    Description: The in situ measurements from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) Ion Mass Spectrometer have led to the detection of H2(+) ions in the Venus ionosphere. Although H2(+) is a minor ion, its measurement provides the first direct clue for determining the H2 abundance in the upper atmosphere of Venus. A photochemical model using PVO measurements is used to derive an H2 mixing ratio of 10 ppm below 140 km altitude. The presence of this much H2 confirms a previous prediction that the reactions of O(+) with H2 and subsequent recombination of OH(+) provide an important source of nonthermal H observed in the Venus atmosphere. The estimated escape flux for H is 10 to the 8th per sq cm/s.

    Description: Confirmation and refinement of Saturnian magnetosphere features established by the Pioneer 11 emission are claimed for Voyager 1 magnetic field studies of the planet. The radius of the magnetopause at the subsolar point is 23 Saturn radii, and a magnetic tail of 80 Saturn radii diameter was discovered. The tail extends away from the sun and is similar to both type II comet tails and the terrestrial and Jovian magnetic tails. Data from Voyager's very close flyby of Titan, which is located within the Saturn magnetosphere, shows an absence of any substantial, intrinsic satellite magnetic field.

    Description: A classification scheme is presented for the lineaments and associated polygonal patterns observed on the surface of Europa, and the frequency distribution of the polygons is discussed in terms of the stress-relief fracturing of the surface. The lineaments are divided on the basis of albedo, morphology, orientation and characteristic geometry into eight groups based on Voyager 2 images taken at a best resolution of 4 km. The lineaments in turn define a system of polygons varying in size from small reticulate patterns the limit of resolution to 1,000,000 sq km individuals. Preliminary analysis of polygon side frequency distributions reveals a class of polygons with statistics similar to those found in complex terrestrial terrains, particularly in areas of well-oriented stresses, a class with similar statistics around the antijovian point, and a class with a distribution similar to those seen in terrestrial tensional fracture patterns. Speculations concerning the processes giving rise to the lineament patterns are presented.

    Description: The structure and composition of the rings of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus are discussed, with special attention given to the rings of Saturn. Processes that are known to shape the rings are then described. Alternative explanations for the origin of the rings are proposed. It is pointed out that the architecture of a ring system results from the interplay of a number of forces, among them gravitational forces due to moons outside the rings and the moonlets embedded in them, electromagnetic forces due to the planet's rotating magnetic field, and even the gentle forces exerted by the dilute gaseous medium in which the rings rotate.

    Description: A Martian atmospheric phenomenon called a bore wave has been observed by the Viking imaging system during late spring and early summer of two Martian years, in the Tharsis Ridge region of the planet. The observational data are presented, and a tentative explanation is offered for the occurrence of this feature, formed by airflow and which behaves like a thermally induced diurnal katabatic breeze.

    Description: UBV photometry and lightcurves of asteroid 29 Amphitrite from all observed apparitions (March 1956-May 1977) are combined to obtain a phase function having a linear phase coefficient of 0.030 + or - 0.002 mag/deg and a mean absolute magnitude of 6.19 + or - 0.04. Amphitrite displays a reddening of its B - V color index with increasing solar phase angle: 0.816 + or - 0.004 at a phase angle of 2 deg and 0.848 + or - 0.004 at 23 deg. Since Amphitrite's orbital inclination is low (6 deg) and its lightcurve amplitudes range between 0.06 and 0.11 mag, and are well distributed in longitude, it is concluded that the obliquity of its pole is significantly different from zero. During some apparitions Amphitrite's light curves display only one maximum and minimum per 5.3904 + or - 0.007-hr rotation period while in others as many as five of each are present. This is interpreted to mean that Amphitrite has a quasi-spherical shape with a highly irregular and/or variegated surface.

    Description: Thermal structures including major white ovals, hot spot regions, barges and a belt zone pair in the Jovian atmosphere are investigated using Voyager IRIS data. Atmosphere above anticyclonic features is cold relative to the immediate surroundings in the upper troposphere and tropopause region, which is consistent with upwelling and divergence in that part of the atmosphere. Localized cyclonic features are warm relative to their surroundings which implies subsidence with accompanying convergence. Thermal wind shear indicates a decay of the vorticity with height in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, and vertical velocities imply an upper limit of vertical mixing times near the tropopause of about 20 years. Various possible models are also examined, including radiative heating, vertical wave propagation, and thermally indirect merdional cells.

    Description: Voyager 1 high-resolution images of Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS) and White Oval BC are used to map flow fields within these two areas. The relative vorticity is computed as a function of semi-major axis length and position angle in a coordinate system consisting of concentric ellipses of equal eccentricity. Wind speeds of 110-120 m/s are observed near the outer edge of both features, and along their minor axes relative vorticity profiles reach a maximum of 0.00006/s. Maximum Rossby numbers of 0.36 are computed for flows within both features, and are found to be low, indicating geostrophic constraints on the flow. The difference in streamline curvature within the GRS and the Oval BC is found to compensate for the difference in planetary vorticity at the respective latitudes of the features. Finally, motions within the central region of the GRS are slower and more random than around the spot's outer portion.

    Description: Temperatures and thermal winds over the Great Red Spot (GRS) are derived from Voyager IRIS data for atmospheric pressures between 3 and 500 mbar. A cold tropopause implies a decrease in anticyclonic vorticity with height above 500 mbar through the lower stratosphere. Observations at 5 microns indicate that there is little emission from the GRS itself, although there is enhanced emission from a ring around it. The behavior of the tropopause and 5 micron temperatures are considered to be results of circulation which rises within the GRS and subsides in the area around it. Results are discussed in the context of several theoretical models of the GRS, and latent heat release as an energy source is considered. Dynamical scalings based on an axisymmetric frictionally controlled vortex indicate that the large-scale dynamics of the GRS are linear, as opposed to those of a tropical cyclone which are nonlinear.

    Description: Voyagers 1 and 2 narrow angle frames are used to obtain displacements of features at resolutions of 130 km over time intervals of 1 Jovian rotation. It is shown that the mean zonal velocity profile does not change by a measurable amount between Voyagers 1 and 2, which is consistent with previous observations. It is also shown that the curvature of the velocity profile vanes varies with latitudes in the range from -3 beta to +2 beta. The barotropic stability criterion is violated at 10 latitudes between + and - 60 deg, and the rate of conversion of eddy kinetic energy into zonal mean kinetic energy is in the range from 1.5 to 3.0 per sq Wm for a layer 2.5 bar deep. The rate of energy conversion is more than 10% of the total infrared heat flux for Jupiter, as compared to the earth where it is only 0.1% of the infrared, which suggests that the two planets possess fundamentally different thermomechanical energy cycles.

