    Notes: Much of the information accumulated on the fire resistance of ‘dividing’ elements can be utilized in the design of buildings for fire safety, if the fire tolerance values are converted into fire resistance. Three methods of conversion, one based on the concept of equal temperature-time areas, the second on the concept of equal maximum temperatures, and the third, Law method, are critically examined and handy conversion tools presented. In the case of the ‘key’ elements of buildings, basing the fire safety design on fire resistance information is not recommended.

    Notes: Owing to their low cost phosphorus fire-retardants find vast application in making fire-retardant cellulosic compostions. They have been used both as a physical additive as well as part of the polymer structure. Acid forming phosphorus compounds are generally effective in cotton and other cellulosic. Acidic retardants produce char via a dehydration process and this brings about the final fire-retardancy in phosphate-containing composition. High efficiency of phosphorus fire retardants in polyurethane foam has also been suggested to be the result of stable char formation. The char affects the flammability in the three following ways: reduction of flammable fuel, insulation by the char and coating by the non-volatile thermally stable phosphorous acids which screen the hot carbon from the oxygen. Nitrogen-phosphorus synergism in cellulose in controversial and evidence indicates that it is non existent in polymers.

    Notes: In recent year, increased attention, linked to the use of new structural design criteria and materials, has been given to maintaining the integrity of buildings and structures exposed to fire. Structures are now designed using lighter structural shapes and consequently differ from earlier, more traditional buildings, in terms of their resistance to the effects of the high temperature of fire. Contemporary structures are less expensive. Advance in building construction technology also result in faster erection.

    Notes: The theromo-oxidative decomposition, flash ignition and burning of high-impact polystyrene containing the flame-retardant system decabromodiphenyl oxide + antimony trioxide was investigated using the Setchkin apparatus combined with mass spectrometry. The time dependences of the release rate of the main products into the gas phase during decomposition and burning showed that the flame-retardants markedly influence these processes. It was found that the retardants used exhibit an acceleration of the polymer degradation and that the efficiency of inhibition in the gas phase depends on the atomic ratio antimony: bromine.

    Notes: Estimates of the errors in light extinction measurements of smoke resulting from forward scattered light entering the detector and from the spectral width of the light source are presented.     Notes: The development, construction, and testing of a gas-fired radiant heat source for use as part of a fire test method is described. The unit has been shown capable of operation over extended periods at surface temperatures yielding radiance corresponding to that of a black body at 935 °C. This permits a 60% increase of specimen irradiance over that possible with a burner previously used, without modifying the specimen-burner configuration factor. One such application of this burner allows operation with specimen irradiance levels at 5 W cm-2 or for short periods at levels approaching 7 W cm-2 at higher temperatures. This performance is achieved while maintaining effective spatial separation between specimen and heat source. This assists in avoiding imposition of vitiated air near the surface of a burning specimen. Some performance data are provided on its behavior when supplied with natural gas. The unit can burn propane but only with a significant reduction of thermal output.

    Notes: In making fire safety decisions the designer often finds that some input variables concerning his problems are chance variables. As detailed statistical data are rarely available the designer must rely largely on his expert judgment. With the application of the Delphi method such decisions can be optimized and formalized.     Notes: A study of the 1979 UK fire statistics and the Annual Report of the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys shows that only 1 death per 1000 is attributable to toxic gases from combustion. However, of the ‘deaths by violence’ it rises to 30 (3%). As 37% of all fires in occupied buildings were confined to the first item ignited and 53% to the area of origin it is postulated that such fires (and the consequent deaths) largely concerned substances which will burn on their own. From experience these are largely materials with limiting oxygen indices below 22 or 22-28 for restricted burning only. Those with limiting oxygen indices 〉28 cannot on their own sustain combustion. These considerations suggest the mode in which toxic gas tests should be conducted, i.e., horizontally or vertically and vertically only for the first two groups, respectively, and in the presence of a fire sustainer for the limiting oxygen index 〉28 group. Wood in the form of a wooden crib is suggested as suitable. To this end some experiments are described with PVC placed on top of a No. 5 crib (PSA). These latter show that, making the best assumption possible from the existing data, the wood contributes about 63% to the toxicity and the PVC 37%. On the large scale, other work has shown that wooden cribs alone will give lethal concentrations of carbon monoxide for significant periods. Thus difficult-to-burn substances need to evolve gases of exceptional toxicity for their contribution to be worth considering.

