantitative stratigraphy and tectonic structures from ROV-based photo and video material. We demonstrate proof of principle tests for this workflow on video data collected during dives with the ROV Kiel6000 on a new hot spot volcanic field that was recently identified southwest of the island of Santo Antão in the Cape Verdes. Our workflow allows us to derive three-dimensional models of outcrops facilitating quantitative measurements of joint orientation, bedding structure, grain size comparison and photo mosaicking within a georeferenced framework. The compiled data facilitate volcanological and tectonic interpretations from hand specimen to outcrop scales based on the quantified optical data. The demonstrated procedure is readily replicable and opens up possibilities for post-cruise “virtual fieldwork” on the seafloor.

    Beschreibung: The sea surface microlayer (SML) covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and is the boundary layer interface between the ocean and the atmosphere. This important biogeochemical and ecological system is critical to a diverse range of Earth system processes, including the synthesis, transformation and cycling of organic material, and the air–sea exchange of gases, particles and aerosols. In this review we discuss the SML paradigm, taking into account physicochemical and biological characteristics that define SML structure and function. These include enrichments in biogenic molecules such as carbohydrates, lipids and proteinaceous material that contribute to organic carbon cycling, distinct microbial assemblages that participate in air–sea gas exchange, the generation of climate-active aerosols and the accumulation of anthropogenic pollutants with potentially serious implications for the health of the ocean. Characteristically large physical, chemical and biological gradients thus separate the SML from the underlying water and the available evidence implies that the SML retains its integrity over wide ranging environmental conditions. In support of this we present previously unpublished time series data on bacterioneuston composition and SML surfactant activity immediately following physical SML disruption; these imply timescales of the order of minutes for the reestablishment of the SML following disruption. A progressive approach to understanding the SML and hence its role in global biogeochemistry can only be achieved by considering as an integrated whole, all the key components of this complex environment.     Beschreibung: SST variability within the Atlantic cold tongue (ACT) region is of climatic relevance for the surrounding continents. A multi cruise data set of microstructure observations is used to infer regional as well as seasonal variability of upper ocean mixing and diapycnal heat flux within the ACT region. The variability in mixing intensity is related to the variability in large scale background conditions, which were additionally observed during the cruises. The observations indicate fundamental differences in background conditions in terms of shear and stratification below the mixed layer (ML) for the western and eastern equatorial ACT region causing critical Froude numbers (Fr) to be more frequently observed in the western equatorial ACT. The distribution of critical Fr occurrence below the ML reflects the regional and seasonal variability of mixing intensity. Turbulent dissipation rates (ε) at the equator (2°N-2°S) are strongly increased in the upper thermocline compared to off-equatorial locations. In addition, ε is elevated in the western equatorial ACT compared to the east from May to November, whereas boreal summer appears as the season of highest mixing intensities throughout the equatorial ACT region, coinciding with ACT development. Diapycnal heat fluxes at the base of the ML in the western equatorial ACT region inferred from ε and stratification range from a maximum of 90 Wm-2 in boreal summer to 55 Wm-2 in September and 40 Wm-2 in November. In the eastern equatorial ACT region maximum values of about 25 Wm-2 were estimated during boreal summer reducing to about 5 Wm-2 towards the end of the year. Outside the equatorial region, inferred diapycnal heat fluxes are comparably low rarely exceeding 10 Wm-2. Integrating the obtained heat flux estimates in the ML heat budget at 10°W on the equator accentuates the diapycnal heat flux as the largest ML cooling term during boreal summer and early autumn. In the western equatorial ACT elevated meridional velocity shear in the upper thermocline contributes to the enhanced diapycnal heat flux within this region during boreal summer and autumn. The elevated meridional velocity shear appears to be associated with intra-seasonal wave activity.

    Beschreibung: The present study investigates the influence of environmental (temperature, salinity) and biological (growth rate, inter-generic variations) parameters on calcium isotope fractionation (δ44/40Ca) in scleractinian coral skeleton to better constrain this record. Previous studies focused on the δ44/40Ca record in different marine organisms to reconstruct seawater composition or temperature, but only few studies investigated corals. This study presents measurements performed on modern corals from natural environments (from the Maldives for modern and from Tahiti for fossil corals) as well as from laboratory cultures (Centre Scientifique de Monaco). Measurements on Porites sp., Acropora sp., Montipora verrucosa and Stylophora pistillata allow constraining inter-generic variability. Our results show that the fractionation of δ44/40Ca ranges from 0.6 to 0.1‰, independent of the genus or the environmental conditions. No significant relationship between the rate of calcification and δ44/40Ca was found. The weak temperature dependence reported in earlier studies is most probably not the only parameter that is responsible for the fractionation. Indeed, sub-seasonal temperature variations reconstructed by δ18O and Sr/Ca ratio using a multi-proxy approach, are not mirrored in the coral's δ44/40Ca variations. The intergeneric variability and intrageneric variability among the studied samples are weak except for S. pistillata, which shows calcium isotopic values increasing with salinity. The variability between samples cultured at a salinity of 40 is higher than those cultured at a salinity of 36 for this species. The present study reveals a strong biological control of the skeletal calcium isotope composition by the polyp and a weak influence of environmental factors, specifically temperature and salinity (except for S. pistillata). Vital effects have to be investigated in situ to better constrain their influence on the calcium isotopic signal. If vital effects could be extracted from the isotopic signal, the calcium isotopic composition of coral skeletons could provide reliable information on the calcium composition and budget in ocean.     Beschreibung: It is well established that Hf weathers incongruently such that the isotopic compositions in seawater are offset from those of Nd relative to the correlation defined by bulk lithologies of the continental crust. Here we study this process in detail with new records of the seasonal variability of isotope compositions and concentrations of Hf and Nd in four Swiss rivers. The water has been filtered at a pore size of 0.45 mu m and therefore represents the truly dissolved and the colloidal pool of both elements. The studied rivers drain metamorphic (gneissic) or sedimentary (mixed carbonate/siliciclastic) lithologies. The dissolved isotope data are compared to the isotope compositions and concentrations of the suspended load and different fractions of the actual source rocks in the respective catchments, as well as to concomitant changes in the aqueous chemistry of the major elements. Dissolved Nd concentrations span similar ranges for all rivers, whereas Hf concentrations are one order of magnitude lower in the rivers that drain gneissic catchments compared to those draining sedimentary rocks. This primarily results from the retention of most of the Hf in the gneissic zircons, as indicated by the Hf budget of the gneisses, whereas Hf in the sedimentary catchments is readily weathered from fine detrital silicates. Large differences are found between the dissolved Hf isotope compositions of the rivers and those of the suspended load and the source rocks, consistent with the release of Hf from a radiogenic rock fraction during weathering. In the metamorphic catchments this primarily reflects that fact that zircons are barely accessible for weathering. The zircon-free portion of the rocks appears to weather congruently as the riverine Hf isotope compositions are similar to the zircon-free portion of the gneisses, rather than being distinctly more radiogenic. Leaching experiments performed to understand the riverine Hf budget in the sedimentary catchments reveal that the carbonate fraction of the sedimentary rocks is extremely radiogenic, yielding Hf isotope compositions up to epsilon(Hf) of + 208. However, the Hf concentrations in the carbonate fractions are too low to dominate the riverine Hf budget, which is instead controlled by the weathering of detrital silicate minerals. Two of the catchments, a metamorphic and a sedimentary one, show relatively systematic changes towards more radiogenic dissolved Hf isotope compositions as discharge increases. This suggests that continental runoff conditions could be a relevant parameter for the control of the seawater Hf isotope composition, whereby more congruent weathering is achieved during low discharge when Hf is increasingly derived from weathering-resistant unradiogenic minerals

    Beschreibung: A temporary passive seismic network of 21 broad-band stations was deployed in Central Chile between 35°S to 36°S. The network recorded data prior to the magnitude Mw = 8.8 2010 Maule earthquake at a latitude of the major slip and surface deformation. The experiment was conducted to survey crustal and mantle structures and to assess the state of hydration of the mantle wedge. We present results of a teleseismic P receiver function study, supporting a continental Moho at approx. 38 km depth. Phase conversion at this boundary could be observed continuously from the intersection of the subducting slab with the continental Moho towards the Andes. The character of receiver functions indicated little evidence for infiltration of water from the subducting plate into the overlying mantle wedge, suggesting that only a small amount of water is released from the subducting plate. Aftershocks of the Maule earthquake and post-seismic slip reached depths of 50 km and hence slip spread down-dip of the continental Moho in the post-seismic phase. Co-seismic rupture, however, occurred updip of the continental Moho. Spare aftershock seismicity is observed at the intersection of the continental Moho with the subducting slab.