    Description: Coherently related S and X band signals of 2.3 and 8.4 GHz, respectively, which were transmitted from Voyagers 1 and 2 were used to probe the Jovian atmosphere. Height profiles of the gas refractivity, molecular number density, pressure, temperature, and microwave absorption in the troposphere and stratosphere were observed at latitudes ranging from 0 to 70 deg S. At 1000 mbar, the temperature was + or - 5 K and the lapse rate was equal to the adiabatic value of 2.1 K/km within the resolution of the measurements. The ammonia abundance in this region was 0.022 + or - 0.008%, which is in good agreement with values derived from cosmic abundance considerations. The tropopause at the 140 mbar level had a temperature of 110 K, which increased with increasing altitude, reaching 160 + or - 20 K in the 10 to 1 mbar region. Significant horizontal density variations were detected in the stratosphere, which implies a nonuniform temperature and aerosol distribution across the Jovian disk or across high- and low-pressure regions due to local atmospheric dynamics.

    Description: Full disk measurements recorded by the 0.4-1.7 micron radiometer on Voyager 1 indicate a geometric albedo of 0.274 + or - 0.013. This measurement and the Pioneer-based phase integral of 1.25 yield a Jovian Bond albedo of 0.343 + or - 0.032. Infrared spectra yield a thermal emission of 1.359 + or - 0.014 x .001 W/sq cm, which corresponds to an equivalent blackbody temperature of 124.4 + or - 0.3 K. In addition, the internal heat flux of Jupiter is estimated to be 5.444 + or - 0.425 x .0001 W/sq cm, and the energy balance defined as the ratio of emitted thermal to absorbed solar energy is 1.668 + or - 0.085.

    Description: The helium abundance in the Jovian atmosphere is derived from Voyager 1 data by two methods. The first method uses only infrared spectra from selected locations on the planet while the second method uses a thermal profile independently derived from radio occultation measurements and infrared spectra recorded near the occultation point. A hydrogen mole fraction of 0.897 plus or minus 0.030 is obtained from the first method, while the second method gives 0.880 plus or minus 0.036, corresponding to helium mass fractions of 0.19 plus or minus 0.05 and 0.21 plus or minus 0.06, respectively. The estimated errors for the first method are primarily due to systematic uncertainties in the H2 and He absorption coefficients, while those for the second method result mainly from errors in the radio occultation profile and are less well known. Random errors in the measured infrared spectra are found to be negligible in both cases. The results are consistent with a uniform mix of hydrogen and helium within Jupiter's interior, but a modest amount of helium depletion (Delta Y equal to or less than 0.05) cannot be excluded.

    Description: Nine eruption plumes which were observed during the Voyager 1 encounter with Io are discussed. During the Voyager 2 encounter, four months later, eight of the eruptions were still active although the largest became inactive sometime between the two encounters. Plumes range in height from 60 to over 300 km with corresponding ejection velocities of 0.5 to 1.0 km/s and plume sources are located on several plains and consist of fissures or calderas. The shape and brightness distribution together with the pattern of the surface deposition on a plume 3 is simulated by a ballistic model with a constant ejection velocity of 0.5 km/s and ejection angles which vary from 0-55 deg. The distribution of active and recent eruptions is concentrated in the equatorial regions and indicates that volcanic activity is more frequent and intense in the equatorial regions than in the polar regions. Due to the geologic setting of certain plume sources and large reservoirs of volatiles required for the active eruptions, it is concluded that sulfur volcanism rather than silicate volcanism is the most likely driving mechanism for the eruption plumes.

    Description: Arc-shaped structures that dominate Jupiter's decametric emission are discussed in terms of a magnetic fine structure. The sequence of arcs manifest the occurence of widespread fine structures similar to the white ovals on Jupiter's visible surface. An arc concave toward increasing time occurs at the east limb passage, and an arc convex occurs at the west limb passage, which is consistent with the early source producing vertex early arcs, and the late source producing vertex late arcs. Due to the geometry of the Io plasma torus (IPT) which is arranged so that Io skims the northern surface of the IPT, for any connection between Io and Jupiter's surface that involves Alfven waves, the propagation time, the refraction and the directional defocusing of these waves must be strongly influenced by the amount of Alfven wave path length between the instantaneous position of Io and the surface of the IPT.

    Description: The IR thermal emission from cometary dust is analyzed by two size distribution functions, Sekanina A and a modified Sekanina Miller distribution. The resulting thermal emission spectra are illustrated for heliocentric distances 0.15 to 1.6 AU. The Sekania A distribution does not predict the observed heliocentric variation in the flux ratio I (4.8 micron) I (3.5 micron) for bright comets. A size distribution intermediate between the two presented is a better representation of the dust in recently observed comets.

    Description: A comprehensive description is given of the Jovian MS magnetic fields, and explanations of these phenomena are proposed. While emphasizing Voyager 1 and 2 magnetic field observations and their relations to the plasma observations, it is also shown that the same phenomena are present in the Pioneer 10 magnetic field data. An unusually high occurrence of nearly north or south fields is observed in the outbound MS, especially in the vicinity of the MP. It is noted that the outbound MS fields and their variations tend to occur in a plane parallel to the local MP, according to large scale MP models.

    Description: A number of high-resolution images of Jupiter's northern hemisphere were received from the imaging photopolarimeter (IPP) aboard Pioneer 11 in 1974. Erratic scanning of the IPP caused severe distortions in three scientifically important images, which until now have never been satisfactorily restored. New rectification and enhancement techniques, implemented on up-to-date image processing hardware, yielding images of sufficient quality to enable full scientific exploitation of the photometric data are reported.

    Description: An attempt is made to understand the physical and kinematic conditions in the M16 active star formation site, by means of mapping observations of neutral and ionized hydrogen and observations of (C-12)O from selected positions within the H II regions. The 21-cm maps suggest that at least two neutral clouds are present in the M16 complex, one of which is likely to be the remains of the cloud in which star formation initially occurred, and the other is probably the cold gas remaining from a disrupted cloud edge where the ionization front has crossed the cloud-intercloud boundary. Multislit echelle spectra of the H-alpha line are obtained to determine the physical conditions within the ionized gas, and H-alpha maps show that the ionized gas is systematically blueshifted in the east and splits into two streams in the southwest.

    Description: Images of Ganymede and Callisto, Jupiter's two largest moons, among the largest known predominantly icy planetary objects, were obtained by the two Voyager spacecraft. Voyager images were used to investigate the surface characteristics, geologic processes, and internal evolution of Ganymede and Callisto. Ganymede shows two principal types of terrain: one dark, old, and heavily cratered; and another brighter, younger, and characterized by complex patterns of grooves. Voyager imagers were used to determine photometric properties of surface features on both bodies at phase angles up to 120 deg. Surface temperatures are calculated for the major terrain types. Callisto is found to be somewhat warmer than Ganymede. The temperature difference between grooved and cratered terrain on Ganymede is small. A model for the origin of grooved terrain is considered in which extension creates broad, downdropped rift zones in the crust that are filled with water or ice from below.

    Description: A model is constructed which views regolith evolution on asteroids as a stochastic process. Average values are shown to be poor descriptors of regolith depth. The utility of the average depth is not significantly increased by avoiding large craters or thick ejecta deposits, a procedure adopted in previous regolith studies. The statistical uncertainty associated with regolith depth severely limits the power of regolith models in predicting parent-body size for brecciated meteorites. A Monte Carlo algorithm was used to simulate the random walks and corresponding charged-particle irradiation histories of grains in regoliths. On rocky asteroids, only about 20 percent of the grains was exposed to solar cosmic ray ions. Results based on present-day conditions in the asteroid belt agree well with irradiation features observed in gas-rich meteorites. An origin during epochs of early solar system evolution is not required.

