Description: The stratigraphic section “Kellwasser-Tal” is the type locality of the Late Devonian Kellwasser Horizons. The locality, which was already badly preserved shortly after its discovery in the middle of the 19 th century by F.A. Roemer, has recently been re-opened and widened. The newly created section ranges from the upper Frasnian to the Lower Carboniferous “Kulm-Kieselschiefer”. Although some parts of the outcrop are highly tectonised it is nonetheless possible to reconstruct the sedimentary sequence. The Kellwasser Horizons, connected to one of the five most severe mass-extinction events in Earth History (Kellwasser Crisis), can now be studied again in detail. Conodonts sampled by O.H. Walliser (Göttingen) in the 1980s as well as new samples were investigated with respect to conodont biostratigraphy and microfacies. The type locality is situated in the European Geopark Harz-Braunschweiger Land-Ostfalen and should be protected as a geosite.

Description: The volcanic centers of Kos, Yali and Nisyros lie at the eastern edge of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc. Recent swath bathymetric surveys and seismic profiling, conducted by HCMR, led to the discovery of several submarine volcanic centers and massive underwater volcaniclastic deposits. Further research aboard the E/V “Nautilus” was conducted at the area in October 2010. Avyssos crater, located northeast of Strongyli islet, is believed to have been the original location of the massive eruption of Kos ignimbrite 160,000 years ago. Exploration of Avyssos showed that it the seafloor is mostly covered with fine-grained sediment full with traces of bioturbation. Hydrothermal activity was not evident at any point. Yali and Strongyli represent Late Pleistocene to Holocene volcanic islands that have developed between the islands of Kos and Tilos. ROV exploration of the eastern flank of Yali revealed wave-type sediment structures, as well as linear fractures at various depths. Several smaller craters were also discovered on the northwest slopes of Strongyli, aligned with ENE-WSW trending fractures with no signs of hydrothermal activity. Heavy biogenic encrustations cover the volcanic rock outcrops on the flanks of both Yali and Strongyli. Analysis of recovered samples will provide information about their relationship to the geology of the nearby islands.

Description: Cyanobacterial community composition was studied along a salinity gradient from the saline Spring Fuliya towards the water column of Lake Kinneret. The samples included a gradient of salinities ranging from 4270 mg Cl L-1 (Saline Spring) to 239 mg Cl L-1 (Lake Kinneret). Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and cloning of the 16 S rRNA gene, as well as cloning and sequencing of the psbA gene, were used to characterize cyanobacterial community composition. Despite the differences in salinity, similar cyanobacterial communities were observed in the lake and the saline spring, the only exception being the highest salinity sample (4270 mg Cl L-1). Both, DGGE patterns and results of the clone libraries revealed the dominance of cyanobacteria with colonial Gloeocapsa and unicellular Synechococcus as the closest known cultured relatives, independently of the salinity. These results suggest that cyanobacterial populations inhabiting this freshwater lake and its saline sources can adapt to a wide range of salinities.

Description: 1. We describe the abundance of an autochthonous alphaproteobacteria Sphingomonas sp. and its lytic phages during a period of about 3 months in Lake Plußsee, Northern Germany. This is the first report of a specific autochthonous phage host system of a heterotrophic bacterial strain in a natural freshwater environment. 2. The concentration of bacterial hosts (Sphingomonas sp. strain B18) fluctuated between 20 and 1,150 (median 168) colony-forming units (CFU) mL-1 and the concentration of the specific lytic phages ranged from 20 to 680 (median 110) plaque-forming units (PFU) mL-1. Different Sphingomonas sp. strains were isolated, showing different sensitivity against two phage isolates. The specific virus to bacteria ratio (VBR) varied by a factor of about 280 and ranged from 0.03 to about 8.5 (median 0.6). 3. Encounter rates of 0.0007 to 0.198 d-1 (median 0.03 d-1) were calculated from the measured concentrations of Sphingomonas sp. and its lytic phages. From changes of PFU between two consecutive samplings net phage decay rates in a range between 0.003 and 1.3 d-1 (median 0.26 d-1) were calculated. 4. Concentration factors were calculated which enable sufficient encounter rates to explain the concentrations of bacteria and their phages. 5. The results of Kokjohn et al. (1991) support the suggestion that the explanation of the coexistence of lytic phages and their host bacteria by the used encounter rate model needs to be revised.

Description: The microbial diversity of five unconnected high altitude (≥ 3800 m a.s.l.) wetlands from the Chilean Altiplano was analyzed by a culture-independent approach, using 16 S rRNA gene sequences of different microbial groups. The wetlands (Chungara Lake, Parinacota wetland, Piacota Lake, Salar de Huasco and Salar de Ascotan) differed in terms of habitat type and physicochemical properties. The bacterial communities of these systems were dominated by Bacteroidetes (24-94 % of the clones) and Proteobacteria (Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta subgroups) with smaller contributions by the Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Planctomycetes, Verrucomicrobia, Chloroflexi, Cyanobacteria, Acidobacteria, Deinococcus-Thermus and Candidate Division WS3. Fourteen phylotypes matching Alphaproteobacteria were part of the marine Roseobacter clade, representing new clusters of this group. Archaeal diversity was much lower than that seen for bacteria, and was dominated by Euryarchaeota; however Crenarchaeota were also present. Considering the large differences in microbial community composition between sites and samples, the presence of eleven phylotypes common to two or more habitats is highlighted. The frequent presence of new taxa in different phylogenetic groups in the altiplanic wetlands studied here revealed the unique characteristics of Bacteria and Archaea in these fragile Andean ecosystems.

Description: El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the Pacific and the analogous Atlantic Niño mode are generated by processes involving coupled ocean–atmosphere interactions known as the Bjerknes feedback. It has been argued that the Atlantic Niño mode is more strongly damped than ENSO, which is presumed to be closer to neutrally stable. In this study the stability of ENSO and the Atlantic Niño mode is compared via an analysis of the Bjerknes stability index. This index is based on recharge oscillator theory and can be interpreted as the growth rate for coupled modes of ocean–atmosphere variability. Using observational data, an ocean reanalysis product, and output from an ocean general circulation model, the individual terms of the Bjerknes index are calculated for the first time for the Atlantic and then compared to results for the Pacific. Positive thermocline feedbacks in response to wind stress forcing favor anomaly growth in both basins, but they are twice as large in the Pacific compared to the Atlantic. Thermocline feedback is related to the fetch of the zonal winds, which is much greater in the equatorial Pacific than in the equatorial Atlantic due to larger basin size. Negative feedbacks are dominated by thermal damping of sea surface temperature anomalies in both basins. Overall, it is found that both ENSO and the Atlantic Niño mode are damped oscillators, but the Atlantic is more strongly damped than the Pacific primarily because of the weaker thermocline feedback.

Description: In many subaerial hydrothermal ore deposits arsenian pyrite is an important host for Au, however, arsenian pyrite is rare on the modern seafloor. During a recent survey for submarine hydrothermal mineralization in the western Woodlark Basin volcanic breccias containing abundant arsenian pyrite were dredged from the flanks of a volcanic seamount in a water depth of 2000 m. This area is particularly interesting because it is located at the transition from continental splitting to oceanic spreading where enhanced heat flow and deep crustal faults may fertilize mineralization. The sulfidic breccia is essentially monomictic and matrix-supported containing altered dacitic clasts. Mineralogical investigation of the breccia reveals silicification and sulfidation as the main alteration types. Quartz occurs in fragments and also constitutes the breccia matrix attesting to silicification as a significant alteration process. Pyrite is the dominant ore mineral with only minor amounts of Fe-oxyhydroxide and goethite. Bulk geochemistry shows a slight enrichment of Au (0.12 ppm) in association with elements such as As-Ag-Hg-Zn-Pb-Sb, key elements indicative of a low sulfidation environment. Three generations of pyrite are recognized on the basis of morphology. Arsenic-free, early framboidal pyrite (py1) is overgrown by arsenian colloform (py2) or massive pyrite (py3) containing up to 3.93 wt% As. Arsenic speciation in the pyrite is in the form of As1- and As3+. The presence of arsenian pyrite in hydrothermal breccias at this seamount indicates the potential for Au mineralization in the area.

Description: All coleoid hatchlings have a special complex of glandular cells situated at the mantle tip, which store a hatching enzyme that is released at the close of embryonic development; it locally dissolves the chorion membrane and any surrounding envelopes, thus producing a hatch opening. In most coleoids the hatchling also uses auxiliary equipment and actions to effectively extract itself from the egg case. This article considers the co-aptation between parental (egg cases) and filial contributions (hatching gland etc) in different coleoid groups.

