    Beschreibung: We first characterize strain solitary waves propagating in a fluid-filled membrane tube when the fluid is stationary prior to wave propagation and the tube is also subjected to a finite stretch. We consider the parameter regime where all traveling waves admitted by the linearized governing equations have nonzero speed. Solitary waves are viewed as waves of finite amplitude that bifurcate from the quiescent state of the system with the wave speed playing the role of the bifurcation parameter. Evolution of the bifurcation diagram with respect to the pre-stretch is clarified. We then study the stability of solitary waves for a representative case that is likely of most interest in applications, the case in which solitary waves exist with speed c lying in the interval $$[0, c_1)$$ [ 0 , c 1 ) where $$c_1$$ c 1 is the bifurcation value of c, and the wave amplitude is a decreasing function of speed. It is shown that there exists an intermediate value $$c_0$$ c 0 in the above interval such that solitary waves are spectrally stable if their speed is greater than $$c_0$$ c 0 and unstable otherwise.

    Beschreibung: Systematic numerical study of near-infrared radiation formed during filamentation in air revealed the formation of robust light bullet first registered in the experiment (Chen et al. in Appl Phys B 91:219, 2008 ). The near-infrared light bullet propagates along the filament axis with the divergence 〈1 mrad and the quasi-constant duration of ~30 fs. The central wavelength of the bullet gradually increases from 860 to 900 nm during the propagation. The results of our numerical simulation are in agreement with the experiments (Chen et al. in Appl Phys B 91:219,  2008 ; Uryupina et al. in Appl Phys B 110:123, 2013 ).

    Beschreibung: Flame flatness is one of the most critical factors in evaluating the performance of a flat-flame burner. In this paper, the flame flatness of a flat-flame burner is validated using a resolution-doubled one-dimensional wavelength modulation spectroscopy tomography (1D-WMST) technique that only uses one view of multiple parallel laser beams. When the interval of two neighboring parallel laser beams is Δ r , a designed novel geometry of the parallel laser beams realizes a doubled tomographic resolution of Δ r /2. Using the proposed technique, the distributions of temperature and H 2 O mole fraction in an axisymmetric premixed flame are simultaneously reconstructed and hence the flame flatness of a flat-flame burner can be validated. The flatness factor is quantitatively described by the similarity between the reconstructed and expected distributions of H 2 O mole fraction. For flat and non-flat flames, the experimental results agree well with the CFD simulation results, denoting that the resolution-doubled 1D-WMST technique provides a noninvasive, reliable and low cost way to validate the flame flatness of the flat-flame burner.

    Beschreibung: We report on the optical performances of laccaic acid dye in solution at different concentrations and dye–poly(methyl methacrylate) composite thin films. The linear spectral characteristics including optical constants, i.e. refractive index ( n ) and extinction coefficient ( k ), were carried out in a comprehensive way through absorbance, fluorescence and ellipsometric studies. The nonlinear optical parameters such as nonlinear absorption coefficient β eff (or β 2 ), the imaginary third-order susceptibility (Im[ χ (3) ]) and the imaginary part of second-order hyperpolarizability ( γ ) of the samples were evaluated using the open-aperture Z-scan technique with a laser pulse duration of 10 ns at 532 nm wavelength. The corresponding numerical values of these parameters were of 10 −10 , 10 −11 and 10 −32 order, respectively. Two-photon absorption was revealed to be the main driving physical mechanism in the nonlinear response. This suggests that laccaic acid dye can be a potential candidate for NLO materials application.

    Beschreibung: We demonstrate a sensor based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy for the detection of hydrogen fluoride (HF) gas at ambient pressure. Absorption from the HF R(1) ro-vibrational peak at ν̃  = 4038.962 cm −1 (2.476 µm) in the fundamental (Δ ν  = 1) band is measured. A quantitative spectral fit based on HITRAN data is used to account for overlapping spectral peaks of HF and water vapor, with an rms residual noise of 5 × 10 −4 absorbance units. The sensor is optimized for the detection of transient variations in HF concentration. We measure noise-equivalent concentrations for HF of 38 parts-per-trillion by volume (ppt) for 1-s integration times and 2.3 ppt for 10-min integration times.

    Beschreibung: We report on the absorption profile of the monoclinic holmium-doped \(\hbox {KY}(\hbox {WO}_4)_2\) crystal near the optic axis for the maximal absorption wavelength at 1960 nm. The full angular distribution of the absorption coefficient at the vicinity of such optical singularity has been experimentally and numerically investigated. Furthermore, laser experiments along the optic axis have been carried out. So-called conical refraction laser and classical Gaussian laser operation are compared near the optic axis, taking into account the complex absorption profile.

    Beschreibung: We demonstrate a novel and compact fiber-probe pressure sensor based on a micro-Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI). The device is fabricated by splicing both ends of a short-section simplified hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (SHC-PCF) with single-mode fibers. Then, a microchannel is drilled by a femtosecond laser micromachining in the SHC-PCF to allow air to diffuse in. The pressure sensing mechanism is based on the dependence of the air refractive index on pressure. We use both theory and experiment to investigate the sensing characteristics. A micro-FPI with a length of 272 μm demonstrates a pressure sensitivity of 4.071 nm/MPa at 1580 nm and a low-temperature sensitivity of 1.1 pm/°C at atmospheric pressure. We further study the temperature cross sensitivity of the sensor under different pressures. The sensor also shows strong stability and good reversibility, and may be potentially used in pressure sensing applications.

    Beschreibung: We study the thermo-optic Goos–Hänchen (TOGH) effect in a prism–waveguide coupling structure with silicon-on-insulator waveguide. Stationary-phase method is utilized to calculate the TOGH shift. When the waveguide is regarded as a two-dimensional planar waveguide, a nonlinear relation between GH shift and temperature is obtained. Based on the noticeable TOGH effect, a sensitive temperature modulator or sensor can be realized. As the waveguide width is limited, the proposed structure can be regarded as a three-dimensional rectangular waveguide. We explore the GH shift and TOGH effect for different modes propagating in rectangular waveguide which show different linear relations between GH shift and temperature, which can be used to design mode-selective device based on TO effect.

    Beschreibung: We report on an experimental study of vacuum-induced suppression and enhancement of four-wave mixing (FWM) signal in a composite atom–cavity system. By scanning the additional dressing field, the suppression ratio of the FWM signal can reach 90 % compared with 40 % without cavity. We attribute the enhanced suppression and enhancement to the atom–cavity coupling arising from a vacuum-induced Raman process, which amplifies the dressing effect from the additional field. Also, the dressing asymmetry of the atom–cavity coupling is discussed and used to estimate the nonlinearity of atomic medium in the cavity. The suppression and enhancement can be interpreted by a dressed-state picture and agree with theoretical calculations. The investigation may find applications in optical switch and quantum memory controlled by cavity.