    Description: The study of iron sulfide surface alternation reactions under Mars' surface ambient conditions begun during 1980 was extended through improved irradiation design and experimental protocols. A wider range of humidities and more intense irradiation were incorporated in the study. X-ray photoelectron spectra of irradiated chips suggest formation of FeSO4, FeCO3, and an iron oxide on the iron sulfide substrates studied.

    Description: Spectroscopic and photometric data for 23 faint-compact UV-excess galaxy candidates, found by Haro's three-color technique (1956), are presented. Eighteen were found to be emission-line galaxies (magnitudes between 14.4 and 17.9) with redshifts in the range of 1670 to 39,450 km/s; the remaining five appear to be stars. The apparent compactness of the galaxy images is a result of the finite resolution of the Survey plates. Faint Haro galaxies are not distinguishable from the original Haro galaxies in surface brightness or in their range of color and absolute magnitude. The Haro galaxies correspond to roughly two-thirds of Huchra's non-Seyfert Markarian galaxies (1977 a) which have the most negative (U-B) index; the new Haro galaxies have the same V magnitude growth with aperture, the same (B-V) aperture relation, and the same mean surface brightness as the Markarian galaxies.

    Description: For the planned flyby missions to Comet Halley in March 1986, the comet's ephemeris uncertainties completely dominate the spacecraft-comet miss distance. In an effort to determine realistic Comet Halley ephemeris uncertainties, a statistical covariance analysis was conducted using the actual data in 1909-1910-1911 and simulated data in 1984-1985-1986. In 1985-1986, Comet Halley's ephemeris uncertainties are very sensitive to the comet's orbital position, the optical data noise, data schedule, and whether or not the old data is included in the orbital solutions. The comet's ephemeris uncertainties in March 1986 are relatively insensitive to reasonable center of light/center of mass offsets and also to possible radar data taken in late November 1985. Accurate Space Telescope observations made in early March 1986 might significantly improve upon the comet's position uncertainties for the various intercepting spacecraft.

    Description: Intermediate results from theoretical models of the anomalous spikelike dust distribution observed in the tail of Comet Kohoutek using the Skylab white-light coronograph on December 28.996, 1973, are reported. The time evolution is studied using the model of Finson and Probstein (1968) and assuming power-law variation of the dust-production rate and the particle-size distribution.     Description: Using Hill's modified stability criterion, regions of orbital elements are established for conditions of stability. The model of the three-dimensional restricted problem of three bodies is used with the sun and Jupiter as the primaries. Four different cases are studied: direct and retrograde, outside and inside asteroidal orbits. The directions of the asteroidal orbits refer to the synodical reference frame and the positions refer to Jupiter's orbit. The orbital parameters of the asteroids are the semi-major axis (a), the eccentricity (e), and the inclination from Jupiter's orbital plane (i).     Description: A number of applications exist in astronomical research for planetary and lunar ephemerides covering an extended length of time. This paper discusses such a set of ephemerides, DE102/LE51, produced at JPL, covering the time 1411 B.C. to 3001 A.D. The ephemerides are dynamically self-consistent, in that the equations of motion were integrated simultaneously. They also represent the most accurately known positions covering such a time span. They have already been used by a number of different users in a variety of different applications.

    Description: The dynamical evolution of comets in the Oort cloud under the influence of stellar perturbations has been modeled using Monte Carlo techniques. It is shown that the cloud has been depleted over the history of the solar system. Comets are lost from the cloud by direct ejection due to close stellar encounters, diffusion of aphelia to distances beyond the sun's sphere of influence, or diffusion of perihelia into the planetary region where Jupiter and Saturn perturbations either eject them on hyperbolic trajectories or capture them to short-period orbits. The population of the cloud is estimated to be 1.0 - 1.5 x 10 to the 12th comets and the total mass is on the order of 1.9 earth masses. In addition to random passing stars, less frequent encounters with giant molecular clouds may play a significant role in randomizing the orbits of comets in the cloud and reducing the effective radius of the sun's sphere of influence.

    Description: A general form is derived for Opik's equations relating to the probability of collision between two orbiting objects to their orbital elements, and used to determine the collisional lifetime of the eight outer moons of Jupiter. The derivation is based on a concept of spatial density, or average number of objects found in a unit volume, and results in a set of equations that are easily applied to a variety of orbital collision problems. When applied to the outer satellites, which are all in irregular orbits, the equations predict a relatively long collisional lifetime for the four retrograde moons (about 270 billon years on the average) and a shorter time for the four posigrade moons (0.9 billion years). This short time is suggestive of a past collision history, and may account for the orbiting dust detected by Pioneers 10 and 11.

    Description: The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) is a 1-m class, high resolution solar telescope which NASA plans to operate on the Shuttle Spacelab during the mid and late 1980's. SOT will provide resolution down to 0.1 arcsec, and can therefore be used to solve many problems of solar atmosphere structure and dynamics. In particular, SOT should provide definite data on (1) the source of the sun's magnetic field, (2) the amount of power in waves generated in the photosphere, (3) the heating of the chromosphere, and (4) the local and global mass and energy balance in the solar transition region. The SOT Scientific Working Group will help plan, develop, and update the overall scientific plan for the SOT, as well as make recommendations with regard to the SOT project, instrumentation optimization, and scientific data management.

    Description: In situ chemical analyses of Martian soil by the Viking lander indicate mafic to ultramafic source rocks, consistent with both remote sensing data indicating the presence of pyroxene and olivine and with petrologic modeling which suggests that Martian lavas are iron-rich and ultramafic. Photogeological analysis of the Martian surface reveals two types of volcanic morphology: (1) central volcanoes, developed by continued and prolonged eruption from a point source vent; and (2) volcanic plains, recognized by mare ridges and flow lobes. When these volcanic morphologies are combined with relative age data, a volcanic history may be derived that is consistent with a moonlike thermal history involving a lithosphere of increasing thickness with time which gradually suppresses the volcanism.

    Description: The effects of turbulence in the focal region of spherical or weakly oblate refracting bodies on the evolute flashes associated with the crossing of the evolute of the planetary limb by an occulted spacecraft are investigated. The approximate theory of focal evolutes in oblate refractivity fields developed by Eshleman et al. (1979) is combined with a generalized weak scattering scintillation theory that includes the effect of focusing around a curved limb to obtain expressions for the scintillation index and power spectrum. Results are then applied to the radio observations of the crossing of the focal evolute of Jupiter by Voyager 1, in which no flash was detected, and to the effects of the solar coronal plasma on the gravitational lens of the sun.