Description: This proceeding volume results from the submitted abstracts of the international symposium “The Stability of Rainforest Margins: Linking Ecological, Economic and Social Constraints” held on September 19 – 23, 2005 in Göttingen, Germany. Tropical rainforests disappear at an alarming rate causing unprecedented losses in biodiversity and ecosystem services. Rainforests are hot spots of biodiversity as well as important carbon sinks. Despite an increased recognition of the value of these and other valuable public goods provided by tropical rainforests at national and international levels, the rainforests of Asia, Africa, Australia and Latin America continue to be seriously threatened by various forms of human encroachment. The analysis of policies and socio-economic and ecological determinants that either stabilize or threaten tropical forest margins requires a holistic interdisciplinary scientific approach. Such an approach has been adopted by a large scale research program titled “Stability of Rainforest Margins in Indonesia” (www.storma.de). This research program started in 2000 and is jointly conducted by the two German Universities, the Georg-August-University of Göttingen (GAUG) and the University of Kassel (UNIK), and by two Indonesian Universities, the Agricultural University of Bogor (Institut Pertanian Bogor, IPB) and the Tadulako University (UNTAD) in Palu. Referring to the main research foci of STORMA, the symposium features three interconnected thematic foci of interdisciplinary research. They refer to changes in the extent and intensity of agricultural and forest land use in tropical forest margins and their implications for rural development and for conservation of natural resources such as biodiversity, soils and water. The first focus “Integrated spatial modeling of land use in tropical forest margins” concerns rain forest margins around the world which comprise a variety of landuse systems, with forest gardens, annual crops in slash-and-burn and agroforestry systems, as well as intensive cultivation, mostly in the valleys. An understanding of the dynamics of land-use change and related resource degradation under various policies scenarios is required, and strategies to reduce and potentially reverse degradation processes are to be developed. The second focus “Sustainable management of agroforestry systems” concerns lowintensity agroforestry which may support high biodiversity stabilizing ecosystem functioning, in particular when shaded by natural trees and neighboured by natural forest. In contrast, high-intensity agroforestry with planted shade trees and in an agricultural landscape context may be characterized by less environmental benefits and high agrochemical inputs. In this focus, the ecological and socio-economic benefits of different management practices will be compared and related to patterns and processes in natural forests. The third focus “Ecological and socio-economic impacts of different forest-use intensities” analyzes ecological and socio-economic benefits and costs across different types of forest use. The consequences of low- and medium-intensity forest-use practices, such as selective timber and rattan extraction, for biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are assessed. We are grateful to our sponsors, namely the German Research Council (DFG), the Georg-August-University Göttingen and the University of Kassel. Our special Thanks goes to the Universities Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) and Tadulako University (UNTAD) in Palu for their cooperation in the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB 552) “Stability of Rainforest Margins in Indonesia” (STORMA).

Description: The long-term climate cooling during Campanian - Maastrichtian times is not well understood to date, especially because of the uncertainty introduced by low temporal resolution of biostratigraphy and the pronounced provincialism between tropical and temperate taxa. Two new high-resolution carbon isotope records derived from the boreal shelf-sea section at Lägerdorf-Kronsmoor-Hemmoor, northern Germany and the tropical Pacific at Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 305, Shatsky Rise, reduce these uncertainties. The records can be correlated with an accuracy not achieved by biostratigraphic methods so far. Distinct carbon isotope events in the late Campanian and the early Maastrichtian can be identified at both localities suggesting to represent global carbon cycle perturbations. Especially, the negative carbon isotope excursion in the early Maastrichtian, a pronounced feature of open-ocean records from the Pacific and Southern oceans, is recognized for the first time at a shelf-sea locality related to the North Atlantic Ocean. Furthermore, two short-term positive excursions are identified as superimposed signals to this event. The improved stratigraphy provides the unique opportunity to recognize leads and lags between the carbon cycle and ocean circulation of different marine settings and ecosystems, leading to a better understanding of their causes and effects.

Description: The present work investigates the quality of the shortwave and and longwave downward radiation (DSR, DLR) at the sea surface over the Atlantic Ocean as retrieved from Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) measurements and EUMETSAT's Climate Monitoring - Satellite Application Facility (CM-SAF) algorithms. The observations taken at two transatlantic research cruises have been an ideal basis to be compared with the MSG products for DSR and DLR derived from Meteosat-8 and Meteosat-9. Onboard the research vessels "Akademik Ioffe" and "Polarstern" high quality in situ measurements of both radiation fluxes have been performed. Continuous full sky imagery and standard meteorological observations enable a comprehensive evaluation of the skills of MSG DSR- and DLR-retrievals in different climate zones and under various cloud and weather conditions. The DSR was retrieved by MSG with a positive bias of 2.77 Wm−2 during the Ioffe cruise, and 22.23 Wm−2 during the Polarstern cruise. The bias for the DLR was −1.73 Wm−2 and 2.76 Wm−2, respectively. The differences between the two cruises mainly arise from the different weather conditions. No significant differences between the satellite products from Meteosat-8 and Meteosat-9 were found. In general DSR and DLR for clear sky conditions are captured with a high accuracy. Largest retrieval errors occur for fast fluctuating broken cloud conditions, though on average the MSG algorithm match the in-situ observations well. Semitransparent cirrus was found to cause a negative bias for the retrieved DSR. In tropics and subtropics the errors for DLR are smaller compared to higher latitudes. Most importantly, no significant dependencies of the satellite retrieval errors for both the DSR and the DLR on the solar elevation, near-surface humidity, cloud cover, SST and the shift of day and night were found, indicating that the CM-SAF radiation products are not subject to significant systematic errors.

Description: The influence of the external and internal structure of clouds on the incoming solar radiation cannot yet be included in parameterizations used in numerical models. Based on numerical simulations, SCHEWSKI and MACKE (2003) (Schewski-parameterization) have shown that a robust link exists between the domain averaged cloud and the domain averaged solar broadband radiation fluxes, despite the 3d nature of the cloud fields involved. The present work revisits this approach with observed cloud (cloud cover and liquid water path) and radiation (downwelling shortwave radiative flux) properties obtained from the Richard Assmann Observatory (RAO) of the German Weather Service in Lindenberg. Applying the original (model based) cloud-radiation parameterization by SCHEWSKI and MACKE (2001) to observed domain averaged cloud fields yields an overall good correlation between observed and parameterized downwelling solar radiation fluxes. However, the parameterized fluxes strongly underestimate the observations. The Schewski parameterization has been modified by removing the bias and re-adjusting the parameterization coefficients to match the observed cloud and radiation correlation. Furthermore, the empirical parameterization by ZILLMAN (1972) has been implemented for describing the clear conditions. Applying the new parameterization to an independent data set provides significant improvements. However, the accuracy remains in the order of previously used one-or two-parameter empirical cloud-radiation parameterizations. We conclude that cloud cover and liquid water path, i.e. those data that are available from large scale climate models, cannot be regarded as sufficient to describe the cloud radiative effect at the surface.

Description: The Radio Science technique enables to estimate the mass and other gravitational parameters of a solar system body from spacecraft observations very precisely. It uses the radio link between ground station and spacecraft. The frequency shift of the radio signal is proportional to the relative velocity change between spacecraft and ground station. If a spacecraft performs a close flyby at a solar system body, the velocity of the spacecraft is changed by the gravitational attraction of the body. If all other contributions on the radio signal are known, the remaining frequency change is solely due to the gravitational attraction. A least square fit can be performed on the frequency residuals to derive from it gravitational parameters. Within this thesis models were developed and merged into a software package with which it is possible to determine the orbit of a spacecraft precisely and to predict accurately the frequency to be observed at a ground station. Models for extracting the frequency shift caused by the propagation of the radio signal through the ionosphere and troposphere of the Earth were incorporated...

Description: The thesis at hand presents the results of a study of galaxies with active galactic nuclei (AGN) carried out in the radio and mm wavelength regimes at low and high angular resolutions. The studied objects cover a broad range of mechanisms responsible for powering the engines of the respective galaxies: ULIRGs (UltraLuminous Infrared Galaxies), a product of mergers between galaxies that are supposedly powered by starbursts, AGN or a mixture of the two, and QSOs (quasi-stellar objects) which are powered by AGN. Since ULIRGs and QSOs show similar properties (especially the infrared luminosities), it was proposed that they form the early and late phase of an evolutionary sequence where supposedly ULIRGs are the dust enshrouded progenitors of QSOs. As a prototypical ULIRG, Arp 220 represents an early-to-intermediate phase object in the scheme of the ULIRG-to-QSO evolution. For this object observations at multiple mm wavelengths and angular resolutions with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) are presented and analyzed. Arp 220 as a whole is studied in CO emission of the more extended structure. Furthermore, Arp 220-East is analyzed in more detail in the CO gas. Indications for emission ~10" towards the south, as well as to the north and to the west of the two nuclei, were found in the low resolution CO(1-0) maps ...

Description: Neutron stars are unique stellar remnants with extreme properties, as their density and magnetic field. Their study can be the key to a number of unanswered problems in fundamental physics and astronomy, ranging from stellar evolution to strong field gravity. One of the best ways of studying these objects is with observations at radio wavelengths, the efficiency of which can be vastly improved with the combination of data from multiple radiotelescopes. In this thesis, we use the largest European radiotelescopes for performing high quality studies of the properties of objects belonging into two separate categories of neutron stars, millisecond pulsars and magnetars. In the first part of this thesis, a complete description of the observing systems and calibration procedures for the multiple telescopes used is presented. Specifically, all observations were made with the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) telescopes, which are the Effelsberg 100m radiotelescope in Germany, the Lovell 76m radiotelescope in UK, the Westerbork 94m equivalent synthesis radiotelescope in the Netherlands and the Nanc cay 94m equivalent decimetric radiotelescope in France...

Description: The first part of the thesis is concerned with the fate of singularities in quantum cosmology. The second part addresses the derivation of predictions from quantum cosmology. In the first part, two classes of cosmological models were studied. In the first class of models, the universe evolves to or emerges from a big-rip singularity. Here, energy density, pressure and scale factor diverge after a finite amount of time. This type of singularity arises rather generically in cosmological models with phantom dark energy. For each of these phantom-field models, the corresponding scenario with ordinary scalar field was studied. The scalar field induced a big-bang singularity. The second class of models studied was dominated by a big-brake singularity. At the big brake, the universe evolution comes to a halt due to an infinite deceleration. The motivation behind this choice of models was the occurrence of a singularity at large scale factor. The major question pursued was whether these types of singularity were resolved on the quantum level. If such singularities were resolved in quantum cosmology, this would imply that quantum gravitational effects can occur in the macroscopic universe. After devising classical models that contain the respective singularity, I subjected these models to quantization which was carried out in the geometrodynamical approach. The governing equation is then the WheelerDeWitt equation ...

