Description / Table of Contents: The variety, form and volume of data available to geologists have increased significantly over the past few decades. It has become essential to use databases (either analogue or digital) to turn this avalanche of data into usable information. Geologists have built many large and complex digital databases to support their activities. However, not all these database projects have been successful. This book reviews the principle and practice of the creation, management and use of geological databases, from the point of view of geological database designers, managers and users. It is the object of this book to increase the proportion of successful geological database projects by encouraging careful thought about the processes that are involved in the design and management of a database. You don’t have to be a geologist to learn from this book…Lucidly written, with copious line drawings, data diagrams and mono screenshots from GUIs, the book covers geological data management problems by industry sector, ranging from petroleum prospecting to palaeontology…As a one-stop introduction to both data management and the use of IT in an applied science, this book cannot be bettered. Alasdair MacLeod in Computing, 8 Feb 1996 … a very worthy summary of the current state of affairs, with much on recent achievements as well as ideas for the future and the problems that need to be solved…In addition, though, there are also introductions to the principles of database design and the work may also function as an instructional textbook…This book is much more wide ranging and valuable than its title suggests.

Description / Table of Contents: Significant problems have arisen in the past with dating and correlating stratigraphical sequences impoverished in or barren of fossil remains, leaving major questions in stratigraphy for periods dominated by non-marine formations. These problems are exacerbated in dating and correlating barren sequences encountered in offshore exploration and appraisal drilling where the potential of alternative techniques becomes economically extremely important. Brought together in this volume is a wide range of diverse techniques and disciplines, broadly grouped into mineralogical, chemical, isotopic, luminescence and cyclicity analyses, to explore their potential in solving difficulties in stratigraphy. The intention is also to introduce these techniques, already familiar to specialist researchers, to a wider audience of petroleum geologist who may find them useful in resolving their specific correlation problems. The book will be of particular interest to hydrocarbon exploration and production geologists.

Description / Table of Contents: This volume contains the contributions presented at a short course held in Golden, Colorado, October 25-27, 1996 in conjunction with the Mineralogical Society of America's (MSA) Annual Meeting with the Geological Society of America in Denver, Colorado. The field of reactive transport within the Earth Sciences is a highly multidisciplinary area of research. The field encompasses a number of diverse disciplines including geochemistry, geology, physics, chemistry, hydrology, and engineering. The literature on the subject is similarly spread out as can be seen by a perusal of the bibliographies at the end of the chapters in this volume. Because these distinct disciplines have evolved largely independently of one another, their respective treatments of reactive transport in the Earth Sciences are based on different terminologies, assumptions, and levels of mathematical rigor. This volume and the short course which accompanies it, is an attempt to some extent bridge the gap between these different disciplines by bringing together authors and students from different backgrounds. A wide variety of geochemical processes including such diverse phenomena as the transport of radiogenic and toxic waste products, diagenesis, hydrothermal ore deposit formation, and metamorphism are the result of reactive transport in the subsurface. Such systems can be viewed as open bio-geochemical reactors where chemical change is driven by the interactions between migrating fluids, solid phases, and organisms. The evolution of these systems involves diverse processes including fluid flow, chemical reaction, and solute transport, each with differing characteristic time scales. This volume focuses on methods to describe the extent and consequences of reactive flow and transport in natural subsurface systems. Our ability to quantify reactive transport in natural systems has advanced dramatically over the past decade. Much of this advance is due to the exponential increase in computer computational power over the past generation-geochemical calculations that took years to perform in 1970 can be performed in seconds in 1996. Taking advantage of this increase of computational power, numerous comprehensive reactive transport models have been developed and applied to natural phenomena. These models can be used either qualitatively or qualitatively to provide insight into natural phenomena. Quantitative models force the investigator to validate or invalidate ideas by putting real numbers into an often vague hypothesis and thereby starting the thought process along a path that may result in acceptance, rejection, or modification of the original hypothesis. Used qualitatively, models provide. insight into the general features of a particular phenomenon, rather than specific details. One of the major questions facing the use of hydrogeochemical models is whether or not they can be used with confidence to predict future evolution of groundwater systems. There is much controversy concerning the validity and uncertainties of non-reactive fluid flow systems. Adding chemical interaction to these flow models only confounds the problem. Although such models may accurately integrate the governing physical and chemical equations, many uncertainties are inherent in characterizing the natural system itself. These systems are inherently heterogeneous on a variety of scales rendering it impossible to know precisely the many details of the flow system and chemical composition of the host rock. Other properties of natural systems such as permeability and mineral surface area, to name just two, may never be known with any great precision, and in fact may be unknowable. Because of these uncertainties, it remains an open question as to what extent numerical models of groundwater flow and reactive transport wilI be useful in making accurate quantitative predictions. Nevertheless, reactive transport models should be able to predict the outcome for the particular representation of the porous medium used in the model. Finally, it should be mentioned that numerical models are often our only recourse to analyze such environmental problems as safe disposal of nuclear waste where predictions must be carried out over geologic time spans. Without such models it would be impossible to analyze such systems, because they involve times too long to perform laboratory experiments. The results of model calculations may affect important political decisions that must be made. Therefore, it is all the more important that models be applied and tested in diverse environments so that confidence and understanding of the limitations and strengths of model predictions are understood before irreversible decisions are made that could adversely affect generations to come.