    Description: Monochromatic photographs have established the NGC 6826 nebula as the third member of a group of very rare triple-shell planetaries (Feibelman, 1971, 1974). Kaler (1974) also characterized NGC 6826 as a giant halo planetary. Numerous errors and confusing statements regarding its size, structure and stratification are discussed, and the correct dimensions of the nebula are reported: the inner ring is 12.7 arcsec x 8.7 arcsec (Feibelman, 1971); the outer ring is 27 arcsec x 24 arcsec according to Curtis (1918), 25.7 arcsec x 24.4 arcsec according to Feibelman (1971), and 36 arcsec x 36 arcsec according to Coleman et al. (1975). The halo measurements range in diameter from 110 arcsec (Duncan, 1937) to 130 arcsec (Kaler, 1974) to 142 arcsec (Millikan, 1974). Values for the distance of NGC 6826 range from 0.75-1.16 kpc (Cahn and Kaler, 1971) to 2.265 kpc (Cudworth, 1974).

    Description: Spectra of Mars from 100 to 360 kaysers were obtained during three different observation periods from NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Also, a new thermal model was constructed for the surface of Mars, and synthetic spectra were computed from the models to compare with the observations. The models include the effects of a dusty atmosphere which absorbs, scatters, and reradiates energy. The synthetic spectra show significant effects on disk-averaged brightness temperatures, as well as absorption features due to silicate dust. The spectra of Mars, which are ratios of Mars to the moon, do not fit the synthetic spectra unless the surface emissivities of Mars and the moon have different dependencies on wavelength. A possible explanation for this behavior is a difference in soil particle-size distributions between Mars and the moon, with Mars being depleted in large particles compared to the moon. Small particles are consistent with clay minerals which have been suggested elsewhere as constituents of the Martian surface.

    Description: In contrast with the Tennant et al (1981) sample of over 30 active galactic nuclei, HEAO 1 A-2 high time resolution X-ray observations of the X-ray emitting Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 6814 show strong X-ray variability on time scales of less than 3 hr. On a time scale of 90 min, the mean flux varied by a factor of about 2.5, and a characteristic time for variability of 100 + 60 or - 25 sec is obtained by autocorrelation analysis. There is no indication of spectral variability with an upper limit on a change in the power law spectral index of less than about 0.37, for a factor 2 change in intensity. The constraints of such rapid variability on a range of X-ray source mechanisms is discussed.

    Description: The Einstein X-ray observatory imaging detectors have found X-ray emission associated with several components of the nearby radio galaxy Cen A = NGC 5128: (1) the compact nucleus; (2) an X-ray jet pointed toward the NE radio lobes; (3) the middle NE radio lobe; (4) the disk or dust lane; and (5) diffuse emission extending several arcmin around the nucleus. The intensity of the nucleus changed by a factor of seven over six months. The X-ray jet is considered in terms of thermal, inverse Compton, and synchrotron models. The emission of the NE radio lobe is greater than that expected from inverse Compton or synchrotron processes. Two ridges of emission are found along each edge of the dust lane, within several arcmin of the nucleus. The diffuse X-ray component has a luminosity which is too high to be due to bulge population X-ray sources, but which may be produced by main sequence stars under appropriate circumstances.

    Description: Plasma spectra from 12 orbits of the Pioneer-Venus Orbiter are reported which suggest the presence of ionospheric material in the magnetosheath plasma near and sunward of the terminator plane. Each spectrum shows a high E/q peak, consistent with O(+) moving at a speed lower than or comparable to that of the ambient magnetosheath plasma. It is pointed out that even though the data set is limited, the most intense heavy-ion fluxes clearly occur at altitudes less than a few thousand km. With the identification of the energetic component at O(+), the data reveal a trend for the speed of O(+) near the planet to be lower than the local magnetosheath speed, whereas the two speeds are comparable at altitudes above a few thousand km. These data, in combination with related observations that indicate O(+) moving at ambient speed in the distant wake, suggest that ionospheric material is swept up by the magnetosheath, accelerated to ambient speed within a few thousand km, and carried back through the wake region.

    Description: The geochemistry of the FeOOH polymorphs is an important consideration when evaluating the likelihood of an occurrence of detectable amounts of these minerals on Mars. An investigation is conducted regarding the stability of the FeOOH polymorphs geothite and lepidocrocite to dehydration in the presence of UV radiation. A thorough characterization of the FeOOH powders used in the laboratory experiments is presented, and the irradiational facility and experimental procedures are described. The results obtained in the conducted experiments are discussed. It is found that there is as yet no basis in laboratory experiments for inferring that perceptible UV photodehydration of FeOOH polymorphs will occur naturally on the surface of Mars on a time scale of at least 10-100 years.

The observations show features that are not in detailed agreeement with previous identifications of methane or methane frost, although the general spectral behavior leading to such identifications has been confirmed. It is believed that a combination of surface and atmospheric absorptions may resolve some discrepancies; for instance, many hydrated minerals and frosts which are dark between 3.0 and 4.0 microns may combine with a carbon monoxide atmosphere to yield the data in question.

    Description: Predominantly carbonaceous HF/HCl-resistant residues from the Allende meteorite are studied. Samples are characterized by SEM/EDXA, X-ray diffraction, INAA, C, S, H, N, and noble gas analyses. Isotopic data for carbon show variations no greater than 5%, while isotopic data from noble gases confirm previously established systematics. Noble gas abundances correlate with those of C and N, and concomitant partial loss of C and normal trapped gas occur during treatments with oxidizing acids. HF/HCl demineralization of bulk meteorite results in similar fractional losses of C and trapped noble gases, which leads to the conclusion that various macromolecular carbonaceous substances serve as the main host phase for normal trapped noble gases and anomalous gases in acid-resistant residues, and as the carrier of the major part of trapped noble gases lost during HF/HCl demineralization. Limits on the possible abundances of dense mineralic host phases in the residues are obtained, and considerations of the nucleogenetic origin for CCF-XE indicate that carbonaceous host phases and various forms of organic matter in carbonaceous meteorites may have a presolar origin.

    Description: Evidence of climatic changes on Mars and the earth due to geologic and astronomical variations is discussed. Finely striped ice-free bands in the Martian polar caps have been taken to indicate that long term variations in the orbit and axial tilt of Mars have precipitated these features at the rate of a mm/yr. Photogrammetric and photometric methods have contributed to measurements of the composition and depth of the Martian caps (14-46 m), and observations of higher solar energy absorption in the northern ice cap implies greater dust deposition in that region than on the south cap; however, the transport mechanisms are not well understood. Comparisons of earth and Martian climatic variations data are made, noting a lack of information on the age intervals of marine and nonmarine sediments on the earth. The possibilities of using quantitative data other than layer thickness to constrain climate models are discussed, and the slope or albedo of layers, or the spacing of polar undulations are suggested.

    Description: Saturn electrostatic discharges (SED) monitored by the Voyager 1 were investigated to determine the source of the phenomena. Consideration has been given to two sources: the atmosphere at equatorial latitudes, where the cloud-top wind velocities correspond to the Saturn 10 hr 10 min rotation period; and the rings at 1.8 Saturn radius. The data were analyzed in terms of time and frequency, revealing a time-varying frequency, few detectable discharges outside of a low threshold, and the appearances and disappearances of the SED with no correlation with frequency. The periodicity of the SED episodes indicated that the source was occulted between revolutions, which ruled out the ring source. The SED signals were only detected on the dayside, suggesting the signals propagated through the dayside ionosphere. Diurnal variations in the ion densities could prohibit the signals from escaping on the nightside, a factor supported by detection of low frequency SED only during close passage of the Voyager. Ray tracing experiments have demonstrated that storm sources have emissions observable with the storm on the limb at the observed 30-40 MHz interval.