    Notes: NBS burned eleven mattresses made up with bedding in two different rooms, typical of a residential bedroom and a nursing home patient room, respectively. Seven of the mattresses flamed and burned vigorously, the other four were of a construction or so heavily flame-inhibited that they only smoldered. The burning behavior of the seven that flamed was modeled with the Harvard Mark V fire simulation. The experimental burn behavior for tests conducted in one room was well reproduced using only total weight of combustible, surface area and heat of combustion. Smoke production values were found to have little effect on the predicted behavior except for the smoke production itself. Fires in a second room, whose ventilation was intentionally restricted by the configuration of the adjoining space, could not be as well reproduced by the present, single-room fire model. During this study several changes were made to the simulation. The most significant change was the inclusion of mixing of the hot exiting fire gases with the cold incoming air. As a part of this, the inter-layer radiation exchange was reformulated to include the effect of smoke contamination of the lower layer. The reformulation of the radiation model has a marked effect on the predicted upper layer gas temperatures, generally improving the quality of the simulation.

    Notes: Melamine orthophosphate crystals vary in shape and formula according to their method of production. The types vary widely in their behaviour when incorporated into an epoxy resin intumescent coating for trials in a small scale fire test. Heat treatment of melamine phosphate crystals at 210 °C, a process designed to reduce their solubility, profoundly affects the performance of any crystal type in a fire test. In such cases crystal shape alone appears to determine performance, whereas the shape, formula, and state of agglomeration affect performance in coatings produced with untreated melamine phosphate. Small plates of side 20 μm heat treated at 210 °C, are the preferred type for optimum performance and weathering characteristics.

    Notes: A fire test device suitable for small-scale, comparative testing as a first step in investigating the performance of fire retardant materials is described. The procedure developed is not intended to predict the performance of a given material in a real fire, since the local conditions can be extremely variable. However, the parameters in the device can be varied over a wide range to screen the performance of various materials in given situation. Typical results for an intumescent mastic consisting of epoxy resin, hardener and melamine phosphate are quoted, together with appropriate calibration curves. A method of estimating the thermal resistance of the developing char is also discussed.

    Notes: A study has been made of the effect of antimony and molybdenum oxides on the temperature-critical oxygen index relationship of halogenated polyester thermosets. The polyesters were prepared from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and propylene glycol, using either tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, tetrabromophthalic anhydride or chlorendic anhydride as the halogen source. Marked differences were observed in the effect of the two oxides. The critical oxygen index values of the halogenated polyesters containing maoybdenum (VI)oxide decreased with increase in timperature, which is in accordance with what is normally found for organic polymers, with and without additives. In contrast to this, the critical oxygen index values of the formulations containing antimony(II)oxide increased with increased with increase in temperature to reach a maximum value at around 100-150 °C. These results indicate that antimony(II)oxide is a better flame retardant than molybdenum(VI)oxide, since not only is it superior at the primary ignition stage but it shows enhanced activity at the higher temperatures which would be experienced by polymeric material in the early stages of a fire. It is concluded that higher temperature critical oxygen index studies provide a better guide to the flame retardant activity of additives than do ambient critical oxygen index determinations alone.

    Notes: The mechanisms of incapacitation resulting from exposures to the thermal decomposition products of flexible and rigid polyurethane foams (PUF) were studied over a range of different temperatures under pyrolytic or non-flaming oxidative decomposition conditions. Individual cynomolgus monkeys were exposed to atmospheres increasing in separate experiments from very low concentrations until early physiological signs of incapacitation were detected. When flexible PUF was pyrolysed at 900°C and rigid PUF was oxidized at 600°C, clear atmospheres containing CO and HCN were produced and the signs of toxicity were very similar to those produced by HCN gas alone, consisting of an episode of hyperventilation followed by a semi-conscious state. Pyrolysis of flexible PUF at 600°C and 300°C produced a dense yellow smoke but no HCN. The signs, consisting of hyperventilation throughout exposure and dyspnoea afterwards, were consistent with pulmonary irritation, Since TDI monmer is not present at 6000 C it is concluded that some as-yet unidentified but highly irritant chemical species is present in smoke from flexible PUF.