    Beschreibung: We integrate micropaleontological and geochemical records (benthic stable isotopes, neodymium isotopes, benthic foraminiferal abundances and XRF-scanner derived elemental data) from well-dated Pacific Ocean successions (15–12.7 Ma) to monitor circulation changes during the middle Miocene transition into a colder climate mode with permanent Antarctic ice cover. Together with previously published records, our results show improvement in deep water ventilation and strengthening of the meridional overturning circulation following major ice expansion at ∼13.9 Ma. Neodymium isotope data reveal, however, that the provenance of intermediate and deep water masses did not change markedly between 15 and 12.7 Ma. We attribute the increased δ13C gradient between Pacific deep and intermediate water masses between ∼13.6 and 12.7 Ma to more vigorous entrainment of Pacific Central Water into the wind-driven ocean circulation due to enhanced production of intermediate and deep waters in the Southern Ocean. Prominent 100 kyr ventilation cycles after 13.9 Ma reveal that the deep Pacific remained poorly ventilated during warmer intervals at high eccentricity, whereas colder periods (low eccentricity) were characterized by a more vigorous meridional overturning circulation with enhanced carbonate preservation. The long-term δ13C decline in Pacific intermediate and deep water sites between 13.5 and 12.7 Ma reflects a global trend, probably related to a re-adjustment response of the global carbon cycle following the last 400 kyr carbon maximum (CM6) of the “Monterey Excursion”.

    Beschreibung: Five strains (JA325, JA389, JA473, JA563 and JA582) of Gram stain-negative, vibrioid to spiral shaped, phototrophic purple bacteria were isolated from solar salterns of India. All strains contained bacteriochlorophyll-a and carotenoids of the spirilloxanthin series as photosynthetic pigments. C18:1ω7c, C18:1ω7c 11-methyl and C16:0 were the major fatty acids of all strains. Diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), ornithine lipid (OL), an unidentified phospholipid (PL), and an unidentified aminolipid (AL) were the major polar lipids of all the strains. According to 16S rRNA gene sequences, all strains clustered phylogenetically with the only species of the genus Rhodothalassium (99.8–99.3% sequence similarity) but only strains JA325 and JA563 were distinctly related (60 + 1.5% DNA–DNA hybridization [DDH]) to the type strain Rhodothalassium salexigens DSM 2132T. However, the genotypic data of strains JA325 and JA563 was not supported because of a large number of phenotypic differences compared to the type strain, therefore, it is proposed that all five newly isolated strains were R. salexigens-like strains. In addition, phylogenetically, the Rhodothalassium clade represented a distinct lineage and formed a deep branch with less than 90% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to other orders of the Alphaproteobacteria, and characteristic phenotypic properties also distinguished these bacteria from other purple non-sulfur bacteria. Therefore, the novel family Rhodothalassiaceae fam. nov. and the novel order Rhodothalassiales ord. nov. are proposed for the distinct phyletic line represented by the genus Rhodothalassium.

    Beschreibung: It is unclear whether habitat degradation correlates with tolerance of marine invertebrates to abiotic stress. We therefore tested whether resistance to climate change-related stressors differs between populations of the green mussel Perna viridis from a heavily impacted and a mostly pristine site in West Java, Indonesia. In laboratory experiments, we compared their oxygen consumption and mortality under lowered salinity (-13 and -18 units, both responses), hypoxia (0.5 mg/l, mortality only) and thermal stress (+7 degrees C, mortality only). Mussels from the eutrophied and polluted Jakarta Bay showed a significantly smaller deviation from their normal oxygen consumption and higher survival rates when stressed than their conspecifics from the unaffected Lada Bay. This shows that human induced habitat degradation correlates with mussel tolerance to environmental stress. We discuss possible mechanisms - e.g. the selection of tolerant genotypes or habitat-specific differences in the nutritional status of the mussels - that could explain our observation.

    Beschreibung: This study investigates the oceanic behavior of the lithogenic trace elements Al and Ti in the upper 200 m of the Atlantic Ocean. The distribution of both metals in the dissolved and particulate phases was assessed along an E-W transect in the eastern tropical North Atlantic (December 2009) and along a meridional Atlantic transect (April-May 2010). The surface water concentrations of particulate and dissolved Al and Ti reflected the previously observed pattern of atmospheric inputs into the Atlantic Ocean. Subsurface minima at stations with pronounced fluorescence maxima were observed, suggesting a link between biological productivity and the removal of both dissolved and particulate Al and Ti. This may include uptake mechanisms, adsorption and aggregation processes on biogenic particle surfaces and the formation of large, fast sinking biogenic particles, e.g., fecal pellets. Residence times in the upper water column (100 m) of the tropical and subtropical North Atlantic were estimated to range in the order of days to weeks in the particulate phases (Al: 3-22 days, Ti: 4-37 days) and were 0.9-3.8 years for Al and 10-31 years for Ti in the dissolved phases. Longer residence times in both phases in the South Atlantic are consistent with lower biological productivity and decreased removal rates. In the upper water column, Al was predominantly present in the dissolved form, whereas Ti mostly occurred in the particulate form. Largest deviations in the partition coefficients between the particulate and dissolved phases were found in the surface waters, together with excess dissolved Al over Ti compared to the crustal source. This likely reflects elevated dissolution of Al compared to Ti from atmospheric mineral particles

    Beschreibung: This contribution is a response to the rebuttal of Agnew et al. (2012) to Froese and Proelss (2012) “Evaluation and legal assessment of certified seafood”. It corrects some factually wrong statements in the rebuttal, revisits the definitions of ‘depleted’ and ‘overfished’, and notes that the rebuttal agrees with the international definition of ‘overfishing’ (F〉FMSY) that was used by Froese and Proelss (2012). The rebuttal presents an analysis of 45 MSC-certified stocks. Of these, 27% are ‘depleted’ (according to the definition used by MSC) or ‘overfished’ (according to the definition used by Froese and Proelss 2012) and 16% are subject to ‘overfishing’, basically confirming the critique of Froese and Proelss (2012). This response concludes that MSC has to change its rules for certification such that (1) overfishing is not allowed and (2) ‘depleted’ stocks are marked as such. ⺠This paper confirms previous definitions of ‘overfishing’ and ‘overfished’. ⺠It notes that MSC-certified fisheries may engage in overfishing. ⺠It notes that MSC acknowledges ongoing overfishing in 16% of certified stocks. ⺠It notes that MSC acknowledges that 27% of certified stocks are depleted.

    Beschreibung: Seasonal variability in fecundity has been observed in a number of marine fishes and is important towards understanding the reproductive potential of a fish stock. However, the seasonal dynamics of egg production of Baltic sprat (Sprattus sprattus balticus S) have not been well described to date. We present data on the timing of spawning, and the seasonal variability in batch fecundity, number of developing oocytes, oocyte dry weight, spawning fraction, fish condition and atresia for this species in the Bornholm Basin, Baltic Sea. Histological techniques in combination with image analysis were applied to investigate those variables based upon material sampled in 2005 and 2008. Sprat were reported to be in spawning condition from January to June in each year plus in 2008 signs of ovarian maturation were also observed in November. Relative batch fecundity was found to vary two-fold with 85 eggs g−1 ovary free body weight observed early in the spawning season (January 2005) and 165 eggs g−1 ovary free body weight late in the spawning season (June 2008). Variability in batch fecundity during peak spawning was rather low. A seasonal decrease in oocyte dry weight was related to an increase in batch fecundity. Spawning fraction varied over the course of the spawning period with values ranging from 0.29 in March to 0.18 in June. Stereometric analyses confirmed the indeterminate fecundity of Baltic sprat. Prevalence of atresia was low during peak spawning in April to June (1.0–4.0%) but considerably higher during the early spawning period in March (16.4%) and highest in November (38.5%). Female sprat condition was low during the spawning period and increased sharply after spawning ceased. Our study provides a better understanding of fecundity and spawning dynamics of Baltic sprat which will aid to improve the assessment of reproductive potential of this ecologically and economically important fish species.

