Description: In the present study, the structure of the crust beneath the eastern Andean foreland is analyzed. The area comprises part of northwest Argentina, between 22° and 25° S and 66° and 62° W. In terms of morphotectonics, the area studied covers the transition between the Sierras Subandinas (Subandean Ranges) and the southern part of the Cordillera Oriental (Eastern Cordillera) to the Chaco plains (Llanura Chaqueña). In the area, a pervasive change controls the tectonic features, which is interpreted as a consequence of the interaction between the Andean orogeny and preexistent Cretaceous rifting. This inversion tectonics did not only result in a particular suite of near to surface structures but also modified deeply the mass distribution within the crust. This changes in mass distributions and hence density contrasts is evidenced by the gravity field. As such, a careful analysis of gravity data together with the geological boundary conditions are the basis for an analysis of this tectonic interaction. Understanding these structures implied to analyse not only the part of the rift involved in the Andean compressive orogenesis but also that part where original extensional features are still preserved. From a gravimetrical point of view, the Bouguer-anomaly of the area shows a strong overprint related with the Andean root. Some smaller changes in the field however indicate the existence of local sources, which where the target of the modelling. Such a change had been indentified at the southeastern edge of the Cretaceous rift. Modelling was performed towfold. As such, a 2D model was made in order to get an insight into the regional aspects of the area. A more detailed 3D model led to a more precise interpretation of the area. In particular, the effect of the inverted rift tectonics at the eastern edge of the basin was studied. These upthrusts correlate with a readily identifiable positive anomaly within the residual field. The anomaly neverthless cannot be directly related with an astenospheric uprise, preserved since the rifting stage, as suggested by some authors. In addition, the foredeep related with the tectonic load of the Andean overthurst, was modelled. The negative anomalies generated during this process, show a strong contrast in comparison with the positive anomaly described above, depicted also by a prominent gradient in the residual field. 2D modelling led to the following results. In the region, where Creataceous rifting structures were not overprinted by the Andean orogeny an obvious asymmetry of the basin was defined, being the master detachment dipping to the northeast. The orogeny left evidences of reactivation, where the structures of the southeastern edge were the pathways of the uplift if deeper crustal material with a higher density. This process may be responsible for a part of the positive anomaly mentioned. Structures located at the western and northwestern edge of the basin seem to have only involved nearer-to surface structures. The 3D model assumed a slight uprise of the lower crust beneath the basin. The asymmetry in goemetty seem to stand more for a tectonic effect than for a remanent thinned crust. As a summary, the gravity field in this area shows the combined effects of the regional Andean gradient with the more local effects of the basement tectonics (inverted rifting) and the overthrusted foredeep. Hence, at least these three factors seem to be responsible for the strong local gradient in a lateral position of the Andean root.

Description: Fluctuations in the length of day (Δlod) can be caused by temporal variations of the inertia tensor described by the excitation function and by disturbances of the torque balance between core and mantle. Recent models of the atmospheric excitation of the variations of the lod certainly failed with respect to longer periods (e.g., at about 70 years), but seem to be responsible for the annual period, the 22 years period and for a part of the nearly 30 years period. So, another geophysical phenomenon is needed which is responsible for the remaining part of unexplained lod variations. Previous studies of the geomagnetic core-mantle coupling were re-examined using lod values from which atmospherically excited parts were removed. The remaining part of the 30 years period could be explained by core-mantle coupling. Additionally, the torque blance was realized by assuming lower values of the electrical conductivity at the bottom of the mantle. It was concluded that the consideration of geophysical processes within atmosphere and hydrosphere will be important for future refinements of the core-mantle coupling models of the decade fluctuations in the lod.

Description: The amplitude spectra of global geophysical phenomena were investigated to motivate research of physical connections between them. The suggested causality was derived from comparison of the spectra, and from cross correlation functions. The following global parameters were discussed: for the earth rotation by the variations of the length of day, for the gemagnetic variation by the global field intensity, changes of the dipole axis and the westward drift, and for climate change by the atmospheric excitation function derived from air pressure variations, and temperature variations. The model of atmospheric excitation, which can be proved most exactly for the annual variation of length of day, is responsible for the 11 and 22 years periods, too. It failed for longer periods e. g., partially for the 30 years periods and completely for the 60 to 80 years periods, which were also discovered in the mean temperature and geomagnetic field variations. Therefore, it was suggested that longer periods in climate change and in the variations of the earth's rotation are caused independently by the same process in the earth core, provided that a physical influence of the geomagnetic field on climate will be accepted in future. The investigation was completed by comparison with the spectra of some local temperature variations in Europe.