    Notes: A theoretical and experimental study of buoyant, axisymmetric, turbulent, diffusion flames is described. Measurements included profiles of mean velocity, mean temperature and mean concentrations of major species for flames having heat release rates of 1.67 and 8.51 kW. An integral model was developed and calibrated with both present and earlier measurements. Empirical constants account for flow entrainment and rates of fuel consumption. Overall, the integral model provided satisfactory predictions of bulk velocity, temperature and concentrations in both combusting and non-combusting plumes.

    Notes: Progress in the field of theoretical prediction of fire resistance has been rapid in recent years. A procedure has been developed at the National Research Council of Canada for calculation of the fire resistance of structural members. The various steps in the construction of a mathematical model to calculate temperatures, deformations and strength are shown using as an example the calculation of the fire resistance of a cylindrical tubular steel column filled with concrete. A comparison of results calculated using the model with those of a fire test is also discussed.

    Notes: Laboratory tests have been developed that evaluate realistically the protective performance of clothing materials and garments. Test conditions are chosen to stress the high temperature resistance of materials in the same manner as in an industrial flash fire exposure. A second degree burn in human tissue is used as the criteria to ate performance of materials. Test results have been correlated between the small-scale lab swatch test and a full-scale instrumented manikin garment test, and these results related to industrial experience. The TPP lab test has been found useful in evaluating the performance of candidate materials as replacement for existing materials with known acceptable protective performance. It can be used to specify the level of protection needed in a garment when the intensity of the exposure hazard is known. Also, the test is especially useful for developing new materials and selecting candidates for additional field testing.

    Notes: A new bench-scale rate of heat release calorimeter utilizing the oxygen consumption principle has been developed for use in fire testing and research. Specimens may be of uniform or composite construction and may be tested in a horizontal, face-up orientation, or, for those which do not melt, in a vertical orientation. An external irradiance of zero to over 100 kW m-2 may be imposed by means of a temperature-controlled radiant heater. The rate of heat release is determined by measuring combustion product gas flow and oxygen depletion, while the mass loss is also recorded simultaneously. The instrument has been designed to be capable of higher accuracy than existing instruments and yet to be simple to operate and moderate in construction cost. The instrument is thermed a ‘cone calorimeter’ because of the geometric arrangement of the electric heater.

    Notes: ‘Normalized heat load’ is a quantifier of the destructive potential of fires, real-world compartment fires and test fires alike. For real-world fires it is subject to some uncertainties owing to the random nature of two of the variables it depends on: ventilation and fire load. For test fires also it is subject to uncertainties owing to a moderate degree of randomness that characterizes the results of test fires. A procedure is described for predicting the failure probability in fire of the boundaries of a compartment designed for fire resistance on the basis of information concerning the characteristics of the compartment and the design value of the fire load. The procedure is essentially deterministic, employing statistical considerations only as far as required by the nature of some of the input variables. With the aid of second-moment analysis, it is possible, furthermore, to design the compartment boundaries for appropriate target failure probabilities.

    Notes: An interactive computer program for simulating the early fire growth in an enclosure is described. The enclosure is assumed to be divided into distinct homogeneous zones. The rate of heat release is defined for the fire and the conservation equations are solved for the zones, yielding the temperature and radiant heat conditions in the fire room. The purpose of the work was to develop a computer program to be used by people working with fire engineering applications and having little experience in computer calculations. The user converses with the program via a terminal connected to the computer. The dialogue is governed by commands adapted to the concepts of the user. Results of the computer model are compared with measured data of the burning of wood and plastic cribs in an enclosure, showing a good agreement between measured and calculated results.

    Notes: Measurements of the limits of flaming and smoldering combustion and relative rates of burning under elevated temperatures and oxygen-depleted conditions have been used to characterize the fire behaviour of polymeric materials using a semi-empicical approach (based on scientific theory) in terms of Power Law Indices. The work was based on modified current tests; namely the Limiting Oxygen Index (ASTM D2863) at elevated temperatures and the Setchkin Flash and Self-Ignition Test (ASTM D1929) modified to operate in oxygen-depleted atmospheres and to record rate of weight loss. Results show that the relative flammability and rate of burning of materials can change markedly with fire environment, and confirms the need to test materials lunder conditions representative of those of the anticipated end-use hazard.