    Beschreibung: Regional extension which initiates and promotes the rise of salt diapirs can also make diapirs fall once the supply of salt from its source is restricted. New observations on the 3D seismic data from a salt diapir in the Sørvestsnaget Basin suggest that salt moves until the end of the Eocene and is subtle to minor readjustments afterwards, revealing a more complex kinematics that previously described. Observations such as salt horns and sags and an antithetic fault linked to the western flank of the diapir suggest that salt syn-kinematics during Middle-Late Eocene included passive rising of the salt, followed by a fall. The salt horns are remnants of a taller salt diapir that, together with the indentation of the Middle-Late Eocene syn-kinematic sediment overburden above the salt, indicate diapiric fall due to restriction of salt supply by extension. Post-kinematic readjustments did not include diapiric reactivation by tectonic compression as previously thought, but minor salt rise by shortening due to gravity gliding after the tilting of the margin during Plio-Pleistocene glacial sediment loading and differential compaction of surrounding sediments. The salt diapir appears to be presently inactive and salt supply may have been restricted from its source already since Late Eocene.

    Beschreibung: During the current (1995–present) eruptive phase of the Soufrière Hills volcano on Montserrat, voluminous pyroclastic flows entered the sea off the eastern flank of the island, resulting in the deposition of well-defined submarine pyroclastic lobes. Previously reported bathymetric surveys documented the sequential construction of these deposits, but could not image their internal structure, the morphology or extent of their base, or interaction with the underlying sediments. We show, by combining these bathymetric data with new high-resolution three dimensional (3D) seismic data, that the sequence of previously detected pyroclastic deposits from different phases of the ongoing eruptive activity is still well preserved. A detailed interpretation of the 3D seismic data reveals the absence of significant (〉3 m) basal erosion in the distal extent of submarine pyroclastic deposits. We also identify a previously unrecognized seismic unit directly beneath the stack of recent lobes. We propose three hypotheses for the origin of this seismic unit, but prefer an interpretation that the deposit is the result of the subaerial flank collapse that formed the English's Crater scarp on the Soufrière Hills volcano. The 1995–recent volcanic activity on Montserrat accounts for a significant portion of the sediments on the southeast slope of Montserrat, in places forming deposits that are more than 60 m thick, which implies that the potential for pyroclastic flows to build volcanic island edifices is significant.

    Beschreibung: A small-scale oceanic eddy, which was generated in autumn 2011 at the headland of Cap-Vert off the coast of Senegal, West Africa, and then propagated westward into the open North Atlantic Ocean, is studied by multi-sensor satellite and surface drifter data. The eddy was generated after a sudden increase of the trade winds causing an enhanced southward flow and upwelling at the coast of Senegal. After this wind burst event, an extremely nonlinear cyclonic eddy with a radius of about 10 to 20 km evolved downstream of Cap-Vert with Rossby number larger than one. Our analysis suggests that the eddy was generated by flow separation at the headland of Cap-Vert. The eddy was tracked on its way into the open North Atlantic Ocean from satellites over 31 days via its sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a (CHL) signature and by a satellite-tracked surface drifter. The satellite images show that this small-scale eddy transported nutrients from the upwelling region westward into the oligotrophic North Atlantic thus giving rise to enhanced CHL concentration there. Maximum CHL concentration was encountered few days after vortex generation, which is consistent with a delayed plankton growth following nutrient supply into the euphotic zone within the eddy. Furthermore, the eddy was imaged by the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) onboard the Envisat satellite. It is shown that the radar signatures of cold eddies result from damping of short surface waves by biogenic surface films which arise from surface-active material secreted by the biota in the cold eddy as well as by the change of the stability of the air–sea interface.     Beschreibung: Age progressive hotspot chains are commonly believed to form by decompression melting as the lithosphere moves over a mantle plume. The Tristan-Gough volcanic track in the South Atlantic, composed of the Walvis aseismic ridge and the associated Guyot Province, extends from the Etendeka continental flood basalts (CFBs) in Namibia to the volcanically active islands of Tristan da Cunha and Gough. Here we present new laser step-heating 40Ar/39Ar ages of mineral separates from samples from the Tristan-Gough volcanic track and the Rio Grande Rise. The 40Ar/39Ar ages have primarily been determined on feldspar crystals, but also on biotite crystals (one sample) and whole rock chips (one sample). Our data indicate a younging age progression from the Etendeka CFBs to Tristan da Cunha and Gough. The ages range from 114 Ma at the northeastern end to 58–72 Ma for DSDP Sites 525A and 528 at the southwestern end of the Walvis Ridge, to 27–49 Ma for the Guyot Province and to 80–87 Ma for the Rio Grande Rise, which is believed to represent the counterpart of the Walvis Ridge on the South American Plate. We also found anomalously young (late-stage) volcanism on the Walvis Ridge (~ 55 Ma) and the Rio Grande Rise (~ 46 Ma), which, like late-stage volcanism on other hotspot tracks, represents more silica-undersaturated compositions than the main “shield stage” tholeiitic volcanism. Combining our new ages with published ages for the Etendeka CFBs yields a general volcanic migration rate of ~ 30 mm/a for the Tristan-Gough track assuming a constant velocity of the African Plate. Our new geochronological constraints for an age progression provide further support for a mantle plume origin of the Tristan-Gough track. Finally our new age data imply a faster volcanic migration rate for this hotspot track than previously published rates, which needs to be factored into plate tectonic reconstruction models.

    Beschreibung: We have already shown in a previous methodological work that the surrogate-based optimization (SBO) approach can be successful and computationally very efficient when reconstructing parameters in a typical nonlinear, time-dependent marine ecosystem model, where a one-dimensional application has been considered to test the method's functionality in a first step. The application on real (measurement) data is covered in this paper. Essential here are a special model data treatment and further methodological enhancements which allow us to improve the robustness of the algorithm and the accuracy of the solution. By numerical experiments, we demonstrate that SBO is able to yield a solution close to the original model's optimum while time savings are again up to 85% when compared to a conventional direct optimization of the original model.

    Beschreibung: We present the application of the Surrogate-based Optimization (SBO) method on a parameter identification problem for a 3-D biogeochemical model. SBO is a method for acceleration of optimization processes when the underlying model itself is of very high computational complexity. In these cases, coupled simulation runs require large amounts of computer time, where optimization runs may become unfeasible even with high-performance hardware. As a consequence, the key idea of SBO is to replace the original and computationally expensive (high-fidelity) model by a so-called surrogate, which is created from a less accurate but computationally cheaper (low-fidelity) model and a suitable correction approach to increase its accuracy. To date, the SBO approach has been widely and successfully used in engineering applications and also for parameter identification in a 1-D marine ecosystem model of NPZD type. In this paper, we apply the approach onto a two-component biogeochemical model. The model is spun-up into a steady seasonal cycle via the Transport Matrix Approach. The low-fidelity model we use consists of a reduced number of spin-up iterations (several decades instead of millennia used for the original model). A multiplicative correction operator is further exploited to extrapolate the rather inaccurate low-fidelity model onto the original one. This corrected model builds our surrogate. We validate this SBO method by twin-experiments that use synthetic observations generated by the original model. We motivate our choice of the low-fidelity model and the multiplicative correction and discuss the computational advantage of SBO in comparison to an expensive parameter optimization in the context of the high-fidelity model. The proposed SBO technique is shown to yield a solution close to the target at a significant gain of computational efficiency. Without further regularization techniques, the method is able to identify most model parameters. The method is simple to implement and presents a promising and pragmatic tool to calibrate biogeochemical models in a global three-dimensional setting