Description: According to current knowledge, star formation occurs preferentially in clustered environments. As a byproduct of the star formation process young stars are found to be surrounded by accretion discs that are potential birth places of planets and planetary systems. Located in the hosting cluster, these protoplanetary discs are potentially subject to stellar interactions. These interactions give rise to a fundamental question of clustered star formation: How far does the cluster environment affect the evolution of protoplanetary discs and the formation of planets? The question is addressed in the present investigation in terms of the effect of stellar encounters on stars and their disc in young clusters by combining numerical simulations of isolated star-disc encounters and stellar dynamics of young star clusters. The investigation is composed of three key aspects. First, simulations of a dynamical model of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) show that disc destruction is dominated by encounters with high-mass stars that act as gravitational foci for the lower mass stars in the cluster centre. The massive stars are thus subject to repeated encounters which can lead to a total disc destruction ...

Description: The work presented in my thesis covers two aspects of modern astronomy: Observations and instrumentation. Part I of this thesis addresses the design, the development and the qualification of the Low Resolution Spectroscopy Double Prism Assembly (LRSDPA). From an instrumentational point of view, the purpose of the LRSDPA is to make an integration of two prisms, made of Germanium and Zincsulfide, into the imaging module of the mid infrared instrument of the James Webb Space Telescope possible. My design of the LRSDPA answers to several challenging specifications, joining together available envelope, mechanical, thermal, optical and alignment aspects. Both prisms are mounted separately onto a holder via a semi-kinematic interface. The Aluminium components of the demonstration, qualification and flight model all have been manufactured at the mechanical workshop of the 1st Institute of Physics. As it is demanded of all space equipment, the function and performance of the LRSDPA has to be thoroughly demonstrated. The qualification campaign that was conducted in collaboration with the Centre Spatial de Liège, has just been brought to a successful finish. A brief introduction to the James Webb Space Telescope and its mid infrared instrument are given in Chapters 1 and 2. Chapter 3 then describes in detail the scientific capabilities, the design and the qualification of the LRSDPA. The low resolution spectroscopy mode will provide prism slit spectroscopy at a resolution of R=100 and cover the wavelength range from 5æm-10æm. This mode is particularly aiming at spectroscopic analyses of very low surface brightness objects, such as the first light-emitting galaxies that re-ionized the universe shortly after the big bang ...

Description: In this doctoral thesis, multi-frequency very long baseline interferometry observations together with multi-frequency total flux-density variability data of compact relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei are presented and analyzed. The main goal of the thesis is to investigate the physical mechanisms in relativistic jets responsible for such phenomena as the co-existence of moving and stationary jet components, jet wiggling and precession. We also aim to study the connection between the structural changes in the relativistic jets and flares in the total flux-density light curves and to find observational evidences for the appearance of a primary perturbation in the base of the jet and its further propagation. In this thesis we also investigate which physical mechanisms are responsible for periodical total flux-density variability and to search for periodicities as a sign of jet precession. In order to study the jet physics we used the multi-frequency very long baseline interferometry technique which gives the highest possible in astronomy resolution. We also compared jet structural changes with single-dish multi-frequency observations spanning more than 30 years together with optical and gamma-ray data. In particular, analysis of the long-term kinematics of two active galactic nuclei S5 1803+784 and 0605-085 shows evidence for jet precession ...

Description: The understanding of gravitational stability of galactic disks against star formation, the interplay of atomic and molecular components of the interstellar medium in a galaxy and its physical conditions, namely temperature and density, are important to gain a deeper insight into star formation. Nearby galaxies like the spiral galaxy M51 or the southern starburst galaxies NGC4945 and Circinus offer excellent opportunities to investigate these topics over a complete galactic disk or parts of the galaxy. A suitable tracer to study the molecular part of the gaseous component of galaxies is the CO molecule. It is the second most abundant molecule after H2 in the interstellar medium, its lower lying transition are excited at typical conditions of molecular clouds and the rotational transitions lie in the radio window. Thus, CO emission can penetrate throughout galactic disks and is observable from the ground. Apart from complementary data from the literature, we use observations of 12CO 21, 12CO 4--3, and 13CO 2--1 in this thesis. Additionally, the [CI] 3P1-3P0 fine structure line was observed to study the physical conditions in the central regions of galaxies. In the first part of this thesis, the nearby spiral galaxy M51 is used as a sample source to investigate the onset of star formation. CO, HI, radio-continuum, dust, and stellar maps of M51 are combined to study star formation rate, the H2/HI transition, the gas-to-dust ratios, the stability of the disk against gravitational collapse, and properties of the giant molecular clouds. Parts of the results have been published in Astronomy and Astrophysics (461,143) in 2007 and are submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2008 for publication. We use the first complete 12CO 2--1 map of M51 including the companion galaxy NGC5195 observed with HERA at the IRAM-30m telescope to trace the molecular gas. Complementary HI VLA data is used to study the atomic gas distribution and the combined total gas surface density ...

Description: This thesis is focussed on the development of optimized techniques to overcome limitations of astrophysical observations. The goal is an optimal signal estimation in noisy measurements by the consideration of underlying physical processes. This principle was applied to two different fields in astrophysics: intrumental design and analysis of polarimetric observations. In the observational part of this thesis near-infrared images of young stellar objects in the Orion constellation are studied. Limitations in resolution and sensitivity of current astronomical instruments prohibit the detailed analysis of interesting proto-stellar sources to improve theories of star formation. Radiation from the astronomical targets is not only characterized by its spectral energy, but also by polarization properties. The modeling of typical configurations of star-disk systems and the simulation of their polarization patterns helped to understand and interprete features, that were found in observations. For the case of a proto-stellar systems with both a disk and an envelope analysis techniques were developed, which are based on polarimetric effects of the scattering of light by dust. These techniques substantially improve the sensitivity and resolution and are reliable under different observing conditions. Although the obtained data did not allow investigations of substructures of the circumstellar material, the techniques are suitable to obtain constraints on star formation processes ...

Description: The central part of the Milky Way is a unique environment where an interplay of different astrophysical phenomena can be studied, starting from the physics of the interstellar medium, stellar physics and star formation, to high energetic processes associated with the accretion onto the supermassive black hole Sgr A*. In this thesis I focus onto the central parsec of the Milky Way, observed at 3.8 micrometer (L'-band) during several epochs from 2002 to 2007. This particular wavelength is interesting because one can observe the (very dense) Galactic stellar nuclear cluster, as well as the thermal component of the interstellar medium which is not visible at shorter near-infrared wavelengths. Our images revealed a high number of very narrow filamentary structures associated with the streamers of gas and dust (called mini-spiral), and sometimes also with stars. We also detected several stellar sources that are barely observable at shorter wavelengths, but well defined in the dust-dominated L'-band. The goal of this thesis was to use multi-epoch observations in order to measure motions of filamentary structures, as well as of those very red stars. The proper motion analysis allows us to come a step further in understanding the real nature of these enigmatic sources. The high-resolution observations were obtained with the NAOS/CONICA Adaptive Optics system at the ESO Very Large Telescope at Paranal, Chile. The first part of the thesis deals with the narrow dust filaments. The analysis of their morphology and proper motions shows that they are (i) probably not due to a projectional effect and (ii) are influenced by other forces than just the gravitational force of the central black hole...

Description: The meaning of my thesis was to obtain new insights about the supermassive Black Hole in the center of our Milky Way and its accretion flow. The non-thermal radio, X-ray, and near-infrared source Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is the electro-magnetic manifestation of the Black Hole. Sgr A* is a unique source to study the accretion onto a very massive compact object as it is the closest galactic nucleus. For this work I conducted observations as well as theoretical computations. The near-infrared camera CONICA in combination with the adaptive optics device NAOS at ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile were used for the observations. The goal of our group was in particular to find further evidence for a quasi-periodic signal of ~17 minutes in radiation outbursts from Sgr A* that has been reported for the first time in 2003. The radiation outbursts - most often termed `flares' - are periods of ~50 - 130 minutes in which the flux of Sgr A* in the near-infrared rises up to a factor of ten. The quasi-periodic sub-structure thereby manifests itself as sub-flares with a constant separation superimposed on the larger, underlying flare. In 2005 and 2006 we were able to detect a significant periodicity, hence the previous findings are supported ...

Description: This thesis describes the development and manufacturing of the IF circuits for two different heterodyne receivers used for sub-mm radio astronomy. The first project is the broadband 4-8 GHz IF circuitry for the mixer units for band 2 of the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared (HIFI). This instrument will be operating onboard of ESA’s Herschel space observatory. The band 2 mixer units for HIFI, built by KOSMA, implement low noise SIS mixers in a very compact, modular design. The complete IF path in the mixer units consist of the mixer block (with the SIS mixer chip) and the bias-T, which is needed to apply a bias voltage to the SIS-junction and to extract the IF signal. The detailed investigation of the IF performance of the mixer block must consider the geometric capacitances of the SIS-junction and the tuning structure as well as the inductance of the bond wires used to establish the contact between the mixer chip and the SMA output connector. The calculations presented in this thesis show that the design can be used for IF frequencies up to 12 GHz. The bias-T, which is implemented in the mixer unit, is a dedicated, new development with high performance and high reliability complying with the special requirements for a spaceborne instrument. These include the survival under high mechanical stress such as vibration during the launch and extensive thermal cycling to cryogenic temperatures during the tests of the mixer unit and the instrument.

Description: A pattern recognition and classification software was developed to detect dust devils automatically in surface images from Mars. The amount of images taken by spacecraft orbiting Mars is increasing continuously and the expenditure of time is too high to search every image for spatially and temporally highly variable features like dust devils. The pattern recognition method was therefore used to conduct a completely new kind of search for dust devils. Images from the three different Mars missions Viking, Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Express can be processed and for the first time automatically scanned for the desired objects. Viking images including dust devils were used as the database to filter unique dust devil features and the derived parameters built the feature vector. Various Classification methods have been tested resulting in a two-layer perceptron (neural network) as the best classifier. Necessary adjustments and increments complete the software so that it can be applied to Mars Global Surveyor Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC), Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) and probably coming images from future missions. It was shown that the standard dust devil is filtered and correctly classified. The two main features, the bright spot representing the dust column and the shadow, must be filterable from the background. Crater rims and hills are the most false-positive objects...