    Notes: Equipment has been developed for measuring the rate of heat release from building materials in an open test arrangement. The method is based on an oxygen consumption technique. A vertical sample is placed under an open hood in which the combustion gases and a certain amount of air are collected. The decrease in oxygen concentration and the mass flow of the gases are measured in the exhaust duct. The rate of heat release is then calculated. The equipment has been calibrated with good agreement between input and measured effects. The total response time for the system is 10s. The method has been used for testing building materials at radiation intensities up to 5W Cm-2. It is able to distinguish between different board materials, and the repeatability is good, The paper describes the equipment, including the weighing of a burning sample and the selection of test condition. Smoke and gas analysis can be added when desirable. Some test results with building materials are also presented.

    Notes: An apparatus based on the BS 476 Part 7 small scale flame-spread specification, which has evolved over a number of years, is described. Many changes from the original simple gas/air furnace have been introduced, which have led to the development of a very useful flame-spread test apparatus where all known variables are precisely controlled. The work has shown that the radiometers described in the standard do not monitor all the variables which affect flame-spread results, and reported problems of reproducibility and variation on the large scale test, may be due to inadequate control of the furnace. The significance of the results is that the use of gas/air radian panels as the basis for flame-spread tests needs to be re-examined. All parameters should be carefully controlled and the entire procedure, particularly regarding the use of pilot ignition sources, needs to be reconsidered. There is an increasing need for test methods which assess materials at radiation intensities beyond that given by small ignition sources. The type of flame-spread apparatus described in the paper may help fulfil this important requirement.

    Notes: Quantitative pyrolysis gas chromatography studies have been conducted on three grades of cross-linked polyester resin formulated for improved resistance to surface spread of flame. Pyrolysis temperatures from 723 to 1273 K were used, and these values correspond to ‘surface’ temperatures of materials exposed to heat fluxed of 15-149 kW m-2 which are typical of conditions experienced in real fires. Comparison is made with earlier macro studies on the evolution of smoke from plastics materials exposed to similar heat fluxes under an inert atmosphere. There is some correlation between the smoke obscuration data obtained in previous macro studies and the yield of volatile aromatic products evolved on pyrolysis. The presence of flame retardants increases the formation of carbon in the pyrolysis residue and decreases the yield of volatile aromatic products isolated. The results are considered in the context of mechanisms of smoke formation.

It has been shown that the quantity of smoke produced depends upon the oxygen concentration of the oxidizing gas as well as on the concentration of diisooctylphthalate present in the polymer. The results of this work have been analysed using an empirical equation proposed by the authors, which correlates the maximum smoke density (σmax) with oxygen concentration. This equation may be written \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \sigma _{\max } = \sigma _{LOI} \exp (- k(No_2 - LOI)) $$\end{document} where No2 is the molar concentration of oxygen in the oxidizing gas, and LOI refers to the limiting or critical concentration of oxygen at which at the polymer will just burn, as defined by the ASTM test 2863. The effect of various additives, particularly organic iodine compounds, as smoke suppressants has also been investigated.

    Notes: Various celloulosic materials were evaluated for ignitability and flash-fire propensity, using screening test methods developed at the University of San Francisco. Time to ignition, using radiation from a high-temperature radiant source without a pilot flame, appeared to be primarily a function of heat flux and material density, rather than of type of wood or celloulosic board. At heat flux levels from 5.8 to 10.5 W cm-2, time to ignition was shortest for cellulose fiberboard with a density of 0.2225 g ml-1, followed by western red cedar at 0.314 g ml-1, eastern white pine at 0.348 g ml-1, southern yellow pine at 0.422 g ml-1, Douglas fir at 0.565 g ml -1, and longest for hardboard at 0.878 g ml-1. For the cotton and rayon woven-pile upholstery fabrics, time to ignition appeared to increase with increasing fabric weight.For Cellulose insulation treated with boron-containing additives, flash-fire magnitude decreased with increasing additive content. Flash-fire magnitude decreased more that could be accounted for by decreasing weight loss alone, indication reduction in the combustibility of the volatiles produced. Reduction in flash-fire propensity of cotton bating by treatment with boron-containing additives was also observed.