    Beschreibung: Dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst), coccolith and planktic foraminiferal assemblages from a core in the western Iceland Sea were used to reconstruct and compare the surface ocean developments of the Holocene and the Last Interglacial (Marine Isotopic Stage or MIS 5e). While increasing subpolar planktic foraminifers from ~ 10 ka indicate subsurface warming peaking around 7.5 ka, the dinocyst data suggest that the uppermost ocean remained dominated by cold waters until ~ 6.5 ka. A reduced advection of cold polar waters through the East Greenland/East Icelandic Current thereafter entailed warmest and most saline Holocene conditions between 6.5 and 5 ka, in turn followed by a general cooling trend. By contrast, both planktic foraminifers and dinocysts show an increased presence of Atlantic (-type) waters from ~ 122 ka onward resulting in a MIS 5e thermal optimum around 120.5 ka. Nonetheless, occasional freshwater input from melting drift ice created stratified but also seasonally variable conditions during this first half of MIS 5e. This stratification signature disappeared at ~ 120 ka when a marked repositioning of the oceanographic fronts occurred. Slightly colder conditions are indicated by both phyto- and zooplankton from there on until the end of MIS 5e around ~ 117 ka. A late MIS 5e cooling at the Iceland Plateau is opposite to a late MIS 5e optimum observed in the eastern Nordic seas. This regional difference is likely explained by various feedback mechanisms following the major reorganisation of the oceanic fronts at ~ 120 ka. The Holocene and MIS 5e interglacial variability is not reflected in the (quasi-monospecific) coccolith assemblages and illustrates the low sensitivity of living coccolithophore communities to subtle temperature changes in the low-temperature regions of the Nordic seas. Overall, quite different surface water properties appear to have characterised both interglacial intervals, with a higher share of warm, Atlantic elements in the planktic communities during MIS 5e. This suggests a higher contribution of Atlantic waters in the southwestern Nordic seas probably due to a more northward expansion of the Irminger Current under weakened polar East Greenland/East Icelandic currents. Such a reduced influence of polar waters in the southwestern Nordic seas may thus explain other evidence for relatively warm conditions in MIS 5e all around southern Greenland.

    Beschreibung: Convergent plate boundaries around the globe show a high degree of structural complexity and variability in site-specific geometry and mass flux. The heterogeneity in the structural evolution, the interior regime as well as external architecture of individual margins is reflected in their seismic character, resulting in a segmentation along-strike as well as along-dip. Subduction zones generate more than 80 percent of global earthquakes above magnitude 8.0, but rupture characteristics are highly individual and linked to margin specific geometrical conditions. Major segments of subduction zones are commonly submerged in deep water and difficult to access at the majority of margins. Marine geophysical techniques, which are able to image the complex structures in these settings with sufficient coherency and depth penetration, have proven crucial to improve our knowledge on the geological framework of the different types of subduction zones. The aim of this review paper is to unravel the structural diversity of convergent margins and between individual subduction zone segments. Field data from different margins around the globe deliver images of the seafloor and subsurface in unprecedented resolution, which show segmentation to be far more complex than previously inferred. Along-strike segmentation results in accretionary segments contiguous to erosive segments along a single margin. Modes of mass transfer must hence be viewed as transient processes dependent on sediment supply and lower plate structure. Along-strike segment boundaries commonly correlate with underthrusting lower plate relief that controls the deep deformation of a subduction zone and the spatial and temporal variation in slip behavior. Examples of underthrusting oceanic basement relief at different stages of subduction elucidate their impact on the inner geometry of the margin. Lower plate heterogeneities occur at subduction zones worldwide and thus pose a common phenomenon, whose role as barriers to seismic rupture constitute a central control on subduction zone seismicity and segmentation.

CCK is known to play a major role in the endocrine control of digestive processes in mammals and adult fish, but its regulatory role in the larval stages of marine fish is largely unknown. Only small amounts of CCK were found in the body (excluding head) in cod larvae at first-feeding, but CCK levels increased exponentially with development, suggesting a more pronounced role of CCK during ontogeny. Tryptic enzyme activity increased slightly until a standard length of ca. 8 mm (approx. 33 days dpff) with a significant increase in larvae larger than 8 mm standard length, indicating limited digestive capacity in the early stages. To entangle the short-term feedback mechanism between CCK and tryptic enzyme activity, we conducted a 12 hour feeding experiment at 21 dpff. Cod larvae receiving only algae revealed a noticeable response in tryptic enzyme activity within two hours in the morning, whereas larvae fed algae and rotifers at the same time showed a slightly delayed response up to four hours. Tryptic enzyme activity remained low in the group receiving only algae as well as the two fed groups in the afternoon. No reaction in tryptic enzyme activity was observed in larvae that received a second meal of rotifers in the afternoon, indicating limited regulatory and digestive capacity to handle several meals in a short period. CCK levels remained relatively constant throughout the day but increased in the afternoon in all three groups when tryptic enzyme activity was low, suggesting that a negative feedback mechanism between CCK and tryptic enzyme activity is present in larval cod at least from 21 dpff.

Eutrophication is a global environmental problem. Better management of this threat requires more accurate assessments of anthropogenic nitrogen (N) inputs to coastal systems than can be obtained with traditional measures. Recently, primary producer N isotopic signatures have emerged as useful proxy of such inputs. Here, we demonstrated for the first time the applicability of this method using the widespread eelgrass (Zostera marina) in the highly eutrophic Baltic Sea. Spatial availability of sewage N across a bay with one major sewage outflow predicted by eelgrass δ15N was high near and downstream of the outflow compared to upstream, but returned to upstream levels within 4 km downstream from the outfall. General conclusions were corroborated by traditional eutrophication measures, but in contrast to these measures were fully quantitative. Eelgrass N isotope ratios therefore show high potential for coastal screens of eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, and in other areas with eelgrass meadows

    Beschreibung: Fish early life stages have been shown to react sensitive to simulated ocean acidification. In particular, acid–base disturbances elicited by altered seawater carbonate chemistry have been shown to induce pathologies in larval fish. However, the mechanisms underlying these disturbances are largely unknown. We used gene expression profiling of genes involved in acid–base regulation and metabolism to investigate the effects of seawater hypercapnia on developing Japanese ricefish (medaka; Oryzias latipes). Our results demonstrate that embryos respond with delayed development during the time window of 2–5 dpf when exposed to a seawater pCO2 of 0.12 and 0.42 kPa. This developmental delay is associated with strong down-regulation of genes from major metabolic pathways including glycolysis (G6PDH), Krebs cycle (CS) and the electron transport chain (CytC). In a second step we identified acid–base relevant genes in different ontogenetic stages (embryos, hatchlings and adults) and tissues (gill and intestine) that are up regulated in response to hypercapnia, including NHE3, NBCa, NBCb, AE1a, AE1b, ATP1a1a.1, ATP1a1b, ATP1b1a, Rhag, Rhbg and Rhcg. Interestingly, NHE3 and Rhcg expressions were increased in response to environmental hypercapnia in all ontogenetic stages and tissues tested, indicating the central role of these proteins in acid–base regulation. Furthermore, the increased expression of genes from amino acid metabolism pathways (ALT1, ALT2, AST1a, AST1b, AST2 and GLUD) suggests that energetic demands of hatchlings are fueled by the breakdown of amino acids. The present study provides a first detailed gene expression analysis throughout the ontogeny of a euryhaline teleost in response to seawater hypercapnia, indicating highest sensitivity in early embryonic stages, when functional ion regulatory epithelia are not yet developed.

    Beschreibung: Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) now form an important part of marine conservation and fisheries management; hence, there is broad interest in developing procedures that optimize their design. We used data collected over a 10-year period (2003–2012) from direct surveys and 〉100 adult male and female loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta ) tracked with devices, includ ing GPS loggers and Fastloc GPSArgos, to consider the optimum design for a MPA at a globally important breeding area, where there is already an existing national marine park aiming to protect the population (Zakynthos, Greece). Turtles primarily used areas very close to shore (approx. 7 km in length by 1 km in width, within the 〈10 m isobath) for breeding and foraging activity at different times of the year. We calculated that this small nearshore coastal zone encompassed 72% of all turtle GPS locations recorded in the MPA, and is therefore important for conservation management. We developed an index to evaluate the suitabili ty of the existing and proposed conserv ation zones based on (1) home range area use by turtles in these zones versus (2) zone size, so that the benefit to turtles could be maximized while minimizing the negative impacts to other stakeholders (e.g., boat operators). With this evidence-based approach, we propose a modification to the existing MPA that might both enhance local economic tourism activities and better safeguard this key sea turtle breeding population. The approaches used here will have general application for the design of MPAs used by mobile species that can be tracked.