Description: This technical report has been initiated, compiled and edited until March 1994. Its objective was to collect the existing geoscientific database and state of the art on the Uralides. It serves as a platform for financial and operational decisions by national and international funding agencies on the URSEIS95-project (Urals Reflection Seismic Experiment and Integrated Studies) under the EUROPROBE umbrella. The German DEKORP2000 (GFZ Potsdam), funded by BMBF, decided to operate this project in June 1994. Until November 1994, the COCORP project (Cornell University, U.S.A), funded by NSF, and CICYT (Barcelona, Spain) got funding to join a western consortium on the operation ofURSEIS in 1995. Until the end of 1994, a Russian consortium, funded by ROSGEOLCOM, was built under the leadership of SPETSGEOFISIKA (Moscow), integrating the BAZHENOV Geophysical Expedition (Sheelite, Ekaterinburg), BASHNEFTEGEOFISIKA (Ufa) and the GEON institute (Moscow). All partners in the project join forces in financing, acquisition, processing, interpretation and publishing the results of the seismic experiment. The field parameters of the experiment (chapter VI) have been slightly modified in the meantime and include the Vibroseis source technique. The field campaign is scheduled for May-September 1995. The interdisciplinary studies (chapter Vll) have been approved by the E.C. in the frame of the INTAS-programme (International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union). in October 1994 and started their operational phase.

Description / Table of Contents: The variety, form and volume of data available to geologists have increased significantly over the past few decades. It has become essential to use databases (either analogue or digital) to turn this avalanche of data into usable information. Geologists have built many large and complex digital databases to support their activities. However, not all these database projects have been successful. This book reviews the principle and practice of the creation, management and use of geological databases, from the point of view of geological database designers, managers and users. It is the object of this book to increase the proportion of successful geological database projects by encouraging careful thought about the processes that are involved in the design and management of a database. You don’t have to be a geologist to learn from this book…Lucidly written, with copious line drawings, data diagrams and mono screenshots from GUIs, the book covers geological data management problems by industry sector, ranging from petroleum prospecting to palaeontology…As a one-stop introduction to both data management and the use of IT in an applied science, this book cannot be bettered. Alasdair MacLeod in Computing, 8 Feb 1996 … a very worthy summary of the current state of affairs, with much on recent achievements as well as ideas for the future and the problems that need to be solved…In addition, though, there are also introductions to the principles of database design and the work may also function as an instructional textbook…This book is much more wide ranging and valuable than its title suggests.

Description / Table of Contents: Significant problems have arisen in the past with dating and correlating stratigraphical sequences impoverished in or barren of fossil remains, leaving major questions in stratigraphy for periods dominated by non-marine formations. These problems are exacerbated in dating and correlating barren sequences encountered in offshore exploration and appraisal drilling where the potential of alternative techniques becomes economically extremely important. Brought together in this volume is a wide range of diverse techniques and disciplines, broadly grouped into mineralogical, chemical, isotopic, luminescence and cyclicity analyses, to explore their potential in solving difficulties in stratigraphy. The intention is also to introduce these techniques, already familiar to specialist researchers, to a wider audience of petroleum geologist who may find them useful in resolving their specific correlation problems. The book will be of particular interest to hydrocarbon exploration and production geologists.

