Description:
Rearing experiments on Sepiola affinis 1, in different experimental conditions, have confirmed the results previously obtained with several species of Sepiola and Sepietta, particularly the independence of growth from temperature. Under «normal» conditions, development from hatching to reproduction lasts about 5-6 months; adding embryonic development, which covers 1 Yz to 3 months according to
temperature, the complete cycle -of the sub-family SEPIOLINAE would cover 6 to 9 months. The reproductive cycle of HETEROTEUTHINAE, the only pelagic sepiolids, is probably similar; in RosSIINAE the cycle covers one year at least.
Experiments with Sepio/a affinis showed that the absence of a day-night cycle (continuous light) does not prevent sexual maturation, but delays spawning. Low food intake delays sexual maturation which is apparently linked to growth