    Beschreibung: This study highlights the potential of using a low frequency multibeam echosounder for detection and visualization of shallow gas occurring several meters beneath the seafloor. The presence of shallow gas was verified in the Bornholm Basin, Baltic Sea, at 80 m water depth with standard geochemical core analysis and hydroacoustic subbottom profiling. Successively, this area was surveyed with a 95 kHz and a 12 kHz multibeam echosounder (MBES). The bathymetric measurements with 12 kHz provided depth values systematically deeper by several meters compared to 95 kHz data. This observation was attributed to enhanced penetration of the low frequency signal energy into soft sediments. Consequently, the subbottom geoacoustic properties contributed highly to the measured backscattered signals. Those appeared up to 17 dB higher inside the shallow gas area compared to reference measurements outside and could be clearly linked to the shallow gas front depth down to 5 meter below seafloor. No elevated backscatter was visible in 95 kHz MBES data, which in turn highlights the superior potential of low frequency MBES to image shallow sub-seafloor features. Small gas pockets could be resolved even on the outer swath (up to 65°). Strongly elevated backscattering from gassy areas occurred at large incidence angles and a high gas sensitivity of the MBES is further supported by an angular response analysis presented in this study. We conclude that the MBES together with subbottom profiling can be used as an efficient tool for spatial subbottom mapping in soft sediment environments.

    Beschreibung: Based on multichannel seismic, geoacoustic, and methane sensor data, four different areas along the Hikurangi Margin show multiple indications for seep activity including bright spots, transparent zones, vertical chimneys, and the occurrence and distribution of bottom simulating reflectors. Locations where these features reach the seafloor are characterised by high backscatter intensity on sidescan sonar images and transparent zones in sediment echosounder profiles, while methane sensors show episodic, elevated methane concentrations near the seep sites. Methane discharge is facilitated by reduced hydrostatic pressure during low tides. The greatest number of seeps at Opouawe Bank correlates with the highest methane activity along the Hikurangi Margin. High heat flow values on flanks of ridges and low heat flow values on anticlines reflect a topographic effect on subsurface temperatures. Elevated heat flow occurs in the vicinity of seeps on Opouawe Bank. We propose that there are two drivers behind methane seepage with respect to the migration pathways of methane through the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) to the seafloor: (1) structurally controlled and (2) stratigraphically controlled. In the structural model, vertical chimneys are the major pathways for methane through the GHSZ. Part of the upwardly migrating methane forms gas hydrate within the chimney. In the stratigraphic model, methane migration is stratigraphically controlled beneath seeps that are located on bathymetric highs and/or where subsurface anticlines occur beneath seeps. The structurally controlled seeps produce higher methane escape at the seafloor than those that are stratigraphically controlled. A combination of both driving mechanisms results in the highest methane seepage rates at the Tui Seep on Opouawe Bank.

    Beschreibung: Chemical (Sr, Mg) and isotopic (δ18O, 87Sr/86Sr) compositions of calcium carbonate veins (CCV) in the oceanic basement were determined to reconstruct changes in Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca of seawater in the Cenozoic. We examined CCV from 10 basement drill sites in the Atlantic and Pacific, ranging in age between 165 and 2.3 Ma. Six of these sites are from cold ridge flanks in basement 〈46 Ma, which provide direct information about seawater composition. CCV of these young sites were dated, using the Sr isotopic evolution of seawater. For the other sites, temperature-corrections were applied to correct for seawater–basement exchange processes. The combined data show that a period of constant/low Sr/Ca (4.46–6.22 mmol/mol) and Mg/Ca (1.12–2.03 mol/mol) between 165 and 30 Ma was followed by a steady increase in Mg/Ca ratios by a factor of three to modern ocean composition. Mg/Ca–Sr/Ca relations suggest that variations in hydrothermal fluxes and riverine input are likely causes driving the seawater compositional changes. However, additional forcing may be involved in explaining the timing and magnitude of changes. A plausible scenario is intensified carbonate production due to increased alkalinity input to the oceans from silicate weathering, which in turn is a result of subduction-zone recycling of CO2 from pelagic carbonate formed after the Cretaceous slow-down in ocean crust production rate.

    Beschreibung: The Plio–Pleistocene warm-temperate carbonate deposits along the SE coast of Rhodes (Greece) formed on a highly structured island ‘shelf’ during a major transgression-regression cycle, which reached bathyal depth during maximal transgression. The complex palaeobathymetry exhibits many characteristics of submarine canyons, especially of so-called ‘blind’ or ‘headless’ canyons — a canyon type, which is especially common in the modern Mediterranean. This study presents the palaeoenvironmental evolution of one of these canyons, which is today represented by the Lardos valley, eastern central Rhodes. The studied section comprises the middle Pleistocene (900–300 ka) and describes a shallowing-upward trend from bathyal to circalitoral depth. Thin fossiliferous debris flow layers document turnovers and abundance changes in fauna and floral of hard-bottom communities, which developed on the adjacent basement slopes and highs. The comparison of the obtained results with other studies from the southeastern coast of Rhodes suggests a high degree of diachroneity of lithological boundaries of these Plio–Pleistocene deposits, which can be best explained by progressive infill of small depocentres located at different altitude levels. Hence, lithological changes are interpreted to be time-transgressive from distal (low altitude) to proximal (high altitude) during transgression while time-transgressive from proximal to distal during regression. Consequently, the best chronostratigraphic correlation horizon is the surface of maximal transgression. The most probable age for this surface could be estimated at 1.1 to 0.8 Ma, 0.2–0.5 Ma younger than previous estimates. Furthermore, the current lithostratigraphic schemes for the Plio–Pleistocene deposits of southeastern Rhodes are reviewed and revised. Highlights ► The studied outcrop documents the uplift of Rhodes during the middle Pleistocene. ► The Plio–Pleistocene stratigraphy of Rhodes is reviewed and revised. ► The studied sedimentary unit is interpreted as submarine canyon deposit. ► Diachroneity of canyon deposits is most likely due to different altitudes of small depocentres.

    Beschreibung: This paper reports results of a new comprehensive geological mapping of the Late Pleistocene Old Shiveluch volcano. The mapping results and geochemical data on major and trace element composition of the volcanic rocks are used to characterize spatial distribution, eruptive sequence and volumetric relationships between different rock types of the volcano. Old Shiveluch volcano had been constructed during two main stages: initial explosive and subsequent effusive ones. Pyroclastic deposits of the initial stage are represented by agglomerate and psephytic tuffs with very few lava flows and form at least 60% of volume of the Old Shiveluch edifice. The deposits of the second stage are dominantly lava flows erupted from four vents: Central, Western, Baidarny and Southern, reconstructed from the field relationships of their lava flows. About 75% of the Old Shiveluch edifice, both pyroclastic deposits and lava, are composed of magnesian andesites (SiO2 = 57.3–63.8 wt.%, Mg# = 0.53–0.57). The most abundant andesitic lavas were coevally erupted from the Central and Western vents in the central part of the edifice. Less voluminous high-Al basaltic andesites (SiO2 = 53.5–55.7 wt.%, Mg# = 0.52–0.56) were produced by the Western, Baidarny and Southern vents situated in the south-western sector. Small volume high-Mg basaltic andesites (SiO2 = 53.9–55.0 wt.%, Mg# = 0.59–0.64) occur in the upper part of the pyroclastic deposits. Andesites of Old and Young Shiveluch Volcanoes have similar compositions, whereas Old Shiveluch basaltic andesites are compositionally distinctive from those of the Young Shiveluch by having lower Mg#, SiO2, Cr and Ni, and higher Al2O3, FeOT, CaO, TiO2, and V contents at given MgO. Geochemical modeling suggests that the compositions of the intermediate Old Shiveluch magmas can be reasonably explained by simple fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase and magnetite (± hornblende) from water-bearing (~ 3 wt.% H2O) high-Mg# basaltic parental magma at intermediate to shallow crustal depths (〈 15 km). Mixing of evolved (SiO2 〉 60 wt.%, Mg# 〈 0.55) and primitive magmas (SiO2 〈 54 wt.%, Mg# 〉 0.65) played a relatively minor role in creating the compositional diversity of the Old Shiveluch magmas compared to the Young Shiveluch ones. The pronounced change in the Shiveluch magma compositions could have been related to adjustments of the magma plumbing system beneath Old Shiveluch following the large scale sector collapse in the Late Pleistocene that enabled a common mixing of evolved and primitive magmas on the later, Holocene stage of the volcano evolution.