    Description: When seen at frost cap minimum, Martian north polar erg dunes north of 80 deg N record east winds, while those south of that latitude record west winds. Many of the transverse dunes are considered to be reversing dunes, and dunes in the two fields may have reversed at least once during the lifetime of the Viking Orbiters. It is proposed that the average polar winds are strong, off-pole northwest winds in the fall, moderate west winds in winter, latitude-dependent weak-to-strong off-pole northeast winds in spring, and weak west winds in summer, as has been largely confirmed by Viking images of near polar clouds. Over millenia, the combination of reversing west and east winds could produce the biomodal distributions of dune orientations observed at the north pole.

    Description: Michels et al. (1982) observed the apparent impacting of the sun by a comet, and Sekanina (1982) showed that the comet, 1979XI, was probably a member of the Kreutz group of sun-grazing comets, although its perihelion of 0.35 solar radii was much smaller than the 1.2-1.9 solar radii common for this comet class. The perihelion change cannot be explained by planetary, stellar, or nongravitational perturbations. The most plausible explanation is collision with another body, probably a comet, at large heliocentric distance. The probability of such an event is, however, extremely small. The sublimation of the comet's nucleus before impact is discussed, and it is suggested that its ultimate destruction probably resulted from the shock of entry into the denser regions of the solar atmosphere, just above the photosphere.

    Description: In the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere of Jupiter, translationally hot H atoms are produced in the photolysis of ammonia, phospine, and acetylene which react with methane to form methyl radicals. The latter combine with NH2 to form methylamine. It is presently shown that the combined production of methylamine and subsequent photolysis to HCN is unlikely to account for the HCN observed near Jupiter's tropopause. The recommendation of NH2 and C2H3 radicals to yield C2H5N, followed by photolysis to HCN, is the preferred path. An upper limit column density on CH3PH2 is estimated to be about 10 to the 13th/sq cm, as compared to 10 to the 15th/sq cm for CH3NH2.

This model successfully reproduces the existing center-to-limb observations, although higher spatial resolution observations are needed for a definitive test. The model also predicts total fluxes which are close to the observed values. The strength of the emission is predicted to be closely related to the instantaneous near-IR solar heating rate.

    Description: Observations of the total flux and center to limb dependence of the nonthermal emission occurring in the cores of the 9.4 and 10.4 micrometers CO2 bands on Mars are compared to a theoretical model based on this mechanism. The model successfully reproduces the observed center to limb dependence of this emission, to within the limits imposed by the spatial resolution of the observations of Mars and Venus. The observed flux from Mars agrees closely with the prediction of the model; the flux observed from Venus is 74 percent of the flux predicted by the model. This emission is used to obtain the kinetic temperatures of the Martian and Venusian mesospheres. For Mars near 70 km altitude, a rotational temperature analysis using five lines gives T = 135 + or - 20 K. The frequency width of the emission is also analyzed to derive a temperature of 126 + or - 6 K. In the case of the Venusian mesosphere near 109 km, the frequency width of the emission gives T = 204 + or - 10 K.

    Description: Seven chips of primarily matrix material from the Antarctic meteorite ALHA 81005 were analyzed by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and magnetic hysteresis techniques. The FMR spectra of two chips have a resonance at g of about 2.1 that resembles the g of about 2.1 resonance that is characteristic of lunar soils. Thus the FMR spectra are consistent with the lunar regolith being a progenitor for the matrix material. For the two chips, the FMR surface exposure (maturity) index was about 5 units, which is equivalent to a value for an immature lunar soil. The total concentration of metallic iron is on the order of 0.11 equivalent wt. pct, which is within the observed range for Apollo 16 rocks and soils.

    Description: The isotopic abundances of the noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) are reported for Antarctic ALHA 81005. It contains solar wind-implanted gases whose absolute and relative concentrations are quite similar to lunar regolith samples but not to other meteorites. ALHA 81005 also contains a large excess Ar-40 component which is identical to the component in lunar fines implanted from the lunar atmosphere. Large concentrations of cosmogenic Ne-21, Kr-82, and Xe-126 in ALHA 81005 indicate a total cosmic ray exposure age of at least 200 million years. The noble gas data alone are strong evidence for a lunar origin of this meteorite.

    Description: One series of data comprising the present J, H, K broadband IR photometry of the cataclysmic binary system U Geminorum over the course of two orbital cycles was obtained several days before an outburst, while a second was gathered when the system had almost completely returned to quiescence from that outburst. In quiescence, the M4-M5.5 red dwarf star supplies most of the IR luminosity of the system, while the light curves at this time are tidally induced ellipsoidal variations of the red dwarf which exhibit an amplitude such that the red dwarf must fill, or nearly fill, its Roche lobe. This shows directly that Roche lobe overflow is important in cataclysmic variable stars. The range of the disk IR colors after outbursts suggest that cool and optically thick gas, together with optically thin gas, supply most of the IR light of the disk.

    Description: It is suggested that existing data on the 1908 Tunguska fall precludes an interpretation of the object as an either active or extinct comet fragment. Because a fireball of the Tunguska mass is not efficiently decelerated by the earth's atmosphere, it would at an entry velocity of about 30 km/sec have had to resist aerodynamic pressures greater than one billon dyn/sq cm before disintegrating. The inherently extremely fragile cometary material could not have survived a load of this magnitude. The data on Type II fireballs with prominent terminal flares are extrapolated, to estimate Tunguska's critical dynamic pressure at the same time of explosion as being of the order of 200 million dyn/sq cm, and its preexplosion velocity as about 10 km/sec, thereby ruling out a comet-like orbit. The Tunguska object is most consistently described as a small Apollo-type asteroid, 90-190 m across.

    Description: Numerical experiments designed for the elucidation of the conditions under which self-gravitating, three-body systems become dynamically unstable are examined of the cases of four orbital configuration types: circular, prograde, and coplanar; circular, retrograde, and coplanar; circular, direct, and inclined; and eccentric, direct, and coplanar. Results indicate that orbital inclination does not significantly affect stability in 'outer planet' configurations, while the stability of 'inner planet' configurations, where the tertiary is in close orbit about one member of the binary, is markedly less affected, once the relative orbital inclination is greater than 50 deg. It is found that the onset of dynamical instability is only weakly dependent on the eccentricity of either the binary or tertiary orbit, as long as the mass of the tertiary is comparable to the reduced mass of the binary.

    Description: During the interval from about May through August 1981, when Voyager 2 was inbound to Saturn, the Planetary Radio Astronomy instrument measured repeated, dramatic decreases in the intensity of the Saturn Kilometric Radiation (SKR). The emission dropouts averaged two orders of magnitude below mean energy levels and varied from about 1 to 10 Saturn rotations in duration. Comparison with pre-Saturn encounter Voyager 1 observations (June to November, 1980) shows that the SKR dropouts were unique to the Voyager 2 observing interval, consistent with the closer proximity of Saturn to Jupiter's distant magnetotail in 1981. Further, the dropouts occurred on the average at times when Voyager 2 is known to have been within or near Jupiter's magnetic tail.