    Notes: The Australian Children's Nightwear Standards have been accepted as the basis of legislation in all States of Australia and by the Commonwealth Government. The standards are based on the philosophy that garment design as well as combustion characteristics of the material is an important consideration in assessing the fire hazard of nightwear. Using this approach a classification system has been devised which place children's nightwear into three categories of potential fire hazard. If a garment cannot be classified then it cannot be legally sold in Australia. The combustion characteristics tested are ease of ignition, rate of flame propagation and surface burn properties. For classification all materials used for children's nightwear must pass the latter test. The design of the standard test methods, criteria for classification and the concepts of safe design were developed by collection data from burns accidents and burnt clothing from accident victims from the burns research unit of a large children's hospital and by the study of the burning behavior of clothing on a manikin. The combustion criteria are not so stringent as to require the use of inherently flame resist materials or the use of flame retardant finishes. This approach in combination with safe design criterial enable commercially available textiles to meet the legislative requirements for children's nightwear. This mean that the nightwear standards are inexpensive to attain and do not require a sophisticated textile technology. A consumer labeling system has been designed to describe the three categories but yet there is no evidence to suggest that this had had any effect in reducing the number of burns accidents - consumers apparently regrading safe nightwear as a low priority. An inconsistent aspect of the calssification system is the incorporation into the standards in 1977 of criteria to prevent the classification of cotton flannelette nightdresses and the incorporation of arbitrary requirements for other nightdress containing cotton. These inconsistencies have been caused fundamentally by a problem which continues to bedevil the writing of good standards in Australia - that is, the lack of nationwide statistics on burns accidents.

    Notes: A Collaborative Programme of work was carried out by two laboratories to asscess a procedure for identifying paint systems which possess poor ‘in service’ lives by virtue of being repeatedly washed. The small scale surface spread of flame apparatus as described in BS 476 part 7 was used to measure any change in the surface spread of flame characteristic of eight coating system, applied to two substrates, as a result of washing the coated surfaces. The results indicate that both laboratories ranked the paints in the same order and the reproducibility of the proposed washing procedure was good. The most consistent results were obtained when the coating systems were applied to standard hardboard. It is suggested that flame retardant coating system having poor resistance to washing would be identified if a limit of changes of average spread of flame were set at 75 mm. This investigation was carried out in support of the activities of BSI committee PVC/12, Fire Retardant Paints.

    Notes: The thermal behaviour in air of lignins modified by chlorophosphazenes as well as that of the raw materials of lignins has been investigated using thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The thermogravimetry and derivative thermogravimetry studies of lignins modified by chlorophosphazenes have shown their thermal resistance to be relatively higher than that of the intital raw materials of lignins in concrete kraft lignin and sodium ligninosulfonate. The differential thermal studies have demonstrated that the thermal degradation of products investigated takes place via exothermic processes. The lignins modified by chlorophosphazenes have been shown to be thermal and flame-resistant materials.

    Notes: A review was made of smoldering fire experiments conducted in closed rooms and buildings. The results were summarized by tabulating maximum levels of CO, the time integral of CO concentration (‘dose’), CO2, temperature rise and oxygen consumption. A hazard time based on the attainment of a CO dose equal to 4.5% CO-minutes and the time for transition to flaming were also tabulated. The likelihood of reaching a critical CO condition during smoldering seems to be comparable with the likelihood of having transition to flaming occur. A theoretical model, requiring inputs of CO production rate and energy release rate, was executed and compared with available data. The theoretical results for CO concentration as a function of time were in good agreement with the experimental data. The model offers a means of extrapolating test data to compartments of various size in order to assess the general hazard of CO due to smoldering.

    Notes: Reaction to fire tests are the main criteria used by legislators of fire regulations to determine the suitability of different materials for use in building construction. These do not always give reliable results, particularly when applied to new man-made materials. Part of the explanation for this is the lack of detailed understanding of the heat and mass transfer processes occurring in fire. This is in part due to a lack of measurements of the fluctuating property field in the source plume. In this paper measurements of the probability density functions, spectra and mean square fluctuations of temperature together with the probability of combustion are reported for a stimulated fire plume. The results are consistent with the model of a fire comprising a series of narrow flame fronts oscillating at the flame flicker frequency (which for this system is 3 Hz). The effects of thermal inertia in thermocouples on the determination of mean and fluctuating gas temperature have been examined using the treatment of Ballantyne, Boon and Moss. The high-frequency limitations of thermocouple and electrostatic probes have been discussed in the context of trubulent filed measurements in fires.