    Beschreibung: Subduction zone earthquakes are known to create segmented patches of co-seismic rupture along-strike of a margin. Offshore Sumatra, repeated rupture occurred within segments bounded by permanent barriers, whose origin however is still not fully understood. In this study we image the structural variations across the rupture segment boundary between the Mw 9.1 December 26, 2004 and the Mw 8.6 March 28, 2005 Sumatra earthquakes. A set of collocated reflection and wide-angle seismic profiles are available on both sides of the segment boundary, located offshore Simeulue Island. We present the results of the seismic tomography modeling of wide-angle ocean bottom data, enhanced with MCS data and gravity modeling for the southern 2005 segment of the margin and compare it to the published model for the 2004 northern segment. Our study reveals principal differences in the structure of the subduction system north and south of the segment boundary, attributed to the subduction of 96°E fracture zone. The key differences include a change in the crustal thickness of the oceanic plate, a decrease in the amount of sediment in the trench as well as variations in the morphology and volume of the accretionary prism. These differences suggest that the 96°E fracture zone acts as an efficient barrier in the trench parallel sediment transport, as well as a divider between oceanic crustal blocks of different structure. The variability of seismic behavior is caused by the distinct changes in the morphology of the subduction complex across the boundary related to the difference in the sediment supply.

    Beschreibung: The Eastern Tropical North Atlantic (ETNA) is characterised by a strong east to west gradient in the vertical upward flux of dissolved inorganic nitrogen to the photic zone. We measured the stable nitrogen isotope (δ15N) signatures of various zooplankton taxa covering twelve stations in the ETNA (04°–14°N, 016–030°W) in fall 2009, and observed significant differences in δ15N values among stations. These spatial differences in δ15N within zooplankton taxa exceeded those between trophic levels and revealed an increasing atmospheric input of nitrogen by N2 fixation and Aeolian dust in the open ocean as opposed to remineralised NO3− close to the NW African upwelling. In order to investigate the spatial distribution of upwelling-fuelled versus atmospheric-derived nitrogen more closely, we examined the δ15N signatures in size-fractionated zooplankton as well as in three widely distributed epipelagic copepod species on a second cruise in fall 2010 in the ETNA (02-17°35′N, 015–028°W). Copepods were sampled for δ15N and RNA/DNA as a proxy for nutritional condition on 25 stations. At the same stations, vertical profiles of chlorophyll-a and dissolved nutrients were obtained. High standing stocks of chl-a were associated with shallow mixed layer depth and thickening of the nutricline. As the nitracline was generally deeper and less thick than the phosphacline, it appears that non-diazotroph primary production was limited by N rather than P throughout the study area, which is in line with enrichment experiments during these cruises. Estimated by the δ15N in zooplankton, atmospheric sources of new N contributed less than 20% close to the African coast and in the Guinea Dome area and up to 60% at the offshore stations, depending on the depth of the nitracline. δ15N of the three different copepod species investigated strongly correlated with each other, in spite of their distinct feeding ecology, which resulted in different spatial patterns of nutritional condition as indicated by RNA/DNA. Highlights: ► We studied δ15N and RNA/DNA of eastern tropical Atlantic zooplankton along with nutrients and Chl-α. ► Zooplankton −δ15N was decreasing from east (West African Shelf) to west (oligotrophic open ocean). ► Total integrated Chl-a depended mainly on nutricline depth and was N-limited throughout the area. ► Zooplankton δ15N and nutricline depth were used to estimate atmospheric N sources to the food web. ► Estimated atmospheric nitrogen sources were less than 20% at the shelf slope and up to 60% offshore.

    Beschreibung: Sediments deposited on deep-sea fans are an excellent geological archive to reconstruct past changes in fluvial discharge. Here we present a reconstruction of changes in the regime of the Nile River during the Holocene obtained using bulk elemental composition, grain-size analyses and radiogenic strontium (Sr) and neodymium (Nd) isotopes from a sediment core collected on the Nile deep-sea fan. This 6-m long core was retrieved at View the MathML source water-depth and is characterized by the presence of a 5-m thick section of finely laminated sediments, which were deposited between 9.5 and 7.3 ka BP and correspond to the African Humid Period (AHP). The data show distinct changes in eolian dust inputs as well as variations in discharge of the Blue Nile and White Nile. Sedimentation was mainly controlled by changes in fluvial discharge during the Holocene, which was predominantly forced by low-latitude summer insolation and by the location of the eastern African Rain Belt. The changes in relative contribution from the Blue Nile and White Nile followed changes in low-latitude spring/autumn insolation, which highlights the role of changes in seasonality of the precipitation on the Nile River regime. The relative intensity of the Blue Nile discharge was enhanced during the early and late Holocene at times of higher spring insolation (with massive erosion and runoff during the AHP at times of high summer insolation), while it was reduced between 8 and 4 ka at times of high autumn insolation. The gradual insolation-paced changes in fluvial regime were interrupted by a short-term arid event at 8.5–7.3 ka BP (also associated with rejuvenation of bottom-water ventilation above the Nile fan), which was likely related to northern hemisphere cooling events. Another arid event at 4.5–3.7 ka BP occurred as the apex of a gradually drier phase in NE Africa and marks the end of the AHP.

    Beschreibung: The formation of mud volcanoes in the Gulf of Cadiz is closely linked to diapirism in the deep subsurface. The Mercator mud volcano (MMV) is a rare example where diapiric emplacement, in addition to being key for upward fluid migration, is also an important zone for fluid and mineral diagenesis. The most intriguing findings in the near-surface muds of the MMV are extremely high salinities of up to 5.2 M of NaCl from diapiric and evaporitic halite dissolution and the occurrence of authigenic gypsum and anhydrite crystals, both of which have not been observed to date in the Gulf of Cadiz. Employing a thermodynamic model we elucidate how the interplay of temperature pulses, strong salinity gradients, and fluid flow dynamically drive mineral dissolution and re-formation. The strong increase in salinity in the pore fluids has important implications for thermodynamic equilibria by significantly lowering the activity of water, thereby raising the gypsum–anhydrite transition zone from 〉1 km to about 400 m sediment depth at the MMV. This transition is further shifted to immediately below the seafloor during intervals of active mud and fluid expulsion when the MV surface temperature is heated up to at least 30 °C. As a consequence, precipitation of authigenic gypsum near the sediment surface (1–2 mbsf) has been linked to the dissolution of evaporites below the MMV. More precisely, the mechanisms generating supersaturation in the ascending gypsum-saturated MMV fluids are (1) the slow and constant cooling of these fluids along the geothermal gradient during their ascent leading to formation of ubiquitous micro-crystals and (2) the more rapid cooling after a heat pulse or transport from greater and warmer depth during an active mud volcano phase leading to the precipitation of cm-scale gypsum crystals or even fist-size concretions. The MMV fluids approaching the salt diapir from farther below have experienced a genesis similar to those of other mud volcanoes in the Gulf of Cadiz located above deep-rooted faults. These processes include clay mineral dewatering, thermogenic degradation of organic matter and deep high-temperature leaching of terrigenous sediments or continental crust.