    Beschreibung: By simultaneously using a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and a monolayer graphene saturable absorber (SA) in the cavity, a laser-diode-pumped dual-loss-modulated passively Q-switched Tm:LuAG laser at 2 μm is demonstrated for the first time. In comparison with the singly passively Q-switched laser with MWCNT or monolayer graphene SA, the doubly passively Q-switched laser with both MWCNT and monolayer graphene SA can generate shorter pulse width and higher peak power. A maximum pulse width compression ratio of 2.8 and a highest peak power enhancement factor of 4 were obtained at the incident pump power of 5.8 W, respectively. The experimental results show that the dual-loss modulation is an efficient method to compress the pulse widths and improve the peak powers of the Q-switched lasers at 2 μm.

    Beschreibung: Photoexcitation dynamics in a three-step photoionization of atomic uranium has been investigated using time-resolved two-color three-photon and delayed three-color three-photon photoionization signals. Investigations are carried out in an atomic beam of uranium coupled to a high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer using three tunable pulsed dye lasers. Dependence of both the signals on the second-step laser photon fluence is studied. Excited-level-to-excited-level photoexcitation cross section and photoionization cross section from the second excited level are simultaneously determined by analyzing the two-color three-photon and three-color three-photon photoionization signals using population rate equation model. Using this methodology, photoexcitation and photoionization cross sections at seven values of the second-step laser wavelength have been measured. From the measured values of the photoexcitation cross sections, we have obtained excited-level-to-excited-level transition probabilities and compared these with the values reported in the literature.

    Beschreibung: A theoretical analysis of the photorefractive sensitivity of Ti:PPLN ridge waveguides in comparison with conventional Ti:PPLN channel waveguides is presented. In particular, intensity-dependent photorefraction, effective indices, waveguide modes and power-dependent SHG in Ti:PPLN ridge and channel waveguides are modeled for a wide range of parameters. Results predict a much better damage resistance of Ti:PPLN waveguides with ridge geometry in comparison with conventional indiffused channels. This superiority of ridge waveguides is attributed to their higher effective refractive index contrast and more tightly confined guided modes. The theoretical predictions are supported by experimental results for second harmonic generation (SHG) at room temperature and for light-induced detuning characteristics of the phase-matching wavelength.

    Beschreibung: Two-color laser-induced incandescence (LII) measurements are carried out in diffusion flames and at the exhaust of a homemade soot generator, both fueled with ethylene and methane. Two-color prompt LII signals, their ratio and the corresponding temperature have been analyzed as a function of laser fluence. In particular, the effect of fuel, soot load and gas/particle initial temperature on LII measurements have been investigated. LII spectral measurements have also been performed in all conditions for validation. The results suggest that the incandescence is sensitive to both optical and non-optical physical properties of the particles. Moreover, soot volume fraction measurements are dependent on the laser fluence used, indicating that the soot temperature influences the refractive index absorption function. Such issues can be overcome by working at high laser fluences, where the saturation curves are independent from the experimental conditions if the soot absorption function near soot sublimation threshold is known.

    Beschreibung: In this study, In 2 O 3 /Ag/MoO 3 (IAM) nano-multilayer films are designed, and optimum thickness of each layer is calculated. These films were deposited by thermal evaporation technique and then annealed in air atmosphere at different temperatures for 1 h. The effects of annealing temperature on electrical, optical, and structural properties of the IAM system were investigated. The UV–visible–near-IR transmittance and reflectance spectra confirmed that the annealing temperature has significant influence on the electro‐optical characteristics of IAM films. High-quality IAM films with a low sheet resistance of 8.2 (Ω/□) and the maximum optical transmittance of 85 % at 120 °C annealing temperature were obtained. The effect of heat treatment on surface roughness of the layers was also investigated. Figure-of-merit quantity showed that the IAM films annealed at 120 °C have the best performance. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the crystallinity of the structures enhanced with increase in annealing temperature. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated on IAM anodes. The current density–voltage–luminance (J–V–L) characteristic measurements show that the electroluminescence performances of OLED with IAM anode are improved compared with the conventional ITO-based device. The results indicate that the designed system is suitable for use as transparent conductive anode in optoelectronic devices.

    Beschreibung: We demonstrate the effectiveness of silicon phase masks to implement spatially resolved, multispectral imaging capabilities in the range of terahertz frequencies, using a standard setup of basic interest for time-domain spectrometry with a single-cell source and a single-cell detector. Our principle primarily aims at the development of robust and inexpensive systems. It consists of appropriate space-to-time encoding, in order to ensure single-scan triggering and then take advantage of rapid and self-consistent measurements in the two-dimensional space. The process enables very efficient discrimination giving access to a relevant spatial resolution in the analysis of small size, planar assemblies made of inhomogeneous materials. Benchmark results are provided to validate the concept, thanks to prototyping phase masks with 2 × 2 pixels, prior evidencing actual performance limitations in the case of 3 × 3 pixels. Due to the frequency bandwidth of 0.1–1.5 THz in our setup and to the available operating conditions, currently acceptable pixel resolutions lie in the range of 3–4 mm. Numerical modeling by means of finite elements helps to discuss these numbers and to investigate the relevant theoretical issues, figuring the main propagation issues in connection with a sub-picosecond seed pulse throughout various masks. This involves diffraction and trailing edge effects when crossing the mask together with residual, parasitic reflections. Finally, we give a consistent prospective for improved performance, via realistic updates regarding the architecture of the setup and complementary post-processing. Further values for the attainable spatial resolution then range from 5 × 5 to 6 × 6 pixels.

    Beschreibung: A combination of optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) has enabled to determinate the number densities of CH(A 2 Δ) and CH(X 2 Π) radicals simultaneously in a cascaded arc plasma reactor operating with a CH 4 /Ar mixture. It is found that the number density of CH(A 2 Δ) radical increases with discharge current at first and then decreases. However, the number density of CH(X 2 Π) radical decreases with discharge current when the rate of CH 4 flow to total flow is lower than 1 %, while it increases slightly with discharge current when the rate is 1.5 %. The results reveal that CH radicals are deviation from excitation equilibrium. Although OES is the simplest and most straightforward means to investigate the CH radical behavior, it is not enough to provide the information of the CH(X 2 Π) number density, and additional methods, such as CRDS, are needed in the cascaded arc plasma jet.

    Beschreibung: In this paper, we present a numerical study based on 3D FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) simulations that demonstrate the high sensitivity of the optical response of a bowtie nano-aperture antenna (BNA), engraved at the apex of a metal-coated tip, to the distance variation between it and a given substrate. This study mainly discussed the case of the collection mode regime of the BNA and considered the case of two different substrates (high and low refractive index). The coupling between the substrate and the BNA may greatly affect the properties of the optical resonance of the nano-antenna. A blueshift of the resonance wavelength, as large as \(\frac{\varDelta \lambda }{\lambda }=0.3\) , is obtained when the tip moves away over only 10 nm from the substrate (InP) interface. These results open the way to the design of stand-alone optical near-field probes that allow faithful interaction control with a given sample as a function of the distance between them.