    Description: A quasi-linear diagnostic model using observed solar-related temperatures and a specified solar mean circulation and surface structure to find the solar-related circulation above the clouds of Venus is presented. Despite the greater dependence of model-derived, solar-related circulation on the mean flow than is the case for terrestrial tides, as well as the uncertainty concerning this mean flow, significant conclusions are drawn for the solar-related circulation and thermal structure of Venus. An anomalously large response is found in the polar regions, due to the model's requirement of a process such as dissipation which will act as a major sink for momentum. Dissipation is specified in the model as Rayleigh friction with an unknown free parameter coefficient. In view of this, dissipation is either very efficient by terrestrial standards and accompanied by small solar-related circulation, or similar to that of earth and possessed of a circulation large enough to have an impact on the mean circulation.

    Description: It is pointed out that the 1960's were the turning point for the generation of lunar and planetary ephemerides. All previous measurements of the positions of solar system bodies were optical angular measurements. New technological improvements leading to immense changes in observational accuracy are related to developments concerning radar, Viking landers on Mars, and laser ranges to lunar corner cube retroreflectors. Suitable numerical integration techniques and more comprehensive physical models were developed to match the accuracy of the modern data types. The present investigation is concerned with the first integrated ephemeris, DE 102, which covers the entire span of the historical astronomical observations of usable accuracy which are known. The fit is made to modern data. The integration spans the time period from 1411 BC to 3002 AD.

    Description: Radial intensity scans of a Voyager 2 high phase angle image of Titan have been inverted to yield vertical extinction profiles at 1 deg intervals around the limb. A detached haze layer with peak particle number densities of about 0.2 cu/cm exists at all latitudes south of about 45 N, and at an altitude of 300-350 km. The optical depth 0.01 level lies at a radius of 2932 + or - 5 km at the equator and at a radius of 2915 + or - 10 km over the poles (altitudes of 357 + or - 5 and 340 + or - 10 km, respectively). In addition to the haze layer at 300-350 km, there is a small enhancement in the extinction at about 450 km which exists at all latitudes between 75 deg S and about 60 deg N.

    Description: Voyager imaging, infrared, and radio observations for Saturn have been recently interpreted by Smith et al. (1982) as an indication that the jet streams observed at the cloud tops extend to depths greater than the 10,000-bar level. This analysis assumes a maximum latitudinal temperature contrast of a few percent, a mean atmospheric rotation rate at depth given by Saturn's ratio period, and no variation with latitude of the bottom pressure level for the zonal flow system. These assumptions are not, however, firmly constrained by observation. The diagnostic analysis of plausible alternative configurations for Saturn's atmospheric structure demonstrates that a thin weather layer system (confined at mid to high latitudes to levels above 200 bar) cannot be excluded by any of the available observations. A quantitative estimate of the effects of moisture condensation (including the differentiation of mean molecular weight) suggests that these might provide the buoyancy contrasts necessary to support a thin-layer flow provided that Saturn's outer envelope is enriched approximately 10 times in water abundance relative to a solar composition atmosphere and strongly differentiated with latitude at the condensation level.

    Description: The equatorial atmosphere of Titan was probed by means of two coherently related radio signals transmitted from Voyager 1 at 13.0 and 3.6 cm wavelengths during the November 12, 1980 occultation of the spacecraft by the Saturn satellite. An analysis of the differential dispersive frequency measurements did not reveal any ionization layers in the upper atmosphere of Titan. The gas refractivity data, which extend from the surface to about 200 km altitude, were interpreted in two different ways. In the first, it is assumed that N2 makes up virtually all of the atmosphere, with small amounts of CH4 and other hydrocarbons present. In the second interpretation of the refractivity data, it is assumed that the 3.5 km altitude level corresponds to the bottom of a CH4 cloud layer and that N2 and CH4 were perfectly mixed below this level.

    Description: A discussion is presented on the gravitational interaction between ring systems and nearby satellites. A shepherd satellite lacking damping mechanisms will force oscillations in the motion of a ring particle that are symmetrical with respect to the encounter geometry. If such damping mechanisms as density wave propagation or a dissipative medium are present, a lag in particle response provides the asymmetry that exerts a net torque on the rings. While the torque on a given particle depends on the degree of damping, that dependence disappears when the torque is averaged over a range of orbits spanning resonances if the degree of damping is within a certain range. A torque that is much lower than the standard formula results from excessively weak or strong damping.

    Description: Jovian coordinate systems are different from those employed in the case of the earth. Latitude and longitude coordinates are usually established relative to some solid surface. Because Jupiter does not have a solid surface (at least none which is visible through the clouds), arbitrary, but convenient, coordinate grids have been prescribed. A spin equator is made out from observations of cloud motion, and the direction of the planetary spin axis is, therefore, determined with relatively good accuracy. The problem in establishing a Jupiter longitude system is that the mean rotation period of the clouds is a function of latitude. The solution selected was to define two separate longitude grids. A third longitude system became necessary with the detection of radio signals which gave evidence for a rotating planetary magnetic field. Attention is also given to orbital phase angle and longitude conventions for satellites, and two latitude systems for Jupiter

    Description: It is pointed out that the magnetosphere of Jupiter is in many respects quite different from that of the earth. The energy required to drive the Jovian magnetosphere is apparently extracted from Jupiter's rotational energy rather than from the solar wind. Jupiter is a strong source of energetic charged particles which can be detected as far away as the orbit of Mercury. The structure and dynamics of the energetic particle distribution in the inner magnetosphere is discussed, taking into account observations, transport and losses in the inner magnetosphere, satellite interactions, and electron synchrotron radiation. The subsolar hemisphere is considered, giving attention to particle fluxes in the subsolar magnetosphere, conditions in the middle magnetosphere, and the characteristics of the outer magnetosphere. A description of the predawn magnetosphere is also provided.

    Description: The original interest in an ionosphere on Jupiter was generated by the discovery of strong radio-frequency emissions at approximately 20 MHz which were thought to be plasma frequencies associated with Jupiter's ionosphere. The ionosphere of Jupiter provides a means to couple the magnetosphere to the atmosphere by virtue of its high conductivity and collisional interaction with the neutral atmosphere. The Pioneer and Voyager have provided direct measurements of profiles of electron concentration at selected locations on Jupiter. Attention is given to basic principles regarding the characteristics of the Jovian ionosphere, the ionization sources, aspects of ion recombination, ion chemistry, observations of Jupiter's ionosphere, the structure of Jupiter's upper atmosphere, and questions of ionospheric modeling. On the basis of the Pioneer and Voyager observations it appears that Jupiter's ionosphere and thermosphere undergo significant solar cycle changes.

