Description / Table of Contents: In the book "Weather Condition and Helicopter Flights" by G. I. Mazurov and V. N. Nesteruk presented interaction between helicopters and environment, influence of meteorological factors and weather phenomena on the safety of helicopter multipurpose employment, physical nature of the influence of meteorological factors on the flights and the helicopter operation peculiarities in various geographical regions under marginal meteorological conditions are considered. The aerodynamical aspects of the interaction between the main rotor and the atmosphere are studied. Recommendations for further efficiency in the meteorological support of helicopter flight safety are put forward. It is for the first time that the problems of aviation meteorology with reference to helicopter aircraft are summarized in one issue. The book is intended for helicopter pilots, experts in aviation and synoptical meteorology, atmospheric physics, as well as aviation school cadets. It may be employed as a teaching aid for flight personnel classes. The book is useful for wide sections of readers and experts in the adventitious and purpose ful influence of the aircraft on environment and in transportation ecology.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: A consistent theory of plane plastic deformation of soil is formulated by assuming soil as an ideal material that has constant cohesion and friction angle. Such an ideal soil is an extension of the ideal metal that has, in the terminology of soil mechanics, cohesion only. After a review of the existing theories from which the present theory has emerged, the mathematical expression referred to as the "compression characteristic" is developed. Then the system of differential equations is shown by the theory of characteristic lines. Many mathematical and physical problems remain to be solved before the perfect explanation of the plasticity of ideal soil will be attained.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: Pendulum steering, a new concept of attitude stabilization for thermal probes or coring drills in ice, eliminates instability. The center of support is placed above the center of gravity. A lower and upper hot point produce melt penetration. The ratio of their power levels is the basis for stabilization, which is provided by the automatic control of the heater in the upper hot point. This feature makes possible a single thermal probe design that is suitable for all ice cap temperatures and a wide range of penetration rates (i.e., applied power levels). The simplicity of a thermal probe with pendulum steering suggests availability at modest cost and versatility as a widely applicable tool.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: A deep rotary core drilling project in 1957 at Site 2 on the Greenland ice sheet (76°59'N, 56°04'W provided ice core to a depth of 411 m. The vertical variation in bulk density, macroscopic structure, oxygen isotope ratios, ionic constituents, and extraterrestrial dust (black spherules) were analyzed using both field and laboratory techniques . These data permit the direct estimate of annual accumulation layers in the core. Continuous stratigraphic measurements and observations were made over the upper 110 m of the profile and detailed physical and chemical analyses were made on continuous lo 3 to 3.9-m core increments at 100, 200, 300 and 411-m depths. The average total ionic concentration in the ice sheet ranges between 0.65 and 1.35 mg/liter. The annual global mass deposit of black spherules as calculated from these studies varies from 2.10 x 10^5 metric tons in 700 year old ice to 6.57 x 10^5 metric tons in 12 year old firn. The oxygen isotope ratio variation provides the best means of estimating accumulation at depth. Results of the investigations indicate rates of net snow accumulation of 42.3, 34.2, 37.4, 41.1 and 41.6 g/cm^2 -yr at the surface, A.D. c. 1773, c. 1513, c. 1233 and c. 934 respectively. Accumulation data and other physical and chemical evidence allow climatological inferences to be made over the 10-century profile. The ice core record shows that snow accumulation and temperature in A. D. 934 were similar to today, followed by a gradual decrease in accumulation to a minimum around the late 18th century and an increase in both accumulation and temperature from A. D. 1773 to 1957 and following.

