    Notes: Summary The lengths of the chromosomes during mitotic and meiotic cycles of the male germ cells ofAnacridium aegyptium L. (Orthoptera) have been measured: the shortening of the chromosomes was found to be about the same in the spermatogonial mitosis and in the 2nd meiotic division from prophase to metaphase (about 3:1); as well as from the premetaphase to the mid-metaphase of mitosis and from diplotene to the 1st metaphase of meiosis (about 2:1). In mitosis the longer chromosomes become shorter than the shorter ones; the contrary is true for zygotene to pachytene; the same in the other stages of meiosis.

De minces lamelles d'os usées et polies ont été soumisesin vitro à des traitements divers (micro-incinération à 500° ou à 700°C, gabriélisation, décalcification partielle, traitement par la hyaluronidase, par l'acide phosphowolframique, etc.) et traitées en suite avec une faible solution de chlorure de Ca45. L'étude des autoradiographies démontre que seule la destruction totale des composants organiques de la matrice osseuse entraîne des modifications appréciables de la distribution du radiocalcium.

    Notes: Summary The registration of the action potentials of muscle, nerve centres and finally nerve cells has produced many essential results during the last decade. But it can be shown, that quite a number of these results were obtained in experiments on the action currents of human muscles 30 years ago. In some respects the human experiments are of even greater significance than those on animals. The so-called monosynaptic reflexes are essentially identical with a group of reflexes which were described by the author thirty years ago and named “Eigenreflexe”. At that time the monosynaptic quality of those reflexes was derived merely from anatomical data (direct collaterals from the posterior roots to the anterior horn cells, Lenhossék). The synapse-time was estimated only as probably lying near 1 msec. These monosynaptic “Eigenreflexe” are subordinated in characteristic manner to the polysynaptic reflexes and especially to the voluntary movements. The voluntary innervation as a whole is not changed by the monosynaptic reflexes but it is only distributed in a special way, as is clearly demonstrated by the “Vibrations-versuch.” The experiments on the inhibition following the monosynaptic reflexes (silent period) and on the subnormal phase of 30 years ago are compared with the modern results and it is shown, that the experiments on man and on animals supplement one another.

The author has established the cytological conditions in seven species of Muridae and elucidated some doubtful points belonging 15 other species.Microtus arvalis, M. orcadensis andM. incertus have the same formule and must be considered as very akin. The chromosomic set ofClethrionomys gapperi (North-America) doesn't differ from that ofC. glareolus (Europe). Three genera of Gerbillinae exhibit sex-chromosomes of the type found in palearctic Cricetinae. ByArvicola scherman andMicrotus nivalis a reinvestigation shows thatX andY are both metacentric. It seems preferable to putNeotoma floridana andPeromyscus leucopus, likely with the other genera of nearctic Cricetinac, in a special under-family, for they bear no cytological ressemblance with the true hamsters of the Old World.Dipodomys merriami, an Heteromyidae, has 70 and not 86 chromosomes (Cross, 1931). There is in none species coexistence of pre- and post-reduction, although pictures of chiasmas may be sometimes observed. The conception ofKoller andDarlington does not agree with the facts.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die « Conformation » aller Carvomenthole und Carvomenthylamine wurde auf der Grundlage der Vorstellung von polaren und äquatorialen Bindungen abgeleitet. Die Konfiguration von Carvomenthol, Neocarvomenthol, Carvomenthylamin und Neocarvomenthylamin, die aus ihrer « Conformation » folgt, ist identisch mit der Konfiguration, die vonRead und Mitarbeitern hauptsächlich auf der Grundlage der von-Auwersschen Regel vorgeschlagen wurde. Die « Conformation » des Isocarvomenthols und des Isocarvomenthylamins lässt erkennen, dass sich alle Substituenten in diesen beiden Verbindungen inCis-Stellung befinden.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung An einem besonders günstigen Beispiel (w-Locus vonDrosophila melanogaster) soll zur Klärung der Frage beigetragen werden, wieweit Crossing-over zwischen Allelen ein allgemein genetisches Phänomen darstellt. Es wurden vorläufig 8 heterozygote Kombinationen von 8 Allelen geprüft, wobei die Chromosomen mitsc, ec, cv odery, ec markiert waren. Bisher wurden Ausnahmetiere (Entstehung neuer Allele) beiw, w bl undw, w co gefunden, und zwar 10 von 59292 Fliegen. Da alle 10 Fliegen gleichzeitig Crossovers zwischensc undec sind, entstehen die Ausnahmetypen offenbar durch Crossing-over und nicht durch Rückmutation. Weitere Versuche sind jedoch nötig, um sicherzustellen, dass es sich nicht um ungleiches Crossing-over handelt.