Description: The work presented here is concerned with issues related to the interplay of galaxy structure and the accretion phenomenon onto supermassive black holes (SMBH), i.e. active galactic nuclei (AGN). There is statistical evidence for a coevolution of SMBHs and the galaxy bulges they reside in. The detailed knowledge of the involved physical processes, however, is still far from being satisfactory. In order to test and improve theoretical models of how this coevolution is arising, high angular resolution observations of the host galaxies of AGN are necessary. Imaging and spectroscopy of the innermost region of galaxies have the power to reveal information on the structure, the chemical composition, and the dynamics of stars and gas in the presence of an SMBH, and allow us to separate energetic signatures related either to star formation or to the accretion onto the SMBH. Considering such observations over cosmological distances (redshifts) -- i.e. looking into the past because of the finite light-travel time -- we are also able to assess evolutionary effects on the beforementioned properties ...

Description: This thesis consists of two parts. The first part reports on the development of a fringe tracking system for LINC-NIRVANA, the near-infrared homothetic imaging camera for the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). LINC-NIRVANA allows for a coherent combination of the light entering the two primary mirrors. The fringe pattern in the focal plane is required to be stable in time to preserve the high spatial frequency information in long exposure images. Atmospheric differential piston causes the position of the fringes to change with time. A fringe tracker is a servo system that measures and corrects for atmospheric differential piston in real-time. In the first part, numerical simulations of atmospheric turbulence are used to investigate the problem of angular anisoplanatism of differential piston. The fringe tracking concept and the top-level requirements are introduced, followed by a presentation of the mechanical design of the system. This design includes a solution for a device that is capable of positioning a detector with high precision within a cryogenic environment. A fitting algorithm determines the amount of differential piston in the point-spread function of a reference target. The performance of this algorithm under different signal-to-noise conditions is investigated. First polychromatic fringes obtained with a testbed interferometer conclude the first part ...

Description: The focus of this thesis lies on the analysis and interpretation of near- and mid-infrared images of the Galactic center, with a view to improving the understanding of this region, especially at longer wavelengths. Multi-band (H, K, L and M, i.e. 1.6, 2.1, 3.78 and 4.66æm) photometry of images with a large field of view results in a new L-band calibration which eliminates anomalous color effects found in previous surveys of the Galactic center stellar cluster. The color data obtained indicates that the average extinction toward the region containing the Northern Arm and Sgr A* is lower than previously assumed, confirming the findings of Scoville et al. (2003). The stellar population of the inner few arcseconds is compared to that situated up to approximately 0.5 arcminutes out from the position of Sgr A*, revealing that the extinction does not increase significantly over the entire field of view of the ISAAC instrument (i.e. 70" x 70"). Using the large number of sources (over 500), the M-band extinction is calculated from the average L-M colors, resulting in a higher value than that of the "standard" extinction law of Rieke & Lebofsky (1985). The L-M color is shown to be a useful diagnostic tool in distinguishing hot and cool stars, when more precise methods (e.g. spectroscopy) are not available. The unusual morphology of the bright mid-infrared source IRS 3 is also discussed...

The membrane is bonded to a silicon frame in the mixer block using a flip chip process. Simulated RF coupling is compared with experimental results, showing good agreement. Receiver noise temperature measurements show uncorrected values of 1600 K at 1.4 THz and 2100 K at 1.9 THz, both at 1.5 GHz intermediate frequency.

The development of a new instrument can be as valuable as combining different datasets. I follow both approaches and developed projects which deal with new instrumentation and telescope technology, combine datasets from different wavelengths and resolutions, and incorporate recent theoretical models and predictions, which can be verified empirically. The first two of the six chapters compile astrophysical and technical background of the individual projects, which are presented in the following four chapters. While the first project (Chapter 3) deals with observations of the innermost parsec of our Galaxy, Chapter 4 presents data of the inner kpc of an active galaxy. The subjects of Chapters 5 and 6 are very luminous AGN/host systems, so-called QSOs. Whereas Chapter 5 presents global, spatially unresolved properties of SMBH/host systems, the radio jet, analyzed in the final Chapter 6, combines all size scales. It is investigated from close to its origin out to several kpc. The accretion onto the black hole of the Milky Way (Chapter 3) is extremely inefficient and the SMBH possibly interacts dominantly via tidal forces only. The next discussed system (Chapter 4) is the prototype of moderately luminous Seyfert 2 AGN, NGC 1068. Here a strong local influence of the nuclear X-ray radiation is observed. Chapter 5 deals with the possible global importance of radiative interaction between highly luminous QSO AGN and the host. The radio jet in Chapte 6 definitely shows signs of interaction with the matter of its host several kpc away from the nucleus. Chapters 3-6 include a dedicated introductory and a conclusive section, which put the results obtained in the larger astrophysical context of the observation ...

Description: A time-dependent 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model has been developed to investigate the temporal periodic interaction between Europa and the Jovian magnetosphere. The temporal variations are caused by the periodic variations of the magnetospheric plasma at Europa. As a new feature compared to existing stationary models, periodic induced magnetic fields, caused by electromagnetic induction in a potential subsurface ocean, are included. The MHD-flow problem and the internal induction problem are solved simultaneously by making use of the periodicity and the quasi-stationarity of the problem. The ideal MHD equations have been extended in order to account for the effects of Europa's neutral atmosphere and the internal periodic induced magnetic fields on the plasma interaction. At the beginning of this work, Galileo magnetometer data acquired on four passes by Europa were used to investigate whether a fixed permanent dipole moment is present in the interior of the moon in addition to the induced dipole moment previously identified. We thereby confirm the presence of an inductive response and find that the dipole coefficients of the constant intrinsic field contribute at best in a very minor way to the magnetic field. The induced magnetic fields caused by the time variable plasma interaction are calculated in an interactive process...

Description: The topic of this work is the development of Hot Electron Bolometer (HEB) mixers on freestanding membrane substrates for terahertz high resolution heterodyne receiver systems. The radio astronomy in the THz frequency spectrum is still in the beginning. At present much effort is put into the development of novel telescopes as well as in detector technologies. This work focuses on the development of THz waveguide detectors with superconducting Hot Electron Bolometer (HEB) mixers. These are primarily aimed for the use in the airborne Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) (1.9 THz) and the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope (1.4 THz) in northern Chile ...

Description: This doctoral thesis deals with crinoids from the Middle Devonian (U. Eifelian to L. Givetian) of the Eifel Synclines (western Rhenish Massif, Germany) and secondary with U. Eifelian to U. Givetian crinoids of the eastern Rhenish Massif. The study focuses on new recovered material and on material deposit in historical collections. Since the classic monographs of the early 19th century, crinoids are nearly unstudied in modern view. They are only periphery mentioned within the standard works Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology and Fossil Crinoids. The Eifel has to be characterised as the global hotspot of Middle Devonian crinoids. Because of the high diversity, selected groups of each of the four occurring Palaeozoic subclasses are studied in the course of this work: 1. The subfamily Cupressocrininae (subclass Cladida); 2. the family Hexacrinitidae (subclass Camerata); 3. the genus Stylocrinus (subclass Disparida); 4. the genus Ammonicrinus (subclass Flexibilia). Altogether, four families, eight genera and 66 species are described taxonomically. 10 new species are erected newly. Based on the excellent three-dimensional preservation of the partly autochthon conserved skeletons and their ecological-/facial response, the Eifel crinoids gave important information about the palaeodiversity, palaeobiology and palaeoecology: Regeneration processes in cupressocrinitids and hexacrinitids correspond with that features defined for recent echinoderms. Because of their important functions, the regeneration of injured arms is more perfect than those of affected cups. Hexacrinites contra balanced the general smallness of the regenerative arms by an increased pinnulated surface ...

Description: In meiner Arbeit untersuche ich die Bildung SiO2-reicher Objekte (SRO) in chondritischen Meteoriten (--〉 Chondrite).

Description: In the unglaciated areas of Antarctica, lake sediments act as archives of the regional environmental and climatic history. In most cases, the records are restricted to the Holocene. Amongst the few exceptions are lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, southern Victoria Land, which are known to have remained mostly ice-free during the Last Glacial Maximum. Within the scope of an U.S.-American-German expedition in austral summer 2002/2003, several sediment cores were recovered from the three major lakes in the Taylor Valley: lakes Fryxell, Hoare, and Bonney. In order to reconstruct the late Quaternary regional environmental and climate history, sedimentological, biogeochemical, mineralogical, and chronological investigations were conducted on the sediment sequences recovered from Lake Hoare (core Lz1020) and East Lake Bonney (core Lz1023) within the scope of this thesis. Sediment cores from Lake Hoare with a maximum length of 2.3 m mainly consist of coarse-grained material and penetrate back into the late Weichselian, when Taylor Valley was occupied by the large proglacial Lake Washburn. This lake was dammed by the advanced Ross Sea ice sheet at the valley outlet and was mainly fed by meltwater of the ice sheet. During the Pleistocene-Holocene transition, enhanced evaporation led to a significant lake level drop of Lake Washburn ...

Description: Eleven lakes and ponds and three lacustrine sediment sequences from coastal East and North-East Greenland were studied for recent hydrological and phytoplankton characteristics and for palaeolimnology, respectively. The limnological survey of lakes and ponds from Store Koldewey in summer 2003 revealed cold, monomictic, thermally unstratified, alkaline and likely oligotrophic water bodies. The diatom phytoplankton, present in six lakes and dominated by four species, varied distinctly between the lakes. The results give information about the recent status of the ecology of these High Arctic freshwater bodies. The sediment sequences were investigated for their chronology, changes in physical and biogeochemical properties, macro- and microfossils, grain-size distribution and in the case of one sequence for its elemental profiles using XRF. The palaeolimnological studies address different time intervals at various temporal resolutions with particular attention to the latitudinal differences of late Quaternary climatic and environmental changes along the coast of East and North-East Greenland. The results include information about the Late Weichselian ice-front environments on southern Store Koldewey with information about the temporal and spatial evolution of the Greenland Ice Sheet margin west of the island ...