    Beschreibung: The published traditional crack problem solutions usually consider cracks located in the planes parallel to the plane of isotropy, which is usually denoted as z =  0. The case of a crack located in the plane x =  0 and subjected to arbitrary normal or tangential loading was solved recently in Fabrikant (Eur J Mech A 30:902–912, 2011 ). This article may be considered as its logical continuation. We consider here a transversely isotropic body, related to the system of axes ( x 1 , x 2 , x 3 ), weakened in the plane x 1 =  0 by a flat crack of arbitrary shape. The plane x 1 =  0 is perpendicular to the planes of isotropy of the transversely isotropic body. The axis Ox 1 coincides with the major axis Ox , and the axes Ox 2 and Ox 3 are obtained by rotation about the axis Ox by arbitrary angle φ . The governing integral equation is derived for such a general case. The case of an elliptical crack is considered in detail. The complete solution for the fields of displacements and stresses is presented as single contour integrals of elementary integrands. Stress intensity factors are computed explicitly.

    Beschreibung: The so-called Stokes’ hypothesis for a Newtonian fluid is reconsidered, and a possible explanation is given of the fact that, in spite of its evidently weak physical justification, it permits to obtain good results for the description of most compressible flows. The explanation stands upon a closer analysis of the effect of the terms of the complete stress tensor in which the viscosity coefficients appear. An alternative formulation of the hypothesis is proposed, which also permits to clearly identify the very particular flow conditions in which it cannot justify the experimental evidence.

    Beschreibung: Considering the chemical reaction during metal oxidation at high temperature, a coupled diffusion–reaction–mechanics model of the metallic oxidation is developed, which is different from the existing mechanochemistry coupling model. Seen from the coupled model, the hydrostatic pressure depending on the diffusion and reaction is a harmonic function if the body force is ignored. Analytical solutions of the concentration and hydrostatic pressure in the steady state are obtained. Then a numerical example in the unsteady state is performed by means of the finite difference method. Numerical results show that the distribution of the concentration in the thin plate is nonlinear due to the interactions among diffusion, reaction and stress.

    Beschreibung: A nonlinear continuum model of van der Waals interactions is established to relate the size-dependent nonlinear properties of crystalline polyethylene. The explicit formulas are derived from the Lennard-Jones potential function for the van der Waals force between any two polymer chains. The present results are in reasonable agreement with those from present united-atom molecular dynamics simulations. This work is a new effort to establish nonlinear analytical models of molecular mechanics for crystalline polymers, and it should be helpful to provide an efficient route for mechanical characterization of crystalline polymers and related materials.

    Beschreibung: The suppression of large vibrations of a smart thin elastic rectangular von Kármán’s plate is considered. The plate is subjected to external disturbances and generalized control forces produced by electromechanical feedback. The considered nonlinear initial-boundary value problem is spatially discretized by means of the time spectral method. The implicit Newmark- β iterative method is employed for the time integration of the obtained system of nonlinear equations of motion. Nonlinear controllers are designed, based on a fuzzy inference system. Two numerical algorithms involving a general control of displacement/velocity and a direct control of the Fourier coefficients are proposed. The techniques have been implemented within MATLAB environment with the use of the fuzzy logic toolbox. Numerical examples are presented.

    Beschreibung: The flow induced above an impermeable membrane undergoing orthogonal linear stretching and orthogonal linear shearing is investigated. For an exact solution of the Navier–Stokes equations, the orthogonal shearing motions must be related through the constant σ = γ δ , where γ and δ are the dimensionless streamwise and transverse shear rates, respectively. The resulting similarity reduction leads to three nonlinearly coupled ordinary differential equations governed by σ and the ratio of membrane stretch rates β . All possible solutions of these equations are found either numerically or, in special cases, analytically. Features of the σ = 0 solutions at β = 0 and asymptotically as β → ∞ are found to be in excellent agreement with numerical calculations. An aside calculation shows that orthogonal shearing in the absence of any plate stretching cannot exist. However, shearing in one coordinate direction is possible as long as the membrane stretches in at least one direction with the caveat that there exists uniform suction through a porous membrane.

    Beschreibung: A two-dimensional problem for an infinite thermoelastic half-space with a permeating substance in contact with the bounding plane is developed. The formulation is applied to the generalized thermoelastic diffusion based on Lord–Shulman theory. The bounding surface is traction free and subjected to a known axisymmetric temperature distribution, and the chemical potential is assumed to be a known function of time. Integral transform technique is used to find the analytic solution in the transform domain by using a direct approach. Inversion of transforms is done employing a numerical scheme. The mathematical model is prepared for copper material, and numerical results for temperature, stress, displacement, chemical potential and concentration are obtained and illustrated graphically.

    Beschreibung: The study on reliability of an aging structure requires taking into account the influence of time. Typical approaches for performing time-variant reliability assessment are always based upon the random process model, where the dynamic distributions of uncertain parameters are determined by a substantial number of samples. In this paper, a new time-variant reliability measurement based on a non-probabilistic interval process model is proposed, in which we describe the time-varying uncertain variables at any time as intervals and define the corresponding auto-covariance function and correlation coefficient function to characterize the correlation between limit states at different times. By combining with the set-theory approach and the classical first-passage theory, a new non-probabilistic model of safety evaluation for time-dependent structures is established, and its measure index is then analytically calculated. The proposed model of time-variant reliability is suitable for both the cases of stationary process and non-stationary process. Moreover, the Monte Carlo method is also presented as a means of verification. The comparison between the presented model and the Monte Carlo-based model is eventually carried out on two application examples; the usage, efficiency and accuracy of the developed approach can be demonstrated.

    Beschreibung: In this work, the concept of a linearized damage variable is introduced within the framework of continuum damage mechanics. Instead of considering one single fictitious undamaged configuration, a number n of smaller fictitious undamaged configurations are utilized. Thus, a smaller and linearized damage variable can be defined for each individual fictitious undamaged configuration. Additionally, the equations of damage evolution are formulated with respect to each individual fictitious undamaged configuration. Some interesting and surprising results are obtained. In this regard, a new result is obtained for the strain energies with respect to the n fictitious undamaged configurations. The linearized damage variable can be used for states of damage where the damage is small. The formulation is linear elastic based on linear superposition and should be applicable to many high-cycle fatigue problems.