    Description: Four distinct types of particles are suggested to be present in the upper atmosphere of Venus. The lowest and densest haze may consist of a submicron sulfuric acid aerosol which extends above the cloud tops, up to about 80 km, representing an extension of the upper cloud deck. Temperature structure measurements in the 70-120 km altitude range indicate the occasional appearance of two independent water ice layers, of which the lower may form between 80 and 100 km and is probably the detached haze layer noted in high contrast limb photography. A nucleation of this ice layer on sulfuric acid aerosols is hypothesized. Temperatures of the Venus mesopause, near 120 km altitude, are frequently cold enough to allow ice nucleation on meteoric dust or ambient ions, yielding a haze (analogous to noctilucent clouds on earth) which is expected to be tenuous to the point of optical invisibility.

    Description: The phosphine photochemistry on Saturn is studied with a 1D photochemical model. The PH3 concentration is rapidly depleted with height (scale height 3.5 km) in the upper troposphere. Formation of P, a probable precursor of P4, (a potential red chromophore in the atmosphere), is highly improbable unless the rate constant for the recombination reaction PH + H2 + M yields PH3 + M is less than 10 to the -41st cm exp 6/molecule-squared sec. Coupling of PH3 and hydrocarbon photochemistry, specifically the C2H2 catalyzed photodissociation of CH, is important. Column production rates of the organophosphorus compounds CH3PH2 and HCP of 3 x 10 to the 8th/sq cm sec are predicted, with potentially observable column densities of greater than 1 x 10 to the 17th/sq cm.

    Description: The sharp, 90-km wide transition from an optical depth of 0.2 in the C ring to 1 in the B ring begins at 91,970 km from Saturn's center. This radius is found to be almost exactly at the inward stability limit of charged particles launched in the ring plane at the local Kepler velocity, provided these particles have large charge to mass ratio. The zonal harmonic models of Saturn's magnetic field from the Voyager data and the gravitational field model from Pioneer data are essential to get the very close agreement between theory and observation. The theoretical stability limits are 91,973 + or - 145 km from Voyager 1 magnetic field data and 91,991 + or 145 km from Voyager 2 magnetic data. The zonal harmonic magnetic field lines are not perpendicular to the ring plane. Therefore, in addition to the magnetic mirror, gravitational, and centrifugal forces, an unknown force must be postulated to produce equilibrium in the ring plane and make the stability calculation meaningful.

    Description: Significant abundances of trapped argon, krypton, and xenon have been measured in shock-altered phases of the achondritic meteorite Elephant Moraine 79001 from Antarctica. The relative elemental abundances, the high ratios of argon-40 to argon-36 (equal to or greater than 2000), and the high ratios of xenon-129 to xenon-132 (equal to or greater than 2.0) of the trapped gas more closely resemble Viking data for the Martian atmosphere than data for noble gas components typically found in meteorites. These findings support earlier suggestions, made on the basis of geochemical evidence, that shergottites and related rare meteorites may have originated from the planet Mars.

    Description: The role of adsorbed SO2 on Io's surface particles in producing the observed spectral absorption band near 4 microns in Io's reflectance spectrum is explored. Calculations show that a modest 50 percent monolayer coating of adsorbed So2 molecules on submicron grains of sulfur or alkali sulfide, assumed to make up Io's uppermost optical surface ('radialith'), will result in a nu 1 + nu 3 absorption band near 4 microns with depth about 30 percent below the adjacent continuum, consistent with the observed strength of the Io band. The precise wavelength position of the nu 1 + nu 3 band of SO2 in different phase states such as frost, ice, adsorbate, and gas are summarized from the experimental literature and compared with the available telescopic measurements of the Io band position. The results suggest that the 4-micron band in Io's full disk spectrum can best be explained by the presence on Io's surface of widespread SO2 in the form of adsorbate rather than ice or frost.

    Description: HCN formation in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere of Jupiter is presently modeled in terms of UV pyrolysis of the C2H5N isomer aziridine, which is a product of the NH2 and C2H3 radicals that originate from ammonia photolysis and the addition of H atoms to acetylene, respectively. The sensitivity of the HCN column density to the individual rate constants and the eddy diffusion coefficient profile is considered, along with the possibility that additional HCN-yielding pathways may exist. Both ammonia and phosphine are strongly depleted by photolysis.

    Description: It is speculated that the periodic absorption and desorption of CO2 by the soil of Venus may buffer daily temperature, pressure and wind variations in the lower atmosphere, effectively eliminating the net tidal torque on the atmosphere. The redistribution of mass would still generate a sizable torque, however, which may serve as a balance for that which is caused by the gravitationally induced tide. This novel tidal mechanism represents a somewhat weaker competitor to the atmospheric tides which have previously been studied.

    Description: Singular, nonlinear, and Liapunov unstable equations are made regular and linear through transformations that change the perturbed planar problem of two bodies into unperturbed and undamped harmonic oscillators with constant coefficients, so that the stable solution may be immediately written in terms of the new variables. The use of arbitrary and special functions for the transformations allows the systematic discussion of previously introduced and novel anomalies. For the case of the unperturbed two-body problem, it is proved that if transformations are power functions of the radial variable, only the eccentric and the true anomalies (with the corresponding transformations of the radial variable) will result in harmonic oscillators. The present method significantly reduces computation requirements in autonomous space operations.

    Description: New orbital elements for the giant primary components of 105 Herculis and Pi Cephei A are derived using radial velocities from Dominion Astrophysical Observatory coude plates. These data are combined with those of Harper (1925) in order to estimate the velocity amplitude of Pi Cephei A in the visual orbit of this triple system. Two models of this system are developed. In the first model, the unseen spectroscopic secondary component is a single main-sequence star, although this seems unlikely, while in the alternative model the unseen secondary component is itself double.

    Description: The complex region of Jupiter's radio emissions at decameter wavelengths, the so-called DAM, is considered, taking into account the basic theoretical ideas which underly both the older and newer theories and models. Linear theories are examined, giving attention to direct emission mechanisms, parallel propagation, perpendicular propagation, and indirect emission mechanisms. An investigation of nonlinear theories is also conducted. Three-wave interactions are discussed along with decay instabilities, and three-wave up-conversio. Aspects of the Io and plasma torus interaction are studied, and a mechanism by which Io can accelerate electrons is reviewed.

    Description: Among the planets of the solar system, Jupiter is unique in connection with its size and its large magnetic moment, second only to the sun's. The Jovian magnetic field was first detected indirectly by radio astronomers who postulated its existence to explain observations of nonthermal radio emissions from Jupiter at decimetric and decametric wavelengths. Since the early radio astronomical studies of the Jovian magnetosphere, four spacecraft have flown by the planet at close distances and have provided in situ information about the geometry of the magnetic field and its strength. The Jovian magnetosphere is described in terms of three principal regions. The inner magnetosphere is the region where the magnetic field created by sources internal to the planet dominates. The region in which the equatorial currents flow is denoted as the middle magnetosphere. In the outer magnetosphere, the field has a large southward component and exhibits large temporal and/or spatial variations in magnitude and direction in response to changes in solar wind pressure.