    Notes: Summary After the injection of different monosaccharides into the phloem ofImpatiens Holstii, several sugars can be detected in the nectar usually consisting of pure saccharose. Paper chromatography indicates that besides fructose, glucose, saccharose and raffinose a new sugar called “impatiose” is secreted. Hydrolysis suggests that “impatiose” is a trisaccharide composed of two molecules of fructose and one molecule of glucose. The nectar contains enzymes which cause the transformation of sugars.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Hefezellen, die in einem synthetischen Substrat mit verschiedenen Mengen von (NH4)2SO4 (mit Phosphatpuffer) kultiviert worden waren, wurden bestrahlt (100 kV Röntgenstrahlen). Darauf wurde die Gärung von Glukose manometrisch bestimmt. Die in einem wenig Stickstoff enthaltenden Milieu kultivierte Hefe hatte einen verminderten Stickstoffgehalt und ein erniedrigtes $$Q_{CO_2 }^{N_2 } $$ . Die Gärung solcher Hefe war nach Einwirkung kleiner Strahlendosis geringer als die Gärung normaler Hefe. Das Gärungsvermögen von Hefe mit erniedrigtem Stickstoffgehalt wurde durch eine Strahlendosis von 30 000 und 60 000 r stärker herabgesetzt als die Gärung normaler Hefer.

    Notes: Summary Multiple micro-embolism in the coronary system of the rabbit heart-when this occurs to an unequal extent in the two halves-causes an especially pronounced fall in cardiac performance. To explain this the hypothesis is suggested that the heart is accustomed to a certain relationship of performance between its right and left halves. Should the heart be forced to acute efforts because of an added burden on the circulatory system, thus disturbing the relationship between the two halves, this would be equivalent to an additional strain on the heart.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Bei gewissen reversiblen Reaktionen wird, unter bestimmten, stark eingeschränkten, aber doch häufig vorkommenden Bedingungen, die Geschwindigkeit der Gleichgewichtseinstellung für dieHin-Reaktion nur durch die Geschwindigkeitskonstante derRück-Reaktion bestimmt. Diese besondere Anwendung des Massenwirkungsgesetzes wird an der Hemmungsentwicklung in gewissen Enzym-Inhibitor-Systemen illustriert. In einem reversiblen Enzym-Inhibitor-System, in dem der grössere Teil der Inhibitormoleküle frei bleibt, erfolgt die Einstellung eines gegebenen Hemmungsgrades um so langsamer, je fester das Inhibitormolekül im entstehenden Komplex gebunden ist. Kann der Hemmungsgrad gegen die Zeit aufgetragen werden (vom Augenblick der Mischung von Enzym und Inhibitor an gerechnet), so lässt sich aus der erhaltenen Kurve die Geschwindigkeitskonstante der Dissoziation berechnen, selbst wenn die Konzentrationen der Reaktionsteilnehmer unbekannt sind.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Trennung des Phänomens der Photosynthese grüner Pflanzen in eine Lichtreaktion und die vom Licht unabhängige Reduktion der Kohlensäure werden diskutiert. Die Reduktion der Kohlensäure und das Schicksal des assimilierten Kohlenstoffs wurden untersucht mit Hilfe der Spurenmethode (Markierung der assimilierten Kohlensäure mit C14) und der Papierchromatographie. Ein Reaktionszyklus wird vorgeschlagen, in dem Phosphoglyzerinsäure das erste isolierbare Assimilationsprodukt ist. Analysierung des Extraktes von Algen, die in einem stationären Zustand für längere Zeit radioaktive Kohlensäure assimilierten, lieferte weitere Auskunft über den vorgeschlagenen Zyklus und gestattete, die am Zyklus beteiligten Mengen einiger Substanzen ungefähr zu bestimmen. Die frühere Vermutung, dass Licht den Respirationszyklus beeinflusst, wird bestätigt. Die Möglichkeit der Mitwirkung von α-Liponsäure (α-lipoic acid) oder einer verwandten Substanz, bei diesem Effekt und im Photosynthesezyklus, wird erörtert.

We propose an improved method which enables us to observe the nucleoids in any physiological state. Secondary vegetative forms are shown in the division process and 3 resting forms. The samples are prepared from liquid cultures by means of a filtration through the supporting membrane. Changes in the physiological conditions are avoided.