Description: Die Västervik Region liegt an einer Haupt-Terran-Grenze im Baltischen Schild.

Description: The synformal geometry of the 1.85Ga Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC), an impact melt sheet resulting from largemagnitude meteorite impact, attests to post-impact deformation. However, in contrast to the overlying Onaping Formation, a heterolithic impact melt breccia, the SIC shows little evidence for pervasive ductile strain. This pertains in particular to its NE-lobe characterized by a curvature of about 100° in plain view. This curvature has been interpreted either as a fold or as a primary feature. In order to test these scenarios, a detailed structural analysis was conducted in the core of the NE-lobe, which consists of rocks of the Onaping Formation...

Description: Piton de la Fournaise (Réunion Island) is an active basaltic shield volcano in the south-western part of the Indian Ocean. The activity consists essentially of lava being issued from two rift zones close to the summit cone. The summit cone has been monitored since 1980 by the OVPF (Volcanological Observatory of Piton de la Fournaise). Geodetic data and radar interferometry show a systematic asymmetric pattern of deformation associated with all the N–S trending eruptive fissures (Briole et al. 1998, Sigmundsson et al. 1999). The asymmetric deformation has been interpreted in various ways. The two main models proposed are (1) eastward dip of the dykes, based on inversion of data provided by radar interferometry (Sigmundsson et al 1999), and (2) the existence of a free boundary in the east part of the volcano. The second model allows the accommodation of dykes by eastward displacements, whilst the western part of the volcano is supported by the existing Piton des Neiges (Lénat et al., 1989). However,no displacements occur along the eastern coastline of Piton de la Fournaise. The only parts of the volcano affected by deformation are the rift zones and the summit cone. Moreover, geodetic data provided by the new real-time GPS network show that there is an asymmetric deformation of the summit cone prior to eruption (Staudacher 2005). The deformation itself seems to be related to pressure increase in the magma chamber. Absence of permanent displacements during periods of rest (such as 1992–1998) (Briole et al. 1998) support this link between magmatic pressure and deformation. Here we complement previous deformation studies by the results of several numerical models that aim at understanding the internal processes resulting in deformation of the volcano...

Description: Impact of solid bodies is the most fundamental of all processes that have taken place on the terrestrial planets in our Solar system (Shoemaker 1977). On Earth, impact cratering was the dominant geologic process during the period of the early heavy bombardment until 3.8Ga. A constant asteroid impact flux exists since that time. Although deformation of the crust by meteorite impacts is now subordinate with respect to tectonics, it represents an important, but often underestimated fraction of the bulk crustal deformation. Short-term deformation during hypervelocity impact events differs in many respects from standard tectonics: Unique conditions exist at pressures above the so-called Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) of a particular mineral or rock. This state of compression is reached in a shock wave that propagates from the point of impact. Shock waves travel at supersonic velocity, heat and irreversibly deform the rock, and cause a residual motion of the material they have passed, which ultimately leads to the formation of parabolically shaped crater cavity of much larger extent than the projectile diameter. At pressure above the HEL minerals are subjected to shock metamorphism...

Description: Microscopic study is an indispensable step in the determination of the petrographic characteristics of rocks. In Cameroon just like in most developing countries, simple polarizing microscopes of the 20th Century constitute the only available material for macroscopic studies. A major difficulty encountered in the use of these instruments resides in the realisation of photographs of the different parts of the thin section that require illustrations. The technique that has been used upto now has been inefficient and unsatisfactory. Faced with this recurrent situation, we thought of setting up a new, semi-modern, practical and very economical technique for photographing the thin section.

Description: Intense seismicity and intensely developed active and ancient fault systems are common to the Aegean Region. Extending/ thinning crust involves a complex interplay of (1) Gulf of Corinth riftexpansion, (2) west- and south-ward retreat of the Hellenic Trench, (3) westward impingement of the Anatolian Platen, and/or (4) propagation of the Anatolian Fault system into the Aegean. New geological/structural investigations on Kea (also known as Tzia), in the Western Cyclades reveal a low angle crustal-scale, detachment-type ductile shear zone probably formed during Miocene extension and thinning of the continental crust...

Application of basic principles of rock mechanics, and numerical simulations of deformation and fluid flow processes provide fundamental insights to Proterozoic hydrothermal mineralization atMount Isa, Australia. The rheology of layered meta-sedimentary rocks, and the orientation and position of these layered rocks relative to major fault systems were the key controls on ore deposition...

Description: Most asteroids strike their target at an oblique angle (Pierazzo & Melosh 2000). The common criterion for identifying craters formed by an oblique impact is the pattern of the ejecta blanket. On Earth, however, ejecta blankets are rarely preserved and morphological, structural, geophysical as well as depositional criteria were used to infer an oblique impact (e.g. for Chicxulub, Schultz & D’Hondt 1996, Ries- Steinheim, Stöffler et al. 2003, Mjölnir & Tsikalas 2005). However, the significance of such criteria in predicting impact angle or direction is a matter of debate (c.f. Schultz & Anderson, 1996, Ekholm & Melosh 2001). Particularly, it is not yet known whether there is an influence of the impact angle on the displacement field during the collapse of large transient cavities, and thus, the final crater. For most impact angles, the shape of the final crater is controlled by its size. At a critical diameter (ca. 2–5 km on Earth), simple bowl shaped craters are getting gravitationally unstable and collapse to form complex craters, with a flat floor and a terraced rim (Melosh 1989). During collapse, the crater floor rises to form a central uplift, that may or may not be visible as a central peak, or, when the peak in turn collapses, as a peak ring at yet larger diameters.

Description: The 1.85 Ga Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) in central Ontario is now widely considered to be the erosional remnant of a deformed paleo-horizontal impact melt sheet, about 2.5 km in thickness. Deformed impact melt breccias of the Onaping Formation and postimpact metasedimentary rocks overlie the layered SIC, which in turn rests on shocked Archean basement and Paleoproterozoic cover rocks. The main mass of the Igneous Complex is subdivided from top to bottom into granophyre, quartz-gabbro and norite layers. Previous workers considered noncylindrical folding and NW-directed reverse faulting as the main structural processes that formed the asymmetric, syn-formal geometry of the SIC apparent in map view and seismic section. Structural studies support this model in the southern part of the impact structure, where greenschist-facies metamorphic tectonites of the South Range Shear Zone (SRSZ) accomplished structural uplift of the southern SIC by NW-directed reverse shearing. However, little evidence for pervasive ductile strain has been reported from the weakly metamorphosed eastern part of the SIC, the East Range, which is characterised by steep basal dips and maximal curvature in plan view. The objective of this study is to assess the structural inventory of the East Range in terms of post-emplacement deformation mechanisms. Our interpretation is based on published and newly acquired structural data. Planar mineral shape fabrics of cumulate plagioclase and pyroxene are developed in the intermediate quartz-gabbro and lower norite layers of the southern East Range SIC. Microstructures show little intracrystalline deformation in quartz. Euhedral cumulate plagioclase retains an angular outline indicating magmatic mineral fabric development. This magmatic foliation is concordant to SIC contacts or large-scale discontinuities in their vicinity (Fig. 1). Magmatic fabrics are observed rarely in the northern portion of the East Range. Here, tectonic foliations and S–C fabrics are developed sporadically at, and concordant to, brittle structures striking N–S. A weak tectonic foliation defined by chlorite that replaces magmatic minerals is developed in the upper granophyric SIC of the NE-lobe that connects the SIC’s North and East Ranges via a 105° arc. This foliation grades into a shape-preferred orientation of primary, i.e., magmatic, mafic minerals observed in the lower granophyre and underlying layers of the SIC. Mineral fabrics observed in the NE-lobe SIC are concordant to metamorphic foliations developed in the overlying Onaping Formation breccias. Both foliations strike parallel to the NE-Lobe’s acute bisectrix and, thus, display an axial-planar geometry typical for fabrics formed in the core of a buckle fold (Fig. 1). Brittle structures including centimetre-scale shear-fractures to kilometre-scale faultzones are observed in the eastern SIC and its host rocks. Largescale faults striking N–S cut the NElobe’s eastern limb causing variable magnitudes of strike separation of SIC contacts. Centimetre- to metrescale, brittle faults and chlorite-filled brittle-ductile shear-zones occur pervasively in the eastern SIC, often causing centimetre-scale offset of markers. Microstructures from first-order fault-zones indicate deformation at, and below, greenschist-facies metamorphic conditions. The concordance of magmatic and tectonic mineral shape fabrics in the NElobe indicates progressive deformation of the SIC during cooling from the magmatic state to lower greenschistfacies metamorphic conditions. Synmagmatic deformation of the SIC suggests that it was emplaced during ongoing orogenic deformation. Furthermore, maximum principal stress directions inferred from inversion of faultslip data collected in the Onaping Formation are orthogonal to metamorphic foliation surfaces at the same localities. This points to a similar deformation regime in the Onaping Formation during ductile and brittle deformation. The concordance of magmatic, metamorphic and brittle fabrics is explained best by a single progressive deformation event that was active while the SIC cooled and solidified. The lack of pervasive ductile deformation fabrics in the East Range SIC can be explained by rapid cooling of the impact melt sheet (within 100–500 ka) with respect to natural tectonic strain rates. While the geometry of mineral fabrics in the study area is compatible with large-scale, non-cylindrical folding, the low levels of ductile deformation suggest that shape-change of the eastern SIC has been accomplished mainly by discontinuous deformation. This deformation mechanism may have accomplished bulk NW-SE shortening that was accommodated by reverse shearing within the SRSZ, resulting in large strike separations of SIC contacts observed in the western part of the impact structure. By contrast, the eastern SIC may have accomplished such shortening by brittleductile, non-cylindrical folding at the eastern terminus of the SRSZ. The complex post-impact deformation pattern of the central Sudbury Structure results from impact into an active orogen.