Description / Table of Contents: This volume examines the processes responsible for sedimentation in modern glacimarine environments, and how such modern studies can be used as analogues in the interpretation of ancient glacimarine sequences. Sediments released from glaciers grounded in tidewater, floating ice shelves, ice tongues, icebergs and sea ice form complex sequences governed by glaciological, oceanographic, sedimentary and biogenic controls. Ten per cent of the world’s oceans and epicontinental seas contain such active glacimarine environments, but during Cenozoic glacial periods this area was doubled. This book will, therefore, be of relevance to all scientists concerned with high and middle latitude marine environments. The early chapters are concerned largely with processes of sedimentation in modern glacimarine environments; examples are drawn from Alaska, the Canadian Arctic, Svalbard and Antarctica. Studies of ancient sequences, both Cenzoic and pre-Cenozoic, from the Barents Sea, Greenland, Sweden, Alaska and the northwest European continental shelf, form the latter part of the book.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: The book gives a very brief geological and petrophysical description of the studied regions, a description of physical anomalous fields, considers the relationship of anomalies with geological objects, describes a methodology for studying the deep structure of the earth's crust based on gravimetric and magnetic survey data, describes the thicknesses and topography of the surfaces of the layers of the earth's crust, the ratios of the layers with each other and with anomalies, as well as with the relief of the earth's surface. Interrelations between the features of the structure of various layers of the earth's crust and the geological structure of its near-surface zones are dialyzed. On the basis of the revealed regular relationships between the deep structure of the earth's crust, on the one hand, the types of geosynclinal structures, the mode of their development, and the features of their genesis, on the other hand, judgments are made about the composition of different layers of the crust and the question of their genesis is investigated. The hypothesis of the origin and development of the earth's crust and its constituent layers is proposed and substantiated.

Description / Table of Contents: Fracture in structural materials remains a vital consideration in engineering systems, affecting the reliability of machines throughout their lives. Impressive advances in both the theoretical understanding of fracture mechanisms and practical developments that offer possibilities of control have re-shaped the subject over the past four decades. The contributors to this volume, including some of the most prominent researchers in the field, give their long-range perspectives of the research on the fracture of solids and its achievements. The subjects covered in this volume include: statistics of brittle fracture, transition of fracture from brittle to ductile, mechanics and mechanisms of ductile separation of heterogenous solids, the crack tip environment in ductile fracture, and mechanisms and mechanics of fatigue. Materials considered range from the usual structural solids to composites. The chapters include both theoretical points of view and discussions of key experiments. Contributors include: from MIT, A.S. Argon, D.M. Parks; from Cambridge, M.F. Ashby; from U.C. Santa Barbara, A.G. Evans, R. McMeeking; from Glasgow, J. Hancock; from Harvard, J.W. Hutchinson, J.R. Description / Table of Contents: The book by M. S. Krass and V. G. Merzlikin "The Radiative Thermophysics of Snow and Ice"- the new point of view with usage of methods of light-scattering media theory is realized as working of theory of radiative thermophysics of snow and ice. The statements of new class of thermophysics problems are presented, snow and ice are supposed as light-scattering media with volume reflection and absorption. For the first time this method have helped to explain some noted effects of metamorphic evolution in upper active layer of snow-ice medium and to correct lows of their mass-energy exchange. Optical and physical models for different kinds of snow and ice were studied. The models take into account snow and ice-atmosphere interaction by means of convective heat transfer, solar flux and long-wavelength reradiation, and also phase transitions in medium and at boundaries. The model realizations of various native cases of forming heat regime within snow-ice covers are considered. For all that the way of practical use of theoretical results is shown. The range of the problems makes the book to be interesting for experts in glaciology and planetology, physicists, mathematicians, geographers, climatologists.

Description / Table of Contents: Subsurface radar was used to profile ice and snow conditions on the Ross Ice Shelf at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, during mid-January 1993. Deconvolution and migration were often used to improve vertical resolution and spatial imaging. Profiles at a pulse center frequency of 400 MHz along the 3.2-km-long Pegasus ice runway show many low-density horizons above 9 m depth that are up to 30 m long. They are associated with air bubbles included during refreezing of meltwater and are interpreted as layers between a few and tens of centimeters thick. There is a strong reflecting horizon at about 9 m depth that is probably from brine intrusion as it is continuous with the intrusion into the snow to the east. Diffraction asymptotes give a dielectric constant near 3.2 for material above the brine level, a value that implies near-solid ice. Profiles at 100 MHz along the road between Pegasus runway and Williams Field in the accumulation zone show snow features such as layer deformation and intrusive brine layers that both abruptly and gradually change in depth. A single profile at a relic solid waste dump at Williams Field detected buried debris and ice within the upper 7 m. A survey of a suspected fuel spill shows some local disturbances near the center, but no excavation was done to verify the findings. Profiles traversing the sewage sumps at Williams Field outline the extent of the sewage deposition, and give depths to contaminated snow that closely agree with observation. Despite variability in dielectric properties, single-layer migration effectively improves the resolution of subsurface conditions. Recommendations are made for future surveys.