This gland is paired and lies on both sides in the prothorax between the two principal tracheal trunks. Figure 1 shows the whole left gland. In Figure 2 a part of a gland with the typical big cell nuclei with chromatin granules is shown. Preliminary experimental investigations confirm the hormonal function of this gland provoking metamorphosis.

    Notes: Summary The nuclear membrane ofAmoeba proteus appears in electron microscopical preparations to be composed of two layers, one porous containing pores of about 1200 Å diameter, the other one representing a continuous membrane of densely packed very small globular particles. The layer containing the pores is in contrast to the continuous layer very resistant to mechanical actions and to different fixing fluids and seems to contain rather few lipoids. The materials from the inner regions of the nucleus are difficult to fragment. Small fragments show filamentous reticula with small globular bodies.

    Notes: Summary After performing an abrasion of the rabbit's cornea (5 mm), the authors studied the action of a suspension in physiological serum of desoxycorticosterone 1 and 5% and Cortisone 2.5% on the epithelial regeneration of the cornea. The “test cornea” received physiological serum. The experiments were laid out in a so-called “balanced incomplete bloc design”. With such a planning of the experiments, there is an increase in precision which is estimated to be of 560%. Epithelisation times are: 51.2 hours for the test cornea which received physiological serum; 53.6 for desoxycorticosterone 5%; 55.8 for desoxycorticosterone 1%; 58.6 for Cortisone 2.5%.

    Notes: Summary The cellular distribution and storage of protein in the tissues of the mouse was examined after intravenous injection of hen egg albumen, rabbit and mouse serum, respectively. The new microtechnical method described allows direct visualization of native proteins stored as droplets by the histiocytes of the connective tissue and by the Kupffer cells. The method is based on the fact that subsequently to fixation with gold chloride and methanol the protein droplets in the cytoplasm can be intensely stained with methylene blue eosinate. Thus it becomes possible to trace the course of the proteins in the body without any previous labelling. The main site of storage of introduced native proteins is the histiocytic system of the connective tissue. Especially foreign proteins will accumulate very rapidly and in large amounts in the histiocytes, to disappear again soon. Particular significance should be attributed to the fact that even homologous serum proteins constantly enter the reticuloendothelial cells and may be stored as granules. Together with the protein, the substances adsorbed to it gain access to the cells, offering an explanation for the reticulo-endothelial storage of acid vital dyes, of germanin and of many other important substances. It can be regarded as a general rule that every macromolecular polymer of hydrophilic character-those of natural origin, as for instance the polymeric carbohydrates, glycoproteins and proteins, as well as synthetic products like polyvinyl-pyrrolidon-enters the reticulo-endothelial cells and is stored as granules.

    Notes: Summary The ordinary methods of determining electrochemical potentials cease to be applicable in extreme dilution. The energy conditions of the formation of very thin electrolytic deposits (less than a monoatomic layer) can then be explored by means of radioactive indicators, following particular polarisation curves. These curves give the rate of deposition or the equilibria of distribution as a function of the potential applied to an inert electrode. A discussion is given of the relationship between the critical potential defined by such curves and the theoretical potential computed from the Nernst equation for the given concentration. Experimental results are collected for the critical potentials of the deposition of Po, Bi, Pb, Ag, etc., from extremely dilute solutions on to various metals. It is shown that the heterogeneity of the electrode surface plays a considerable rôle in these electrolyses. It explains the overvoltage and the undervoltage observed in certain cases, and the exponential form of the polarisation curves. In particular, the repartition of bismuth between a nitric acid solution of the ions of this metal and a silver cathode is represented by two Freundlich isotherms: — one of these with an exponent 1/n〈1 corresponds to very small coverages and is explained by the heterogeneity of the surface; the other one with 1/n〉1 is valid for coverages greater than 1% and is due to the intervention of attraction forces between the deposited atoms. Finally, it is concluded, from electrolytic experiments on Bi+++ 3.10−16 N solutions, that even at this extreme dilution (6.104 ions/cm3) the thermodynamic activity of these ions in solution is quite normal.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Bei der Synthese kardiotoxischer Abkömmlinge von Aminodiphenylsulfonen fiel die Aufmerksamkeit auf Dialkylaminoalkylderivate des o-Aminodiphenylsulfids, die in enger struktureller Beziehung zu den Antihistaminika und Antiparkinsonsubstanzen der Phenothiazinserie zu stehen schienen. Die o-(Dialkylaminoalkylamino)-diphenylsulfide wurden durch Kondensation von Diäthylaminoäthylchlorid mit o-Aminodiphenylsulfid oder durch LiAlH4-Reduktion der entsprechenden und homologer Dialkylaminoacylverbindungen, die sich ebenfalls als pharmakologisch interessant erwiesen, hergestellt. Die ersten pharmakologischen Versuche zeigten, dass in den Verbindungen der Nikotinantagonismus der Phenothiazinderivate erhalten bleibt, währenddem die Antihistaminwirkung annulliert ist. Die Chlorhydrate des o-(β-Diäthylaminopropylamino) - diphenylsulfids (VIII) und des o-(β-Dimethylaminopropionylamido)-diphenylsulfids (XIII) wiesen beim Kaninchen zu dem von Nikotin hervorgerufenen Tremor einen Antagonismus auf, der grössenordnungsweise dem des Diparcols (II) entspricht.