    Beschreibung: By extending the pseudo-Stroh formalism to multilayered one-dimensional orthorhombic quasicrystal plates, we derive an exact closed-form solution for simply supported plates under surface loadings. The propagator matrix method is introduced to efficiently and accurately treat the multilayered cases. As a numerical example, a sandwich plate made of quasicrystals and crystals with two different stacking sequences is investigated. The displacement and stress fields for these two stacking sequences are presented, which clearly demonstrate the importance of the stacking sequences on the induced physical quantities. Our exact closed-form solution should be of particular interest to the design of one-dimensional quasicrystal laminated plates. The numerical results can be further used as benchmarks to various numerical methods, such as the finite element and finite difference methods, on the analysis of laminated composites made of one-dimensional quasicrystals.

    Beschreibung: In the present article, a new two-dimensional integrable system containing 17 free parameters is introduced. For giving certain values for these parameters, new integrable problems can be constructed, which generalize some known previous problems, and in some cases, we can restore some previous integrable problems. Two new integrable problems are announced, describing the motion in an Euclidean plane and on a pseudo-sphere. In the irreversible case, a new integrable problem in rigid body dynamics, which generalizes Goriachev–Chaplygin’s case (Varshav Univ Izvest 3:1–13, 1916 ), Yehia’s case (Mech Res Commun 23:423–427, 1996 ) and Elmandouh’s case (Acta Mech 226:2461–2472, 2015 ), is announced.

    Beschreibung: Response variability of Timoshenko beams with uncertain Young’s modulus subjected to deterministic static loads is analyzed. The uncertain material property is idealized within a non-probabilistic context by using an interval field model recently proposed by the first two authors. Such a model is able to quantify the dependency between adjacent values of an interval uncertainty by means of a real, deterministic, symmetric, nonnegative, bounded function conceived as the non-probabilistic counterpart of the autocorrelation function characterizing random fields. In order to analyze the effects of Young’s modulus uncertainty on the static response of the Timoshenko beam, a finite difference discretization of the coupled interval ordinary differential equations of equilibrium is performed. Then, approximate explicit expressions of the lower bound and upper bound of the interval response are derived. Numerical results showing the effects of interval material uncertainty on the static response of a simply supported beam under uniformly distributed load are presented.

    Beschreibung: This paper presents a simple method for finding the analytical solution for nonlinear boundary problems. The shifting function method is applied to developing the static deflection of an out-of-plane curved Timoshenko beam with nonlinear boundary conditions. Considering the out-of-plane motion of a uniform curved Timoshenko beam of constant radius R and a doubly symmetric cross section, three coupled governing differential equations are derived via Hamilton’s principle. After some simple arithmetic operations, the curved beam system can be decomposed into a complete sixth-order ordinary differential characteristic equation and the associated boundary conditions. An example is given to illustrate the analysis and show that the proposed method performs very well for problems with strong nonlinearity.

    Beschreibung: One of the significant issues in the nanotube research community is buckling behavior. In the present work, the buckling of single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs), double-walled nanotubes (DWNTs) and multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs) under axial compression is investigated. Buckling analysis for nanotube composite structures is performed by using layer-wise theory based on the nonlocal constitutive relations of Eringen. The governing equations of SWNTs, DWNTs and MWNTs are developed. Then analytical solutions are obtained using the state-space method. The effects of nanotube length, diameter and nonlocal parameter on the buckling loads are studied. The numerical results indicate that the nonlocal parameter is important for the buckling analysis of nanotube composite structures.

    Beschreibung: This paper presents the experimental results concerning the vortex-induced vibration phenomena of a flexibly mounted enclosed smooth rigid pipe. The experiment was newly designed and fabricated, utilizing the circulating water tunnel concept. New results on the dynamic response of the vibrating system are shown. The stream flow was generated by using a large displacement volume submersible water tank, controlled through the ABB inverter. The rotation frequency controlled based was implemented in the ABB inverter, and the measurement of stream flow was taken by using a flow rate sensor at the respective pump rotation frequency. The Reynolds number of the experiments ranges from \({\sim4900}\) to \({\sim15,000}\) , and its corresponding reduced velocities, based on the natural frequency in still water, vary up to \({\sim7}\) . The riser modeled pipe was positioned in vertical direction, and it is flexibly mounted at both ends. The system has low mass ratio and damping coefficient, with the values 1.184 and 0.08, respectively. The mass–damping ratio \({({m}^{*}\zeta)}\) is 0.09472. The results for the bare pipe cylinder in this experimental setup are in good agreementwith othermeasurements found in the literature.

    Beschreibung: The influence of local thermal nonequilibrium with Cattaneo effects in the solid on the onset of thermal-convective instability in a horizontal layer of Darcy porous medium saturated by a ferrofluid in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is investigated. The presence of the Cattaneo effect is to instill instability via oscillatory motion as well which is not reminiscent of the observed instability phenomenon in its absence. Increase in the value of the solid thermal relaxation time parameter τ is found to advance the onset of oscillatory ferroconvection. The onset of stationary ferroconvection is delayed, while the onset of oscillatory convection is accelerated with an increase in the value of the interphase heat transfer coefficient H t . The threshold value of H t , at which the transition from stationary to oscillatory convection takes place, decreases with increasing τ noticeably and marginally with increasing magnetic parameter M 3 , while it increases with increasing ratio of conductivities α and magnetic number M 1 . The critical wave number for stationary convection is found to be higher than for oscillatory convection.

    Beschreibung: In existing literature, it remains an unexplored question whether any inclusion shape can achieve a uniform internal strain field in an elastic half-plane under either given uniform remote loadings or given uniform eigenstrains imposed on the inclusion. This paper examines the existence and construction of such single or multiple non-elliptical inclusions that achieve prescribed uniform internal strain fields in an elastic half-plane under given uniform anti-plane shear eigenstrains imposed on the inclusions. Such non-elliptical inclusion shapes in a half-plane can be determined by solving the original problem of an unknown holomorphic function in a multiply connected half-plane, which is transferred to an equivalent problem of an unknown holomorphic function in a multiply connected whole plane based on analytic continuation techniques. Extensive numerical examples are shown for single inclusion, multiple inclusions and two geometrically symmetrical inclusions, respectively. It is found that the inclusion shapes which achieve uniform internal strain fields depend on the given uniform eigenstrains, and the inclusion shapes that achieve uniform internal strain fields for arbitrarily given uniform eigenstrains do not exist. Moreover, specific conditions are derived on the given uniform eigenstrains and prescribed uniform internal strain fields for the existence of two geometrically symmetrical inclusions that achieve uniform internal strain fields.

