    Notes: Abstract High temperature strengthening mechanisms in discontinuous metal matrix composites were examined by performing a close comparison between the creep behavior of 15vol. pct SiCw/8009Al and that of its matrix alloy, 8009Al. Both the alloy and composite exhibit a single-slope behavior with anomalously high values of apparent stress exponent and high apparent activation energy. The presence of SiC whiskers does not remarkably influence these two kinds of dependence of creep rates but reduces the creep rates by about two orders of magnitude. Transmission electron microscopy examination of the deformation microstructure reveals the occurrence of attractive dislocation/particle interaction. The creep data were analyzed by the threshold stress approach and by the dislocation-climb theories based on attractive interaction between dislocations and dispersoids. All data can be rationalized by a power-law with a stress exponent of 5 and a creep activation energy close to that for the self-diffusion in aluminum. The threshold stress decreases linearly with increasing temperature. General climb together with the attractive but not strong interactions between the dislocations and dispersoids is suggested to be the operative deformation mechanism. The contribution of SiC whiskers to the creep strength of 8009 Al composite can be evaluated quantitatively when the shear-lag model is applied. However, the effects of whisker length and whisker orientation distributions must be considered. Two probability density functions are used for modelling the distribution of whisker length and whisker orientation.

    Notes: Abstract. To evaluate the independent and interactive contributions of alcohol dehydrogenase-2 (ADH2), aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) and ethanol-induced isozyme cytochrome P450-2E1 (CYP2E1) genes to alcohol consumption large enough to induce health problems, 643 healthy Japanese men aged between 23 and 64 years, recruited from two different occupational groups, were analyzed for genotype and drinking habits. The frequency of excessive alcohol consumers (EAC) who drank 90 ml or more alcohol more than 3 days a week was significantly higher in subjects possessing the ALDH2 1 /ALDH2 1 genotype than in those having ALDH2 1 /ALDH2 2 or ALDH2 2 /ALDH2 2 genotypes. A significant difference was also found in the different genotypes of CYP2E1. Moreover, a borderline significant interaction between the ALDH2 and CYP2E1 genotypes on excessive alcohol consumption was observed, i.e., the group of subjects having the c2 allele of CYP2E1 had a higher frequency of EAC than those having c1/c1 genotypes in the genotype subgroup ALDH2 1 /ALDH2 1 , whereas these were not found in the heterozygote and homozygote subgroups of the ALDH2 2 allele. Neither the independent nor interactive genetic effect of ADH2 on excessive alcohol consumption was obvious. In conclusion, Japanese men with the ALDH2 1 /ALDH2 1 genotype and the c2 allele of CYP2E1 are at higher risk of showing excessive alcohol consumption.

    Notes: Abstract The in situ formed Al2O3, TiB2 and Al3Ti mixture-reinforced aluminium composites were successfully fabricated by the reaction sintering of the TiO2-B-Al system in a vacuum. With increasing boron content in the TiO2-B-Al system, the amount of generated TiB2 in the composites increased and Al3Ti content decreased. At the same time the distribution uniformity of the in situ formed Al2O3 and TiB2 particulates was obviously improved, and the size of the Al3Ti particles was reduced. The in situ Al2O3 and TiB2 particulates had sizes from 0.096–1.88 μm. The interface between the in situ formed particulates and the aluminium matrix was clean, and no consistent crystallographic orientation relationship was found. The strength and elastic modulus of the composites was significantly improved by lowering the Al3Ti content. When the boron content in the TiO2-B-Al system rose, the morphology of the tensile fracture surface of the composites was changed from large fractured Al3Ti blocks and fine dimples, to fine dimples and pulled-out particulates. The strengthening and fracture of the composites have been modelled.

    Notes: Abstract The dynamic fracture processes of hot-extruded SiCw-6061 Al composite were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of the off-axis angle on the strength and the fracture mechanism of the composite was studied in detail. On the basis of the SEM observations, two tensile fracture models, namely the brittle fracture model and the shear fracture model, are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Creep behaviour of 10 vol% SiC particulate-reinforced Al–C–O– composite has been investigated at the temperatures of 623 and 723 K. The addition of SiC particulates in Al–C–O alloy decreases creep rates by two to four orders of magnitude, compared with Al–C–O matrix alloy. The stress and temperature dependences of creep rates of the composite are similar to those of the Al–C–O matrix alloy. The threshold stress for creep was used to analyse the experimental data of the composite. The creep rates of the composite are concluded to be controlled by lattice diffusion of aluminium.

    Notes: The ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of a new class of polymer ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials, nylon 11/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVF2) bilaminate films, prepared by a co-melt-pressing method, is presented. The bilaminate films exhibit typical ferroelectric D-E hysteresis behavior with a remanent polarization, Pr, of about 75 mC/m2, which is higher than the value of 52 mC/m2 observed for PVF2 or nylon 11 films measured under the same conditions. The coercive field, Ec, of the bilaminate films is ∼ 78 MV/m, which is higher than that of either PVF2 or nylon 11 films. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the piezoelectric strain coefficient, d31, and the piezoelectric stress coefficient, e31, were also carried out. The bilaminate films exhibit a piezoelectric strain coefficient, d31, of 41 pC/N at room temperature, which is significantly higher than the PVF2 films (25 pC/N) and the nylon 11 films (3.1 pC/N). When the temperature is increased to 110°C, d31 of the bilaminate films reaches a maximum value of 63 pC/N, more than five times that of PVF2 (11 pC/N) and more than four times that of nylon 11 (14 pC/N) at the same temperature. The piezoelectric stress coefficient, e31, of the bilaminate films shows a value of 109 mC/m2 at room temperature, almost twice that of the PVF2 films (59 mC/m2) and about 18 times that of the nylon 11 films (6.2 mC/m2). Measurement of the temperature dependence of the hydrostatic piezoelectric coefficient, dh, of the bilaminate films also shows an enhancement with respect to the individual components, PVF2 and nylon 11. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