    Notes: A mathematical Model for estimating the time available for safe egress from a fire is formulated. The model simulates the conditions which develop during the course of an enclosure fire. Since life safety considerations are primary, the simulation model which is adopted focuses attention only on phenomena which develop between the times of fire ignition and onset of hazardous conditions. This allows significant simplifications in modeling which may not be otherwise justified. Using computed variables of a simulated fire scenario of interest, times of fire detection and onset of hazard which are deduced from realistic detection and hazard criteria would be estimated. The Available Safe Egress Time (ASET) would be defined as the length of the time interval which separates these two events. Quantitative specifications for a variety of detection and hazard criteria are identified. Results of exercising the model are presented, and ASET estimates are obtained for a wide variety of realistic fire scenarios. A comparison between experimental results of a multi-room fire test and prediction of the single-room model suggest that the model has potential utility in providing practical simulations of multi-room fire environments.

Protective clothing against heat and flames has to be evaluated not only for flame-retardance by a vertical flame test but also for heat transfer from convective (flames), radiant and conductive (molten metal) heat exposure to ensure a realistic assessment of the potential protective offered and required. Textile furnishings (carpets, upholstery, curtains) have to be evaluated for flame-retardance, heat release, smoke emission and toxicity of combustion products to assess the overall flammability hazard. Evaluation and consideration of only on e flammability parameter, e.g. toxicity of combustion products, can lead to misleading conclusions about the flammability hazard of a material.

    Notes: The essential cause of the growth of pore pressure during cyclic loading is identified as an ‘autogenous’ shrinkage or densification of the solid phase of the soil and this is related to a strain path parameter. Introduction of this ‘shrinkage’ coupled with an elasto-plastic behaviour of the soil skeleton allows a full non-linear dynamic analysis to be conducted up to the point of structural failure for any earthquake input. Explicit time marching procedures are used. The procedure outlined is applicable to all problems of complex geometry and for conditions of undrained or partially drained behaviour at a moderate computational cost.

A mathematical model is developed and the differential equations governing the system together with the proper boundary conditions are derived. A variational formulation of the problem and a convenient approximate method of solution are also presented.For numerical analysis, the problem of a rectangular plate on consolidating soil under various loading conditions is numerically solved and the effects of various physical factors on the settlements and the pore pressures are studied.

    Notes: Numerical codes which use a one-point quadrature integration rule to calculate stiffness matrices for the 2-D quadrilateral element and the 3-D hexahedral element, produce matrices which are singular with respect to a number of displacement patterns, other than the rigid body patterns. In this paper an economical method is derived to remove this singularity and which also produces accurate flexural response. For rectilinear element geometry the method is equivalent to the incompatible model element of Wilson et al.7 For non-rectilinear element geometry a slight modification of the scheme is required in order to assure that it passes the patch test. The method of this paper can also be used in finite difference codes which experience similar difficulties.

    Notes: The paper reports on the results of theoretical and experimental investigations on the spontaneous formation of shear bands in sand bodies. The phenomenon is considered as a bifurcation problem. Consequently, material response and configuration-dependent loading determine the bifurcation mode. Both Coulomb's and Roscoe's solutions of inclination of the shear band can be correct theoretically and experimentally. The first one holds for non-rotating stress axes, the second one for co-rotating stress and strain increment axes during failure. Values in between can occur if the rotation of principal stress axes is not equal to one of these limits. If Coulomb's inclination of shear band occurs, there is a thin deforming material layer separating rigid bodies. Inside the shear band non-coaxiality of strain increment and stress holds from the beginning. If Roscoe's inclination of shear band occurs, it is separating two deforming bodies. Inside the shear band strain increment and stress are coaxial at peak.