Description: The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) can serve as a good indicator of strain in deformed carbonate rocks with diamagnetic susceptibility (Owens and Rutter 1978; de Wall 2000). However, the magnetic fabric due to the diamagnetic carbonate minerals is usually very weak and interpretation of the AMS in these rocks is often complicated by the presence of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases which overprint the diamagnetic subfabric. For this reason contributions from ferromagnetic and paramagnetic minerals to the AMS should be separated for a reliable interpretation of the AMS. Ferromagnetic contributions to the AMS can be separated by high-field measurements, using a torque magnetometer (Martin- Hernandez and Hirt 2001). The remaining paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions can be discriminated by their different temperature dependencies. The paramagnetic susceptibility increases as an inverse function of temperature, whereas the diamagnetic part remains constant. Altogether, AMS measurements at high fields and low temperatures allow for the discrimination of all three subfabrics. Test measurements with the high-field torque magnetometer at liquid nitrogen temperature were performed. It is possible to keep the specimens at low temperature over the measurement period using a cryostat. The main problem is the suppression of mechanical disturbances during the measurement so that the sensitivity of the instrument is retained. The torque of paramagnetic minerals increases strongly at low temperature which results in an amplification of the paramagnetic subfabric. The quantitative separation of diamagnetic and paramagnetic subfabric is under investigation. The result is promising when there is a significant diamagnetic signal.

Description: Fission-track (FT) data always depend on the thermal history of a 3-D geological complex. Therefore it is expedient to display FT data sets in 3-D models. Such a model in which tectonic, sedimentological and hydrological features are combined can greatly improve the interpretation of the palaeo-thermal pattern derived from FT analyses. Since 1988 several FT studies have been conducted in the Black Forest (BF) (Michalski 1988, Wyss 2000, Timar- Geng et al. 2004, 2005). Timar-Geng et al. (2006) analyse the crystalline basement and the Permian Rotliegend beneath the Mesozoic units in the Tabular Jura (TJ) east of Basel, Switzerland, using samples taken from the three Nagra boreholes at Kaisten, Riniken and Leuggern. In particular Timar-Geng et al. (2005, 2006) characterise the thermal history of this pre-Mesozoic basement. For the BF they estimate at least one heating phase during the lower and middle Mesozoic while similar heating could not be observed in northern Switzerland. However, the FT-data in both regions show moderate to rapid cooling during the Cretaceous and Lower Eocene, which was followed by an Upper Eocene heating event. The software package GOCAD (Geological Objects Computer-Aided Design) was used to build a digital elevation model (DEM), which provide a new detailed view of these FT data sets. The model is located about 20 km east of Basel, Switzerland, and extends over an area of about 21km by 24 km and spans a vertical height difference of about 2 km. The data sets described above along with two additional FT analyses from the Buntsandstein which lies directly on the BF crystalline, were compiled and plotted at their topographic heights in the DEM. The FT central-ages (Galbraith & Laslett 1993) of this region range between 25 ± 2Ma and 98 ± 6.5 Ma. The topographic positions extend between −1412m at the Borehole Riniken and 960m in the BF with mean sea level as a reference. FT central-age isochron surfaces were drawn in order to visualize the thermal evolution within the model range. Because the FT central-ages also correspond to a closure temperature, these surfaces can also be considered an isotherm. The FT closure temperature of apatite is about 90±30°C (Laslett et al. 1987). Therefore each surface shows the position and shape of the ca. 90°C isotherm of a specific age. This 3-D model points out an important difference in the thermal evolution of the BF und the TJ. The vertical distance between the isothermal surfaces increases from north to south. Between 90Ma and 60Ma the ca. 90°C isotherm drops at the Kaisten borehole by 1000m while in the same time span in the BF a lowering of the same isotherm by 300m can be observed. In the eastern part of the model this feature is not as marked as in the west but nevertheless it is observable. To explain this entirely different thermal evolution it is necessary to turn to the tectonic and other geological features of the region. South of the exposed BF crystalline and beneath the TJ there lies an old Variscan structure: the Permo-Carboniferous trough (PCT). This trough strikes in WSWENE direction and extends from Lake Constance to the Bresse Graben and contains up to 6000m of Palaeozoic sediments. Additionally, some Variscan fault structures strike in WNW–ESE direction and cut both the BF an the PCT, for example the Eggberg Fault and the Vorwald Fault. Beside the tectonic structures the hydrological characteristics played an important role during the palaeo-thermal evolution. Circulating hot fluids controlled the thermal pattern. Variscan faults were often reactivated during the Mesozoic (e.g. Wetzel et al. 2003) and also during the formation of the Upper Rhine Graben. (e.g. Illies 1967) These faults are the major water-conducting features in the crystalline basement of the BF, joints and fracture networks are tributaries. Below the aquifers within the Mesozoic of the TJ, the PCT trough sediments predominantly act as an aquitard. Only the border faults of the trough were important pathways for fluids (Thury 1994). Considering the Mesozoic sedimentological history of the region it is unlikely that fault movements are responsible for the different palaeo-thermal pattern of the BF and the TJ. Only different magnitudes of heat flow caused by hydrothermal circulating fluids can explain the ‘warm’ BF crystalline in comparison to the ‘cold’ basement of the TJ at the transition between the Mesozoic and Tertiary.

Description: Regional strains in tectonically active volcanic provinces may have a profound influence on the mode of collapse caldera formation. Conversely, the deformation pattern, more specifically, the symmetry of plan-view strain fields imparted to caldera floors may assist in elucidating the regional deformation active during caldera formation. The symmetry of plan-view strain fields is chiefly controlled by the mode of floor subsidence, particularly whether subsidence is uniform, symmetric or asymmetric, portraying collapse mechanisms known respectively as plate, downsag and trapdoor. Plate and downsag subsidence generates centro-symmetric strain fields characterized by radial and concentric discontinuities and subvolcanic dikes. Such strain fields appear to develop preferably where magma pressure controls collapse. By contrast, rectilinear horizontal strain fields form under unidirectional stretching and generate normal faults and subvolcanic dikes transverse to the stretching direction. Rectilinear strain fields are typical for trapdoor subsidence but also for straight orogenic belts and suggests that the formation of both may be related. This was tested for six central Andean collapse calderas that formed between 10.5 and 2Ma and are located on prominent NW–SE striking fault zones. A combined geochronological and structural analysis of the Miocene Negra Muerta Caldera in particular was designed to better understand caldera formation associated with the prominent Olacapato – El Toro Fault Zone...

Description: The Upper Rhine Graben forms the major segment of the Cenozoic Rift system of Western Europe. Although the rift was the target of many seismic and geological investigations, the style of lithospheric extension below the inferred faults, the depth to detachment, and the amounts of horizontal extension and lateral translation are still being debated. In this study, the date base to the Upper Rhine Graben was subjected to a finite element approach in order to include thermomechanical processes of the lithosphere as well as erosion and sedimentation. The study concentrated on the consequences of extension and lateral translational events on the structure and evolution in terms of basin geometry, sediment layer thicknesses, Moho elevation, and shoulder uplift on a lithospheric scale. The numerical approach was three dimensional in order to incorporate the lateral crustal heterogenities in the Upper Rhine area and the varying ambient stress field...

Description: Der Ság-hegy Vulkan Komplex befindet sich in dem Vulkanfeld der Kleinen Ungarischen Tiefebene.

Description: Geology as a science has an important visual component and the knowledge of any geologist is deeply linked to visual experience of rock outcrops, thin sections and analytical images. One of the shortcomings of most geological images such as maps, cross sections and outcrop photographs is that they are 2D, while processes geologists are interested in are typically occurring in 3D space. The 3D geometry of faults, fractures and joints is crucial to quantify geological processes related to fracture mechanics, such as hydrothermal mineralization and ground water flow, but also geotechnical problems such as rock mass stability. A number of studies have shown that some geological structures can be described with a scale invariant, fractal distribution. So far these observations on which these findings are based were restricted to one and two dimensions and has been difficult to obtain a full spatial geometric picture of fracture sets from rock outcrops, because much of the rock is not directly accessible. However, without taking into account the spatial distribution of geological structures the true geometry of joint patterns cannot be fully described and scaling laws, fractal or not, cannot be derived. We present images of joint patterns based on datasets acquired by digital photographs which are processed to three dimensional images using the photogrammetry software Siro3D. This technique allows to obtain a highly accurate 3D picture of the visible outcrop. The spatial pattern of joints in nature is investigated using the software SiroJoint. For the analysis of joint systems a large data set was collected from the Heavitree Quarzite at Ormiston Gorge, near Alice Springs. The Heavitree Quartzite is fragmented by a spectacularly regular three-dimensional joint pattern, which is repeated at different scales and therefore represents a perfect laboratory for our investigations (Hobbs 1993). Siro3D generates a spatially fully referenced 3D image from overlapping digital images, such that each pixel of the image is assigned spatial coordinates. The software SiroJoint routinely constructs planes from the intersection of the rock-face with the linear trace of planar features (Poropat 2001). It provides stereographic plots of structural elements and additionally measures joint persistence, area, and joint spacing. Our measurements allow to analyse geometrical scaling relationships of joint sets with high accuracy and will help explore the character of their 3D complexity. Several hundred joint planes were defined with SiroJoint in an Ormiston Gorge outcrop. Three different joint sets can be distinguished. Joint set one and two are characterized by steeply inclined planes with joint spacings ranging between 2 cm to 40 cm and 2 cm to 10m respectively. Both joints sets depict a power law distribution in joint spacing/frequency plots. The third set is defined by a subhorizontal orientation. It shows a very regular spacing in the meter scale and lacks an exponential distribution. We intend to use the results as a basis to compare observed fracture pattern with those generated by computational methods like Iterated Function Systems. This might help to understand how physical rock properties influence the spatial complexity of fracture systems and develop constitutive scaling relationships for certain rock types.

