Description: Part of the History of Geology Group's Bicentenary celebrations included a field trip to the Isle of Wight entitled Walk with the Founding Fathers'. It followed in the footsteps of Thomas Webster as he attempted to understand the island's complex geology almost 200 years ago. The material used for the field trip - prepared by Martin Rudwick - is reprinted here. The logistics of the weekend were organized by History of Geology Group committee members, John Mather and Dick Moody, and the trip was led by Professors Martin Rudwick and Hugh Torrens.

Description: This paper summarizes debates, among European geologists in the early nineteenth century, about the possible equivalence (or non-equivalence) between the biblical account of Noah's Flood, and new and cumulative evidence for an exceptional watery catastrophe or geological deluge' in very recent Earth history. The diluvial theory' deserves to be taken seriously as an attempted explanation of some extremely puzzling physical features (many of them reinterpreted later as traces of a glacial catastrophe' or Ice Age). The geological deluge' was eventually recognized as having been far earlier in Earth history than any event recorded by literate human societies. Among geologists, although not always among the wider public, this gradual dissociation between biblical Flood and geological deluge was generally amicable, not acrimonious. It was facilitated by the concurrent development of biblical scholarship, which showed that earlier literalistic interpretations were no longer tenable (and were also destructive of religious meaning). What was transposed into geology in the course of these debates was the strong Judaeo-Christian sense that the world has had a directional and contingent history, which might have been punctuated by occasional catastrophic events.

Description: The Geological Society was the world's first formal learned society to be devoted to the earth sciences, but these sciences were already flourishing in other social forms. In Continental Europe, state-supported academies of sciences', natural history museums, mining schools and universities all supported many savants', who would now be classed as professionals. In Britain and Ireland, in contrast, mineral surveyors and managers of mines worked entirely in the private sector. Throughout Europe, however, all such professionals relied on an infrastructure of amateur' observers and collectors (often very far from amateurish'), including groups of lower social status such as miners and quarrymen, to provide local information and specimens. The leading figures regarded themselves as belonging, despite the wars, to an informal and cosmopolitan network of savants; they used the international language of French to communicate across national boundaries, and treated Paris as the centre of their intellectual world. The Geological Society modelled itself first on other informal scientific clubs and then on the botanical Linnean Society. It chose to model its periodical on the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions rather than the more utilitarian Journal des Mines edited in Paris. It considered adopting the well-established epithet mineralogical', but chose instead the rather novel and previously contentious word geological', in order to signal its intended focus on careful outdoor fieldwork rather than indoor work with specimens. At the same time it rejected the speculative ambitions of the genre of theory of the Earth' in favour of an ostentatious focus on supposedly atheoretical facts'.

Description: Jean-Andre de Luc (or Deluc) (1727-1817), who first proposed the term geology' almost in its modern sense, was one of the most prominent geologists of his time. His theory of the Earth', published in several versions between 1778 and 1809, divided geohistory in binary manner into two distinct phases. The fossiliferous strata had been formed during a prehuman ancient history' of immense but unquantifiable duration. Then the present continents had emerged above sea-level in a sudden physical revolution', at the start of the Earth's modern history' of human occupation. De Luc argued that the rates of actual causes' or observable processes (erosion, deposition, volcanic activity, etc.) provided natural chronometers' that proved that the modern' world was only a few millennia in age; and he identified the natural revolution at its start as none other than the Flood recorded in Genesis. So nature's chronology' could be constructed from natural evidence, to match the well-established historical science of chronology based on textual evidence from ancient cultures. De Luc's natural chronology was restricted to the recent past, but it provided a template for later geologists to develop a geochronology extending into the depths of geohistory. The historical importance of de Luc's work has only been obscured by the myth of intrinsic conflict between science and religion.