    Notes: Summary The behaviour of stereoscopic after-images was studied under conditions of temporary blindness of one eye (effected by artificially raising the intraocular pressure). From these experiments it became evident that temporary blindness of one eye, and consequent disappearance of the respective after-image, also resulted in the cessation of the stereoscopic character of the binocular combination-image which, however, reappeared on release of the pressure and consequent return of the function of the temporarily eliminated eye. Therefore, the origin of stereoscopic after-images is a peripheral, i.e. retinal, one.

Das Pigment scheint auf dem Zerfall von Amöbozyten zu beruhen, die dieselben sind wie die Amöbozyten der Zölomflüssigkeit. Es konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass die Amöbozyten ein Phenolasesystem besitzen. Das Koagulum, das durch Zusammenballung dieser Amöbozyten geformt wird, bräunt sich durch Luftzutritt infolge der Pigmentproduktion, die an die zytoplasmatischen Einschlusskörperchen gebunden ist.

    Notes: Summary It is possible to isolate from the brain a fraction closely allied to ketosteroids which, when injected subcutaneously into adrenalectomized rats in suitable quantity, causes a diminution of lymphocytes, while in adrenalectomized mice it increases the hepatic glycogen, though not to any high degree. The injection of this substance in the rat induces a diminution of the tonus of abdominal and hind leg muscles, catatonia and drowsiness. These symptoms disappear temporarily after repeated mechanical stimulations, and reappear when the subject is left in peace and may continue for some hours; subsequently the animals do not manifest any apparent irreversible symptoms.

    Notes: Summary The following substances are investigated in emission in the Schüler's discharge tube: furan, pyrrole, thiophen, selenophen, N-methylpyrrole. Different radicals are observed depending on the particular molecule and on the particular pressure range. An emission continuum in the same spectral region and of the same structure for all molecules is also observed. The resulting electronic configuration of pyrrole is more similar to that of furan than to that of thiophen. On the other hand, the electronic configuration of thiophen together with the electronic configurations of selenophen and N-methylpyrrole are probably similar to that of benzene. The continuous spectra of emission are interpreted as recombination spectra of the radicals.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Analyse der von Lithiumchlorid imLimnaea-Keim erzeugten Missbildungen hat gezeigt, dass in der Entwicklung dieser Art ein animales Gradientfeld mitspielt, das die Abgrenzung der Anlagen im ektodermalen Gebiet beherrscht. Auf späterem Stadium wird die Schalendrüse im Ektoderm durch eine Kontaktinduktion von seiten des Urdarms induziert. Die Lithiumwirkung ist phasenspezifisch; wahrscheinlich gibt es eine sehr kurze Periode maximaler Empfindlichkeit gegen Ende des vierzelligen Stadiums. Lithium verursacht eine Schwellung der Kerne und eine Verdichtung des Zytoplasmas, besonders des kortikalen Plasmas; die ooplasmatische Segregation ist gestört. Weiterhin beeinflusst es die physikalischen Eigenschaften des Plasmas. In physiologischer Hinsicht weicht die Lithiumwirkung beiLimnaea in einigen Punkten von der bei Seeigeln ab.

Während der Hydrolyse lässt sich das Verschwinden des Substrats unmittelbar feststellen. Überdies ist die Verwendung von Urease, wie beim üblichen Vorgehen, nicht erforderlich. Mit der neuen Methode können spezifisch hemmende Wirkungen auf die Urease untersucht werden.