Description: Weather and climate in West Africa are determined by the pronounced contrast between tropical, moist air masses over the Gulf of Guinea in the south and the dry desert climate over the Sahara in the north. The sharp border between the two air masses exhibits a pronounced meridional annual cycle and follows the path of the sun northward. This circulation system is called "West African monsoon". In the past, the knowledge about the factors that control the monsoon and its strength was limited due to the small number of high-quality observations. Therefore, little is known about the reasons for the significant decline of annual rainfall over the Sahel area during the past 40 years which represents the most pronounced climatic signal worldwide. During the past few years, intensive atmospheric observations were performed in the framework of the international project "African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses" (AMMA) in order to obtain high-quality data and to improve the process understanding. This work gathered and analyzed ground-based remote sensing observations which were performed in Benin and Niger during the AMMA field campaigns. These data give an insight into diurnal and annual cycles of atmospheric parameters, such as water vapor, temperature profiles, cloud cover, cloud liquid water content, or wind with a temporal resolution never reached before. Particular attention is paid to the atmospheric water which is recognized to be a critical parameter for many other atmospheric variables, e.g. the vertical temperature distribution, the long-wave radiation balance, and many more ...

Description: The distribution of hydrometeors is highly variable in space and time, since it is the result of a complex chain of processes with scales from microphysical (1e-6 m) to synoptical (1e3 m). It is a challenging task to observe these highly variable atmospheric constituents on a global scale with a temporal and spatial resolution sufficient for numerical weather prediction (NWP) and hydrological purposes. This study investigates the potential of the millimeter- and submillimeter-wavelength range on space-borne sensors for hydrometeor and surface precipitation rate observations. The approach is based on simulations with cloud resolving models (CRMs) coupled to a radiative transfer (RT) model. The simulations are performed for mid-latitude cases covering a broad band of precipitation events such as heavy convective and light stratiform winter precipitation. Realistic atmospheric conditions were simulated with two mesoscale CRMs: the Meso-scale NonHydrostatic model (Meso-NH) on a 10 km and the COSMO-DE (COnsortium for Small-scale MOdeling-DEutschland) on a 2.8 km horizontal resolution. When calculating brightness temperatures for satellite observations with the one-dimensional radiative transfer model MWMOD (MicroWave MODel), the detailed cloud microphysics and the three-dimensional fields of temperature, humidity, and pressure of the CRMs are considered in the calculation of the interaction parameters ...

Description: Dense cold molecular clouds reckoned to be stellar nurseries are the scene of an extreme molecular deuteration. Despite the cosmic D/H ratio of 10^{-5}, molecular species in prestellar cores are observed to contain nearly as much deuterium as hydrogen. This astonishing deuterium enrichment promoted by low temperatures is the work of H3+. It is the key species which unlocks the deuterium from its HD reservoir via reactions like H3+ + HD -〉 H2D+ + H_2 and drags it further to other species in successive reactions. For this reason, the H3+ + H2 isotopic system is outstandingly critical for the astrochemistry of cold environments. However, its understanding is yet incomplete and insufficient. This thesis thus focuses on the H3+ + H2 isotopic system from a theoretical, experimental and astronomical point of view giving a particular look into the role of nuclear spins...

Description: Grain boundary migration during dynamic recrystallization of quartz results in grain boundary suturing of various extent. The geometry of the sutured boundaries is affected not only by temperature, strain rate, finite strain and differential stress, but also by internal properties such as the defect distribution and crystallographic orientations. Consequently, the grain boundary geometry may provide information about these conditions and properties. In continuation of a previous study (Kuntcheva et al.) the complete crystallographic orientation of quartz grain boundaries was measured, based on a combination of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and universal-stage (U-stage) measurements. For this purpose a sample of granite from the northern Aar Massif (Central Alps, Switzerland) was taken, deformed at temperatures up to 300–350°C at the end of the Lepontine event of the Alpine Orogenesis...

Description: The Austroalpine microplate traces the Alpine collision event between the Africa-related southern Alpine realm and the European continent. The southern margin of this microplate, the basement to the north of Meran (including Texel unit and Schneeberg Zug) is characterized by regional eo-Alpine high-pressure metamorphism (Hoinkes & Thöni, 1987). PT conditions decrease from SE (Texel unit) to the pre-alpine basement in the NW. The HP Rocks were exhumed within a ca. 15km broad SW-NE-striking, NWdipping high strain zone (Sölva et al. 2001). The high-pressure Texel crystalline is tectonically underlain by the Campo unit in the south and overlain by the Ötztal-Stubai Basement in the north(west). The Schneeberg Zug forms an up to 5km thick shear zone at its base, representing the study area. It shows normal-sense kinematics and separates pre-Alpine basement rocks in the hanging wall from high-pressure rocks in the footwall, the Texel unit. These were emplaced on top of pre-Alpine basement rocks (Campo unit) by an eo-Alpine ductile thrust. Lithologically the western termination of the Schneeberg Zug comprises characteristic garnet micaschists, marble layers, amphibolites, quartzites, hornblende-garben-schists and calcschists. These lithologies are called Bunte Serie (Mauracher, 1981) and differ from the polyphase adjacent Texel unit and the polymetamorphic basement rocks in the hanging wall due to their lithological content and their monometamorphic evolution. Petrological and geochronological investigations on the eastern continuation of these characteristic metapelitic rocks evidence the time of garnet growth during D1 close to the Cretaceous pressure peak. Sm-Nd isochron data of these continuously zoned garnets yielded crystallization ages between 90 and 95 Ma. Preliminary structural investigations yielded four major deformation events: D1 produced a compositional layering and a mylonitic foliation; generally this ductile deformation in the northwestern portion of the Schneeberg Zug is characterized by contemporaneous shearing and folding forming isoclinal folds with axes oriented parallel to the NW–SE plunging stretching lineation. Deformation stage D2 formed tight folds with steep NW to WSW plunging axes and NW to W dipping axial planes, which refold the D1 related structures. Deformation stage D3 is characterized by a crenulation with NW-plunging axes and NW-dipping axial planes. Lower greenschist-facies shear-zones dipping to the W and with shear sense top to W– WNW represent the last ductile event. They crosscut the older structural inventory. Brittle deformation evidences normal faulting reactivating the NW dipping main foliation as well as related dextral strike slip movement. Geochronological data and structural investigations indicate a continuous eo- Alpine tectono-metamorphic evolution, which started at high grade conditions homogenously distributed over the whole shear zone. With decreasing temperature conditions the deformation progressively partitioned into distinct shear zones.

Description: Basement-cover-interfaces are important crustal boundaries. In many cases they act as detachment horizons. Criteria like pre-erosional basement characteristics, intensity of palaeoweathering and post-erosional processes during burial stage lead to a huge variety of observable alteration and fabric features of basement-cover-interfaces, which may influence the shear-strength. Unconformity-parallel planar fabrics in the weathering profile were facilitated by palaeo-alteration and later processes (Angerer 2005 unpubl. data). Such fabrics may be a factor for lowering the shear-strength (e.g. Wintsch et al. 1995). The probably ubiquitous existence of those fabrics at basement-coverinterfaces is investigated in case studies by means of AMS-fabric analysis, which is a sensitive indicator of rock fabric changes. The present case study is based on sections from two drill cores across the erosional unconformity between Fennoscandian Granite (Revsund) and Cambrian Gärdsjön Fm. (Långviken SGU 73007 and Hara 79002) (petrographic descriptions in Gee, 1978 and Gee et al. 1982).

Description: The suevitic Onaping Formation overlies the layered Main Mass of the 1.85Ga Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) of the Sudbury Impact Structure, Ontario. The Formation consists of four Members, namely from top to bottom, the Black, the Green, the Gray and the Basal. Post-impact NWSE shortening during the Penokean Orogeny (ca. 1.9–1.75 Ga) affected the Onaping Formation and led to the lobate shape of the SIC in plan view. In order to investigate the possible fold origin of the NE-lobe of the SIC, a field-based structural analysis of the Onaping Formation was conducted in the Frenchman Lake area. The analysis is based on structural measurements at 580 stations and encompasses the orientation of mineral shape fabrics as well as their intensity. In addition to these quantities, lithological variation and metamorphic overprint of the Onaping Formation was examined. Special attention was paid thereby to the Green Member since previous workers stated that it forms a continuous unit at the base of the Black Member...

Description: Als Teil des International Continental Drilling Projects (ICDP), wurde von März bis September 1999 im Rahmen des Hawai’i Scientific Drilling Projects (HSDP) die etwa 3109m tiefe HSDP-2 Bohrung in der Nähe von Hilo auf Big Island, Hawai’i niedergebracht. Antares GmbH (Stuhr, Germany) eingesetzt.

Description: Dykes are magma-driven extension fractures and the main conduits for magma in volcanic eruptions. To understand the mechanics of dyke emplacement is thus essential to assess volcanic hazards. To improve the understanding of the processes of dyke initiation from shallow magma chambers and dyke propagation through a mechanicallylayered crust, field measurements and observations from Tenerife (Canary Islands) are used and compared with the results from numerical models. Careful studies of 550 dykes in three profiles in the Anaga massif (Tenerife) include measurements of dyke geometry and orientation. The results of these measurements show that dykes have been injected from a deep-seated reservoir during the shield-building phase. Furthermore, the dyke attitudes agree with the main axial trends of Tenerife that are preserved in the old massifs of Teno, Anaga, and Roque del Conde...