    Beschreibung: The nonlinear dynamics of a thin axisymmetric liquid film subjected to axial forcing of a horizontal cylindrical surface for initial conditions obtained from various states of a corresponding unforced system on its path to rupture, including near-rupture film configurations, is investigated in this paper. We exploit a nonlinear evolution equation describing the long-wave spatiotemporal dynamics of the film thickness derived in our earlier work and studied there for small-amplitude initial conditions. In this case, the existence of a critical curve separating between the domains of ruptured and contiguous states in the forcing amplitude–frequency space was shown. We find that near-rupture configurations of the film may be healed by applying harmonic forcing of the substrate with a sufficiently large forcing amplitude. We also reveal that for large forcing delay times the critical forcing amplitude is determined from a constant value of a linear combination of the maximal velocity and acceleration imparted by the forcing on the system when the rest of the problem parameters remains fixed. In the long-range limit, the dynamics of healed films reproduces the long-time dynamics of the films evolving from small-amplitude initial conditions for the same parameter set. It is found that local axial movement of the satellite drop in the near-rupture zone leads to a substantial slow-down of an increase in the critical amplitude in the intermediate range of the forcing delay time when the forcing frequency is fixed.

    Beschreibung: While the response of a damped harmonic oscillator to random excitation offers the basic model in mechanics, stochastic dynamics, and stochastic fatigue of structures, the response due to random forcings with fractal and Hurst characteristics is studied for the first time. We investigate two types of such forcings: Cauchy and Dagum. Given the fact that their covariance functions lack explicit Fourier transforms, the spectral analyses are not possible, and, hence, the studies have to be conducted directly in the time domain—mathematically, a much more challenging task. In comparison with conventional models, we also give responses of the oscillator under random excitations of the white noise, Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU), and Matérn type. In contradistinction to the latter which has some limited ability of modeling multiscale phenomena, the Cauchy and Dagum forcings allow decoupling of fractal and Hurst effects. On the basis of a second-order stochastic differential equation, we calculate the transient second-order characteristics of the response under any given type of excitation. Overall, we find that, given the same variance on input, the variance on output is strongest for Matérn, then Cauchy, then OU, then white noise, and finally Dagum forcing. Also, if the excitation correlation function is Matérn, the correlation function of response is approximately Matérn, but this is not the case with the Cauchy excitation.

    Beschreibung: This study deals with forced vibration analysis of a microplate subjected to a moving load. The formulation is developed based on the modified couple stress theory in conjunction with Kirchhoff–Love plate theory. The equations of motion of the problem are derived using Lagrange’s equations. In order to obtain the response of the microplate, the trial function for the dynamic deflection is expressed in the polynomial form. The equations of motion are solved by using the implicit time integration Newmark-β method, and then displacements, velocities and accelerations of the microplate at the considered point and time are determined. Five different sets of boundary condition are considered. For this purpose, boundary conditions are satisfied by adding some auxiliary functions to the trial functions. A parametric study is conducted to study the effects of the material length scale parameter, plate aspect ratio, boundary conditions and the moving load velocity on the dynamic response of the microplate. Also, in order to validate the present formulation and solution method, some comparisons with those available in the literature are performed. Good agreement is found. The results show that the dynamic deflections are significantly affected by the scale parameter and the load velocity.

    Beschreibung: The oscillation of rigid rods is a simple and classical problem. The oscillation theory of rigid rods is widely applicable in various fields. However, the deformation effect on the oscillation periods of slender rods has not yet been studied. Herein we employ the energy method to derive the expression for the oscillation periods of deformable and slender rods. The derivation of the expression is straightforward. We present the deformation effect on the oscillation periods of slender iron wires. As the diameter of wires decreases and the length increases, the deformation effect becomes more significant and the percentage error of the oscillation period without including deformation effect increases. The expression for the oscillation periods of deformable and slender rods is verified by oscillation experiments.

    Beschreibung: Molecular dynamics simulation of nano-indentation of single-crystal and bicrystal FCC aluminum is performed. The role of crystallographic orientation during nano-indentation of single-crystal aluminum is assessed. Then, the influence of the presence of a grain boundary is analyzed by adding high-angle symmetric tilt boundaries of Σ5〈210〉/(100) and Σ5〈310〉/(100) parallel to the surface on which the indentation is performed. Furthermore, in both cases, the size of the indenter is changed to investigate how the surface curvature of the indenter affects the nano-indentation process. The results suggest that in each crystallographic orientation, the presence of a grain boundary increases the required force for indentation, while the distance of a grain boundary from the indentation surface could affect the increase in the required force. Simulations prove that the grain boundary acts as a source of generation and emission of dislocations and restricts the penetration of the indenter by limiting the slip band formation and plastic deformation. The dislocation emission from the grain boundary restricts the penetration of the indenter and limits the formation of the octahedral slip systems of type {111}〈110〉 and consequently increases the required force for indentation in bicrystals.

    Beschreibung: To extend the restricted applicability of the traditional perturbation method with small uncertainty level, this paper presents a first-order subinterval parameter perturbation method (FSPPM) and a modified subinterval parameter perturbation method (MSPPM) to solve the heat convection-diffusion problem with large interval parameters in material properties, external loads and boundary conditions. Based on the subinterval theory, the original uncertain-but-bounded parameters with limited information are divided into several small subintervals. The eventual response interval is assembled by the interval union operation. In both methods, the Taylor series is used to approximate the interval matrix and vector. The inversion of interval matrix in FSPPM is evaluated by the first-order Neumann series, while the modified Neumann series with higher-order terms is proposed to calculate the interval matrix inverse in MSPPM. By comparing the results with the traditional Monte Carlo simulation, two numerical examples evidence the remarkable accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed methods at predicting an uncertain temperature field in engineering.

    Beschreibung: Applying the operator method, general solutions for dynamic governing equations involving anisotropic piezoelectric materials are derived. Based on the general solutions, a rigid solid with a sinusoidal surface moving along the surface of anisotropic piezoelectric materials is concerned. Dual series equations are obtained and solved analytically. Then, the electro-elastic fields are determined in series forms. A full contact problem leads to more simple forms. Numerical analysis is performed for the anisotropic piezoelectric material \({0^{\circ }}\) Graphite-epoxy, in which an illustrative example concerning the vertical mechanical displacement on the surface is displayed to validate the present approach. Results demonstrate that the contact behavior is considerably affected by both the velocity and material properties.

    Beschreibung: A simplified analysis is carried out to derive the analytical solution for the large deflection of a fully clamped metal sandwich beam under impulsive loading. Using the classical yield criterion for sandwich structures, the moment–axial force interaction induced by large deflection is uncoupled. Then, plastic bending and stretching deformations are separated into two distinct phases, i.e., a bending-only phase and a plastic string phase. The simplified analytical solutions for the maximum deflection and structural response time have been obtained and are in good agreement with the previous theoretical and numerical results. Moreover, the analytical formulae are employed to determine the optimal geometries of a sandwich beam that maximize the resistance to impulsive loading at a given mass.