    Description: Spectra of lunar sites obtained in June 1983 have been analyzed for residual luminescence using the spectral line depth technique. The results or three sites each at three wavelengths are presented. The sites observed were Mare Crisium, Kepler, and Aristarchus. In each case, the value quoted was based not only on the strong Fraunhofer line in the spectral range covered but also on from 11 to 21 weaker lines within 80 A of the strongest feature. These data do not support previous observations. The values given do not indicate a greatly reddened spectrum, and the luminescence spectrum of the mare site is not significantly different from the two young crater sites. These observations cannot be adequately explained by thermal luminescence, theories of direct excitation are also unable to explain the strength of the flux.

    Description: Approximately 46% of the lunar sample (10084,151), 125.42 mg, was solubilized in 680 ml 0.01 M salicylic acid. Atomic absorption spectroscopic analysis of the solubilized lunar sample showed the following amount of metal ions: Ca, 3.1; Mg, 4.0; K, 0.09; Na, 0.67; Fe, 7.3; Mn, 1.6; Cu, Ni, Cr, less than 0.1 each. All are in ppm. Salicylic acid used to solubilize the lunar sample was highly inhibitory to the growth of mixed soil microbes. However, the mineral part of the lunar extract stimulated the growth. For optimal growth of the soil microbes the following nutrients must be added to the moon extract; sources of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and magnesium in addition to water.

    Description: A high resolution observation of the active nucleus galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) was made by the GSFC low energy gamma-ray spectrometer (LEGS) during a balloon flight on 1981 November 19. The measured spectrum between 70 and 500 keV is well represented by a power law of the form 1.05 x 10 (-4) (E/100 keV) (-1.59) ph/sq cm /s with no breaks or line features observed. The 98% confidence (2 sigma) flux upper limit for a narrow ( 3 keV) 511-keV positron annihilation line is 9.9 x 10 (-4) ph/ sq cm /s. Using this upper limit, the ratio of the narrow-line annihilation radiation luminosity to the integral or = 511 keV luminosity is estimated to be 0.09 (2 sigma upper limit). This is compared with the measured value for our galactic center in the Fall of 1979 of 0.10 to 0.13, indicating a difference in he emission regions in the nuclei of the two galaxies.

    Description: This star, classified F8 IIe + B:, has a very unusual ultraviolet spectrum, with abnormally strong and numerous absorption features in the far-UV and exceptionally strong Mg II emission. There is some resemblance to shell and pre-main-sequence B stars, but it more closely matches the strange spectra of the eclipsing systems VV Cep and SX Cas, and it probably has considerable circumstellar material at fairly high temperature. HD 207739 is probably an interacting binary and needs to be monitored for light and velocity variations.

    Description: Direct measurements of neutral CO2, O, CO, N2, He, and N densities from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter Neutral Mass Spectrometer are described in terms of a spherical harmonic representation (latitude and local time coordinates) of exospheric temperature and number densities at 150 km, using modified Bates temperature profiles. The exospheric temperatures are determined from the altitude variations of atomic oxygen. A global average temperature of 228 K is derived with a first harmonic variation of 5%. The altitude profiles are extended downward to 100 km by using empirical formulas to provide a transition through the turbopause region (simulating the effect of eddy diffusion and vertical flows) and matching entry probe density data. The model reflects the observed variations of temperature and density with the 10.7 cm radio flux index. For a given change in flux at the planet, the exospheric temperature on Venus changes by only 10% of the change seen in the terrestrial thermosphere.

    Description: The unidentified infrared emission at a wavelength of 3.28 microns has been mapped in a 5 x 5 arcmin region of the Orion Nebula at a resolution of 30 arcsec along with continuum thermal emission at 3.5 microns in order to gain information on the probable source of the unidentified feature. The 3.28-micron emission is found to be extended over much of the nebula with a distribution very different from that of the 3.5-micron continuum. The ratio of 3.28-micron to 3.5-micron flux density is observed to range from a value of 7 in the Orion ionization ridge to less than 0.15 towards the Becklin-Neugebauer object, and to generally be larger toward the edges of the emitting region than toward the Trapezium. From the observations, it is concluded that the 3.28-micron emission originates in the ionization front between the foreground ionized gas and background molecular cloud, and may be due to thermal emission from complex, less volatile organic substances in grain mantles.

    Description: The dayside ion concentrations in the Venus ionosphere obtained by the Pioneer Venus orbiter ion mass spectrometer exhibit a modulation corresponding to the 27-day solar variation. Comparisons were made of the amplitudes of modulation of CO(2(+), C(+), and O2(+), with the amplitudes of the 27-day variation in the 10.7-cm solar radio flux and the simultaneously measured EUV fluxes at He II (304 A) and Lyman-beta(1026 A), together with a theoretical analysis of the effects of solar variability on the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere of Venus. This analysis leads to the conclusion that the observed modulation of dayside ion densities is primarily due to the variability in the ionizing EUV radiations and, to a much lesser extent, the result of the variability with solar activity of the neutral atmosphere via the variability in exospheric temperature. In this connection, it is also shown theoretically why the percentage variation of exospheric temperature on Venus (as observed in the ONMS data) for a given variation in the 10.7-cm radio flux is only half of the exospheric temperature variation for earth.

    Description: Spacecraft radio occultation measurements imply the presence of a nonuniformly mixed gaseous absorber within, but mostly below, the main cloud layer of sulfuric acid-water droplets measured by Pioneer-Venus. Preliminary considerations of the amount, distribution, and effects of sulfur dioxide and other gases, which apparently are associated with and produce the cloud, indicate that they constitute an important, and probably the predominant, source of the observed microwave opacity of the middle atmosphere of Venus.

    Description: Observations of ablation markings on tektite surfaces reveal that a large variation in aerodynamic heating must have occurred among the members of a swarm during atmospheric entry. In a few cases, the existence of jagged features indicates that these tektite surfaces may have barely reached the melting temperature. Such an observation seems to be incompatible with the necessarily large heating rates suffered by other tektites which exhibit the ring wave melt flow. A reconciliation is proposed in the form of a wake shielding model which is a natural consequence of swarm entry. Calculations indicate that the observed ablation variations are actually possible for swarm entry at greater than escape velocity. This aerodynamic conclusion provides support for the arguments favoring extraterrestrial origin of tektites.

    Description: As gamma-ray astronomy moves from the discovery to the exploratory phase, the promise of gamma-ray astrophysics noted by theorists in the late 1940s and 1950s is beginning to be realized. In the future, satellites should carry instruments that will have over an order of magnitude greater sensitivity than those flown thus far, and, for at least some portions of the gamma-ray energy range, these detectors will also have substantially improved energy and angular resolution. The information to be obtained from these experiments should greatly enhance our knowledge of several astrophysical phenomena including the very energetic and nuclear processes associated with compact objects, astrophysical nucleosynthesis, solar particle acceleration, the chemical composition of the planets and other bodies of the solar system, the structure of our galaxy, the origin and dynamic pressure effects of the cosmic rays, high energy particles and energetic processes in other galaxies especially active ones, and the degree of matter-antimatter symmetry of the universe. The gamma-ray results of the forthcoming programs such as Gamma-I, the Gamma Ray Observatory, the gamma-ray burst network, Solar Polar, and very high energy gamma-ray telescopes on the ground will almost certainly provide justification for more sophisticated telescopes. These advanced instruments might be placed on the Space Platform currently under study by N.A.S.A.