Description / Table of Contents: Current protocols for decontaminating devices used to sample groundwater for organic contaminants are reviewed. Most of the methods given by regulatory agencies provide little scientific evidence that justify the recommended protocols. In addition, only a few studies that actually compared various decontamination protocols could be found in the open literature, and those studies were limited in their scope. Various approaches for decontamination and criteria that are important in determining how effectively a surface could be decontaminated are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Before vehicle mobility in snow can be reliably predicted, a complete understanding of motion resistance in snow is required. This report examines several aspects of wheeled vehicle motion resistance using results obtained with the CRREL instrumented vehicle. Resistances of leading and trailing tires are examined. Limited data are presented for undercarriage drag, and third and fourth wheel passes in the same rut are initially analyzed, as is how snow deforms around a wheel. For the CRREL instrumented vehicle, a trailing tire has a resistance coefficient of about 0.017 for snow depths less than about 22cm. For deeper snow, the disruption of the snowpack caused by a preceding wheel causes snow to fall into the rut, resulting in higher trailing tire coefficients. For larger vehicles, which in some cases have trailing tires carrying larger loads than preceding tires, the trailing tire coefficients are on the order of 0.048 and 0.025 for second and third trailing wheels respectively. Since there are no trailing tire data available for these larger vehicles, these values are based on nonlinear regression analysis, which includes a prediction of the leading tire resistance. The results and observations of this study are applied in a reanalysis of the towed resistance data obtained during the U.S. Army's Wheels vs. Tracks study. An improved algorithm is presented for predicting wheeled vehicle motion resistance caused by snow.

Description / Table of Contents: A pavement joint seal prevents the passage of liquids into the pavement base and the intrusion of solids into the joint. The primary mechanical requirements of a pavement seal are that it respond elastically or viscoelastically to any movement of the joint without failure and that it withstand indentation of hard objects like rocks. Because pavement joint movements and seal deformations can be large, elastomeric sealants are often used to form seals. Winter conditions are recognized as the most critical for a seal because of the possibility that failure stresses will be reached as the joint opens to a maximum and the material stiffens in response to the temperature reduction. This report reviews the specific problems and requirements that cold climates create for the performance of elastomeric seals. Emphasis is placed on the material response behavior that can lead to failure of a seal. In an attempt to clarity the mechanics of sealant and seal performance associated with low-temperature pavement applications and to address the issue of low-temperature stiffening That should be a dominant factor in the selection of a sealant, this report presents background information on the formulation and mechanical properties of elastomeric seal materials and the structural behavior of field-molded joint and crack seals.

Description / Table of Contents: A lake, as a body of water, is in continuous interaction with the rocks and soils in its drainage basin, the atmosphere, and surface and groundwaters. Human industrial and agricultural activities introduce new inputs and processes into lake systems. This volume is a selection of ten contributions dealing with diverse aspects of lake systems, including such subjects as the geological controls of lake basins and their histories, mixing and circulation patterns in lakes, gaseous exchange between the water and atmosphere, and human input to lakes through atmospheric precipitation and surficial runoff. This work was written with a dual goal in mind: to serve as a textbook and to provide professionals with in-depth expositions and discussions of the more important aspects of lake systems.

Description / Table of Contents: A method of constructing low-dimensional nonlinear models capturing the main features of complex dynamical systems with many degrees of freedom is described. The system is projected onto a linear subspace spanned by only a few characteristic spatial structures called Principal Interaction Patterns (PIPs). The expansion coefficients are assumed to be governed by a nonlinear dynamical system. The optimal low-dimensional model is determined by identifying spatial modes and interaction coefficients describing their time evolution simultaneously according to a nonlinear variational principle. The algorithm is applied to a two-dimensional geophysical fluid system on the sphere. The models based on Principal Interaction Patterns are compared to models using Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOFs) as basis functions. A PIP-model using 12 patterns is capable of capturing the long-term behaviour of the complete system monitored by second-order statistics, while in the case of EOFs 17 modes are necessary.

Description / Table of Contents: Hydrothermal venting at mid-ocean ridges has become one of the fastest-growing areas of interest in the marine geosciences since their discovery at the beginning of the 1980s. Marine geologists, geochemists and biologists are beginning to unravel the processes that generate and focus these high-temperature, chemically charged fluid exhalations, and those that control the colonization and ecology of the bizarre gamut of fauna and flora resident at these sites. Researchers, on the edge of understanding how volcanic and tectonic processes interact to control fluid flow, can show how they can predict the likely occurrence of hydrothermal systems throughout the world ridge system, and how the biomass has flourished in such inhospitable settings. Indeed, the very isolation of the communities has led workers to suggest that their restricted evolutionary path has direct significance for studies of the early origins of life itself. Hydrothermal processes are four-dimensional in their character, on a range of time-scales, which are of the order of thousands of years in terms of the of the lifetime of the hydrothermal sites, down to days in terms of the dispersal of plume products in the water column. The papers in this volume represent the latest reviews and reports of the state-of-the-art understanding of an area of marine science that we are only just beginning to recognize the scope and impact of.