    Beschreibung: In order to investigate how submarine weathering processes may affect the water balance of sediments at convergent plate margins, six sediment cores were retrieved off Central Chile at water depth between ∼800 and 4000 m. The sediment solid phase was analyzed for its major element composition and the pore fluids were analyzed for dissolved sulfate, sulfide, total alkalinity, major cations, chloride, bromide, iodide, hydrocarbons as well as the carbon isotopic composition of methane. Because of negligible weathering on land, surface sediments off Central Chile are rich in reactive silicate minerals and have a bulk composition similar to volcanic rocks in the adjacent Andes. Deep-sourced fluxes of alkalinity, cations and chloride indicate that silicate minerals are subject to weathering in the forearc during burial. Comparison of deep-sourced signals with data from nearby Ocean Drilling Program Sites reveals two different types of weathering processes: In shallow (tens of meters), methanic sediments of slope basins with high organic carbon burial rates, reactive silicate minerals undergo incongruent dissolution through reaction with CO2 from methanogenesis. At greater burial depth (hundreds of meters), silicate weathering is dominated by authigenic smectite formation. This process is accompanied by uptake of water into the clay interlayers thus leading to elevated salinities in the surrounding pore water. Deep-seated smectite formation is more widespread than shallow silicate dissolution, as it is independent from the availability of CO2 from methanogenesis. Although solute transport is not focused enough to form cold seeps in the proper sense, tectonically induced, diffuse fluid flow transfers the deep-seated signal of smectite formation into the shallow sediments. The temperature-controlled conversion of smectite to illite is considered the most important dehydration process in marine forearc environments (depth of kilometers). However, in agreement with other studies at active margins (e.g. Aleutians, Cascadia, Nankai Trough) and despite ubiquitous evidence for smectite formation, little evidence for seafloor seepage of dehydration fluids could be found off Central Chile. We argue that the circular process of pore water uptake during smectite formation and release upon illitization implies a balanced freshwater budget and therefore a rather limited potential for net pore water freshening on a margin-wide scale. According to this rationale, pore water freshening at seafloor seeps preferentially occurs at lower latitudes (Central America, Barbados, Mediterranean Ridge) where terrestrial weathering is more intense thus leading to external (i.e. detrital) smectite and thus freshwater inputs to the subduction system.

    Beschreibung: During the last decade, two important collections of carbon relevant hydrochemical data have become available: GLODAP and CARINA. These collections comprise a synthesis of bottle data for all ocean depths from many cruises collected over several decades. For a majority of the cruises at least two carbon parameters were measured. However, for a large number of stations, samples or even cruises, the carbonate system is under-determined (i.e., only one or no carbonate parameterwas measured) resulting in data gaps for the carbonate system in these collections. A method for filling these gaps would be very useful, as it would help with estimations of the anthropogenic carbon (Cant) content or quantification of oceanic acidification. The aim of this work is to apply and describe, a 3D moving window multilinear regression algorithm (MLR) to fill gaps in total alkalinity (AT) of the CARINA and GLODAP data collections for the Atlantic. In addition to filling data gaps, the estimated AT values derived from the MLR are useful in quality control of the measurements of the carbonate system, as they can aid in the identification of outliers. For comparison, a neural network algorithm able to performnon-linear predictionswas also designed. The goal herewas to design an alternative approach to accomplish the sametask of filling AT gaps. Bothmethods return internally consistent results, thereby giving confidence in our approach.     Beschreibung: Five years of data from a line of dynamic height moorings (DHM), bottom-pressure recorders (BPR), and pressure-equipped inverted echo sounders (PIES) near the Atlantic Ocean western boundary at 26.5°N are used to evaluate the structure and variability of the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) during 2004–2009. Comparisons made between transports estimated from the DHM+BPR and those made by the PIES demonstrate that the two systems are collecting equivalent volume transport information (correlation coefficient r=0.96, root-mean-square difference=6 Sv; 1 Sv=106 m3 s−1). Integrated to ∼450 km off from the continental shelf and between 800 and 4800 dbar, the DWBC has a mean transport of approximately 32 Sv and a standard deviation during these five years of 16 Sv. Both the barotropic (full-depth vertical mean) and baroclinic flows have significant variability (changes exceeding 10 Sv) on time scales ranging from a few days to months, with the barotropic variations being larger and more energetic at all time scales. The annual cycle of the deep transport is highly dependent on the horizontal integration distance; integrating ∼100 km offshore yields an annual cycle of roughly similar magnitude but shifted in phase relative to that found from current meter arrays in the 1980–1990s, while the annual cycle becomes quite weak when integrating ∼450 km offshore. Variations in the DWBC transport far exceed those of the total basin-wide Meridional Overturning Circulation (standard deviations of 16 Sv vs. 5 Sv). Transport integrated in the deep layer out to the west side of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge still demonstrates a surprisingly high variance, indicating that some compensation of the western basin deep variability must occur in the eastern basin.

    Beschreibung: At the Rio+20 meeting in June 2012, governments of the world committed to rebuilding fish stock sizes by 2015 at least to levels that can produce the maximum sustainable yield (MSY), even if that would require the temporary closure of fisheries. This study explores the outcomes of such action for European stocks. In 2012, only 8 of 48 stocks (17%) were abundant enough to produce MSY and with a business as usual scenario, this number would not increase by 2015. In contrast, if fishing was reduced to levels consistent with rebuilding and if some fisheries were temporarily closed, 50–70% of the examined stocks would be able to reach the Rio+20 target by the end of 2015. In this scenario, after three years with reduced catches, fish supply from European stocks would reach and exceed the levels of 2011 already in 2016. The implications for fish, fishers and fish consumers are discussed. Highlights: ► This paper evaluates the commitments made by Rio+20 with regard to fisheries. ► It finds that 50-70% of the stocks could be rebuilt by 2015. ► For the rebuilding to occur, fishing has to be reduced and some fisheries closed. ► Seafood supply would be higher than currently from 2016 onward.

    Beschreibung: Arctic palaeorecords are important to understand the “natural range“ of forcing and feedback mechanisms within the context of past and present climate change in this temperature-sensitive region. A wide array of methods and archives now provide a robust understanding of the Holocene climate evolution. By comparison rather little is still known about older interglacials, and in particular, on the effects of the northward propagation of heat transfer via the Atlantic meridional ocean circulation (AMOC) into the Arctic. Terrestrial records from this area often indicate a warmer and moister climate during past interglacials than in the Holocene implying a more vigorous AMOC activity. This is in conflict with marine data. Although recognized as very prominent interglacials in Antarctic ice cores, cross-latitudinal surface ocean temperature reconstructions show that little of the surface ocean warmth still identified in the Northeast Atlantic during older interglacial peaks (e.g., MIS5e, 9, 11) was further conveyed into the polar latitudes, and that each interglacial developed its own specific palaeoclimate features. Interactive processes between water mass overturning and the hydrological system of the Arctic, and how both developed together out of a glacial period with its particular ice sheet configuration and relative sea-level history, determined the efficiency of an evolving interglacial AMOC. Because of that glacial terminations developed some very specific water mass characteristics, which also affected the climate evolution of the ensuing interglacial periods. Moreover, the observed contrasts in the Arctic-directed meridional ocean heat flux between past interglacials have implications for the palaeoclimatic evaluation of this polar region. Crucial environmental factors of the Arctic climate system, such as the highly dynamical interactions between deep water mass flow, surface ocean temperature/salinity, sea ice, and atmosphere, exert strong feedbacks on interglacial climate regionality that goes well beyond the Arctic. A sound interpretation of such processes from palaeoarchives requires a good understanding of the applied proxies. Fossils, in particular, are often key to the reconstruction of past conditions. But the tremendously flexible adaptation strategies of biota sometimes hampers further in-depth interpretations, especially when considering their palaeoenvironmental meaning in the context of rapid palaeoclimatic changes and long-term Pleistocene evolution.