Description / Table of Contents: Geophysical studies were conducted during September and October of 1975 in northern Maine to locate rock types suitable for construction purposes for the proposed Dickey-Lincoln School Dam Project. Simultaneous airborne magnetometer and VLF electrical resistivity surveys were performed over an area of approximately 920 km2 surrounding the confluence of the St. John and Allagash rivers. The resulting data were used to construct contour maps of apparent resistivity and of total magnetic intensity above the earth's background magnetic field. During the same time period, ground and multi-elevation surveys were performed over a special test sector of known geology. The ground and airborne study in the test sector aided in interpretation of the data by revealing a strong correlation between igneous geology, resistivity, and magnetic intensity. Lack of a similar correlation between resistivity and magnetic data in the remainder of the survey area suggested an absence of additional areas of igneous rocks. The multi-elevation survey of the test area indicated that changes in flight altitude, necessitated by the topographic relief encountered, would not seriously affect the regional resistivity patterns. Although there was no strong evidence of igneous rocks outside the test sector, suitable rock types may exist within the Dss geologic unit (cyclically bedded gray slate and sandstone) in the central part of the main survey area, where most of the high resistivity contours occur.

Description / Table of Contents: During the winter of 1973-74 a mobile infrared thermography system was used to survey campus buildings at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire. Both qualitative and quantitative data are presented regarding heat flow through a small area of a wall of one brick dormitory building before and after installation of aluminum reflectors between radiators and the wall. These data were used to estimate annual cost savings for 22 buildings of similar construction having aluminum reflectors installed behind 1100 radiators. The data were then compared with the actual savings which were calculated from condensate meter data. The discrepancy between estimated and actual annual cost savings is explained in detail along with all assumptions required for these calculations.

Description / Table of Contents: Current protocols for decontaminating devices used to sample groundwater for organic contaminants are reviewed. Most of the methods given by regulatory agencies provide little scientific evidence that justify the recommended protocols. In addition, only a few studies that actually compared various decontamination protocols could be found in the open literature, and those studies were limited in their scope. Various approaches for decontamination and criteria that are important in determining how effectively a surface could be decontaminated are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Before vehicle mobility in snow can be reliably predicted, a complete understanding of motion resistance in snow is required. This report examines several aspects of wheeled vehicle motion resistance using results obtained with the CRREL instrumented vehicle. Resistances of leading and trailing tires are examined. Limited data are presented for undercarriage drag, and third and fourth wheel passes in the same rut are initially analyzed, as is how snow deforms around a wheel. For the CRREL instrumented vehicle, a trailing tire has a resistance coefficient of about 0.017 for snow depths less than about 22cm. For deeper snow, the disruption of the snowpack caused by a preceding wheel causes snow to fall into the rut, resulting in higher trailing tire coefficients. For larger vehicles, which in some cases have trailing tires carrying larger loads than preceding tires, the trailing tire coefficients are on the order of 0.048 and 0.025 for second and third trailing wheels respectively. Since there are no trailing tire data available for these larger vehicles, these values are based on nonlinear regression analysis, which includes a prediction of the leading tire resistance. The results and observations of this study are applied in a reanalysis of the towed resistance data obtained during the U.S. Army's Wheels vs. Tracks study. An improved algorithm is presented for predicting wheeled vehicle motion resistance caused by snow.