    Notes: It is commonly accepted that the mechanical behaviour of granular masses is strongly affected by their microstructure, namely the relative arrangement of voids and particles, i.e. the granular fabric. Therefore, parameters which characterize the granular fabric are of paramount importance in a fundamental description of the overall macroscopic stresses and deformation measures. In this paper several measures of granular fabric are introduced for a random assembly of spherical granules, using a statistical approach. In particular, a second-order symmetric tensor, Fij, emerges from this consideration, which seems to be of fundamental importance for the description of fabric, and which is closely related to the distribution of the contact normals in the assembly. The relation between fabric measures presented here and those discussed by other investigators is also discussed.

    Notes: A method for the analysis of the consolidation of a horizontally layered soil under plane conditions is developed. The method depends upon the transformation of the governing equations by a Fourier trasform. This transformation has the effect of reducing the partial differential equations of consolidation to ordinary differential equations. The ordinary differential equations are then solved using a finite layer or finite difference approach. Once the solution in the transformed plane has been found, the actual solution is synthesized by Fourier inversion. The method leads to a considerable reduction in the amount of core storage necessary for solution and enables the solution of quite significant problems to be obtained on a mini-computer.

    Notes: Localization of deformation in elastic-plastic solids subject to plane strain deformation are investigated numerically. It is shown that the localization may be captured accurately in finite element models by employing (1) the elastic-plastic material stiffness to form the global stiffness, (2) in the case of symmetrical configurations, an imperfection in the form of a weak element, and (3) in the case of incompressible materials, a reduced selective integration scheme which alleviates mesh ‘locking’. Accuracy of the technique is demonstrated by applying it to analyse the classical punch and slope stability problems. Its versatility is illustrated by applying it to analyse finite deformation problems and shear bands formations in associative and non-associative elastic-plastic solids.

    Notes: The notion of overall macroscopic stress in granular masses is examined from a fundamental point of view by a statistical consideration of the contact forces that are transmitted by the contacting granules at the microscale. This examination leads in a natural way to relations between the macroscopic stress and the resulting granular fabric. The overall stresses are expressed in terms of the contact forces in two different but complementary ways: (1) by a statistical averaging over the sample volume of contact forces and “branches” which are vectors connecting the centroids of two contacting granules; and (2) by defining the overall tractions transmitted across an interior imagined plane as the sum of the contact forces which represent the mechanical effect of granules on one side of a unit area of this plane, upon those on the other side. Conditions under which the two representations of overall stresses are equivalent, are examined in detail. In addition, explicit results are given, which, define stresses in terms of the fabric and other microstructural characteristics of the granular mass.

    Notes: During the last ten years the Calculus of variations technique has been applied to solve the problem of stability of slopes. All published methods are essentially based on the attainment of a functional and the search for its absolute minimum or maximum by vanishing its first variation.Obviously this statement of the problem is valid only if such a minimum or maximum exists and can be obtained by making the first variation of the functional equal to zero. So, these implicit hypotheses must be checked.This work analyses from this point of view the validity of the methods proposed by ‘Baker and Garber’, ‘Chen’ and ‘Castillo and Revilla’, and demonstrates that the first two methods are incorrectly stated while the third one is correct at least in the case of a frictionless soil.

    Notes: A method is devised for measuring soil thermal diffusivity in situ. It is based on direct experimental simulation of the finite difference approximation to the one-dimensional heat conduction equation.The method does not require the soil to be homogeneous except between the three thermometers that are used, at depths z + d, z and z - d. Nor need the energy input curve be sinusoidal. However, it must be fairly smooth for the finite difference approximation to be accurate.Experimental results for London Clay are presented, obtained using thermometers at depths of 1, 6 and 11 cm to give a mean thermal diffusivity of 0.0074 cm2/s at a depth of 6 cm. This value is consistent with other estimates of diffusivity for clay soils.The method is capable of automation, and should be suitable for use on engineering sites, at low cost.The method is capable of generalization to other linear diffusion equations containing one independent parameter. The same limitation also applies to its application to constitutive or geometrical non-linear one dimensional diffusion equations, and each equation requires individual study to assess feasibility of use of the method.The method in effect uses the usual finite difference approximation, not to prepare a numerical solution, but to design an experiment carried out essentially within the finite difference ‘molecule’. The measured parameter of the diffusion equation is the usable product of the method.

