Summary

Toxicity of solutions is estimated by observing the decrease in motility ofParamaecium caudatum. The motility is measured by means of an electro-optical device as follows: the paramaecia are dark-field illuminated and projected on a glass disk painted with a chess-board-like “Raster” pattern. The variations of light intensity induced thereby are counted by a photocell and a suitable amplifier-discriminator circuit.