Description / Table of Contents: A pavement joint seal prevents the passage of liquids into the pavement base and the intrusion of solids into the joint. The primary mechanical requirements of a pavement seal are that it respond elastically or viscoelastically to any movement of the joint without failure and that it withstand indentation of hard objects like rocks. Because pavement joint movements and seal deformations can be large, elastomeric sealants are often used to form seals. Winter conditions are recognized as the most critical for a seal because of the possibility that failure stresses will be reached as the joint opens to a maximum and the material stiffens in response to the temperature reduction. This report reviews the specific problems and requirements that cold climates create for the performance of elastomeric seals. Emphasis is placed on the material response behavior that can lead to failure of a seal. In an attempt to clarity the mechanics of sealant and seal performance associated with low-temperature pavement applications and to address the issue of low-temperature stiffening That should be a dominant factor in the selection of a sealant, this report presents background information on the formulation and mechanical properties of elastomeric seal materials and the structural behavior of field-molded joint and crack seals.

Note: The field experiments were continued to estimate convective storm particulate scavenging efficiency in proximity to the St. Louis, Missouri urban-industrial complex. Complementary studies of the urban aerosol characterization, source strength, and removal processes were also studied. The 1975 field effort shifted emphasis from the immediate St. Louis area to the Alton-Wood River industrial complex. Along with the change in size and configuration of the network, there were increases in the numbers of most types of samplers. The new network yielded the following types of samples for analysis and interpretation: 1065 total rain samples from 85 sites; 68 sequential rainwater samples from 2 locations; 272 wet/dry samples from 7 locations; 216 air filter samples from 7 locations; 36 air filter samples from aircraft; and raindrop spectrometer data from 11 sites for the period 17 June-18 August. The analysis procedures require that all water samples undergo filtering for separate analyses of soluble and insoluble fractions of the elemental concentrations. This data collection effort provided a record number of samples for chemical analysis. Approximately 4000 pibals and over 370 radiosondes were released in the operational period, providing wind and thermodynamic data on 33 days. Aircraft missions were flown on 24 days, with one air tracer release of cesium on 19 July 1975. The status of the analysis of all types of data is described.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: The distribution of temperature throughout an idealized ice cap is studied. The idealized ice cap is considered as one with a constant growth rate, without internal movement, subject to a linear climatic change and to a constant geothermal influx. The problem is treated as a Stefan-type problem and the solution is obtained by the principle of superposition. The results indicate that the temperature at the base of the ice cap rises with time and eventually would reach the melting point of the ice. Under such conditions, it is concluded that the ice cap is not resting on a permafrost base as suggested by previous investigation.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: The temperature distribution in snow subjected to gamma radiation from an operating nuclear reactor is analyzed mathematically, assuming that the effect of radiation is equivalent to a continuous heat source, the intensity of which is a function of the radial distance from the reactor. Steady-state solutions are derived for two cases: when the radial distance is 13 ft and when it is 19.1 ft. The results indicate that the temperature of the snow in certain regions in the several feet immediately below the foundation will exceed the design limit of 20°F. Increasing the shielding of the reactor will reduce the intensity of the radiation and snow temperature. Other possible ways to reduce the snow temperature include the use of refrigeration coils and the forcing of the atmospheric air through the snow.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: A simple theory is proposed for crack formation and development by soil desiccation on the basis of laboratory experiments utilizing soil samples (Bloomington till) with max particle size of 1 mm diam. held in flat wooden containers. The crack pattern is more dependent on the thickness of the soil sample than on temperature or humidity. Some effect is caused also by differences in the bottom material of the containers. The area of cells made by crack patterns has a log normal size distribution. Total length of cracks decreases with increase in sample thickness. The number of sides of cells also depends on the thickness. Cracking was found to begin from the center of the soil layer and to propagate to the surface or bottom with non-uniform speed.