    Notes: The pressure versus settlement response is highly non-linear for soils, in general. In the present study, a cubic equation of the type p = K1w - K2w3 is suggested to incorporate the non-linear behaviour. A trapezoidal footing with constant depth resting on a subgrade having non-linear response is analysed. The resulting fourth order non-linear differential equation with variable coefficients is solved by using the Galerkin technique and beam characteristic functions are employed to obtain faster convergence. The results are presented in the form of non-dimensional charts for valid ranges of footings and soil parameters.

    Notes: The analysis of mechanisms which could control the growth of fractures in non-homogeneous regions is of paramount importance. One such mechanism is the behavior of the fracture as it reaches a frictional interface; coupled with this is the question of re-initiation, e.g. whether a fracture can be contained within the region of initiation. Though the problems of slippage have been dealt with by other investigators, the present paper gives a more comprehensive picture and detailed treatment: effects of various frictional models at an interface are considered for a crack which intersects it at any angle; specialization then allows comparison with existing results in the literature.The problem of re-initiation, after slippage has occurred at a frictional interface, is also considered, using two different models. First, by introducing microcracks in the adjacent stratum and looking at the effects on propagation criteria and, secondly, by examining the actual distribution of the stress tangential to the slip surface; detailed computations are performed and a simple criterion for re-initiation is given, relating the re-initiation stress dominantly to the confining stress on the interface.

    Notes: Incremental theory of plasticity has been used to derive associated and non-associated stress-strain relations for analysing the undrained stress-strain response of isotropic normally and lightly overconsolidated clays. A series of comparisons between the theoretical stress-strain-pore pressure response and laboratory test results for 3 in. × 6 in. samples of very high degree of repeatability and reproduceability have been described.     Notes: An investigation was conducted to develop a comprehensive moisture model for predicting non-isothermal moisture conditions in soils. An extensive literature review indicated that a model based on the Philip and de Vries equations for non-isothermal moisture movement and heat conduction would give the best results. By using numerical methods, the implicit finite difference approximations to the moisture movement and heat-transfer equations were programmed for computer solution of water content and temperature in the soil with time.Validation studies indicate that the moisture model can be used to predict accurately moisture conditions in the soil. The model was validated by using hydraulic data from laboratory studies conducted on soil columns compacted with AASHO A-3 and AASHO A-4 soil.The application of the moisture model to the study of non-isothermal moisture movement in the field is demonstrated. The influence of parameters such as water table depth, precipitation, and soil hydraulic properties on soil moisture content are shown by use of the moisture model. The model is shown to be applicable to a wide range of boundary conditions and that it predicts the moisture-temperature regime with time in soils utilizing climatic input data.

    Notes: The paper deals with the determination of the flow properties of expansive and unsaturated clays under different conditions of stress. By choosing the moisture content as the dependent variable, the well known non-linear diffusin equation is derived. Numerical solutions using a finite element program are presented, assuming a linear relationship between the moisture diffusivity and the concentration (the relative moisture content). These solutions are interpreted and a procedure is proposed to derive the flow properties of the clay from the sorption curves. Results of tests are presented and used to illustrate the procedure. It is found that the lower the stress applied, the smaller the initial moisture diffusivity and the stronger the dependence of the moisture diffusivity upon the concentration.

    Notes: The equations governing the undrained linear elastic behaviour of a saturated soil are formally similar to the equations governing slow of an incompressible Newtonian viscous fluid. This principle of equivalence can then be effectively employed to obtain the load-deflection reiationship for a deep rigid anchor with the shape of a solid of revolution which is embedded in bonded contact with an unbounded incompressible elastic medium. It is found that the load-deflection relationship for the deep rigid anchor can be directly recovered from the expression for the drag induced on an impermeable object with the same size and shape as the anchor, which is appropriately placed in a slow viscous flow region of uniform velocity.

    Notes: The effects and simulation of driving of structures (piles) into saturated soil media are discussed, and procedures for numerical simulation of driving are proposed. Consolidation caused by changes in stresses and in pore water pressures in the soil mass due to the driving is solved by using a finite element procedure. The changes in stresses and pore water pressures due to driving are obtained on the basis of the cavity expansion approach, and are introduced in the finite element procedure as initial conditions. Stresses and deformations around a pile as consolidation proceeds are plotted and related to the quantities such as a wall friction, and point and total loads relevant to analysis and design.