    Beschreibung: Using the TANDY AMS facility (600 kV) at ETH Zurich the seawater-derived (authigenic) Be-10/Be-9 ratio of marine sediment samples is measured without the addition of Be-9 carrier. This novel method reduces systematic uncertainties because the Be-10/Be-9 ratio of a sample is determined in only one (AMS) measurement. A challenge of carrier-free AMS is to avoid any contamination of the sample with Be-9 during the chemical preparation. Further, the leaching procedure has to be reproducible and ideally should attack the authigenic Be of the sediments only, leaving the detrital Be untouched. The low amount of stable Be-9 in the unspiked samples causes low currents during the AMS measurement. This requires a good stability and sensitivity of the AMS setup. Our first results show that the new preparation method is reliable and that background from stable Be-9 is avoided. For a comparison study, sediment samples from two cores located in the Arctic Ocean (HLY0503-09JPC, HLY0503-14JPC) were used. The authigenic Be-10/Be-9 ratio of these samples had been determined previously applying the conventional method where Be-10 and Be-9 concentrations are measured separately by AMS and ICP-MS, respectively. The resulting sedimentation rates are in discrepancy with values derived from biomarkers. To cross check the Be-10/Be-9 based age model two samples from each core were measured again with the new carrier-free method. The carrier-free results show systematically higher authigenic Be-10/Be-9 ratios. The calculated sedimentation rates of about 0.2 cm/kyr, however, are consistent for the carrier free and the conventional method.

    Beschreibung: Many parasitic helminths exhibit mixed mating systems, and switches between self-fertilization and outcrossing may be influenced by environmental conditions and parasite demography. While inbreeding depression selects against the development of purely self-fertilizing populations, genetic compatibility may contribute to stabilizing mixed strategies. Here we study the effects of inbreeding and genetic compatibility on offspring fitness in the digenean trematode Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, a parasite with a three-host life cycle. Hatching rates and infection success in two intermediate hosts, the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis and the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, were used as proxies for parasite fitness. Single trematode clones and combinations of two and three different clones were allowed to reproduce sexually using naïve herring gulls (Larus argentatus) as definitive hosts. The hatched larvae were used to assess the proportion of selfed and outcrossed miracidia by means of microsatellite genotyping. These results were matched with hatching rates and infection success of inbred and outcrossed trematodes in both intermediate hosts. Inbreeding effects were obscured by differences in clone performance. In addition, clones outcrossed to a lesser extent than expected in some experimental pairings, indicating the importance of genetic compatibility.     Beschreibung: Understanding the controls that determine the spatial distribution and internal heterogeneities of black shales in the Mesozoic ocean has been a focal point of research over many decades. The consensus is that atmosphere–land–ocean interactions influenced variations in marine biogeochemistry and sediment supply, thus exerting fundamental controls on the richness and quality of sedimentary organic matter (OM) and ultimately on petroleum source rock distribution and its generation potential. Internal, small-scale heterogeneities in black shales that have been reported from all ocean settings were often linked to orbitally-driven fluctuations in continental runoff and marine upwelling. The two processes are generically related under the ascending (tropical) and descending (subtropical) limbs of the palaeo-Hadley Cells, with fluctuations at variable time (seasonal, orbital, geological) and spatial (shelf, margin, deep basin) scales. These dynamic variations translate into characteristic patterns of OM quantity and quality, best preserved near the continents where the forcing effects are strongest. The expression of these orbital-scale interactions are not well constrained at the basin scale, however, they may hold a key to better understand the distribution of heterogeneities in black shales. This study presents a conceptual framework that links OM quality and quantity in Cretaceous Atlantic sediments with the dominant processes that operated under the Hadley Cells. Using a comprehensive compilation of bulk organic geochemical data – total organic carbon concentration (TOC), hydrogen index (HI), oxygen index (OI), and kerogen type – we explore how basic geochemical patterns can be used to identify the underlying generic processes. We utilise published and new data from deep ocean sites of the DSDP/ODP program, as well as one palaeo-shelf setting (Tarfaya), spanning a latitudinal transect from the outer subtropics to the palaeo-equator during the Albian, the Cenomanian–Turonian, and the Coniacian–Santonian. This study emphasises the potential of integrating orbital scale datasets and wide spatial coverage as a predictive tool for black shale formation across ocean basins.

    Beschreibung: We present results from the first three-dimensional (3D) marine seismic dataset ever collected over volcanic landslide deposits, acquired offshore of the Soufrière Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat in the Lesser Antilles. The 3D data enable detailed analysis of various features in and around these mass wasting deposits, such as surface deformation fabrics, the distribution and size of transported blocks, change of emplacement direction and erosion into seafloor strata. Deformational features preserved on the surface of the most recent debris avalanche deposit (Deposit 1) reveal evidence for spatially-variant deceleration as the mass failure came to rest on the seafloor. Block distributions suggest that the failure spread out very rapidly, with no tendency to develop longitudinal ridges. An older volcanic flank collapse deposit (Deposit 2) appears to be intrinsically related to large-scale secondary failure of seafloor sediments. We observe pronounced erosion directly down-slope of a prominent headwall, where translational sliding of well-stratified sediments was initiated. Deep-reaching faults controlled the form and location of the headwall, and stratigraphic relationships suggest that sliding was concurrent with volcanic flank collapse emplacement. We also identified a very different mass wasting unit between Deposit 1 and Deposit 2 that was likely emplaced as a series of particle-laden mass flows derived from pyroclastic flows, much like the recent (since 1995) phase of deposition offshore Montserrat but at a much larger scale. This study highlights the power of 3D seismic data in understanding landslide emplacement processes offshore of volcanic islands. Highlights: ► 3D seismic data show new detail of volcanic landslide deposits offshore Montserrat. ► Volcanic flank collapse material has been diverted around seafloor topographic highs. ► This bending during emplacement has caused pronounced erosion into seafloor strata. ► Erosion can destabilize seafloor slopes, which then fail as translational slides. ► Block distributions and surface deformation give insight into debris avalanche style.

    Beschreibung: In 2007 the Sismantilles II experiment was conducted to constrain structure and seismicity in the central Lesser Antilles subduction zone. The seismic refraction data recorded by a network of 27 OBSs over an area of 65 km×95 km provide new insights on the crustal structure of the forearc offshore Martinique and Dominica islands. The tomographic inversion of first arrival travel times provides a 3D P-wave velocity model down to 15 km. Basement velocity gradients depict that the forearc is made up of two distinct units: A high velocity gradient domain named the inner forearc in comparison to a lower velocity gradient domain located further trenchward named the outer forearc. Whereas the inner forearc appears as a rigid block uplifted and possibly tilted as a whole to the south, short wavelength deformations of the outer forearc basement are observed, beneath a 3 to 6 km thick sedimentary pile, in relation with the subduction of the Tiburon Ridge and associated seafloor reliefs. North, offshore Dominica Island, the outer forearc is 70 km wide. It extends as far as 180 km to the east of the volcanic front where it acts as a backstop on which the accretionary wedge developed. Its width decreases strongly to the south to terminate offshore Martinique where the inner forearc acts as the backstop. The inner forearc is likely the extension at depth of theMesozoicmagmatic crust outcropping to the north in La Désirade Island and along the scarp of the Karukera Spur. The outer forearc could be either the eastern prolongation of the inner forearc, but the crust was thinned and fractured during the past tectonic history of the area or by recent subduction processes, or an oceanic terrane more recently accreted to the island arc.

    Beschreibung: The Awsard pluton in the Moroccan part of the Reguibat Rise, West African Craton, contains the oldest kalsilite-bearing rocks discovered to date, with a SHRIMP zircon U/Pb age of 2.46 ± 0.01 Ga. The pluton is composed of nepheline syenites, kalsilite syenites and minor silica-saturated syenites, all with the same primitive Sr and Nd initial isotope compositions and Nd model age that cluster around 87Sr/86Sr2.46Ga ≈ 0.7029, ɛNd2.46Ga ≈ −1.4, and TDM ≈ 2.75 Ga. Silica-saturated syenites are in fact contact fenites that grade into nepheline syenites, but the two feldspathoidal syenites are true magmatic rocks that crystallized from two coeval highly fractionated K-rich magmas with sharply different chemical compositions. Chemical, isotopic and textural evidence suggests that the two magmas originated by liquid immiscibility within an already fractionated alkaline potassic magma of asthenospheric origin that split in two phases, a nephelinitic melt rich in HFSE + REE, and a kalsilitic melt poor in HFSE + REE. The Awsard pluton, spatially associated to carbonatites and other alkaline rocks, does not mark a Late Archean fossil subduction zone but represents the first manifestation of a Paleoproterozoic alkaline province located in the Reguibat Rise, the full extent and importance of which is yet to be determined.