    Beschreibung: In this paper, we present a new fractional dynamical theory, i.e., the dynamics of a Nambu system with fractional derivatives (the fractional Nambu dynamics), and study its applications to mechanical systems. By using the definition of combined fractional derivative, we construct unified fractional Nambu equations and, respectively, give four new kinds of fractional Nambu equations based on the different definitions of fractional derivative. Further, we study the relations between the fractional Nambu system, the fractional generalized Hamiltonian system, the fractional Birkhoffian system, the fractional Hamiltonian system, the fractional Lagrangian system and a series of integer-order dynamical systems and present the transformation conditions. And furthermore, as applications of the fractional Nambu method, we construct two kinds of fractional dynamical models, which include the fractional Euler–Poinsot model of rigid body which rotates with respect to a fixed point and the fractional Yamaleev oscillator model. This work provides a general method for studying a fractional dynamical problem which is related to science and engineering.

    Beschreibung: A closed solution for one-dimensional heat conduction in a slab with nonhomogenous time-dependent boundary condition at one end and homogenous boundary condition with time-dependent heat transfer coefficient at the other end is proposed. The shifting function method developed by Lee and his colleagues is used to derive the solution of the temperature distribution of the slab. By splitting the Biot function into a constant plus a function and introducing two particularly chosen shifting functions, the system is transformed into a partial differential equation with homogenous boundary conditions only. Consequently, the transformed system can be solved by a series expansion method. Two limiting cases, including time-independent boundary condition and constant heat transfer coefficient, are proved to be identical to those in the literature. Three-term approximation used in numerical examples can always result in an error 〈1 % in the present study, rendering the proposed methodology efficient and accurate. Finally, the influence of parameters of heat flux function or Biot function on the temperature distribution is presented.

    Beschreibung: This research work addresses questions on the vibration characteristics of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using multi-scale analysis. Atomistic finite element method (AFEM) is one such multi-scale technique where sequential mode is used to transfer information between two length scales to model and simulate the nanostructures at continuum level. This method is used to investigate the vibration characteristics of SWCNTs. Open- and capped-end armchair and zigzag nanotubes are considered with clamped-free and clamped–clamped boundary conditions. The dependence of vibration characteristic of SWCNTs on their length, diameter and atomic structure is also demonstrated. The body interatomic Tersoff–Brenner (TB) potential is used to represent the energy between two carbon atoms. Based on the TB potential, a new set of force constant parameters is established for carbon nanotubes and presented in this paper. Molecular and structural mechanics analogy is used to find the equivalent geometric and elastic properties of the space frame element to represent the carbon–carbon bond. To validate the vibration results of AFEM incorporating the proposed new set of force constants, molecular dynamics simulation is also carried out on the same structure of carbon nanotube, and it is found that they are in good agreement with each other.

    Beschreibung: The present paper describes the research of the optical device for two-dimensional straightness measurement of technological machines. Mathematical study of an optical device, operating on the phase principle and measuring transversal displacements of machine parts in two directions ( X and Y ) during their linear longitudinal motion in a machine (alongside the Z axis), is presented. How to estimate the range of travel along the Z axis is analytically shown. At this range, the measurer gives correct measurements of transverse displacement. The necessary distance from the objective focus to the image plane was defined mathematically. The sample results of measuring the displacement of the table of a technological machine by using the optical device are presented in the paper. This optical device for non-contact straightness measurement can be used for measurement straightness in turning, milling, drilling, grinding machines and other technological machines, also in geodesy and cartography, and for moving accuracy testing of mechatronic devices, robotics and others.

    Beschreibung: Non-resonant laser-induced thermal acoustics (LITA), a four-wave mixing technique, was applied to post-shock flows within a shock tube. Simultaneous single-shot determination of temperature, speed of sound and flow velocity behind incident and reflected shock waves at different pressure and temperature levels are presented. Measurements were performed non-intrusively and without any seeding. The paper describes the technique and outlines its advantages compared to more established laser-based methods with respect to the challenges of shock tube experiments. The experiments include argon and nitrogen as test gas at temperatures of up to 1000 K and pressures of up to 43 bar. The experimental data are compared to calculated values based on inviscid one-dimensional shock wave theory. The single-shot uncertainty of the technique is investigated for worst-case test conditions resulting in relative standard deviations of 1, 1.7 and 3.4 % for Mach number, speed of sound and temperature, respectively. For all further experimental conditions, calculated values stay well within the 95 % confidence intervals of the LITA measurement.

    Beschreibung: Airflow induced by femtosecond laser (800 nm/1 kHz/25 fs) filamentation with different lengths was investigated in a laboratory cloud chamber. Various filament lengths were generated by adjusting laser energy and lens focal length. It was found that airflow patterns are closely related to filament intensity and length. Intense and long filaments are beneficial in updraft generation with large vortices above the filament, while intense and short filaments tend to promote the formation of well-contacted vortices below the filament. Differently patterned airflows induced elliptical snow piles with different masses. We simulated airflow in a cloud chamber numerically taking laser filaments as heat sources. The mechanisms of differently patterned airflow and snow formation induced by filaments were discussed.

    Beschreibung: Tissue simulators, the so-called tissue phantoms, have been used to mimic human tissue for spectroscopic applications. Phantoms’ design depends on patterning the optical properties, namely absorption and scattering coefficients which characterize light propagation mechanisms inside the tissues. In this work, two calibration models based on measurements adopting integrating sphere systems have been used to determine the optical properties of the studied solid phantoms. Integrating sphere measurement results were fed into the calibration models using the multiple polynomial regression method and Newton–Raphson algorithm. The third-order polynomials have been used for optical properties predictions. Good agreement between the two models has been obtained. Role of solid phantoms’ components, namely titanium dioxide as a scatterer and black carbon as an absorber, has been discussed. Both of the two components showed observable effects on the absorption and scattering of light inside the solid tissue phantoms.

    Beschreibung: We report a novel time-resolved photoacoustic-based technique for studying the thermal decomposition mechanisms of some secondary explosives such as RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine), picric acid, 4,6-dinitro-5-(4-nitro-1 H -imidazol-1-yl)-1 H -benzo[ d ] [ 1 – 3 ] triazole, and 5-chloro-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1 H -tetrazole. A comparison of the thermal decomposition mechanisms of these secondary explosives was made by detecting NO 2 molecules released under controlled pyrolysis between 25 and 350 °C. The results show excellent agreement with the thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA–DTA) results. A specially designed PA cell made of stainless steel was filled with explosive vapor and pumped using second harmonic, i.e., λ  = 532 nm, pulses of duration 7 ns at a 10 Hz repetition rate, obtained using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The use of a combination of PA and TGA–DTA techniques enables the study of NO 2 generation, and this method can be used to scale the performance of these explosives as rocket fuels. The minimum detection limits of the four explosives were 38 ppmv to 69 ppbv, depending on their respective vapor pressures.