Description: The North Equatorial Panafrican belt is constituted by orthogneissified metamorphic and magmatic sets linked to tectonometamorphic events of the neoproterozoic orogeny. This belt whose formations are situated in the North of the congo craton is divided into three distinct geodynamic domains: a southern domain, a northern domain and a central domain. The deformation and metamorphism relationships are a function of the different geodynamic domains of the belt. The central domains, to which belongs the Banefo region, is affected by large strike-slip faults among which is the central cameroonian shear zone. This domain is marked out by numerous syntectonic granitoids. At Banefo (NE Bafoussam, West Cameroon), those massifs are mainly constituted by mylotinised orthogneisses and granites of various degrees. The country rock is made up of gneiss and amphibolite. In the Banefo massifs, the orthogneiss is the least deformed petrographic unit. It shows a heterogranular granoblastic texture with a mineral assemblage formed by quartz, K-feldspars, biotite, etc., within the orthogneiss, remains of magmatic fluidality can still be observed marked by feldspar megacrystal. Field observations reveal a net progression of the intensity of deformation of orthogeisses to ultramylotinised granites having an identical chemical composition as the orthogneisses...

Description: The geothermal field at Reykjanes peninsula is located at the boundary where the submarine Reykjanes Ridge passes over into the rift zone of southwestern Iceland. The geothermal field coincides with a magnetic low in the aeromagnetic anomaly map and is situated within a dense NE–SW fissure and fault zone. Surface geology is characterized by different historic fissure eruptions (youngest from 1226AD), shield lava (12.5–14.5 ka) and intercalated pillow basalt–hyaloclastite ridges probably formed during the last glacial episode (14.5–20 ka). During a field magnetic study in the vicinity of the geothermal field in summer 2005 different volcanic rock units have been sampled to correlate rock magnetic and magneto-mineralogical properties with magnetic field intensity. Additionally, measurements on a dense dolerite intrusion, recovered from the RN–19 borehole (2245–2248m depth) in May 2005 within the frame of IDDP, should shed light on the influence of crustal rocks on the total magnetic field intensity. Generally, the natural remanent magnetization and magnetic susceptibility, measured on rock specimen, is high, ranging between 2.5 and 33.6Am−1 and 2–37 ×10−3 SI, respectively...

Description: Structural analysis of Paleozoic Middle and Upper Austroalpine (MAA, UAA) units of the Gurktal Nappe Complex (GNC) in combination with electron microprobe analyses of multiphase garnets reveal a complex Variscan and Alpidic tectonometamorphic evolution of the GNC. Our study is focussed on the UAA ‘Murau Nappe’ and its tectonic transition to the MAA respectively to the overlying UAA Stolzalpen Nappe. The ‘Murau Nappe’ may rather be interpreted as a major zone of imbricate thrust slices of the underlying and overlying units than a distinct nappe. The results of our study lead to a reinterpretation of the ‘Murau Nappe’ as a major shear zone generated during the Eo-Alpine thrusting of the Stolzalpen Nappe over the MAA. Concerning the central GNC we conclude, that the genetic term ‘Murau Nappe’ for the lower UAA unit between MAA and Stolzalpen Nappe is not valid. Instead, its reinterpretation as a major shear zone (‘Murau shear zone’), genetically belonging to the MAA, generated during Eo-Alpine overthrusting of the Stolzalpen Nappe, is favoured. The Mesozoic Stangalm unit is interpreted as a local sequence imbricated during the northward movement of the MAA units.

Description: Structural analysts are often faced with the problem of identifying prominent structural discontinuities covered by post-tectonic sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Gravity fields are often used to delineate the trace of buried discontinuities but are frequently found to be too crude to localize discontinuities adequately. Here, we introduce the importance of dip curvature of the isostatic residual gravity for identifying upper-crustal discontinuities. The relationship between Bouguer gravity, isostatic residual gravity and its dip curvature, first-order structural elements and distribution of Neogene volcanic rocks was examined in the central Andean plateau, more specifically, the southern Altiplano and the Puna...

Die Oberen Decken (i.w.

Description: The EZ is an approximately 20km long and 2–3km wide coherent unit of the Tauern Window in the Eastern Alps. It is sandwiched between the Venedigerand the Glockner Nappe. While rocks in the EZ experienced HP metamorphic conditions (24 kbar/650°C), rocks from the underlying Venediger Nappe and the overlying Glockner Nappe only record lower alpine metamorphic conditions with peak pressures not exceeding 10 and 8 kbar, respectively. While metamorphism in the EZ is well dated with an average age of 31.5±0.7Ma (Glodny et al. 2005) the final emplacement of these different nappes is still under debate. Our Rb-Sr-data indicate that top-N thrusting at the base and large-scale folding of the EZ was coeval with sinistral strike-slip faulting at its upper boundary and eclogite-facies metamorphism in the EZ. The data also indicate that today’s nappe architecture must have been established in less than 2Ma after the eclogite facies metamorphism in the EZ. Very fast exhumation of the EZ was accomplished in a transpressional setting, which might explain why the exposed EZ is such a small unit.

Description: During impact, rocks at the surface and accessible depths encounter extreme conditions. The hydrostatic component of the shock wave-associatedstress, the so-called shock pressure, canreach several tens of GPa in the central part of the structure. The shock crust and its comprehensive experimental calibration. Two distinct types of quartz microstructure in charnockitic target rocks and quartz veins of the Charlevoix impact structure are compared and contrasted in order to distinguish shock-induced microstructures that indicate a high hydrostatic stress component of the shock wave-associated stress from those that indicate a high deviatoric component, as well as associated microstructures that were generated during post-shock relaxation...

Description: The tectonic history of the Kamchatka Peninsula is dominated by continuous accumulation and amalgamation of terranes with different origins, which were delivered by convergence between the Pacific plate and in former times, the Kula plate against Eurasia (Freitag, 2002). The Kronotsky and Cape Kamchatka Peninsulas show that the collision of terranes and the resulting tectonics are still important for major parts of East-Kamchatka. While the collision of the Kronotsky Peninsula is sorely influenced by the convergence of the Pacific plate, the Cape Kamchatka Peninsula is affected by the collision of the Aleutian Arc with Kamchatka, what gives the opportunity to compare two different processes that resulted in the amalgamation of terranes to Kamchatka.

Description: The radiogeic 4He isotope is continuously forming in the lithosphere mainly by the alpha-decay of U, Th and Sm. This decay process was discovered already at the beginning of the 20th century, and the first U/He dating was made by Rutherford (1905). Although his result indicated that the dimensions of the Earth’s history ranges to millions of years, the U/He method was used only scarcely later on because the minerals are usually not closed to the decay product. The helium is extremely mobile and diffuse through the crystal lattices. Thus, the apparent U/He ages were always younger than the radiometric ages determined by other isotope geochronometers like U/Pb, Rb/Sr or K/Ar. The current renaissance of the method has been started at the end of eighties, when H. Lippolt, P. Zeitler, K. Farley and their co-workers have described the parameters of diffusion of some uraniumbearing minerals (e.g. Lippolt & Weigel 1987, Zeitler et al. 1987). It turned out that the (U-Th)/He apparent ages do carry meaningful geological information. The closure temperature of the most widely used apatite-He system is around 70°C. Thus, by the usage of this mineral/method pair it became possible to date low-temperature geological processes, which were undatable by other geochronometers...

Description: In the framework of this PhD thesis, the study of the distribution of an extended mass close to the super-massive black hole (SMBH) at the centre of our Galaxy is addressed using observational data and theoretical modelling. The main emphasize is on establishing a distinction between the fraction of dark mass present in the form of a black hole and that in an extended form. Despite the significant observational and theoretical progress in the understanding of SMBHs in the last ten years, the formation of SMBHs and the interplay with their host galaxy are still poorly understood. The work presented here extends our understanding of the dynamics in the vicinity of the SMBH. Already in 1974, it was proposed that the radio source SgrA* could be a SMBH. With observations during the following years, it became more clear that the centre of our Galaxy hides an amount of dark mass close to 3 million solar masses. However, the strongest evidence for the existence of a SMBH, was only after it became possible to trace for the first time stellar orbits of fast moving stars, the so-called S-stars, around SgrA*. This was achievable using the SHARP near-infrared speckle camera at la Silla in Chile as well as the near-infrared camera NAOS/CONICA at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal in Chile.

Description: In this thesis the design and analysis of SIS-mixers (SIS: superconductor-isolator-superconductor) for the use as low-noise and broad-band detectors in the submm-region for astronomical observations is described. The SIS-mixers have been developed for the frequency band 2 (636-802 GHz) of the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared (HIFI) on ESA’s space-observatory Herschel. The required performance baseline has been defined by the HIFI-consortium in terms of the estimated noise temperature contribution of the mixer to be 110 K at 636 GHz and 150 K at 802 GHz. In the frequency region between 80 GHz and 900 GHz Heterodyne SIS mixers are established as the best devices for low noise mixing with a high spectral resolution (mixing of the signal radiation with local oscillator, LO). For the HIFI band 2 mixers, the technology of Nb/Al-Al2O3/Nb-junctions has been used with junction areas of 0.5-1.0 um2, a target value for the current density jc of 15 kA/cm2 and a gap-voltage of 2.75-2.77 mV. For the compensation of the SIS-junction’s intrinsic capacitance and the optimized power coupling to the tunnel junction, two types of matching circuits have been theoretically modelled and experimentally studied: (1) three-step transformer single junction devices and (2) double-junction devices. This has been done for two material combinations: for an all-superconductive micro strip NbTiN/SiO2/Nb, and for the superconductor/normal-conductor combination NbTiN/SiO2/Al...