    Beschreibung: For the first time, spatial distribution of major and trace elements has been studied in cholesterol gallstones using time-of-flight secondary mass ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). The TOF-SIMS has been used to study the elemental constituents of the center and surface parts of the gallstone sample. We have classified the gallstone sample using Fourier transform spectroscopy. The detected elements in cholesterol gallstone sample were carbon (C), hydrogen (H), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), potassium (K), strontium (Sr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb). The detected molecules in the cholesterol gallstone were CH 3 + , CO 3 + , CaCO 3 + and C 3 H + . Our results revealed that the contents of these elements in cholesterol gallstone were higher in the center part than that in the surface part. In the present paper, we have also presented the UV–Vis spectroscopic studies of the center and surface parts of the gallstone sample which indicated the presence of a higher content of cholesterol in the surface part and bilirubin in the center part.

    Beschreibung: Numerical experiments are carried out to calculate continuum emissivity and opacity of plasmas produced from laser-irradiated Au and Pb targets as hohlraum wall materials. Targets are considered to be solid or porous with different initial densities. Simulation results show a good agreement compared with the measured data. The results show that under identical conditions, X-ray emission is higher for Au plasma; however, by decreasing initial densities, X-ray yield enhancement is greater for Pb plasma. By using a Pb target with initial density of about 1.14 g cm −3 instead of solid Au target, the same X-ray yield even more can be obtained. Calculations also show that in the conditions of solid density targets, Pb plasma offers a little lower opacity in soft X-ray region. Decreasing initial density of Pb causes its opacity to increase and get closer to the opacity of solid Au which in turn reduces energy losses in hohlraum wall.

    Beschreibung: It is well known that the main approaches of the analytical solving of the elasticity mixed plane problems for a semi-strip are based on the different representations of the equilibrium equations’ solutions: the representations through the harmonic and by harmonic functions, through the stress function, Fadle–Papkovich functions and so on. The main shortcoming of these approaches is connected with the fact that to obtain the expression for the real mechanical characteristics, one should execute additional operations, not always simple ones. The approach that is proposed in this paper allows the direct solution of the equilibrium equations. With the help of the matrix integral transformation method applied directly to the equilibrium equations, the initial boundary problem is reduced to a vector boundary problem in the transformation’s domain. The use of matrix differential calculations and Green’s matrix function leads to the exact vector solution of the problem. Green’s matrix function is constructed in the form of a bilinear representation which simplifies the calculations. The method is demonstrated by the solving of the thermoelastic problem for the semi-strip. The zones and conditions of the strain stress occurrence on the semi-strip’s lateral sides, important to engineering applications, are investigated.

    Beschreibung: Modal analysis free vibration response only (MAFVRO) is one of the output-only modal analysis methods which is able to determine the modal parameters of a vibration system by the free vibration responses. However, most of the vibrating systems are subjected to random excitations, and in such cases, the traditional MAFVRO cannot extract the modal parameters. In this study, the traditional MAFVRO method has been developed to randomly excited vibration systems by using some modifications. In order to verify the accuracy of modified MAFVRO, this method is applied to vibration analysis of a cantilever beam and a vehicle suspension system which are subjected to the random white noise excitation. The estimated results are compared with the exact solution obtained from the structural eigenvalue problem. Comparing the results reveals that the developed method can estimate the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a randomly excited system with a good accuracy. In addition, the effect of the measurement noise on the estimated modal parameters is investigated.

    Beschreibung: Following their discovery in the early 1960s, there has been a continuous quest for ways to take advantage of the extraordinary properties of shape memory alloys (SMAs). These intermetallic alloys can be extremely compliant while retaining the strength of metals and can convert thermal energy to mechanical work. The unique properties of SMAs result from a reversible diffussionless solid-to-solid phase transformation from austenite to martensite. The integration of SMAs into composite structures has resulted in many benefits, which include actuation, vibration control, damping, sensing, and self-healing. However, despite substantial research in this area, a comparable adoption of SMA composites by industry has not yet been realized. This discrepancy between academic research and commercial interest is largely associated with the material complexity that includes strong thermomechanical coupling, large inelastic deformations, and variable thermoelastic properties. Nonetheless, as SMAs are becoming increasingly accepted in engineering applications, a similar trend for SMA composites is expected in aerospace, automotive, and energy conversion and storage-related applications. In an effort to aid in this endeavor, a comprehensive overview of advances with regard to SMA composites and devices utilizing them is pursued in this paper. Emphasis is placed on identifying the characteristic responses and properties of these material systems as well as on comparing the various modeling methodologies for describing their response. Furthermore, the paper concludes with a discussion of future research efforts that may have the greatest impact on promoting the development of SMA composites and their implementation in multifunctional structures.

    Beschreibung: This paper presents a novel three-dimensional hybrid smoothed finite element method (H-SFEM) for solid mechanics problems. In 3D H-SFEM, the strain field is assumed to be the weighted average between compatible strains from the finite element method (FEM) and smoothed strains from the node-based smoothed FEM with a parameter α equipped into H-SFEM. By adjusting α, the upper and lower bound solutions in the strain energy norm and eigenfrequencies can always be obtained. The optimized α value in 3D H-SFEM using a tetrahedron mesh possesses a close-to-exact stiffness of the continuous system, and produces ultra-accurate solutions in terms of displacement, strain energy and eigenfrequencies in the linear and nonlinear problems. The novel domain-based selective scheme is proposed leading to a combined selective H-SFEM model that is immune from volumetric locking and hence works well for nearly incompressible materials. The proposed 3D H-SFEM is an innovative and unique numerical method with its distinct features, which has great potential in the successful application for solid mechanics problems.

    Beschreibung: We report the two-photon interference properties of a photon pair generated in a type-II collinear periodically poled KTiOPO 4 (PPKTP) crystal pumped by a 406-nm diode laser capable of producing a single or dual longitudinal mode (LM). When the Hong–Ou–Mandel (HOM) interference signals in the PPKTP crystal pumped by a dual-mode diode laser were investigated at various crystal temperatures, it was found that the maximum visibility of the HOM interference signal depends on the relative strength of the dual LMs of the pump laser. The HOM interference pattern was numerically calculated considering the dual LM components of the pump laser diode and the crystal temperature, and was found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

    Beschreibung: One- and two-ring aromatics such as toluene and naphthalene are frequently used molecular tracer species in laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) imaging diagnostics. Quantifying LIF signal intensities requires knowledge of the photo-physical processes that determine the fluorescence quantum yield. Collision-induced and intramolecular energy transfer processes in the excited electronic state closely interact under practical conditions. They can be separated through experiments at variable low pressures. Effective fluorescence lifetimes of gaseous toluene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, anisole, naphthalene, and 1-methylnaphthalene diluted in CO 2 were measured after picosecond laser excitation at 266 nm and time-resolved detection of fluorescence intensities. Measurements in an optically accessible externally heated cell between 296 and 475 K and 0.010–1 bar showed that effective fluorescence lifetimes generally decrease with temperature, while the influence of the bath-gas pressure depends on the respective target species and temperature. The results provide non-radiative and fluorescence rate constants and experimentally validate the effect of photo-induced cooling.

    Beschreibung: We present a mid-infrared pulsed cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) setup based on difference frequency mixing of a tunable dye laser pumped by a Nd:YAG laser and the residual 1064 nm pulse in a temperature-stabilized lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 ) crystal. The performances of such a spectrometer have been investigated by studying the absorption spectrum of methane around 3 µm at room temperature. Our results show a minimum detectable absorption coefficient of 5 × 10 −8  cm −1 . Our approach combines the excellent sensitivity of CRDS with the wide tunable range of difference frequency generation (DFG) with a dye laser. However, the relatively low resolution of this spectrometer prevents the quantification of methane in a wide pressure range. To our knowledge, we report here the first realization and application of a pulsed DFG-based CRDS experiment used for sensitive trace gas detection.

    Beschreibung: In this work, we study the transformation properties of the local form of the material (referential) balance of energy equation under the superposition of arbitrary material diffeomorphisms. For this purpose, the tensor analysis on manifolds is utilized. We show that the material balance of energy equation, in general, cannot be invariant; in fact an extra term appears in the transformed balance of energy equation, which is directly related to the work performed by the configurational stresses. By making the fundamental assumption that the body and the ambient space manifolds are always related in the course of deformation and by utilizing the metric concept, we determine this extra term. Building on this, we derive several constitutive equations for the material stress tensor. The compatibility of these constitutive equations with the second law of thermodynamics is evaluated. Finally, we postulate that the material balance of energy equation is covariant, and we study this case in detail, as well.

    Beschreibung: Multi-axial hyper-elastic models for large strain rubberlike elasticity are established in a broad sense free of the commonly assumed constraint of incompressibility. Results are derived directly from uniaxial stress–strain relations by means of certain explicit procedures. Novelties in four respects are incorporated in the new models: (i) constitutive parameters of direct physical meanings may be introduced to represent features of rubberlike elasticity; (ii) the usual incompressibility constraint is no longer assumed and relevant issues may be rendered irrelevant; (iii) the incompressibility case may be derived as a natural limit; and (iv) accurate agreement with benchmark data for several deformation modes may be achieved, including uniaxial extension, equi-biaxial extension as well as plane-strain extension and others.

    Beschreibung: Hypersingular integral equations for two intersecting three-dimensional cracks are derived by using Somigliana formula, in which the unknown functions are the displacement discontinuities on the crack-surfaces. The singularity of the unknowns at the crack-front is analyzed by the analytical asymptotic method, and the analytical solutions of the singular stresses near the crack-front are given. Numerical solutions of the stress intensity factors for some examples are presented and discussed.

    Beschreibung: A telescope-grating-deformable scheme is proposed to compensate the angular dispersion of ultrabroadband spectrum. A simple design consideration is formulated based on the large angular dispersion of the idler from noncollinear optical parametric amplification. A proof of principle experiment is demonstrated. A 3-μJ ultrabroadband near-infrared pulse with spectrum range from 700 to 1400 nm has been generated. The technique has great potential to provide an ultrabroadband seed with negligible angular dispersion for high-power amplification of few-cycle pulses.

    Beschreibung: Up-conversion can be the main mechanism of energy losses in laser glasses with high concentration of erbium ions. This investigation is devoted to the evaluation of up-conversion parameters in several phosphate and silicate Er-doped glasses. Analysis of the luminescent lifetime shortening at high excitation level has shown that the up-conversion parameters in different glasses can differ by an order of magnitude. The smallest up-conversion was observed in Ba crown silicate glass and Li–Ln-phosphate glass.

    Beschreibung: Wavefront aberrations are one of the largest uncertainty factors in present atom interferometers. We present a detailed numerical and experimental analysis of this effect based on measured aberrations from optical windows. By placing windows into the Raman beam path of our atomic gravimeter, we verify for the first time the induced bias in very good agreement with theory. Our method can be used to reduce the uncertainty in atomic gravimeters by one order of magnitude, resulting in an error of 〈3 × 10 −10 g, and it is suitable in a wide variety of atom interferometers with thermal or ultracold atoms. We discuss the limitations of our method, potential improvements, and its role in future generation experiments.

    Beschreibung: In this review, we have discussed the potential application of the emerging imaging modality, i.e., optical coherence tomography (OCT) for glucose monitoring in biological tissues. OCT provides monitoring of glucose diffusion in different fibrous tissues like in sclera by determining the permeability rate with acceptable accuracy both in type 1 and in type 2 diabetes. The maximum precision of glucose measurement in Intralipid suspensions, for example, with the OCT technique yields the accuracy up to 4.4 mM for 10 % Intralipid and 2.2 mM for 3 % Intralipid.

    Beschreibung: Optical-feedback cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy is a highly sensitive trace gas sensing technique that relies on feedback from a resonant intracavity field to successively lock the laser to the cavity as the wavelength is scanned across a molecular absorption with a comb of resonant frequencies. V-shaped optical cavities have been favoured in the past in order to avoid additional feedback fields from non-resonant reflections that potentially suppress the locking to the resonant cavity frequency. A model of the laser–cavity coupling demonstrates, however, that the laser can stably lock to a resonant linear cavity, within certain constraints on the relative intensity of the two feedback sources. By mode mismatching the field into the linear cavity, we have shown that it is theoretically and practically possible to spatially filter out the unwanted non-resonant component in order for the resonant field to dominate the feedback competition at the laser. A 5.3  \(\upmu \hbox {m}\)  cw quantum cascade laser scanning across a \(\hbox {CO}_2\) absorption feature demonstrated stable locking to achieve a minimum detectable absorption coefficient of \(2.7\,\times \,10^{-9}\,\hbox {cm}^{-1}\) for 1-s averaging. Detailed investigations of feedback effects on the laser output verified the validity of our theoretical models.

    Beschreibung: A new method of pump-coupling in diode-pumped alkali vapor amplifier is reported, which uses ring-LD to tightly surround the alkali vapor cell for directly coupled side-pumping. The kinetic and fluid dynamic modeling, numerical approaches of the ring-LD side-pumped configuration are proposed and applied to the static and the flowing-gas Cs vapor amplifiers. Pump intensity and temperature distribution in the cell are simulated. Influences of some important factors on laser power are calculated and analyzed. Comparisons of different pumped configurations are made, demonstrating the highest utilizing efficiency of pump power of the ring-LD side-pumped configuration. Thus the model is very helpful for designing high-power side-pumped alkali vapor amplifiers.
